Hooks are an important part of salmon fishing, as they are what help to secure the fish once it has been caught. There are a variety of different hooks that can be used, depending on the type of salmon being fished for and the preferred method of fishing.
The most common type of hook used for salmon fishing is the treble hook, which is a three-pronged hook that is attached to the fishing line. Other types of hooks that can be used include single hooks, double hooks, and jig hooks.
It only took a short period of time for the Coyote spoon to rise to the top of ocean Salmon fisheries off of Oregon, Washington and Western Canada. The spoons thin material creates a very active swimming action that Salmon can’t resist.
Sized from 3-1/2- to inches in length, sizes should be chosen to match the baitfish on which Salmon are feeding. Smaller sizes when candlefish and anchovies are most prevalent, larger in late season when herring become the food of choice.
The Coyote spoon performs Exceptionally well behind Dodgers and flashers alike.
One of the top lures of all time, been fishing with them since 1975. One of my all time favorites and go to lures as well as start with lures. Prefer the hammered chrome in 5/8, 3/4, 1oz. The hammered chrome seems to have a slight edge over the plain chrome in my estimation.
You may have to get the 1 oz on Ebay vintage listing as I don’t think you will fine it listed. Great cast, trolled or deep water jigged. Will take most fish but I use for lake trout, walleye, N. Pike.
This is a go to lure for smaller to medium size Calif Halibut and striped bass from the surf. Anglers tend to throw giant baits thinking 20 lbers and end up missing out on nice quality keepers which are feeding are smaller baits found in the surf.
They cast well and come in numerous colors to match the hatch on the bait fish. Best deal is they only cost $5. 00 in a time when some Lures can run $20. 00 or more.
We have used silver crocodiles to fish the northern Gulf of California for many years and it consistently works for bass, trigger fish, corbina, sierra, snapper and the occasional totoaba. It is just a great lure.

Landing a quality steelhead requires a reel with a good drag, fluorocarbon line (I prefer 10lb test) and a quality #6 hook that won’t bend on the fight or during the hook removal and release process.
I have used the Mustad Model 92553 Octopus hook for over fifteen years and it has provided the quality required to land the big one.

Except the barb means they are almost impossible to get out of your clothing if hooked! I always buy these at Sail, for less than 2/3 of the price of other retailers.
I bought these a couple of weeks ago and finally used some today. If my buddy hadn’t had some snap swivels on hand my fishing day would’ve been dramatically cut short. The eye of the hooks aren’t closed properly and just kept slipping off the line losing multiple fish.
It’s worse than having an Eagle Claw break off in a fishes mouth but at least part of the hook is still attached to my line. I at least got to fight the fish a bit instead of just trying to set the hook only to be giving the fish a free piercing along with a complimentary snack.

I prefer Tiemco hooks for my fly tying. I’m a little concerned that cheap Chinese hooks seem to eating into this specialized market. These hooks from Japan may be slightly more money, but they continue to be the gold standard in our sport.
Owner joins the compact treble hook trend with their new Short Shank ST-36 Treble. Short shank trebles are gaining popularity because manufacturers are able to use wider gaps without fear of tangling on multi-hooked baits.

At any point in the journey you can catch fish on a Krocodile, whether the fish are trout or bass, salmon or stripers, bluefish or calicos, halibut or tuna. It’s been that way for generations. The Krocodile operates on a simple premise: big fish eat smaller fish.
Year in and year out, the Krocodile proves itself to be the most productive spoon ever built. It can be cast and retrieved, jigged over structure, or trolled. Choose the size that best mirrors available forage, then pick the perfect finish from an extensive palette.
Versatile, multi-species minnow design. Heavy-duty construction. Corrosion-resistant finishes. Sizes 016 through 058 are rigged with split rings, swivels & Red Magic flipper tails. Sizes 034 & 100 are rigged with welded rings.
We own many brands of lures. Most are very good. A few are excellent. Krocodile is one of the excellent. We primarily fish the Eastern Sierra. Krocodile lures will catch fish weather trolling or casting.
Last fall I fished Panguitch Lake in Southern Utah. I got a late start, somewhere around 10:00 am. I was told that the bite was slow. I did not see many bent rods. I dropped anchor and cast a Krocodile.
First cast, fish on! I have no idea how many cutthroats I caught and released. Other fishermen weren’t as busy as was I with my Krocodiles. Krocodiles were the only lures I used on that trip; they were the only lures I had to use! Krocodiles will catch fish.
I purchased my FIRST Krocodile as a “backup” for BASS fishing. I primarily fish for Trout. Out of desparation one day, I tried it on Trout, and now it’s my FAVORITE TROUT LURE !!!! In fact, one day I caught 17 trout “non-stop” while others around the pond were catching Nothing, and they gathered-around in ENVY.
I’m sure I’ll never have a day like THAT again, but I’d assume that a few folks bought some Krocodile spoons after they witnessed that action! ALSO, the lure works well for Snapper-Blues and small Striped Bass when Salt-Water fishing.
The only hook using Surgically Sharpened Technology (SST) creating a precision ground, triple sided point that penetrates twice as easily over other point shapes. Made from Ultra Clean, Cold-Forged, High Carbon Steel for higher tensile strength.
The Low Profile Barb was designed for easier penetration, yet ultimate holding power. The angle of the barb was determined through precise geometric calculations.
I use these after I modify them by adding a grip pin for plastics (with epoxy). It works exactly for my needs on how I rig my baits. Love the strength and the Trokar sharpness. Can catch 30 bass no problem on one hook.
My hook up ratio went up big time with these hooks. They handle 30 – 40″ bass easily. I dropped one star because I have to modify them myself. update. this next season. I’m gonna try just using Trokar Heavy Flippin hooks, i’ll see if they hold up the same.
When I bought this press a few years ago, I had planned on using it as my primary press for loading both hand gun and rifle ammo. I now use it only for hand gun ammo since I had difficulty loading rifle cartridges consistently.
While super convenient, the interchangeable die holders have loose enough tolerance that accurate bullet seating is not possible. This is acceptable with pistol bullets, not so much with rifle ammo. I would have rated this press higher if the auto advance feature actually functioned.
The cheap plastic, poorly designed advance mechanism failed soon after I started using this press. I ordered replacement pieces hoping that maybe they would be better. Not. They soon failed also, so I have had to resort to advancing my turrets by hand.
The lever prime system works quite well, but again, the poorly designed, cheap primer feed system ended up in the trash and I now have to hand feed all my primers. I am never in a big hurry when I reload, so I can live with this press’s shortcomings; If I needed to load high volumes of ammo I would certainly look elsewhere.
Gamakatsu Skip Gap Hook Black 6ct #4/0The new Skip Gap Hook from Gamakatsu is the hook every dock skippin? Bass angler has been waiting for. Many soft plastics will slide off of the offset or simply come off when thrown hard against the water in an attempt to skip it under a dock.
This is especially true on really hot days when the plastic can get extra soft. This unique patent pending hook is designed to hold soft plastics firmly in place so that no matter how hard you throw it, the plastic bait stays put.
Unlike other hooks that have attempted to do the same thing, there is no special rigging required for this hook. Simply Texas rig it like any other wide gap style hook and its ready to go. The wide gap is built to handle thicker baits like tubes, but is also ideal for stick type baits and regular soft plastic worms.
Eagle Claw, the brand that started it all, remains the staple of today’s value conscious fisherman. Eagle Claw hooks are the only hooks Made in the USA and are built with integrity, honesty and 85+ years of hook making experience and heritage.

Finesse Wide Gap Hook is the perfect hook for wacking rigging for bass, also great for free drifting for salmon and steelhead with small baits. The Weedless version features an innovative nylon weed guard, allowing you to pitch your wacky rig into the heaviest cover.
I replace all my trout lure and spoon treble hooks with Gamakatsu open eye siwash #4 or #6 hooks. Hate doing so much damage (caused by treble hooks) to trout (and others) that I intend to release. I even crimp the barb and siwash hooks are wonderful for quick release.
I have used these for years to replace the trebles on my trout spinners, spoons and plugs because I release most of those I catch. These are very sharp and durable. Although I have had a couple corrode some, overall they seem to be of excellent quality and I really like the smaller barb on these compared to other manufacturer’s hooks of the same type.
A good rule of thumb is to use the lightest possible tackle that will get the job done. In most cases, this will be six-pound-test line on a spinning reel. Heavier tackle is usually unnecessary, and it can actually make the fishing less enjoyable.
The key to success when fishing for salmon is to use the right kind of bait. The most popular baits are herring and anchovies, but other effective options include squid, shrimp, and even chicken liver.
It can be helpful to experiment with different baits until you find one that the fish seem to be biting on.
When it comes to hooks, the most important thing is to make sure that they are sharp. Salmon have tough mouths, so a dull hook is not likely to penetrate. Hooks that are too small are also likely to be ineffective.
A good rule of thumb is to use a hook that is about the same size as the bait you are using.
In general, the best time to fish for salmon is in the early morning or late evening. The fish are most active during these times, so you are more likely to have success. Of course, you can also fish during the daytime if you find a good spot where the fish are biting.
When you are finished fishing for the day, it is important to clean your gear. This will help to prevent the spread of disease and will also keep your gear in good condition. Be sure to remove all of the hooks from your line and to wash your hands thoroughly.
