20 Best Grass Fertilizer For Summer (2023 Updated)

Nothing disagreeable about the smell, works well for encouraging healthy green growth. My experience is that it may indeed discourage deer. Can’t swear it’s true, but there are a lot of deer in my immediate area.

They randomly eat whatever isn’t fenced but don’t seem to touch things that have Milorganite scattered around. I use light feedings more frequently. Would give 5 stars except for my concern for what household chemicals could have been dumped down drains.

Maybe my thought is outdated but just the same, I don’t use it directly on my vegetable garden. Instead, I use it on the extended field/yard and use the cuttings for compost and mulch. The Milorganite does a good job keeping the field productive.

I’ve been lawn guy for more than 45+ years. I’m passionate about how my lawn looks. Always had one the best, if not THE best, looking lawn in the neighborhoods I’ve lived. Read all the rave reviews about Milorganite, so a couple of months ago I thought I’d give it a try.

My lawn is about 2,500 sq. ft. Applied nearly a full bag with my hand spreader, and waited to see the lush green appear. Didn’t happen. Only a minor change. Then the record breaking heat came in brutally.

High nineties and triple digits every day and has not let up. Everyone knows a healthy, nourished lawn will withstand that kind of weather much better than a weak lawn. Then the brown areas began to appear even with stepping up watering.

I even resorted to supplemental hand watering those areas. Still looked pretty bad in many areas and pale green. Tried applying a little more Milorganite and watered well every morning. No change. My lawn was weak, malnourished, and suffering from the heat.

So, I went a bought a bag of my old favorite, Scotts Turf Builder All-In-One Lawn Food and applied it. A week and half later, my lawn is thick, lush, and deep green again, and the brown areas are coming back to life and looking good again.

I have even cut back on the watering and it’s still looking like it should. Healthy, deep green, nourished and strong. So, sorry Milorganite. You’re just weren’t up to the task nor my standards. Oh, BTW, your dark black color makes it impossible to see where it’s going when applying by hand spreader!.

I ordered this bag of Milorganite in the Eufaula, Ala store. It was shipped to me directly with no shipping charge. This is my second bag of Milorganite. I am using it as recommended to me by Pike’s Nursery staff in Marietta, Ga as an effective deer deterrent.

I spread the first bag about a month ago around azaleas and camellias, which have been heavily hit by the deer, this past winter. I notice my roses and daylilies, which were also being eaten, are now growing normally.

The azaleas are putting out new growth. I hope Milorganite is repelling deer, but also realize the deer have new spring growth to eat in the woods. In any case my friend has been using Milorganite for years on his lawn with great results on his grass.

Last year he didn’t use it and they had a lot of deer damage in the yard. They hadn’t put the two together. I have high hopes.

I have used another brand and boy is that thing dusty. Had to wear a face mask, pants and long sleeve shirt just to apply it. And was a mess. At least 10% of the product was blown onto myself. Wasn’t a pleasant experience.

The Greenshocker on the other hand was very ez to apply using the Scotts setting at 3 1/2. It spread evenly and cleanly. Absolutely no powder / dusts being blown all over. When it come humic acid / iron application, Greenshocker by far is the easiest and cleanest method to apply.

Will update in 3 days to see if there are any greening as they claimed.

I’ve been getting the lawn ready for the spring, over the last few weeks. The GreenShocker added that nice touch, to all of my previous efforts. I applied the product on Saturday, and by Monday the lawn looked like I had one of those professional lawn care companies come by and spray down some chemicals.

I mean that lawn was so green, I couldn’t believe it! It makes the lawn look so healthy and attractive. I’m very satisfied with this product and I’ll be ordering a few more bags for the future, before the price goes through the roof like everything else under the sun.

I have been using Jonathan Green products for a number of years now. As a lawn enthusiast I am extremely happy with the results that are produced. By simply following Jonathan Green instructions for the New American Lawn I get amazing results, results that receive comments from many neighbors, friends, etc.

I highly recommend anyone to try these products and see the results.

This is the only product I could find that met the recommendations of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources for zoysia grass. I could not find a product with these ratios in the local lawn

I sprayed more than half of the solution about 5 days ago. Looks like the grass is changing from yellow to green. I wish there was more in the bottle- I have a large space to cover. Definitely recommend.

My centipede starts to grow and a late spring freeze knocks it back. So it goes into summer with yellow areas and large yellow spots. The more normal green/yellow has been restored in 24 hours, not perfect but more than good enough to keep the HOA off my back.

Booster has helped very much. (what has not worked) usual fertilizer, liquid iron, lime, re-sodding in spots, top soil,.

I bought a jug of Gordon’s Weed & Feed to try last fall. I have been using Scott’s fertilizer for several years but the last two years it seems to me that Scott’s has quit working like it use to and doesn’t touch killing the clover.

One treatment of the Gordon’s has made a world of difference to my lawn. I just put a spring treatment of Gordon’s on 3 days ago. Lawn is looking really well and getting thicker. I highly recommend the Gordon’s Weed & Feed 15-0-0.

I live in a neighborhood therefore I do have a small yard. Purchased a backpack sprayer because the handheld sprayers do not hold enough for a good application. I spray mid March and again mid to late April.

It works great on weeds and helps my lawn become thick and green. Definitely recommend to all my neighbors.

I was having trouble with sand burs and stickers in my lawn for several summers. I used a preemergent and Roundup before the season, but I wanted something to help kill them during the summer. I had been told that a thicker lawn would help.

I used Weed & Feed 2 times during the summer, and didn’t cut my lawn as short. I had very few problems with the stickers, and other weeds, this summer. Adding this product is the main thing I did different than in previous years.

I wish it was a higher concentration so the jug would last longer.

I bought my place in February. and new the lawn was going to take some real work. Looked like a dandelion farm. I am in the south and the lawn is bermuda grass I tried a name brand weed and feed granule with almost no luck.

So I treated with Gordon Trimek using a 20 gallon boom sprayer. Worked great on the dandelions. Still have some wood sorrel lingering. Treated with lawn and pasture 20-0-0 and the lawn has taken off.

Green in a few days. Plan to let the grass get a little deeper root then hit it with a spot treatment to get the few lingering weeds but I am 80% to where I want to be for 1/3 what I spent on the big name weed and feed with almost no results.

Before I get to far I bought this knowing it only covered about a 1/3 of an acre per bottle. And it worked great. Grass greenede up after a few days and a fresh mowing. I just wish they had something that covered more square footage for the price.

The reason I’m buying liquid fertilizer is to use it in a sprayer bc I have 5 acres to cover. using three of these per acre gets a little old having to stop and mix again and again. Why not come out with a more concentrated version that covers 1, 2 or 5 acres like your weed killer does? This way I can dump one bottle, mix it with water and spray without needing to stop so often?.

I bought this product 3 weeks ago, and have to say that it exceeded my expectations. I normally use liquid fertilizers on my lawn, but have much more experience with higher end products that include micro-nutrients.

I was looking for a straight nitrogen source that I could tank mix with herbicide when spraying weeds in my lawn. This did exactly what I was looking for. The biggest surprise for me was how much darker green my lawn became.

I feed my lawn regularly, and wouldn’t think it would be deficient in any nutrients, specifically nitrogen. I soil test annually and feed the lawn per the reccomendation. my My other comment would be that I am surprised how long the additional N lasted.

Also-no burn in the lawn when I applied it. It is surprising how quickly the lawn responds to a folier feed vs. Granular feeding. Would definitely reccomend this product to anyone. Hope you have as good of results as I had!.

I have used this product on my lawn multiple times over the last few years and it always performs well. The product is very easy to apply with a rotary spreader and I always get good coverage, with plenty of product to treat my entire lawn.

This produces a deep green, lush lawn quickly. I went from a light green lawn to a healthy looking deep green lawn within 3-4 days. I have used other granular and liquid lawn fertilizers, where it is difficult to determine if the product is actually doing anything, but this product is always performs excellent.

I have never had any regrets buying this product versus cheaper quality brands and formulations. I have also never had any issues with this product staining my driveway or street, but I am always careful to cleanup any excess granules that I get on any concrete surfaces.

I used a professional lawn care service last year and my lawn already looks 10 times better after using this product than it ever looked last year.

I do not like killing things but I also dont like rodents in my house. I live in a rural area and we get mice in the house occasionally. I use the tomcat traditional mouse traps in my attic and in accessible places.

They work extremely well and are super easy to set up. My dog can be attracted to them as I use peanut butter to lure the beasts and i am always afraid he will get his snout snapped. I decided to try the Tomcat Rat & Mouse Killer Child & Dog Resistant trap.

It is very durable and strong, Its easy to handle and can be placed wherever it’s needed. It can be placed against the wall or just on the floor. This is disposable and safe. The bait is already in the station, so no need to be handle any bait at all.

Overall, a really good trap that works really well.

The mice are starting to come into the barn and garage as the cooler weather is drawing them to the warmth. We keep feed in these locations to include dog food, chicken feed, corn and grain. Unfortunately the mice like to eat these products as we notice holes in the bags.

I’ve always had issues trying to get my lawn to look nice due to the terrible soil. I have my lawn aerated, seeded and starter fertilizer installed yearly. This is the first year that I’ve tried Jonathan Green Green Up and it has wowed me! My yard is sooo thick and dark green colored this year!! I have a mixture of Zoysia and tall fescue growing and eventually the Zoysia will spread through-out and take it over which is what i want to happen.

I love Jonathan Green products. I believe they are far better than the other brands out there. This particular item Jonathan Green Green-Up is awesome! In a few days after you drop this lawn food you will notice your lawn becomes a beautiful dark green color which I love.

I have been a Scott’s customer for years, and have always had a beautiful lawn. I used the crabgrass preventer in early Spring, followed by Super Turf builder plus 2 in late June, Step 3 fertilizer in August, and Winter fertilizer in late September/early October.

Never had a problem. Late last Summer we had a pool installed, and this Spring I decided to overseed the front yard to fill in the tracks from the construction equipment. I used Turf Builder Starter Food For New Grass Plus Weed Preventer in place of the crabgrass preventer I normally used.

You guessed it. White and yellow patches all over the front yard, which look like fertilizer burn. I know it’s not burned because I’ve dealt with that over the years, and am extremely careful. It’s been 2 weeks, and although it’s not getting any worse, I’m wondering when it will return to green? Looks horrible.

I would definitely not recommend this product for use as a starter fertilizer when overseeding an existing lawn.

I started a new lawn last year and fought weeds all summer. This Spring I oversewed my lawn. and applied this product with reservations. Weed preventers with new seeds was always a No No. I always used a standard fertilizer in Spring, waited 6-8 weeks and then tackled the mature,healthy,well fed weeds.

At first I was disappointed, the seeds sprouted nicely but so did the weeds. In time, I noticed the weeds were getting pale. Weeks went by and most of the weeds were gone and the lawn was much fuller.

I applied a second application 6 weeks later and now have a dark green lush lawn almost totally weed free. Scott’s New grass and weed preventer is now my choice for spring fertilizer. Give it time to work and I think you will like this product.

Had minimal detectable effect [i. e. browning] after two weeks, and then only on fine spiral-bur clover. Had no detectable effect whatsoever on all other broad-leaf weeds like Dandelions. Just followed up today with spray on weed killer.

Over the years I’ve found most any brand of weed and feed nearly useless on lawn weeds in Central CA, valleys or coastline. You must fertilize, then spray for weeds separately to have any significant effect.

Lawn green-up was also minimal after two weeks.

Comparing this to Scotts Turf builder: Ingredients are similar N/P/K is 29-0-4 compared to Turf builder’s 32-0-4 It costs a fair amount less As Scott’s says; their pellets are all in one. I can see that as a potential benefit as their fertilizer will be a 32-0-4 mix everywhere it is spread.

The Ace brand does have separate pellets, so if they are not evenly mixed, it will not be a 29-0-4 mix everywhere it is spread. BUT to my eye, it was evenly mixed. AND the pellets did not stick together like what happens with Scott’s fertilizers I have used.

Another reviewer complained that it did not work well with his Scott’s drop spreader. For my Scott’s hand held broadcast spreader, the fact that the pellets did not stick together made it work better than Scott’s fertilizers for my spreader.

I am going to stick with this.

Usually, I buy the Scotts 4 step program, but, this year I decided to try the ACE brand since it was cheaper. My Review isn’t really based on the effectiveness of the product as that is yet to be seen, but, more about the application.

I have a Scott Elite spreader that is 1 year old. The step 1/2/3 use 3. 5 for spreader settings. I didn’t change this when adding the ACE crabgrass and very little was coming out. The yellow crystals appear quite larger than Scotts.

The bag says to use setting 4, but, that was even low. I ended up bumping up to 4. 5 to get correct distribution. So word of caution is to increase your number if coming from Scotts.

The Long Island turf builder worked very good in so far as fertilizing the grass, resulting in a lush green grass. However, years ago Scotts went to a uniform pelletized formula where the product is a consistent mix, similar to your regular Turf Builder and many of your other products.

It goes on very evenly and flows out of the drop spreader very well. This was a big improvement over what I would call the other cheaper products on the market then as well as today where they all contain these very hard particles.

Your Long Island mix has for some reason gone back to this and I was very disappointed as soon as I opened the bag. I knew what was ahead. The very hard white granules kept the sliding door on the bottom of the spreader from closing several times.

In addition they are very noisy and over time I am sure they would do damage to the spreader as you hear the auger grinding on them. One of the reasons I have been using Scotts products for years is because I believe Scotts is the only product that does not have these irritating and damaging very hard white inert particles in the mix.

PLEASE DO NOT GO BACKWARDS AND DO THIS TO ALL OF YOUR OTHER PRODUCTS! I would give the product a higher rating if not for the above problem.

The Scotts® Turf Builder® Long Island Lawn Food is exactly what my lawn needed. I carefully followed the instructions and within a week I noticed a huge difference. After continued use, it made my lawn thicker, greener and healthier! I’ve been getting compliments on how lush my lawn is.

Prior to using this product there were a few large dead spots. Now they are filled in! I’m very impressed to see these results. Nothing else has worked as well as this turf builder. This product is durable and very reliable.

Tried this lawn food this year for my lawn. Follow the instruction using the hand spreader, the result was great. Nice green, lush. Even a friend commented on it. Well comparing to last year where I used a different type of lawn food, and cause local “burnt” spots.

Furthermore, living in Queens, which is really part of Long Island, it’s nice to know that this product is design with Long Island waterway in mind.
