Best Highlights For Dark Hair (2026 Updated)

Pro: great product, I’ve been using it for over 20 years. I have gotten compliments from actual hairdressers on my highlights who thought they were salon highlights. Con: cap is garbage as others have pointed out.

Mine ripped, i. e. the cap part ripped away from the tie part but I called L’Oreal and they are going to replace the kit (supposedly). Anyway I’m pretty sure you can get a reusable cap at Sally and it is worth the investment if so.

I did not have a huge problem getting my hair through the holes but I highly advise using the metal hook and not the plastic hook. They are NOT the same. Also I didn’t try and do the back this time. I have in the past and the results have been great but you can’t do it with a slip slidey cap or at least I wouldn’t attempt it.

The bottom line is you need first of all a good product that will give you pretty highlights and not weird orange hair. This is that product. I have medium brown mouse hair but I always use the Chardonnay i.

e. the lighter tint because I have found that when you try to go for the more subtle tints you can end up with orange hair and highlighter remorse. You MUST leave the product on for the full time indicated and sometimes longer.

Check the strand like the box says. Furthermore, the price compares favorably to other highlighting products. I used to think all highlighting kits were created equal. I was wrong. Many do not even HAVE a metal hook.

To try and highlight with these crappy caps using a plastic hook is like trying to catch an alligator with a fishing pole. Bottom line: this is a great product even disregarding the great price. It is what is says: petite.

You cannot highlight a full head of long flowing locks with this kit. This is great for literally highlights on short to medium length hair i. e. a few standout locks of hair as opposed to basically going blonde and calling it highlights.

Do not highlight when you are in a hurry and/or you have a date later. You must always consider the possibility that something will go wrong, even just missing a chunk. For example, because of my ripped cap, my left side is blonder than my right, but since I don’t have a hot date tonight, I don’t care.

I didn’t use all the product and I will fix it later on. Give yourself 48 hours to fix any mistakes or highlighting remorse issues. Also I highly advise investing in blue/purple shampoo which takes any brassiness out.

never ever ever buy this product. I have been highlighting my own hair for 20 years. I have never ever used this brand, but my normal brand was out of stock everywhere. the cap is ridiculous because you can’t see any of the holes or circles or anything on it.

then once you do find a hole you can’t punch through it. I’ve never really enjoyed coloring my own hair, but I do it out of necessity for saving money. but I’ve never hated it this much. if you like your sanity do not buy this product.

I received this hair dye to trial as part of the Beauty Review Crew. I have used this brand of hair dye a few times over the past couple years. In particular, I have used the shade ‘Darkest brown’ which is the same shade I’m trialing today.

The shade has always been is a lovely vibrant colour and the colour result is similar to my natural hair colour. The dye promises to 100% grey hair coverage and it lives up to its promise. Preparing the dye for application is nice and easy.

After applying the gloves that are included in the packaging, you pour the colour formula into the bottle of developer before placing the lid back on and shaking the bottle until completely mixed. It’s that easy! Then starting at the roots, you evenly apply the dye.

The dye goes on smoothly and, surprisingly, the dye scent isn’t as strong as other brands. Other brands tend to have a strong chemical smell which makes my eyes water and nose tingle when breathing it in.

Clairol have done a great job at producing a hair product with a low scent. One of the best things about Clairol’s nice n’ easy hair dyes is the short processing times. Unlike other brands that have a processing time of upwards to an hour to reach your desired shade, these dye have an average processing time of just 25 minutes.

The short processing time means you can dye your hair during your lunch break, before a night out, or before a date, without it taking up too much of your time. The rinsing process is also quite a smooth and easy process.

After applying some warm water, give your hear/head a little massage and then rinse until the water runs clear from all the dye. It normally takes around two minutes for the water to run clear. Then using the conditioning Clairol conditioning treatment that comes with the hair dye, you apply from roots to tips and leave for a couple minutes before rinsing.

The conditioning treatment has a lovely scent and is nice and thick. It’s almost like applying a luxurious hair mask. It glides onto the hair smoothly and evenly. After rinsing the conditioning treatment you can instantly feel how hydrated you hair feels.

Dying your hair often dehydrates it and your hair can feel a little worse for wear. Clairol’s hair dyes are gentle on your hair and the conditioning treatment prevents damage and keeps your hair hydrated and feeling lovely.

After towel-drying my hair, I blow-dried my hair until was dry. Looking in the mirror you could instantly see how vibrant and lovely the hair colour result was, and it looked and felt really healthy.

I am always so very impressed with the results every time and I often get compliments from friends and family members. As my hair grows fairly quickly, I use this product every 2-3 months to help cover grey hairs.

Despite dying my hair so regularly, my hair has remained healthy and manageable, and hasn’t compromised my hair in any way. The only downside I can mention is that the dye stains your skin. Normally hair spray or acetone on a cotton ball or cotton pad helps remove hair dyes from skin but I found this dye to be lot stronger and barely budged from the skin.

I also tried scrubbing with soap and dishwashing detergent but the dye only faded slightly. It took a few days of scubbing before the dye faded completely. The best thing of all about Clairol’s Nice n’ Easy hair dyes are they cost just $9 from your local supermarket.

Sometimes, you can grab them on special for just $6! SIX BUCKS! Now that’s what you call a bargain! Why pay $200+ t an expensive hairdresser when you can get almost the same results for just $9.

I received Medium Chestnut Brown as part of the review crew. My hair is dyed medium brown over grey/white and is a few inches below my collarbones. It’s fine and flat with a slight wave immediately after air drying but this falls out quickly, it’s also horribly frizzy.

I found the instructions easy to follow and the dye easy to use although I did find I’d missed some areas which is unusual for me. I was using this on about 1 inch of grey roots, apart from where I’d missed it covered it well although it’s lighter on those grey areas and the other areas are now darker.

This means my roots are still visible although not grey and it would be good if the colour guide also showed the outcome on grey or white hair. I don’t usually see the roots so evident with other home colour I’ve done.

However the colour on the roots is nice and I might keep using this to get all my hair to a lighter colour. I didn’t notice that the smell was better or worse than other brands I’ve used and I had no adverse reaction on my scalp.

I wasn’t able to see a blend of tones and highlights although I did like the colour on both the grey and dyed areas. My hair felt soft after using and easy to comb. After a few further washes I’ve not see much fade or loss of condition.

Overall this Is a good dye for home colouring with good grey coverage although I feel I need to be more attentive when I use it. It’s a good price too.

As the cost of everything rises I have gone down to bi-monthly hair visits and have been colouring my roots in between. I have stuck to two main brands the past year so I was excited to trial clairols Nice n Easy to see how it compares! The new packaging is pleasing and clear on what it delivers.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the scent wasn’t overbearing whilst I applied this to my roots. It mixed very well in the applicator bottle and was so easy to apply. The gloves fit well and I waited the appropriate time until rinsing off.

The colour rinsed off well and the conditioner was lovely. I decided to let my hair air dry for the best and most accurate review on colour, shine and coverage of greys. So the colour match was great, it definitely covered my grey roots and my hair was a little dry on the ends but nothing a good leave in conditioner can’t fix! I like that this dye did what it said and was not gimmicky or over priced compared to competitors.

A solid budget buy option if you prefer colouring hair at home. It may dry your hair out if used frequently so a good quality conditioner for coloured hair would be a must alongside this product.

It has been a long time since I had done a cap highlight on myself but I was open to switching up my hair color and trying out Revlon’s Color Effects Frost Glow. I used the smaller hook end of the tool because I wanted a subtle highlight.

It took a few tries before I got the method down for pulling the hair through the cap. I think it is really important to keep the tool flat to your head with the hook pointed up, to get the best results without pulling at your hair.

Because I didn’t want a dramatic change, I planned to only pulled hair through the circled holes and only in the front and crown portions of the cap. I found it much too difficult to pull hair from any farther back on my head, so there was no chance I was going to be able to accomplish an all-over highlight, even if I wanted to.

I would recommend having someone help you pull hair through the cap if you are going for a full head of highlights and definitely if you are new to cap highlights. The mixing and coloring process was super easy.

The mixture did not smell harsh which was definitely appreciated. I would prefer a better fitting pair of gloves to wear. As you apply the mixture and make sure each strand is saturated, the gloves start to slide off and get in the way.

I intended to check my hair after 10 minutes but my timer never went off, so it was 15 minutes before I checked. When I checked it, I panicked because it looked very blonde and brassy compared to my chocolate cherry brown hair color.

After rinsing it off and shampooing and conditioning with the included toning shampoo and conditioner, I felt a little bit better about the color. It still looked very light (mostly in front) when I started to dry my hair with my Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer.

After styling, other than looking a little more 2000’s chunky highlight at the front of my face than I would have liked, I am very happy with the look! I was actually pleasantly surprised that the color chart on the box was accurate! It would be nice to get a bigger packet of the toning conditioner and shampoo.

I have shoulder-length fine hair and used the whole packet. Even putting two of each packet would be beneficial especially to those with long or thick hair. I could possibly see myself using this kit in the future, though I would probably force my husband to help pull hair through the cap.

From hook to styling, the whole process took me about 3 1/2 hours. It gets a little chaotic trying to hold a mirror and angle yourself just right to reach all of the holes on the cap. If you’re looking to save yourself a hundred (or more) dollars and you have the time and patience, I would definitely recommend this Revlon Color Effects kit!.

So this color was exactly what I would pick if I was going to a salon. I have pretty dark hair on top and bleached hair about 1/2 down. So I was a bit nervous to try it but I figured since I work from home I could always fix it if it went horribly wrong.

I just preface this review with the fact that I have a lot of hair. It is thick and I’ve always been told that I have about 3-4 times the amount than most do. When in a ponytail it is about 1. 25″ in diameter.

So keep that in mind when I say that the cap needs a ton of planning and patience. I didnt have anyone to help me do it so I sectioned my hair into four sections. I wanted to make sure I didn’t only get highlights on the top and sides.

I started this early and let me tell you the cap is what took the longest. I have used regular hair bleach and foils so I was prepared to spend a lot of time pulling out my hair. once I got it all done an hour and 20 mins later I mixed up the product and was surprised how pleasant it smelled.

So for me I started with the front and front sides because I knew that would stay the longest and that’s where I wanted my hair to be lighter. Then I did the top middle and sides and finished with the back.

I clipped my hair with my plastic clips to keep my hair out of my face. I had a little left over so I decided to pull out a couple extra pieces and coated those right away. I would definitely recommend not taking it off early.

I think it needs the full processing time to get the color closest to the box. What I liked about the cap was that I didn’t have to foil my hair to protect the other hair from getting bleached. what I didn’t like was not truly knowing how it would come out.

When it was time to rinse. I carefully pulled the cap off. I was so scared my hair would tear out, but it was pretty easy to take off. So much easier than it was to put it on. lol. I did not use the enclosed shampoo because I have my own violet shampoo and blue shampoo.

So I used that and my blue hair mask to condition it. I was shocked how my hair felt though. it was soft and not dry like I thought it might be. Over I love the color and am shocked at how good it came out.

I think had I had help to do the cap it would have been faster. But for the price and results I am hooked. Will definitely be buying another box or two to keep up my highlights during the summer. I’m loving my hair and the color looks so good on my bleached hair.

it came out lighter than the top and I’m good with that.

This product is horrible! I was scared to use the 30 volume developer so I just used 20 and it make my hair extremely dry and brittle. Left it on for the time suggested and the color didn’t take to my light brown hair.

The top of my head is dark red and the bottom barely has any red tones. Washed my hair once since dying and most of the color came out. Don’t use this! Waste of money and damaged my hair for nothing!.

This was my first attempt at doing my own permanent haircolor. Ambitious, yes, but it went perfectly! Took a couple practice trys getting the hair to come through the cap nicely, and that ended up being the hardest most time consuming part.

Having someone to help would’ve made that a lot easier. I just did crown highlights and it gave nice small strands of color all over. A helper would be a must if you’re going to do all over highlights (unless you feel like sitting with a plastic cap on your head for 4 hours).

I have light golden brown hair, and in 25 mins it was done. Only drawback is the smell of the leave-in toner which is the last step 😛 So many haircolors (Feria) are nice smelling, why couldn’t Loreal do this? Especially on a leave-in product.

Oh, and when you mix everything you get this huge tub of haircolor about 1. 5×1. 5×4 or 5 inches. I barely made a dent in it and I have hair about 2in past my shoulders. Maybe if you’re doing this with your sister or something you could rinse re-use the cap.

You’d definantly have enough dye.

So today I did some serious self-care including doing a MAJOR change to my hair! I used the Orchid Glow Féria hair dye today and I’m OBSESSED! My hair is normally dark brown but since it is a new season I felt some change was necessary!! Really happy with the results of this product! I normally have highlights at the salon but because of COVID have not been able to go, so my roots have got quite dark. This has really brightened up my hair again and would definitely buy again! The reason for a 4 rating is for the applying process.

I used the hat with the hooks. The hat has plastic cover inside which has no holes in. I found it better to pierce through the holes before putting the hat on to help pulling through the hair. It was quite tricky at first to pull the hair through but after practice it becomes easier.

It was very time consuming from start to finish about 2hrs for the final result. I didn’t pull through all the holes and used about half of the mixture and left on for 30 mins. This gave a nice finish with it not being too harsh and brighten ups your hair.

I bought this to try giving myself some highlights during lockdown, as I was fed up of my hair and wanted something new. I tried using the highlighting cap included in this kit, but as I have short hair it didn’t work very well, and the cap itself was very flimsy and broke when trying to use it.

Instead I ditched this and used the comb method for highlights, by dipping a comb into the bleach mixture and combing it through my hair. Im pleasantly surprised with this kit! My hair turned out well, not as light as I was wanting it to, but I do have mid brown hair so im not surprised, but the highlights actually came out well! I would use this again when I next want to brighten up my hair and add a bit more highlights! A lot better than other bleaching kits I have used.

This is the second time I’ve used this product , which is quite good as regards highlighting , but the shampoo provided is not sufficient to wash out all the product. So even after rinsing, washing with the shampoo , rinsing and using a conditioner and rinsing some more , the towel I used is ruined by bleaching.

Plus , the new towel I showered with is also ruined and I didn’t use it on my hair. I’m not impressed.

Die Highlights sollten überall verteilt und dünn sein, also habe ich mir feine Strähnchen aus den Haaren genommen und sie mit dem Produkt bepinselt.

Das zusammenmischen war dank der Anleitung kinderleicht und das Auftragen war ebenfalls sehr einfach. Das einzige, was mich hier etwas gestört hat, war der beigelegte “Pinsel”, der für mich etwas zu hart ist und die Farbe viel mehr abnimmt, als aufträgt.

Nach 30 Minuten einwirken, habe ich meine Haare ganz normal mit kaltem Wasser ausgewaschen und shampooniert, kurz trocken geföhnt und das Ergebnis war super. Nicht zu hell und nicht so, dass man gar nichts sieht.

Für mich genau richtig und es war super leicht, dieses Ergebnis zu kreieren. Wichtig ist auch, dass meine Haare dadurch keinerlei Schaden genommen haben. Kann ich also guten Herzens weiterempfehlen.

Im Handumdrehen ist die Farbe aufgetragen, dann muss man nur noch die Einwirkzeit abwarten bis ausgespült werden kann und dann sieht man das wundervolle Ergebnis. Ich bin wirklich sehr begeistert wie einfach es ist Strähnchen zuhause selbst zu setzen, bisher habe ich immer nur den kompletten Kopf gefärbt oder mal die Ansätze behandelt.

Der Geruch ist auch angenehm für eine Haarfarbe, keine beißenden Dämpfe. Die Pflege ist ausreichend. Man kann ja auch immer noch seinen eigenen Lieblingsprodukte verwenden, aber ich mag die beiliegende Kur immer sehr gerne und finde sie sehr pflegend.

Ich würde das Produkt jederzeit nachkaufen und kann es jedem empfehlen, der gerne einige frische Akzente möchte und seine Haarfarbe lebendiger gestalten will.

TranslateShow in original languageIch durfte OLIA Highlights blond testen und hatte mich total darüber gefreut. Haare frisch nochmal gewaschen und los sollte es gehen. Zuerst einmal zur Verpackung: Sie ist gut gemacht.

Auch das Mischtöpfchen aus dickerer Pappe finde ich in Umweltpunkten gut. Das Mischen selbst war einfach. Ich wusste, dass es nur für Highlights sein sollte, war aber dennoch enttäuscht von der Menge an Färbemittel, da ich sehr dickes Haar und noch dazu dunkles habe.

Am Ende habe ich mich aus Sicherheitsgründen dazu entschlossen nur 1-2 Strähnen aufzuhellen, da ich im Kundenverkehr arbeite und mir einen Negativ-Try nicht so ohne Weiteres leisten kann. Das Färbeergebnis: Kaum sichtbar gewesen.

Für sehr dunkles Haar daher nicht zu empfehlen. Helleres, dünnes Haar ist aber sicherlich auch mit der Menge an Farbe gut zu highlighten. Für mich persönlich war das Produkt leider nichts.

I liked this product it, it is easy to use and the colour leaves nice highlights. It is one of the better products for highlights I have used. Only thing is the smell it has a strong smell to it. I would recommend it for anyone who is looking to do highlights.

What happiness when there is such a product. It is simply happiness to have it. The most unique things that have ever been created around the world. the best.

I believe this is one of the highlighting kits that young me tried using in middle school. It’s results were minimal and would take multiple processes to get the results shown on the box, which were not great tbh.

All in all, just stay away from box highlighters in general.
