20 Best Grass For Southern California And Dogs (2023 Updated)

As a horse person, I already have experience with different hay blends. This Alfalfa is very sweet smelling, clean, and fresh. The best quality Alfalfa I’ve found in small animal Alfalfa options. I can hardly drop it in their cage before they start eating it.

Alfalfa is a leafier hay, and is actually a legume, not a traditional “grass” hay like Timothy, Meadow, and Oat Hay. Due to this, the type of hay is pretty different, in that it’s not just comprised of stems, but rather is made up of rigid stems with soft leaves.

This means that typically the ratio of stems to leaves in each bag may differ from bag to bag. The smaller the bag, the less likely you are to have an even balance of stems and leaves. I see many people complaining about this, so I wanted to provide some insight on why this happens.

I offer some Timothy Meadow Hay (also from Oxbow!!) alongside my Alfalfa hay for variety and extra fiber and they seem to like it! The Alfalfa I’ve purchased from Oxbow has not been dusty at all. It’s VERY clean and fresh and smells amazing.

I’ve been buying this hay for my pigs for years and they love it. But for the past few months, the majority of boxes I get are horrible quality (I buy a box every month). The hay is dusty, most is brown, it’s just all crumbly.

I currently have a box of orchard grass hay that I received a few days ago and its mosty brown and my pigs wont eat it. So I went out to the pet store and got a bag of oxbow timothy hay because they didnt have orchard grass.

ALL of the bags on the shelf were so dusty but I bought one anyway because I needed something for my pigs. So maybe its just the oxbow company as a whole? Idk. My pigs wont eat the timothy hay either because its also mostly brown.

So I’m sitting here wondering if I should try a different brand, or gamble and buy another box of orchard grass because MAYBE this time it will be good. Either way, I’ve wasted over $30 in the last week ALONE on oxbow hay.

Hope they do something about this.

For those of us who have allergies to Timothy Hay, Alfalfa and the like, this Orchard Grass in the large box is the way to go. I use it in a constant forage/litter box combination with a layer of absorbent litter box fill underneath.

My bunnies took to it right away and seem to like the no-dried-leaf-dust feature of Orchard Grass. Because the Orchard Grass has slightly less nutrition when compared to Timothy Hay, I now feed Vitamin Yogurt Drop treats daily.

OXBOW hays and grasses are the best and cleanest I have ever used. Even their Timothy Hay had the least amount of dried-leaf-dust of any product I’ve used. The Orchard Grass is very clean and seems to be excellent nest material.

At least that’s what our doe seems to think! (<-:) Delivery was free, very quick, and right to our door.

Very easy to plant the seeds and it grew so fast I felt like I could see it growing in front of my eyes. When I first gave it to our girl Charly she was not interested at all. I thought she would love it as she’s a rescue that lived outdoors for who knows how long.

I put it by her food. nope, I put it by the sliding glass door that she sits in front of all day. nope, then back by her food. Finally after a few days she took a bite and she is hooked. Chomps on it throughout the day.

This is an AWESOME product. I applied this to a LONG strip of area in my lawn which I had removed the turf and reseeded. In the past, whenever I had reseeded a section of my lawn to put in new grass, weeds cropped up in the newly seeded lawns within 2 weeks along with the new grass.

When I applied this product back in Sept along with the new seeds, i have seen ZERO weeds. ZERO. All I see is nice thick grass with NOT ONE weed coming thru. That has NEVER occurred in the 15 yrs of using lawn care products.

I had purchased Tenacity separately back in June/July via Amazon because i had found out about this amazing, SAFE, weed preventer/killer. Tenacity’s main chemical is Mesotrione. So this was the PERFECT thing i was looking for.

I will use this product ALWAYS going forward cause it combines the ability to seed and also prevent weeds for a LONG TIME.

It is a great product. The first product that I applied that doesn’t end up with green streaks on the lawn. I think it is because the granular pellets are very similar in size. They are also smaller in size so it is easier to spread with my broadcast spreader.

I had issues with other fertilizers where the bigger pellets would get stuck if I don’t use a higher setting than I would like.

Recommended by my father (who is a certified master gardener) for rehabbing a seriously sad lawn following dethatch and aeration. Holy moly!!! Absolutely fantastic results with overseeding cool season grass even though it was SUMMER.

Fresh Patch stands behind their product. Swift, responsive and abnormally respectful staff formulated along with an absolutely outstanding product calls for much more money than is being asked. Our seventeen year old dachshund Mango began having bathroom accidents.

Not wanting to restrict him with diapers we began looking for alternatives and we have found Fresh Patch. Although Mango does not seem to adjust to the grass after over a week of attempts, I believe it to be an excellent quality product.

It is still very much alive and thriving nearly two weeks later. I love the way it feels and looks and since Mango isn’t using it, I have been enjoying its use as a bed mat. Nothing more satisfying than getting out onto green grass every morning! Wife thinks I am quite indeed weird but I refuse to throw it out until it dies.

Bottom line, I explained briefly what my problem was after the company followed up on my satisfaction with their product and within thirty minutes they refunded me for the grass. It wasn’t even their fault! Mango was the one who didn’t want to use it! What a pleasurable experience this was! Our 8 week old puppy took to this immediately. We live in a condo so we needed a solution to let our puppy ***** safely before she’s fully vaccinated. There’s no “Safe space” outside where we can take her that other dogs wouldn’t have gone already.

I had no idea if it would be hard initially to get her used to it, but we plopped her down on it as soon as we brought her home and she went *** right away. We had to re-direct her a couple of times during the **** sniff, but after a few times she knew this was her ***** spot.

Doesn’t mean she was ***** trained that quickly 🙂 but she knew when we put her there that it was her spot to go. 3 weeks later, this is the best thing we could have done. Having to take a puppy out every 15-20 minutes living in a condo would have been a nightmare.

We keep it on our patio which is fairly large, and I never smell anything. I’ve ordered a 2nd one to keep in my car so when I take her places (carrying her only ), I can stick her down on the “safe grass” so she doesn’t have to hold it the entire time.

I will probably keep one on our patio well beyond when I can take her outside also, for early morning and late night *****’s, until she’s old enough not to go so frequently. We had some issues with delivery – FedEx’s fault not fresh patch, but their customer service is excellent and helping me resolve it every time (fedex is awful!).

This absolutely works. I have two female dogs and my yard was a ravaged by burn spots. After a month of using one container, there were no additional spots. We dug all the burn spots up and repaired them and there have been no new ones.

Unfortunately I have to feed my dogs six a day, three each based on their weight. And this stuff is not cheap. I will say that you get a free bottle with a review (only 1 review per family). But I’m on my fourth bottle, so that is not motivating this review.

my first one I actually bought off of Amazon. I found out that Walmart is selling it cheaper by like $4, so I thought I would make a review here to let everyone know.

The product is full I thought I needed 2 but I only needed 1. Really recommend as I used it with some silk tulips. Went really well. Love the product. Looks like real tall grass Worth the price.

I needed some greenery to put in a piece of pottery. This was perfect. It looks real and the more muted green coloring was a little different from the fake greenery you usually see. Was a bit more expensive than I would like, so I only gave it four stars.

They look real. I put them in flamingo stands that were candles. I surrounded them with small shells an sea glass. They look amazing

The dune grass was exactly what was described and looks wonderful in the designated area that I needed to add a special touch. This isn’t the first time I’ve ordered from Afloral. I ordered silk poppies a few years ago and they are still beautiful.

I purchased four bunches and put a bunched up sheet underneath to prop up so they would be higher from the base of the vase. they stay nice and upright – would buy again

I put some seeds in a plant pot with mud from our front garden. I stuck the pot in our kitchen window, which faces north. The grass started growing after around 4 days and in less than a week it looks fully grown.

We are in the middle of snow spell, so I didn’t think it would grow so quickly! My indoor cat has started eating the grass already.

I was happy to find out the seeds are active and the grass grows super quick. Cats are uninterested in it but they could just be fussy and not inclined to eat it. I was disappointed that it did not come with the tray that it stated it would come with considering I bought 2 of these so had to use my oven dish which isn’t great to be honest.

Bought this grass seed a week or so ago and couldn’t believe how quickly it has grown.Just keep it watered and up it comes. Lovely soft green grass. Our cats are loving it. Really good buy.

Buying synthetic grass online isnt easy. I like to feel the grass and look at the blades to see if its really realistic. Because of COVID, I just had to take a chance with this product. PRO: its very thick and sturdy.

I didnt have to lay anything down before laying this grass down. I didnt use grass staples either. Its stayed in place well for over 2 months. We get tornadoes a lot so this is great. There are so many types of real grass so its hard to say which type this is supposed to resemble.

I just wanted soft grass/rug for my kids playground. This works wonderfully and its budget friendly considering the fact that extra materials were not needed.

I actually bought this product about awhile back just to have at my sisters house for my small dogs. This worked amazing for my dogs and I could not find this for the longest to order for my house now.

I ended up buying a different brand and my dogs refuse to use it so now that I have found this one I will be ordering it again in a bigger size. For those wondering it has been 3 years since I bought this originally and my sister still has it, and it still has it’s fluffiness and has not faded.

My dogs still use it when I go to her house.

I got this strictly for my HD power sled push and pull sessions. It will do the job but I did notice immediately rolling it out that the cutting of this thing was either sloppy or its already unraveling on the outsides.

Long strings or whatever mesh is under it is what is sticky out. Honestly they look like the grass you put in an Easter basket. I don’t think I would recommend this size blade for anything aesthetic.

Kids play area, working out, dogs potty pad. its perfect and inexpensive compared to the other 33 ft x 3 ft artificial turf. I love the one I returned , but it was only 13 ft long. The blade was 1 1/4 in and thick , lush looking, heavier.

Very expensive for a 33 ft piece though. I opted for cheap. This blade is like 1/8 or 1/4 of an inch.

The ordering and delivery process was good. Unfortunately the plants are ridiculously overpriced for what I received. I understand they are trimmed back for shipping, but these #1Feather Reed grasses were the size of small weeds and cost $25 each.

I recommend The Greenhouse supply pictures of actual plants so the consumer can make a educated decision to overpay and not be disappointed. Purchase with caution.

I love this plant! When there is a soft breeze the grass moves with it. Beautiful movement. Show stopper! Please these plants are so well packed. I have not lost one!

I’ll be honest, I messed this up a bit. Lesson learned here so maybe the person who buys this product can learn from me too. I watched the weather forecast and waited for a few consecutive days of rain to pop up before laying this seed down.

Figured I’d cash in on Mother Nature as I know grass seed takes some regular watering to get going. An ideal forecast with 3 days of rain (I live in Texas so that’s rare) finally came and I went outside and laid this seed in my side yard to help fill in and thicken the grass there as it’s a relatively shady area.

Unfortunately, day 1 of the rain ended up being a pretty violent thunderstorm with buckets of water and flash flooding. And sadly it looked like a lot of the seed I laid was washed away. HOWEVER, I did noticed about a week after the storms some of the seed survived and new grass sprouts are popping up in the yard.

Pretty incredible. I’ve literally put the minimum effort into this and gotten results. So, if you’re serious about growing grass in your yard I really believe this product will work great if you do it right.

Lay the seed, maybe till your soil, water with a sprinkler fairly regularly, and you’ll have grass in no time. Despite my disaster, this seed grows fast and the product really seems to work. I’ll likely go pick up another bag and try again and take more care purely based on the “success” from my failed attempt.
