The grasses that are best for sandy soil in North Carolina are those that are native to the area. These grasses have deep roots that help to hold the soil in place and prevent it from being blown away by the wind.
The most common native grasses in North Carolina are Bermuda grass, bluegrass, fescue, and rye grass.
Cover crops are found to improve soils in several ways- by protecting existing soil, contributing organic material and nutrients, and keeping the soil alive year-round to ensure healthy composition. All of these elements are considered in compiling this carefully chosen blend.
There are four legumes to set nitrogen in the soil, three hardy grains for rapid cover and bio-mass, a deep-rooted radish to help break up and aerate the soil, a mustard with natural insecticidal properties, and a great collard for forage and additional biomass.
This cover crop is great for either fall or spring. Planting rate is about 65 lbs per acre or one pound will cover about 600 square feet. Recommended to till the plants in before they bear seeds. Hairy Vetch 10%, Winter Peas 20%, Fixation Balansa clover 4%, Crimson Clover 5%, Winter Triticale 16%, Winter Wheat 15%, Winter Rye grain 15%, Driller Dicon Radish 5%, Yellow Mustard 2%, Forage Collards 8%.
I’m very, very pleased with this ground cover mix. I live in an arid climate with heavy clay soil. I’m trying to repair the soil on my property in order to improve water retention and nutrient density so that I can eventually grow fruits and vegetables in the ground instead of raised beds.
I’ve tried a handful of ground covers this summer, and none of them have been successful except for this one. I tilled the soil down about 8 inches first and amended it with a clay buster mix. The cover crop is flourishing! I will definitely be purchasing more of it in the future.
This product suited our needs greatly. We are not using this cover crop seeds for agricultural/farming purposes, but for aesthetic reasons only. The seeds were sown into our forest (pine, fir and oak trees) in early April.
They germinated within 4-5 days already and even survived a couple of snow/frosty days. Currently they are about 3-4 inches which is perfect for us so far. We are at zone 9 and this cover crop seems to be a good alternative for ground cover in the forest floor.

We, Opal and Puck, love their cat grass! It is very easy to grow and is ready before you know it. Our little Opal was abandoned and taken in as a very young little kitten. She is the sweetest cat you’ll ever have.
Anyway, since her paws have never touched the grass she has found the next best instinctive behavior. She lays in the cat grass and nibbles while she relaxes. So cute. I tried to attach the picture but your technology won’t permit me to share it.
5-Star ratings all the way from this cat crazy family! Bruce M. Canfield We, Opal and Puck, love their cat grass! It is very easy to grow and is ready before you know it. Our little Opal was abandoned and taken in as a very young little kitten.

Sprouted quickly. Follow the instructions and you’re set! The second time i sprouted some for my cat i covered it with some dirt so the roots were deeper so she couldn’t tear it out so easy (and bring a clump in the house to spread dirt everywhere) it still sprouted, it just took a little longer to come in fully.
If you want quick grass, just cover with a piece of cardboard and make sure there isn’t any light seeping in from the edges. However, my roots were not very robust that method. I soaked my seed for for 4-6 hours.
Not only am I very happy with the quality of these seeds, the cats are also. The order arrived within a few days and I set to soaking the seeds and prepping the containers immediately. A week later, the cats are in heaven.
It’s a hearty variety with thick blades. I put them ins 12 x12 inch container and they obviously look delicious to the cats. I’ll be back for more.

I actually got this for my dog to munch on when he has stomach discomfort. It arrived quickly, it grew quickly and it is beautiful. He has sniffed at it with interest, but at this time he is not experiencing any stomach issues so he hasn’t taken any bites yet.
Kids would love this because it grows so quickly. I worked with kids and they get so excited when we plant things and they can see results.
Received shipment promptly and the instructions were easy to follow. Growing was quick and lush. Adopted a 3 yo chocolate Lab 6 months ago, loves to eat grass so trying to find something with more benefits (no chemicals on the grass) other than yard.
She likes it but is still getting used to being able to “eat” her “yard”. Will keep growing and using.
Milky Spore Powder is a One Time application using only one teaspoonful every 4 feet in a checker board pattern on your lawn, or use the Lawn and Garden Dispenser. Our products make it easy for you and your pets to live a greener and healthier lifestyle.
For us thinking ‘Green’ and making a difference is a way of life. The Milky Spore is not harmful to people, animals, beneficial insects or the environment; safe to use around water ways. Grubs do damage to your lawn and attract digging vagrants such as moles and voles.
Milky Spore is a naturally occurring host specific bacterium that puts a protective blanket on your lawn.
Purchased a small carton last year (didn’t look at amount closely for size of lawn) and this year had a very substantially less year number of them. To provide other information, I also used nematodes last year but the weather was so dry unsure how useful (nematodes apparently need moist soil), and nematodes don’t survive the cold winter.
Regardless, this year had WAY less of the japanese beetles so decided to spread a larger amount of the milky spore and then should be done for a while (milky spore survives cold and live in Maine). It worked for me last year, and found out about it because worked really well for a friend who had a japanese beetle problem prior to using milky spore.
Yes, I would recommend. Be aware it says not to use a spreader (such as might use for lime or fertilizer), but instead a spoon or specially made spore spreader.
Milky spore is the most natural way to rid your lawn of grubs from Japanese Beetle larva. I’ve been using this disease for over 30 years. One application every 10 years for a nice lawn is well with it.
I bought this for my cousin’s new lawn and we both applied it. Very easy application took us less than 30 minutes. Good stuff if you follow specific instructions.
GreenView Starter Fertilizer is ideal for establishing new lawn areas. It sets the stage for exceptional performance with essential nutrients the new grass seedlings need to thrive – providing nitrogen that is both readily available and controlled release to improve growth and vitality.
Starter fertilizers have a high concentration of phosphorus as their main ingredient, and unlike established lawns – grass seeds and seedlings use the phosphorus to increase the changes of germination success.
You can count on GreenView Starter Fertilizer to provide consistent, even turf growth. 48 lb. covers 15,000 sq. ft.
Give your lawn what it needs for one of the most essential times to fertilize, fall. GreenView’s Fall Lawn Food formulation is a zero-phosphate, enhanced efficiency fertilizer with 20% slow-release nitrogen that promotes quick spring green-up.
It will also help make your lawn hardier and ready to withstand the stresses of winter. With improved nutrient absorption, your lawn will be better able to access water to protect against future heat and drought in the seasons to come.
The Cat Ladies Organic Pet Grass Seed, 8-oz bag; When the grass in your planter is gobbled up or wilted, re-plant those wholesome greens with Organic Pet Grass Seed from The Cat Ladies. Within 4-5 days, you can have fresh, hearty greens—all you need is healthy soil and a planter! Like humans, pets of all species instinctively crave healthy doses of the vitamins and minerals found in vegetables.
That’s why you might spot your pet chewing grass in your lawn—or even munching on your house plants. Trouble is, those are often treated with chemicals and can be toxic to animals. With a proprietary blend of wheat, oats, rye, barley and flax, this bed of greens will be safe for your pal to snack on.
And don’t let these ladies fool you! They don’t package these seeds exclusively for their feline friends. Dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs and reptiles can enjoy munching on the fruit—or the grass—of your labor! It’s a healthy treat made by pet lovers, for pet lovers.
We’ve tried growing other brands of cat grass. The grass itself was kind of thin and wimpy, and my cats just sniffed it and walked away. THIS grass is amazing! Thick, lush, robust, it must be the kitty equivalent of loading up at the Golden Corral salad bar after being relegated to lame iceberg lettuce side salads.
They love it. As for growing, if you don’t have a green thumb (and I don’t), no worries! What you see in the pic is the result of just a couple teaspoons of seeds, in potting soil, after just 5 days’ grow time.
Amazing yield. And I barely put a dent in the bag. I agree with the other reviewer who said now that her cats have this, they leave her other plants alone. Same here. The kitties have stopped murdering my other houseplants and I don’t worry because they’re eating healthy, organic greens.
I received my timely (2 days) order of Cat Ladies organic certified non-GMO pet grass for my two indoor cats both of which roam freely inside the pool screen enclosure but never outside to prevent irreparable harm to the plethora of song birds that visit my feeders daily.
Jazzy & Kona are always eating each other’s fur balls and trying to snack on my patio herb garden so I suspected they needed some roughage for proper digestion. I reused the chewy. com box to plant the grass, first lining it with a trash bag, and I followed directions almost to the tee.
The temps are still very warm here so I did not wrap the box in plastic wrap, but found a great shady spot on the patio and waited after watering and fluffing the soil. Two days later, Beautiful yellow- green grass began to sprout (so I may have been too generous with watering).
However, now on day 4, the grass is almost 4 inches high and a perfect deep green color. My cats love it. They have been chomping on it like goats for the last three mornings. Initially, I was thought they might want to lie on the grass while indulging, thus the reason for the larger area of plantings; however, that has not been the case.
Next time, I’ll just plant a smaller, 3-in pot for easier access and conserve the seeds. I have a tendency to make projects bigger than they need to be. Luckily, there wasn’t a kiddy (kitty) pool lying around.
Love these! The quality is consistent and the grass grows high and very lush green. My cats and fosters go crazy for them. Best at 5-6 days and I recommend using clear plastic bowls to better control soil volume and prevent over watering.
Highly recommended! But I would break the really long stalks in half during feeding because some long strings get caught in their poop and they drag their booty to try to remove it. Also reassuring to know that it’s organic.
The photo shows an old batch and the new one ready to serve!.

Common Name: Dwarf Hair Grass, Eleocharis Parvulus Mini Dwarf Hair Grass is an extremely popular and easy to keep foreground aquarium plant that produces a grass-like lawn when provided with optimal conditions.
Known for being an aquatic grass, Dwarf Hair Grass features thin, bright green blades that spread horizontally by sending out runners. High-lighting and Co2 injection are not mandatory to grow dwarf hair grass but implementing this in a planted tank help to promote and increase the growth rate and density of the aquarium plant.
Dwarf Hair Grass is a versatile aquarium plant that can also grow submerged or emersed in dry-start aquariums and Wabi Kusa setups. When grown in optimal conditions, Dwarf Hair Grass will grow quickly and frequent pruning will be needed to ensure the foreground stays well-trimmed and low.
Dwarf Hair Grass will also willingly travel to all areas of a planted aquarium if given the opportunity! Notes: Tissue culture plants are grown in vitro from a state of the art laboratory specialized in propagating aquatic plants.
They provide the best option for those who want to ensure that absolutely zero unwanted pests are introduced into the aquarium. Remove tissue culture gel before planting. Simply wash the gel away or soak the plant in water and squeeze the gel off with your fingers.
Do not make drastic changes to the aquarium. Unstable parameters will result in melt and rotting of the aquarium plant. CO2 injection will yield better growth. Family Name: Cyperaceae Origin: Cosmopolitan Height: 1-2” pH: 6-7.
5 Care: Easy Light: Medium to High Co2: Recommended Propagation: Cut new growth along with roots Growth rate: Moderate to Fast.
Tokyo Sun is of genus Sedum in the Crassulaceae family, and their beautiful golden color in full light is a great choice for accenting the edges of pots. The original species is said to have rich green leaves, but this species is a yellowing horticultural species, so it will appear to be a reversion.
Tokyo Sun is one of the varieties that remind people of potted grass. The branches and leaves are miniature that are easy to burst. They form a long oval shape. The length is only about 0. 4 inch (1 cm) and the width is 0.
08 – 0. 12 inch (0. 2 – 0. 3 cm). The leaf surface is flat or slightly convex that forms an arc-like convex with a front oblique tip. The whole plant is smooth and not covered with white frost. The plant needs sufficient light so that the leaves can remain golden yellow.
If there is not enough light, then the leaves will be yellowish green. Care Tips Light: Tokyo Sun is particularly demanding of light. Providing good light not only helps its growth, but also affects the vibrancy of its color.
Adequate light needs to be provided, however, it should be noted that strong light in summer must also be avoided. Water: During its growth period, you need to keep the soil in the pot semi-wet to facilitate its growth.
You can also wait until the potting soil is dry before watering thoroughly. However, watering needs to be controlled above 86F (30 ) and below 41F (5 ). Soil: A good choice of suitable soil should be made.
It does not require much soil, and loose, breathable and fertile sandy soil can be used to promote robust growth. Potting: It is recommended to use ceramic pots. Ceramic pots have a certain degree of permeability.
Clay pots lose water too quickly, plastic pots tend to retain water for too long and permeability is poor. Temperature: Prefers warmth and can be between 64. 4-77F (18-25 ). In winter, to keep it safe, try to be able to be above 50F (10 ).
High temperatures are also bad for it, thus, it is best not to go above 86F (30 ). Humidity: Tokyo Sun grows well in average household humidity levels when grown indoors. Does not like too much humidity.
I am happy to take a moment and write a review. My plant arrived in excellent condition, and it is a very nice looking plant. I am impressed by the uniform and bright yellowish-green color throughout.
I bought it as a decoration for a reptile vivarium and it is a nice addition and will also help maintain a higher humidity which is beneficial to the species I am keeping. A last step will be to find some type of larger rectangular shaped container to transplant it into in order to fill up the corner (see photo) that I placed it in.
Arrived in perfect shape, perfectly packaged. Very unique little plants (for Ohio anyway)! Just planted all my lovelies from Succulent Depot all together for now and will find a better spot for her once she gets starts to spread.
The sedum was packaged well and arrived safely. It is very healthy and so cute. The price for the plant and shipping was affordable. Everything I have bought from Succulent Depot is thriving. Thank you.
Graptosedum ‘Alpenglow’ is of the genus Graptosedum in the Crassulaceae family native to Mexico. It is an intergeneric hybrid resulting from the cross between Graptosedum paraguayensis and Sedum stahlii.
The plant shape is very similar to the hazel moon of the genus Pinellia. The petals are waxed and the leaves are arranged in an extended rosette of white powder. The leaves are usually green with vermilion tinged with red brown when there is sufficient sunlight, and the leaves are melon-shaped with pointed ends and small yellow star-shaped flowers.
The waxy leaves with a special color, in full sunlight conditions, appear attractive deep red. In low light, the color will become dull and the stems will elongate. It can absorb formaldehyde and purify the air.
Care Tips Light: It needs plenty of light in spring and fall, otherwise it will cause the plant to have excessive growth of branches, cause it to lose its shape, thin the leaves, dull the color of the leaves, and reduce the white powder on the leaf surface.
Water: Watering master the principle of “not dry, not watering” to avoid potting soil water. The center of the leaf cluster should not be waterlogged, otherwise it will cause rotten, especially to avoid long-term rain.
During hot summer time moderate watering, this time basically you do not need to water, you can spray the plant with appropriate water to cool down. Soil: Is mainly loose and breathable loam, so the soil for potted plants can be mixed with sandy loam and coarse sand, and the right amount of fertilizer can be added to the soil as a nutrient for growth.
Potting: It is recommended to use ceramic pots. Ceramic pots have a certain degree of permeability. Clay pots lose water too quickly, plastic pots tend to retain water for too long and permeability is poor.
Temperature: Once the temperature is higher than 95F (35 ), you will need to use shade, or there is a risk of sunburn, and then slowly cut off water, the entire summer dormant period less water or no water, by Mid-September when the temperature comes down and you will start to resume watering.
Winter, if the temperature can be maintained above 32F(0 ) , is able to give water. If it’s below 32F (0 ) then you need to cut off water, otherwise it is easy to frostbite rotten roots. Humidity: Alpenglow grows well in average household humidity levels when grown indoors.
Prefers a drier environment. Normal household humidity is good for this plant.
Super pretty, eye-catching plant. It was mostly green with a tiny bit of brown on the ends when I got it, but you can see in the photo that some of that pink tone can be seen on the surface of the leaves now! Super cute!.
We have been having trouble with our lawn for the past couple of years. We live in Colorado and where it is dry and the winters have been cold with very little snow. I read about Dr. Jimz products in the almanac and I decided to try them.
My husband generally cares for the lawn with commercial fertizers. I wanted something more organic, especially since I started a vegetable garden. I applied the Velvet Green lawn food and what a difference.
Even with weeks of 90 degree weather, our grass was looking healthy, way less weeds, and thicker. A friend was visiting st the end of October and noticed that our grass was greener than our neighbors.
My husband was so happy with the results that he asked if I was doing anything for the Fall. I am waiting for our shipment so that I can do the Fall fertilizing. Can’t wait to see the results next year.
Hi Jim – thank you for what you do. I bought a new house in 2020 that was built in 1960 in the suburbs of Buffalo, NY (Amherst). It is a very old suburb that is reasonably mature. I did remove a bunch of old stale plants, and am working on creating a monarch garden.
That said, I replaced some patches of old area with blue grass sod. The Sod did very well with my watering, but the old grass was much more of a yellow to gold color. As much as Western new york had the third wettest July (not here to debate climate) once i applied your grass application, within a week the new grass and the old grass looked the same.
By using your fertilizer on the grass, everything now has the same color and almost shows the same growth patters. The understanding of the natural approach is the key to the future as science and technology learn together.
Keep up the good work and let natural law prevail.

I needed some greenery to put in a piece of pottery. This was perfect. It looks real and the more muted green coloring was a little different from the fake greenery you usually see. Was a bit more expensive than I would like, so I only gave it four stars.
As the first lawn care system powered by local soil and climate data, Sunday knows what Lone Star lawns need to thrive. With potassium for hydration management and slow-release nitrogen for sustained greening in extreme heat, Texas Green liquid lawn fertilizer embraces the power of nature to improve your lawn without unwanted pesticides.
Does it work? Yesby boosting active plant growth and fortifying your soil. Is it easy? Absolutely. With our easy-to-use fertilizer pouch, no spreader is necessary. Just attach to any hose and spray it on!.
Our yard was *seriously* struggling with both dead patches of grass and weeds taking over. We decided to uproot all of it and then reseed vs. purchasing sod for cost savings, so we thought the Sunday lawn care would be a great plan forward to ensure every step was done correctly.
We couldn’t have been more wrong. After reseeding, our weeds grew back at an exponential rate. I contacted Sunday for help from one of their consultants, and their response was “some lawns will see an increase in weeds when switching to Sunday”.
I’m sorry WHAT!? I couldn’t believe it. They gave us a free bag of seed and $100 credit towards Sunday, but at this point there’s no use in using their products. We ended up having to purchase sod in the end after all.
Moral of the story – if your lawn needs serious help, contact the professionals.
I love EZ straw brand. It’s cut the right length to achieve a happy medium between staying put and being easily worked. I’ve never had problems with washout or blowing away. It’s kept my seeds safe and sound through germination, seedlings, & adult stages.
I also use it liberally as a mulch in new beds. I’ve found it breaks down well, adding valuable organic material to the soil, while holding moisture and keeping roots cool. I also like the initial color, though that fades into a natural soil tone after a couple of months.
Compare the few pictures to see the difference. The “established” beds are this-season new also. The ground cover will intentionally spread over the next few seasons, so the remaining straw won’t be visible.
I’m very pleased with this brand and will most definitely be using it again next season. I have no complaints at all.
This is my first time using EZ Straw. I bought it for covering my newly planted asparagus to help retain moisture. I had quite a bit left over, so I used it to mulch other areas of my large garden. We had a light rain the next that probably helped activate the tack.
Two days later we had terrible storms move thru, with high winds and torrential rains (even a tornado 2. 5 miles away). As you can see, my EZ Straw is still in place! I’m really surprised at previous negative reviews related to the EZ Straw staying put in wind!.
i ordered 4 bags all 2. 5cf. 1 1st came in smaller size bundle. that was great! i could handle it and store it very well. But the other 3 that were shipped a few days later were a big disappointment! They are packaged in very large bundles also 2.
5cf. so i didn’t like that. on top of that, I should have known that the straw would come with thousands of seeds, but i didn’t think about that until i saw it all sprouting in my seed beds and containers and planting areas.
The seed part was my own naivete. I had seen many you tube videos where the gardener used straw or woodchips everywhere. one guy mentioned ez straw. no mention of the sprouting straw seeds. so my bad for not anticipating that.
the biggest issue for me is the very large packaging compared to the 1st very compact package all with the same 2. 5 cubic feet volume. i do want to say that tractor supply had a much better price than every other retailer i checked online.
Maiden Grass, Miscanthus sinensis ‘Gracillimus’, forms large clumps of gracefully arching foliage. Its dense structure provides sufficient cover when used as a peaceful privacy screen or border. This is a late blooming cultivar compared to most grasses.
Copper tassels form in fall and help to set a beautiful autumn scene in the landscape. Flower heads fade to silvery white and foliage turns gold after the first frost. Maiden Grass ‘Gracillimus’ should be left standing throughout winter for interest and to protect the crowns.
Cut back in late winter just before new growth emerges. Easy to maintain and well-suited for new gardeners Adds height and dimension to landscaping Graceful grasses can create up to a 10-foot spread Grows in clumps and is often used as edging Dramatic, graceful shrubs for a variety of locations While most often used as edging, maiden grass is an ornamental shrub that works in a range of areas.
With its clumping growth pattern and up to 6-foot height, their slender blades and prominent plumes are popular among homeowners and landscapers alike. They grow best in full sun, but they’re adaptable to many soil types – from gardening soil to clay.
Not only does maiden grass add a rich green color during the spring and summer months, but it will fade to a golden shade during fall. With blades that move in the slightest breeze, maiden grass is adds instant interest and curb appeal.
Great for beginning gardeners Maiden grass is easy to maintain and requires very little care. This makes it not only highly suitable for those who have little experience in growing plants, but also for those who are often away from home but who still want a beautiful landscaping design.
It also thrives in containers, adding visual interest to patios, porches and terraces. Find a variety of uses for Maiden Grasses They’re not only a simple but dramatic addition to your landscaping design, but maiden grasses can also be used to create a living “wall” for privacy.
This makes them especially appealing for those who live in cities, for use along patios or even in commercial locations to create separated sitting or dining areas. Hardiness zones: 5-10 Height: 4-6 feet Width: 3-4 feet.
The conclusion of grass for sandy soil in north carolina is that it is possible to grow grass in sandy soil, but it requires more effort than growing grass in other types of soil. Sandy soil is more likely to lose moisture and nutrients, so grasses grown in sandy soil need to be watered more often and fertilized more often than grasses grown in other types of soil.
