20 Best Harness For Strong Dogs (2023 Updated)

I bought this harness nearly 10 months ago and have used it daily since. This harness was ideal for my dog: minimal fabric, a highly adjustable design, multiple quick-release buckles and both front and back attachment points.

No harness will magically fix pulling, but this harness was a helpful tool as I trained my dog to walk with a loose lead. I used the front attachment point when training him leash manners and have now transitioned to primarily using the back attachment point for comfort.

Occasionally, I use both attachment points for greater control: the harness is seriously versatile. It’s held up reasonably well to rain, snow and swimming. I only have minor issues with this product.

First, some of the hardware does not seem to be rust-proof and has left minor rust stains on the grey webbing. The hardware does not corroded to the point of losing structural integrity, despite the stains.

Second, the chest strap, while adjustable, doesn’t really hold the position of the metal slider, so needs constant readjustment or it’ll end up fully extended. This is fine for my dog’s size/shape but may not work for everyone.

I still highly recommend this harness and would absolutely buy it again when the time comes. My main hope is that the metal hardware will be made more rust-proof in the future. My dog weighs approximately 32lbs and wears a size small.

I ordered one each of these in the medium and large. I really like the design with the front and back clips for my dogs who do tend to pull too often. They seem well made however I would prefer a metal clips to the plastic clips that they opted to use on these.

My main problem is that the sizing was just wrong for my dogs. I understand it must be difficult to make something that fits the shape of a variety of dog breeds but I had trouble with I had trouble with fitting both dogs even using the provided measurements.

I ordered both a medium and a large. For both of these my dogs were at the bottom of the neck range. With the large even though I tightened it to the smallest size it was still several inches too big on my dogs neck.

The medium, while a bit loose around the dogs neck was not as far off in measurement as large. While there is some overlap in the sizing provided going down to from the large to a medium does not work for my dog because the medium simply wouldn’t go around the girth.

The medium I was able to make the girth fit fairly well on the dog it was purchased for. However this left still a slight neck gap plus a problem with the chest strap. The chest strap tightened to its shortest length was still too long and hung away from the dogs chest, it would not fit close the way it is meant to in the fitting instructions.

Unfortunately, these were not what I was hoping for and I don’t believe they fit properly based on the measurements provided.

We’ve had the same “gentle leader” harnesses for the life of our two senior dogs but we finally had to admit they’d seen better days. It was nearly impossible to find something similar that has the hook for the leash on the back instead of the chest.

Finally found this one and it’s pretty darn close to the original except the fit is not perfect. Both our dogs are on the longer side but still only ~ 40 pounds. The small worked great for our slightly smaller dog but was too small for our bigger dog, yet the medium is a little on the big side.

Sags on his underside and we have tightened it as far as it will go. When the dogs start to pull, the harness accordions around their neck. They love that we no longer have to put the harness over their heads! The seat belt feature is great and eliminated a separate car harness, but the little leash that comes with it for getting in and out of the car is ridiculously short.

Finally, the teal looks like more of a green than seafoam. Both our dogs are male but we wanted different colors so I was pleased.

My 68 lb. golden/standard poodle mix Gibson and I are longtime Ruffwear fans and have had several of their products over the years. He measures 32″ around the widest part of his chest, so he’s right on the cusp of the M or L sizing.

He has always been a Large in Ruffwear harnesses (the Front Range specifically), but I had to return the Large Hi & Light for a Medium as the straps around the neck were way too big, even tightened all the way! The Large harness gaped at the neck.

I was super bummed! Thankfully Ruffwear returns are super quick and easy, so I received the Medium replacement quickly, and it fits well, although maybe a little short on his torso. It seems fine, and he seems comfortable, so I don’t think it’s a problem, but my mom said it looks silly on him (rude!), which made me question whether that’s how it’s supposed to fit.

It does seem to fit a little shorter on his torso than the Front Range, which, again, he wears a size larger. I did also want to mention the larger sizing because the sizing tool states to take the larger size if between sizes, which Gibson is, and I found that due to the length of the neck straps, we actually needed to size down! Hope that’s helpful.

Gibson is kind of deep-chested and leggy but generally seems pretty well-proportioned. He’s built more like a poodle than a golden, for reference. Overall, though, I adore the color, and I absolutely love how lightweight the material is! Gibson gets hot easily and living in the South, I want to keep him as comfortable as possible, so this is an excellent summer alternative to the Front Range.

I love the option to clip the leash to the front of the harness, although I do wish the front clip wasn’t made of fabric (metal would feel more secure). The only problem I have is that the harness twists on him when he pulls even the slightest bit, and I find myself adjusting it on him frequently.

This might be user error, though, and I’ll keep working on figuring out the best fit for him. With a few tweaks, it would be perfect!.

They have never failed me. Whenever you are vacuuming hard floors and have the belt stretched to turn brush roll off, don’t forget to place it back in the regular position prior to storing your vacuum cleaner so that the belt won’t get stretched out.

This harness is working great for us. I got it for my dog with some *mild* mobility issues. I read all of the reviews prior to purchasing and RuffWear is very clear that this is not made for older dogs with mobility issues and I knew that going into it, therefore knew what to expect and for my dogs abilities, it is perfect for us.

My dog is fully capable getting around, getting up from laying and walking without assistance. I simply needed a harness that had a small handle on the **** area to guide him up the stairs. He can get up the stairs on his own and mostly does not need my assistance with the **** handle, I merely hold the handle to lessen the chance of injury in case he slips on the stairs.

So if he slips, I’ve got the handle and he doesn’t fall to the ground and down the stairs. And for that, it works perfect. Putting it on is easy (like i said, he can stand just fine). It doesn’t have easy snap in buckles due to the harness’ original purpose, which I was aware of and I don’t mind threading the straps each time.

It takes less than an minute and the harness is worth it. I opted for this rather than a harness intended for mobility issues because my dog’s needs are minimal and the ones from other brands are a bit much considering my dog doesn’t need help walking or rising.

I do wish it had a traditional hook for a leash. I had to get a carabiner to attach a leash to the harness. I realize it’s intended use and it has spots to attach rope, but even if we were using it for it’s intended use, I would imagine there are still moments where some people may use a leash?? Maybe not, anyhow the carabiner worked, just an extra step initially.

As for sizing, I got Medium. My dog is a 62lb lab mix. His measurements were just at the cusp of med-large, but more toward medium so thats what I went with. It mostly fits well. There is one single strap that is a bit short and doesn’t go any longer than I have it.

It’s the strap that goes from the underside chest pad to the neck straps. I can make the neck straps longer but it doesnt really make a difference. If that one strap was just a bit longer I think it would be perfect.

I think my dog is comfortable with harness for the time he wears it (two walks a day) but if I were to leave it on him all day, it would be tight around that area. The rest of the harness fits perfect so i would imagine the large would be been a bit too big for him.

Considering I take it off between walks, that minor sizing issue isn’t a deal breaker for us. If he wore the harness for hours at a time (or for it’s intended use) then I think it would pose a comfort issue.

So just consider that if your dog is also on the cusp of sizing.

This harness does what I wanted it to. My rescue dog was found on the freeway loose. I bought him a good harness but he excaped from it twice and both times i was very worried he would get hit by a car.

Something had to be done to secure him in his harness. this harness has back straps for the rear legs and he cannot back out of it. It is worth every penny of the $120. The only reason I gave it four stars is it is a pain to install.

If you have a dog that will not stand still this would take a long time to get it on. That being said once it is installed CORRECTLY, he/she will not be able to back out of it!! it does not use cheap plastic buckles which are easy to snap together but they could break under pressure.

So if you have a dog like mine and do not mind installing it correctly get it. Five stars has “My dog loves it”, but this is NOT about the dog loving it but about you loving your dog.

Hands down, this product does double duty for active dogs and aging/ injured dogs. Our still feisty 15 year old Australian Shepherd ruptured his knee ligaments. He’s a bit too old for surgery and looking for a good support solution was a rabbit hole until we found this harness.

At first it was perfect. About a week in, the bare webbing chaffed his hind leg raw. His back leg is still healing from the merciless chaffing he got from these webbing loops. Now we’re back to holding his booty while he hobbles around our yard, in one of the most humanly painful on the back and hilarious conga-lines ever.

Look, this product is really great but just like a human climbing harness, padding is required around the legs to distribute weight and prevent injury. I hopped on my sewing machine and sewed some fleece sleeves for the webbing.

His poor leg looks like raw meat only after 7 days of going outside four to five times a day, very short distances. So once his skin heals, I’ll put those sleeves on and hope that is a fix to this problem.

This is a really awesome product with one huge design error. Please design and offer leg pads similar to human climbing harnesses and I’ll be the first to buy and slip them on. Because a difficult situation with an injured dog shouldn’t be made worse by a potentially awesome solution.

I can’t imagine these breaking as some reviews say. My 55lb American Staffordshire Terrier/Boxer lunges, attempting to chase and attempts to back out of this harness. She has pulled me off the ground pulling with her lunging.

This harness is holding up completely. I’m 6′ tall, not a little person. My dog has some serious pulling power to lift me off the ground. I use a flexi leash so I have time to stand firmly before she pulls me.

(So she can’t knock me on the ground) I lock the leash and hold a firm grip. She’s never broke the harness no matter how hard she lunges. My dog isn’t allowed to chew on her leash or harness. That’s the only way I could see this breaking.

if my dog were to chew it. I have 3 dogs, none can escape from the harness.

My dog gets excited over a lot, and we go for walks in the park where there are lots of moving leaves/other dogs/birds/you name it that she would very much like to go investigate. Bottom line, the harness doesn’t stop pulling, but it does definitely reduce the “yank intensity”! I can see when she tries to pull that it tightens around her and makes her think twice – again, not a miracle cure, but definitely makes walks more pleasant versus a harness that doesn’t tighten around her chest at all.

The only warning I’d have is that the metal ring where you’d clip a leash can swing about if your dog is running with just the harness on. It’s a little tricky to figure out how to put it on at first (both “sets” of loops slide over your dog’s head, and then you have them step into it so the cushions are under their armpits), but easy after a bit.

It’s a nice harness!.

I am obsessed with this harness! I’ve been through at least 5 others, some not bad others a total waste of money. I won’t lie when I first opened it it looked a little complicated but once you get the hang of it it couldn’t be easier.

I have a 16 pound Cavalier King Charles spaniel she is right on the border between a size small or a medium. I decided to go on the safe side and got the medium. It’s so adjustable it fits her just perfect with room for growth if she puts on a few pounds.

She loves it and I love it I can tell it’s very comfortable for her. It’s great quality and the price is reasonable. I’ve bought my last harness for her!.

Well made sturdy harness. Nice that the two bone-latches are on the back end, so no “step-thru” needed when “dressing” my dog – slip it over his head, and snap, snap, done. Took just a little bit of work to adjust it properly.

He is a 52# Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog (taller and leaner than an Australian Cattle Dog), although he’s a bit on the heavy side for the breed. I bought a large based on other reviews, and yes, I also think it would run small for breeds generally considered large like German Shepherd, Dobie, Rottie, big chested Bully breeds.

First let me say that Abbie is a chewer- big dogs have nothing on her. She kept chewing through the light weight nylon straps on other harnesses, even had to try a cat harness due to her small size. Me; not a sewer, would hand stitch her original cloth one and even used iron on patches to mend it back together.

It finally bit the dust. I could not sew it anymore and still keep her safely secured in it I had found a harness just like this somewhere in my travels after trying many, many brands. I found one just like this and decided to give it a try.

Now this one too has been chewed and sewed (the first one I found like these) but it is much easier to sew a few stitches through the breathable mesh than cotton. I no longer leave her harness on all day which is a bit of a pain, but she is very good about getting it on over her head so it takes little time at all.

I was so happy to have found this harness here on chewy. Actually, there isn’t much I haven’t been able to find here. And at such reasonable prices and FAST delivery. I ordered one in a small and it fits her perfectly, right out of the box.

I don’t understand why the colors other than blue cost more, but even though she is a girl, blue is mommy’s favorite color and I am going to order another one. With a puppy who is a chewer ( by the way this is my first puppy ever so I am shocked at the things she chews)you can’t have enough harnesses to keep a puppy safe! I absolutely recomend. I have a 16 yr old miniature schnauzer and even though he has slowed down just a tad bit because of his obvious age, he is as rambunctious and as active as ever. Because of his breeds long neck I can not walk him with just a collar, in order to prevent bruising or major injury to his neck, they are pullers, regardless of being trained.

I have used many harness brands throughout these many years and even though they were all of greatly good quality, they all would cause bruising around his ribs and shoulder area. A it was hard for me to find a good harness that would actually fit him perfectly snug without causing him discomfort from chaffing, cutting into his skin and leaving open sores and blisters from his pulling after our long walks, but others would be to big and even pulling the adjusting tags were still leaving the harness extremely loose, which would make our park walks not so fun especially with other dogs were around(can you say napoleon syndrome lol).

So our vet recommended this harness, and I have not gone back to any other. It not on fit him perfectly, but it gave him the compression that he needed to calm him down and be able to be controlled while around other dogs.

This is an absolute life changer.

CALL the 1-800 # for help before attempting to get this crate together! I had to email the rep. photos in order to get her to understand the issues I was having (a very patient and kind woman). She will tell you about a video on YouTube, too.

Unless you have immense hand strength, this crate is very hard to set up. I hurt myself struggling with it. There was some cursing involved. I only wish the very $$$$ Revol crate would be available in the Medium size in time for me to get one for my new puppy.

(They wont be available until December!) I would gladly pay that to have such a great crate for the rest of my dog’s life. As it is with this Midwest one, my fingers hurt, the enamel was already chipped when I removed it from the carton, and I seriously doubt I will ever be able to remove the divider panel when my puppy grows! Plus, the black paint is harsh, to me.

But I couldn’t find a 30” crate with side door + divider panel in white. My 21 year old crate is white! What gives?!!!.

I own two of the Dean and Tyler harnesses. They are both an XL. one is quite a bit larger than the other. The one I bought through Amazon is a bigger than the one I go on EBay. As far as quality goes, the harness is a great harness.

I would highly recommend it. We have two very large dogs. One is a German Shepherd that goes about 140 pounds and one is a Mastador still growing. I feel like with this harness on you have complete and total control of the dog.

The patches are great, you can get whatever you need them to say. Both dogs seem to understand when wearing the harness that they are “working” and that it isn’t all fun and games any longer. Would highly recommend the harness just not sure how the size can fluctuate so much between two harnesses that are to be identical.

Oh my goodness. I’ve never had a husky puppy before but let me tell you. This harness has been a life safer. It keeps loki the husky pup right next to me without pulling his neck.

Sadly I had to return the harness as i hadn’t accurately measured my dog. However I do now have the correct size from another site. Seller was helpful and the product arrived quickly. I have a 42kg gsd/husky mix.

Very strong and pulls towards other dogs and prey animals. This harness looks great and is well made, the 4 d rings mean it’s great for redirecting him if he pulls when teamed with a double ended leash, and most inportantly it is secure and comfortable for my boy! We love it!.

We ordered this online and were surprised by the item we picked up. Looks totally different and the sizing on pack is dramatically different from what is shown in the product image online. Our dog is in the middle of the ranges listed for “Small” by the sizing chart online, but was too big for the item we received which quoted his size measurement at the very top end.

Separately, this thing is not easy to use. It’s got a pull tie closure and we could not figure out how to get the dog into it had it been his right size. There are instructions on the back with images that help but our dog would not let us take the time to put on like that.

The page made it seem more like a step through harness which we wanted.

Have purchased several harnesses as my pitbull has grown. This is by far the best. Fits well and allows plenty of room for growth. Pup appears comfortable in it. Allows the dog walker more control. Would recommend.

I have bought many harnesses for our 11 pound shihtzu but was not happy with any. Some she could walk out of. Some were rough and looked uncomfortable. I read the reviews for this harness and decided to try one more time.

It is perfect. It is soft and cushioned under her legs and can be pulled snug when on leash if needed. The only inconvenience is that the strap on top where it is adjusted is about 6 inches long and bothers her when hanging loose, so I can’t leave it on all day.

I have looped it back over her head and tucked it into the vest occasionally. That works, but she can pull it out and chew it. I highly recommend this harness.

I love this product. I have 5 dogs. From toy poodle to labrador. Ranging from Puppy to adult. Each one has this harness. This harness is the Best. It is made up of soft fabric, but sturdy. The part by the neck to around the legs has extra cushioning to stop rubbing, and sores.

It also has a handle on top, which is very handy. The only thing that is wrong with this harness is that it has a velcro patch that states service dog. The solution is simple just take off the patch.

My dog is medium size. I would say is she can escape and wriggle out of it quick easy ! So not safe at all ! also it’s should sit on her chest but sits near her neck ! I wouldn’t recommend this as it’s not secure enough.

I can’t recommend this enough! I bought this product about 1. 5years ago and I can vouch that it is an absolutely awesome product. My dog (30-33kg) went from being a very strong puller that was dragging me along and practically choking himself during walks, and I mean that because, he used to make this awful gasping/choking sound when he was pulling on walks.

To a beautiful walker on lead, he rarely pulls, and walks beautifully by my side. I’d tried training him, tried to do all sorts of stuff to make him stop but nothing really worked, so I tried this harness out.

It’s made a huge difference from day 1, because he walks so easily and he no longer makes that awful sound. I only clip him onto the front attachment because this attachment works on the concept of circular motion (angular momentum), so if he ever does pull hard on lead he is swivelled around to face me, stopping him from pulling me along.

This concept would also work if you hook onto both front and back attachments. If you hook onto the back attachment only you are in essence supporting your dog when they pull, this is due to triangular forces and the concept of linear motion (i.

e. when they pull forward, all the forces follow that, so the motion of force is forward), ideal for sledding dogs. That’s why a front attaching harness is ideal for dogs that pull, when you don’t want them to.

The back attachment is also great but I only use it with his seatbelt in the car. This harness is incredibly durable, after 1. 5 yrs of daily use it still shows little to no wear and tear. My dog used to be able to wriggle out of front attachment harnesses, but he can’t with this harness.

He walks perfectly now and I literally can not leave the house without it, its reliable and not once in 1. 5yrs has it failed me. Just one thing to note, when using the front clip, if your dog pulls and you keep walking with them, it will reduce the force but will still allow them to move forward, but if you stop walking and they pull, it will literally swivel them around and stop them.

So I would say its a really great product, its just a matter of understanding how to use it.

Does not work! I have a 12 mth old, 30kg Labradoodle who pulls! This does not work whether I tether from the front of the harness or at the rear. If he pulls sideways or backwards the whole harness loosens at the clasp and there is too much elasticity in the harness that it allows for zero control when he decides to go rogue sniffing and or pulling toward other dogs! Do not recommend this product at all Particularly for strong larger breeds! I have more control with a standard lead.

I persisted for a week and used treats. Would love a refund!.

A nice enough harness, which is easy to put on / take off. It definitely didn’t stop, or even discourage, any pulling by our pup and not sure that it gave us more control while on walks either. I did like the soft springy ropes that go under the legs as the stopping mechanism.

Although it didn’t stop the pulling, it seems like a gentler way to pull-back on a dog than other harnesses. A warning to owners of long-haired dogs (ours is a groodle) – this harness will tangle the fur in it’s ‘stop pull’ mechanism and left our pup with pretty ratty looking fur on her back as a result.

Probably wouldn’t buy again or recommend it, but not the worst thing I’ve bought either.

my babies are beagles about 1 year old. I rescued them from a kill shelter. I love them dearly and they love the harnesses. They are still growing and there is plenty of room to expand the harnesses as they do.

We have a French Bulldog, full/AKC sized one. We measured her chest as instructed and she could use the extra small or small according to the site. She is a rescue and has never been leash trained so we thought the extra small might be the better bet since she pulls all the time.

Once we got it, we found that even with all buckles except the chest buckle as tight as they will go (the chest buckle is almost fully extended) it would not fit right over her muscles as the online video showed and was very tight under her legs.

We then ordered a small for her. We can’t get the buckles tight enough so the part that is supposed to be over the leg muscle ends up working down to her elbow on one side when she pulls. This trips her up and once she stepped out of it.

We have been using the extra small as she is dog and bicycle aggressive, and we must have complete control over her but don’t leave it on her as it rubs under her legs. This harness has kept her from pulling so hard and has spun her around when she went after another dog.

Excellent concept but not designed for some breeds body shapes.

I really really wanted to like this harness. My lab/pit doesn’t so much “pull” as she is just a speed walker. I’ve tried just about everything to curb this insistent need to be ahead of me. I’ve tried various collars, harnesses, head leads, and even took her to training classes.

That and because my dog had an odd barrel shaped chest trying to get a good measurement for her often doesn’t go too well, and as much as I wanted in like this harness all it ended up doing was leaving bad sores under her armpits, which isn’t so much the fault of the product as much as it’s the fault of my dog who insists on being ahead of me no matter how fast I walk (and I tend to walk at the pace of a light jog!) Alas I’ve just put her back in her old harness, but perhaps when she’s older and has hopefully calmed down, I can then put her in something like this.

Again, this is a great product I’m sure, just not for me.

This is the second one I purchased. Zoey chewed the first one up. I like this harness because she doesn’t look consumed by the harness. It gives her great support overall but it doesn’t look like I have a sweater on her.

Other harnesses have more material to it, and after getting wet, start to smell. This one has just what you need and it dries quickly. I also like that it lays across her chest and not around her neck.

Zoey tends to want to pull on the harness so this keeps her secure but does not injure her.
