20 Best Home Scanner For Photos (2023 Updated)

This photo scanner has worked great to archive old project photos. It’s very fast with no issues scanning 100 at a time before saving. If you are looking for great quality, it’s not the one. No difference between quality at 300 vs 600.

Only difference; file size gets a little bigger. The photo correcting software is pretty useless too. But if you are using for archival purposes it’s a great little printer.

In late spring of 2021 my existing flatbed scanner of another brand died on me as I was approaching the end of a multi-year project of digitizing thousands (30-50k) of family photos from my parents estate.

The direct replacement for what I had (originally same price as the V39) had tripled in price over the prior 3 years. I finally decided it had to be replaced anyway. The V39 seemed to be the most affordable option with high resolution capabilities.

After downloading the necessary software & drivers the V39 appeared to do decent work. Color accuracy seems pretty good. Scan speed is reasonably fast. The physical unit does fairly well. My primary issue and the reason for the so-so rating is that Epson software.

It doesn’t allow for the level of flexibility I had become used to with my previous scanner. There seems to be very limited options for setting scan area, resolutions etc. It doesn’t always retain last used settings.

The auto scan function seems to clip edges off of anything that is not a rectangular photo print and even clips edges of those photos as well. It will scan multiple photo prints at once and create separate image files.

That feature seems to work well. If I could use the software from the other brand with this unit I would give it a 5-star review. As it is, I may just have to spend the extra to go back to what I had before.

Recently purchased a new Dell PC with Windows 11 so finally, goodbye to my old (& I mean old) Canon scanner because Windows 11 simply would not support it and Canon never did an update (built-in obsolescence ).

So, I purchased this new Epson scanner. It works GREAT but here is the rub. With Windows 11, at first, it appeared it simply would not work and I was going to return it the BB. But, I decided to call Epson Support and here is the fix or work-around.

They are having some combability problems with Win11 so what you have to do is to boot up your Win11 PC, plug in this Epson Scanner, then (drum roll) reboot your PC. Yes, this is not a typo. Reboot you PC and then, and only then, does the PC and the Epson software you have to download btw, recognize the scanner.

The service people said they will soon have a permanent fix which will enable Win11 to immediately recognize the scanner and software without the reboot but until then, you must do the reboot. I, personally, can live with that and I love this scanner.

You will too. Oh, if you have any other operating system other than Win11, you should not have to do the workaround. Did I mention that I LOVE this scanner?.

Scanner came with big chunk of dust under glass that could not be cleaned off. Had a hard time connecting to the PC for power. Tried three different USB ports and finally one worked. When connected, had to restart software periodically after it stopped working and had to reboot PC a few times when power stopped via the micro USB cable.

Could not select highest 4800 dpi setting due to errors. Highest setting that would work was 1200 dpi, which was good enough for small photos but not for larger ones. Especially with the dust showing up on every picture.

Was able to scan more than one picture at a time, but no more than 3 due to having to space them apart enough for software to recognize individual ones. Auto rotate did not work well and had to rotate most by hand.

Some software GUIs were unreadable since it did not scroll or allow for resizing of box to perform selections. Returning to store.

I replaced an ancient HP flatbed photo scanner with the Epson Perfection V600 photo scanner, primarily for genealogy research and photo copying. This scanner is also excellent, better is some ways and worse in one or two, and overall I am quite pleased with it.

It has a couple of quirks that I can live with, especially as the price is not ruinous for an amateur like me. I love that it can scan color and b&w transparencies and slides, up to medium-format film, and that the process is pretty easy.

(I have found ways to scan larger negatives as long as I am willing to crop the sides significantly. ) The included pdf user’s manual gives surprisingly good instructions. I also like that included software does a decent imitation of Adobe PhotoShop Elements – it’s not quite as capable, but generally it’s good enough for my purposes.

I just wish it had a spot remover in addition to general de-noise, and the scratch remover seems to be an automated whole-image function rather than something that lets me select a specific line or area.

Scratch remover also isn’t available on all my scans, despite using identical scan settings, for unknown reasons probably having to do with image size. De-noise works really well for some images and blurs others a little too much – mostly it works well.

Color transparency scans are excellent in detail and color accuracy. Color print scans generally are corrected quite well with one-touch color correction to fix color fading/shift on old prints. B&w transparency scans have good detail but do not have the deep blacks and bright contrasts of original prints from these negatives – the images look fine until you compare them to the originals, so they’re not bad, just lacking punch.

I have to use the software to darken the image significantly to get strong blacks and then increase the contrast by roughly the same amount to restore the whites. Also, the default b&w negative scan setting includes compensation for backlighting, which lightens the image even more, so I turn that off.

I started out using the automated scan function, but it does not scan the top and side 1/4″ of the image, so you can’t line up the photo along the edge of the glass. It also gets confused by photo mounting/framing or other attached components.

Switching to manual Home scanning mode fixed these problems – the user defines the scan area, which CAN go to the edge of the glass. The default scan setting, at least for Home, is for multiple Thumbnail images instead of Normal.

I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out why my photos were being chopped up into multiple images until I read more of the (long) manual and realized I simply needed to click the Normal tab to define a single image.

One quirk for which I have not found a solution is that old sepia/browntone photos often come out with browns that are too dense and sometimes with red and gold tones (disconcerting around eyes/faces), especially when some of the editing corrections are used.

These images look very good if scanned in grayscale, but sometimes I want to keep the brown/beige tones for historical feel. As brownish photos must be scanned in color mode, sometimes discolorations also throw image appearance off, in many of my cases giving a pinkish cast to some areas.

Overall this is a very good scanner. Set-up was easy, and instructions are good. It needs almost no warm-up and can be turned off when not in use, and with LED lighting energy consumption is low. Scans are much faster than with my old HP – fast enough for me, although I’m used to slow scanners.

My attitude is that photo scans need a little more time to pull out the details, so I don’t expect the super speed of an office-grade copier. I recommend this scanner for purposes like mine (don’t know how it would work for a professional photographer, even though there is a Professional scan mode), and I would buy it again.

I’m giving it 4 stars overall for the brown/sepia quirk and the lack of contrast in b&w negative scans, even though I’m giving it 5 stars in the areas of overall quality, value, and ease of use.

I wanted to convert 2,000 35mm slides taken with a SLR camera to digital and needed a scanner to accomplish that. The slides have been stored in Kodak Carousel slide trays, with the trays placed inside their box, so the they are dust free.

I didn’t want to spend a lot on a scanner since I would only need it for this task and have 2 other scanners for everything else (documents) I scan. After reading many reviews, most expressing having poor results, I decided to contact B&H Photo for their expert advise.

After several exchanges of emails with B&H sales support they recommended a Plustek 8100, Plustek 8200 and Epson V600 Photo scanner. Their last email said the V600 would be the most versatile and the Plustek the most expensive.

They said the V600 should produce the results I wanted. Based on their recommendation I ordered the V600. After getting the V600 setup I tested it by scanning a 10×13 printed photo using the default scanner settings and the results were excellent.

Then I scanned 4 slides, at the default settings. The scan time was very fast, like the photo, but the image quality was so poor the TIFF images was unusable. I started changing the various settings, image type, resolution, scanning quality, etc, and found the mage type had to be set at 48-bit color and the resolution had to be increased from the default of 400 dpi.

After several scans at different resolutions I found that 4800 dpi provided the best compromise between image quality, image size and time required to scan. With the resolution set to 6400 dpi it took about 6 minutes to scan 4 slides and the file size was over 260 MB for each image.

At 4800 dpi it took 4 minutes and the files were 150 MB in size. At 3200 dpi it took 3 minutes with the file size 67MB. After importing the images into Lightroom Classic, it requires a lots of adjustments to remove the blurriness/graininess and adjust the colors.

I estimate only 20% of the scanned images will be worth keeping. The holder used to position up to 4 slides on the scanners glass is poorly designed. It utilizes one small plastic detent on one side to orientate and hold it in position, but every time slides are removed and/or inserted into the holder it moves out of position.

Epson no longer provides their “professional” software Digital Ice that is needed to properly scan slides, yet all of their instructions still refer to it. Because they are not updated the instructions it is impossible to get help to see why the quality is so poor and if there is any changes that would improve it.

They now offer a third party software, Silver Fast, which I found to be very confusing to use and useless in improving a scan. Overall I am very disappointed with the V600 and B&H’s advise. I should have bought the Plustek 8200 scanner.

After getting such poor results initially I should have given up on the Epson and sent it back to B&H for credit. Interestingly, searching B&H’s website for a 35mm slide scanner, the Epson V600 does not show up, so I feel the information provided by B&H was not accurate.

I have an old Canon MG7720 All-in-One printer/scanner that I used to scan old photos and the quality is better than the V600, plus it cost a lot less. Bottom line, I do not recommend buying this scanner for 35mm slides.

Save your money and buy an all-in-one or a better quality 35mm slide scanner.

Although a slightly older model, this scanner performs equally as well as the Epson Perfection V600. Downloading the utilities from Epson Support, they installed without flaw. Scanning modes provided function from full-auto to professional, full-manual for scanning, cropping, sharpening, color restoration, and dust/scratch removal.

Although, some of these features did not provide the quality of image restoration as I was looking through all of the function modes, I did not have a problem creating a quality image file in professional, full-manual mode.

Overall, I used this scanner in professional full-manual mode with relative ease, with the exception of having to individually toggle “off,” then “on,” each photo enhancement attribute to apply them to the photo in the preview window (the check-boxes should have indicated which enhancement attributes were going to be applied when it was preview-scanned).

I like the way it will preview scan 2 strips of 35mm film in one go & pick out the individual shots & allow you to adjust the rotation etc before scanning the ones you select. I also like the facility to scan the older 6 x 9cm negatives.

There is also a wide choice of scanning resolution so you can choose the best you can get with your negatives, although it takes a lot longer to scan with high resolution. I don’t like that it doesn’t come with an instruction manual so you have to go to the website to see the manual.

It took me a while to get the hang of using it as a result. I also find it a bit temperamental. While scanning the 6 x 9 negatives it would sometimes split them into two & I would have to switch the scanner off & on & close & open the software to get it to do it properly again and once while scanning 35mm it lost contact with the scanner & it took several attempts at giggling the cables & switching on & off before it would connect again.

I am writing this review for anyone who, like me, needs to scan non-standard size slides. In my case in 2″x2″ mounts, but larger than 35mm (I think the film size was 828 from memory, but anyway it was about 38mm wide).

I earlier bought a dedicated slide scanner, which was quick but cropped my slides quite badly and the quality was not good – too contrasty and harsh colours. I contacted Canon about their Canoscan 9000F and they said I would have to take the slides out of the mounts, though I’m not sure if they understood the question correctly.

Anyway I played safe and bougght the Epson V500 instead and am very glad I did. I switched off thumbnails as I read somewhere that this was advisable, and selected Professional mode on the Epson software.

This enables me to set a mask (they call it a marquee) on each slide for the area I want. I overscan and then crop to size later. This way you can even ignore the instruction to scan all slides in landscape configuration.

The other big bonus is the picture quality. I’m not an expert but even I can tell it is far superior to the previous scanner, with much better rendering of detail and more natural looking colours. The only reason I don’t give it 5 stars is because it is very slow in high resolution – I found 2400dpi was about right for slides.

But if you have non-standard size slides – or just want to make sure you get to the very edge of 35mm slides – this scanner is ideal.

Great quality scans and fast processing! Digitizing family photos can be a daunting task and this scanner makes the process so much easier than scanning one photo at a time on a flatbed scanner. My wife and I scanned an entire photo album yesterday and it only took about a half hour to scan over 200 images.

Most of the effort is spent removing the photos from the album and re-inserting them afterwards. Scanning is the easy and fun part of the process. The really fun part is seeing your small photos come to life on a big PC monitor screen.

It would be a simple step to later organize photos into slide shows if so desired for a simple presentation. We scanned at 1200 dpi with auto-correct turned on. The software offers the ability to scan and keep the original photo, then generate a separate photo with the auto-correct applied.

However, in almost every case we preferred the corrected version and turned that feature off. Another great feature is the scanner’s ability to scan the back of the photo whenever writing appears. This speeds up filing the scanned photos if you are organizing later by date.

Once the photos are organized, you can then just delete the backside image unless of course the handwriting is sentimental, and you want to save that as a photo memory as well. The scanner does not remove dust specks or scratches which would be nice feature to have, but the quality of the scans is good enough that in most cases further editing is unnecessary.

Another great feature is the wireless connectivity, so you can place the scanner on a large table or work area and have access to the scanner as part of your “assembly line” workflow. Lastly, this can be used as a document scanner with some additional software from Epson.

That’s probably something we will check into after all of our boxes and albums are scanned.

I’ve had it for a day but I love this scanner already. Having a lifetime of photos to scan, I was looking for a photo scanner with a document feeder. At the intermediate setting, the file size is about 4Mb, and takes about 3 seconds per photo, and this afternoon I did about 100 photos in less than 10 minutes.

The Setup allows you to generate an exact copy of the original and/or an enhanced copy. I started with both but eventually changed the setting to automatically accept the enhancements as the images are much sharper and brighter than the original photo.

The image generated does not need cropping or editing, and the clarity is amazing. With a bundle of photos in the feeder, it jammed a few times but this was because of turned edges on the photos or uneven original photo sizes.

Feeding them one at a time resolves this, but even in this mode, having to click ‘continue’ for each photo is still way faster than using a flatbed. I’ve used the Epson GT1500 document scanner (at about $500) for years and it was time to replace it but for an extra $200, this one does everything the GT1500 does so the photo scanning is almost a bonus.

All the reviews I read were correct and I can’t recommend this machine highly enough.

I bought the Epson Perfection V850 in 2014 almost exclusively for scanning medium format negatives, but also as a scanner for general use. Overall, it has performed very well. I use it with the supplied Epson software for general use, and find that entirely adequate, but limitations with the bundled SilverFast software led me to use VueScan for negative scanning and the combination of both works well.

The quality of reproduction is good, not up to drum scan standard, but completely satisfactory for most uses. I have not tried the wet scan method that is likely to enhance the scanning performance of the V850.

I do not as a rule use any of the noise and dirt reduction systems available with this scanner’s supplied software as I find they are too broad in effect, preferring to scan as clean a negative as possible with minimal processing and do spot repair of specks, scratches and dust with Photoshop.

The equipment is reliable as shown by several years of use, constructed to good consumer standards. Like some others have noted, I do find the negative holders for 120 film to be poorly designed with some difficultly loading and aligning 120 strips, although once properly seated the scanning process works well.

The plastic film holders do attract dust and require a clean with a lens wipe or a good blowing between uses to keep the dirt to a minimum, but are fine with those provisos. Apart from the seating issues with 120 negative film (not present for other film sizes), I find the negative and slide holders to be easy to use and all are well adapted to the scanner.

They are of adequate construction, all plastic. Paper and printed photograph scans also work well. Black and white and color reproduction is good if you pay attention to the scanning software settings and choose the best for the type of film you are using.

You will need to spend some time to master the best settings for this scanner, although immediate use results are probably good enough for most people. Resolution is good too, with lots of options for bit depth and hence resulting file size.

I’ve not tried other scanners in the Perfection series so I cannot compare, but I do use a dedicated Plustek 35mm negative scanner for that type of film. The V850 simply cannot match the quality of the Plustek, although it is far faster to operate and can scan multiple sets of 35mm negatives at once, a point in its favor.

Overall, a very useful piece of equipment to those of us photographing with film.

Got this mostly to high-res scan very old 35mm slides and various negs. which works better than expected in transparency mode. The downloadable drivers integrate with Corel PhotoPaint v 5 so also good for scanning docs to pdfs in Windows 7.

Should work in Win 11 OK using an Oracle VM. The user interface has multiple modes and a steep learning curve to unravel while the unit itself is bulky.

Color is good and images are plenty sharp. Scanning time is relatively fast. But, when I need it to scan 120MM negatives, it’s worthless. It insists on chopping each image scanned into 2 parts. I’m speaking of the resulting image, not the actual negative.

I stopped wasting time trying to get to function properly and went out and bought a slide and film scanner that will handle 120 size film.

I already had a 4490 scanner that was several years old when something in the light bar track system went on the fritz and it wouldn’t function. I checked out an authorized repair shop and it looked like the repair would have started at @$95.

For that amount, I checked online and was able to pick up this unit for only a little more. It’s in better shape than my old one and the interior scanner bed glass is cleaner, giving me a better, more consistent scan.

Delivery was sooner than expected, everything was there in the box and in good shape. I already had power and connectors in place, so I just had to hook it up and try it out. It performs well and I’m happy with the purchase.

The only reason I don’t give it five stars is that i don’t have a broad experience with multiple scanners, so I can’t say that this model is right for your particular needs. For me it is so-so on scanning slides and negatives, but excellent for flatbed stuff.

I have not yet attempted to scan transparencies with this scanner, but its performance in scanning reflective images is good, and in line with my expectations from having previously used previous Epson Scanners of the same general character, which performed well.

I have two small reservations. One is the location of the power button, low down on the right hand side. The only place I can put my scanner is in a corner against 2 walls, which means I can’t see this button, and have to grope for it.

Owing to the power-saving feature, which switches it off after a period of idleness, I have to do this almost every time I use it. It would be much better if this most important button were on the front of the machine, with the other buttons (which I never use).

The information that comes with the scanner could also be a bit fuller – for example there is no indication of how one uses it with an image editing application such as Photoshop, which I imagine is what a high proportion of users intend to do – or whether (as was once the case) any driver needs to be downloaded, or what.

In fact the installation of the software from the disk does set it up for Photoshop with no further ado and no need for driver, which is good, but it would save some time and bother in the setup (looking for information) if the information made this clear from the start.

Overall, though, a good machine. I would be happy to recommend it as a good value option for most graphic design purposes using reflective images.

What a fiasco! The installation drivers supplied on the CD don’t work on my Mac and there are no instructions where to find them online. Very poor installation and setup instructions – just the usual visual walk-through that is too small to read, doesn’t apply to the software provided and is unclear.

Very poor. I finally found some drivers on the epson site that seem to work and after about 2 hours struggling I finally got it to scan. The scan result looked pretty good. Only problem is that whenever I try to fire up the Epson software it tells me it can’t find a scanner until I reboot the computer.

The buttons on the scanner also don’t work.

Bought this after viewing YouTube reviews and initially it seemed fine. Scanning prints produced fine images for the computer but when I went to scan transparencies or negatives in the “professional” mode I encountered problems in that I would have to “nudge” the cursor in order to scan each image.

It will not scan more than one at a time. Research on Mac forums showed up this problem. Slows thing down terribly but can’t complain about the quality of the final image file produced. Just the time to complete the multiple scanning.

Maybe needs a software fix?.

After visiting Epson’s site and installing the software, the scanner performed well right out of the box. The unit is light and compact and is powered via the USB cable. The shortcut buttons on the front of the unit work well to quickly scan items using preset settings.

The software menu to set up a scan is detailed and straightforward. I am using a MacBook Pro with Catalina OS. There are presets like “Document” and “Photograph” that give you quick settings without having to adjust all of the options.

There are also menus available that allow more precise control over options like DPI, file format, and color or black/white. I am able to scan and output PDF files for documents just as easily as I can scan color photos and output JPG files.

Overall, this is a good scanner for basic document and photograph scanning for a home office. Good value for the money. The.

This is a great scanner for the price and I like the photo scan features but have been disappointed with the pdf scanning performance. The user guide say it an scan serially up to 100 pages so I decided to scan my daughters year books from school which I thought would be most useful for them as reference.

Well it turned out that the scanner software randomly decides when it has had enough and forces you to save the pages already scanned. This can vary from 32 to 3, the highest I ever got was 32. Contacted the support via Chat and they were great bit could not resolve the issue and decided to ship another unit.

This arrived the next day which is great service but as expected this is not a hardware but software issue. So until they can sort this out I will have to use additional software to merge the many pdf resulting from the scanning of one yearbook.

(Think it was 13 for one 85 page book). Having said this, I did not purchase the scanner solely for this purpose but mainly for scanning old photos so I can live with this, but it is certainly disappointing.

I was looking for something cheap and easy-to-use, that could scan my handwritten notes into multiple page PDF files. My previous scanner took forever and would randomly auto-rotate the pages on me. This scanner works great for this purpose, fast enough for handwritten pages that can’t be collated anyway.

I had to locate the driver online to get it to work, but once installed it worked seamlessly on my windows system, and the driver seems to have a lot of options and is easy to use. Its power runs off the USB port of my computer, so it doesn’t take up a slot on my power brick.

Once set up this scanner was awesome. The only problems I had were probably my making. The pictures need to be fed in quite squarely, but even then you can immediately view them on your computer and refeed until it turns out properly.

250 pictures scanned in an afternoon. I was able to create a file and I separated my pictures into what I wanted in a particular folder and just kept copying until I ran out of pictures for that folder.

Then I would create another folder and start over. It just works slick. I recommend it for anyone wanting to digitize their family pictures.

This scanner is meeting all my expectations and more. Here are a few tips to save time and frustrations. Sort all your pictures by size and by how you will insert them into the slot. Set the scanner to Max DPI 600 since you want to get the best quality picture possible.

The Orange light next to power but indicates that it is set on 600 Dpi. CLean the slot on the output side often and gently. More often if you are using older pics unless you clean the photos before scanning.

DO SCANS IN BUNCHES. If you need to clean and dust them do them all at the same time. It is more convenient this way and saves TIME. If you have 1000’s of pictures, I would recommend a 2nd unit. I am not a salesman or represent this Company but you will cut your time in half if you do.

Don’t expect professional results from this product. You can fix pictures after scanning with PhotoShops or other programs. It is the reason you should scan best DPI. Have patience and don’t jam or force pictures.

The most important thing to remember is that those old photos collecting dust and just sitting there are losing their quality as they age. Personally, the old pictures with the stains and color fading gives character to that photo.

I, highly recommend this product. You will enjoy seeing the old pictures and once in digital mode you have many options. Create DVD slide shows or enlargements of those special photos. There is the VUPOINT Magic Wand I am waiting for to scan those photos that cannot be removed from photo books.

I bought this scanner because of the good reviews, and the price was right. So far, I am not disappointed, but I do have a few comments. The scanner supposedly comes with software preloaded on the SD card that allows you to scan directly to your computer.

However, when I put the SD card in my computer for the first time, it said it had to be formatted? I took it from my Dell 580 and put it in my Lenovo T410 and it said the same thing? My only option was to format the card, which obviously deleted any information that MIGHT have been on it.

So, if you are buying this scanner for this software feature, don’t count on it. For me, I plug the scanner into the USB and scan to the SD card, then using Explorer I move the photos to my PC. Also, There is a limited thickness that the scanner will accept.

I had some curled photos and the edges prevented them from feeding. I had some Polaroids from the ’70s and they were too thick to feed. On the positive side, the feeder feeds the photos straight, the speed is respectable, and the quality is great.

It also seems to crop the photo perfectly. I needed a scanner to scan my 70’s childhood photos and it does that nicely.

I purchased this scanner to create PDFs of original documents for work (while WFH) instead of having to go to Staples to do so. Perhaps one day I’ll find a printer that I like that has a good scanning feature, but b/c of Covid the pickings were slim and I couldn’t find a printer/scanner that I liked that wasn’t too bulky, so I ended up with a simple Brother printer.

I ordered this flatbed scanner to supplement my printer – something that I could easily remove and get out of my sight when I was done. Please note that it is connected by USB port which is included.

I did use the CD Rom to upload the software and it went smoothly, and it took me a few minutes to figure out how to change the options so that I could just scan using the buttons on the printer. (There is a application tool box that is uploaded – and once you access it, you can select the automatic feature).

Well, this scanner worked like a charm. I didn’t really care too much about the quality of the PDFs since I just need legible enough copies, but they were surprisingly clear. I was curious about the how well this scanner would take to photos, so I scanned a couple of photos and to my surprise they came out really good.

I guess I’ll scan old photos when I have some down time. Also, it makes copies. Once I figured out how to make use of the buttons on the scanner, I chose “print” instead of “scan” and my little Brother printer spat out a nice clear copy of my document.

I should also mention that in that scanning tool you can select the program for the output of your files. This probably makes a difference in the quality of the scanned image. Overall I am surprisingly pleased.

The scanner does what it’s supposed to do and it does it fast. I am going to give this scanner 5 stars because I was able to get it running myself without hassle and because it does what it’s supposed to do and does it very well.

My only critique is that the instructions that come with the product could be more detailed, on a scale of 1 to 5 these instructions get a 3 for not being more thorough – these are totally bare-minimum instructions ever.

In Canon’s defense, they provide relatively good instructions on their website.

This is a solid scanner with good scan quality, though not much different than my LIDE 220 that’s six years old. I bought this one because my Mac Studio wouldn’t recognize the LIDE 220, and I wanted a scanner that used USB-C.

This one does. However, it has one irritating quirk: it will regularly “wake up” and run for a few seconds. You can hear the scan head moving back and forth. This happens multiple times throughout my day when I’m not even using the computer it’s connected to.

It got to be so irritating I’ve now unplugged it and will only plug it back in when I need to use it. My old scanner never did this, so I’m not sure what’s going on. But overall I’m happy with this scanner other than that one issue.

I wanted to scan around 200 black-&-white family photos about 45 to 70 years old, and around 800 colored family photos 20 to 50 years old. My initial budget was up to $300, I ended up buying this $89.

“Canon IJ Scan Utility” has the option of scanning for Auto, Document, Custom, Photo, OCR, Stitch, ScanGear and PDF Editor. Understand the Manual thoroughly, especially pages 58 to 79 on “ScanGear” topic.

(3) SCANGEAR: This has “Basic Mode” and “Advanced Mode”. After comparing the output from various options, I decided to do all my scanning work from Advanced Mode tab of ScanGear. I think I got the best scanned images (from photo papers) from this tab.

My work was done diligently; first previewing, then adjusting the settings and then final scanning. I avoided making too large files. I have used it only for one month, which has served my purpose. I do not know the performance-life of the scanner.

Scanning speed was not my requirement.

Pros: i had been using a mustek 1200 that was well over 10 years old, so when i got this it was a big jump forward, its so fast and the scans are so nice and clear, i cant fault it on scanning. Cons: Ok, here are a few things to note about this scanner, I installed the software as instructed when I ran arcsoft photostuido I got the message that some of the dll’s were missing, there was an option to update but as I have photoshop I never had any intention of using it so I just uninstalled it, one of the main reasons I chose this scanner is that it was made by canon, I have been buying canon stuff from way back in the 80’s and it has always been good quality stuff, one thing I noticed about the scanner was it moved about on the desk easily, so I flipped it over and noticed that there are two rubber feet missing off it, there are two on the back and just two empty dimples where the feet are meant to go on the front side.

I emailed canon about this and spent days listening to there bull as to why they were missing, I came to my own conclusion that they had ether been left off to save money or whoever designed the base of the unit put two different sizes of pad recess’s and someone ordered the larger pads thinking they would fit all four corners.

Another thing I noticed was when you lift the lid there is a foam backing to the bottom of it, it has five fixing areas but the one in the middle has not been stuck down, when you lift the lid it looks like the thing is falling apart, my old mustek has all the foam stuck down over 100% of its area.

As for the film scanner attachment, it works well, but could have been a lot better designed, with it installed and the lid blocking the light from behind and your head blocking the light from the front it’s a little fiddly to load, I read a review on this unit before I got it and it said it could scan slides, it will, but your going to have to take them out of there frame, might be a problem if they are the cardboard type frames.

If you have a lot of film to scan I would not recommend this unit, get the next model up or better still a film scanner, not a bad scanner but would expect a much better product for the money and from canon.

Simply didn’t work. Scans showed up blank, even when I downloaded latest driver from the official website. The cable itself doesn’t seem to be the issue since it can connect the device and feed it power.

Will never buy Canon again, there are better brands for scanning equipment out there.

Great tool for scanning images into photo shop. I love everything about this item EXCEPT the “Instructions”. IMHO the instructions are probably wonderful for someone who already knows how to set the unit up and operate it.

For me, (Mister Ignorant,) they are pretty much worthless. After giving up on the digital manual, I simply went tp photoshop and let the software guide my footsteps. Photoshop – Canon – and I have reached an accomodation – The other two entities work out the mechanics of the scan, while I go to the kitchen and make coffee.

P & C have delivered the goods. Beautiful scans with little fuss and commotion.

The scanner took some getting used to. I almost returned it over the bulky automatic naming of scanned documents, but then I began using all the functions and found that the bulky naming (date plus time – perhaps that’s a 16 digit name when all I wanted was 1, 2, or 3 etc.

But the more I used the workflow functions and other programs on it, I slowly began to love it. It only gets 4 stars because set up is taxing, the download instructions, the manual instructions, and the instructions on the scanner are all different.

Luckily at this point one can set oneself on auto pilot and get the thing installed. When scanning individual photos, you name it afterwards. Then you decide if you want it to be a pdf, jpeg, or OCR.

You can make it all three without rescanning. At first I thought the simplistic format left out many necessary features, but eventually I found everything I needed. I had to contact technical support a couple of times, the answered promptly and professionally, there was a small snafu, because of problems in the manual, but they settled that to my satisfaction.

It does not scan 25 pages in one sitting. I do max 10 or 12, and always fan out the paper, front to back and sideways. Then after they are complete, there is button aptly called “add a page” that allows you to continue.

There are no carrier pages for torn or fragile documents. It auto corrects crooked scanning quite effectively. I would recommend it for home use, but I don’t think people are happy with the cloud function, I don’t use it.

I expected top of the line OCR technology, but it is just ordinary.

I purchased this scanner to replace an all-in-one ink jet printer with document scanning capabilities. I’m using this with a Mac, and if you are a Mac user, you know how easy it is to get started with multifunction printers and scanners.

it literally takes 90 seconds. That’s what I was expecting when I got this device. Unfortunately, it cannot be installed using Mac OS’ Printers & Scanners preferences. It seemed to take an unusually long time to get this going (maybe 20 minutes, and I’m pretty fast at setting this stuff up).

I really wanted to like this scanner, but it scans blurry when using the 300dpi grayscale setting. If you use Color or Black & White, or Grayscale in 600 DPI or higher, the scans are clear. I thought that I would just use the 600 DPI option for scans.

However, this creates file sizes that are just too large for archival purposes. The Brother scan software doesn’t allow you to use the high compression PDF option unless you use. 300 DPI. It just seemed like a waste of money to pay this much for a scanner that can’t make quality grayscale scans for documents.

The scanner also has flimsy paper support, so the documents sometimes scan with a slight slant. I ended up returning this scanner and I’m going to pay a little more for something that actually works well at scanning documents.

#1 – This is NOT a fast scanner. It took 1:50 to scan 13 text pages, and another 1:10 to save the 13 pages to a PDF document! #2 – Would NOT connect Wireless. We run a home network, and spent over 3 hours trying to get the wireless to work.

Also dealt with two numbskull Brother “support” people, on the phone, who had no clue what they were doing, or talking about. #3 – There is NO “included” software (as it claims) and it requires a 3. 0 USB cable (won’t work with 2.

0) and that cable also isn’t included. #4 – After you connect a USB cable (since wireless doesn’t work) you have to go to the Brother website to download driver files. #5 – They don’t tell you this ANYWHERE, but in order to actually “scan” something, you need software to run it! This software doesn’t come in the package.

It isn’t readily apparent on the Brother help pages. We had to actually go to the APP store, for MAC, and DOWNLOAD the scanning software from there! WTH?! My husband and I are experienced computer people.

We sell online, and run our own websites. If it took us over 3 hours to get this scanner to work, mostly spent trying to figure out workarounds, I have no idea how the average person is going to get this to work.

I have a Fujitsu Scansnap Scanner, that is over 12 years old, that only takes one page at a time, but it is FASTER and less of a hassle to set up and use, than this 1250W scanner from Brother. Buy at your own risk.

Hopefully you get this before anyone else makes the same mistake as me. First off, here’s the most general summary of the problem for those who just want to skip to the point: It has no driver (CD for installation or program from Canon website that can be downloaded for installation) for the scanner.

The CD that you see in pictures is Windows only. Now that’s all fine and dandy if you’re operating Windows, BUT if you’re buying for any version of Mac as I am, the driver makes the difference in the quality.

Someone from Canon customer support told me when we couldn’t figure out my photo quality and text resolution problems (with ALL types of scan. photo. auto. document. custom scan. jpg, pdf, quality, EVERYTHING) that the driver allows your machine for the Canon scanner to use the Cannon “ICM” (or IC something) for the image quality.

But because there’s no driver for Mac, THE SCANNER USES YOUR MAC ICM WITHOUT EVEN TELLING YOU AS MUCH. So nomatter what you do to tinker with the settings, it will never be what it is intended to be.

Therefore, for Mac users, the product is actually a DOWNgrade from previous models, and I was referred specifically to the CanoScan 210 to replace it (which will now cost me extra to buy new, when I was looking at several used models forcheaper before).

So that’s all you need to know to avoid this one. Hopefully whoever’s reading this and was considering this for their Mac, I got to them before it’s too late. Supplemental stuff now: This is perhaps one of THE most annoying things that can happen with any electronics purchase.

Why? Because it’s deceptive. Just because something CAN work on a Mac machine, it DOES NOT mean that the quality is going to be as worthwhile or what it was intended to be. I’ve seen the same things with USB adapters for video game controllers, and now a vastly more important product.

UBER-annoying! And you won’t even know unless 2 conditions are true: (1) You have high enough standards for your images and work to care about top quality in the first place, and (2) You bother to call customer support and get to the bottom of the issue.

And THEN on top of that, you have to hope that you’re either protected by the ebay moneyback guarantee or have done so within the 15 day return policy (which thankfully I did). But the bottom line is that ALL sellers should say this VERY clearly in the description.

They should know about this issue just like USB adapter people should know how the quality is affected on a Mac. And if they don’t know and state it, then you’re just waiting for things to go wrong and to find out way too late.

It’s probably not QUITE fair to rate this any less than 3 stars or answer “no” to the setup, resolution, and accuracy questions here, but I figure that if I don’t, who will? Until Canon makes it clear that Mac is off-limits despite being functionally operable on those systems, their product deserves some extra negatives.

So if you’re a Mac user like me and happen to have stumbled across this product like I have thinking it would be fully functional when it doesn’t, DO NOT hold back just because it can work fine for another operating system.

Canon and sellers alike will only be more explicit about the functionality when enough people complain. So despite the fact that the item should get all 5 stars and a yes on everything in its ideal state, it’s not like that for our part of the population that has and depends on Macs.

No breaks for them.

This scanner isn’t too very bad for the price. Image quality (so far) is decent but, to be fair, I haven’t tried scanning a very high quality photo. However, a couple of tests showed some issues. The cover is so light that it doesn’t press a slightly warped or creased document flat against the glass.

As a result, those areas were very unsharp. Placing a 1,000-page SQL reference book on the cover did the trick. But, even then, a scan at 1200 dpi was not as sharp as I’d like and required sharpening in Photoshop.

As for other image quality attributes, colors seem accurate. Without modification, the image is a bit flat, but that is easily fixed in Photoshop. The other issue is the software, which is not very intuitive.

You have to dig deep to find the full settings menu. And the instructions are incomplete and just plain awful. You will be thankful for Google. And once you figure out the interface, don’t be impatient.

At any sufficiently high resolution (let along anything above 600 dpi) it is SLOOOOOWWWW. Bottom line: It was a decent deal price-wise, but don’t expect to use this for a high volume project or one requiring tack sharpness at high resolutions.

This review is for Scanner Canon CanoScan LiDE220. This is a flatbed scanner, very light weight and plastic everywhere. I need to scan documents every now and then, nothing fancy, and it fits the need.

It comes with an installation CD. I installed it in a computer with W7, almost everything work but the buttons. I needed to download the last software version to make the trick, after that it worked 100%.

I also used the CD in a W8 and this time worked without problem. The speed of the scan is fine but the quality is bit disappointing for a document, I have to play a bit to find the right settings. Also, for some estrange reason the scanner is not recognizing the USB ports located on the back of the tower, but it work well for the front ports.

No idea why. The EZ buttons are very handy to do a quick scan and avoid staring at the screen. Two things are very disappointing: First the algorithm to set a price. Good for walmart but not for a client.

I decided to go for this scanner with a price of $74. When I came back to buy it, it was $78. Today, that I am placing this review the price is $74. Second, the shipping service, I placed my order on Tuesday and they said the scanner will arrive on Friday.

– You bet, it did not – On Friday UPS said next Monday, but Walmart website still on fix on Friday. On Monday morning I did not see any change, so I called UPS and they told me that probably will be Tuesday, because the item still in the warehouse.

They did not have a clue why. Three hours later, an USPS truck stop by and deliver the item. The scanner arrived in its original box. It was no covered thus everyone could see that it was a scanner left outside a house.

No good.

This is a review for the Epson FastFoto that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. Right out of the box this machine was smaller than I expected yet it is very sturdy. Although it can hold large size photo’s the footprint of the machine is very small.

The only exception is the output tray which does extend out and kind of upwards. This tray takes up a bit more room but I learned very quickly that you do want the tray fully extended when you are scanning photo’s (think of a catchers mitt).

I have been a fan of Epson printers and have had one for the past several years with no issues (Artisian), and have been extremely happy with the printer. So, I was greatly excited that Epson has produced such a great and time saving photo scanner.

It was easy to unpack and set up on a side table I have in my craft room. It was important to follow the set up instructions as you need to download the software before you connect it to your computer.

Once downloaded and connected it is pretty simple to use. The scanner started right up and my 2nd surprise was after putting a stack of 15 4×6″ photos and selecting the scan function from the software; it went to work.

I mean it scanned the stack of photos so fast that they shot out because I didn’t realize I had to fully extend the exit tray. Quick lesson learned. The scanner scanned those photos so fast and I was immediate gratification and they idea that the giant box of family photos I haven’t been able to share could now be scanned so easily.

I’m kind of the novice photographer and I always share photos I’ve taken with family and friends. However, that can take a lot of time. Well, not anymore. The first set of photo’s I scanned I was immediately able to upload and share on Facebook.

The older photo’s from the 1970’s that I scanned all had an orange hue to them. After scanning the software auto corrected the photos and they really looked amazing. Not as good as maybe the best photo shop features but pretty darn good considering they scanned in seconds.

The older photo’s really did get restored to a much better quality. Note, it can not improve the amount of pixels in older photo’s so they may not be as clear (due to older cameras having lower Mega Pixels) but compared to the original; much improved.

If you have ever tried scanning older photos 1 at a time, you know how time consuming it is. This will cut the time down by like 75%. Keep in mind the photo’s that you stack (you can scan 30 at one time) have to be the same size.

If different sizes you should scan separately and their are carriage sheets included to scan those fragile photo’s. My plan is to gather all my like size photo’s (out of my BOX ‘O PHOTOS) and get to work on scanning them all in.

I am also seriously thinking of buying a 6TB external hard drive because I have a lot of photo’s. This product gets two thumbs up from me and a genuine gasp of excitement for a product I have been waiting years for!.

I can say how amazed I was when I heard about this product that was going to be released. I have over 120,000 photos from way before digital days. I have had photos since way back in the 70’s. Some of the photos were very old and delicate.

I was afraid to put them in the scanner but then I saw that the scanner came with a protective sleeve for some photos that are brittle, or damaged. It allows you to slip the photo into the sleeve, and then load it into the scanner, without any further damage to the photo, to me that is a nice addition.

I would also like to say that I have never seen a scanner that works so quickly. The time it took to scan multiple photos all at once and be able to auto correct the photos where I did not have to reopen the photos and edit changes because this time the auto correct feature actually was so smart that it knew what to fix and I was super satisfied about the way the results of it turned out.

Yes people would say and think that the price may be pricey but to be able to multiple scan tons of photos and be able to put the most fragile delicate photos in a sleeve and then load it into the scanner to scan without impacting the photo is well worth it all to be able to cherish memories and turn them into digital to show to everyone and upload to Facebook and to email and send to family members and generations of relatives that once could not have had access to the photos.

The unit comes packaged very nice and I really like the layout and design of the scanner physically itself and the easy interface that the software provides. I highly recommend this to everyone who has tons of photos that would like to turn digital.

Also what really caught my attention was how Epson thought to care about the customers in mind with old delicate photos and provided the sleeve option. I was quite surprised when I found out this option and had to try it out for myself and I was extremely surprised and so super happy with the results the sleeve and scanner provided.

Also besides photos you can scan documents at a fast rate also. If anyone is in the market or was wondering what to do with very delicate photos that they do not want to get ruined then please look into this Epson scanner machine and I promise you that you will not be one bit disappointed.

The Epson FastFoto 640 is the best scanner for archiving your pictures to your hard drive. The initial installation and configuration for the scanner was as simple as downloading the software, installing the software and driver, and plugging the scanner into the computer.

The computer recognized the device right away and I was able to start scanning and saving pictures and documents to my computer. Loading photographs to the scanner was a breeze, I was able to take a stack of 30 at a time, and I was able to scan roughly 120 photos from various albums and start sharing them on social media in under 10 or so minutes without any issues.

This by far is the speediest scanner that I have ever used. In addition, the Epson FastFoto 640 also scans documents and saves them as PDFs. With the Epson scanner, you are able to scan both sides of your pictures, which is nice if you have descriptions, dates or other information on the back of your photos.

In addition, the software allows you to fix minor problems with your photos such as redeye, brightness, color, saturation and will enhance the colors of faded pictures. You are able to have the enhancements or edits performed on the pictures and have the original saved with no edits done.

The included carrier sheet is a pleasant addition to use on fragile or delicate items, just place the photo or photos within the carrier sheet and you are able to scan and save without damaging the originals.

My overall experience with the Epson FastFoto 640 was positive, the scanner is speedy and accurate, and I have not experienced jams when scanning a stack of photos. The scanning software is very good for scanning and saving, but the smart photo fix is okay if you do not have any photo editing software.

I would highly recommend this scanner for anyone who has lots and many non-digital photographs. This is a review for the Epson FastFoto 640 that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review.

This lightweight portable scanner is awesome! Just plug it in the USB port on your device and push the button on the scanner and the document/receipt/card appears on your device screen to be named and saved in the program of your choice.

My son keeps stealing it to scan stuff so we may need two. At first I thought it would only scan and save one page at a time, but if you just keep feeding pages in one after the other, they all go into one document.

Stack feeding doesn’t work on this small device, but truthfully, my full-sized scanner doesn’t do that without jamming either, so I can’t complain. You can adjust the document length (up to 72 inches) through the scanner program.

Now I don’t have to wait until I get to the office to use the big scanner. I can scan from my home office or on the go. Worth the money and no batteries to replace.

When it works it’s a handy product. But it can only handle at most 20 scans before the software crashes. And the **ONLY** way to get it to start working again is to unplug iot and re-attach it. Even though the software probes for the device and sees it, it STILL won’t run until you’ve unplugged it and plugged it back in.

It is incapable of restarting itself otherwise. The software can’t remember settings like preferred file format from one usage (or after it crashes) to another. The “scan” button on the device does nothing even though the application is running.

If your receipt is too long it will DEFINITELY crash.

Purchased in December 2021 and have scanned maybe three dozen documents and photos. Initially worked great and easy to use, but a few days ago, I started getting an error that the ‘scanner isn’t connected’ even though it’s physically connected via the USB cord and the popup box appears in the lower right corner of the screen indicating the Epson scanner is connected.

After waiting several minutes, it eventually scanned. However, today, this happened over and over again. Tried unplugging, re-plugging, connecting to WiFi, waiting several minutes, etc. Continued to get the same error message after messing with it for over an hour.

It’s now in the trash.

Pros: Before buying this scanner I read PC Magazines review for scanners for Mac and other user reviews. (The V800 was more than I wanted to spend so I bought the V550. )Used for scanning old (1950’s – 1980’s) transparencies – this achieved outstanding results compared to a cheaper scanner I had bought, and well worth the extra money.

The quality of detail revealed is amazing. Like comparing the view from a filthy dirty window to a clean one! Colour restoration and dust removal works really well. Easy to use once you have got the hang of it and worth spending a bit of time experimenting with settings.

Inspite of the negatives, I think this is a great product and I wish I had bought it before I scanned 150 boxes of slides on the cheap one I initially bought. The difference in quality of the photos is such that I am now going to go back and re scan those boxes.

If you are concerned about budget, don’t waste your money on a cheaper scanner just buy this one, you won’t regret it. Cons: The instructions and help information tabs are quite technical and assume you are a photographic expert, which I am not.

That said it is reasonably easy to work it all out and the basic fully automated setting gives good results without the need to fiddle with other settings. It does take time to complete a scan of 4 negatives in Professional Mode, but not as long as the system will initially show.

Although it doesn’t tell you to do so, I found you do need to click on the screen to instigate the scan of each negative, otherwise it just sits there doing nothing!Some people have commented on the glass scanner bed getting dusty.

I lift the slide holder off each time and wipe the glass screen with a dry E Cloth for glass which removes any stray dust particles. I also give each negative a quick flick with a large clean make up brush to remove any dust.

In doing this I have not had any problems with dust etc.

I purchased the Epson V550 scanner with a little apprehension as a result of reading others experience with the compatibility with Windows 10. I first installed the software and drivers from the CD that accompanied the scanner and then downloaded and installed the updated software from the Epson site before ever attaching the scanner to my Win 10 PC.

I have easily scanned over 1000 slides, photos and negatives, in which I have only experienced the software hanging after walking away for about an hour, during which time the PC also went into standby mode.

The scan quality and color restoration have worked very well. The ICE mode for scratch and dust removal does extend the scan time considerably (at least by 2 – 3 times normal) but without it set, the scan time per picture or slide were acceptable.

The software has multiple modes to select which have different feature capabilities. For slides, the tray holds up to 4 and the features can be set for each slide on a single scan when using preview.

Over all, I have been happy with my purchase. There is no real photo editing software that comes with the V550 that apparently does come with the V600, so I have also installed Paintshop to edit the photos as necessary.

From my experience I would not hesitate to recommend this scanner.

Pros: Once you get used to the settings that come up when you start the programme, it is as easy as using a digital camera. For ease of use I would recommend the professional setting for 35mm film negatives.

You soon find the best settings by attempting a few different things on the same negatives. For copying of prints, aim for a something which will be give a saved JPEG image of around 3mb and around 2mb for 6 by 4inch prints.

I use ifanview to fine tune the resulting jpeg files if required. This machine is very versatile. I aim to use it with 120 film negatives in future. Cons: Maybe be best to have the on/off switch at the front and not the side!.
