20 Best Grass Seeds For Lawn (2023 Updated)

I have two German shepherds and a pool put in a year ago. There was small patches of grass and weed and nothing would grow. This has made it the thickest and prettiest I’ve ever seen it. Negative: I’m not 100% sure but it may have stopped my redbud from blooming.

Fertilizer has nitrogen and too much will hurt your tree. The more you have, the prettier your grass will be.

I purchased these seeds 3 weeks ago and waited a week before I put them down. I used a power seeder to put down 3- 40lbs bags. I watered twice a day 45min. in the morning and 30 min. in the evening for 10 days and I noticed the lawn was filling in good.

I cut it high and it looked good I do have some spots that I will fill in. But I am pleased with the results so far. I live in a sandy area and they are growing well. I did use the weak and feed and Granular Line 28 days before I put the seeds down that may have helped.

Now I will keep watering and cut high for the rest of the summer.

As it says, guaranteed results. This seeds started growing in less than a week and by the second week the lawn was already almost completely filled and tall deep green grass was about ready for it first trim.

Amazingly fast and thick grass in three weeks, at temperatures of over 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Thanks Scotts, our yard is looking great in no time!.

Best grass seed I’ve ever tried. Excellent results in sunny areas; and pretty good results in dense shade. Fast germination. Very drought and heat tolerant. Contains Texas Bluegrass which self-repairs bare spots.

The ACE Hardware description is “Jonathan Green Black Beauty Dense Shade Mixed Sun/Partial Shade Grass Seed 7”. I thought “7” was some kind of version number. Turns out that they left off “pounds” so I bought two tiny bags (14 pounds) for the price of a 25 pound bag.

All the bags look the same size online, so you have to be careful. Jonathon Green even sells a 50 pound bag that I cannot find here.

This product is incredible!!! I will never use any other grass seed again. I removed dead grass and weeds, added fresh soil and sprinkled seed down. Watered as recommenced and within 1 week I had beautiful green grass and I could not be more pleased! It was recommended to me by one of the knowledgeable staff from Aubuchon Hardware, Beverly, MA.

This Fast Grow grass seed germinated quickly last fall but the color was a light green. I thought it would green up in the spring but it hasn’t. The grass blades are thick and more like a weed. As it turns out, the product is comprised mainly of annual grass seed and is only for a temporary lawn.

Who would take hours to prep the lawn, seed it, water it for a temporary solution! Front of package should clearly state temporary.

Excellent grass seed. Took 2 weeks after overseeing my lawn. Lawn has filled in great. On my way to the best lawn in the neighborhood lol. Planted it in late spring and will plant again in early fall when I over seed again.

I was so happy when the grass finally started sprouting after two weeks. “Fast Grow” doesn’t mean “Fast Germinate”, so I was a bit disappointed having to wait for the germination so long. Once it did sprout though, it took off and the color is the most beautiful bright green color of grass I’ve ever seen.

Unfortunately I didn’t do my research for this product. If you look at reviews elsewhere, you’ll see many people report the grass dying within a few months. It’s been over a month – almost two months – for me and the grass is starting to die.

This is in the Pacific Northwest where it’s been a wetter than average June with mild temperatures so there’s no reason why it should start dying off now and it’s starting to die in the middle of a very wet week.

Very odd. The soil is a fresh sandy loam type soil which is perfect for grass and as evidenced by the prolific growth early on. It’s really unfortunate because the grass is so strikingly beautiful. Now all my hard work and money is gone :(.

I bought rebel in 1984 for my 2 acre lawn. Excellent results. I still have the greenest and best lawn in my development after 36 years. This variety has been extremely disease resistant for me. My front is Rebel 1 with my back being a dwarf variety.

I don’t Mind cutting front twice as much as back. Maintains good color with only two fertilizations a year in Ohio.

This grass seed worked great! I used a tiller on the yard to prep. Got up all the old grass and weeds, then added a layer of topsoil. Added fertilizer and a bag of the tall fescue seeds. Then did a layer of straw to protect the seeds.

Came up great and looks great!!! Five stars. This was in a area without full sun. Lots of very tall trees along the side of the yard.

I purchased two bags of these grass seeds and followed instructions to the letter, who would not consider the cost (overpriced and over-rated). Sent pictures to show the results which were awful. I requested a guaranteed refund.

The seller refused to issue a refund (asked that I return the product, knowing that I planted the grass seed. Who does that? Perhaps the grass seed was outdated. One thing is certain, the seed did not perform as stated.

Poor Customer Care.

The seed began to sprout after a week. The grass has a fine, soft blade that is a deep green. It’s a little clumpy, but probably that is due to imperfect watering. I still like the look. WOULD HAVE LOVED TO KNOW that I could improve growth and stop the weed growth with Scott’s new seed fertilizer and weed stopper.

I have spent countless hours pulling what has to be many thousands of weeds, and wondering why most of the grass was not growing very well. I learned about the fertilizer and then the grass came in quickly, thickly and it is quite lush.

I still have massive weeds. Ugh. I mowed it and after a few weeks, I’ll put a weed killer down, but I’m hoping it won’t kill this type of grass, too. This is all on me, though. The seed is great.

At first I was really skeptical about this grass. I filled a glass with water ,none of the seeds sank. I thought it would not grow. I did overseeding of the front lawn. What a pleasant surprise! It took only a week for the new grass to start growing.

It is noticebly shorter!.

This grass is appearing to be what it is claimed to be. Low grow-no mow. It is nice and green, has fine blades, and is covering the area nicely. I bought two 10 pound bags and have about half of a bag left for fill in as needed.

We have the irrigation sprinklers set to go off three times daily to get it established.

I put 2 bags of this down a couple of weeks ago, and sure enough, I have a bright green lawn. My next door neighbor was asking what I put down. My wife calls it the ‘grinch’ grass, because it’s so green lol.

I didn’t give it 5 starts because there are a few places where it didn’t seem to take, so perhaps I just missed those places with my spreader – I dunno, but overall I’m really pleased with the results.

Easy to spread and goes a long way! Germinated within 4 days if you follow the steps! Very impressed and will purchase again

I have used this seed a few times in the past few years. It comes up quickly, holds up well and I have planted it in both hot and cold times.

It is 92% annual ryegrass. I wish the description would have said what types of grass it contained. It’s 92% annual ryegrass and 5. 5% solstice intermediate ryegrass. The only thing I could find on Solstice intermediate ryegrass is that it is a hybrid of annual and perennial ryegrass.

But, this grass only contains 5. 5% of that. My experience is that the grass germinated pretty quickly but soon dried up and died. Even areas that had been growing for a few months dried up as soon as the weather got hot.

I would not recommend this seed. It might be okay in cooler climates. Even areas that have shade in the afternoon died. Keep in mind most of the seed is annual rye, which will only last one growing season.

This seed worked great for all of the new landscaping that I did and also on some area’s that I haven’t had grass growing in years! Some hard surface dirt so I wet the area’s down really well and seeded it, have really nice grass growing in those areas after about 2 weeks! The newer dirt was within a week!.

Was beyond expectation. Used in very dense shade and the germination was great. Fast growing. Highly recommended.

The grass appears with 8-14, not 4 days even in optimum conditions but the grass is really lush, very green, quite fine yet tough. Now I will not sow anything else. Fabulous results. Even a late sowing on one large patch last November (didn’t expect success) has produced superb results and this large patch was fantastic by March.

I have several lawns in my garden that cover a very large area and, bit by bit, I am re-sowing great swathes with excellent results. Exceeds expectations.

I sprinkled it on all the bare patches mainly left by using evergreen 80 to rid the moss and weeds (mainly daisies). Apart from the birds enjoying it the remainder still lies on the bare patches after 3 weeks.

Tried grass seed previously without much success. With this seed you do genuinely get growth within a week, within 3 weeks looks fantastic. Highly recommended.

I have come back two years in a row to purchase this brand of grass seed. It germinates quick and once it starts to grow looks great and blends in really well with existing grass. I rough up my bear spot then apply the seed then top it with scotts top soil.

After failing on few attempts with popular brand of lawn seeds, started looking for alternates. This one had an excellent review and price was reasonable. Hence gave it a shot. Prepared the soil bed, spread the seeds and then spread a thin coat (about 1 inch) of soil and water it.

If the weather is right I got results as early as 3days. That’s awesome for me. Would definitely recommend this. Try it out.

I’m not an expert when it comes to seeding my lawn. I definitely have a lot of dead, patchy areas that don’t receive enough sunlight. I also wanted to avoid seeding products that would be prime targets for weeds and other infestations.

This Greenview formula grass product definitely revitalized the key areas of my lawn and I wanted to take note that I followed the instructions on the back of the product packaging. Hopefully, in the time duration listed on the packaging, my lawn will be more uniform, green, and healthier than ever before.

If this review sounds like it’s too good to be true, one couldn’t be further from the truth. Just follow the simple instructions, seed the areas that need be, and watch a healthier lawn appear. I think it’s important to understand that seeding products are best used to support your growing lawn and not be the sole substitute.

I think it’s definitely going to improve the existing aspects of your problematic lawn turf areas, but just remember that this product can definitely aid in your lawn survival. This product does what it’s supposed to do and I wholeheartedly will give this product my thumbs up approval!.

I planted the seed according to the directions on the package. I did not put down fertilizer with the seed since the directions discouraged this as perhaps negatively impacting the germination. I watered it diligently to keep the seed bed moist and I was very careful to make sure that the seed had adequate contact with the soil as I always do.

This is the worst outcome I have ever had with grass seed. I’ve always had germination in the past with other seeds. so disappointed, a big waste of money and effort!.

I bought this product to rejuvenate half my rear lawn, the other half needed complete reseeding as did my front lawn. I originally bought two 1. 6kg that stated 40m2 coverage. The rear lawn area that needed reseeding was approx 28m2.

I used a whole box and a bit. The coverage look good and even and I was impressed when it started to germinate within 4 days. The front garden area was approx 35m2. I used the remainder of the second box for this.

After a week all areas seem to have some growth but some a lot more than other but I could see plenty of “seed” in the areas that were more bare, so thought they just needed more time to germinate. I bought a 3rd pack a week after the first sowing which I used on the area that had grass but needed a top up.

Total 3 boxes should have enough to cover 120m2 for a actual area of approx 70m2 should have given lush thick even growth but what seemed at first to be seed was in fact husk! This was noticed when seeding the last box as it was a little breezy when sowing.

To sum up – What was seed germinated quickly and has grown well but much of the box was husk and gave a false coverage reading and now I have large bare patches and patches of minimum growth along side nice thick coverage.

If you are going to use, allow for twice the coverage you need to ensure a got coverage. In my opinion this is expensive and you could probably get better cheaper.

27 September 2021. Thoroughly watered and aerated the lawn; then raked it and spread a layer of Wickes multi-uirpose topsoil over it before attempting to scatter this grass seed evenly over it using the ‘built-in side applicator’ which is a series of holes and a flap on the side of the box.

Trouble is, the instructions tell you to use 30g per sq metre for revitalising your lawn or 40g per sq metre for new lawn or patch repairs – but how are you supposed to weigh out the correct amount if you are going to utilise the ‘built-in side applicator’? 18 October 2021.

Most of the seed has grown. The instructions say ‘First cut at 5-8cm (2-3″)’. Gradually lower the cutting height to about 2. 5cm (1 inch). Do not remove more than 1/3 of the grass leaf at any one time.

I’m not sure whether this means that the first time you cut should be when the new grass has grown to 5-8cm long or whether the first time you cut it should leave the new grass 5-8cm long? The new grass does seem to be about 3″ long now – but the ground still feels too wet to mow it :-/ In fact, I am still resisting even walking on the new grass!.

Bought to lay new lawn, covered by weedblock for at least 1yrs. About 25sqm. Turned soil over but didn’t add a new layer of compost. Grew well in tufts where old flower beds were, also late in season might not have helped and stopped growth for now.

Might grow in better over the year. Sprinkled an even layer over whole area. Instructions said to lay a thick line and then rake from one side down but I felt like it wouldn’t cover properly that way.

I also felt I could have used 2 of these. Birds seemed to show little interest in the seed as described.

Farbe mega grn, erst recht nach Dngung. War die einzige im Haus, die im Sommer noch grnen Rasen hatte nach der Hitzeperiode. Super Qualitt, werde ich immer wieder gebrauchen, wenn nicht mehr im Baumarkt bei uns erhltlich, dann halt bers Netz.

Lsst sich super mit dem Rasenmher bearbeiten und fhlt sich super an. Muss leider meinen Garten im Haus tauschen, also werde ich abermals den Rasen ausshen.

TranslateShow in original languageDies ist bereits meine 2. Gropackung des Wolf Rasens, eben weil ich mit dem Versuch (1. Packung) doch recht zufrieden war. Der Rasen keimt schnell (im Sommer ist bereits nach 1 Woche das erste Grn zu sehen), hat eine feine Blattstruktur und ein schnes Grn.

Nach der Aussaat ist drauf zu achten den Boden stndig feucht zu halten (d. h. im Sommer mehrmals tglich zu wsssern. ). Ebenso ist es wichtig da der Boden ein paar Nhrstoffe aufweist (Humus beimischen).

Auf alten nhstoffarmen Bden ist die Keimung schlecht. Wenn das Grn mal steht ist der Rasen strapazierfhig und pflegeleicht. Bei mir sieht der Rasen auf der Nordseite besser aus als auf der Sdseite, kommt aber dennoch mit Sonne gut klar.

Alles in Allem ein guter Rasen der leider auch ziemlich hochpreisig ist.

So I haven’t fully played with this seed yet. I did a test patch back in early fall and it looked very promising, then the snow came and, well, I have to wait for spring before I can do anything else.

But the results I did get, were great! My yard is, honestly, more dirt then anything else. Between multiple droughts, heavy wind, the large incline I live on, and poor maintenance from the previous homeowners, I fear the worst.

Ideally, I would go for sod but I’m not a huge fan of the manufactured lawn look. This seed mix is exactly what I’m looking for! While it might take some trial and error for me to get the seed to sprout, I am excited to see the final product come Spring!.

I’m in love with this mix! I live near Denver, and our summers are hot, dry, and baking. The sun is also so direct and intense at this altitude. I’ve been looking for a lawn alternative because a traditional green grass lawn just doesn’t make fiscal or environmental sense here.

This is about 8 weeks in. I’ve been watering to keep it moist this far, but I’ve been watering less and less and now it’s June and it doesn’t wilt or seem phased by the heat at all! It’s so lush and plush, and filling in great! I planted it in all the bald spots, and now you can’t even tell they were bare.

The flowers are coming up and it feels great under your feet. When I plant the lawn in our newly built home this fall, I’m definitely putting some of this in!.

So, it’s been two months since I planted these seeds and at first I thought only the grass sprouted. However, finally I am seeing some flowers and clover. It is indeed slow growing in Georgia which is what I wanted.

Despite some user error (probably could have raked in some better soil, layer hay over the whole space, sowing before a torrential rainstorm that washed away most of my work), a lot of the seed grew anyway.

I’d recommend it to people in Georgia, especially a more shady spot and a lot of patience. I planted early March and it is now May. It’s still green, slow growing, and pretty.

This is the most successful seeding that I’ve ever had. Was excited to see all new growth in my patchy lawn. Looking forward to seeing this grass full strength, lush and beautiful.

Sowed the seed as per instructions over a Wickes own topsoil. We needed 30 bags of topsoil and 2 boxes of seeds for 20m2 lawn and it is growing well. *Water well- really well- if it’s a dry spell of weather.

Morning and evenings worked well for ours. Seeded in April. Overall, really happy with the products and how the lawn is now establishing. Also a bonus- the birds didn’t bother too much with the seed so didn’t have to rig up anything to keep them away.

Once growing and established this is a nice lawn. However it took a lot longer to sprout than I expected. Sown in top soil, watered in initially, but then we had a real mixed bag of sunny and rainy days (mid to late April).

I would say perfect weather for grass growing. But it was almost 3 weeks before I saw any sign of growth. It had to be over sown as the pigeons gorged themselves on it. 3 stars is for the eventual quality of grass that has grown.
