20 Best Hiking Zip Off Pants (2023 Updated)

I am between sizes right now (4-6). I have a lot of leg and butt muscle and most hiking pants tend to bind in that area. I read the reviews and people said these run small and I figured, perfect! a larger sized 4 :).

So those are a bit short on me actually but that seems the norm in all these hiking pants. When not bloated, the waist is comfortable or a bit (comfortably) loose. If I’ve eaten a big meal, it’s tight on the belly but I can still move around without strain on the snaps.

The nice thing is the legs/hip/butt. These don’t sag in the crotch while binding in the butt and I can get my knee high enough without any tug that I know steep steps will be no problem. I can do front/side kicks without any binding.

I like that they roll into a shorter version and they are nicely water resistant. Since I won’t be eating a heavy meal before hiking, the waist should not be a problem. I honestly hike in yoga pants usually, but I bought these for chillier weather and when doing some off-trail snag-prone ‘bushwackin’.

But these might become my new go-tos. Colombia’s big miss here is the waist. They should have added a little elastic in one side and allowed for ladies “moon time” bloat. If your weight is heavy in legs, I recommend err on the side of 1up size.

If your heavy in the middle, thin in butt/thighs, these might not be ideal for you.

I have been trying out multiple hiking pants for a few years and finally found these which I love. I tried on multiple brands at the store and had issues with different pants’ waist being too baggy, the crotch seam length being absolutely tiny, or no room for muscular thighs.

These pants are the perfect fit. They have a little bit of stretch, great waistband, and a long enough crotch seam length that you don’t have a wedgie going down the trail. I find the material is very flattering (doesn’t make a ton of noise but is still thin for breathability) and mostly durable.

I’ve had them for over a year and have used them on many casual city walks, road trips, car camping trips, and backpacking trips. I’ve slid down granite in them accidentally but the only hole I put in them was from sitting on a log with a pointy branch (more of a fluke coincidence).

The length is perfect for me at 5’4″ when I have thick hiking shoes on (otherwise they do hit the ground) and the pockets fit my iphone 12 mini pretty well (it looks a little funny but it doesn’t infringe movement or feel like it’s going to fall out).

I wish Columbia would make these in black as I could then buy a pair for field work and city travel.

My third pair of these pants! Perfect for hot weather, or when needing quick-dry fabric, a bit of “give” to the pants, etc. My previous pair were purchased in “regular” length, and OK if wearing shoes/boots and/or if hems rolled up and secured with the hidden tabs, but a hair long for barefoot or thin sandals.

So THIS time, I ordered in “short”, and length is perfect. ;D Still long enough for boots/shoes and not too long for sandals/barefoot. The fabric is smooth and comfortable on the skin but seems durable enough for general hiking and camping, wading in creeks etc.

The dark charcoal gray color is ideal for multi-purpose use, not as “intense” as black, and a hint more “dressy” than tan. Perfect for outdoor entertainment venues, bird watching, hiking, travel, you name it! 😀 I purchased this, and previous pair a size up from previous pair, as I wanted something a bit less form-hugging for being in public areas, although there was adequate range of motion to smaller size due to stretch.

True to size if you like form-fitting.

I have worn this line of pants for many years now. They have always been one of my top picks for hiking, kayaking and other outdoor activities here is at times hot and humid Southwest Florida. These pants are light and airy and move well.

They do not really stretch but they do not encumber free movement so they don’t need to stretch. What you should know. I believe these are most comfortable ordered 1 size up from your normal size. That is my experience, yours may be different.

What I do not like in the latest version is the now extra shiny look which is likely for UPF 50. I would rather have the older look which I believe was rated 30 Ultraviolet Protection Factor. I also do not care for the OmniShade applique branding now prominent on the leg and not show in the website marketing images.

The front top pockets could stand to be a tad bit deeper. All in all these are great pants if you are outdoors and value lightweight, freedom of movement, and quick drying.

I own three pair of these and I use them exclusively for when I travel overseas, which is often. The belt doesn’t have to be removed when the TSA does their thing, and I appreciate that. They compact enough to take up little space in my luggage.

They have snazzy cargo pockets that I never use, but they quickly identify me to everyone as an old guy. The fabric is tougher than it looks; don’t be afraid of its thinness. As they are constructed of nylon, they are quick to dry after you’ve been drenched or if you have to launder them in a hotel room sink.

The only real gripe that I have is the *mesh* pockets. Do NOT put car keys in those pockets! One key will invariably poke through and saw the mesh open and then you will have all your coins and stuff escaping down your trouser leg.

Pockets need to be tougher!.

This is the 6or 7 th pair of these paints i own. i now have every color. They are very comfortable, durable, good looking, very stain resistant, offer so many pockets. They wash well with few to no wrinkles.

The first time i wore the light tan we went for a birthday celebration. The bread served was dripping in butter and of course it dropped on the paints. I thought for sure id be ordering another pair.

Well, they washed beautifully. I wear them all year long for almost any occasion. They fit great too.

Put plainly these pants live up to Fjällräven’s three principles: functionality, durability and dependability. It can be dizzying to compare so many different brands in an effort to whittle down and suss out which product fulfills that matrix of needs and wants that align with budget and thriftiness.

Ultimately, I have come to the conclusion that you’re better off putting up more scratch for a garment that you will better enjoy for longer. Firstly, the concept behind these pants makes them a complex garment.

You will notice immediately, that these pants have a complex sewing pattern (or whatever the term is for garment schematics). Amazingly my pair did not come with any loose threads, and there are plenty of areas that are buttressed with double and even triple stitched sections; again, maybe not the right terminology but I see evidence of care and attention to detail and execution.

These hiking pants have many more features than just being lite and convertible to shorts. They feature a durable four-way stretch fabric in the seat of the pants for free and easy movement, maybe even some much needed breathability.

The pockets have inside of them mesh compartments to help keep objects separated, which avoids them clumping into a bunch. I hate it when you have a big pocket but everything is collected together like a knot.

This mesh compartment, an intelligent design, keeps objects organized, which goes a long way to making you feel more comfortable during the hike. The leg endings have straps, which improve comfort because as you change your footwear from full length boots, mid-boots to trail runners, you can adjust the leg endings accordingly.

Again, this feature would be more of a nuisance if it were not well constructed and durable. Fortunately, Fjällräven’s commitment to dependability is exemplified by their choice of materials, their intelligent design of the concept and a clear focus on craftsmanship.

I highly recommend these pants/shorts. To boot, they look great and you can even wear them out around the city. The exceptional look of these pants are a patently Swede hallmark.

Want to preface by saying that in the last couple of years I’ve become a bit of a Fjallraven fanboy. But that’s completely due to the great quality of each item and the service I receive from them. I have the Abisko Light zipoff pants and they are truly AMAZING hiking pants.

I thought I’d try these too as they’re made of an even lighter and wholly stretchy fabric. They are great! They’re the lightest version of the G1000 canvas, still waxable, and still durable. The fabric is light and falls well, and stretches nicely for a super comfortable fit and hike.

The zippers and pockets are smooth and deep and overall great quality. Fjallraven is one of very few contemporary brands which represents old-fashioned quality expectations. Truly great pants and brand.

They’ll never disappoint.

I have a pair of Keb trousers that I wear constantly in the winter, and hoped for a similarly functional, comfortable pant that would be more comfortable when it’s hot. These were comfortable backpacking in 80* weather, thanks to the lighter fabric and side vent zips – and then I appreciated the ability to lock everything down and close the gaiters at the bottom once we got higher up and hit snow.

They’re a little higher waisted than the Kebs, which was great for the waistband to be above (not directly under) where the hipbelt for my pack sits. The color is probably closer to orange than red, a little bit off from the model photo.

I love Fjallraven pants because they stand up to anything. I don’t worry about catching them on something and tearing them, I can fall in the snow and stay dry, sit on whatever surface and feel protected and not clammy.

They’re definitely an investment but I’d highly recommend them!.

I have many pairs of these pants and for a while, they were perfect! Then, OR kept tinkering and changed them. I don’t like the recent changes. In the most recent edition of these pants, there is no longer zippers on the back pockets and they have changed the front closure.

This means that the bum pockets are no longer secure (and too small to really hold anything), and the front is awkward (especially when these pants are just one layer of many!). What used to be snaps are now buttons and the waist tie is inside instead of outside – it always seems to get caught up in the zipper and it just takes more time to do up/ undo the pants.

I realize these are all minor things and I would likely not complain about these pants if OR had not changed the fit of them. What used to be a pant that felt like it was well designed for a female body (with wide hips and strong hiking legs) now feels more like unisex/ male sizing that is tight on my thighs and loose in the waist.

Why OR had to mess with perfection I don’t know, but I miss the old version. Also, I wish that when significant changes are made (like sizing), the clothing item would receive a new name.

Overall these are very functional hiking pants, with a few areas that could be improved on. I bought the size that matched my measurements in the size chart, and I’m glad I didn’t size up. Pros: -Long lengths available in all sizes, and in good basic colours (black) -Deep front pockets, useful back pockets and cargo pocket -Drawstring and belt loops – the waist is a little big on me, but the drawstring fixes that -The ankle cinch cords are handy -Super stretchy Cons: -Not super breathable -I keep trying to drop things into a cargo pocket on my left leg as well as the right.

The pockets are so nearly perfect, but please just add a cargo pocket on the left leg (it doesn’t even need a zipper)! -Probably a niche problem because I bushwhack through some fairly unpleasant shrubbery in these for work, but the fabric snags quite easily (doesn’t rip though), and they pick up burs like nothing else.

-It would be cool if the tall sizes came in more colours. I appreciate that I can buy them in black, but the Fatigue green would also be nice (and a cool-toned brown would be perfection).

Lightweight, and comfortable. And the creases fall easily from the fabric. I have three pairs of these trousers and they’re perfect for casual wear… hiking, walking the dog, trogging around. Far more comfortable than jeans.

Great trousers with spf rating and zipped pockets. Just what you need for a country walk or ramble. Dry super fast after washing and fit as described.

These are lightweight very comfortable (but of a shell feel) good cut. Partially waterproof. Love them

For many years, I was buying the North Face cargo pants with zip off legs. The material was very durable, lightweight, quick drying, and easy to clean. Then they stopped making them with that wonderful material.

I bought up every pair my size I could find, and only recently have I needed some more of these pants. I finally thought about Bass Pro Shops and eureka! I found very similar pants with a great material made by Red Head for half the price.

I have bought several pairs and find that the sizes are consistently correct and the sewing/workmanship is excellent. I can see how they have stayed in business since 1856.

After a year of wear-and-tear between 4 pair of these pants (hiking/biking 5-6 times/week) they have held up very well and I expect they will last for another year or two. However, now at 72, weight gain had snuck up on me and by committing to a measured caloric intake and continued exercise I lost 25 pounds, thus the need for new pants.

So it made sense to buy another two pair of the best pants I’ve owned in years. and as the review title says. they are durable, lightweight, cool and zip-off convertible.

These pants are great. The material is light, water repellent, plenty of pockets, convertible to shorts, and the side zippers not only make it easy to wear high topped boots, when unzipped they provide great ventilation.

About the only down side is the velcro pocket flap fasteners. They stick when I don’t want them to stick. and they stick really good.

The pants are great, they fit really well and the quality is very good. I didn’t know what size would fit considering the sizes on the website, and I checked with a representative, I provided the usual size (measures) and he/she indicated their corresponding size.

Great pants for lightweight packing. Pleasant material, good quality, very versatile. I got the right size according the size guide easily, delivered quickly. I am happy with the purchase.

This is my third hiking pants from Mammuet. Great quality with stretch in order to enable all kind of movements and at the same time have a good / tight body fit.

I am really happy with these pants. I have a pair of the revolvr pants that I love for the material, fit and functionality. I wanted a second pair that was also more water repellent, while still being light as I am traveling in warm climates.

These renegade pants do not disappoint. They are not as loose as the revolvr, even though these are the classic fit not tapered, but still fit well and look really great. The pewter color looked lighter on line, which I was worried about.

They are slightly darker in person and I am very happy about that. Like the extra zippered pockets.

The pants performed well. Last weekend I tested out my new pants on a 13 mile hike. There was enough change in terrain to test out the water repellent capabilities and comfort in climbing. I have athletic legs from a lot of running and hiking and the thighs fit fine throughout the entire hike.

I wore the pants on the way up, and shorts on the way back. They fit well both ways. My note 10 cell fit well in the upper pocket. My keys started poking my thigh through the mesh pocket so I moved them to the cargo pocket.

I like the greenish khaki color. I am looking forward to using them on my Cactus to Clouds hike later this year. These pants are the best combination of deep pockets and roomy thighs.

I wear Levi’s 559 32×34 and I purchased a 32×34 in these as well. Waist was a little tight but a 33 would probably be perfect. Biggest problem was when sitting. The zipper chokes up around the thighs.

Obviously the zipper won’t stretch so it turns into a tourniquet. I do a lot of squatting so your mileage may vary. My old TNF convertibles were cut roomier but it seems like the world is moving towards dudes having twigs for legs.

I will start by admitting, my sizing when purchased was incorrect so it was a little tight around my waist and crotch. I bought a second pair of pants from a different retailer (can’t explain why in review) and got the right size.

Now I love the feeling of a pant that holds close to your legs, but this was a bit much. I don’t know who’s legs these pants were designed with in mind, but it definitely wasn’t for people with bulkier legs.

Whether it’s fat or muscle, these pants are unforgiving towards any thighs that dare to be thick. I’ve noticed that a lot of OR gear is designed really small. Gain a little girth anywhere and it’s time for the next size up, no room for fluctuation.

Also very common for the lengths to be good but the widths to be petite, which can make finding an adequate size very difficult for anyone who’s still the same height but has changed their width. Very little inclusion of all bodies in OR’s designs for sure.

Now, enough about the fit. The pants were comfortable against parts of my skin, and the versatility of the pant is pretty high. Aside from my thighs, I never had an issue going from pants to shorts, everything worked very well.

I was happy to see that the pants offered some level of water resistance as well. If you have a consistent weight/the right body shape, these pants are perfect. Otherwise you may not be able to get the right fit.

As for the functionality of the pants, they are fantastic and everything you could need in a good convertible hiking pant. I just wish they weren’t designed for the thinnest bodies out there.

I love these pants. The design of the zip-off legs is different than all the others I have seen. When you are wearing them as shorts, they don’t feel like convertible pants that end in a zippered hem.

When you take off your boots, the legs zip open AND the fabric is stretchy! I love the pocket on the thigh, it is zippered and holds a cell phone handily. The pockets on the pants are large enough to hold a map as you hike down the trail.

I love it. Down sides? Yes a couple. The zippers on the legs could be color coded or have something that lets you know which leg goes to which zipper. The drawstring in the pants (I tend to lose weight hiking) was really short and hard to tie.

That’s all. Buy these convertibles if you want something better. I plan on buying another. I wore these pants backpacking in the Wind River Range for 8 days in August.

These are now my go to for 3 season hiking/mountaineering (usually configured as shorts). I have a pet peeve about shorts: I despise bulky, baggy shorts. Unless you’re buying a European brand, almost all casual and outdoor shorts from US outdoor brands these days have huge leg openings at the knee.

I have relatively large, muscular legs from lifting, but most shorts still look ridiculous on me (and most other guys too) because of the bulky cut and flared openings at the knees. These pants from OR fit perfectly and fall about 2″ above my knee when zipped off as shorts.

I’m 5’8″ tall, 31-32 waist, 23″ quads and the 31×32 fit perfectly: not tight, not baggy. More positives: – They’re very stretchy and allow unrestricted movement for climbing, bouldering, etc. – Brilliant zipper placement means no one will know these are convertible pants.

I’ve been wearing these around with my wife for months. She just thinks they’re hiking shorts and still has not noticed that they’re convertible pants. Most convertible pants with bulky, obvious zippers look like they should put you in contention for outdoor dork of the year.

Not so with these. – Spot on, very high quality construction and very durable – Very nice, light-ish weight for 3 season use All in all an excellent option for most outdoor/athletic guys with slim/normal/muscular, but not bulky builds.

If you’re a bulkier lifter or someone with a more endomorph build, these may not offer enough room. Hope this review is helpful.

I’m 5’4, and I usually wear size 14 or 16, L or XL. Bought the grey pair in XL last summer and they’ve been my favorite pants ever since. I’ve gotten several compliments on how flattering they are. They’re extremely comfortable and look as good as they did when I bought them, now 8 months later.

Potential cons for some people: they are fairly fitted with a lot of stretch, and when you have large items (e. g. phone) in the pockets, it looks a little funny. But I’ll take the practicality of pockets any day.

Also, yes- as many reviewers mentioned, the pants are more fitted around the calves and ankles, and a bit looser in the thigh and bum area. But this works for me, as I have a bigger booty. It all adds up to a flattering fit, and I don’t find them any more difficult to take off than any other pair of leggings I own.

They don’t slide down and don’t dig into my waist. What’s nice is that they look dressier than my other leggings, and they’re somehow more comfortable than my other leggings, so I can feel slightly more stylish and also more comfy.

I’ve read reviews by others. Especially people who previously owned similar style pants and I share their views. The reason I ordered this pair is because I love my two, 6 years old pairs and wanted to add another color.

I was expecting to get the same pants style. I wear them at least once a week, naturally they get washed often. The color didn’t fade and the material didn’t wear out. I liked the old design, the back pockets (without zippers) and the front pockets with flap located below the hip.

The new design, on the other hand, feels lighter (which tells me it probably will not last as long and may rip easily). The shape, style and locations of the various pockets had changed (some are missing entirely).

I got nothing against this style, but it should have been an addition to the original NOT a replacement. At least that way customers will have a choice.

So to preface, I have to say that I take issue with a majority of womens hiking pants (and outdoor gear in general), and unfortunately these pants are no exception. The zip is SO tight in the thigh, I genuinely can’t believe they are so positively reviewed.

I’m a relatively small person, typically a 26 or 2 in pants. I got these as a gift but my parents know my usual complaint about womens clothing, so they ordered a size up (4). They’re definitely too big around the waist but a belt fixes that.

But the zipper! I literally can’t comfortably sit in them, like I have to change into these pants at the hike because I can’t sit in them in the car. When will clothing manufacturers realize that many women don’t care about their silhouette for outdoor activities and just create comfortable clothes with reasonable pockets??.

I bought two pairs of those pants so you might ask yourself why four and not five stars? These are fantastic pants, very comfortable, and Exceedingly well-made. If you take any look at the stitching you’ll see how great the construction is and the great attention to detail.

There is one minor engineering problem, and that is the size of the pockets, which I’m sure you’ll weighed in other reviews. I bought these pants despite that, and I did find a pocket that would house my iPhone XR plus.

The pocket is not a particularly comfortable fit, and not situated in the best manner, but it does accommodate well. As others have mentioned, items put in the small frontal pockets do tend to work their way back out, but if you know this and you know that you can carry your iPhone in this pair of pants, I would highly recommend buying them, especially at the discounted price I received.

There is also a small zippered pocket in the rear, see if you have anything to really worried about you can secure your items very well.

Based on the size chart, I was worried these would be too big. They are a little tight though. Why have a size chart and not follow it? They are great light weight pants and are attractive. I usually wear a size 16 in most clothing and the size chart indicated that would be my size.

The 18 is a little tight. Also, when I filter for plus sized clothes only three options come up on the website. When I do reviews, there is no option for the actual size I ordered. Can we stop making the size that the average American woman wears an after thought?.

For years I’ve routinely sprayed my clothing with permethrin, which worked quite well. But re-treatment is required every 2-3 washings (the product ways 6 washings, but not true). For the money spent on permethrin refills, it was worth getting these BugsAway pants.

When others were being bitten by black flies, mosquitoes or horseflies, I watched them buzz around & fly away without settling. The 50 UPF & nylon fabric are big plusses, especially for traveling. The reason for not giving 5 stars: 1) The hips fit fine, but the waistband was 2″ too big & had to be altered; 2) The stretchy fabric is really nice for range of motion like scrambling over boulders or steep pitches requiring a long stride; however, when the fabric gets damp with sweat, it seems to lose its elasticity.

Even tho the waistband was altered, the pants stretched out & slide down. I’ll need to use a belt to keep them in place.

Went hiking on a 5 day trip and I was the only one without a tick on me. Had pants, shirt and socks that had the BugsAway in them on. Lots of briers and no snags or holes in the clothes. No problems with my sensitive skin.

These pants fit a little big which I like for movement. They are light weight, great for summer. There are no secure pockets though so I would suggest those. Love these pants and will probably buy another pair.

I was a bit concerned when I first put on pants. I have the problem where my thighs are always too big to fit the pants. With my one leg, it felt like I might have to return. However, once I fully had the pants on, the waist line was perfect without any tightness.

The thighs are a tad snug. let’s hope this goes well as I trial it around town. I will ost an update.

Straightforward purchase. Seamless, and now they want free labour to further their endeavours. Free advertising without paying for it. This part of the internet is a drag. You have to give your email address to buy anything and then you get emails wanting you to big them up or buy more.

With a shop that you walk into, you just buy something and that’s it, unless there is a problem. The internet, just as it will be when the metaverse comes in, will just make us all look at phones/laptops/tablets/desktops more and more.

Insanity that we are all buying into.

I have been wearing Craghoppers trousers for many years. They are very lightweight and wash easily and then dry in no time. The four hip pockets are fairly deep with one on each side having a zipper fastener.

The right thigh pocket is in fact two pockets; one seals by the use of Velcro and the other has a zip which effectively opens a secure pocket in a way that if seated, the contents won’t fall out. The zipper is at the top, earlier versions being at the bottom (everything fell out).

Also, you can get the thermal winter version which has a thin lining but somehow manages to keep the wind and cold out without being bulky. These trousers will fit anyone from 5’6″ to 6’4″ with no problems.

The waist is part elasticated to allow expansion when eating/drinking. If required the trousers can be waterproofed by washing with an additive or by spraying with an aerosol. If out walking and you get caught in rain, they dry very quickly.

Sometimes a belt is supplied depending on where or from whom you buy then from. Expect to pay up to 50 in some shops and around 25 – 30 on eBay. All in all, I believe that these trousers are a first class product.

Personally, I would like a pocket such as is fitted to the right hand trouser leg also fitted to the left hand side. I do tend to carry quite alot of gear when out walking in addition to the rucksack.

For outdoor walking anywhere, these are great if you think it might rain, or if you just want some fairly lightweight trousers. Jeans get soaked, make you cold, and don’t dry easily. These have a water repellant coating that beads water off in a fairly short shower.

Obviously nothing works after a long time of constant rain. I love the big cargo pocket on the side with a smaller pocket inside that which my house keys can go into. Side pockets and back pockets too.

I have a few pairs of these now and love them.

Quick dry material with enough stretch for women who are curly. I fluctuate in weight so it’s important to me that my clothes not only fit, but that they are comfortable for more that 10 miles of hiking.

This material is quick dry. And breathable yet durable enough for various elevations and rough terrain! I would recommend this pant and brand.

Trousers are excellent quality however I’m a 32″ waist in all other trousers yet these seem quite tight but a 34″ would be way too big

These pants are awesome. After trying numbers of convertibles pants in store, I never found one that fits me good. I bought the North Face Paramount trail convertibles, but I returned them because they didn’t fit well.

These pants have a very nice fit, the material is also very nice. It has some color matching zippers for the bottom of the legs. There is a zipping pocket near the right knees, perfect for preventing pickpockets.

There are a few negative: 1- the material should be a little bit more stretchy. 2- The pockets should all have zippers (my preferences) 3- It should come in other lenghts than 32 (I am 5’8” and need to go do the trousers hems).

I have found that there are no perfect convertibles pants out there, but these one are the best in my own opinion. Overall, I really recommend them and I will probably buy another pair when I break mines.

Who did they make these pants for? People with elephantiasis of the legs? I can literally fit both legs in one side of the pant. These would be the absolute worst pant to hike it since they would act like a tarp on your legs.

I would actually be afraid of tripping on the extra fabric around my legs. if you have MASSIVE legs. these may be for you. I’ll be return thesw right away. terrible pant from a reputable hiking hear company.

I like these pants primarily because they’re light, the lightest convertible pants I found, which makes them a good travel companion. Freedom of movement is however not great and, for that reason, they’ll never be my go to hiking pants.

Note that they also do not have zippers and / or elastic at the bottom of the legs, features I would’ve liked.

I am loving these lightweight pants, especially in the Louisiana summer heat. They are almost perfect, but I have a couple of issues. 1. The elastic at the leg openings is hard to keep out of sight. The retaining loops aren’t in the right place and don’t work for all settings.

This is important as I sometimes wear these to work. I would suggest a corded system like I see on my Kuhl (Renegade Afire) pants that I also love. 2. Like a another reviewer, I’m not crazy about the elastic in the waistband – but that is certainly not a deal-killer.

I just hope it holds up over time. I am very happy to have belt loops as well. Many pants this style just have drawcords which ruin the possibility of wearing to the office. Thanks for making these!.

Handy solution if hard to decide what to wear. Good quality. They could be made with built in belt, but they are not.

I couldn’t easily find the inseam length for convertible pants in the descriptions of those available here on Backcountry. I probably looked at REI too and couldn’t find it. This tells me that the marketing department is not aware of the importance of inseam length.

I am here to inform you these have a 8″ inseam, or are definitely Bermuda style shorts when converted. Bc of the shape of the leg, you cannot roll these Bermudas up to have a pleasant looking short. You don’t want them digging into your thighs when rolled – that is not a good look.

They have the roll up capri option, which is also not a good look and would only be appropriate when wading in ankle high water. I bought these a size too big, worried they’d be sized wrong, but they are not.

Get your regular size – these are roomy and if I keep them I will deal. Would like to find a 5″ inseam convertible pant. Just do not think they exist.

The Quandary Pants are my ALL TIME FAVORITE HIKING PANTS. I have them in every color – and if they had more color options, I’d buy them. They have just the right amount of stretch to ensure that you’re not restricted bending, lunging, or scrambling over rocks.

They are light, which makes them dry out quickly whether you’re washing them in a sink on travel (they’ll be dry by the morning) or sweating through them in the summer (hang them up outside your tent and they’ll also be dry by the AM!).

Not a lot of pockets, but that’s not a problem for me – if I’m hiking without a pack for storage, there is more than enough room for my key fob, bags for the dog, IDs and my cell phone. The fabric does repel water, which makes them a nice option if precipitation is in the forecast.

They have belt loops, which Ive never used, but its a nice feature. The fabric is also virtually indestructible – Ive hiked through brush, thorns, etc. – no pulls or tears in the fabric. I love them so much theyre my go-to weekend pantsgardening, yard work, dog walking, grocery shopping, casual dinners out – and they pack down to virtually nothing, making it very convenient for me to bring them all on hiking trips.

Buy yourself a pair – or two! You wont regret it. And Patagonia – MORE COLORS PLEASE!.

Pants are a very slim cut. But not at all restricting Like my Praana’ convertibles and OR Ferossi, they lack a zipper sown the leg so you have to remove boots to zip off, but I pretty much always hit the trail with them zipped off.

The cargo pocket is an internal pocket just big enough for my iphone 7s. The hip pockets are not as roomy as the Praana’s or REI other zip offs They have an internal draawstring, but no external built in belt.

Maybe the draw string will help them from falling when backpacking, but a built in belt would be nice Fabric a little thinner than Praana. Bout same as OR. Since they are patagonia, I know they are well make.

Before retiring I used my suit coat to carry cellphone, keys, glasses, calendar, etc. Since then I have relied on these Cresta pants, both lined and unlined (have 2 pairs of each) because they have pockets that are the perfect size and placement, particularly for the cellphone.

I wear them for everything from hiking to church – they are that versatile in looks and utility. Way more functional than my old khakis. My only misgiving is size. I cinch my belt at size 33, and have previously ordered that size in these pants.

Seemed a bit big, but on my last order I thought I’d take a chance on 33 again because the catalog showed them running true to size. When my new lined pants came, again biggish. So I ran a tape measure around the waist from snap to snap, and use enough, the measure was 35 inches.

I got the same result when I went back to measure the previous pants. I can fix that by cinching my belt tighter, and the pants don’t look baggy, so I can live with it. But I can’t agree that the advertised size runs true.

I got these lined pants with thin water -repellent outer in olive green in size 35w & 29″L for my husband. He’s 5’10” & 170lbs & these fit PERFECTLY!!! He loves these as it’s so comfortable & practical for daily am walks in country home in NE in Dec -March.

Its perfect esp if there’s light rain or snow. The light outer fabric is water repellent & so comfortable ( bec it’s thin & light unlike other brands that tend to be thick n heavy -too restricting) I got these because you offer hard to find 29″L! Most are 32″ & by the time you pay for hemming lined pants the price goes way over $80! These pants are also great for both outdoor/casual as well as casual:dress occasions.

After machine wash /dry, these come out looking brand new! These are worth every cent!!! Will be purchasing another soon! Thank you, LLBean for offering these great pants in 29L”!.

These are the best! Lined so they’re great for outside on a chilly day. So far, it hasn’t been cold enough to find limits, but temp in the upper teens and lots of wind did not bother them at all. The best thing about these pants are the zippered pockets in the thighs.

Perfect spot for a cell phone, parking a mask, dropping in some reading glasses. Whatever you’re carrying will probably fit. Hey LL Bean, how about some regular pants like this?.

For the life of me, I cannot find a pair of convertible pants as comfortable as these with drawstrings on the legs. Even men’s pants offer few options with drawstring legs. I’ve tried pants with button/roll-up legs, but there’s simply too much fabric for tucking into my hiking boots that it bunches up and puts pressure against my ankle bones, even more painful when the button itself presses into my ankles.

I tried cheaper ones that friends have recommended and they’re too flimsy when I put anything in the pockets, they start tugging down. I wish there were more convertible pants with drawstring legs so I could find a better pair than these.

The first problem upon trying them on was the length. I have a 31″ inseam, so the 29″ inseam justttt fits into the tops of my mid-height hiking boots. But even then, if I bend my legs, the pant legs move and expose my ankles.

If I wear regular shoes or ankle hiking socks, there’s a 1 inch gap of bare skin for bugs to attack or plants to brush or cold air to hit. So I can only wear these with crew length hiking socks or taller inside my mid-height hiking boots.

Which is whatever, I wear those shoes all the time anyway. If you’re like me and store you’re phone in the zippered pocket, there’s 2 problems here. First, walking in cities, it’s the perfect height for a child pickpocket to unzip and snatch.

I have to lean slightly over to grab my phone out. So I put it in a money belt on long-distance public transit and sideways in a hand pocket in cities (I had a guy try to reach in there on public transit once, and because the pockets are skinny and my phone was deep enough and angled, I caught him easily before he could touch my phone).

Having a zip pocket in hands reach would be more ideal. The second problem with the location of the zippered pocket is when you remove the pant legs, you have to find a new location for anything you store in there.

The next problem, also concerning pockets, became apparent a few weeks into wearing: the pockets fell apart. I bought these pants October 2021. I wore them for 3 weeks in Ecuador most everyday. I wore them again for 2 weeks in Africa in January 2022, and noticed a small hole on the corner of one of the hand pockets.

I didn’t think much of it because the hole was small and I don’t store anything than small in that pocket. I then spent 3 weeks in Central America in February 2022 and 1 week in Ecuador again in March 2022.

By this point, the stretchy seams where the hand pockets open were coming undone. I thought, okay I’ll just sew the edges. It won’t look great, but it should hold. Then, in October 2022 I wore them again for a little over a week in US National Parks.

The entire side of one of the back pockets has come completely unattached. I only use that pocket for temporary storage of my phone or sunglasses when I need my hands free quick. I thought okay, guess I’ll have to sew this pocket too.

Then I thought, wait a minute. How long are hiking pants supposed to last? The pockets first started tearing after less than 5 weeks. By week 10, I had sewn the corner of 1 front pocket and the stretchy openings on both front pockets, and the back pocket was now unusable.

Not to mention, somewhere around week 5, I noticed fraying around the waist button. Not sure if it’s thread or the fabric bit looped through the button, but it makes me worried that button will fall off soon.

The loop thingy at the waist is also thinning, but that can be because I’d hook my 1L water bottle to it, and I don’t think it’s made for that much weight. I really don’t think I overuse the pockets! I use the zipper pocket the most, and that’s the only one that seems fine so far.

I’m planning a 6+ month trip to Latin America next month, so hopefully I can find a better pair of convertible pants with drawstring legs, and a longer inseam than these. If not, I’ll probably settle for sewing the rest of the ones I have and buying these in a different color.

Hopefully if I end up settling for these again, they’ll survive more than 10 weeks into my travels. Maybe there will be better options in Latin America.

I’ve purchased a number of pairs of this pant model over the years. Now there are no side zips that run length (previously called “no sit zips”), you’ve taken away belt loops AND the flexible gusseted external pockets on the legs (where I’m accustomed to storing all sorts of things that can’t be accommodated by the current “hidden” pocket)? What else? The “watch pocket” chamber inside the main pockets? So frustrating.

Now I’ll have to make my current pair limp along and hope I don’t get a big gash on them from one of the sharp rocks on the Superior Hiking Trail, which I visit at least 2-3 times per summer. I’m well aware that all of the above features added to the cost of the pants.

How about a less expensive version and a premium version for the many buyers out there who are going to come to this page (and the men’s, as my husband also wears them) and be totally disappointed. I have looked at many other convertible pants – this model is something that set REI apart and you could be proud of.

I’m obsessed. I’ve always been jealous of my husbands convertible pants when we go backpacking or any long hikes that start before dawn and get hot in the afternoon. Many women’s convertible pants have shorts that are so long they’re practically capris – these are actually a good short-ish short length! Also, many womens hiking pants are enormous around the waist or very “straight-shaped” – which is confusing to me since presumably you might have some women hikers that are pear or hourglass shaped.

These pants are superb if you have a smaller waist and thicker butt/thighs. These give you coverage but are fairly lightweight, so will be great for backpacking. These land right at my natural waist which is perfect.

My only complaint is that with jogger style, the opening is not big enough to fit over typical hiking boots so you have to remove your boots to remove the pants portion (if only there was a slit at the bottom that could expand to fit over boots – next gen hopefully!).
