20 Best Height For Tub Spout (2023 Updated)

I tried replacing an old Moen spout that was installed along with the house when it was built back in 1996, thanks to the diverter having gone bad a long time ago and making a horrible squealing noise during showers if anybody turned any other water on (and sometimes even when they didn’t).

I had used an aftermarket “universal” part from Home Depot which had an overly complicated multiple part adapter to get it to go onto the smooth slip-on copper pipe, but that one was needlessly difficult, didn’t form a seal (leaked all over the place very badly) and then just about ruined the copper pipe when I was trying to take it back off.

I gave up on that and went with the real Moen which was more or less the same as the original part, just a slight step up in attractiveness. This one installed with no trouble whatsoever, and apart from a very slight leakage most likely caused by the damage from the universal one (it left grooves in the copper that I couldn’t completely sand out), it’s working well.

The new diverter is great after having spent years listening to the loud noise and watching the water running through the spout while the shower is on. I’m only marking this down a bit because the overall value is not ideal.

There is no reason this part should cost so much. The aftermarket ones which are made with similar quality materials and only problematic in the design rather than the construction are SO much cheaper that I am confident this one is marked up a whole lot and could be sold for much less.

I wouldn’t expect it to be priced right with the generic parts but it also doesn’t need to be 4 times as expensive. Twice as much would still be an improvement. My rating demotion seems appropriate to the overpricing.

Otherwise, good part, and when the other tub spout needs replacing I guess I’ll have to just buy this overpriced but quality part again.

I think this is how the design works: There is a round hole at the part where water comes out. There is a plastic plate with a circular extrusion, with a rubber washer attached to the wall of that circle that matches up with the round hole.

When the faucet is turned on and the diverter is pulled up, water pressure pushes the rubber washer away from the plastic plate, so the washer pushes against the round hole and seals the hole, so water goes up the tube into the shower instead.

It’s probably dripping because the circular part on the plastic isn’t exactly centered to the hole when pulled all the way up. If I push the diverter down a bit after pulling it up, the dripping seems to stop.

But at around two and a half times the price of the AS diverter, I kinda expected it to seal perfectly without any fiddling. The only differences are the minor aesthetic difference you can see from the pictures of the two items, and the attachment mechanism.

This one uses a guillotine-like clamp that distributes the clamping pressure to both the top and bottom side of the copper pipe, while the AS one relies on just the point where the set screw digs into the copper tube.

The attachment at the back seems to be made with much higher tolerances than the AS one though, as it requires some bit of fiddling to line things up perfectly before it can slip onto the tube, while the AS one slips on effortlessly.

If you prefer the mounting mechanism of this one much more than the AS one, and think the mounting is worth the additional $15 plus tax, then go with it. Otherwise just get the AS one, as they have the same performance after installation.

Hope this is helpful, since sizing seems to be very confusing. I know nothing about plumbing, but was able to replace this spout myself quite easily. The following info would have come in handy when trying to decide which spout I needed, though: 1.

The length of the spout from end to end is 5. 5 inches (see picture below). Yes, this fact is in the product description, but I’m making this clarification because you never know which measurements the merchants are giving you.

2. The pipe sticking out from your wall must be 4. 0 inches in length. This is the distance from the flange to the end of the pipe (or from the wall if you don’t have a flange). I’m guessing that your pipe can be up to 4.

25 inches long, since in my case not all of the thread was used and it could have been tightened to go in about a quarter of an inch further (see picture below). 3. This spout will fit a 1/2 inch pipe with IPS (Iron Pipe Size) threads.

The 1/2 inch refers to the INSIDE diameter of your pipe. In case you’re wondering, your pipe doesn’t have to be made out of iron, it can be PVC, copper, or what have you, as long as it has the IPS threads (I think this is the most common type).

4. All you will need is a pipe wrench and some teflon tape. Or you can use any type of tool that will help you tighten the spout. You might even be able to do it with your hands. I’m giving this spout 5 stars because of its looks and ease of installation.

The price seems to be about the same as everywhere else. As far as durability, I have no idea, since I just installed the thing a few nights ago, but will update if necessary. This review applies to a Moen 3800 Diverter Spout in Chrome purchased here on 31-Jan-2018.

Although I received my product with one of the components missing, I used a work around to fix it. The item is robust and a great replacement for the original manufacturer’s item. Very good luster and the price was far lesser than what I would pay at the home center.

It is a great value for my home improvement project. It is the same exact one that the local home center sells. I didn’t like the EZ plastic attachment they include, so I ended up getting the torch out and sweating on a 1/2″ male.

I have a rental unit where I decided to spend a bit more on a tub spout from a different well-known company, and it failed only after a month. Luckily, I had one of these handy and had my plumber install the unit.

I purchased this product to replace a leaky tub diverter spout. This one was easy to install and works well. It drips just a little bit in shower mode when used with a 1. 5 gpm shower head. I like that the diverter pull tab has a rubber gasket at the bottom, so it doesn’t make a harsh clink when it drops back down.

I bought this to complete a bathroom job after having zero luck at my local big box stores. Item arrived sooner than expected and is really a beautiful piece. It installed easily and still looks exactly the same over a month later.

The finish is a perfect match to the rest of my oil-rubbed bronze items and is a very high quality piece. I would definitely recommend purchasing from these guys, you can’t go wrong.

This spout is missing an adapter that is must have item. I can not use it with out it. I can not buy this adapter without the spout. It must be sold together. I will return the spout.

Appears much better build quality compared to the moen spout I had to replace that was barely 5 years old. Fits and works perfectly.

It looks nice and was an easy install but it’s been in less than a year and the diverter is already allowing water to pass.

While not inexpensive, the original product rather than a universal product was much easier to install and higher quality.

Cheap construction. Also it was defective. I tested it but didn’t install it. When in the diverter mode it leaks by like hell. I found that it leaked so bad because the stainless steel spring that pushes the black rubber cup washer out against the flat surface with the hole to keep water from leaking by was missing.

Someone at the factory forgot to put the spring in the cup washer. So I bought a cheaply made spout that had a critical part missing.

I bought this Delta “RP3914” bathtub faucet because it looked like the one we wanted when we remodeled our bathroom. It looked great by picture, and I have to admit I was impressed that it had a brass connection.

no plastic connection ! I have my own well for water. It puts out 10 gal. per minute without any restrictions applied. This new Delta spout puts out about 1/4 the amount of water flow compared to our old 25 year old spout.

very frustrating. my plumber was even astonished. Where are the specs that should tell/warn about the low/slow flow ?? What gives Delta the right to tell me (or anyone) how much water flow I should have ?? If you don’t care if it takes all day to fill your bath tub, you may enjoy this faucet !.

I’ve been using Delta products for over 30 years. This is a hunk of grunt. Cheap plastic inside. The spout on the side won’t swivel. It snapped apart when I hand tightened it. Nearly forced water into the hole by my pipe.

Severely disappointing that Delta would make such garbage – and then charge over double what lesser brands that are made better charge. Shameful.

I have a late 1980’s home and the rub spout was delta and it looked identical to this one. The old one I unscrewed to make sure I knew what I was getting into but the photo on Home Essentials Direct leaves some details out of the item for sale.

The brass fitting if you have a delta faucet setup is inside the spout. If you have the brass screw on piece then this is the right item. It comes with the spout. The job if you have this setup takes 5 minutes to replace.

Have some teflon tape and pliers to remove the old brass fitting. I used a little silicon grease on the o-ring when installing. Everything was smooth and no issues. No more squealing leaking faucet when showering.

The old faucet was also plastic in design so those complaining about metal vs plastic must not know back in the 1980’s this was the same deal. I’m just glad they have them still so I can clean up the appearance of the tub.

Perfect fit for replacing Delta tub spouts. If you have Delta hardware in your shower be aware that the universal kits will not work with it, you need the actual Delta part. This one feels a lot more sturdy than the universal ones anyways and was only $2 more expensive.

Get the right part and the job of changing the tub spout will take about 90 seconds.

Awesome product with perfect for for a tub spout. If you have whats called a “pipe thread” fitting coming out of the wall for a spout (instead of a 1/2″ unthreaded copper), this is the spout needed. Threads perfect.

This Moen tub spout is probably one of the cheapest made basic tub spouts on the market being made out of almost entirely plastic. Only the pull rod and part of the clamping mechanism is metal. Even so, it is unusually expensive compared to other brands like Kohler and American Standard that are made out of mostly metal(zinc pot metal unfortunately).

Delta is the only other major brand that makes plastic tub spouts. I would expect this spout to be half of it’s price given the inexpensive materials used to construct it. In any case, being a slip on type to be used with a 1/2″ copper tube protruding from the wall it is an easy installation.

An allen wrench is needed to snug the screw, not over tighten it, so the spout can’t move on the copper tube. The one nice stand out to this Moen design is their clamping system makes it all but impossible to overtighten and blow thru the copper with the allen screw as the clamp surrounds the pipe evenly.

The most important part of the installation is making sure that the copper tube is level coming out of the wall and also not angled to one side or the other. Sliding a 1/2″ diameter steel rod or tube inside the protruding copper tube will allow you to forcibly bend the copper slightly in the wall a bit to get it straight and plumb(copper will give a little).

If you do this make sure whatever you put inside the copper tube has little to no play or you will deform the copper making spout installation impossible. It’s important that you have 3″ or less copper protruding from the wall before you put the spout on.

You also should sand the copper tube clean and use a dab of clear silicone grease(o-ring/dielectric grease) to lube the entire copper tube so the o-ring inside the spout slides easily onto the copper.

Oh my goodness how easy this was!! It took me a while to figure out the following, one there is a hex head screw holding the faucet cover on and mine was filled with caulk from the construction plumber.

After finding this was my exact replacement, I unscrewed the screw tightener on the underside by the wall, actually I loosened and twisted it around so I could see better, removed the old screw and yanked real hard straight forward revealing a 1/2 inch copper tubing 3 inches long.

It was easier to push on the new one, insert my hex key wrench in the screw and tighten it. No need for putty this is a self sealing design and has an o-ring inside that seals against the copper pipe.

Your done now, pick up your tools out of the tub and turn on the water, then pull up the diverter knob and there should be no leaks.

Our shower over tub is actually over a Jacuzzi tub so we needed a longer than normal spout to get the water into the tub. We had been using a normal size with an extension on it which was less than attractive, but it worked.

Our choices were limited because our bathroom fixtures are all brass. This spout is long enough to work on its own and looks good. However, we use the shower much more often than the tub. On the old spout we could keep the lever in the up position that made the shower work.

This one automatically drops back down when the water is turned off. That may not be a problem in most cases but our “doorway” to the tub/shower is fairly distant from the spout. That means one has to step into the shower with the water running into the tub, pull up the lever and prepare to be blasted from the shower by the cold water in the pipe.

Not pleasant. My husband created a “fix” so that the lever would always be up, but that means there is always some water leaking out of the spout instead of going through the shower. To use the tub, more force than normal will be needed to push the lever back down.

Not perfect, but it works.

Fits my over-sized tub perfectly! Great finish! It works a lot better than I thought it would based upon the method of attachment. This is the first time I have used this style of faucet with a tub valve.

I must say, it was the easiest install ever.

I find Moen products are just garbage. Our Tub faucet diverter broke so we needed a replacement. After some looking we found our model (the Eva). A replacement kit with all the trim was $90 but we don’t need to replace anything but the tub so we went with this one to save a few dollars.

Still way over priced. It should be maybe $20. Other than that I can’t complain. Easy to install, perfect match for our existing tub. And it doesn’t seem to leak. Meh.

It was very simple to install and a nice design. Moen’s Old World Bronze is a unique color finish. Absolutely stunning!!

All my faucets and shower/tub fixtures are Moen. Their warranty is great. This was my last item in my house that wasn’t but now is.

I tried to install this on an unthreaded pipe. This “universal” kit contains all the parts you would need to mount the spout on an unthreaded or threaded pipe. The instructions indicate that for an unthreaded mount, the pipe coming out of the wall should be only 1″ in length, so I cut my pipe to that length.

There are a series of parts to use, namely a brass adapter to push onto the spout and then a set screw to hold it in place. Then there is a plastic extender that allows you to screw the spout (which has threads inside) onto the extender, which is in turn screwed into adapter.

You first have to push the adapter onto the pipe as far as it will go. I did that, and despite the pipe coming out from the wall exactly 1 inch, assembling everything left a giant gap of about 1/2″ between the spout and the wall.

So I removed the adapter, recut the pipe shorter, and remounted the brass adapter. Unfortunately, the set screw tends to deform the copper pipe, and make remounting the adapter problematic, to say the least.

All told, the adapter did not mount, and the copper pipe coming out of my wall is now too short and deformed to be usable. I will have to call a plumber to have a spout/diverter to be professionally mounted.

The bottom line is that the design of this universal spout with diverter, when mounting on an unthreaded pipe, is poor. What should have been a 10 minute, nearly toolless job for me will now require a lot of money and a professional to come to my house to fix.

Stay away things called “universal” – they are usually overly complex and have too many design compromises!.

This worked as a replacement for existing Tub Spout. This Peerless Universal will fit most spout pipes, threaded or non-threaded. Take note: If you have a smooth copper pipe coming out of the wall, and it is more than one inch you’ll need to cut some of the the pipe off.

Cutting the pipe is easy. *Buy a small pipe cutter at WalMart too. (https://www. walmart. com/ip/Copper-Pipe-Cutters-Plumbing-Plumbers-Tubing-Cutting-Tool/179599073) Tighten the screw and that applies pressure to the smooth pipe; twist the cutter 360 degrees several times, tighten and repeat.

You continue this process until the pipe is cut. You will then use an abrasive pad to remove any burs from the pipe, another simply task. Takes about 2 mins. The brass adapter (supplied) that goes on the copper pipe is a tight fit, so be patient.

I used a twisting motion and inward pressure to make it fit. There is a rubber or silicon ‘O’ ring in the brass adapter -you’ll want to fit the copper pipe all the way to the ‘O’ ring. You’ll want the supplied brass adapter to be almost flush with the wall after it is on fully, so cut copper pipe accordingly.

You will then add the longest plastic adapter to the brass fitting and screw on the spout until it meets the wall. All instructions are in the package as well.

This is a terrible spout. It worked well for about 2 weeks, but now when I pull up the shower knob, it no longer seals off the spout and diverts to the shower. About half of my water still comes out of the spout.

When I removed the spout, I could see that the O-ring doesn’t line up with the opening to seal it off. Piece of junk. No wonder it’s only $10. Wish I still had the original packaging so I could return this.

Omg. I tried another brand pull down cut off tub spout. It lasted about a month before it’s o ring blew out and more water than ever was leaking. Tried sinking around with replacement prints. Nothing worked.

Tried making my family leave it in it’s closed position. Not practice. Finally sucked it up and spent the extra $20 to get This from Delta. I do wish the inside was not plastic. But the body is solid metal and the part that screws onto the stub out nipple is solid brass.

There is no set screw to secure it. Figure one of the kids will learn they can rotate it by hand one day. But the thing works. No water leaks and when the shower is shut off it teleases to let the water drain.

Actuating it for shower is super easy. I believe I will be happy with this.

Couldn’t find it at Home Depot or Lowes with the top shower diverter pull but you hand it – looks and works great!

I first bought the same spout without a diverter at first. I thought my shower valve would handle it. We decided to have add the diverter after all. It was an easy swap. The diverter works for my tub and handheld shower.

My rainfall shower head is still on the shower valve. The construction is great, metal, not plastic or cheap. Loved the 1st version and kept it to use in another bath. When there is ample pressure the diverter works as expected.

Brushed nickel color is pretty but it has a gold undertone. Doesn’t match my other fixtures. Sorry I have to return it.

Diverter didn’t work correctly and the finish was markedly different than the shower handle from the same line.

We had to replace our diverter and chose this one. It is attractive and does it job. Easy to install.

This spout is unique and stunning and very solidly constructed. However, there are issues with the chrome finish. The first one I got scratched instantly after wiping with a clean microfiber cloth. Signature hardware graciously replaced it, but the replacement item had a fine scratch on it out of the box! My project is already roughed in with this item in mind, so I’ll have to take my chances and hope it doesn’t scratch worse, but there really seem to be issues with the chrome finish being defective and not standing up to normal handling.

I purchased this for a master bath remodel. There were several waterfall styles available from varies vendors but I went with the Knox spout because of the reviews. So glad I did. It’s perfect!

We are in the process of building a house so this was not installed. We purchased a few different tub spouts and picked what would fit our vision. This one is very nice but my wife wanted a different aesthetic with respect to the flow so we decided on another S.

I had this pullup diverter installed for my bathtub. The pull up diverter doesn’t divert the water unless it’s repetitively pressed or pressed for ten seconds. I’ve used way cheaper models that work better.

We bought this for our main bathroom renovation. It looks very elegant and contemporary on our marble feature shower wall. It is a premium quality chrome plated brass spout, which has a real solid feel to it.

Very nice durable tub spout. The matte black is beautiful. The spout does have a little weight to it. Excellent addition to my Delta shower system. Very modern.

It’s a little flimsy. Not worth the price. I was lucky to get a used one in good shape. It’s in an old bathroom so I wasn’t worried to much.
