20 Best Head Halter For Dogs (2023 Updated)

If you have a reactive dog/dog that pulls on the lead you NEED to get this head collar. I have a 7 month old lab. She is a good girl, but she is very reactive to other dogs and people. I had tried, and tried, and tried, to get her to walk nicely on the lead.

I tried so many different training techniques, nothing seemed to work. Now she is getting bigger and stronger, and knowing she’s only going to carry on getting even bigger and stronger, it was getting really hard to control her on her normal lead and collar/harness.

Walks were beginning to become a nightmare, and something that I started to dread. I am SO GLAD I found this Halti head collar. I follow a dog training page on Facebook, and they recommended this for reactive dogs, and WOW.

The difference in walking her when she has this head collar on is amazing. I’ve only had it for a week, she still gets excited when she sees other dogs/people, but she doesn’t pull to get to them, or try to lunge herself at them now, she just stays by my side.

It’s really amazing, and SO worth it! Small price to pay if you want your dog to walk nicely next to you, imo. I got a size 2, as the 3 was a bit too big around her snout (obviously she’s not fully grown yet) and that part of the collar isn’t adjustable.

But the strap that goes around the back of the head is adjustable, so you can tighten or slacken that to fit your doggy just right. I would recommend measuring your dog before you buy so you have a better idea of what size to get.

And just a tip, if you’re struggling to get your dog to take to it – reward them with a few of their favourite treats (or a little bit of their normal food/biscuits/etc) as you’re putting it on their face, and after you’ve finished putting it on.

And this will associate the head collar with a good thing for them, which is their food or a treat, and hopefully that makes it a bit easier for you and for your doggy :).

I bought two different Face Halters: The Halti, which was a replacement for a much older style Halti. The other – “Dogs My Love” brand face halter. I have a 12-month old GSD (german shepherd dog). Both were well-made, and both were close in cost.

I’d double-check the measurements, but I must’ve mis-applied the measurement and ordered one-size up with the Halti, thinking there were more possible adjustments. It only strap which is adjustable is the one that secures the halter behind the head.

It was just sloppy-large on him, whereas the “Dogs my love” brand fit him spot-on, with a little room to grow into it. I’m keeping that lesser-known brand and returning the Halti. It’s a good product, I wouldn’t be afraid to try it – it’s well-made with double stitching and a padded nose.

Both brands had a nicely-padded nose band.

Tessa was a rescue – border collie mix with significant pulling issues and dog reactiveness. 3 years I tried trainers and watched tons of training videos and tried harnesses,prong collar to no avail.

A trainer even told me she may not ever be able to stop her behavior since spending her first 6 mos in a shelter. I’m here to say this halter works. She doesn’t or rather can’t pull. When she sees another dog, she wants to go to it but can only wiggle her head in objection to the halter.

I get her focus back to the treats and her heeling and no further issue. No more getting pulled across the yard and down to the ground. I can’t wait until the day she is completely off the halter. We have some time to get there.

I’ve tried everything with our German Shepherd who likes to pull. I understand training is absolutely necessary to ensure polite walks on a lead. It’s good to have a training tool that is effective too and I think the Canny Collar has done a good job so far.

Unlike a head halti, it doesn’t pull from the bottom underneath the chin. Instead it acts like check collar but applies GENTLE pressure on the muzzle. Our dog gets the message immediately and slows down or walks by our side.

The product is also versatile in that you can slip it off the muzzle and use it as a general collar with the clips included. Perfect for walks and when it’s time to play in the park. A lot more easier to put it back on that try put a head halti on when your dog is huffing and puffing after running around.

Have tried numerous head type halters over the years as prefer having control of my dog’s head as she is very reactive. However with the rest she became a champ at a one paw swipe getting the nose piece off so I have much less control.

She has yet to try to get the nose piece of the Canny product off. I do use a shorter leash so most of the time the nose piece stays in place and she’s able to do her sniffing without a problem. But there have been times there’s been enough slack for it to fall off her nose so 4 stars.

Do like that it comes with an actual collar part as well for back up.

My Markus is a 165 lb Great Dane. His back stands above my hip line. So he is pretty big. And a puller. I have tried so many different styles of head collars and they all just are not worth the money.

The first time I put this on him and started to walk, he still tried to pull some (its just what he does) but he didn’t fight it. It centered behind his neck and stayed put. The nose part didn’t ride up into his eyes or rub wrong on his face.

It makes it so much easier to walk him now.

I’d been shopping around for a no pull harness, but they either cause pain or they don’t really make a difference. This one is my favorite! If my dog pulls, it tightens, but then loosens back up as soon as he stops tugging.

He is a one year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with boundless energy. He still pulls, but not so hard that I feel that the leash might break, so I am happy! It’s adjustable at the neck, but he is still pretty small so I’ve left it as is for now, and there is also an adjustment for the legs, so the harness won’t get loose enough for him to step out of.

It attaches from the ring at the top of the harness to the leash, and the top part of the harness is still small enough to weave through the opening in his jacket, so I just push it through the hole in the jacket and it’s snug, but still works fine.

It’s a really great fit!.

This product is of no use for large breed dogs. (In my case, a Dane. ) The clip loop at the front has too much freedom, resulting in the leash tether-point running from either shoulder. This offers some sideways control of the dog, but not the advertised front control from the chest.

The buckles don’t hold the harness well and so slacken instantly. Again, this reduces the effectiveness of the harness in controlling the dog. The product lasted less than 6 months before breaking. (The stitching holding the tether-point broke.

) If I could rate 0 stars, I would. Not recommended. Dont waste your money.

We have two large dogs and both are pullers. We tried the Halti harness on our youngest first, a 15-month-old 84 lb. Great Pyrenees/Lab X who is freakishly strong and likes to take ME for a walk. The change was instantaneous.

The moment I put it on it’s like he knew his pulling days were over. He’s gone from pulling to walking next to me, if he wanders off course a gentle tug brings him back in line. We liked the Halti harness so much the next day we bought a second for our 4-year-old Swiss Shepherd and now walking our two dogs is much more enjoyable.

Don’t know if it was really necessary but I bought this as an added safety measure – it makes me feel more confident anyway!

So glad I bought this worth every penny , my dog is very secure with this link which attaches to both collar and harness. If you have a Houdini dog like mine who , up to now , has managed to reverse out of his harness then I can definitely recommend this fab little gadget.

I purchased this for my large 10 month old English Shepherd (68 lbs. ). The Walk About Head Halter is very attractive and sturdy. The part which goes around his muzzle does not stay in a locked position until he pulls on it.

By then the loop has loosened so much that it does not control the direction his head can turn. (The way it’s supposed to work is that when he pulls on the lead his head gets turned around towards you and eventually he realizes that it is futile to try to charge ahead!) Instead, because the muzzle loosens up, he may use all his strength to pull me if he spots a deer or other animal before I do.

(You might notice that Cesar Millan often uses this method) By then it is too late to control him by snapping his mind into calm, submissive state. He is still very much an alert, playful but keenly smart puppy & will be for many months to come.

(He is the 8th large dog I’ve trained since reaching adulthood-I long ago learned that prong collars can harm a dog).

I like that this head halter can be used as an alternative to a dog muzzle but is more humane. The halter is made from a flexible, adjustable nylon weave, and provides a soft, durable, dependable method to restrain my dogs and prevent him from jumping on other people or pulling me after passing cars while still allowing him to move relatively freely and drink water or eat a treat as needed.

I do like the wider version but I’ve not seen anywhere else. I did start my dogs incessantly pulling off then he was doing. he still pulls it off sometimes though. I’m thinking about getting the smaller size even though with measurements this was the correct size.

I wish that this came in coastal blue solid, was machine washable (it smells and I’m sure it’s unsanitary because it’s near the mouth), way smaller more ergonomical clip fastener for comfort.

I was very excited about this purchase but Bertie was most definitely not. He couldn’t figure out why he should have donuts in his line of vision that could not be eaten and immediately started scratching at the nose strap with his paw and easily finagled his way out of it.

In my excitement I opened the package and started trying to put the gentle leader on him only to become stumped by the complex design (I have a PhD but it is in a field unrelated to dog gentle leaders).

I looked at the packaging and saw no pictures and only tiny font that I could not be bothered to read until five minutes into our walk when I figured out that the method I had cobbled together from the pictures was most definitely not working.

No longer having the piece of paper with tiny print on it with us, I looked up instructions of Wikihow (which upon further perusal after our walk match the instructions on Chewy, why those could not be put in an instructional series of graphics on the blank space on the back of the sheet of paper that came with it, I do not know).

This worked better but I still am mystified by the snap below the latch. Why anyone would put plastic that feels that flimsy anywhere near a species that is known for its willingness to chew anything and everything I do not know.

I am not sure if the snap is broken, naturally weak, or I am obtuse but I cannot figure out how to make it stay put. Bertie started to get used to it eventually but still managed to get out from the nose strap twice more on our walk because the snap did not work (which was no more than 20 minutes total and over the course of which I managed to brainstorm several things that would have made better snaps than the piece of plastic provided, like a paperclip, a twist tie, a rubber band, a hair tie, or, on the makers’ end, one of those things used to tighten sweatshirt hoods–why that was not the first solution is really bewildering in all honesty).

Bertie would rate this a 0 if he were able to write Chewy reviews. I, being slightly more generous, will give it a two for being a cool concept and because I think the donuts are cute (which is the worst reason to get stars ever, but whatever).

I can’t remember exactly what year we would have gotten our first gentle leader, but I’ll always remember the doggo we got it for and what a life changer it was!! He was 120 pounds of pure muscle and we.

had. tried. everything. Group training, private training, and all the types of collars I would never use today even if I didn’t have this amazing option (choke, pinch, shock…). Our vet had even recommended having a horse halter made for him.

And then a friend suggested a gentle leader. Overnight, we went from dreading the walk and only taking them when the strongest in the family was available, to myself, the kids and even my parents being able to EASILY, with one hand and no strength required, walk this dog who literally dragged me across a soccer field once when I slid on wet grass but didn’t want to let go of his leash.

It was probably right around twenty years ago, and sadly Bear has long ago been to the rainbow bridge. But we’ve had a few other large, strong pullers since and thankfully we knew from the beginning how to make walks fun and bearable for everyone.

I only wish it hadn’t taken SO long for there to be some collars with a little design and color other than the same solid colors for so many years. And I can’t lie, I sure wish there were more choices than there are.

But thankfully the gentle leader is still available. I’ve worried at times when it’s been hard to find at stores in our area – but no matter how many other harnesses I’ve tried (and there have been quite a few – mostly looking to try to raise the fashion game a little or avoid the initial struggle to get it off), nothing has worked like the gentle leader and I always just get another one.

Please keep making and PLEASE keep increasing the color/pattern options.

I have a Bluetick hound who is relatively well trained. Despite this, she is a hound and can be stubborn. If she sees a cat, good luck. I have tried walking her with a collar, which she can slip right out of, no matter how snug it is.

I have another harness and that helped, but she could still be hard to control. She came from the prison pups program with one of these harnesses on. I know she walked well in the program. After putting the harness on correctly (it was backwards and upside down when I got her), I was amazed at the instant turn around in her behavior.

The harness is a little difficult to figure out at first but each strap is labeled with the location of where it should go. Just remember to unbuckle the black strap to take it off and it is ready to use.

It may take a little trial and error to get it adjusted correctly but it is worth the effort. It also washes like a dream. I do wish the leash was rounded instead of flat. It is wide, because of the size of the dog.

It is uncomfortable to hold across the palm of my hand. I hold the loop in one hand, which is fine, but I hold take the slack of the leash up in my other hand. That is where it is uncomfortable. I am a small woman so someone with bigger hands might not have this issue.

This product was repurchased a couple of years after the first pairs were bought which were given to other dog owners. I decided to buy another pair for my dogs to stop them pulling when we go somewhere new.

It’s fantastic for training and works a treat. Good quality too! I always recommend using training halter to other dog owners as a tip for training.

Excellent product but had to return as too big for my cockapoos. The smaller size was too small. Therefore, accurate measurements of dog are necessary.

Great halter that seems to work. The only problem with it is that I went by the recommendation and purchased the XL version for a Labrador and it is too big. I like the fact that it is on slider and loosens and tightens as the dog pulls and loosens when he comes to heel.

With it being too big he does tend to be able to get out of it but with it being attached to his collar it is no problem and he still cant escape – just need to convince him to let me put it back on! Will probably buy the smaller size and see how that goes.

I sort of love and hate this collar. I love that this collar is incredibly adjustable, one side of the neck strap is a fixed length, and the other side as well as the nose loop can be adjusted all the way down to nothing, so Brisbane can wear a medium, a large, and possibly even an extra-large Gentle Leader.

I love that there are only two loops, so it is relatively simple to put on. At the same time, I hate that most dogs fight this collar even when it has been carefully introduced. I hate seeing long leashes and even retractables attached to these.

I hate seeing dogs back out of them at the worst possible time, and I hate how pretty much everyone has them sized wrong. The neck loop is supposed to be very tight, so tight even a single finger can’t be slid under it.

Most dogs hate this, and most of their owners do, too. The thing is, the neck strap needs to be super tight, sitting right up behind the ears, in order to keep the nose loop in place. If the neck strap is too loose, the nose loop can slip off, and most people respond by making the nose loop too tight.

A correctly-fitted Gentle Leader should fit tightly around the neck, but very loose around the nose. The plastic adjuster on the nose loop should be positioned so that it is barely not loose. Most dogs will not be able to back out of the collar when it is super tight, but I use a martingale or slip collar as a backup in case they do manage to escape the Gentle Leader.

Pros: Easy to find, easy to use, and each size fits a wide range of dogs. Definitely the least confusing and most user-friendly head collar. Cons: Most dogs hate it at first, many continue to hate it even when properly introduced.

Difficult to adjust correctly, and may be uncomfortable for the dog when the neck strap is tight enough. No backup or safety feature in case the dog backs out of the collar. An unlined nose loop tends to rub marks on dogs who wear the Gentle Leader often.

Bottom Line: There are head collars I like better than the Gentle Leader. There are head collars that many dogs like better than the Gentle Leader. However, this is still my best bet for introducing people to the whole concept without overwhelming them with a tangle of straps.

We have two very active dogs, a border collie and an Australian shepherd. I have use a harness when I walk them because they both have a tendency to pull on the leash some. Putting the harness on can be a pain though.

So I figured I’d give this a try. Our Australian shepherd hated it. I followed all the instructions, and it fit really well, but she spent most of her time trying to get the piece that ran over the top of her nose off.

She was not use to something like that at all. I figured I’d keep trying, but it was a definite fail for her. She loves to go for walks, but the minute she saw me get out the Gentle Leader; she went and got in her crate.

Our border collie is a bit older and after about the fourth time wearing it; he tolerated it. He would still try to put his head down every now and then and try to mess with the piece going over his nose.

It believe that an item like this would work best if they were started with it as a puppy. Then they would be use to it and fine with wearing it. The instructions were easy to follow as far as fitting it to the dog.

My only issue was how hard it was to close the silver tab that is under their chin. It was very stiff and I don’t have a ton of strength in my hands, which made it really difficult to close it. Once closed though, it was very secure.

We have a 7 month old Great Dane puppy who has been on a Martingale collar since we brought her home. The old collar was fine when she was smaller but now that she’s around 80 lbs and very strong, it was harder for my wife and younger son to maintain control on walks when she would get distracted or just become particularly rambunctious.

A friend had recommended the Gentle Leader so we decided to give it a try and walks have become much more controlled and enjoyable. She didn’t love it at first and I think we could have avoided the transition by just starting her on this instead of the Martingale in the first place but- with a few treats to ease the process- she got used to this collar in just a few days and now it’s just natural.

Rather than having to fight the strength of the entire big, strong dog, the Gentle Leader gives you control of her head and, as a result, her attention. Now when she’s distracted, it just takes a gentle tug on the collar to bring her back to focus on us.

Highly recommend.

A bit of a two sided review, but here we go. I like the design in the way it fits on my dog (Great Dane) when sized correctly it doesn’t shift around or cause skin irritation/bruising. It’s very simple to put on (a lot simpler than other head collars I’ve seen/tried).

He adjusted to it like a champ and doesn’t pull at all anymore which used to be a problem. So it certainly gets the job done and for that I’d recommend this product. My concern is the longevity of the product.

I’ve had mine for a few months and haven’t had issues, however I keep it out of reach when not in use and when we walk I don’t let him bite/claw at it. Not hard to do since he really isn’t bothered by it.

But, I can tell the material is not very durable so if you have an intense puller I would not rely on this on it’s own; it really wouldn’t take much for a dog to break out of. I don’t have a problem with it because I walk my boy with double leashes.

One leash is attached to the headcollar as a guide, the second leash is loosely held and attached to his chest harness as a backup in case the headcollar fails/breaks. I’m satisfied with this product because it meets my need, however it may not be the right solution for everyone.

I love the halti for training dogs to walk nicely on the leash; used it with all my GSDs and those that I fostered without any issues (size 3). This is the first time I used a size 2 for a smaller dog.

I was disappointed in the sewing/strength of the under-the-chin strap. My small dog was able to bust it, twice. I made/sewn my own loop, works better. Overall, I would absolutely recommend this for training anyone’s pet to walk like a lady/gentleman on a leash.

I have found this to work better than any choker chain, prong, martingale, or other devices. Dogs don’t like it, however, I can have them walking, pull-free, within 10 minutes. Also, I would recommend the company review the strength/sewing of the smaller sizes.

We have an 11 month old Sprocker who pulled like a train and nothing we tried was working. We were getting to the point where we wondered if we needed to wait for him to calm down and mature. When we found this lead it sounded too good to be true, but for £13 thought it was worth a try, especially after reading the impressive reviews.

Two days later, we’ve not only received our order (the next day) but our lovely boy no longer pulls, our loose lead walks are exactly that, and are a pleasant experience, as opposed to something to endure on our way to the common.

We will be so happy if we can help other, desperate, dog owners who after reading this decide to give it a go. Truly it’s the best £13 we’ve spent in a very long time!.

Very happy with this lead for my strong and reactive working cocker 6 month old puppy. I have tried several other leads and harnesses and wished I bought this first. It appears to have a calming effect on the dog and on me!) and has made dog walking a much less frustrating affair.

If you are struggling to keep control of you dog whilst walking, and the slip lead positioned high on the neck isn’t working, then I highly recommend this figure of 8 lead.

Purchased this as a last resort after trying so many leads and harnesses on my 11month old cockapoo. Well all I can say is wow. Instant result!!!. I’ve been suffering with my shoulders and neck from her constant pulling and it wasnt enjoyable taking her out on walks.

But as soon as I put it on it was like magic. Really impressed and would highly recommend. One happy owner.

Too cheaply made. My German Shepherd broke through it maybe 5 or 6 times calling it quits for that. DON’T USE IT NEAR A BUSY ROAD! Maybe ok for a somewhat of a puller but when you have the true definition of a REAL PULLER, DON’T USE! It works great initially until the cheaply made thing breaks loose.

I CAN’T TRUST IT!.

I have had my Wheaten Terrier for 4 years. She pulled so hard when walking that I fell once and hated to walk with her. I finally tried the gentle leader. it is amazing. She doesn’t seem to mind and stopped pulling right away.

I am going to order another as we may wear this out. Now a pleasure to walk.

I’ve got a 5 month old rescue pup who has never been on a lead before and used to pull like crazy, weaving all over the place which is incredibly frustrating even for the most patient of owners! So a dog trainer suggested I buy a gentle leader.

Once i fitted it and my dog got used to having it on, I braved the dreaded walk and my word what a difference! No pulling, no weaving, just a nice calm walk to heel! Highly recommend this Gentle leader.

Good value, good quality and makes for an easier stress free walk. Can’t wait to carry on our lead training with it.

Our 7 month-old Lab/Boxer mix does well not pulling on walks, until she sees a squirrel/bird/person/bicycle, and then it’s chaos. She’s not aggressive, just very, very enthusiastic. One day she lunged at a little boy and his grandmother out on a morning walk, and they RAN AWAY.

I was so mortified, I decided right then and there that something needed to be done. After a neighbor told me about her harness she used for her dogs, I looked up this harness. I thought it was surely too good to be true.

people reporting near instant results. But this thing seriously works. Indie wasn’t a fan of it when we put it on. leaning against walls to itch herself, etc. But she’s gotten used to it after a week.

And the pulling has almost entirely stopped. She’s a “teenager” so of course she still has her reactive moments, but she’s so, so much better. I did see the reviews with the pets who had rashes/abrasions after one or a few uses of the harness, so I purposefully kept it a little loose across her chest and under her “armpits” so it’s not rubbing her skin.

Haven’t noticed a detriment to the harness’s performance and it hasn’t harmed her in the least. Finally, even though I measured her girth, I still ended up with the wrong size. Chewy not only replaced it with the right size and took care of shipping, but left the wrong-sized harness with me to donate to my local shelter.

Worked very well to keep control of my 7-month-old, 50+ pound Shepherdoodle and discourage him from pulling. It was also relatively easy to fit properly on him, unlike a lot of other harnesses with front clips.

The harness seems a little complicated at first but you get the hang of it after a couple days (D-ring in front, the black strap goes underneath and behind the legs). The reason I am giving it only 4 stars instead of 5 is that it wore out and broke after a few weeks even though he didn’t chew on it.

That may be partly my fault because I didn’t take the advice of some of the other reviewers here and I was not disciplined about taking the harness off between walks. But the manufacturers need to use better material or reinforce its weak points or something.

I will still get another one because, all things considered, it’s not too expensive and in all other respects it’s better than other harnesses I have gotten for my dog. But I will be taking it off between walks in the future and I will keep a backup harness in reserve.

This harness has definitely reduced my anxious little dog’s pulling on walks. If we walk alone, he even acts like he’s been to a trainer– walks right next to me the whole time. The way the harness is designed works best if your dog is walking next to you, or just a few feet in front.

If they’re farther away than that, the harness is against their side. My dog does a neat little dance move where he either walks completely sideways like a little tap dancer, or just tries to walk with his butt out to one side.

Any excess strap at the front of the harness pulls out to the side as well. The asymmetrical nature of the harness is so horrifying to my FIL that he puts the harness on upside down, with the lead coming from behind the shoulders.

This works in a pinch. Overall, this harness has improved our walks.

I have two large silver labradors who get at least one walk daily–Bruiser is almost 5 years old, 90lbs, and has been an angel on leash since he was a puppy. My Rambo is 3 years old, 78 lbs, and I’ve been consistently working with him on leash walking since he was a puppy.

He is atrocious on leash despite trying obedience classes, clicker training, various styles of harnesses, and various training methods. He is a little leash reactive, highly prey driven, and likes to move very fast.

He has begun pulling away from dog walkers which was the last straw, and at their recommendation I tried the Gentle Leader as a last ditch attempt. I followed the guidelines for introducing the Gentle Leader very closely as I needed this transition to go smoothly.

He accepted it quickly once he realized it meant treats, and from the first walk with it I was sold. He still tries to pull with it on, but the difference now is he isn’t getting away from walkers, pulling arms out of sockets, or pulling people behind him like Marmaduke.

The combination of the Gentle Leader and constant reinforcement of good walking behavior has made him a pleasure to walk. To be honest, he hates the Gentle Leader–it takes patience and a treat to get it on him–but I actually think he is also enjoying walks more now that we’re not both frustrated.

Before you use, make sure the fit is exactly right so your dog isn’t uncomfortable or able to get out of it. As a backup, I also put his collar on him. I had some doubts and reservations about this product but it was life changing for us, and I’m even about to buy him a second one because I use it to take him to the off-leash lake and it’s getting muddy and gross.

Hopefully as we continue to work on his leash manners, one day we’ll be able to transition away from it.

The Gentle Leader truly transformed walks with my 10 lb Maltipoo. He may be a small little guy, but he would pull like a sled dog. I was beginning to get very worried about damage to his trachea. The Gentle Leader was recommended by many reputable training sources, and it did not disappoint.

The first few walks took some getting used to and he still bats at his snout occasionally, but now for almost the entire duration of our walks there is slack on the leash and he walks next to me, or just slightly ahead of me.

My one gripe is that the small size (up to 25lbs) on my little 10lb little guy leaves a very long tail of the collar dangling. There is no plastic clip to keep the tail end held up. It feels like an small but unfortunate oversight, because I have to tie the long end in a knot every time I put the collar on him.

Otherwise, highly recommend!.

The design of the harness is fantastic. I really didn’t think I’d ever be able to enjoy walks with my border collie mix. Whenever Dodger saw another dog (or bird or butterfly or. ) he would bark and pull and make walks miserable.

This has almost completely stopped the pulling part and we’re getting the rest of it under control. The one con is that the stitching either was frayed upon receipt or frayed after a couple of walks.

Not sure how long it will hold up, or whether this is a design flaw or just a quality control issue with this one particular harness. Still, I am really happy with the product and would certainly recommend it to others who are struggling, frustrated and ready to give up walking a pulling dog.

Had one of these a 25yrs ago. This new one is just the same. When the dog gets to the end of the given leash, it turns his head and there is no stress or pulling. This dog took to it easily, much better than our previous dog who took a bit of coaxing until he accepted it and walked well.

This headcollar was recommended to me originally by my dog trainer but unfortunately we ended up agreeing that it just did not work for my pup. I had no problem putting it on her but once on she scratched and scratched and scratched trying to get it off.

We continued to try it out hoping that she would eventually get used to it but we didn’t have any luck and after awhile she was scratching so much at it that I started worrying it was causing her too much distress and that she might accidentally hurt herself trying so hard to remove it.

Yes, even with supervision, and lots of distractions and treats, it was just too much! Its high quality material and it arrived quickly so I can’t fault chewy. com for anything. I donated it to a local animal rescue that I volunteer with rather than returning it because it is a good material and all.

I have had my choc lab in a similar style devive for years, it never really worked well but would allow me to hold him securely when he decided that either a motorbike, other dog or passing cyclist needed to be sorted out!.

I looked through ebays offerings and did a little research, finally deciding on the Halti as from my horse riding days this was precisely how you control a horse and i figured it would work the same way(only concern i had was him slipping the lead, so i kept a choke chain on also(which was unseeded)).

From the moment that we started to walk he was like a different dog, no pulling he just walked at my side. If he occasionally got ahead the halti would bring him back to heel without me having to do anything, wonderful!.

My dog was attacked by a staffie type dog when he was a pup, this has made him be somewhat defensive when he sees another dog(this is usually a horrible type of experience whete its a fight to hold and control him).

We experienced 2 other dogs and this would normally be enough to trigger a violent response from him. We still had the usual growling and barking but the episode was 80% less than usual and easily managed and quickly forgotten.

The halti gave me so much confidence that i allowed my son(17) to lead and walk him, he was shocked atthe difference in him on the very 1st walk and shared the same views of how much more pleasent the walk was.

I am honestly shocked at just how good this collar is and just how well it works to correct pulling, all without any intervention from me. i hope it will continue to work over time, that remains to be seen, but to say im wildly impressed is the understatement of the year!.

They don’t last forever but we don’t use them forever. If you start training it when your pup is 16 to 20 weeks, they will need a larger one in a few months. This design allows us to keep the nose loop completely loose, and the cheek straps (plus training ) makes it easy for the dog to want to keep it on.

Head halters put no pressure on a dog’s neck, so a dog is never choked, not even accidentally. This is a safer way to handle large dogs. Learning to condition a dog to love a head halter is great practice for conditioning a dog to love a crate, to love coming when called, to love relaxing around other dogs.

You need to learn how to be a good trainer to use a head halter, you can’t just slap it on and go, and that’s a great advantage to head halters.
