20 Best Hiking Sandals For Hawaii (2023 Updated)

No other make of footwear has ever been as perfect for my feet as Merrell. I have fairly flat feet and want arch support, which Merrell provides in just the right shape in just the right spot on the footbed, not too far forward like in some other shoe brands reputed to be super comfy.

(Those other brands make me feel like I’m being tortured by something hard placed under my foot where it doesn’t fit. ). Also, most shoe brands with velcro straps have the straps designed so that there’s not much variation in how tightly they can be adjusted.

My feet are moderately wide in front but narrow in the heel; and bc my feet are rather flat, if I want the straps to fit securely, I need to pull them farther than many shoes will allow. Merrell allows maximum adjustability, and the straps don’t hang out at the end (again, as they tend to do with other brands.

Construction of their shoes and boots is always quality, and they look great! These sandals in particular look pretty and not clunky, probably because while they have substantial straps across the arch and back of the foot, the straps in front are more delicate.

Also, please note that there are three — count them: 3 — different adjustment points for a perfect custom fit. I love them.

DSW did not have this sandal in their store, so I ordered them online. I liked the convenience of being able to return them the DSW location nearby. I like the sandals, however, it’s too bad that they didn’t come in a wide width or have adjustable Velcro straps across the toes…the other straps are Velcro.

I usually wear a 7 1/2, but after reading the comments, I ordered the 7 and I’m glad I did. These sandals only came in whole sizes. I can wear these sandals in place of my clunky Merrill sneakers on vacation.

They look well with shorts, skorts, slacks and casual dresses.

I have had multiple pairs of the Sandspur Rose Sandal over the past few years. However, in the past six months or so, the style changed (despite the name not changing). Instead of having the adjustable strap over the top of the foot as in the past, it is not behind the heel.

As someone with wider and fatter feet, this has made the shoes less comfortable and tighter on the top of my foot, and after a long day when my feet are swollen, there is no room to adjust. 🙁 It’s sad, because I used to LOVE these sandals and would wear them for anything and everything.

If you have skinner feet, this may not be an issue, but if you want room to adjust, you really don’t have any.

I bought these to replace an old, old pair of Columbia sandals that had thinner straps. The sandals themselves & the straps are great! Super sturdy and great traction. They aren’t the most attractive (in black anyway), but I buy these for function, not to wear on a date! I look forward to wearing them to do some (light) hiking with the dogs; they’re super comfortable walking on uneven grass or on sidewalks/roads for long strolls.

True-to-size when I buy Columbias and I’m thinking of getting a second pair before they become unavailable or sell out. They’re a little wide for my (narrow) feet, but I like how that only makes them feel sturdier & I don’t think they’d be wide on most other people.

I’d definitely recommend them & I think they’d be good for most outdoor activities.

This is an OK sandal but could be better. I own Columbia’s older two sandal that seemed a little too lose for my narrow (B-width) foot. That sandal could have had more Velcro to bring it closer too the foot.

I bought the three strap to prove a closer fit. While the three strap does fit that purpose, I found the bottom of the shoe was not as pliable and comfortable with the cushioning as the two strap. In summary l, it was a little too firm.

I think Columbia wanted less cushion for greater spring back. If one has good feet that would work well. But with with feet needing more cushioning, the two strap was better. Columbus should make a three strap with greater cushioning.

I wanted to love these…. I bought a very similar pair over a year ago and they were the most comfortable sandals I’ve ever owned. Not so with these. Theres something about the footbed…my foot just doesn’t sit right in these.

I didnt return them, but they’re not my go to sandals like the previous pair. Columbia! Why did you discontinue last years style? Bring them back!…pleassssee.

I have long been an advocate of minimalist shoes–zero drop, flexible, minimal support. But, recently I started experiencing plantar fasciitis, a painful heel condition. I was taking a trip and could tell the thin sole was not going to work for me as I walked any distance.

I found the cushier sole much more comfortable for me, and I wore them in and out of the salt water and canoe daily. Once on a long walk through a sandy area, I developed a blister with the sand rubbing between my foot and the strap, but that would probably happen with any sandal.

And they did develop a pretty bad odor at times. Fortunately, they were easy to wash and dried relatively quickly, so that was an easy fix. I still believe in the more “natural” shoe concept, but for now, this shoe has worked well for me.

I also like the extreme flexibility of having three adjustable straps that the velcro then firmly holds in place.

I picked up these sandals to serve as my water shoes on a recent trip canoeing in the Boundary Waters. I was nervous about their ability to workout for portaging the canoe, but another camper who had done it before assured me it would be fine.

And wouldn’t you know it, it was! I didn’t buy these in advance enough to fully get used to where the straps land, but despite that (and after spending a while adjusting them), I only got a couple small blisters right at the end of the trip.

This was with constantly getting in and out of water and hiking bags or canoes through portages. I never felt like my feet got specifically tired because of my shoes. They stayed decently anchored even when trying to take big steps in water, or when my feet got stuck in deep mud.

They felt decently secure over wet surfaces and rocks (I didn’t slip any more than anyone else, at least. ) I’m looking forward to continuing to use these a lot at home as they look pretty nice, and they’ll probably be my go-to water shoes for most things going forward.

I did severe damage to my knee in the spring of 2022, tearing and/or spraining all the ligaments, fracturing my fibia and causing two separate tears in the meniscus. Being a fall risk as I recovered, I knew I would need a really good, sturdy hiking type sandal for summer.

I can across this sandal and like that I could customize it to my feet. This sandal not only gave me stability when walking, but it also helped alleviate the arthritis pain in my feet. My husband was the first to notice that I was not in pain all the time.

The wider foot bed gave me the support I needed to feel secure as I learned how to walk again on a very unstable knee that would take months of rehab to recover from and heal. I have already bought a pair for next summer in a different color and will continue to purchase this particular sandal going forward.

I bought these shoes 7 months ago. They are the best shoes i have ever owned. I am overweight, and I have a large, wide foot with long toes. Size 11. I usually only have comfort if I wear expensive inserts in an expensive shoe.

I’ve worn these shoes every day since I got them. I’ve taken lots of hikes. I chase 2 kids around all day. We have gone wading in creeks. They’ve been wet and dirty a lot. They have taken a beating. And they are still in good shape and still feel great.

My feet don’t hurt in them, even at the end of the day. I recently went back to wearing sneakers since the weather is freezing, and I am sad not to be wearing these sandals. I think part of what’s so great is that you can exactly tighten and size the entire shoe with each individual strap, so you get a perfect fit.

The sole is also very good. I’m buying more and would recommend to everybody.

I love, love, LOVE my Viakix hiking sandals!!!!! They have become my absolute FAVORITES! That’s why I ordered a second pair! I’ve been wearing the same pair I bought last year practically every day this summer (and wore them practically every day last summer, too!) and I’ve decided I never want to be without them.

I used to always wear Teva’s. I still like Teva’s. But I absolutely adore the Viakix comfort. The Viakix sandals offer a much cushier foot bed which results in outstanding shock absorption, while still providing good support for long walks.

I have very narrow feet and bony ankles, and I’m able to fully customize the fit to be snug on my foot in all the right places. (But it appears that they would be great for people with meatier feet and ankles too, due to the velcro straps.

) And my pair has stood the test of time (being worn practically every day over the course of two summers) and also has withstood all kinds of weather. I only ordered the second pair to insure that I’d always have a pair.

I don’t need to take the new pair out of the box yet. I really can’t say enough good things about the design, fit and comfort of these sandals. And they’re actually cute to look at, too! TEN THUMBS UP for the Viakix design and quality!!! May your Womens Hiking Sandals ALWAYS be in production!.

These sandals feel comfortable and I like the neutral colour of the straps. Unfortunately they are very wide across the arch and toes. Unlike other reviewers I found the ankle strap was fine but there was too much leftover toe strap when pulled to the tightest fitting.

I think they are not designed for narrow feet.

Ten years ago I purchased a pair of Keene Newports in Wiamea, Kauai. I have wore the heck out of them ever since. Sadly, the sole on the right sandle is peeling off and Keene does not resole sandles.

My memory didn’t serve me righy and I bought a pair of Targhee III’s thinking it was a good replacement. Well, after a few months of on/off wear, I have to say that the Targhee III is too “lightweight” for the activities I do.

The construction is NOTHING link the Newport. I returned them to REI-Fresno yesterday because the stitching on the heel pull loop unraveled – NOT BUENO! These are a comfortable sandle but I am afraid they will not hold up to the creek crossing, hiking, kayaking, and other activities I do.

The toe-box is smaller than the Newport. To be fair, I see the Targhee III as a good “around town” sandal but if you like to hike, and even backpack, in it, I am certain it will blow out on you. I give it 3-Stars for this reason.

I almost bought the Hoka Hopara when I was white water rafting in NC. But, I didn’t. And boy, do I wish I would have. I was in the local Tri & Run back home in Winter Garden, and tried them on. The Hopara is now my go to multi-use “shoe” for everything from walking the dog to kicking the soccer ball with my son.

I would recommend wearing socks with them for a few weeks of wear while they loosen up. The socks take the edge off. Also, if it’s chilly out the socks are a nice addition. The best experience with the Hoparas was hiking in Sedona.

I hiked with them on Bell Rock and they exceeded all expectations. They were sticky on the slick rock; and, protected my feet well but allowed them to breath and not overheat. I used a mid hiking sock for added comfort.

Then, I used them hiking the Oak Creek area and I never had to take them off as I tracked through the stream. I had complete protection from the rocks. As soon as I came out of the water, there was no squishy sounds and they were right back into protective and supportive function on the trail to Buddha Beach.

I love them so much that I had to get a Tan pair, so that I had choices depending on what I am wearing. My first pair was black. I even wore the black ones out and they blend in as if I’m wearing a nice shoe!I have even done some light jogging in them.

I read reviews wear people are having trouble with the stitching or adhering of the shoe, but I beat these up on rocks and through water and have had NO ISSUES! I would highly recommend the Hopara for all things outdoors.

I bought theses initially for my husband. He has plantar fasciitis and wears the Hoka sneakers for walking. We were preparing for a camping and hiking trip to Zion, Bryce, Escalante and Grand Canyon.

I was impressed when they came in and as I do not have a good water shoe, ordered a pair as well. I wore my in the Marrows at Zion. They were like walking on clouds. I used them for hiking the Narrows at Zion – a mixture of sand, rock and water that can range from ankle to waist deep.

I wore them with a pair of socks and they were fantastic!!! My husband loves them so much and was so blistered from his hiking boots continues to wear them for hikes in Escalante, Bryce and the Kaibab trail on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Hola saved his feet and our trip. For extended wear, I recommend wearing with socks but they are great in water, sand or rock. The treads are excellent and they are like walking on pillows! At the end of the day, the rinse off and dry fast!!! Thank you and don’t stop Making this shoe!!!.

This is a great design, weight, comfort all is good But what is most imp is the worst part, The grip, hold of your sole. If m hiking somewhere in middle of the dense jungle and found some slipry down trails, the grip of sole is imp it should stop sudden slippery places but what this nakli chappan did, Ganda wala dhoka.

Fit, Finish, Features are excellent no doubt that this footwear is durable and trust worthy. It is light in weight and adjustable in all kinds of foot sizes. The only improvements needed is that the adhesive used to hold the buckle system and sole together; weakens with age and gets separated.

My footwear underwent the same problem luckily after the expiry of warranty period. I truly loved the footwear and my mind wasn’t ready to switch to a now sandals so I had to get it stitched from a local cobbler.

I hope the company makes necessary improvements in existing or upcoming versions.

This is my first expensive flip flop I’ve ever bought in life, as I have never spent over $20 on flip flops. But I decided to splurge on one for my next upcoming vacation, since I’d be walking tons and wanted something comfortable but could provide more support than those thin as paper soled flip flops.

I found this to be exactly what I’m looking for; comfortable, soft fabric doesnt hurt between toes, great arch support, light weight and fashionable. I got wide width since I prefer wide over med width on all of my merrells whenever its available and I find it perfect for my feet.

I ordered my usual size 7 and wish I’d have bought 1/2 size bigger as I tend to wear my flip flops slightly behind and if I do that with this shoes my heel almost comes out. It does fit fine when I put my toes all the way in but find it almost too fit.

Maybe this would be better if I’m walking a lot. But if you wear flip flops like me, I suggest ordering 1/2 size up.

What a disappointment, I have been a Merrell buyer for years and years. Both sandals and city walking boots. Always the best shoes in my closet till now. Not just this sandal but two others have issues.

The straps on these do not fit tight enough to make them safe because the velcro does not meet up with the other half, it goes way beyond and cannot stay together making it loose and a danger. The other model is the: Terran 3 Cush Slide Product Number: J002720 Color: Black This on the band across the top is way to big so as not to stay firm so they are more like house slippers than I was expecting.

My previous slides fit well and never slipped off and were safe to walk anywhere in. I was expecting all three that I bought to feel and fit as the great ones from the past. I find the new ones attractive but substantially less strong but rather flimsy with thinner soles and poor fitting.

I doubt I will try again. Considering the price I can’t risk it.

The Cush Slide was a repeat purchase for me. In past years I have had 4 other pairs of similar Merrell shoes, replacing after they wear out. I like using this style of shoe for my “in the house” shoes.

Normally, I am supposed to wear orthotics for arch support, but find that wearing socks and tennis shoes in the house to accommodate the orthotics is just too much in the summertime. This shoe provides the arch support I need for routine household wear.

They are comfortable, stay on the feet well, feel and look good. Only if I have a task to do which requires hours of standing in one spot do I need to revert back to the tennis shoes with orthotics. I still gave a 5 star rating because being able to free my feet of socks, tennis shoes and orthotics in the summertime for most of my indoor time is a big deal to me!.
