20 Best Hair Gel For Hold (2023 Updated)

Have used this for years and love it! I like the fact that it holds my hair in place and doesn’t leave a dirty sticky residue like some products do. I apply a little when my hair is wet and after it dries I can either brush through it or just use my fingers.

My hair is very fine so this gives the support needed to hold my hair softly in place. I have even used a small amount of VO 5 hair cream after to give my hair a little shine. I don’t like a plastered stiff look and my hair in short but it always had a tendency to droop on the sides when I would wear it back away from my face but doesn’t since I started using this priduct.

Plus, my hair feels clean after using it. Great product!.

This is a non flaking gel that I use before and after blow drying my hair. It holds my hair without being sticky or hard to the touch. Great for eliminating fly away hair and frizzies. I’ve been using this Studio line hair gel product for about 30 years and nothing can come to comparison to L’Oréal hair gel! I think they are best Hair gel product ever put together! I will always buy your product even since the days of hair foam lines once L’Oréal had that I can remember Price should go back to being normal.

I used to use this brand before the formula changed, but I used to use their ultra defining gel. I was concerned previously because one of the Ingredients in the old formula had formaldehyde as a chemical byproduct, so I never used this.

It seems the brand worked with a dermatologist and now the ingredient was removed. I was willing to give this a shot because of the new formula and I love it. I get way more definition and because of the consistent curl pattern this creates- my hair shrunk about 2-3 inches depending on which curl you look at (my hair goes down to my butt and I have 3A and 2C curls).

Overall I’m so glad I came back to give this brand another chance and this product a first try!.

Yes! Her hair is fly-away frizzy with light curls like mine, and I think she’ll appreciate this as I do. Even when I unthinkingly put a cheap gel on first one day (that I usually layer on when my hair is dried), it came out great with the 2 products piggybacked! And the effect lasts a few days between washings.

I just need to fluff it up with a pic, even teasing parts a bit (I’m THAT old!) then smoothing over and applying hairspray. I did like the previous formulation better; I s’ppose the company got shamed into changing it (due to a TV documentary).

But this is a great product for my fine hair.

I have been an advid Deva Curl user for over 8 years and Love all of their products, and they have really took my hair to a place that I didn’t know it could go as far as health, shine and brilliancy.

However I am very disappointed with the replacement for the Very Popular and highly requested Arch Angel Gel. This gel, is not the same at all. It leaves my low porosity type 4b/c hair frizzy, dry, and FLAKY!Yes Flaky! My experience with the previous gel was the complete opposite.

I’ve tried this new gel 3 different ways, one of which I’ve stuck really close to the recommended instruction, and it does NOT work! Deva Curl, if you have some left over Arch Angel, please send it to me, or consider bringing it back as another Gel option.

As a hairstylist and curly (2c to 3b mixed irish/italian hair girl). I love the co wash. Its lo poo and moisturizing. The condition/mask is good. Could be a little more softening. The oil is a 10!!! Only use it at the end.

and the shine is amazing!!! The shampoo is great for me for every other wash. My hair is ultra clean after using it. I have yet to try the cream/gel!! And the manuka honey I love the smell and I can tell a difference in my hairs cleanliness.

I do like this product – it definitely holds my curls during the day without leaving them feeling ‘crunchy’. I do feel as though I need to use a lot of product to get the desired result though, and will likely switch to a stronger hold gel next time and just scrunch out the gel cast myself, allowing my curls to still look soft and not crunchy.

It definitely is light hold though so if you have fine, curly hair like me that tends to go a bit flat, something stronger might be better.

I purchased this product hoping for great results with my curls. After reading the reviews I decided to give it a try. This product did not work for me. The smell is great, but it left my hair with that crunchy feel.

I tired it 3 different times adjusting the amount I used and nothing helped. Very disappointed that it didn’t work for me.

American crew is a really great product and works exactly as advertised. Its smooth and rich in texture and leaves your hair a little crunchy while firmly holding hair in place. but it’s just to expensive.

I can get the same quality hair care If not less from a local grocery store for 75% less. I would use this product all the time, I just wish it was more affordable. I recommend this product for a high quality salon product that works! 👌.

It’s like most high end hair styling products. It does what it says it should. I use a pea size blob, a bit of water to emulsify and run through my hair prior to going in with a hair-dryer. Great volume for a high pony tail or any up-do.

My son uses it to slick back his hair. Pure gel, no water. There’s the usual tacky residue on your hands, brushes and combs. Wash brushes and combs using a little shampoo and you’re ready for the next day.

This gel smells so good on a man! It works really well too. It’s good to use every day and it doesn’t leave a build up. It’s not cheap, but it’s not too expensive either. I love it when my Husband uses this.

Especially when he’s wearing cologne.

My actual rating is 3. 5 stars but cannot select 1/2 stars. I have coily type 4 hair and would not recommend this product for slick buns or laying edges, it just doesn’t have enough hold. Plus, I prefer mousse for a sleeker look.

I do however I enjoy using this product for wash and go’s. It does a great job at defining my hair while keeping my hair moisturized. I do not reapply the gel everyday, I simply wet my hair with water to reactivate the product.

I also do not do wash and go’s on day one hair as my hair will absorb the product and lose definition. I do my wash and go’s on second day hair i. e. , the day after washing my hair. I pair this gel with the Mixed Chicks leave in conditioner or the Pattern styling cream.

This wonderful product! It great for more hydration, definition, and shine for your hair. It immediately eliminates frizz, it’s soft and light and does not feel greasy. And it creates slight curls and I feel my hairstyle is more durable and hydrated.

I started using this product after my barber threw it into my hair about 7 years and have loved it ever since. This product does not make your hair flake like many other mainstream products such as LA Gel or LA Bella Gel with extreme hold.

Johnny B Gel definitely holds the top contender in performance when it comes to durability, holding style, AMAZING SCENT, and application is super easy with a comb or by hand (preferred using a comb with the Gel on it and damp hair).

This depends on the hair style you are going for. It didn’t leave a “greased” look. But you could definitely tell I had product in it. It does work great with thick hair. It smells amazing. I just like a “natural” look.

It’s a heavy hair gel. So if you are going for a casual style this would be a good one for you.

I’ve been using Joico 4 medium gel for many years. Just received my last order. The ad shows the old tube but I received a new updated tube which contains a different and much stronger fragrance. I’m allergic to scents but I was able to use the old Joico because the fragrance was minimal and smelled more like a herbal.

The new scent is horrible! I cannot use it. I also paid $14. 99 two weeks ago and now it is listed at $13. 05. I guess I should be impressed that it went down instead of up.

I have 2a/3c hair and I absolutely love this gel. I’ve been using it since I started my curly hair journey and I have used some other gels as well to different things but I always come back to this one.

Absolutely amazing hold and definition. I’d be more cautious if you have wavy hair though – it has a LOT of hold and can get quite sticky so I think it serves curly types more. Even for curly hair though it can get too sticky sometimes so I like to put some on my hands and water it down a bit with a few sprays from my styling bottle and remember that less is more otherwise it might get too greasy and crunchy.

Drying with a t shirt / microfibre towel afterward does miracles too :).

I wasn’t sure if this gel would be too heavy for my fine 3A curls, because it has olive oil. I thought it was worth a shot for the price, and a couple of months later I’ve just nearly finished my first tub of it.

I love it! It has good hold, keeps my curls shiny and it controls frizz. I do have to scrunch out the crunch, but I don’t mind that at all, and it leaves my hair soft afterward. I like that the gel has some protein, too, which helps keep my hair balanced between protein and moisture.

I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s everything I’ve always wanted in a gel!.

I thought this purchase was very good value for money. The product gave my hair lots of shine whereas previously it lacked lustre. I wanted it to define, loosen and hold my curls and it is the most effective product that I have used for this (believe me I have tried so many).

It is best applied when the hair is wet e. g. after washing. I was even able to freshen up the curls between washes by just wetting the hair, plaiting and leaving it in the plaits over night. Just wetting the hair seemed to activate the gel that I had initially applied after washing.

You need to gauge how much gel to use by experimenting. Too much will make the hair too crispy and stringy and I don’t recommend using it on dry hair at all.

I’ve been using this product now for a few months. I have type 4b hair so I my hair takes real good to it cause it’s kinda curly. Makes my twists look tight and stretchy and nice looking. Definitely recommend!.

I love Rasta Locks line of products. Although I use Murray’s Iver this I like to mix some of this in when retwisting my man or my sons hair. Thicker jelly like texture and love the mango / lime smell.

Just recently started dreads in one of my sons head and this product does wonders ! No yucky build up ! Great smell ! No sticky fingers when done doing the hair! Very reasonably priced about $6 a jar ! One jar last for about 5 retwist so I would say about $1 of product during each application on the head which is cheap as heck ! Definitely recommend over using bees wax !.

This product is great for my hair! At last a SINGLE product that keeps my curls in check in between wash days! And my curls were tamed, shiny, bouncy, and defined on day one! My 3C/4A low porosity hair LOVES products with honey, so this works well for me.

I do have to start on wash day by applying Camille Rose Honey leave-in first before this product, but after that, this is all I need. So glad not to have to use 3-4 products to refresh every day! I love the way this smells but it is not overwhelming and does not linger.

I also love that it leaves my hair feeling moisturized all day but not sticky. So happy I tried this!.

I rarely feel the need to write a review on any product but this one is a must have!! I got this at my local beauty supply store. I have 4a hair and I pretty much never do a wash and go style. I usually do a braid out or put my hair in a bun but I’ve really been wanting to be able to just apply products in my hair, air dry it and for it to have definition.

Usually when I try a wash and go, my hair gets super frizzy, there isn’t much definition and it only looks decent for one day. I used this product and the Brazilian curl cream together and air dried my hair and girlllll I was so pleased with the results.

There was great definition, barely any frizzyness (I have pretty dry hair), not as much shrinkage as I usually have and it lasts! I’m on day 3 and my curls are still defined AND I didn’t even wrap my hair or use a satin pillow case like I usually do.

It looks better than when I do a braid out too. Overall, im very impressed. I would definitely recommend using this product together with the curl cream and some hair oil for great results :).

When I first purchased this I wasn’t crazy about it. It seemed to be really thick and make my hair feel stiff. It took a little bit to make it work for me, but now it’s my favorite gel. It works best over a leave-in and/or curl cream, and it really works wonders on dry hair.

I can use it when my hair is about 70-80% dry, and add more when my hair is dry or in the morning if I do my hair the night before. It has good hold but is not stiff at all if used properly. The aloe in it is super moisturizing, but can soak in too quickly to wet hair, which can give it that stiff feeling.

This smells kind of like a cola to me, lol, which I actually like. This is kind of pricey, but it does seem to last quite a while. The bottle isn’t huge, but it’s not small either. It’s definitely worth a try.

I absolutely love this product. I’ve been looking for a good medium hold gel for many years and recently got this at a salon after a big hair cut. It is crunchy when it dries, but if i fluff it up it keeps it’s hold but makes it nice and soft.

I have unruly, curly hair. I have tried SO many products over the years, and they either dry my hair out, weigh it down, or make my roots excessively oily. I tried Pantene’s Flexible Wave Gel several years ago, and instantly fell in love.

It tames this beast of a mane without making it feel crunchy and stiff. This is the only gel I have used for the last several years, but now it is extremely difficult to find. Please do not discontinue this product!.

I’ve been buying this for about 12 years now. The bottle has changed a bunch but thankfully they’ve never discontinued it because I don’t know what I’ll use if they do. It can leave your hair a tad crispy if you put it on while it’s too wet and air dry but I don’t care because this is the only curling spray I’ve found that actually creates and holds curl in my straight-wavy hair.

The shorter it is, the better the curls are but I’ve used it from jaw length hair to Butt length hair and always get results. I am a huge fan of air drying and don’t own a diffuser so can’t comment on that but I bet it works wonders that way too.

After reading other reviews I bought this fabulous gel. The Pantene Pro-V Curling Gel does exactly what it says it does. I have very fine and curly hair. This gel gives my fine hair great volume and brings my waves and curls to life! I’m always very skeptical about products but this Pantene product does not disappoint! I definitely recommend this hair care product.

To be honest Im 39 years old; and I have tried so many types and brand of gels in my life. Hands down your Hair Gel is the best ever. I’m not changing or will change to any other brand. Amazing product.

It has vitamins in it as well it does not have no dye and its good for your hair and works well with my hair I have recommended it to several people Once you style your hair with this product it holds it until you wash it out lasts all day.

Pharmapacks is great when you’re looking for bulk deals. I bought styling gel that’s only sold in retail stores in those travel-size bottles for a $1. 25 or so. I paid $0. 56/unit based on 44 count quantity.

It is a good product but unfortunately it is in limited supply and hard to find. Due to that, the price is higher than I really wanted to pay. Fortunately it lasts a long time. I’ve used it for years and haven’t found anything that holds the body in my hair without goo.

On the spectrum of product junkie to relying on one holy grail product, I fall somewhere smack dab in the middle. I have hip-length, 3b curls and am biracial (half South Asian, half East African). Second of all, this stuff smells incredibly yummy, the level of hold it provides is exceptional, and it moisturizes quite well. I’ve found in the past that gels tend to leave my hair a bit dry, so I was always mixing them with hair creams and oils.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but sometimes you don’t feel like being an alchemist in your bathroom every single morning. I just wanted a product that I could apply to my clean/moisturized hair and leave it at that.

I have 4 type hair, very thick & coarse, so I need very thick and dense gel. This gel seemed thick at first, but once I put it on my hair, there was no hold at all & it felt watery. This gel will probably work on thin curly hair, but I can’t say for sure.

It smells really good, so that’s a plus. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work for me.

I am DONE with Schwarzkopf got2b gels since I’ve discovered this product. It holds great, smells great, and doesn’t leave as much product build up. I mainly use it to slick my hairline back and use Ebin lace sprays to lay my wig down.

I love this as a temporary hold for my wig, doesn’t take my edges out and last for a few days as needed. I wouldn’t recommend for someone who is looking for something to hold longer than that. Goes on clear and dries up clear without the flaking! So perfect.
