20 Best Hockey Skates For Beginners (2023 Updated)

During summer of 2020, roller blades were tough to find due to Covid. Pro hockey life was selling these for way too high gauging the consumer. The boot is flimsy and lacks padding. The toe of the boot will not stay centered.

The wheels wore away on the pavement to the ball bearings in a handful of uses. True the wheels were not designed for pavement but this was not mentioned nor did they even attempt to hold up due to poor quality.

I was hesitant to write a review on this product because I felt that the skates just weren’t for me, but I am not pleased with them by any means. I have been using them continuously for over 4 months now and they are still extremely painful and leave blisters like the time I first used them.

I tried baking them twice but they still hurt really bad. On top of that, the wheels got worn out about a week after using them. I did not take this to heart since I felt that maybe the product was just defective.

When I contacted Dick’s, they politely worked with me but unfortunately could not do anything about the situation, but they did suggest I contact the manufacturer. However, when I wrote to the manufacturer to see if anything can be done about this, they did not cooperate or respond to me.

So so so so unhappy!!!!!! Bought these online, received them today to find out they have been used. Come on are you serious the box was messed up ,scuff marks/scrapes on the boot. Wheels were obvious someone used them.

I’m assuming it’s all skates they have to offer. So just expect to get used product. Don’t really do comments but I just wanted my new skates. I mean look how beautiful they look.

Amazing ice skates it’s so easy to adjust the size. My daughter loves it.

I come from a more Inline skating background rather than Ice hockey and I ahve used the Marsblade for 9 months now. The Marsblade offers an unique rocker unlike a rockered frame or a natural/banana rockered wheels.

The boot has a very nice fit after they have been brocken in properly. Although the provided laces have to be replaced by proper waxed laces to get the optimal fit. The plastic/nylon chassis could be a little more stiff and restistant.

I would prefer an aluminum chassis over this plastic one. I would really enjoy, if the Marsblade would offer a mounting style where you could swap chassis, as is common whith most Inline skates with either a 165mm/UFS/Trinity/etc.

mounting. Also ice blades which can be attached to the O1 would be nice so you could use the same boot for both inline as well as ice skating. I would also appreciate if parts could be swapped and replaced easier.

There seems to be no way to purchase the original Marsblade wheels or to get fresh axles. Overall a great high quality product, only drawback is that you can’t combine it with standard inline skating frames and mounting systems.

I like the option to bake the boot for a custom fit. never have had any areas that rub or cause pain. I really can tell these skates turn more like an Ice Hockey skate, I can carve sharper, tight turns that I couldn’t do on traditional “fixed” blades.

I also like the feel of pushing off from heal to toe. The only downside is that the skate is a little “heavy” and I typically stay on smooth flat surfaces and paths and not on the streets and sidewalks.

I am an “older” skater and the movement in the blade makes the uneven surfaces a little harder to navigate for me! ha ha!.

I only play ice but I got them to mess around with my kids outside and they have not disappointed. Edges and cross overs feel pretty similar to ice. When skating straight ahead I am able to get full extensions with my stride.

The boot is pretty soft, which I knew going into it. But I couldn’t pass up the 20% off deal on them though. I will be replacing the boots at some point down the line so it’s not a big deal.

Great Skates bought as a first pair for my Granddaughter. The fact they can be altered in size is Wonderfull saves buying new pairs as she older and carries on with the sport. She finds them very comfortable, even though they are new.

Cannot recommend them enough and they pay for themselves in no time with not having to hire skates.

So the skates are too small and I have to return them. My kid’s feet are 255mm from heel to toe using the ‘Mondopoint’ guide – the skates that I’ve been delivered say MP 255 on them, but they don’t fit, and it’s not close.

It’s the length that’s the problem. So I just don’t know. We can put people on the moon but we can’t produce a 255mm skate that fits a 255mm foot. Go figure. There’s hardly anywhere that sells skates in a brick and mortar shop in the UK, but buying them online seems like a complete lottery.

Great boot! though the size chart didn’t exactly, help. I’m size 8 usually, I know my foot measures 273mm so i tried to follow the chart and first got a size 8, that fits but my foot kept sliding, so the second try I got both 7 and 8 and the 7 fits way better! a half size would have been great though.

But the boot itself feels super comfortable! secure sturdiness but soft padding all the way round. Also. the boot is blue. either the colour of the accents have bled onto the white or it’s supposed to be a pale blue, but either way the boot is blue.

and I’ve ordered 3 of them so far. none came white.

Take some getting used to, but theyre great. They offer good support for the ankles without crushing my foot in any places. Did not get any aches after wearing these (Im size 7). They have a great edge too.

Great for the price, easily comparable to the entry level Bauer skates.

My whole experience of purchasing these roller blades from Pro Hockey Life was a waste of time and fuel. Originally I went in person to the store because I wasn’t sure my size and wanted some advice.

The sales person could not help me and suggested I order online. He instructed that only if my online order doesn’t fit to come to the store to return it. I followed his advice and figured since I wear a size 8.

5 ice skate I could try a size 9 roller blade (size 8 was out of stock online). I ordered the RS model size 9. When my online order came the size was too big. This time when I visited the store The Pro Hockey Life staff were very helpful in returning the product.

However I had made two trips to the store and ended up with zero roller blades. It was a total waste of time visiting Pro Hockey Life. I ended up going to Canadian Tire online. Based on my experience at Pro Hockey Life I purchased a size 8 of the Bauer Dart model.

The size 8 Dart ended up being bigger than the size 9 RS model (see photo)! I can’t comment on the quality of either skate because after all these trips to different stores I still have no roller blades.

Its winter now. Oh well, maybe next summer.

I had Bauer XR 800 skates that I had purchased 5-6 years ago. They never quite fit right. Pure hockey used the Bauer scan skate machine and sized my skates appropriately and I was a full size smaller in skates than I thought.

The 3x pro are the most comfortable and snug fitting skates I’ve had in 20 years. They are supposed to be the 2022 equivalent to the xr800 roller and x800 ice boot but I have to say they are seriously upgraded versions of those for sure.

I’ll circle back in a year and update how well they hold up but they are Bauer vapors and they always have lasted 5-10 years for me. I’ll definitely be picking up the ice model in the fall. Also highly recommend super feet, especially if you have flatter feet or or want a snug all around fit.

These skates provide a very smooth ride. The bearings aren’t the fastest, but do well to balance speed and control with the more aggressive stance the 80/76 wheel diameter split provides. And the hard casing adds protection right where you need it.

I had heard some grumblings about ankle pain from other owners, which I had initially as well, but once they break in that completely went away. Took me about a week of regular use (~30-60min a day) to break them in naturally (no bake).

I had a little trouble with a couple of my bearings loosening early on. But that was an easy fix with the skate key provided. And honestly, it’s such a smooth ride, that it was easy to hear/feel the chatter from a loose wheel and fix it quickly before it could become a problem.

All in all, these are great skates that really help fill the gap for skating and hockey in the warmer months. I’d highly recommend them for skaters of all levels.

Fit well for wider forefoot, regular heel, high arch – firm foam, imo good protection & bake well – its a unique boot (ahead of its time) for (imo) players with wider forefoot, high arch, regular heel (thats the foot type that Ive bought them for, 7 times).

If youre new to buying skates. Hints 1. buy the right size (skates are sized differently – your player needs them to fit Now! not next year) 2. buy the right fit (CCM & Bauer run different lines for a reason (all feet are different) 3.

find a skate professional (that sharpens, profiles, bakes, and repairs) with a reputation for excellence 4. have fun (should be 1).

These are the first skates I have ought new. Got them at a price match for a great deal. They are very light and comfortable. I have used them about 10 times outdoors playing shinny and skating on the canal.

Turn great and so far no wear issues to speak of. My front foot is a bit wide so the toe box on these was great unless my sock is too thick. Had to get them sharpened once since I bought them but I think its from the poor ice and hut floor where I usually skate.

I was not able to get a comfortable fit in my Bauer Vapor’s (width EE). After multiple bakes and lots of skating I was still getting some foot pain with the Vapor’s so I decided to try a pair the RBZ 70’s.

They fit my foot like a glove out of the box. Just had a 2 hour skate today and feet feel great. Skates are super light, excellent turn in and extremely stable. Great fit on my foot, absolutely no heel slip.

A great skate if you have a wider foot.

Took baking them and a few skates in these to really break them in. Felt a bit narrow on my left foot at first, but after a second bake, where I tightened the laces a bit more in the molding process and a few extra uses, they were golden.

I think these are essentially the FT2’s (previous top of the line model) with a few upgrades. Thus, these are really good value. Just a hair heavier than the pros and a touch more forgiving/softer, while still maintaining high performance stiffness.

For comparison the stiffness performance index for the FT4 is 180, for the FT4 pro it is 195, for the AS3 it is 190 (?), for the AS3 pro it is 215 and for the 100K it is 175-185. The only reason I’m giving 4 stars, not 5 is that the tongue didn’t offer much of lace bite protection.

I ended up having to upgrade the tongue. Same thickness XS tongue, but with better lace bite protection. It’s a pity because I like the shape and fit of the original ones better. Just not enough lace bite protection.

I know it’s something easily remedied given the new XS tongue system, but at this price point I didn’t expect to have to spend more money on a tongue.

I recently purchased these skates. I was upgrading from 2012/13 CCM-U06 model. The main distinction between these and the FT1 is the outsole engineering. This is still a 2 piece boot but from what I have researched that some players like the 2 piece better than the unified custom fit the net step offers.

I am inclined to think that the 390’s might be more durable where the construction of the 2 piece has extra hardware to keep outsole fused to the boot whereas the 1 piece is just that, only 1 piece so not sure how durable they are if you take a hard puck off of them etc.

This step in evolution is being welcomed by elite platers in the game but at the end of the day this skate is magnificent. Very light weight and offers all the same features as the FT1 model. Ive only played a few games and I’m still breaking them in despite having them baked upon purchase.

I also opted to get a quad 1 profile on the blade. From my understanding, these are a 2017 model skate but relevant until 2019 in terms of little change between models after 2017 with the exception of top tier offering one boot construction.

I am not sure if anyone else bought these and wants to write up what their experience is as mine is still new. The hyper glide blade does hold an edge longer for sure. Between quality steel. Currently, I am toying with the idea of not lacing upper eyelet especially during break in process to generate more forward flex as the boot is stiff and firm with heel lock technology.

SO you have to ask yourself, do you pay 1k for the FT1 or 2 for the one piece or pay a few hundred bucks lesser to get the same skate with the exception that “energy transfer” is supposedly better in one piece design.

Ive read complaints that in a one piece you have to feel fully comfortable being “locked in” because the boot conforms that much more. For some players, this was considered a drawback because some players like the feeling of a little movement in their skate to manipulate their turns, cuts etc.

I understand the one piece is lighter and lighter certainly enables one to skate faster but literally at what cost. Is it that big of a difference to go from high end second tier skates (pro level) to a one piece design when that design is currently in a testing phase where the technology is still so new? I wanted all the benefits of a top yeti skate which this offers but sticking with the traditional 2 piece design because its been tried tested and true until now of course.

The only thing I like about the newer skates is the way the blade gets changed out with the dial on the back of the skate holder. This skate still has the bolts locking runner in place. Still easy to change but not as easy as turning a dial.

Just have to assess your bolts every so often to make sure they are loosening from hard skating game situations. Although, could the plastic dial break if you take a puck off it too? Either way, these skates offer an elite level of features and are quite relevant even in 2020/21.

I have skated many years on the CCM Super Tacks but they were not in stock and I was in desperate need of new skates. As it turns out these were a good fit for me and I experienced very little discomfort during the break in period.

I was told these were the closest fit to the Super tacks I’ve used for years and I have to agree. I feel a little like I am more on my toes with these then the previous super tacks but that could just be me or the sharpening of the new skates.

I’ve since gotten use to it and have no issues at all. I would highly recommend these Skates. I am a senior hockey player at 62 years of age and been skating since I was 9. These are a great bang for your buck, good quality and comfortable skates.

I gave the 4 stars not 5 only because I am a huge Super tacks fan other wise I have no complaints with these skates. Also customer service was very professional and helpful during the purchase I was over all very pleased.

I bought these skates about 2 weeks ago. I was in the CCM 68 K Ribcore model for about six years and found them to be a terrific leap ahead to the leather Grafs models I had been skating in for the past Twenty years.

The 80Ks are now a leap ahead of the 68 Ks. At first I had a concern that the right skate had been coming loose. I went with wax laces-nope still coming loose. I took the foot beds out to dry them and found that the custom foot arch was in place under the right footbed and not the left.

So the removal of the arch support solved the issue as I am very flat footed. ( this allowed my right foot to sink further into the skate locking the heel down better )The ankle padding on these skates were a big selling to me as I have had a lot of clappers to the ankles.

O. K. having said that, I find that there is an excellent transfer of power from skate to ice through the entire skating stride. I have toe-picked at least once taking-off from a stand still, as I had to get use to having so much blade again.

( might have to get these puppies profiled ) Agility-in spades as these skates have the right combination of forward flex and stiffness. I have wanted these skates for about three years and have found them to meet all my expectations and worth the wait.

Bought these skates for my daughter who has outgrown the expandable skates that you always buy for little kids. She didn’t want figure skates, so this was the choice. They are definitely stiff at the beginning, but then they tend to soften up with use and mould to the shape of her feet.

Tying the laces is the hardest part at first as the boot is stiff and you almost need 3 hands to squeeze the boot so it’s tight on the foot and then the other 2 to pull the lace. These are much better than the hard plastic style of skates which never seem to soften up or mould to the foot.

The build and quality of the skate is good. We’ll see how they hold up for the time that they fit as kids do keep growing and outgrowing everything they wear. But I imagine that they’ll be outgrown long before they could ever wear out.

Better but if they’re on sale especially if you have to buy new ones every year or so due to growth.

I went to pro hockey life to purchase hockey skates for my son after being fitted on the electronic fitting machine we were told size 7, they did not have size 7 in the store so we were instructed to order them but they will be in and it in two days so I ordered them online before I left the store feeling confident I will get them before he needed them the following Wednesday.

I must let you know that I waited over 45 minutes to be served that day and being overlooked and many male customers were service before me. I did bring this to the attention of management at a later date.

A day later I got the email indicating the skates would not be in for 4 more days which was not what I was told. Feeling frantic I went online and found a size 7 at Sportchek So my son and I went to sport check to try on the seven skates the gentleman told us that was not his size and they were way too small he would need a 7.

So I am in the store and they only have a size 7 and now I need a 7. 5, the gentleman was very accommodating and found another brand of skate that my son liked equally that they had an a 7. 5, he took the time to fit my son and went above and beyond and gave me the skates for the same price as the other one.

I guess my advice or ask would be to a work on customer service skills with your team and also make it right for the not so perfect service that you delivers to me on that day.

These skates are the most comfortable boots I’ve ever worn. I’ve been skating for over 20 years. I played select/travel growing up, played college and am now enjoying beer league. The construction of these skates is top notch.

It felt like a sneaker on my foot. I think they’re the most visually appealing skates Bauer has made in the last few years. I did ultimately exchange them for hyperlites, but only because I vapors suit my skating style more.

If you are a bigger skater, in either height or weight, and have a really strong stride where you use mostly the middle of your foot or heel of your foot to push off and use your hamstrings and tops of your quads to generate power, these will be your favorite skates.

They really thrive with a much bigger and stronger leg than I have. The edges are crisp and stable. No problem changing direction or stopping at all. I don’t really agree with the assessment that these aren’t an agility skate, you just have to have a much more strong, powerful skating stride than I have to be able to change direction quickly.

If you’re someone that uses more of the toe or ball of your foot for control and like a little more stiffness in the front of the skate than the heel, the hyperlites will suit you better. I loved these, they just didn’t work out mechanically for me.

I’ve been using these skates for a little over a year now (4 days a week – 2 in games and 2 coaching) and I am neither impressed nor disappointed in the skates. I can honestly just say that they aren’t the right skates for me.

The good: – Break in was super fast and the skates are very comfortable (love the new fit system). – The coating on the steel does seem to really make a difference, I definitely feel faster on the ice.

– The flexible tendon guards noticeably help with long strides. – The quality of the skate is top notch! Over a year of usage and they are holding up fantastically well. The bad: – They feel heavy… almost clunky when I’m on the ice.

– The steel seems soft and/or fragile. It knicks and dulls incredibly easy. It seems like after every game, I have an issues with the steel. – Turns are not fluid in these skates. I seem to have a “skipping” issue when making sharp/quick turns at higher speeds.

The skate seems to lose edge and skip across the ice. I’ve tried everything to correct this but it happens just about every game. – I left the skates in my bag for about a week while I was on vacation and they (unsurprisingly) picked up an odor, however, I now can’t get rid of it.

I’ve washed them inside and out and they still just smell kinda gross… not sure why the smell is sticking like glue to them. The skates themselves are good and the quality is great but I will be switching to another skate.

I find myself actually having to think about my skates while I’m in game and how off they feel… I’ve never had that with any other skates before. While I can 100% vouch for the quality, I just can’t use them anymore.

They are nice skates, I originally tried vapors but the weird lace hole pattern on the inside of the ankle is not good for people with big ankles so I ended up with supremes after trying vapors. The guy that fit me said per the scan I was a size 10 fit1, I’m actually a 9.

5 potentially a 9 but that might be just a little too small. Either way that scan gets you close but it’s not always right, more for show than anything. Honestly the shoe size conversion bauer has on their site is more accurate.

Be aware these skate will pack out so they may feel good when you first put them on but they will pack out after heating and skating. My advice is you want your toes to be brushing the end cap and for the skates to be a little uncomfortable at first.

Either way the guys fitting skates at pure hockey could have done a better job but in the end after finding the correct size myself using bauers chart I am happy with these skates. I am coming off bauer 7000 size 10.

5 D so probably size down a whole size if you have older bauers. Also the only difference between vapors and supremes is the insteep and the lace holes on the inside of the vapors being set back making them not good for bigger ankles.

The toe caps are identical.

Living far from a pro shop, I bought two pair of skates over the internet and both were unsatisfactory. So first thing, get yourself to a real pro shop and get scanned. I had been skating in EE skates or D width for years to alleviate pain from my right little toe getting squished.

I got scanned at Pure Hockey in San Jose and discovered my width was really a C. I had Easton skates for years and wanted a lighter, high performance skate. I was fitted into a Bauer 3X, size 6 Fit1, baked, and they punched out that toe area for me.

This made all the difference in the world. Now I have to get rid of the D and regular width CCM skates that I had previously purchased over the internet and was wearing with thick socks. not a good solution to one trouble spot.

One factor to be aware with these Bauer 3X skates is that there is a carbon insert in the tongue so you will not be able to wear them outside your shin pads like I always did. However, unlike my CCM RibCors, which have a humongous tongue, the tongue on these Bauers can go under your shin pad and you won’t even notice i.

e. it won’t feel like it’s hanging up and impeding your mobility.

Bought these a couple months ago. Great for beginners. No issues. Great that they come over-sharpened as well. Wish the laces were a little longer to tie around the ankle.

Good basic skates to go out skating for a few hours… my son loves them. He wears a size 10 in shoes and we got a size 8 in those skates which fit perfectly.

They are great skates very stylish, they were a gift for my girlfriend who is a novice when it comes to skating but she found them to be very comfortable and got on with them straight away.

These Bauer X-LP hockey skates are very comfortable, very good quality for low price and wide enough for comfort. These are great beginner hockey skates and would highly recommend! Needed skates for Open Skate and rentals are so uncomfortable.

I could wear couple these Bauer skates for couple hours without any problems. Am very happy with my purchase.

I’m very pleased with these as a first pair of skates for my adult-sized 12-year-old. Assembly quality is good and there’s plenty of interior and tongue padding. The outer shell is plastic all around, but they look cool nonetheless.

These skates look and feel much nicer than the entry-level CCMs I nearly bought him from the big box store. Top-notch customer service from Pure Hockey.

I have a wide foot and heel and it is almost impossible to find skates that fit. I have tried the AS3 Pro wide, Hyperlite, Supreme 3s pro fit 3 without being comfortable. The AS3’s had the xs tongue touching my foot which bothered me and had too low of boot volume.

The Bauer fit 3’s heel was narrow for me and pinched. I decided to wait for the ASV Tacks in hopes they would fix the toe cap and tongue system and boot volume. THis ASV is out of this world for comfort in the wide.

They have fixed the low volume and the toe cap so no longer rubbing on the top of the foot. I knew these were great as soon as I put them on and I am glad that I didn’t settle for the other skates and waited for these to come out.

Go out and try a pair on if you have wide feet I’m sure you will love them. Price is a little high but they are the comfiest skate I have worn right out of the box.

The quality of these skates blows me away. First off, the feel and comfort is great. I did have to bake them two separate times to get them fully formed, (personally I think the first bake wasn’t as hot as it should have been).

After forming them with some super feet inserts, they are amazing. The padding and construction are quality. These boots will definitely take a beating and still maintain their aesthetics. The liner has a good feel and texture and the padding really for a to the ankle(I have pronounced boney ankles).

Lastly they are extremely responsive and lightweight meanwhile providing durable protection.

I purchased these skates to go skating occasionally on public indoor and outdoor rinks. They are very light and warm, which makes them easy to carry and comfortable to use outdoors on cold days. They are significantly lighter than my girlfriend’s figure skates.

I walked half a mile to a city rink with them in a backpack, skated for an hour, and walked back without feeling fatigued. The blades are centered on the foot so that my ankles don’t bend in or out, and the skates come sharpened out of the box so you can take them on the ice right away.

One thing to note: I researched Bauer skate sizing before purchasing and I am glad that I did, as it is recommended to get 1 to 1. 5 sizes down from your normal shoe size. I wear size 9 shoes so I purchased these in size 8, and they fit me well to slightly loose.

One thing I dislike is that it is hard to tie the laces to be tight around the upper ankle due to the shape of the plastic exterior, so they don’t hold on to my ankles as tightly as I would like. Also, the material feels a little on the cheap side.

If I were concerned about performance and durability, I would probably want better skates, but as I am only a casual skater they fit my needs without having a big price tag.

I echo the other review of these skates that the Women’s sizing seems a little off. I’m a women’s 8 in Rollerblades, W 8. 5 running shoes, 7 (Men’s) indoor soccer shoes. and yet the W8 in these skates seems at tad big.

It was close enough that I added an orthotic insert and swapped out some longer hockey laces to make them work, but had trying them on locally been an option, I would have been curious to see how the W7 fit.

As the other reviewer mentioned, the EURO size seems to be the most accurate. (I have some W8 / EURO 40 cycling shoes. these are listed as a EURO 41. ) Try them on if you can.

I have a pair of Bauer hockey skates that I typically wear when I skate with my son. However, when I seen these I knew I had to have them & they are everything I thought they would be and more! The fur makes them very comfortable & easy to wear for a lot longer than my previous skates.

Much warmer also. Fit is great & with a name like Bauer I know they will last! Hope these get me out on the ice more!.
