20 Best Hairspray For Dry Hair (2023 Updated)

Big Sexy Hair Get Layered used to be my daily hair spray for many years because of it’s great flexible hold, brushable styling, quick drying, value, and non-offensive smell. Sadly I’m on a hunt to find a new “go to” hair spray.

It’s become sticky, crunchy, doesn’t spray evenly, globs into spots that don’t dry well, and the nozzle clogs after just a few uses. I’ve tried rinsing the nozzle, wiping it after every single use, and even poking the sprayer hole with a pin, but it continually clogs on every single bottle.

I can’t stand crunchy, plastered hair, but this is what Big Sexy Get Layered has been for the last several months. I bought 10 cans on sale, so I will stubbornly and regretfully use them until I find a decent replacement.

I purchased this based on videos on the company website. I typically use Play Harder, but find it can be pretty stiff, hard to comb and wash out. At first, I was like “is anything even coming out”- the mist is so fine it feels like it is evaporating in the air.

But that is the thing- the mist is really fine and dries super quick. It is different that anything I have ever used. I am a “heavy hairspray, big hair” kind of girl- but as I am getting older, my hair is getting thinner, styles change, etc.

and am finding that hairspray is weighing my hair down or drying my hair out. This is less drying and sort of fun to play with. For me (with thinning, mature hair) I find that if I lift up my hair and spray from underneath and sort of scrunch with my hands, I can get some super volume.

It gives it some hold/grit so I can under-tease it a little, then comb it/style it where I want and then spray in short spurts to hold it in place. I really, really like that because it dissipates so quickly, there is less spray residue on my countertops and bathroom floor- and it brushes out/washes out of my hair much easier.

I can even get an extra day without washing my hair, curl it the next day with better hold sort of thing. Plus, the smell isn’t overwhelming at all. Overall, it is worth the price and I am now using this instead of my other hairsprays.

This used to be my go-to favorite for hairspray. Now every time I’ve bought a bottle, the nozzle clogs up all the time and it either sprays unevenly or not at all. It also seems the formula may have changed.

Although it’s still a flash-dry spray, it leaves my hair crunchy and dry and weighs it down. It doesn’t hold the style all day anymore. Super disappointed in the quality and actually returned the last bottle as a result.

A friend recommended this to me. I had never heard of it. Since I cannot spray it directly on my hair because of problems with my hands, I spray it on my fingers and then work it through my hair. Its pretty easy to avoid over-applying by doing it that way.

Then I still have to use a little hairspray because I have really fine straight hair. I wash my hair three times a week. What has really impressed me has been the way my short hair looks when I get out of bed and how it behaves on the days that I do not wash it.

I am a big fan of this product. It adds thickness and body. Thats a miracle for my fine, thin, straight hair. You can also refresh it just by touching it up with wet fingers. Its great.

I have been using this product for a number of years. This product works well on my fine hair. It is not sticky and keeps my style in all day. It brushes and washes out without leaving any residue.

I have used the Paul Mitchell Fast Drying Sculpting Spray for years. I like that the product holds the hair in place, yet doesn’t appear to make the hair look too “stiff”. I will continue to purchase this product as long as Paul Mitchell continues to make it!! KLF.

Perfect hairspray for me. Coarse, frizzy hair that I like to wear straight. Frequently foiled by the slightest humidity. This smooths with a nice finish and is moveable/brushable without feeling like you’re breaking your hair.

Paul Mitchell recently discontinued their Marula line and that hairspray was my go to. Have been experimenting all summer for for sprays containing some oil. This is the clear winner. Back today to order two more bottles!.

Shocked that I love this, ’cause I detest the texture of hairspray – sticky, hard, and matte. This has enough hold to smooth frizzes and tame flyaways, but leaves hair super touchable with amazing shine.

The mist is super fine and doesn’t create an oil slick, no matter how much I use. The scent is a bit sweet, for my taste. I wish it were more fruity, but it doesn’t linger very long. Another product that Kenra has knocked out of the park.

Sadly this was such a heavy spray that it made all my curls go completely straight within an hour of curling my hair. I will say it gave my hair a nice shine but it was such a stiff spray, more like a very heavy hairspray, so it is not the type of product I would use to shine a “down” hairstyle (meaning not up in a ponytail/barrette/updo).

I think this would be a product best used for updo’s that are pinned (bobby-pin) and don’t have to worry about the style falling.

This is the best hairspray ever! John Sahag products smell amazing. But this hairspray is one of a kind. I use it for texture by spraying into hair and using your blow dryer to move hair while spraying.

This is how you add volume and texture. It has memory, so after spraying for texture, finger style in desired look then finish off with an all over spray. This is not stiff or sticky. Just amazing. Now go out in the wind or take a nap.

Check out your hair! Wow! Looks even better! You can spray as needed throughout the day if style happens to need refreshing, or brush out with no flaking. It is the only hairspray that is perfect for both styling and finishing and the only one I will use.

This is one of my favorite hair sprays ever! I love the smell and how soft my curls feel. I doesnt make my hair feel disgusting or like it has a ton of buildup after using. I will always buy this as long as I’m able!.

While I have yet to use this purchase, I have used this hair spray for many years and it is the best as far as light hold, and the ability to restyle, also my hair is super fine, it holds and tames flyaways, without weighing hair down.

Bonus can also be used to give hair a lift if sprayed under hair!.

I love this product and it really gives super volume while keeping your hair in place. It’s not too expensive for the product you are getting. I buy this at TJ Maxx on sale. This actually met my expectations and beyond.

It has a great grape 🍇 fruity smell that I like a lot. I would definitely recommend this to anyone with thick or thin hair. Definitely great for oily hair.

This is the best hairspray I have ever used! First of all, I love the smell. It reminds me of grape pez. I always get told I smell amazing when I use it. Second, it has great hold without being sticky or tacky.

I can do an up-do or style my hair down, spray and know that my hair will behave. Which is asking a whole lot of my misfit hair because it is not known for staying where I left it.

I love this Oribe dry texturizing spray, I use it every day and couldn’t be without it. I have used it for almost 10 years and can’t see that I will be changing to anything else anytime soon! This gives great volume and body at the roots and stops my long hair from looking flat at the top.

It seems to make my hair look and feel much thicker. I find I get the best results when I spray into my roots after blowdrying clean hair. It gives lots of lift, grip, and hold and as a bonus stops my hair from becoming greasy as I spray it in from clean.

My second-day hair looks great, not lifeless! Highly recommend it, even given the price tag! I have tried so many other sprays in an attempt to find a cheaper alternative but none have been anywhere near as good as this one.

I’m not a huge fan of the smell on first spray, its a bit sweet for me, but I find it dissipates after a while. Everyone always compliments that my hair smells lovely though! Also great for keratin-treated hair like mine, as it doesn’t have sulfates and other nasties that strip the treatment from your hair.

It’s great but *Anne Perkins voice* AT WHAT COST? (About $48 dollars give or take. ) The price aside, the product is really great. I will say, I HIGHLY recommend this for people with thin, straight or curly hair.

For those with frizzy hair, I’d definitely say steer clear, or use this when styling hair, not something you’d just casually add (because, think about it, adding texture/volume to frizzy hair just makes it look … more frizzy).

Now, if you’ve got straight hair or if you’ve straightened your hair and you don’t want it to look super flat? This is your best friend. This product is good at giving all over grit (great for braiding and such too!) while also providing a very light hold.

It gives you this almost windswept look without any sort of tacky feeling, which I REALLY appreciate. No white cast or sticky-ness here, which are dealbreakers for me. This stuff also smells AMAZING which is always a plus and something I love to see in hair products.

This spray is light, gives your hair texture and volume, while still allowing your hair to have movement (your hair doesn’t feel stiff or gross). There isn’t much of a hold which, for me, is a plus but something some people might want.

It’s great because it can also be used as a very very gentle hairspray. The brand also suggests using this as a dry shampoo which I tried, it was good, but not the best so not something I’d suggest using this for consistently but I like that is has multiple uses.

I suggest using this product by either holding your head upside-down and spraying into the roots/a little around, then run your fingers through your hair to distribute the product evenly and create volume (think a tousled kind of look).

The other way I have found I like it for less OOMPH but still a look is spraying a tiny bit in your hands and then distributing that evenly by running your hands through your hair. This can cause a tiny bit of dryness if over-used (as most sprays do) so just be aware of that.

Still, gorgeous product that smells amazing and really does what it says it does, giving your hair gorgeous volume and texture.

OK, I’ll be honest. Opening the box this came in, then pulling the long and luxury-feeling, full-size bottle out of the bag made me feel like a new car owner must feel when they first drive their Mercedes off of the lot.

It felt glamorous; well-packaged, well-designed, and. well, just luxurious and glamorous all the way around. I was SO, SO, SO excited to get this in my Oribe VoxBox and just delighted to give it a go.

Even though I had washed my hair that day, I gave it a spin and sprayed it on the roots. This experience was. a unique and gratifying one. The smell itself just oozed luxury and class. The smell is high-end and not unlike a top shelf perfume.

The volume it provides is enjoyable. I especially liked the way it made my hair feel when I pulled it into a ponytail. It definitely provides texture and that extra “oomph” that freshly clean hair does not offer.

This is a great product for second (or more) day hair, and also for when wearing one’s hair in a pony or bun. I used this product on my second and third day of unwashed hair, to give it a whirl. (With the disclaimer, of course—that I have seldom found a dry shampoo that I feel is both effective and non-irritating to my sinuses/eyes.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of the way it absorbed oil (I have very fine hair and it can be finicky). I did absolutely love the texture it gave my hair, though—so I will say this is a fantastic product for adding “oomph” and that extra something to hair for styling either every day, or on sequential non-shampoo days.

Overall? 5 out of 5 stars. This is a quality product, with a quality scent, no irritation to my sinuses (nothing short of a miracle). I would not use this by itself in place of dry shampoo, but it works amazingly well to compliment and accompany a second product designed for absorbing oil.

I really like how this texture spray performs, I use it for extra volume. I have naturally wavy hair (2B/2C) that is very soft and fine. I style as usual with gel on my soaking wet hair, then after it’s completely dry and I’ve scrunched out the crunch, I use this spray by lifting up layers of my hair and spraying underneath near my roots, then I add a little more down they lengths of my hair mostly focusing on just the top 2/3 since the ends tend to get a bit dry sometimes.

This spray really gives me lots of extra volume, and it’s lasts the entire day! I don’t love how my hair feels after the spray dries, it feels a little rough and gritty but then again, that’s probably how all texturizing spray feels.

It doesn’t bother me too much because I try to touch my hair as little as possible anyway, otherwise it’s frizz central over here! This product is the only thing that will give me successful Day 2 hair (sometimes even Day 3!) without completely wetting my hair down and starting from square one.

Without it, my waves/curls look flattened and limp unless I re-wash/re-style. On day 2 I just get my hands wet and glaze them over my hair a few times, then scrunch a few times and it reactivates the product enough that I don’t need to apply more.

I first experienced this spray when my hair stylist (who specializes in curly girl cutting and styling) used it when she cut my hair. I loved how my hair looked that day so I bought the travel size to try it out and see if I could get the same results (and I did!).

I plan on buying the full size bottle once my travel size runs out. It smells great too and my boyfriend commented that he liked the smell.

This product has saved my thin, flat hair. I use multiple Kenra products which include the blow dry mist thermal mist, hair spray, thickening shampoo and conditioner, hair thickening glaze, root lifter spray and air dry creme.

I love all of their products to be honest and they all have given my natural and oily hair life again. If I was stranded on a desert island and could only bring one thing, it would be the dry texture spray.

This spray is light, non sticky, leaves your hair touchable. I have never received compliments on my hair before, but thanks to Kenra, now I do. I haven’t tried one Kenra product I do not like. 10/10 would recommend the entire collection.

I do not recommend this product at all! I was trying something new since I have fine hair and heard good things about this brand and I will never use their products again! It instantly melted/burned my hair off!!! I followed the instructions on the bottle you can use before and after styling, I even let it dry before using my hair.

I went to cosmetology school and so this is not something new to me just was trying a different product and I do not recommend at all.

This is definitely a decent hair spray. It didn’t really do a great job of holding my hair but honestly I’ve always had trouble getting my hair to hold no matter what hairspray I’m using so that’s likely my hair’s fault.

It also didn’t make my hair crunchy or anything. However, I just cannot stand the smell of this for some reason. Seems like in other reviews people loved the smell but it was not for me. I have a really sensitive smell and would have to hold my breathe when using this product and hated that I could still smell it in my hair afterward.

To each their own I guess. Definitely suggest buying the travel size to try it out if you’re on the fence. Might work for some people but I personally won’t be buying again.

I put the Nourshing Styling Cream and then the Blowout Concentrate on my hair. After that I sprayed Flex Spray on each section before curling with flat iron. When I was done I brushed thru my hair and had a few snags at the ends and my hair felt dry and dehydrated and normally it does not as the Nourishing Styling Cream and the Blowout Concentrate are PHENOMENAL on my hair! It comes out so silky, smooth, shiny and soft! Since my hair felt so dry that caused me to look at the ingredients of the Flex Spray.

Yikes! The first ingredient is Alcohol Denat. That is SO drying on your hair and will dry your hair out and make it dull if used often. Well my hair can not afford any more dryness. I didn’t even think to look at the ingredients before I purchased, that’s my fault.

I will be returning it.

Is this my favorite hairspray ever? No. It’s fine, although the hold is a little stronger than I expected. But if you’re looking for good hold, it does the job and the scent is neutral, definitely not overpowering it.

But the best thing about it honestly? The nozzle hasn’t clogged yet and I’m almost through a whole can. Can’t say that about the two other brands of hairspray I’ve purchased from Sephora – I actually like those hairsprays better but their nozzles make the can frustrating to use and you’re really paying full price for half the volume because that’s about all I can get.

So the fact that this does the job and I can get it out of the can? Makes this a winner for me right now.

My hairdresser stopped keeping this product so I was forced to source it on-line. Now I always buy two at a time to make sure I never run out. Although it’s described as a powder it really doesn’t feel like it – there is no powdery residue whatsoever.

It is a dry spray that instantly provides body and manageability and allows me to dry style my hair. And most of all it gives the hair SHINE, which considering I have almost white hair, tinted purple thanks to the wonderful Muvo shampoo for blonde hair, is a miracle! I cannot recommend highly enough.

Elevate your hair with Unite Elevate Mousse Volume Mousse. It is great for a full volume soft hair style, frizz free, uv and thermal protection, argon oil making it the perfect mousse. It doesn’t dry out hair like other mousse has in the past.

I find that the argon oil adds shine to my hair also. I recommend Elevate Unite Mousse Volume Foam for a soft moveable hairstyle. If you are looking for a stronger hold this is not the product or add additional product for hold.

This is the best volumizing and texturizing spray. My hair is naturally wavy I put the Blonda oil in it and crunch it. Then when dry I lift up the layers up and spray the Texturizing spray throughout my hair.

So shiney and easy style. Is not sticky. Walmart has the Best Price and yes it’s the Real Stuff made by Unite. 100% AUTHENIC. I have bought it before from Unite and it’s the same product as Walmart. Walmart price is $20.

I received this product for free from Influenster in exchange for my review. While I’m a shampoo junkie, I am not nearly as knowledgeable about styling products. I tend to just grab whatever. This actually makes me realize I need to pay more attention to my finishing products.

It has the signature smell of Biolage without a strong scent of alcohol. It’s light enough to hold down frizz without looking glued down, but also strong enough to hold my “I’m going this way” bangs in place where they should be.

I’ve already used this more in the few weeks I’ve had it than the other hairspray that’s been in my cabinet for a year. This is something I will most definitely buy myself after trying it. I have medium texture, thin hair and this works great for me.

I think it would also work great for fine hair since it’s so effective with my flyaways. I don’t know that it’s Beauty Pageant strong, but it’s not making that claim anyways. I am surprised by how much I use this and for those looking for a good every day hairspray, this is definitely where you should start.

I really like this hairspray, the bottle gives a strong fine mist when sprayed. My unruly bangs stayed in place but didn’t feel “sprayed”, which is ideal for “I need hairspray but don’t want it to feel sprayed”.

There is no unpleasant chemical smell and no “crunchy” or “sticky” hair when used. This is definitely a quality spray and that is easy to tell when used. Even the functionality of the bottle and spray mechanism work very well and the product dispenses in an even fashion.

I have pretty fine, straight, and damaged hair and this worked extremely well. I was able to keep things in place, even flipping my hair around and spraying the roots for more volume, without it looking “sprayed”.

This Biolage hairspray did not do any of that and checked almost every want and need I have in a hairspray. It was invisible in my hair, and I could shake my hair with very minimal movement. I do have to give it 4 stars for its price, as the bottle is small and and $34. 00 if you have longer hair like I do, even though you you only use a few pumps at a time, it does seem to go quick. Someone with shorter hair may not have this problem.

But, also with that, you don’t want to over do it with using more then a few pumps as it will leave your hair looking and feeling oily and greasy. Alterna gifted me their Caviar Anti-Aging Clinical Densifying Scalp Treatment. I used this along with the matching shampoo and conditioner. The nozzle works well to apply this directly to the scalp in sections.

It says to use twice daily and I do not feel any build up, nor does it leave hair crunchy. It is not noticeable at all. After using this a few times my hair does not look like the after picture they show, but it also isn’t professionally styled either and I think that makes the results look more dramatic.

At first I didn’t think there was really much difference at all because I was comparing volume, but when looking at my scalp I noticed it was less visible than usual. I have thin and thinning hair so this has been an improvement.

I will continue to use this set to see if there are longer term results.

I just ran out and the only drawback for me is that I cannot see when it’s almost out, but even a frequent user like me with waist length hair gets a good bang for my buck. Mine lasted a year! Hello. I am in my 50s and a lil “vain” anout my hair. Paul Mitchell has been my go to for decades. They have never let me down. I used the sculpting spray (when was blow drying natural lame waves straighter), their shampoo one is Glorious, and Detangler, love love love.

Buuut, I contacted a severe case of contact dermatitis on my scalp when trying a bonding regime last year from another brand. And, my hair I had been growing out for 15 years turned stick straight, fine and limp.

Oh it gets worse. Then 70% of my huge glorious wavy hair fell out. At least it took a while so luckily I had growth in between. If thats not bad enough, since then I now have mast cell syndrome I can not use this mousse any longer.

Too bad because it would solve all my hair problems. So PM, can you Please make a fragrance free line? Hypoallergenic and minus any of the usual offending essential oils such as coconut, anything lemon, orange, mint etc? Now in to the review, since almost all my hair fell out, whats left is lame 2a waves.

It is high porosity, easily weighed down. This for me is a one and done w exception of leave in conditioner depending on season, humidity level and if I blow out or air dry. I try to wait 3 days in between washes.

I (used to) stay away from scalp bc this will weigh down my easily influenced hair. This would give moisturization, not go dull, frizzy or dry during those days, refresh easily. It adds awesome texture and amazing shine.

The smell is wonderful for those that can use the sweet coconut fragrance I will be happy to be your guinea pig should you decide its worth it to include us people with fragrance and common allergen triggers in your amazing lineup.

This is my favorite conditioner! After applying this conditioner, I leave it on for 60 seconds before rinsing it out. When I apply it, I start at the ends, work my way up, and stop when I to about 1 inch away from my roots.

I love that it has the Super Skinny serum infused in it, and some of it gets left behind when you rinse it out. This is absolutely NOT a complaint. The film is just the iconic Super Skinny serum attached to each strand, just like when you get a chemical blowout, plus it’s a great heat protectant.

It also helps your hair to dry faster but without drying out your hair (if that makes sense). I don’t even need to use leave-in cream after I shower anymore because of this! I cannot explain how soft and moisturized my hair feels when it dries now.

If you have severe bleach damage, I highly recommend this stuff. But again, do not apply this conditioner to your roots unless you have coarse hair. The film that is left behind is water soluble (I checked the ingredients), so it will come out with your next wash and will absolutely NOT cause build up of any kind.

I’ve been using this conditioner for months now and my hair is still growing long and strong.

I had high expectations for this Paul Mitchell mousse based on the good reviews it was given. This product isn’t great but it also wasn’t the worst! It just didn’t deliver. This mousse seemed to weigh my hair down a tad bit.

Leaving my hair a bit dry and not as voluminous as it usually gets when I style with Pantene or Nexxus mousse. Also, My curls were not as defined either as they usually are. I will be returning it back and I will just stick to my to old hair products.

(For reference My hair type is thick wavy/curly. My hair is also bleached, I have Ash blonde colored hair. ).

I love this product. My hairdresser introduced me to it a few years ago and I’ve never looked back. I’m a weekly blow wave girl. And a light spray of this particular product keeps my blow wave / curls looking fresh for up to a week.

The price tag does seem exy, but a little certain goes a long way. Less is definitely best with this product. Just remember to clean the nozzle after each spray. As it’s a dry powder, it can block the nozzle quite easily.

First of all, I LOVE KEVIN MURPHY PRODUCTS, however, I was extremely disappointed in this product. I have very fine hair (hence why I LOVE Kevin Murphy Powder Puff) so I thought I’d give the Doo Over a try.

It sprays out like a fierce hurricane, which only blew my ‘very fine’ hair all over the place but did NOTHING to add volume, or anything really??? At $44 a can, it was very disappointing. PLUS, AFTER ONE USE, THE NOZZLE WAS BLOCKED AND I HAD TO RUN UNDER WARM WATER TO UNBLOCK THE NOZZLE.

Complete waste of money for me. so sorry I can’t be kinder about this product. It does smell lovely. there’s something positive to end on.

This is what I’ve been missing all of these years. My hair is fine and sometimes doesn’t hold style well. This spray is the perfect combination of texture and hold. It’s like a dry shampoo mixed with hair spray.

It does not leave a white residue like I worried it might. The smell is a heavenly sandalwood smell. I tease the crown and spray this onto the tease to lock it in- and also spray throughout the lengths to add some additional body to my finished step.

This product works wonders! It keeps a hold for a long time without looking unnatural. I’ve been using this for a while and will continue to use it. It doesn’t have too powerful of a scent in my opinion.

It also keeps your hair nice and healthy. Overall, I recommend this product to others who are looking for a powerful hairspray.

I was looking for a less expensive alternative for a finishing spray. As for performance, it’s just okay. I think that there are better products out there. My biggest con is the scent. It smells like a really offensive bug spray.

I don’t know if my bottle was out of date. It is nearly sour.

I have used 10 hairspray for at least 2 years. I have fine hair and this hairspray holds my Hair very well. Its a great value because it lasts me a long time. It dries almost immediately after spraying.

I really like the concept of this product, because I love the benefits of hair oils but I hate when they leave my hair looking greasy or flat, so a dry oil sounded perfect. However, this product is good, but not great.

It’s moisturizing, but not enough to tame my frizz. I gave it 4 stars though, because it is moisturizing, and it doesn’t leave my hair greasy or flat.

All and all, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this product. The spray did a good job of controlling some of the oil I would normally get after a day or two of no washing. I would most likely consider picking this up again!.

This is a must have product for anyone who styles their hair. It will give a beautiful non oily shine even on my thin oily hair, and give a medium control of a hair srpay

The new Pantene non aerosol spray is a huge disappointment after using the previous version of the spray for YEARS. This new hairspray sputters when sprayed, has a strong smell, feels different, and does not hold nearly as well as their previous spray.

As a result, we no longer use Pantene spray products, but use either TRESemme #4 UNSCENTED, or Göt2b. in the yellow can. Either spray works well, and the smell is light and not noticeable. Our favorite spray remains the OLD Pantene #5 maximum hold which is unavailable.

Here’s to hoping Pantene will bring back the previous spray, which was a great product, and should never have been changed.

I have purchased and returned three of these pump style bottles. Every one of them has awful spray mechanisms. I feel like I am totally covered in the spray after one push of the sprayer. I have returned two of them hoping to get a better sprayer/nozzle.

I have rewind one sprayer nozzle trying to adjust the opening so it would spray out in a fine mist. This current design sprays huge droplets instead of a fine mist. I absolutely despise these types of sprayers or nozzles for hairspray.

Please bring back the large cans of aerosol spray!!.

I have been using Pantene Strong Hold Hairspray for many years. It has always worked so well on my hair. I noticed they recently changed the “look” of the bottle and ever since this change, it doesn’t feel the same as it always was.

It feels like it does not dry after applying and leaves my hair feeling wet and flat. It looks awful and it is NOT the same anymore. I am so disgusted. This was always such a great product. Please stop changing your best products.

Now I’m going to have to look for another hairspray. Sorry, but you lost a long time customer.
