20 Best Hook For Speckled Trout (2023 Updated)

I use the Owner Mutu Light #1 circle hooks on my Pompano Rigs and they work great. I have never had one break or straighten out even when bringing in large Black Drum and Stingrays (drag set accordingly).

These Owner Mutu Light hooks also are extremely sharp out of the package and they stay sharp for multiple trips even after catching dozens of fish. When I switched to these hooks I started landing more fish.

I am not sure if it is the shape or how sharp the hooks are but I definitely noticed an improvement. I highly recommend these hooks for saltwater fishing.

Sharp and reliable. The extra long bend makes it easier to expose the point when bridle baiting whole squid. I’ve pulled in a 30lb ray on one of these, so I don’t have any worries about the “light” wire.

Since I mostly fish catch and release, I also like the fact that the barbs hold well while also being easy to crack off with pliers. If it doesn’t back out easily, just turn it into a barbless hook with a quick squeeze.

Continue fishing or tie on a new one as you like.

These hooks are great for inshore fishing for bottom grabbers such as rockfish, sand and calico bass when the fish are finicky. Seems to me the red color disappears down in the depths making a more stealthy offering.

Being a light wire hook they are also strong. Have also used the mutu light hooks for flyline live bait fishing with great results especially when bait is weak, allowing your bait a better presentation.

I’ve been to Alaska fishing several times and I can say without any reservation that the #5 Mepps Aglia with the silver blade and two tone red/yellow body is THE BEST salmon catcher in my tackle box.

Last trip to Alaska I caught every one of my fish on that lure. I rarely see it in anyone’s top 10 when talking about salmon spinners but it should be. That big #5 french blade just chops the water hard and drive salmon crazy! If you’re planning a trip for salmon this summer or fall put 10 of these in your box and I guarantee you won’t regret it.

I’ve been using Mepp’s spinners for decades as the lure of choice fishing for trout in the many canyon rivers in northern Utah, and they are still the best I have found. Construction quality is always precision and dependable with Mepp’s, though I find I the rocky bottoms and heavy vegetation in and around the shallower Utah canyon rivers are quite rough on them and challenge their life span.

Warped spoons and stripped color flutes from the hooks are usually the first casualty that ends the life of the lures that survive the snags, so I usually only get about 3-4 useful outings from each.

I really punish them, so I think that’s reasonable for such a precision device (though I would like to see them hold up a bit longer). Overall, an effective and highly recommended lure based on decades of experience!.

I replaced the treble hooks on my spinners and spoons with the Gamakatsu Siwash hooks so I could more easily release the fish I catch. It seems on every trip there would be 3 or 4 fish damaged so that I had to keep them.

With the Siwash hooks in place I damage far fewer fish per trip and my catch-to-strike ration is better. Doesn’t seem to matter if spoon or spinner, the catch rate is up! I recommend this to anyone who prefers catch and release!.

These hooks use narrower gauge wire than others, and they come sharp and stay sharper longer than any others I have used (i. e. eagle claw and Owner). I’ve use the same hooks on a bottom rig for 3 full days of surf fishing and they still caught fish.

Only drawback is the eyes on the smaller sized hooks will only hold one strand 12lb. test (okay, I could use lighted line), so snelling them is a challenge.

I’ve tried just about every jig head made from the less expensive ones in Walmart to the more expensive ones at Dick’s, Bass Pro, and the largest tackle shop on the Outer Banks. Nothing compares with the Eye-Strike/Z-Man Trout Eye for catching speckled trout, flounder, puppy drum, etc.

I’ve gotten rid of all those jig heads where I had to clean the paint out of the eyes and now use only the Trout Eye. They have the sharpest and most durable hooks by far! Get a pack or three and you too will be a convert.

Also, join the “Release Over 20” speckled trout club! The statistics on these larger fish are eye-opening and need to be released if our kids and grandkids are going to be able to enjoy fishing!!.

Warning: The bait keeper is sharp and will chew up softer baits. If you don’t hook it right the first time, you’ll need to bite your bait or grab another one. It will hold on tight, but if a fish knocks your bait down the hook, the same thing applies.

However, if you’re using ElaZtech baits, you’ll be glad you have them. Superglue will work, but I like to use another hook and pull a loop of the ElaZtech material over the hook eye to keep it in place.

(YouTube search “7 ElaZtech Hacks” and you’ll find a tutorial by ZMan. ) With all that said, I really like the Trout Eye 3/16 ounce jighead. It is very balanced allowing for different retrieving techniques.

I like to use an improved clinch knot as well as a nonslip loop knot with this jighead. I like to use it with 3-4″ DieZel Minnows, Rage Swimmers, and even Keitech Easy Shiners (These are soft and don’t hold up as well, but I love their action!).

The hook shank is right at 1″ so if you are using a larger/longer bait, I’d go with the Redfish Eye jigheads. Their hook keepers aren’t as sharp but still get the job done.

Awsome jighead for fresh and saltwater! I have paired the 1/10 oz. Jigheads with the zman 3 inch shadz in the dark stormy color. When I rigged it, the barb lined up between the top fin slot so snugly that I thought- its weedless as all getout,but no way can I get a good hook set.

Well 3 hits and 3 bass later, I was a believer! The zman shadz are buoyant enough that they have a slower fall when you stop the retrieve.

This is the first firearm I’ve purchased online from Sportsman’s Guide. The price for the pistol and the 4-Buy program from Sportsman’s Guide sealed the deal for me. The pistol shoots incredibly well.

The trigger is very responsive, and has a great wall and break at vertical. The reset on the trigger is also very distinctive. The Romeo1-PRO sight is also great. The Motion Activated (MOTAC) works really well.

Now that it’s becoming difficult for my eyes to focus on the front sight, the Red Dot is a very welcome addition. Dry firing this pistol is a little strange as the strike is somewhat muffled. However, when firing the pistol responds very well.

My son was firing it single handed off-hand and was still putting tight groups (3 inches) at 15 yards. Firing at 7 yards the groups are even tighter (2 inches). At 25 yards the groups are still within 6 inches.

I’m very pleased with this purchase and with Sportsman’s Guide My only disappointment is that the original specs shown on the site had the Romeo1-PRO as a 3 or 6 MOA red dot. When I purchased that was the writeup on the site.

Unfortunately that is incorrect. The Romeo1-PRO can indeed be purchased as either a 3 or 6 MOA sight, but the Romeo1-PRO included with this pistol is specifically the 6 MOA sight. That is why this review is only 4 stars.

The pistol is 5 stars. The writeup on the site has since then been corrected. I’m still very pleased with my purchase and would recommend this pistol, even for concealed carry.

First. yes they are more expensive than others. Now that’s out of the way,let’s look at em,shall we? These are amazing hooks. period. The quality of material. the uniformity from one hook to another.

to precision sharp points. all top both stuff. Eyelets are perfect and again. consistent. No irregularities anywhere I’ve seen. I bought these for bowfin, due to the armor plated mouth,you need a SHARP hook,and these deliver!!! Will also use on buffalo and carp.

Can u find less expensive hooks. yes? But your looking at these because u want something that will level up your fishing game. and these are it.

I have owned this gun now for a couple of weeks and have put over 600 rounds thru it with Zero problems!! Even with terrible range ammo if performed flawlessly!! This amazing gun is just awesome! I had zero experience with a red dot but the Romeo1 Pro is perfect for me.

I shoot with both eyes open because I am right handed but can not close my right eye so I use my left eye and although I was not missing my target with iron sights I just wasn’t hitting where I was wanting to.

But this Romeo1 Pro red dot has absolutely made me a better shooter no questions asked. When I do what I’m suppose to do with all my mechanics I hit exactly where I am aiming. The flat trigger is great.

Very lil play in it and just easy trigger pull in my opinion. Even the iron sights are awesome. Got the xfive 21 round mag in it and it just added that much more aggressiveness to it. Put a Olight mini 2 on it and now it’s just nasty mean looking!!!!!! This will be my every day carry and its is worth every penny!!.

I prefer Tiemco hooks for my fly tying. I’m a little concerned that cheap Chinese hooks seem to eating into this specialized market. These hooks from Japan may be slightly more money, but they continue to be the gold standard in our sport.

I use TMC hooks almost exclusively. Buy then from MRFC in 100 packs which they are one of the few shops that maintain a good stock and ship very fast. Great folks to do business with and are always helpful.

I’m a fan of Tiemco hooks. They have the styles that I need for tying. The points are sharp. The shafts of the nymph hooks are strong and not easy to bend.

I’ve used the 2/0, 3/0 and 4/0 Gamakatsu worm hooks because they work when bass become wary of baits that are fished faster. In a Naples, Florida compound during this past winter, I used these hooks with a strip of 50 lb test mono poked through the eye of the hook and through the worm – with no other weights due extremely dense weeds.

Everyone not using this tecknique wa s hung up on weeds; while my hooked worms skittered through the weeds and fished really, really slowly. My reward was 20+ large mouth bass days, and some days 8-10 bass between 4-8 pounds.

Use 2/0 & 3/0 for small mouth and smaller bass, while the 4/0 is great for large – large mouth as in Everglades Fishing!.

I’ve been using these hooks on texas rigs for the past couple of weeks and have had great success. Very few missed fish, and once they’re on, they stay on. My only complaint would be that I have had them bend out a little bit.

This could be due to the use of a 20lb braid, but I still would hope that they would not bend just from having a fish on. It is not like my drag is all the way up.

The super line series of hooks have become my favorite for regular use, i have found it especially useful for flipping a Texas rigged bait, like a berkley pit boss. The hook fits most common plastics well in the 3/0 & 4/0 size.

I like the 3/0 the best for a pit boss and beaver style baits. Cant go wrong with gamakatsu period.

Good value when purchased on sale. It’s fun to shoot and accurate too. I have already ordered and received the optional. 22 magnum cylinder for it. Now, if we could just get ammo back in stock and at a reasonable price, I’d be a happy camper.

These are my current favorite for rigging a weighted weedless soft plastic. I’ve been fishing heavy rock and oyster beds and these work better than jig heads for not getting snagged. The weight is shaped in a more streamlined manner than some other brands and this helps when dragging baits on the bottom.

Also very high quality hook, strong and sharp.

I love the Gamakatsu hooks. They’re 5 stars (although they seem smaller than their size – if you’re tying big patterns – order bigger than you thought hooks. I removed one star because I used what was leftover on a gift card to get one pack of hooks.

It came in a box that could fit a toaster. Seriously, Bass Pro? These would fit in a legal envelope with room to spare, and you choose an 8x12x6 box?.

This is a go to lure for smaller to medium size Calif Halibut and striped bass from the surf. Anglers tend to throw giant baits thinking 20 lbers and end up missing out on nice quality keepers which are feeding are smaller baits found in the surf.

They cast well and come in numerous colors to match the hatch on the bait fish. Best deal is they only cost $5. 00 in a time when some Lures can run $20. 00 or more.

This was the first AR-15 style rifle I purchased. Like a beginner’s guitar, I wanted something to play on while learning and researching. Do not max out your credit card on a Les Paul before you know a few chords.

I wanted a reasonably priced rifle from a manufacturer with a strong reputation. Sturm Ruger checked those boxes. Good news first. I think this is a fairly high quality rifle all around (despite the bad news below).

Fit and finish are well done. Magpul style (but actually Ruger) pop-up rear sight is included, as well as 30-round (for states that embrace the US constitution) PMAG magazine. Everything is MIL-SPEC.

That is a plus because you can customize as you like. The buttstock is OK. It does not have a rubber pad, which would be nice. Everything else is fine: grip, handguard, charging handle, bolt carrier group.

Trigger is also just OK, but that is expected. Ruger does sell an upgraded trigger, as do many other manufacturers. Customization is one of the great features of the AR platform and this rifle is no exception.

Bad news. I think I received a lemon. My rifle just came back from its second Mayodan, NC vacation. Severe issues with the charging handle and bolt carrier group. On its most recent outing, out of 13 rounds of high quality ammunition there were two soft strikes.

That’s not good. A warning of things to come? Yes, it turns out. This was followed by a complete breakdown rendering the rifle unusable. And teaching me the valuable lesson of bringing spare parts. Upon firing, the buffer tube retaining pin and its spring somehow broke and lodged themselves inside the trigger assembly.

End of range trip. Perhaps the unbridled demand for firearms has led to some fast and loose rules with quality assurance. At any rate, customer service has been top notch. It has been inconvenient, and certainly would not be acceptable for a 2X cost rifle, but I am hanging in there.

I replaced the stock, grip, and handguard with Magpul gray parts. Much more comfortable.
