20 Best Hand Crank Grain Mill (2023 Updated)

We use this mainly for coffee beans but have also used it for small seeds (flax). It gets used frequently. It is robust, well made, nicely finished, easy to wash, works well and can be fun to use for small batches.

A slight drawback: we found that coffee grindings tend to fly around on exit, scattering beyond our collecting bowl beneath. However we came up with an easy fix and that was to pop a small freezer bag over the outlet, clipped on with an elastic band – works a treat.

We have had another grinder for years which we use for nuts and, as with that one, we find a thin slip of leather between clamp and work surface improves the grip.

I did research and shopping for a small anvil. The product description seemed good and the price was also good (approx $65). I also ran across another of their ads that appeared to be the exact same product but presented in another way.

It also cost substantially more (approx $130). Two days after the order was confirmed I get an alert saying my purchase has been refunded and the order cancelled because the product is out of stock. The ad i ordered from can no longer be found but the higher priced one is still on the net.

I LOVE my mill! I was very very nervous making such a big purchase , BUT now am very happy I did! This mill is so easy to use , works absolutely perfect, with the range of options available for floor texture and so on.

Years ago we had a grain mill. It worked very easily and amazingly. This one, however, we are not real pleased with. It is an extra step to remove the base once the wheat is ground and when putting in the base the mill has to be slightly lifted to use.

We also do not like that the lid to the base has to be twisted on and is not easy to do. I would not recommend this mill to anyone. I wish I could return mine.

This may be an older model mill however the encapsulated bowl capacity of this mill is why I purchased. easy to operate, clean, and store. The fact it is one piece that can be broken down was also a selling point for me.

following the owner s manual (which also provided educational materials on the different grains) this product should last for many years! So pleased with my purchase and a big THANK YOU to the previous owner for taking such good care of this NutriMill.

Now that we have used the mill, it will be used a lot because it is so much quieter than our previous one. In fact we wish that there would be another recepticle bin with even greater capacity alowing more or larger bread batches and excess to be frozen.

the reaason for thi is also becuase our grin storge is one floor down from the mill. Fewer trips and openning the grain contaainers is such an inconvenient chore.

I have just begun using my Wondermill, which I bought using a promotional discount code. At first, I ran mostly brown rice, and a small amount of einkorn, through the mill to decrease the contaminants from manufacturing.

Then, I ended up using the Bread setting to grind einkorn, which is rather expensive low-gluten wheat. I notice it is a bit hard to clean the opening in the side of the mill, which connects to the pipe for the canister lid, but I have bought brushes for that purpose, and I plan to use my vacuum cleaner.

The canister, canister lid, and cup can be washed in the dishwasher on the top rack. All in all, I’m relieved that I don’t have to use my NutriBullet blender or food processor to grind grains, nor do I have to worry about flour getting all over the place, unless I put it into other containers.

I purchased the mill to grind my own fine rice flour for gluten free baking. It does a good job double grinding long grain rice , but the separator lid pops off during the grinding process, shooting flour dust everywhere.

I must hold the lid down to finish the batch, which isnt easy since the lid becomes very warm during grinding, and there is a filtered opening expelling hot air in the center of the lid. I hope the company returns my call and has done suggestions.

I’ve owned Barley Crusher and recently a Cereal Killer mills. Both are 2 roller mills with smaller diameter aluminum rollers. I bought this mill because the Cereal Killer was tearing up the grain husks and I was getting slow sparges and almost stuck mashes on my Grainfather (which is pretty sensitive to grain crush).

The crush with the mill is really good. The grain is crushed but the husks are in tact for the most part. I get better sparging and my recirculating mashes circulate through the grain very well and the efficiency hasn’t changed.

This mill weighs quite a bit more than the Cereal Killer due to the steel rollers, and the thick, steel base. I used the adjustment out of the box which works well. Adjusting the gap on this looks like it could be difficult.

Also, I use the old hand crank method and it’s quicker and easier than the Cereal Killer. The steel base is nice and thick and provides a good framework for the mill. It works well over a bucket if you hold it down while you’re milling.

The hopper took a little while to put together, but not a big deal. I got a good price on it too, so it was a good purchase.

I’ve only used it once but it did an excellent crush. Assembly was easy EXCEPT removing the protective film. The way that the parts are packaged there is no need for the film in the first place. Easy to adjust but don’t trust the measurement markings on the side – they’re way off.

Use a “feeler” gauge to get it right. This 3 roller mill requires more torque than my old non-adjustable 2 roller. Make sure that your drill batteries are fully charged if you’re doing a fine crush.

I bought this mill to crush my own grains. The first thing that got my attention was how heavy and sturdy it was. It works smoothly and does an excellent job of milling. The only knock on this product is that it did not come with instructions for assembling the hopper.

I was able to download them from the internet and once I saw how it goes together it was pretty simple.

The bottom line is that the mill grinds fast, and well, and looks good on our counter. The long version. We have been grinding with a Country Living Grain Mill for decades, love it. The decision to admit our age and go to an electric mill wasn’t easy.

We have ground about 5 pounds of Hard white wheat so far, bread flour comes out perfect, I use a 40 sieve, and am more then pleased with the results. It is louder then I expected when milling, but my phone says it’s exactly 70db, which is what the factory says it is.

When I tried to get support, I was treated very rudely and AgriEuro did not provide any resolution. I downloaded the English manual from the internet and with regard to the plug I am using it with a converter now.

With plenty of time during quarantine, I researched buying a different & upgraded mill to process wheat berries. I fell in love with the beautiful KoMo and was able to purchase one from Extreme Wellness Supplies.

It was a challenge procuring it from Germany because of the Pandemic. Thankfully it finally arrived & I have had a fabulous time grinding wheat into delicate flours. It was a great buy!.

I have had this Blendtec Kitchen Mill for about several months and use a spelt & kamut blend just about every week. The grain mill makes a clicking sound sometimes that makes me feel like it’s going to break any minute, but it hasn’t yet! It is fairly loud, but it grinds so quickly that’s not really an issue for me.

Also, the clamps that hold the lid on are tough to remove, so much that one side got a little crack when I tried to unhook it. It still locks in place, but I’m sure that will break at some point in the future.

I seriously love having this Blendtec flour mill although I think they could have done a couple things to make it more durable. I hope it lasts me for years like some of the other posters have said. I came from a hand grinding mill which was way way way too time consuming to imagine doing weekly.

With this Blendtec mill, I can make flour at any time I want without worrying that it will take a long time. Despite the problems, I think it’s worth the money over any of the more expensive mills.

I grind wheat to make bread. The texture of the flours is like stone ground. I have also made corn meal. Well worth the price. I love how easily I can take it from the cupboard, grind the wheat, quickly clean the unit and return it to the cupboard.

The best grinder I’ve found: easy to fill, operate; good grinder settings; pleasant design. I’ve only been using it for a couple of weeks, so we’ll see how performs over time, but I’m confident. Manufacturing and materials are top notch.

I really like this grinder with the hand crank. I have been using a Peugeot grinder for over 10 years and this is a marked improvement over the ball knob for grinding. This new grinder also has the U-Select system which is really a great improvement over the little brass thumb knob for grind size adjustments.

Great beside the stove! The chef loves it. You should sell black and white sets with white for salt — you didn’t so we made our own set and ordered blonde wood of the same model,for salt.

The EVELYNE coffee grinder is made of quality iron and steel components and has a nice appearance. It is excellent for display purposes, but it is not of much use to actually grind coffee. On average it take about 7 minutes of cranking to get enough ground coffee to make 1 cup of coffee.

I am basing this on filling a K-cup. If you are looking for a decoration, BUY IT! If you are looking for function, keep looking.

I bought it to decorate a countertop corner in my kitchen. It’s a little small for that particular space but charming nonetheless. It works although I won’t use it.

This is a simple, easy to use people-powered devise. I like that it is stainless steel and compact. I tested it with popcorn kernels to make cornmeal. It worked great! I haven’t purchased any other bulk grains yet but will now that I have my own grain mill.

It’s something every prepper, homesteader, or household should have on hand.

Seems like a good quality grain mill. The trick is finding the right table. My kitchen island is too thick and my glass kitchen table is less than ideal. It turns out my tv stand fits it perfectly. Don’t forget to discard the first 2-3 cups of grain.

The flour it produced was excellent quality.

I have wanted to try out a grain mill for some time. Most are a big investment. This mill allowed me to try out milling my own grain to see how much of a difference it made. It requires some “elbow grease” but I was satisfied with the end results!.

It’s pretty rough around the edges. After cleaning and grinding some cheap beans (to get any manufacturing residue or loose bit out), there was still a bit of a grinding sound, even when empty. That said, I wasn’t able to find any metal in my food, so I’m not too worried.

The hopper also has a bit of a gap between it and the mill body when it’s mounted; liquid will leak through that gap. The grind is fairly coarse and it’s pretty time consuming to mill fresh nixtamal, but I’ve used other hand mills so that wasn’t unexpected.

Just make sure to set aside at least an hour if you want to do a few passes, even on a small amount of corn. Definitely expect to use a spoon or some sort of rod to shove masa into the auger. The tortillas I made were very tasty, certainly some of the best I’ve ever had.

I couldn’t get them to puff, but this could be a variety of factors apart from the mill (I’m pretty new to this). In the end, it worked better than even a nice food processor for making masa. I’ve never had a chance to try one, but I’d imagine a metate y mano would be even harder; it certainly gives an appreciation for how hard people must have worked for their masa back in the day.

I like the deep hopper and the ease of putting it together. I don’t like that it’s not able to clamp to thicker surfaces like my kitchen island or countertop so I had to settle for clamping it to a lesser stable surface.

It can get a little messy even with the guard that’s provided. It’s good for small jobs, the masa came out great and I would recommend it for small batch home use.

A bit of a learning curve to get good results but satisfactory results for the price point. Was making decent tortillas with first attempt. Will try to perfect technique to get puff.

I am rating this product on what it is – a manual grain mill. I am not rating it based on what features it does not have or should have to make it easier or faster to use. If you want easier or faster, perhaps you should buy the necessary accessories to convert it to an electric mill and then rate it accordingly.

This product is a wonderful, well-crafted manually-operated grain mill. It is easy to set up and use. It actually ground better and easier than what I was expecting. But it is manual so it does take some effort.

Your mileage may vary based on your physical ability/endurance. I especially like the sturdy post clamp that keeps the base from moving around as the handle is turned. I have already used my mill a few times with great success.

I am very impressed with how easily you can change different textures and grinds. It really works as advertised only better for a hand mill. I purchased the Wonder Junior Deluxe Plus Package for back up emergencies but I like the idea of being able to grind my own grains/seeds on demand.

I will use it often to grind just enough for what I need when I need it.

I have waited for this mill to come back in stock and when I received the email notification that it was available I ordered it immediately. I have checked out a lot of reviews on this item and was impressed with its quality….

if the power goes out I will be prepared. I tried it out on wheat, barley, oats & peas for my chickens. Did a good job…. peas are a workout though. I would recommend this product. The only drawback was putting it together, the manual wasn’t clear.

Check out the videos on line. Love the colour …. mine is red. I added a plastic lid from a yogurt container on top and placed a ceramic lid on that to keep out any bugs when not in use. I keep it out as it looks so nice! Can now grind my own rice, flax and gluten free grains.

I made peanut butter the first day we got it! I have also milled wheat and oats with it. Looking forward to trying other things. Used the stainless steel for the peanut butter, stones for the grains.

It is a slow process and you will get a pretty good workout on your arms. But if power goes out at least you will be able to make food. It was easy to set up, easy to break down and clean. I am going to try the drill adapter to speed up the process.

The Wondermill jr. is a little pricey but I think it is worth it. Looking forward to years of use.

My Mockmill 200 grinds the finest whole grain flour I have ever seen. set on the finest setting, the flour is as fine as talcum powder. I used to have a Royal Lee grain mill but the Mockmill finds even finer flour than the Royal Lee without themes and lengthy cleanup go the Royal Lee.

Also, the Royal Lee left a gluey gluten residue when I used it for fine flour. The Mockmill is easy to clean and does not leave the gluey residue. As A result the Mockmill is the the BEST grain mill I have ever used.

I have already used my Mockmill for three “projects. The first was to grind a 50% mixture of Turkey Red and Red Fife for a Hearth Bread adapted from Peter Reinhart’s book on whole grain baking. The texture of the bread was superior due to the finest grind possible with the Mockmill.

The flavor was excellent as well. My second project was to grind a 50% mixture of buckwheat and soft white wheat to make pancakes. The pancakes were quite fluffy, considering the fact that they were made with 100% whole grain.

They tasted great as well. My third project was to grind some Kamut on a coarse setting and use the result for hot cereal. Again, I had a great result Given the way my Mockmill behaved for these three projects, I can safely say that the machine was the best and most versatile mill I have ever used.

It has my most enthusiastic recommendation.

Really happy with this mill. Its strong and good quality. I have milled oat flour and also brown rice flour. It’s courser than shop bought flour but still great and I quite like it course. The only thing I would change is to make more space underneath the shoot where the flour comes out.

You have to either hang it over the side of a table or put a low bowl or plate underneath. Ten or of ten from me otherwise though.

I bought this to roll oats. Pros: Many different thickness settings. Can crush it finer (like quick oats). Looks nice and is solid. Cons: A free pieces of oats will dark through not processed. You can throw them back in though and roll them.

It’s annoying, but not so much that it’s worth buying a more expensive one. It’s a little tricky to clean, unless your just brushing it clean. Rollers are made of aluminum.

Good afternoon: Last year, around sometime in November I inquired about using one of the grain mill grinders you offer for a rather different application. I wanted to grind up glass pieces to make “frit” and glass powder to use in my glass fusing studio.

After doing my research I finally ordered my smaller unit from you. It arrived in Port Huron a couple of days ago and today I went and picked it up. Set it up and tried it!!! At this point, I am very pleased with the results.

It took no more than 5-8 seconds to take a glass and produce frit. I have a series of screens to filter the glass frit into 4 different sizes: coarse, med. fine and powder. See the photos attached. At this point, I will be watching for metal findings in the glass and use a magnet to remove them.

There was very little from the first test batch, thus the blades should last quite a while which was a concern of mine. Thank you for your help prior to my purchasing this unit. I will be sharing this information with other glass artists.

Yes, we can purchase frit from most glass suppliers, however, sometimes we want some of the different glass available in frit that is not available-so now I can make my own. Best regards.

When I first read the product reviews, I had a bit of trepidation about this product, but I ordered it anyway. I’m using it exclusively for spice grinding and it’s excellent. We are grinding our own cinnamon, which tastes completely different from old, pre-ground, store-bought ground cinnamon.

I purchased the RRH 200A Grain Mill grinder specifically to grind dry ginseng roots, after having destroyed three Cuisinart nut and spice grinders trying to grind these extremely hard roots. The Grain Mill grinder is a heavy duty, rugged and powerful machine that not only handles the ginseng roots easily, but also grinds dry Chaga and Reishi mushrooms.

I am highly impressed with this relatively inexpensive machine!.

I love this mill, but want to inform others considering one. This mill is attractive so if you plan to keep it out in plain site, it’s a great choice. But being made of bamboo, it breaks VERY easily.

My first one came broken and I couldn’t even tell that the box had been dropped in shipping until I really investigated and saw the crumpled corner of the boxes (interior and exterior). It wouldn’t grind and when I set about examining it, I came to see that the bamboo base was broken, as well as the mill housing.

Extreme Wellness and Nutrimill gave GREAT customer service for the record, and replaced it no problem, so that was wonderful! The mill operates well, but remember, it has no bowl. It is EASY to get busy and turn it on before you have a bowl under it.

The bowl fills up quickly, so you need to babysit it and turn the bowl so the flour doesn’t back up into the chute. And it cannot start with grain in it. You must start it and THEN add grain. I knew all of these things about the operation and the bowl.

I didn’t think through how easily bamboo breaks and I have no counter space to keep it on my counter. I put it back in the pantry. I am a nervous baker every time I move it because it’s a bit unwieldy and top-heavy and I’m afraid I will break it.

It’s very expensive for something made of such a poor wood choice. I only wish I had thought of that beforehand. So, if you are fine with all these caveats, it seems like a fine mill. One final positive in my opinion: this one is EASY to clean up! My Nutrimill Classic is a bit of a pain when I am in a hurry.

So my quest for even better bread continues. As part of this journey I splurged on a flour mill. This NutriMill Harvest is good looking product but the useability is not great. I want fine flour. To get there you are supposed to wind the ‘Easy Adjust’ dial until the stones lock, then back off a little.

This is easier said than done. So, using the ‘Not-So-Easy Adjust’ I’ve had a few goes at making fine flour without luck. Actually, let me be a bit more specific. I don’t want super-fine flour, I just don’t want grit.

To help with the adjustment there is a red visual indicator on the top rotating ring while the accompanying the graphics on the lower fixed ring are black on black. I used a magnifying glass and flashlight to read it.

It didn’t help. So I guess it’s trial and error to get the flour you want. In summary; it’s a good looking product, well made, compact in dimension, reasonably priced but with a learning curve. If you like to make bread you are more than familiar with that, this mill adds one more interesting variable.

Would I buy it again? yes I think I would.

This has been the best transaction I have ever had with an online order. There was a problem with the first delivery. How a company takes care of problems is what makes them a great company. Extreme Wellness Supply and Nutrimill went far beyond anything I have ever seen to make this a perfect transaction.

I highly recommend both companies. The mill is fantastic. The best bread we have ever baked. The taste is something I have rarely experienced. I moved here from Germany where we have excellent bakeries but baking it fresh is even batter.

I bought this to grind spices to powder. The first and so far the only time I used it was to grind dried long red cayenne peppers to powder. It worked great and I look forward to the end of the summer where I will put it to use grinding other spices.

Have to grow the spices first :).

I ground about a pound of soft white wheat berries. The grinder got scary hot as I was grinding the seeds. I kept stopping to let it cool down. Otherwise machine worked great. Milled my flour, sifted out the majority of the bran and used the flour to make bread.

It turned out really well.

I really like how fast this machine can grind wheat into flour. So many other machines cost three times more than this one and yet the ADL performed just as well as the other machines. The benefit outweighs the cost.
