20 Best Hay Nets For Horses (2023 Updated)

Well made for occasional use, or daily user with a small number of animals. Holds 1-2 slices of hay so not very good with more than 1-2 animals. We used with 3-4 sheep in a pen at a recent fair and had to refill several times per day.

I wish they bottom would be wider or less angled. I think it would hold the hay in the feeder better.

Nice basket feeder. It is much bigger than I expected. The hay fits in there with plenty of room. It mounts at a perfect angle too. It appeared from the photo that there were mounting holes only in the top but there is also a pair of mounting holes at the bottom to keep it balanced.

Sturdy, easy to hang (doesn’t come with hanging hardware), good size for 1-2 small goats if feeding only once a day. Good for 2-3 small goats if feeding twice per day. It fits up to two flakes of hay.

Adult goats can’t get heads through the wires. The small size makes it easy to fit in just about anywhere. Doesn’t rust. I am going to buy a second one – I bought only one at first to make sure I liked it before buying another.

I’d love it if a feeder exactly like this was made by Rugged Ranch but was twice as wide. Also, a catch tray option on the botton would perfect the system. I’d.

I am truly amazed, best product ever!! I was ready to sell my 6 year old palomino mare as a broodmare due to the head shaking syndrome she developed this year. She went from a well behaved horse to a horse unbearable to ride.

I was at a total loss on how to deal with this issue until I read online about head shaking syndrome and became aware of the nose net as being a possible solution. This product is very easy to attach to her rope halter and she is comfortable wearing it.

And the price is very affordable. Who would have thought that this simple product would be the solution to my mare’s problem. I am 100% convinced that the nose net has worked for my horse. She is once again the horse I was able to ride before she developed the head shaking syndrome.

Worked just like it should! It’s easy to use. I didn’t notice, when I ordered it, that there were size options, and ended up getting a medium. I think a large would have been better for my larger horse, but the medium works very well.

It’s very simple to use. I put it on his halter when we go for walks, and bridle when we ride.

Using this nose net alone was of no use in keeping biting bugs from my horse’s face. If you rode with another face mask of some type plus this net, perhaps it would help more.

Finally found an excellent worthy of 5 stars hay net. Love everything about it. Great size (i got the 1/2 bale version), super easy to fill, spaces are consistent and not too large or too small. My horse has no issues with emptying it! Love the heavy duty rope with rubber stopper to cinch down the opening AND the option to hang from safe metal clip.

Size and texture of the cord is safe and easy on horses teeth and gums, yet super sturdy to hold up to lots of chewing abuse. Super happy with the purchase!.

I had to leave a review because these are more expensive than other Slow feeder nets but when I started to read that people had to repair other nets I think these end up costing less in the long run.

I have 2 small , one 1/2 bale ( best size) and 1 full bale ( too big and heavy to manage to ‘ hang’ for a 5. 1’ woman and if left on the ground – mud! Prob would work in a trough though). Anyway I have had them for 3 years and have hangry rough horses / mares ! No holes yet.

This is fantastic for reducing waste and keeping my horses “grazing” over a longer portion of the day, which is way better for them than their scoff and wait approach! I’m unsure of the long-term impact the material could have on teeth or the impact of having them eat from a slightly higher point than the ground.

I’ve heard ground eating is better for their airways, but I also know this keeps their hay cleaner and dust free which seems good as well. Either way, I’m so thankful for the easy to use system that keeps my horses from stomping half their hay into the mud and keeps them fed more slowly and steadily throughout the day!.

I have 2 of these and rotate them so one is always clean, full and ready to use. I have 2 geldings. Magic is 30 years old and requires lots of feed to keep his weight. He also takes a long time to eat his meals.

My other gelding Antonio stays fat on air. I have to seperate my boys for meals. Magic is fed in my backyard when it’s not raining and Antonio will stand and paw at the fence. Tony only gets a balance ration which he inhales.

Enter the feeder ball. I fill the ball with his 1 1/2 lbs of ration pellets, toss in a handful of beetpulp pellets and break up a few alfalfa/Timothy cubes and place the ball in the pasture. The cube pieces help to slow the release of the pellets and Antonio will stay busy for an hour or more, leaving Magic and my fences alone.

I tried putting some hay inside to slow the release but then I had to remove it with tongs. I would not recommend filling the ball with anything soft or that would attract ants or bugs. Also never leave the ball out in the rain.

It could be designed a bit better but as is it works great for my needs. Get 2 so you always have a clean one and pick bright colours if you will be using the ball in a pasture.

It’s exactly like it looks in the picture, but I didn’t feel the quality was as good as it could be. I fear that if it would dent in easily if they pawed at it or tired to bite it. The hole is pretty good size and the treats fall out very easily when I rolled it around the lot trying to get my horses attention.

It takes no effort to get the apple treats to fall out. I would never put feed or anything smaller in it. Just me but I feel like it would all pour out at one time once your horse figures out how to tilt it.

However My horse who is always curious about everything has no interest at all in it. I have left it in his lot for days and it just lays in the same spot. I gave it a three because I didn’t feel it was of the quality it looked in the picture and how quickly the treats came out.

I would not buy it again.

I bought this net in the 7 foot size to have something to throw while wading the flats. I purchased it because it is the best reviewed cast net under 8 feet. Mine has been nothing but a headache, from frequent braille line tangles, bad opening to now having 2 big holes in the net after 3 weeks of use on sandy flats.

If bass pro’s return policy wasn’t so bad I’d actually try to return it and buy something else. The net I had before was a cheaper 8 foot Tyzac and that was much better. Very disappointed. Maybe I got a defective net or s previously returned one, it’s that bad.

This net is garbage! The distance between the brail lines is too far, this causes the net to have very large loops in the lead line when retrieving. This net let’s bait swim out the bottom of the net in deeper water, threw it for about 2 hours and after watching several shad swim out of the net I gave up and used a different net, 10 throws later I had all the bait I needed for the day.

I’ve never met a horse who didn’t adore Mrs. Pasture’s Cookies for Horses and want to gobble more. And I like them, too, for my own reasons. Mainly since the size and firmness make Mrs. Pasture’s perfect for the pocket of any jacket.

They don’t crumble and they don’t smell so if I forget to feed one, there isn’t any mess.

I’ve always intended to write to Purina about how impressed I am with Purina Senior feed, but never got around to it. A recent e-mail asking for feedback prompted me to act. About 2. 5 years ago, after using another brand of horse feed for many years, I noticed our horses were just not looking as robust as I’d hope they would.

They were receiving all the proper nutrients via grain and forage. Some took supplements and some were on maintenance medications. They were all regularly vetted and had yearly dental work and farrier work every 5 weeks.

I did some research and after many weeks decided to switch our herd to Purina Senior and Enrich Plus. I like that Purina Senior has a fat pellet called Amplify and also sold Amplify separately in the event a horse needed additional fat (due to increased work, age-related changes, need for additional calories or other considerations).

I also like that Purina Senior is a complete feed which is a consideration with an aging herd. While I didn’t have high expectations I was truly impressed with our results. After only 30 days I noticed increased energy, body condition improvement, shiny coats, dappling, and a brightness in our seniors that was great to see again.

Our herd continues to thrive on Purina Senior and Enrich Plus. We will be a customer for many years to come. Thank you!.

I was worried about the weight loss on our Very Special older Broodmare Momma Faye. Started her on your Product Purina Senior and she is filling in through her topline and hips so much better than before.

She lets me know that she Loves the taste of it by nickering like crazy for it. I think the extra fiber in it helps since her teeth are getting much shorter and she is starting to ball up her hay. With the colder weather up our way in SD no grazing is available which she can still do, so I needed to be ahead of the cold and get weight on her to head into the colder months.

Purina Sr has made her really fill in I could start to see the difference in the first 2 weeks which is making me happy. She has a great personality, great bloodlines, and has produced some great babies for us so it is time for us to return the favor and take the best care of her as possible even though her Momma days are over.

Our mill mix no longer gives her what she needs at her age. THANK YOU PURINA!!.

My horse is 25 y. o. , and doing great on the senior feed. He gets more in the winter, and able to cut back in the summer when he’s on pasture. I’m fortunate that he self regulates on pasture, and has great conformation.

I continue to exercise him regularly with riding, mostly walking and trotting, but he will go into a lope on his own, once I get him conditioned for the summer. I used Strategy, until a couple of years ago and switched to the senior feed on my vet’s recommendation.

(holycrappoly it was friggin EPIC trying to sign in to write a #$&^%#$&^! review. other than that severe annoyance, this is a good product) I have a mustang/Arab cross who is super fuel efficient and always hungry, this slows her down to something resembling normal, keeps hay from being wasted (thereby saving money).

The holes are small enough not to be a foot hazard. You should wrap the tie string around the object you are hanging the bag from so your horse doesn’t get it around their neck. I am feeding in field or run-in, and this keeps the hay clean and dry and free from trampling.

I hang it at about chest level, much more natural than a hay rack (I’ve had issues with hay bits in horse’s eyes with racks), the horses’ heads are at a more natural level, and pulling at the hay in the bag keeps them occupied.

You can also hang several bags in various parts of the paddock or pasture to make lazy horses or ponies move around in a more natural grazing fashion. To fill it, I snap one side of the opening on a woven wire fence (you could use a hook on a post), and hook the other side with another hook; stuff about 1/3 to 1/2 bale in.

2 or 3 bags this way will feed my two for 24 hours. So far, despite horses tearing at the mesh, the bags remain sturdy and unbroken. Even if a square tore, you should be able to tie it back together.

I had purchased a hay net a while back and it was perfect. My horse foundered and can’t be on grass so he eats hay out of the hay net to slow him downs and I it works well but the net gets shredded after a while so I had to replace it.

They diidn’t have the same net do I bought this one and am not happy with it. Too long, no medal rings around the top, it’s hard to refill.

My horse eats too fast so I use hay nets with various size openings. These nets have 2 inch holes that slow her down but do not frustrate her like the ones with very small openings. The smallest holes I use are 1.

5 inches for overnight feedings. During the day I use these for smaller, more frequent feedings. I open them inside a plastic barrel with the edges folded down around the rim to fill them up. I like that there are no metal rings.

The draw string is long enough to tie where ever I want to hang it up. The nylon is easy to wash in a bucket.

Love these halters, The metal tip not only gives it a more clean look but an easy sign for learners if they did their knot right! The rope is stunning quality, not too stiff but not too soft either! And it definitely doesn’t loose its color or fray if gotten wet.

I bought this halter for my horse to wear under her bridle, with a second set of reins, for trail riding. It is lightweight, supple, and quite narrow, so it does not interfere with the fit of the bridle.

It seems to be well-made; the material seems durable and tightly woven without being stiff. I’ve used it about five times so far and it seems to be holding up well. The reflective strands really stand out if they catch even a little bit of light.

The end of the tassel is wrapped in string, not metal, so it won’t hurt anything if it swings around. My mare has an average-sized and shaped head for a 15hh horse and the halter fits perfectly around the nose and through the throatlatch.

I’ve been very please with my purchase and highly recommend it if you’re looking for a riding halter for a finished horse.

I was kind of disappointed these didn’t come in a lot of colors. I don’t want to use a chain if i don’t have to so i bought the rope halter and I put it on my little half arab mare that just has some “i can’t hear you” mentality some days while lungeing and asking to slow down and when i asked her to walk and gently popped her face in this she slowed right down.

It was like god himself came down and slapped her to walk I have never seen a transition so good with this mare. It was so effective just the little pop on her nose i gave her ONCE that while riding next i just asked for walk and she dropped right down to a walk.

This halter has set my mare straight and it doesn’t hurt like a chain does it just gets her attantion.

I love these slow feeders. I put these in my trailer when I travel. There is minimal waste with these smaller openings. I do have one gelding that is not a fan of taking smaller bites, HOWEVER he did become acclimated to these in a short amount of time.

Easy enough to fill and expand to hold a large amount of hay. I would caution to not hang close to the ground if you have one that paws. being nylon the shoe can get stuck. All in all a great bag.

I really like using the slow feed hay nets from Schneider Saddlery for my two horses. I purchased four of them this summer and use them for their night hay. The hay I feed at night is a better quality then the regular hay and if I feed it on the ground it is eaten too fast, or worse, trampled and wasted! These nets are a good value and have held up well so far.

They are large enough for me to pack as full as I want. In the morning the horses have eaten every bit of hay out of them. It keeps them occupied for a long time. It took a few days for my horses to become accustomed to eating from a hay net, as I used to always feed hay on the ground.

Now that they have the idea, they look forward to their hay net each night. If the weather is wet or windy, I also use these nets during the day. My horses have direct access to their own paddock from their stalls, so using the nets in foul weather keeps their hay dry and from blowing away.

I bought hay nets from a different source and they were more expensive. The slow feed hay nets from Schneider Saddlery are just as durable and roomy. I am very pleased!.

The bag itself is okay. The tie rope is not as heavy as I was hoping like a previous bag I had purchased. One on the bags’ rope broke after about a week of use. The bag is more flimsy than some bags when filling it with hay.

I have a young horse who needs to eat a lot to help him grow. I found this bag extremely easy to load. It has a wide opening, and due to the large size it fits all sizes of hay flakes, which I like as my bales of hay weigh 130+ lbs.

Even the large flakes I could easily fit 3 flakes into this bag. My horse could easily get get to the hay to eat due to the large openings. I like the large snaps that swivel, and adjustable straps making it easy to hang.

I also like the strong material used to make this bag. This hay bag is not for a horse that needs to be limited on hay, and it certainly is not a slow feeder.

I love this hay bag. It is easy to use. I have been using it for a couple of years, and it is still holding up. I take it camping because it is easy to hang and fill. I just bought another one to have on hand, not because the old fell apart.

This bale net is awesome! I put it on 1600+ lb 4X4 triticale hay bales. I see people’s reviews about using it, so here ya go. This is how I do it. With bale about 8 feet from its desired final resting place, put net over bale with center (metal ring) approximately centered.

pull it as tight as you can with net draped to ground. I have a mini skid steer that I use, you can use a tractor with hay spear or bucket, with winch from truck, side by side, quad, lawn tractor (you can also wrap a tow strap around the bail and “roll” it onto it’s side.

) You could also do it with 3 or 4 people, if nothing else. I use the forklift forks to flip the bale on its side twice, in the same direction, so the open part of net is on top. CAUTION: Be careful, make sure you don’t hit the net with forks, hay spear, etc.

Now pull both ropes at the same time, while pulling the net up the bale, drawing the net closed. If there’s a hole at the top, I weave the extra rope through the netting to close the hole and then tie the rope tight with a half hitch and stuff the rope into the hole.

It is easier with 2 or more people, but I do it easy enough by myself.

The velcro quick release really does work, speaking from experience, and I appreciate the reflector features on the cheek pieces. I’ve purchased several of this brand over the years. Like everything, prices have gone up, though- it’s a teensy bit expensive for a web halter, so I had to give it a 4, but not because it’s not a good product!.

I’ve bought a few of these for my younger horses since they fit well, look nice and hold up with play time. Recently, I was very lucky my youngster did not get injured when the Velcro breakaway did not break.

Instead I found his halter ground into the dirt and the stitching above the breakaway part broke loose. Don’t think I will order any more as I worry about this truly functioning as a breakaway halter.

Otherwise it is a nice halter for a great price.

This bonnet is adorable! I bought it with the matching A/P saddle pad and it looks great! The only thing I would recommend is that you should only get this if you have a large horse. This was for my 16.

2 hand thoroughbred mare and it was pretty big on her. I have no complaints about anything other than the sizes, because everything else about it is awesome! Great job to WeatherBeeta, but I think there should be a size comparison for future reference!.

i love the product but i’ve bought two now and both colors are much more bright and not pastel at all. i got the lime green and lavender and got more of a neon green and periwinkle blue. i still enjoy them just a little confused.

I have purchased many of these bags. I feed hay exclusively with them. One thing to note, they are not all the same quality. The small ones are not nearly as well made as the large ones are. The small bag clips break within 24 hours of use and are rendered useless.

I now only purchase the large blue ones. They come with the appropriate number of straps (3) for sewing the top closed, hanging and securing the bottom of the bag. The purple and teal ones only come with two straps.

Having said that- the navy and royal are the best slow feeders I’ve ever found. Good luck!.

I bought these to use in the stalls at my boarding facility. I wanted to keep hay in nets to mimic grazing and to save the amount of hay waste. I was getting extremely tired of filling nets and was looking for a better option.

These are incredibly easy to fill, my helpers while I was away told me they were awesome. I would definitely recommend these to anyone who wants to feed in nets but is looking for an easier option. Would definitely buy again.

I would recommend adding your own clips so you don’t have to unhook them to fill them daily.

Bought this for a momma cow we’re trying to keep healthy to feed her baby during this drought. She’s easily spoiled and hollers all day for more food. Currently feeding Sudan and this helps slow her down.

She hates it but it’s helping. Seems durable enough for this hangry cow! I’m only giving 4 stars because the straps and rings are in strange positions.

I purchased this one because the one I have owned for more than 10 years is still serving me perfectly. But the thickness of the plastic tray on the new one is 1/3 the thickness of the old one. The new one split open after 30 days serving one small bull and two donkeys.

The old one has survived 10 years with 60 head of cattle, 7 donkeys and a horse. They gave me a refund. I purchased the same brand feeder elsewhere for $30 less, and it has the same THICK tray that my old one has! Sorry, Tractor Supply.

You are intentionally having the manufacturer skimp on materials just to boost your profit margin. You have lost a big dollar (in my world) customer.

these bunks take a lot of abuse from our cattle, they are also drug from pasture to pasture for feeding throughout the year. 2022 has been a rough one, thank God these feeders are affordable and we can get replacement liners once they are destroyed.

We have purchase several sizes for multiple places. They also work great for goats and sheep as well.

I’m about to share some redneck genius with y’all! A few weeks ago I saw a guy loading up a few of these bunk feeders in his truck. Because I’m nosy and like to strike up conversations with strangers, I found out that he was buying them for his elderly mother to use as raised garden beds.

This is a great use for these feeders: they are lightweight, can be moved as needed, and are deep enough to grow a large variety of veggies and maybe even strawberries? Even better, they are raised up off the ground high enough to discourage my 100lb Labrador from playing in the dirt, and the family of cottontail rabbits in my yard from getting to my salad greens! Well, I had to try it, and sure enough, within a week of planting seeds I have a few Swiss chard seedlings already poking thru the soil.

I would recommend drilling a couple more holes in the feeder for better drainage. I may buy a couple more of these if I get a good harvest.

Bought this for our vacation home for a raised bed garden. Since I wanted veggies while at our home but hoping this will keep the weeds at bay & still get veggies! There were two scanning codes on the feeder & they weren’t the same price, which I didn’t notice until I got home.

Great product. Sturdy galvanized metal frame yet light weight to around pasture. 2 drain holes in tub to allow water to drain. Wide base makes it less likely to be flipped over by cattle. Will be purchasing more soon.

Frame is sturdy, but pan is plastic. Use to be when you ordered online and had it delivered to the store, shipping was free. If your gonna charge freight, they should get that right. But the pan/tray was dented and a bolt was missing to adjust it.

Be ready with a rubber mallet to knock on the frame in order to adjust the height, because it is not an easy slide adjust. Only had it for 4 days now as I write this review, using it to feed one horse with cows in the same pasture.

So far none of them have knocked it over and horse is eating out of it with no problem. Overall satisfied, but always a bit disappointing when your product is damaged. I would have given it a 5, but for that.

Great feeder, very sturdy, works well for weaning calves. Light enough to drag around. Drilled holes for drainage, really like how the tub base is divided. Is a bit pricy, but worth it. Definitely would buy again, wish I would have found this years ago.

I didn’t adjust the height, kept it how it was shipped.

This is a great feeder, it works fantastic for goats. Especially for the price! I can feed them hay and grain them in the same feeder. The pictures don’t do it justice, it is more sturdy and bigger than it looks in the picture.

I also have cows and horses that have used the feeder and it works great for them too !.
