20 Best Hiking Shoes For Dogs (2023 Updated)

This is a great product! Incredibly sturdy – these are very well made booties. This is Gunther’s first winter. We decided to get him boots because we live in a more urban area and he would need to walk across all sorts of deicer throughout the winter.

We also went through the first snow of the season without boots for him, and he did not like the cold on his feet. He kept alternating lifting his paws out of the snow because they were getting cold! Let me start by saying that we use the boots along with the recommended socks.

The socks helped with two aspects: comfort for Gunther (my shoes rub when I don’t wear socks – why would I want that for him?), and to make it SO much easier to pull the boots up over nails/dewclaws.

We followed all instructions online for measuring our dog’s feet. We purchased the boots that fit the measurements we took, and they are the perfect size. Gunther tolerates them well. He doesn’t love them, but he will wear them without a problem.

There is definitely a learning curve when it comes to putting the boots on. We were careful to make sure that we didn’t pull the boots up so high that it would put pressure on his nails. but then we were leaving the boot too low and it would slide off in the snow.

After a few rounds of putting the boots on, we finally got into a groove. It still takes two of us – it is too difficult to hold up his leg, keep the sock on, and wiggle his foot into the boot with just one person (this would be true of any boots, not just these!).

If you have a more relaxed dog, you should be able to do it with just one person. Overall, I highly recommend these boots! They have made winter more tolerable for Gunther and his humans.

I bought these boots for my dog because we’re generally big fans of Ruffwear gear, and I was interested in the gaiter. We had Muttluks Snow Mushers for our previous dog, and while they were easy to get on, snow collected in the cuff and melted down into the boots.

These take longer to get on than average dog boots, because you have to velcro them then zip up the gaiter. The velcro band is VERY stiff- this is definitely something that could be improved. I’d like to see an elastic velcro band instead to make it more comfortable.

We ended up buying the socks because I was concerned that the stiffness would cause rubbing. Our dog has short fur and fairly skinny ankles compared to her paws. Unfortunately, in snow deeper than a couple inches, the gaiters completely fill up with snow and I have to unzip them to dig out all the snow periodically.

I would improve this design by making the gaiters higher, and adding a velcro cinch or two to customize the fit. I still think they’re good boots, and if your dog has thicker fur or ankles that are relatively close in size to their paws, they will probably be perfect.

Here’s hoping that Ruffwear improves the design for next year!.

We love these boots — very well-made, and they seem comfortable. We got them for summer when his Summit Trex are too warm. My only complaint is that the ankles are pretty big, so we have to cinch them up past the tag on the strap (overlapping the mesh edges) to get them to stay on.

My dog has thin ankles, but it would be nice to make the gusset slightly wider so the sides don’t overlap so much. To be fair, this is our second pair of RW boots with this issue, so it’s obviously not major.

Also, my dog wears a 2. 0 on his back feet, and a 2. 25 on the front. the 2. 25’s are noticeably taller, and only just fit under his dew claw pad on the back of his leg. They rub slightly while breaking in, but that’s typical of high-quality boots, and we just use the socks or some vet wrap to prevent rubbing on his dew claws.

They’re great for hikes, service work, and wam weather in general! LOVE the reflective tape — it makes it much easier to make sure they’re all still on and track down one if it’s lost. Wish all RW boots had this!.

We purchased one pair of the dog boots to help our old dog who is slipping all over the place wth our hard floors. It was our vet’s suggestion to do something to help him with better grip on the floor.

Friends of ours had some Ruffwear boots for their dog, for the same reason, and recommended them. Ordering was easy. The boots are well made, good quality, solid material, the rubber is nice and grippy.

The velcro straps make it nice and secure. The hardest part was working out the correct size. The ones our friends lent us were too big for our dog, and kept turning around on his dog’s feet. We ended up ordering for the smallest size, I am unsure if it is a good fit or should have gone one size up.

To our surprise, our dog has not tried to get the boots off at all, suggesting they are not bothering him. He is still getting used to them, as he needs to adjust his gait (due to his age, he drags his paws, which is fine with fur, not so good with rubber, so he needs to learn to lift his paws up).

As a result he is tripping over a bit, I am hoping that it will improve as he gets used to them. Very happy with the product, whether it works with our dog remains to be seen.

I recently wrote to the company because I just bought a pair of these for my doodle. After about 5-6 times using them, the fabric has started to rip apart and it wasn’t even rough terrain. Maybe I have a defective pair, I’m not sure.

In addition, if your dog has dew claws, you will have to buy carbon to wrap around the leg and then put the boots on, even if you buy the socks. I would recommend future models be made higher, this will keep out more dirt and less risk of cutting the dew claws.

My dogs were bleeding after the walk. Also, the velcro comes undone a lot. I had to constantly stop and re-do the velcro, which is a bit of a bummer. Maybe the boots need two straps, or a string, or a zipper, I’m not entirely sure.

The sole of the boot looks great and my dog does not mind wearing them after a minute or so. I’m thinking to trade them for the upgrade style and see if these last longer. I love Ruffwear and we have so many of their products, I’m not willing to give up just yet.

This is a great company based in Oregon and I would prefer to support them, but the first go round did not work out. I look forward to talking to someone at the company and possibly getting a different replacement – see how that goes! Thanks for providing awesome products for the pups!.

these worked great for my Standard Schnauzer, they have a great fit and she has had zero issues with them. I have nothing but praise for the quality and usability of this product for her however, for my 12lb Chi mix, it is a much more hit and miss experience.

the problem is that they just aren’t quite small enough. I’ve examined them closely, and it’s obvious that the materials, especially the sole, are just too hefty to make in a very small size. but a very small dog could get more than adequate protection with a thinner sole and less heavy-duty fabric and velcro.

but from a manufacturing standpoint, I can absolutely see that it would be really costly to have to make a line of tiny-dog shoes using different materials. however, I also see small dogs hiking out on our normal routes (which are typically loops or out-n-backs of 4-7 miles) so I KNOW there are a lot of small dog owner like me looking for a genuine hiking shoe for tiny feet! so, we use the smallest shoe you guys make only on really rough ground, and I just keep a close eye on her so that when one comes off I can retrieve it.

I just wish they came another size or 2 smaller, and had a lighter velcro around the top, for a better fit.

I ordered these in the wrong (bigger) size the first time, so i don’t think my dogs pairs are too small, but they eventually made him bleed. I did watch for the first couple of short walks for signs of wearing or chafing, but didn’t see any.

On a longer walk (25 minutes, maybe) he didn’t seem uncomfortable but when I took the shoes off, all 4 of his paws were bleeding on the top center of his paws (kind of like below your center knuckle on a human hand).

Really weird place to wear so i’m not sure if these just aren’t broken in enough or if they don’t fit him properly. We did wear these with socks each time. I think it may be a bit too late for me to exchange to another size (but the other size seemed HUGE so maybe better close up videos of how we should expect these to fit would also be helpful) but I won’t be wearing these unless we have an incredibly frigid -40 degree day in Chicago.

Burglar lives in snowy Vermont. Burglar is a sweet older dog who does not like water of any sort–not rain or snow or sprinklers or. baths. I conspired with Burglar’s owner to get the right size boots for him so he could avoid stepping in the snow.

I read reviews and settled on Kurgo. The first ones I ordered for him from Chewy, red to match his red coat, were too small. Chewy refunded my money and suggested donating the boots to another dog. By serendipity, a friend had a smaller dog who needed boots.

The medium size boots I next ordered fit Burglar and reports are that he got used to them really quickly. I received a video of him in his red coat and boots that is really cute. Thank you Kurgo and thank you Chewy.

These boots did not work well for our dog. She is a very timid rescue dog. She is probably 10 years old and getting her used to wearing boots just isn’t going well. We hoped that she could wear them when we hike but she trips on them.

I am going to keep trying because her paw was injured on a hike which caused a Cutaneous horn to grow on her paw pad. The vet bill to have it removed was horrendous and the recovery time has been very long.

I would like to have this never happen again. Unfortunately, she is miserable when she is wearing the boots and doesn’t seem to enjoy her walks. I would recommend these boots for a dog who doesn’t have all the emotional baggage our girl brought with her.

She doesn’t trust us completely and seems to think that anything new is another method of torture.

I have been looking in many pet stores over the past year for dog boots with leather bottoms but haven’t been able to find them. A friend suggested I try BaxterBoo because that’s where she got hers. Finally, something that would keep my dogs’ feet dry, warm and protected from salt on the sidewalks in the cold Minnesota winters.

Also, having leather bottoms on them makes them more durable. I had tried another type of boot but they froze up in the cold. My two Jack Russell Terriers are set for winter with the boots and the Fido Fleece coats I also bought from Baxter Boo!.

Had these before and never came off very active border collie. Hill walking beach walk-in swimming. Fit well and never rubbed feet allowed us to go on rough stony walks agai n and fully protected his pads.

Bit fiddly to put on and must fit straps tight.

They are well designed , someone actually thought about their purpose and the anatomy of dogs feet. They stay on unlike some other very similar brands. My dog doesnt mind them but due to his week back legs and feet dragging they trip him up.

Why dont they come in a 4 pack? Id definitely recommend them and just spend out in the first place. I must have spent about 90 on various other inferior products only for them to fall off continually or develop holes before we had gone 150 yards.

I would highly recommend these. The shoes stay on, no matter how much your dog runs about. Excellent product to help with healing of any injuries on your dogs paws. They are really strong and wear well on any terrain.

And the great thing is they seem to last forever! Tip: buy two sizes. The correct size for when paw is nearly better and a larger size for when the paw still requires bandaging.

I bought this for my two dogs after one of my dog’s paw pad got seriously punctured by random tiny tree branches during our walk. Each shoe has 2 lights, green and red lights. They wore these couple times off and on for 10 days during the 30 minute night walks only (excluding rainy days).

The lights on these shoes went dead already. There is no way to replace the batteries so I guess this is it. As for the quality of the shoes themselves, they are sturdy for sure. But I am afraid they are too sturdy to the point that they are too stiff for my dogs’ ankles and feet.

They ended up having blisters on their toes. I measured their paws to see if I have bought the wrong sizes (I bought S and XS). I also put their feet on the measuring picture that was attached to the box.

I did buy the right sizes for them. So this isn’t caused by the wrong size. It is hard to slide their feet into these shoes. The rubber strap on the top of the shoes are strong and it is difficult to make a good opening to grab unwilling dogs’ foot into them (I have to do this for 8 times.

). They aren’t waterproof. The top of the shoes are made of multiple layers of mesh material (I guesd to let their feet breathe). This is why I did not use these shoes during rainy nights. Inside of the shoes are just thin layer of cloth which was irritating for my dogs’ toes when they rub against it.

I wish it was made of soft and padded material so they are less irritable for my dogs’ feet. These shoes are good quality (strong rubber soles) but for the price, the light should last longer than 10 days and batteries should be replaceable or rechargeable.

I bought these because of the lights for the night walks and really disappointed to see them die so quickly. These shoes are good quality but too stiff for my dogs’ feet and caused blisters on their toes.

I rather buy cheaper ones and buy them multiple times when they break. Those are more flexible and are more comfortable for my dogs.

My dog has worn shoes before for hiking and I was looking to replace them because the soles were fairly worn. When he started having some redness and soreness on a couple of his paws which I have largely attribute to a lawn treatment used at my apartment complex, I started looking for something he could wear on daily walks.

My significant other is all about visibility at night so I knew he’d live the strobing. I wasn’t positive if my dog would love them as much. We are hit or miss with shoes on him, some have worked out while others were returned.

Overall these seem to be okay. One of the four shoes didn’t strobe upon receipt which I read others had experienced, but the other three strobe sufficiently for visibility which is good enough and wasn’t a deal breaker for me (though for the price ideally all would work).

They do run big. I watched a YouTube video review that discussed sizing and based on that review I almost went with a small. I ended up deciding on medium though. My dogs paw width is 3″ which the size chart says is a large.

Medium seems to work. It might be a bit big, but they definitely aren’t falling off and my dog seems to walk in them okay so I’d prefer some room over his feet being too squished. I’m not 100% sure my dog likes them all that much.

He seems utterly dejected every time I take them out to put them on him and often stands across the room staring at me until he finally comes over head low. I’m not sure if this is because he just doesn’t like wearing shoes in general, as I said before he only wore them on hikes, or if there is a discomfort issue going on.

He doesn’t seem in pain when we walk but we’re keeping an eye on it for a few more weeks to see. Ultimately these are intended to protect his paws from whatever has been irrating them so I don’t want to replace one irritation with another.

so far though, they have worked out better than three other shoes we’ve tried that were returned. They stay on well even, on the first day of them when he was doing the funky leg flailing business. We’ve had them for about three weeks now soni cannot speak to longevity of the sole or strobe batteries.

I can say that he wears them for a 30 min walk every day and an hour on weekends and we haven’t noticed abnormal wearing of the soles that I think other reviews noted. We walk on a mixture of pavement, street, rocks and grass each day.

Finally someone was using their cranium when they designed these. I have a mixed breed Pit/Boxer/Great Dane and he won’t go on a walk without them. Took him 10 – 15 minutes to get adjusted to having something to cover his paws.

Once he found out that he can climb up trees to catch kitty cats much easier! I would have given a 98% worth of ‘Rating Stars’ but for some odd reason the manufacturer’s designers decided to place the threaded Velcro straps that are NOT with ONE LARGE strip but sowed 2 strips together which have to pass through the plastic wrap around and over time (quickly in my case due to the high amount of walking we do) will need to be replaced quicker than need be.

But on the bright side. Chewy has replaced them and even offered to switch to another manufacturer with price matching (has to be a certain % of the sale, obviously) and they honored that 2x. Bye Bye PetS******, Chewy is 10x better quality, service, choices and the shipping/return process is as easy as pie.

We have two shelties and take them for walks twice a day. In the winter we like to use booties to keep ice/snow from matting in-between their hairy toes. These are awesome! They stay on, aren’t too slippery, and, while not entirely waterproof keep a lot of the junk off their feet (and out of our home).

We are here to purchase our third set in five years which is better longevity than many of the more expensive booties! If you’re thinking about it, get them!.

This is the perfect soft, flexible boot for my 14 lb. miniature poodle. It keeps her feet warm in winter on walks. If I add socks it keeps her feet warm even when zero degrees outside. I want her paws protected from the chemicals used on sidewalks, streets and parking lots.

However, these are not for cold slushy conditions as they are not waterproof.

These are perfect for the cold weather if it is not slushy. Keep my Kaya’s paws from getting too cold when out on walks. And they are soft and flexible and she got used to them very quickly. Unfortunately they do not work for the slushy, cold weather in the midwest – they do not keep the water out.

We will see how they do for hot sidewalks in the summer.

These boots are beautifully made and I am sure will help alot of dogs for various reasons above and beyond being made for hot pavement. The hot pink color is gorgeous! I believe I ordered too big of a size though and when I went to see if there was a size 1 available they were sold out in the pink unfortunately.

I even went to the extent of trying to make them smaller by stitching a seem up the front of them but my pup kept tripping in them probably because of the rubber soles. I wanted them for walking on grass where there are sticky pine cones which always get stuck in her fur and cause her paws extreme discomfort.

I had previously purchased size 2 boots for winter which worked really well so I really thought she would again be size 2. In my own opinion I believe they fit large. I am really disappointed but I know many customers are happy with them as are their pets.

These boots are for hot pavement. I have only had them a month, but the toe box was big enough to put my big basset hound’s paws in them very easily. The velcro strap was snug enough to keep the boots on.

The draw cord at the top helped keep the boots up. These are very tall boots. The toe box is made of lightweight, flexible enough material to be able to slip my dog’s paws into the footbox easily. He walked fine in them and did not even seem to notice he had them on.

He even ran a little bit in them and they didn’t come off. Since the soul is so lightweight, I wonder how durable the booties will be over time. Time will tell, I have only had them one month but am happy witih them so far.

My 18 lb cockapoo wears a size 3 perfectly. Like the soft shields, my dog loves these summer booties. They stay on comfortably for long walks and when playing fetch on pavement. It protects his paws from abrasion, pesticide and broken glass on city walks.

The colours are beautiful. The only problem is that the upper tie, can be tricky to tighten. The upper tie clasp works better on the soft shield (winter) booties than the hot pavement (summer) booties.

It’s pricy, but they are the only boots my dog will wear.

The velcro wasn’t able to hold up completely. My dog was romping through an inch or so of snow. As the snow made its way into the velcro creases, the velcro started to detach from itself. One of the shoes seemed extremely uncomfortable for my dog.

The shoe had a tendency to come off if loosened but made her move with a limp when tightened such that the shoe wouldn’t come off. I wouldn’t recommend the product for long trips outside in shallow snow, but they would be fine for quick walks outside.

Based on the discomfort she experienced with the one shoe, I’m not sure I’d recommend the shoes at all.

For a smaller dog, these would be perfect. For our larger furry friends, the nails, though groomed, came through the toes very quickly and these boots were trashed in a couple of days. A smaller dog wouldn’t weigh as much.

I think the breathable fabric is nice, what it needs is a toe guard. That would make a difference.

We adopted a shelter dog a little over a month ago, and as anyone with a rescue pup knows they do not like their feet touched at all. Well he loves to come for the walk to school to pick up my kids, but we live in New England so there’s snow and a ton of salt everywhere.

One day I realized he can’t go anymore because of the salt. So I asked my cousin if she knew where to get affordable boots and she told me about this site. Found these boots and they’ve been amazing! He’s a lot better about having his feet touched (still needs some work but coming around) and he’s so happy he can come for the walks again.

He gets SO many compliments walking down the street. My favorite was Wow that dog has better shoes than I do! Haha. Def recommend these to anyone thinking of buying them!.

This was our first try with snow boots for our dogs. They work really well. There is no extra lining for warmth, but that is ok since we only go outside for 10 minutes to use the bathroom and play a little and then we all come in together.

We wanted to see if the dogs would even let us put them on and the dogs do. The velcro works well to hold them on and the dogs really like having their feet protected from the cold wet snow!!! Just be careful of their hidden Dew Claws when sliding the boots on and measure their feet carefully.

Ours worked out perfect. Hightly recommend!!! P. S. I also saw a boot putting on tool on baxterboo I might try but you can put these boots on without it too.

I don’t usually write reviews for anything, ever, but these boots and the Wooftown customer service was very much deserving of some kudos. I have a shepherd cross rescue dog who has fairly large feet, and while she has a very thick coat to keep her warm (and to keep my home consistently covered in fur, LOL), she does get cold and wet feet.

I have tried several other types including those adorable little balloons and the other more wintery types we’ve all seen. They’re great for smaller pooches, but just didn’t stay on or last long. So when I found these muttluks there’s just everything to love about them! For one, they are very well-made, and the quality completely justifies the higher cost.

They have an adjustable Velcro ankle strap that holds them in place. we have lost one on occasion but have always gone back and found it (I recommend strapping the Velcro nice and tight). But what I also really love about these boots is that there is a solid base in a thick suede fabric that doesn’t allow any salt and moisture to get in… and they’re tall which is great because they cover her shins and look super adorable! Honestly, I couldn’t justify spending this amount on dog boots and I unfortunately spent far more in failed options before getting these.

I believe these will definitely last this cold Ontario salty snowy icy season and I have the feeling they will last for at least two more winters. My only suggestion would be to rinse off the bottoms if there’s salt on them when you get home.

Oh, and I would also like to mention that I’ve been trying to shop local and I was under the impression that Wooftown was a large online corporation, so I was hesitant… but when I had questions and needed sizing support with the boots, I was greeted by a friendly real live human who took the time and helped me make the best purchase! Like I said, I almost never write reviews unless I truly find something exceptional, and I’m very pleased with this purchase and the humans behind this business.

The fit is super important for this product to work correctly. I was super happy with the results as we have a husky mix (80lbs) who loves being outside (even in -20) and knew that a bit more protection means he gets more play time.

Since the booties are made of leather bottoms you end up with a few mm\’s play in stretch. I found that once the booties were molded to his feet (after some winter walks) it\’s hard to beat. Due to his breed I would think that he\’d be a bit too warm during the summer wearing these but we\’ll giv\’em a go once we get into the warmer temps (considering what concrete can heat up to).
