20 Best Harnesses For Big Dogs (2023 Updated)

I have a Miniature Australian Shepherd, & this is so great. As shes only a 5 month old, she chewed her cheaper harnesses that were about the same price at Walmart, & I just couldnt deal with getting another cheap one, nor could I get an extremely expensive harness! I gave in some hope for this harness, & it works perfectly! Im super satisfied with this harness.

The material is thick, & strong/Sturdy. The price is worth it!!.

Im amazed that a harness this well made and sturdy is sold at such a reasonable price. Its easy to put on and take off, which had been a problem with my other harnesses. Dillon, my Golden Retriever Mix, a/k/a Wild Child, is no longer a dreaded beast! Its so much more pleasant walking him with this harness.

Everyone with a large dog that pulls should try this wonderful harness.

This boxer rescue has been a handful since day one. Pulls like a train, gentle leader Houdini. Wore me out. Got this harness today and its sturdy, well made, leash rings in all the right places , plenty of room to adjust and looks comfy.

Best of all no pulling. In fact he seemed quite bAffled that he wasnt able. Mom=1 Tyrion=0.

We have a slender, silky coated hound who is wiggly, at just a year. She appears to be a mix of greyhound and Rhodesian ridgeback, very muscular. She can slip out of many harnesses that are not covering enough of her torso.

We put on the tactical vest, and not only did it fit well and give ud more control and confidence on the leash, but it relieved my fears of Penny breaking out in a dead run to who-knows-where. ) she does have a chip).

We are happy with the tactical vest! Yes, Penny has a long neck, barrel chest, and narrow abdomen. I’m so glad she has a safe and humane way to guide her.

This is probably the best harness I came across. I liked it so much that I have four for my two GSD dogs which undergo continuous training. I was impressed with the quality altogether. The lining is from a soft fabric which is kind for the dogs during their intense training periods.

The under chest part embraces the dog very well without restricting the movements of their front legs. Important advice is to check the table and measure the dogs dimensions in order to get the correct size.

Very good price, very good quality, my dog a pittbull that use to get loose all the time from his other collars that he simply would break off cause he is very strong. Would highly recommend this. plus he seems to love it it looks very comfortable in it.

Two for the harness even though it would fit sasquatch, It looked sewn well and the buckles and straps are ok. The two is really for selling a halo that collapses with the slightest bump. The little halo bendable wire is useless even as a curb feeler.

The thing needs to be made of aircraft aluminum, not pipe cleaner! The two would have been a one for except for the harness. The fastener for the hoop doesn’t fit the space it’s supposed to work in and is cheesy engineering.

It’s a snap on over a strap but there’s no room for the snapping part between the straps and anyway, whenever the ring moves or gets bent it falls off.

We thought we were going to have to put our dog down. She was giving herself concussions. Then we discovered the halo! Now she gets around without head injuries. She also has learned how to use it to move you out of her way or get treats!.

Originally bought this harness in size medium for my cocker/ Yorkie mix as that’s what size his old harness is. We laughed when it got here; it could fit a chihuahua. The best part, Chewy made it right and we didn’t even have to send the medium back! I also ordered in an XL after measuring my boy’s chest, but I was surprised.

He is a bit chubby, but never thought he would need an XL in anything. The new harness came the next day! Soooo impressed with Chewy’s EXCEPTIONAL level of customer service! Thank you guys a ton! I wish ALL retailers valued their customers like Chewy does!.

I bought two of these, one for my medium Frank and one for my large Arrow. They ae apparently designed only for small dogs. Using the chart provided, I bought a medium for Frank and a large for Arrow.

Lots of sizing issues. The breast pad needs to be lengthened by at least half. It seems to be designed for the average basenji. Its short length means that the chest strap painfully cuts into the shoulder/armpit area of my dogs.

The chest sizing straps are difficult to adjust, and fully extended are too short to fit properly on my dogs. Frank and Arrow were happy to see them and try them on, but now edge away if someone suggests wearing them.

Excellent concept. Lengthen the chest pad and the chest straps. Doing so will prevent injury to the dog (or hamster, or alligator, or whatever). Yes, it will increase the price of the product at both the wholesale and retail level but will result in superior customer satisfaction.

Originally bought this for my guy in a M and the chest piece was comically short. (Think a REALLY short tie. ) Chewy graciously returned for a L but it is still too short that the straps cut under the arms.

My dog fits the M sizing for neck best but is at the upper limit for the chest sizing/lower limit for chest sizing on L so this was a surprise. I thought maybe the neck straps would not be able to be tightened snug but straps cutting into underarms was not expected.

This won’t work for our pit/American bully/mastiff mix. Pictures added but he is in the middle of an enrichment game w the Hol-ee ball from Chewy. I recommend that!! But excuse the torn up paper it is part of the game.

The blue is a beautiful color though!.

I have a rescue dog that is so fluffy I call her my Muppet. Her name’s Chelsea and she is 1/4 Malamute, 1/4 GSD. 1/4 Poodle, and 1/4 Schnauzer to give you an idea of how fluffy she is. She looks like a gray/tan version of the shaggy dog.

So she’s a ball of fur with enough energy to match the Energizer bunny. I needed a front pull harness because she pulls hard when she walks. She just HAS to reach her destination that much faster and we just can’t walk at her pace, or at least that’s her logic.

So I needed to slow her down. She responds well to front pull harnesses so I thought I’d try this one. It works great. My girl is about 40lbs, and I got the medium. My only issue, and it has nothing to do with the harness itself, is that she’s so fluffy that trying to secure it or get it over her head when I’m taking it off is like searching for a needle in a haystack.

The straps are thin and get lost in her fur. I do like it though. I’m just warning people that might have a shaggy dog. Be careful you don’t pull your dog’s fur out when trying to secure it or get it off them.

She’s a good girl, doesn’t flinch or get upset if I accidentally pull her fur, but I still feel guilty when I do it. Next time I want something with thicker, more visible straps, and hopefully I can get it from this brand.

They’re good. The harness is solid and has both front and top pull loops, in case you’re not looking for a front pull.

I have bought a number of different harnesses for my beloved rescue dog. She is my baby (six years old ) and I want her secured in the back seat of any vehicle in the event of an accident. She is not allowed to travel in a vehicle without wearing a harness which is then tethered to either a child seat stanchion or a seat belt connection.

It is essential that the tether also be high quality as well as the harness. I personally do not drive or ride without wearing a seat belt. My dog enjoys going back and forth to look out the rear windows and occasionally stands on the center console to look out the front.

Whereas a sudden stop or collision might cause her to impact the back of a front seat, she can not be thrown into the windshield, the front passenger compartment or out a rear window. This is the most expensive and best designed harness I have bought to date.

The manufacturer boasts of a lifetime warranty and I will hold them to it only if necessary. If it continues to perform well, I will update my review later to 5 stars.

We bought this harness on a whim when our baby was about a year old. Our vet said she was about done growing and it would be a good investment. Even though they were tough to clasp we LOVED the metal fasteners.

Jokes on us. About a month and a half later we went to harness her up for training and it was snug, we maxed out the straps and left for class. We talked to her trainer, she agreed it was too snug, we got her weighed 52¼lbs and remeasured and she had put on 6lbs and some girth around chest.

She told me I could exchange it, per store policy. Unfortunately, we were about a week over the stores 30 day return policy. We have looked at new ones and are not fond of the plastic fasteners. There was a reason we bought the Kurgo harness with metal that we did.

I wish we could’ve exchanged for the larger size. Outside of that issue, we absolutely loved this harness and the seat belt clip. It is an investment for people on a limited income, but when it fit, it was worth it.

I love Kurgo products and think they are great quality, but was disappointed in this harness. If you have a barrel chested dog and want to attach a leash to the front D ring (my pup is a puller, so that was the whole reason we bought this), I wouldn’t recommend this harness.

I have a 14 month old standard poodle (45 lbs) and we bought a medium as she fit smack dab in the middle of those measurements. Unfortunately, the harness just doesn’t fit deep-chested dogs. The neck opening is weirdly large and can’t be tightened very much so after adjusting the harness to fit her, the front D ring ended up right between her front legs.

We couldn’t attach a leash to the front ring because she would stumble over it while we walked. Seems like Kurgo could fix this pretty easily by just moving the front D ring higher to be closer to the neck opening, but unfortunately not easy to fix/solve the issue at home.

We’ll be donating this as it unfortunately doesn’t work for us.

This is the second harness from this company that we bought for our dog. The first one is still in good shape, but wanted a back up just in case. What we really like about this harness is the mesh component.

The other harnesses we bought for her would rub under her legs and cause rub marks on her skin. This one is soft, but still provides control when we walk.

I bought this before a long drive to NC from PA. with it I bought the safety belt for my dog, to help keep her safe. Its worth the money so far, as it seems to be sturdy, good quality material. I had to buy the xxl (the xl to xxl was too small) as I have a 70 lb pitty that has a broad chest/built.

I definitely recommend!.

We have been through several harnesses for our almost 3 year old Lab Sophie. She seems to love this one more so than any other we have gotten her. The material is very breathable. We are very satisfied.

I bought one of these for use in the car for my fifty pound shepherd/husky. I was pleasantly surprised with how well it fits, how much it holds up, and how simple it is to use. I can take it off and put it on with one hand.

The colors are bright and pretty and the fit is really great. Definitely a lifesaver in the car. want a second one for walks because she does so well in it. I highly recommend this harness. She tolerates it and the sliding ring on the back is convenient for attaching a leash or car anchor.

Also, a lot of sites don’t mention this, but it has a hook for tags on the left side that’s really convenient and stops them from being on the dog’s back.

Its one of those things that comes along to blow your mind bc of its ease of use. Then it arrives and your not alone; now your fumbling around with it, acting as though you know exactly what your doing with it, but silently processing its design at lightening speed hoping something will come to you to DO and it will magically just slip on your dogs neck.

Then, just as your going to announce your a fraud; you see it. And with a voice of confidence you state, “See, the dogs head goes through right here, and this part across the dogs chest you adjust , its soooo simple.

” You pull this section back here and adjust the Velcro inside of it; and you only have to do this once. ” Then adjust the nylon strap that travels under the belly so it comfortably reaches and clicks into place behind the dogs right leg.

Thats it. From here on out, it as simple as sliding over your dog head and clicking the clasp on the right. Its the coolest harness, I am going to get it in several colors.

This harness has completely eliminated the pulling habit of my dog. I could not be more thankful to the sales associate who recommended it! Before my husband and I could barely take her on walks because she would pull so much that she would be almost choking herself.

It was embarrassing and I felt like our neighbours were judging us. But since we tried this harness it has completely stopped the pulling and we are now able to take her on long walks in the park and around our subdivision.

We just adopted a 74# bulldog who loves to lead! We desperately needed something to break FIRMLY instilled old habits and this did the trick. After 2 uses he’s already greatly improving. Will he always need to walk with this harness? Too soon to tell if the harness will be needed as a permanent reminder, but that’s OK.

Once it’s adjusted it’s quick to slip on and off. Slip it over his (BIG) head and snap the sides, we’re ready to go! He doesn’t seem to mind wearing it and makes our walks safer.

This harness makes the world of difference! It has made walking so much easier! It was a little on the pricier side but it was well worth it! It took us a little bit of time to put it in the first time she wore it, but now that we have it figured out it doesn’t take long at all!.

I purchased 2 of these harnesses; a large pink, and a large turquoise. I was adjusting the turquoise one before putting in on my dog, and one of the straps snapped. I wasn’t even tugging on the strap, only sliding the plastic buckle to adjust it.

I’m glad I wasn’t walking the dogs when it snapped. I will be exchanging the harness, but eventually will be purchasing different harnesses elsewhere for them as I don’t trust these ones to not break.

I picked up a pink harness and leash and purple leash in store. Store didn’t have the size purple harness. I purchased online. Waited and picked up in store. All is fine. Till I get home to put it on my puppy.

And the purples are not the same shade. The pinks I bought are. Works fine. Just a little sad they’re not the same.

I was hard pressed to find a harness that could fit my 4-month old Cavalier puppy, now nearly a year old, this harness from Coastal still fits with adjustments and performs beautifully. I had bought a Freedom Harness and still prefer my Coastal one over it.

Only thing that would make this better is a front D-ring, which it does not have.

I bought this hoping it would take the pressure off of my dogs throat. weĺl. it didn’t. Its larger than normal but the next size down is too small. I can’t return it because I don’t have the tags. I paid full price for this thing.

I purchased this harness after 2 previous leashes didn’t do the trick. I’m raising a Guide Dog puppy who is a 6-month-old lab with boundless energy and strength. Because part of the training includes frequent walks and public outings, I had to find something that worked to keep him from pulling and lunging.

Wow. What a difference! The walks are so much more enjoyable and he’s able to release his energy in a healthy way. He will still occasionally jump up when people are nearby, but part of that is his (my) lack of training (I’ve only had him for one month).

It’s pretty easy to put the harness on (the 1st time I just looked at the picture on the box to make sure I had it on him properly). I would recommend this harness to anyone who wants to enjoy their walks while keeping their dog in control.

I have a 9yo 75lb pit/lab mix. She is strong as an ox. I have tried all sorts of training and “no pull” harnesses with no success. SHe doesn’t “walk me”, she is just stubborn and strong. First walk with this harness was like a different dog.

Although she still kept the leash taught with no slack, I could feel her restrain herself when she started to try to pull harder. After about 20 minutes, I was getting slack in the leash. I sincerely wish I would have tried this harness years ago if it was even in existence back then.

The only downside is that I wish the leash was just a little longer, but I believe there are options for that which I haven’t looked into. 1000% recommend this harness. (PS- I realize the harness looks tight in the photo but it is just the way she is angled.

There is the proper amount of space between the strap and her body).

This harness is great when you have a new pup and want to keep them from biting the leash as you leash train given that it’s positioned to help the leash stay behind their head. It also allows you to safely pick up your pup with the support under the chest that you don’t get with a traditional dog collar.

The only con about this is that I bought two – one xs and one small as my pup transitioned in size and both the stitching started unraveling around the should area where I know the dog couldn’t have possibly been gnawing at that area.

With both harnesses, it happened around the two month mark. That would be the only reason that I would say not to purchase this particular brand.

My dog can’t back out of this harness, and it’s a choke-free walk now! We leave her collar w/I. D. tags on always, but she steps right into this comfortable, padded, non-escape harness for her walks.

We can tell she loves her new “harness and leash when we walk her! No more hacking and irritation to her throat and neck from pulling with the previous “collar and leash” walks! After trial and error, I wish I would have purchased this sooner, but now she gets extra walks that are comfortable; definitely worth the price.

She is a 20-lb. girl with a deep chest, and I bought a Medium — it’s very adjustable and safe. It’s so much easier for her to step into than the previous harnesses I tried with all the buckles and confusing straps.

Plus, she looks cute in it.

My frenchie has a whole wardrobe that consists of lots of clothing items and about 10 harnesses. This one is by far my favorite. The adjustable neck is so important with frenchies. They have big heads and to get other harnesses over her head is a struggle.

Not to mention the last one (different brand) ended up leaving a raw mark where it was rubbing her neck. No bueno! This harness slips right on, buckling easily with no fuss. Nothing pinches or rubs and it looks great.

It’s also very well made and feels very sturdy. I loved the multiple leash clip options and the top handle. Truly, nothing I dislike about it! This will be my go-to harness for all my dogs moving forward.

Now I just need more prints!!.

So far my Frenchie Mia really seems to love her new harness. The flower design just catches the eyes of everyone based on the colors that the harness are designed with. As the owner I like it as well.

Looks like she fits comfortable in it. Not to loose , not to tight. I’m just still getting used to it, compared to my old harness that we used to use, where Mia would step into the harness which made me feel like the pulling was truly 100% from her chest.

The new harness , it goes around her neck and chest area. Not sure if it’s putting any strain or pressure on her throat area or not. I’m a big believer in the right type of harness vs using a collar which could create major health problems when on a leash ( choking/breathing issues etc).

Would love to hear back from the creators of the harness to get their input /feedback of my concern based on the structural design of the harness. Providing me with some peace of mind that when my dog is in the harness, the pressure was tested and proved to be in the chest area instead of the under /lower throat area that can potentially be putting strain in her lower throat/jugular area.

Otherwise…I’m really liking it so far, it’s only been 2 weeks or so.

Okay so I’ve tried 7 different harnesses (yea I’m extra and my dog deserves the best, obviously) and returned them all, except for this one. These are some other popular ones I tried for ref: Ruffwear frontrange petsafe 3 in 1 K9 balance harness Barkbay no pull 2hounds no pull design Some random ones from Petsmart (Arcadia trail, I think?) The above either chaffed my dog (petsafe and K9 balance), didn’t fit properly (bad neck to chest ratio), or made her unwilling to walk because they were heavy.

My dog has a really deep chest, and a skinny neck and stomach with very spindly legs and super thin/no hair on her underside. She’s not a greyhound, but has a really similar build to one. She doesn’t pull on the leash at all, but I did want a front hook option for high traffic areas.

I could not find another harness that fit both her neck and chest. She’s a 16″ neck and a 29. 5″ chest, and I went with the large since I wanted to make sure it was long enough for her without digging into her armpits.

I think potentially the medium would have also worked since I’ve got both straps all the way tight on the large, but I noticed the bottom of the harness (like the bottom fabric part) is so much longer on the large than it is on the medium based on the measurements on the product page so that’s why we went with large.

This harness is super light and seems really durable. I’ve been using it for several weeks at this point and the straps haven’t loosened at all. My dog seems way more comfortable in this harness than her old one.

She’s a sensitive gal and her reactivity has already improved a bunch since she’s no longer being made a grump by her harness rubbing. Anyways, you should buy this because its super cute and well made and my dog loves it, and honestly, the price is really fair for what you get.

I was super glad to find this harness for our pup. She’s an 85 lb German Shepherd who is still working on training and walking etiquette. We previously had an easy-walk harness with the front clip and I LOVED it for training as it helps dogs turn around and look at you when the leash is pulled on.

I love that this harness has options for easy-walk adjacent leash clip as well as a back leash clip, which we use to clip her car seat belt into. I also love the durability of the harness; like I said, she’s still learning and is SUPER strong but this harness holds up and just from looking at it you can tell the stitching and make is solid.

Haven’t had a chance to try it during beach trips to see how it handles water but I’m sure it’ll be fine based on our experience so far. It’s also very cute on her and the color isn’t too loud like other harnesses you see on the market.

The emblem on the front is also a great touch! Overall, we are very happy with the harness and already gave our 15% off coupon to a pal and her pup!.

No frills, just solid construction; this is the harness I recommend when people ask. It is the very best thought out design I’ve seen on a harness: the dog doesn’t need to step through anything; the back clip-in point is oriented to distribute the force of a pulling dog throughout the harness (which minimizes pressure points when your dog who’s bred to sled is pulling you to your destination); and there’s a front clip in point when you want to minimize pulling tendencies.

Super burly and durable, while being comfortable and breathable. One of my dogs has put thousands of miles on his with no damage or fraying at all – incredible. I only wish Wilderdog made a version with a couple small pouches – let Fido carry the **** on long hikes! Overall, my favorite harness I’ve ever tried!.

My dog is a Maltese, currently about 6. 5-7 pounds. Ordered a small and it fits perfectly. She typically wears an xsmall in most dog clothes but sometimes she can be a small if she’s on the heavier side (her weight tends to fluctuate).

Perks: Easy to get on & off her quickly. Clasp is nice and easy to tighten & connect. When she’s skinnier, I tighten the strap to make sure it’s not too loose. The “shape fit” is awesome. “Double D ring” keeps the clasp from undoing or loosening when on the leash & makes it impossible for her to break an arm out of the harness Reflectors on the side – wouldn’t mind them being bigger though since my dog is so small, they’re not that noticeable Stylish Downsides: Not a harness you want to keep on your dog in the house.

Only good for walking them/going out because: Double ring on the top is so annoying. When she walks around in it, the rings clap together making an annoying noise Bothersome for her to roll on her back for belly b/c of the clasp and rings on back.

Easy to put on and off just step in and step out locking feature is nice for your more active hunting dogs in my case I have two brothers from the same litter. Blends into cover well with orange blaze to know where they are from short and long distance with Garmin GPS collars for rangy pointers.

Great harness. Only reason it’s not a 5-star is that the dog has to step into the webbing. Some harnesses go around the neck first and then buckle behind the shoulders so you don’t have to play with the dog’s feet.

Still a great product otherwise.

It took 2 weeks and my pup bit thru that thick fabric with ease, you’d think as expensive as this harness is, it would be made of better quality. 2 weeks and I had to throw it away I should have bought carhartt harness.
