Best Henna Hair Dye Reviews (2024 Updated)

Y’all, I have been struggling with my hair recently. I moved towns and lost my long term hairstylists as a result. Three new hairstylists later, dissatisfied and tired of paying city prices for inferior service, I decided to take my hair into my own hands.

Try as I might, I kept getting it wrong with dyes from Sally’s, once dying it so dark that I freaked and washed it with evil shampoo and baking soda a million times to try to bleed the color out. Then me and my head full of greys decided that, gosh darn it, we were going to try henna.

I got a henna cream by another company and it left me with highlighter orange roots despite being a mahogany shade. I had ordered some natural red henna from Henna Guys previously but talked myself out of using it because the shade was too light.

So I ordered the Burgundy. Last night, I mixed the henna/indigo/clay powder with approximately 2 cups of black coffee and beat it dutifully until it resembled brownie batter. I left it over night and woke up early this morning, washed my hair with clarifying shampoo, blowed it dry.

After I stirred in a tablespoon of ACV, it was time to apply my henna. I found it went on great and honestly liked the application process more than chemical dyes. I put the bowl over a trashbag in my sink but honestly I made less of a mess than I normally do.

I applied to just my roots and a couple inches down and let it sit 1. 5 hour. Then I added it to my lengths for the remaining 1. 5 hour. I rinsed as instructed and conditioned some argan deep conditioner.

I am so stoked. I am in love with this henna and I am never looking back! Isn’t this just the prettiest color?.

Not pure henna! I’ve been using BAQ henna for 10 years but recently grew out the henna and had ****** medium blonde hair. This stuff dyed my hair a deep red in one application, from my natural medium blonde.

That can’t happen with pure henna. No highlights, dyed my hair a uniform dark red. It was a nice color though. Then, I noticed that I was shedding a lot. Which, I had read in other reviews and didn’t think it was a big deal.

I don’t normally shed so I wasn’t too concerned. The other day I realized my hair was actually breaking off about two inches from my scalp. I’ve never had that happen before. I was growing out my hair and now I’ll have to cut it pixie length.

I’m afraid to put any color on top since I don’t know what was in the henna. Oh, and it’s been two months and the color is still bleeding when I shower (I don’t use harsh shampoo or anything with honey or tea tree oil which I noticed will lighten henna).

It’s super disheartening after reading all the good reviews. This stuff is not BAQ. For those interested, I used the Deep Red Henna Hair Dye (has clay in it, which I’ve used before) dye released with room temperature chamomile tea.

Dye released overnight and applied to clean damp hair for 3 hours.

I received this in a non-subscription CurlBox I purchased. I don’t have long hair, and the amount of dye in this box barely covered it, but the biggest problem was how dry this left my hair. I used THREE TIMES the amount of conditioner as usual in my rinse (no way I wasn’t going to condition my hair, that’s how dry it was), but my hair was still dry.

I used a conditioner before another wash and let it sit in my hair for a long time, and my hair was still dry when rinsed. I DEEP conditioned and masked, and my ends were STILL dry. This stuff seriously dried out my hair and it took a couple weeks to restore its moisture.

My curl was bad the whole time, and my hair was frizzy. I will never use this again and don’t recommend it if you value your hair. The extra star is because the color coverage was good. But seriously, avoid it.

I used the wine red and it dyed my natural blonde hair color super well. Same coloring power as box dye that I’ve used in the past (feria, fructis) I left it in for 40 minutes and it only stained my scalp a bit.

Super stinky though.

Best henna my wife could find. Works really great. But there are many others out the on the web, so be careful. Reshma brand is the best i’ve ever found for her. And I obtained a Cosmotology Certificate and Licence.

So i’ve definately dyed with plenty of different manufacturers. For Hennas, Reshma will always redo your hair, making it shiney, new and usually about 6 eeeks out.

I love HENNA. Ive been a hairdresser for nearly 50 years and have used every product available. My daughters hair is nearly ruined from bleachers and colors. I refuse to use them. Once a year I will use Henna.

I would love to use it more than that but dont have the time. I just finished with this color of the brown sable and it is beautiful. So shiny and if youre losing hair by any chance, Henna seems too thick at it and cover up thinning.

Very healthy for the hair. Just heat up some water on the stove and mix like a pudding. I add a little vinegar (2tbs)and a little coffee to make it stay longer. because my hair is nearly to my waist I had to use half of a jar but thats fine because the cost is Very affordable.

Hopefully I can do my hair twice a year now. Ive never really had gray hair at 71. I feel fortunate but I have a few gray hairs that are covered. I love long healthy hair and I thank God for it!. Love the product.

Oh with Henna you wanna clean hair, not the same as using dyes. There you go!.

This works great! I love it. It last longer than any semi color. It doesn’t stain your hands. It’s wonderful.

Love this hair color. The price is phenomenal, the application is easy, and no breakage or damage to hair. I have some gray and the coverage this henna hair dye gives me is subtle. Not a 100% coverage hair dye, but gives your gray an ombre type of effect.

For me its perfect.

I just started coloring my hair with henna at the beginning of this year. I was having some health issues last year and my hair was a wreck as a result; dry and falling out so bad. I didn’t want to make it worse by continuing to use traditional salon or store bought dye, so I found this as an alternative.

I love it! My hair feels SO much softer and healthier. The only reason I’m knocking off a star is because it doesn’t fully cover all my grays. I’m okay with it though, because my hair is in much better condition, but I have to color my roots a little more often to keep the grays covered.

I find that this is more of a highlight than true coverage or color saturation. I’ll continue to use it though! You can also reuse it which is awesome. So if I’m just doing my roots only, I get 2 uses out of one bottle which is so cost effective.

I began using this product in May during our first lockdown when I couldn’t get to the hairdresser to colour my hair. It worked so well that I have decided to forego getting my hair coloured with my hairdresser.

I let her cut it! At first, I didn’t leave it in for long and it still covered my grey roots. I’ve used it three times since then and have left it in for an hour and it does a great job. It does wash out, of course, but I use shampoo and conditioner for coloured hair and I only wash my hair once a week.

I don’t have oily hair and it retains its shape quite well. Sometimes I do wash it twice a week. The colour does last a while. I am also happy that I can find this product in Canada. When I first ordered it, I got it from ebay and it had to be shipped from the U.

I have been using surya henna for about 8 years. I have black hair with grey at the temples. My technique to cover the grey: Apply a generous amount dabbing it on with a small paintbrush and working it into the grey areas.

I use the dark brown and wrap plastic wrap around to cover and keep it from drying out. I cover up with a knitted hat. I don’t color the rest of my hair. I leave it on for 5 hours. Yes, 5. Then rinse it out only with water.

My mom uses this once in a while to conver her Greys. It is super black in color which really doesn’t look that natural but I can’t deny the fact that it conditiones her hair Benazir of henna content in it.

This product contains PPD very dangerous chemical for those with allergy to chemicals in dye. On line it doesn’t mention that contains PPD , but is presented as natural hair dye. It should have a warning.

Waisted money. Went straight to the bin.

I bought the red/burgandy color. It covered my greys but the color was neutral. I think I am either not doing it properly or maybe you need to do it a few times for the color to start showing. Henna is healthy for your hair anyway so I dont mind putting in my hair instead of cancer causing chemicals.

I rotated the 5 MM shampoos for several weeks, plus did the Zen Detox prior to applying the two step grey hair henna process. I wanted to make sure my hair was healthier prior to applying the henna. Here are the steps I used: 1.

Hair had not been chemically treated for approximately 12 weeks. I have medium brown hair with grey coming in mainly on top of scalp and front hairline. 2. Washed hair the night prior to the morning of the red henna application.

2. Used alma powder (2. 5) with whole red henna package. Used distilled water for liquid. Mixed up at night and let sit covered for 12 hours 3. Applied and let sit on hair for 1. 5 hours. Note: The video on website says to leave red on for only 1 hour.

The instructions say 1-3 hours. Sprayed head with fine mist of distilled water to moisten before covering head in plastic wrap and a towel. I have shoulder length fine straighter hair. I did not need the whole package.

4. Rinsed off with not much trouble and my hair was red. The greys were well covered. I actually kind of liked the red color. It did get somewhat darker over the next 72 hours but it was still red. 5.

Mixed up 1/2 package of the light brown henna. Added 1 T of alma, a few drops of Euro oil, and almost 1 cup of warm distilled water. Covered and let sit overnight. 6. Next morning took 1/2 of indigo included in light brown henna package, mixed with distilled water to that yoghurt consistency and added to the light brown henna mixed that was mixed up the night before.

I have a kitchen scale that I used to precisely measure out the henna and indigo into half increments. 7. Applied to hair like I did the red three days earlier however left it on for 3 hours. After rinsing, my hair was now a medium brown with a deep auburn red undertone.

It actually looks great and all grey was covered. I am glad I followed the suggestion to go a shade lighter than what your hair color is. The light brown henna resulted in a darker brown than my original hair color.

Note that I did not wash after each henna application for at least 30 hours. I did apply some Euro oil very sparingly on the pieces of hair that had been previously chemically highlighted. I really like the results but have to admit that the process is a bit time consuming.

I definitely will continue using this method. It feels great to not be using such toxic chemicals on my hair.

I used the red henna as a first step for gray coverage. I used cooled black tea and two tablespoons apple cider vinegar to mix it up, and I let it sit covered in a bowl for 11. 5 hours overnight for dye release because it was a chilly night.

I had help to apply it, it took us about an hour to get it all applied. I used one whole package for my shoulder length hair and it was plenty, my helper glopped it on really thick. I covered it up in plastic and a towel and let it stay on for 5 hours, a little more than the instructions say because I wanted it to be dark.

On the first day it was a beautiful red, and my grays were a bright glowing red! 72 hours later it all darkened up and got more subtle. I like it a lot. Tomorrow I plan to apply light brown henna + amla as a 2nd step for gray coverage, so I’ll see how it goes, I’m guessing it’s not going to be very light though.

One note, the tiny bit of hair that peaked out of the plastic shower cap in front of my ears did not end up with as much color, and I think it is because it dried out since it was exposed and didn’t stay moist the whole time.

Next time I will cover those spots better with plastic wrap too.

I had to leave a review as I’ve read a few that say this product doesn’t cover grays. It absolutely does. Mix the product and let sit for about 30 min or so before applying (I think the Ash Brown needs to be used quicker due to the fact that it contains indigo) Otherwise, you can let the product sit mixed longer.

Wear gloves, this stains like crazy. Apply to hair. It will be very messy but I’m ok with that since it works. Wrap head in plastic wrap or double layer of plastic bags to keep in heat. clip bags at forehead.

I let mine sit on hair for 3 hrs. It was very messy to rinse and took quite awhile to get all the grit out but it definitely covered my grays. I’m 48 and have about 20% gray hair. Lots at temple. This product worked and I’m so happy as I don’t have to use toxic chemicals or spend tons of money.

Super happy with results. I took before and after pics to confirm that it works but have since deleted the photos. Wish I had saved them to use in reviews.

I’ve been coloring my hair with henna powder for years. I used Colora Cream about 10 years ago and I liked it. Decided I was tired of the powder so I ordered four boxes of the brown Colora creme. I used 2 bottles and drenched my hair.

I covered my hair with plastic and I let the henna sit for a little over three hours. Nothing! No color, didn’t cover any grays. It’s as if I just used water in my hair. I can’t tell you how disappointed I am.

Waste of time and money. Just threw out the other 2 boxes.

For my first purchase from MPG these leggings were just ok. The fabric is a bit odd which may be the main reason for the weird fit. The crotch and midsection area are fairly loose compared to my regular leggings.

The colour/print is very flattering though! I purchased size M since I have a small waist and larger hips (40 in) but the waist isn’t tight enough to keep them up during cardio.

This is an amazing product. My hair is naturally dark brown. But I went through a blonde experiment during covid, that was many layers of colors of blonde. I thought that the medium brown would bring the perfect balance in my transition back to my natural color range.

Because of the factors mentioned, this turned my hair orange. The most beautiful shade of orange of the natural organic orange henna color on this site. It was so amazing of a color that I almost kept it.

But it was too strong of a change for me. I then tried the dark brown. Which turned my hair blood red. More on that process under my dark brown review. In short – I think my fault in my trials with henna, is that I love to “gourmet” things up, as my friends say.

I added wonderful combos of the additives. After reading more about the greys turning metallic copper, I learned that just using the product, with maybe a small amount of one additive allows the full product to do its work.

And you do need to do henna first and then the color process in two steps to naturally cover the grey. Thank goodness for working at home. After the mix has processed which I used black tea or coffee to activate it, for both the henna and the hair color, I then I use the following oils in my mixes: castor, amla, jojoboa, and argan with a few drops of 1 or two essential oils.

For all of the fun herbal additives: I recommend these oils mixed in with whatever fun combo to use in between coloring. The additive hair masks are amazing and my hair has never felt better. Good luck!.

I’ve used henna before but was so happy to find such great color options, and ORGANIC (!!!) henna. I was 80% grey in the back and 10% in the front. The medium brown covered 100% of the grey with the first application.

My brown color was unchanged, except for greatly improved softness and shine. I absolutely love it! It looks so beautiful and natural, you’d never believe it was colored. The previous grey now looks like subtle highlights.

It took a full week, and two washes to develop into its true warm brown color, so don’t be too quick to recolor if you’re not 100% happy with it right away. To max the grey coverage, I let the mix sit for 10 hours (stirring occasionally), added 1tsp salt, 1tbsp AC Vinegar, and left it on for 3 hours, wrapped in plastic and a towel.

I rinsed it out and then conditioned twice, as I usually do with henna. I blew it dry with heat to help the color hold, and did not wash it for 2 days. I’m so happy I chose this brand of henna (I researched them all extensively).

I can’t recommend it highly enough.

I love the medium brown color results. After the first application, I felt the grey hair was too orange, so I repeated the process one week later. This got rid of most of the orange and I love the feel of my hair.

The color seemed to fade a little after about a month so I did the roots and focused on the grey areas and was happy to see that the medium brown color returned. There is definitely a fiery undertone, but I am happy with this.

I mixed the henna with a few teaspoons of ACV and water and let it sit 8-10 hours before applying. I left it on my head for the full 3 hours, wrapped in plastic.

I have used henna to color my hair before but the application always needed intense preparation and was a whole lot messy. Khadi (medium brown) natural hair color was effortless to apply. It already has a mix of beautiful color brewing ingredients such as indigo and henna along with other hair protecting ayurvedic ingredients.

I am so pleased with the results. OMG, my washed up faded brown hair has a beautiful cinnamon brown color and gives a brilliant shine. I am also told that using the product (same color) multiple times would give even a richer color.

My greys are covered. My hair fall and dandruff has also reduced. This natural hair color has everything my hair and scalp need. I’ll be also trying some of other Khadi products as well. I’m so impressed with this product!.
