20 Best Hiking Shoes For Toddlers (2023 Updated)

We love these shoes! They have become the everyday favorite for my 2. 5 (almost 3) year old. She wears them to daycare, and they are perfect for all-day wear in the fall/winter months. They have good traction for walking & hiking on dirt trails, and the slightly higher ankle keeps out the dust and rocks.

These do seem pretty wide and large for the size. This may be intentional since the barefoot style allows for flexibility and for the toes to spread out. I love this, especially for shoes she wears all day at school.

They are lightweight, very easy on/off and the retro styling is adorable. These are absolutely worth the investment! We will likely get a full year of wear out of them.

These shoes were awesome for our trip hiking the Red Rocks in Sedona. I appreciated that they came in little girl and big girl sizes so my girls could match outfits and provided more substantial ankle support.

They do run wider than regular M sized Merrells but this worked out well with our thicker Smartwool hiking socks so the footwear was super comfortable. I even bought the next size up for each for the future.

The bottoms do not grip as well as other Merrell Trail Ridge Jr sneakers we bought with deeper grooves on the bottom, so I would just watch your kids a little more closely on slippery rocks and in icy conditions.

In any case, these make great everyday shoes. My kids loved them too and preferred them over their other Merrell Trail Ridge Jr. sneakers.

This is the second year I’ve bought these and I will keep buying each year. They are the only shoes that work for his wide feet. The sole is sturdy and flexible – perfect for climbing and exploring. The only downside is the Velcro.

It stopped working after less than 3 months of wear but I filled out the form and Merrell sent us a new pair! With a company that stands by their product like that, I am a loyal customer. I do think it’s important to note that this shoe protects his feet from getting wet while walking briefly in the rain but is not actually waterproof.

Stepping in a puddle will yield a wet foot.

I got a pair of these for my toddler grandson about 8 mos ago not knowing his father had a pair of Merrell’s also. My daughter and her husband want to make sure he is wearing a good fitting shoe. My son in law is very pleased with his Merrell’s and has observed that his toddler walks better in this pair than other shoes he has.

I bought him another pair, different color to wear, as he has almost outgrown his first pair. This is a very sturdy, nice fitting shoe of very good quality. I like these as much or more as as Stride Rite shoes that I also buy for our 4 toddler grandchildren.

I just keep buying these in different sizes for each of my boys. They rock. They are so durable. No other shoe can withstand our playground at our preschool and daycare with mulch and rocks and dirt and just the activity level of my boys.

These go an entire season before I must retire them. They are waterproof for puddle splashing and grippy for climbing and walking on unsteady surfaces like rock trails and dirt. Until I found these, I was purchasing tennis shoes way too often.

The size is just right and they are easy for my sons to get on and off. My boys are 2 and 3. 5 yrs old. I know this is a major ask, but I would love to see a light up sole version and more consistently a red color option.

That’s the only thing that would make these shoes better at least in my boys eyes! Thank you.

I bought these for my grandson in need of a new pair of sneakers. I found that they seem to run a little smaller than the shoes I had bought here as well as his Nike sneakers, so I had to return for a larger size.

But with the correct size for his foot he loves them and wears all day long. His only other concern with these is my 3 year old grandson likes to dress himself and these sneakers are a little tougher for him to get on.

The velcro closure gets stuck in the eyelet limiting the opening width. More importantly he says his feet are very soft.

My son loves these shoes as his go anywhere, do anything option. They’re sturdy, fit well, manage the muck and are reasonably easy to get on by himself. My only issue is the draw-cord. It’s pretty long and, I don’t know about your kids, buy mine reef on those things when they put their shoes on.

It’s stretched out even more, so instead of just reaching the toe, it goes beyond and needs a trim. They could probably halve the length and be just fine without that hassle. Otherwise, no issues!.

My son wears day hikers to school in the fall and spring. These hikers are waterproof, whereas his Merrell’s were not. They are comfortable and easy to put on. They do not have toggles, so I bought toggles.

It makes tightening them a lot easier. The only thing I have to figure out it what to do with the longer laces. I could cut them and singe them. It’s worth it though as they are sturdy and comfortable.

I bought these in the next size up for my son, he has wide feet. I’m glad I went a size up as they are snug in the width and not as easy to get on as other kids’ styles from Columbia. They fit good after they are on.

The elastic adjuster works well to tighten the shoe but when he outgrows these I may purchase the velcro style like my daughter has because you can open that style up more to get on easier, we’ll see how these break in as they are getting easier to get on with wear time.

Other than the snug issue putting the shoes on they are a great product. My son has way better traction from the omni grip sole and he can stomp through puddles without getting his socks soaked. He can move on the trails a lot easier and he’s not slipping all over anymore.

I notice he’s moving a lot easier on rugged ground with these shoes. I do like the elastic adjusters so the only thing I would change about these shoes is maybe be able to open them more or be able to pull the tongue down more so they are easier to put on.

This is definitely not a deal breaker because my son loves them. They are overall great shoe if you take your kids hiking and trail walking with you.

I was concerned when I opened the package as the box was quite smashed and didn’t even have a lid. I really was expecting a pair of boots that had been worn and returned. Thankfully, the soles were unskuffed and the boots looked unworn.

Unfortunately, I purchased them as a birthday gift and had to get about wrapping as there was no box to wrap. Had these been a clearance item, that might have been expected, but they weren’t and as the bruck and mortar store doesn’t carry youth hikers, I expected a better presentation.

It seems the boots have decent arch support and are stylish. My scout needed a solid hiker as his last hiking/camping weekend trashed his old pair. These seem to be well made and he likes the look of them.

Only time and miles will determine how well they do.

I bought this for my daughters to use for spring and summer hikes, but they already started wearing them to school. The bottom provides great traction on ice and snow! (Just not for playing the snow- parts of the sneaker are breathable mesh).

My girls loved the vibrant color as well. Fits true to size.

Great traction, but materials are not leather like adult Merrell shoes. For the price, these are a good value for hiking. Regular tennis shoes/running shoes will not provide enough traction for Rocky terrains or enough grips for microspikes to not come off.

Edit 7/29/2022I’m finally starting to wear down the tread on the boots after extensive use in hiking, music festivals, and working construction because they’re more comfortable than my work boots. But the boots themselves have kept together perfectly.

Gotten plenty of use for the 100 bucks and kept me comfortable every step. Bought these because I love to hike, but never invested in boots for it, but also because I was going t attend a music festival in the WV mountains in some rough terrain.

I wore these on two water filled hikes to break them in and after that period they were beyond comfortable. Especially on the soles of my feet. I thought anti fatigue was a marketing term, but boy was I wrong.

Didn’t take the boots off at the festival except to sleep, and wore them during all my flights to and from the festival. I’ve only had these less than a month but I’ve put them through some real tests on hills, rock, water, and regular walking.

I’m going to continue to buy these for as long as they’re around 100 bucks!.

Used for hiking. Super comfortable. No break-in required for me. Sized same as my running shoe and they fit perfectly with a bit of extra room in toe (as hiking boots should have). I used a coupon so I think I got great bang for buck hiking boot.

From my one experience in mud, they are waterproof. My only complaint is that the material (I got brown) scuffs/gets dirty quickly but cleaned quite well with a wet rag. If you like to keep your boots pristine looking for as long as possible, maybe go a different way.

But if you want a comfortable and affordable hiking boot and are willing to clean them, I’d definitely recommend these. They seemed to have good grip on my one hike experience going downhill on rocks but not sure how they’d do on ice.

These boots are made for walking as the song goes, but they’re also great for running, climbing, and jumping. Rugged, sturdy, and well designed, Carter’s combines the ease of Velcro and the practicality of solid traction.

Bought these for a Christmas present for my son and we went out for a mile and a half walk to break them in. Because they are boots and not the sneakers he’s used to, there was a little learning curve to get used to the weight (he clomped a bit the first part of the walk), but they fit great, he didn’t trip, and he didn’t complain about any issues after we finished our long walk.

The zips make it really easy to get on and off and he loves that these are his first pair of lace-up footwear.

My grandson loves his new boots! Great fit, sturdy construction, but most importantly, a zipper fir easy on/easy off just like Papa’s boots! According to KY grandson, they run really fast, and you can do chores in them!.

These are the perfect boot for any little kiddo that likes outdoor adventures. They are lightweight, flexible, comfy and durable. I do have to help my son put them on as the laces are elastic, but I like that feature, no retying shoes.

Sizing seems just right. My son’s size 8s were getting snug putting them on, ordered a 9 in these, they fit nicely with a little toe room for growth.

My 5 year old love boots and these are now his favorite. I like how they’re just tug on and go. Makes it much easier for him to get his shoes on “by himself” like he likes to do. They fit perfectly, and go with all the cute fall and winter outfits.

I bought these for our twin boys for the winter and they are really adorable . Look so cute on! They seem warm and comfortable. They will be helpful this winter and spring!

I got these boots to hike the Pemi-loop (30+ miles) and have always heard great things about Merrill and their quality. The first day of the hike, there was an extended downpour and it didn’t take long for my boots to audibly “slosh” with every step.

They took forever to dry out as we were backpacking. The more disappointing issue had to do with blisters. I wore these boots for hikes/workouts at least a month prior to my backpacking trip and they seemed comfortable (although a bit hot) and my toes seemed happy.

After the first day of rain, however, I developed severe and identical blisters on the arch of my foot near the heel – where the insoles hit. The blistering became so severe, I had to take the insoles out entirely.

This seemed to stop my blisters from getting too much worse. I now plan to replace the original insoles with store-bought ones to see if it helps. Cons: blisters everywhere slightly water-resistant versus waterproof boots make feet feel very hot while hiking Pro: Wonderfully grippy outsole- even in the rain! They helped me stick like a toad to slick and dry surfaces (as long as I kept the boots perpendicular to the surface).

I bought these in the last minute for a trip to the Peruvian Andes, when I realized my beloved Ahnu boots were not fully intact and no longer made. When I first put on the Moabs on I was concerned since they are supposed to be super-comfortable, and I didn’t find them so.

I pulled out the insoles and replaced them with a 6-year old pair of SOLES and voila! Much better. The insoles provided are inadequate in every way – no support, not durable, went straight in the trash.

With decent insoles I found these boots very comfortable, even with my weird feet (I have flat feet and something called Haglund’s deformity, a bony projection on the back of my heels) and they weathered a strenuous and frequently wet hiking trip admirably.

My only other quibbles are that they are a bit bulky, and they trap odors much more than I’m used to – will have to figure out a solution. Otherwise very satisfied with the value and the performance.

I wear a women’s 8 in street shoes and purchased the 9s, my usual size in hiking boots, and they fit very well with room for warm socks. I expect to wear these for a while.

I bought these boots because I love Timbs, they’re waterproof and look very slick. They look great! The only con is I bought my normal size they were very snug on the sides. I have wide feet. No way could I wear a thick pair of socks and put these on.

Had to exchange for 1/2 size up.

We have bought this model almost every year for the last 4-5 years. Our kids use it as their outside shoes at school during the wet and colder months. Great for when big snowshoes are not necessary but running shoes aren’t enough anymore.

They use them in the summer, fall and spring for hikes. It’s a great go to when the weather is uncertain. Behave like running shoes but keep you dry and steady like hiking boots.

Overall very solid shoes. Excellent quality build. However, I find it heavier and bulkier than I would normally expect from a kids hiker. Also for the price, I was expecting the materials to be more “premium”.

But with this (mostly synthetic) upper and a strong “new rubber boots” smell it looks a feels almost walmart-ish. Having said all that, my son totally approves of this purchase and they look sturdy enough to provide foot support and last for the next year or two without being prematurely destroyed! I did run small, so we had to order a half-size up replacement.

Bought these boots for my daughter and she loves them. They fit very well and keep her feet dry, hiking through wet leaves. The boots have a good grip and are comfortable (as per my daughter). the only downside is that they do need some time to be broken in, even for light hikes.

Giving 4 stars, because of the length of time. We have not used them enough yet to give a full 5-star rating.

These were fine for my 11-12 yr olds 2-3 day backcountry trips with me in terms of rugged soles and decent uppers on dry terrain but he got total soakers on stream crossings where the water level exceeded the lower part of tongue.

I know all boots leak a little through the tongue gusset but these performed exceptionally poorly. One stream crossing early on and he had to deal with sopping socks for the next 8 hours. We kept switching out back and forth with his one extra pair of socks while we tried to dry the other pair outside my pack but the boot liners I guess hold too much water and kept on re-soaking the switched socks.

You’ll need to stick to the dry if these are going to work out for you. Also the lacing bungee wear out very quickly at the top eyelets.

My son has to wear orthotics and these shoes are super great for that. They are flexible for hiking, wide enough for the orthotics, and strong enough for a Boy Scout going hiking, cycling, and camping on the regular.

However, they are not as waterproof as they claim to be. I will be waterproofing them ASAP. It is a good thing the Boy Scouts are taught to bring extra socks, and to wear thick wool socks. They are water repellent, but not waterproof.

Oh and my son loves the no-tie-quick laces.

My son never liked Keen shoes in the past, but we wanted to try it again. We wanted to buy his next size up so we had the shoe in our possession, however his typical brand is no where to be found. So we tried this specific shoe (I love Keen shoes myself).

To my surprise, he said he loved it. He liked how comfy it is and how there is air flow into the shoe from the top of the shoe. It does run big, which he wanted for next year, but he will grow into it.

If he is happy, then I am happy and Keen is always a brand that I would trust.

Brilliant. Bought for holiday in Devon and we crossed over into Cornwall. Went on lots of walks with uneven ground sand steep slopes. Great fit, brilliant grip. Felt safe and comfortable. Walked through a stream to get to a waterfall and they are definitely waterproof.

Look good on and we’re comfy straight away. No rubbing or blisters!.

I purchased these to replace an old pair of Regatta walking shoes that were worn out. As I was very happy with the fit and quality of Regatta, and being unable to get to shoe shops due to lockdown, I decided to stick with the same make.

I am not disappointed. Sometimes a size 5 can be a little tight depending upon make and style. These fit me perfect as expected in size 5. They are very well padded and appear to be up to the usual very good quality.

I am delighted with the colour, not black but dark navy blue so enough to hide all the muck and scuffs they will get on them. Excellent price and service from Charlies too.

I bought these for my son, he’s 14 and liked the look of them online. I’m pleased to say he was also happy with the fit and they are excellent quality for the price. I’m not an expert and we don’t go hiking all day or anything but these are decent walking boots for his outdoor adventures, (climbing, kayaking, walking in the woods, getting muddy etc.

) I didn’t want to pay the earth for something he will grow out of soon. I would recommend them.

I bought these shoes for my 6 year old at the end of March 2022. It is now beginning of June 2022 and the seams are popped and there are holes in the sides. Really disappointed in the quality of these shoes, I justify paying more for a “better” shoe in hopes they will last through at least one of my boys, but usually the next.

Wouldn’t recommend.

I ordered multiple sizes of these shoes and they are great. Fit true to size and excellent quality. They lasted a long time without any problems. But they are a little heavier than regular sneakers.

These are great for my 8 year old daughter. We hike often and she loves climbing on boulders. It was challenging finding a pair of lightweight hiking shoes with good treads for a reasonable price. These shoes are perfect.

After searching far and wide for these Velcro boots I was really disappointed when they turned up as lace ups not Velcro. I paid £10 more from Very than I could have paid elsewhere. Very needs to change its picture for this item.

We love the Cotswold boots, have had the Velcro ones previously, daughter is learning how to tie laces now.

Good fit. Sturdy. Definitely waterproof, and kept feet nice and warm on trips outdoors!

I just want to say, I never write reviews. I think this might be my first on a product ever. My son has cerebral palsy and has worn an AFO on his left leg since he was about 4 years old. Finding shoes to fit such a wide and cumbersome addition to his foot was nearly impossible.

We would spend HOURS trying on shoes, only to try to squeeze on a pair of crocs in desperation over his orthotic. One day while out searching we happened upon a pair of Keen Chandler CNX (at that time, the little kids version), and miracle of miracle, it fit!!! Since then, for the past 6 years, we have ONLY bought Keen Chandler CNX for our son.

The soles withstand his uneven walking, the ridiculous wear and tear from his AFO, and the general craziness of a 10 year old boy. Not only that, but this company has been SO GOOD to people with disabilities who require two different sized pairs of shoes.

I honestly cannot sing their praises enough and tell every parent of kids with orthotics that they need to buy Keen shoes. WE LOVE THIS COMPANY!!.

I bought them for our two year olds and our four year old and they’re exactly what I was looking for. Light, flexible, good support, reinforced toe and grippy. They’re also really easy to get on and off and dry quickly.

The kids like wearing them, and they use them for trails, biking, playgrounds and everything else kids do outside. I’ll be ordering these over and over again as the kids’ feet grow. No need to look for any other sneaker.

I’ve been a Keen fan for many years. Bought this shoe for my 7 year old son. It lasted less than 2 months before falling apart. While the sole held up, the fabric section on the outside and inner section began to rip.

In addition, the toggle that held the lace broke, hence the lace snapped. The warranty does not replace laces. The issue isn’t the laces which are replaceable, but more that this shoe did not last more than 2 months.

My kid is active, but he really just wore these to school, not on the trails. Thought they would have lasted at least 3 months! Disappointed to learn that Keen won’t replace because they claim it’s a “lace issue”.

Expensive shoe for only 2 months use!.

In addition to summer hiking, we like to use these boots as spring or fall footwear for general outdoor playing. My 4 year old twins cannot tie shoes, so this means A LOT of shoe tying for mom every time they are in and out of the house! Other than that, we love the boots.

The kids have found them comfortable for hiking, riding bikes, playing at the park. I bought a size up in fall and they wore thick socks. Now in spring they are wearing medium weight socks and they still fit.

Their feet measure 17 cm and they are currently happy in size 12.

It’s rare that I buy something for my kids and then buy the exact same product again as they grow, but these boots area that good. I have two active little boys, and despite two solid years of use, both boys’ boots still look nearly as good as new.

Little brother is about to move into big brother’s boots, and I will definitely buy big brother another pair. They are durable (tough enough to withstand many cold Montana hikes), comfortable, and the sole seems indestructible.

My son was never a fan of shoes, crazy toddler, until we got him these hiking boots. He absolutely loves them and loves that he can walk through puddles with them. They are small and low, so the waterproofing only goes so far.

There have been times when the water goes over the top of the boot. The sole is bulletproof and rugged. These shoes are great if you can afford $60 toddler boots; we are fortunate. I was asked to speak to the size of these shoes and be honest, who knows.

they fit, and my son loves them. I can only assume they are true to size and wide enough. It would be great if LL Bean had a worn wear program since these shoes will surely be in great shape for the next 2-3 toddlers.
