20 Best Golf Irons For Senior Mid Handicapper (2023 Updated)

Ever since TM launch the P790 series I’ve been playing them. I received the 17′ version as soon as they were released and loved them. There were a few negatives in my eyes, the first was feel/sound. They felt very clicky and didn’t have the muted sound I prefer.

Then there was the hot shots that flew an extra 10-15. This became a more common occurrence for me that became hard to predict. Lastly, they were a bit clunky looking from the top. When the P770 was released last year I jumped on the bandwagon to minimize the hot shots and get a more compact look.

I really loved the look of the irons and the more predictable yardages but they spun a lot for me. The 770’s are more traditionally lofted which means I was adding a lot more spin to the ball which didn’t fit well for my game.

When the new P790s launched that looked more like the 770’s I was immediately intrigued. The sound and feel has improved greatly from gen 1 P790’s. When you look down the shaft the topline is a bit more beveled and is much more appealing.

On the sim I’m getting very consistent numbers. My miss tends to be a toe miss and I’m blown away by the carry distances I’m getting with a toe miss. Normally this is a 15+ yard miss and I’m seeing minimal impact.

The new P790 is everything TM is stating it is, forgiving, low spin, distance iron with plenty of height. Don’t sleep on them.

I am a loyal Taylormade fan and recently needed to upgrade from 2011 Taylormade Burner 2. 0 irons with whippy regular shafts. My golf game has improved tremendously since 2011 and needed a stiff shaft to compensate for my swing speed and tendency to miss left.

These irons are incerdible! Admittedly, I liked them at first but struggled hitting them consistently. After about 8 rounds and several practice sessions, these things feel sooo good in my hand. The profile gives me confidence at address but the topline isn’t too thin to intimidate me.

Coming from a cast iron club, the feel on these clubs when you strike the sweet spot is incredible. These irons go far and have a beautiful ball flight. I like the stock 105g stiff shaft from Dynamic Gold versus the custom options that were available.

I am a 12 handicap and feel confident these irons will help me move into mid-high single digits soon!.

I was fit and Purchased the P790s in late 2019. Absolutely loved them at first; for about 1. 5 years. Then started having control issues with the 7 iron and 5 iron. I play just about 1 to 2 times/week but range every other day.

Swings that previously had that butter feel; felt dead. Lost distance and simply no control. The 6 iron was fine. Took them to Club Champion to have them looked at. I suspect the speed foam separated from the metal face creating dead spots.

They techs agreed this is likely what happened after putting me on the launch monitor with all the clubs. Taylormade would not replace the heads on the 5 and 7. I paid $2,400 for the clubs. Can’t sell them due to the problem and Taylormade not replacing as they are just outside the 2 year warranty.

I had recommended these clubs to a friend and husband. Friend’s clubs are also 1. 5 years old and he has the same exact problem. I’m just waiting for the same issue with my husband’s clubs. The technology has failed and Taylormade, despite the significant cost of these clubs don’t stand behind.

While I loved these clubs initially; I would not throw good money after bad by purchasing a new set. Off to PXG or other.

I really wanted to love these irons but they just fell short of my expectations for a premium forged cavity back in today’s market. Looks/Aesthetics – they are a home run in the bag from a looks standpoint.

My biggest issue is with the crazy milling on the face. I found that to be a huge distraction, especially on sunny days. The milling created this weird glare that drove me crazy looking down at the ball.

Feel/Sound – definitely fell short in this category when compared to competitive irons like the Callaway X Forged CB, Srixon ZX7, Titleist 620 CB, Mizuno Pro 223, etc. For a premium price point I was really disappointed that feel on impact wasn’t better.

Durability – I’ve seen some comments that these aren’t super durable. It’s a softer forged iron so it got some bag chatter pretty quickly. Very similar to the P760 irons. Don’t expect these to keep their sexy appearance for too long.

Performance – again kind of lack luster. Good flight and spin but I really wish these had some leading edge relief to help get through the turf easier. Look at the Srixon or Titleist cavity back irons and steal a page from that design playbook and these would be much better in this category.

Overall I had really high hopes that these would be in my bag for a while but after just a couple of rounds I knew these weren’t going to make the cut. There are much better feeling/sounding irons on the market that perform as good or better.

I really hope the team at TM goes back to the drawing board and dials in their next cavity back iron to make some improvements.

Just bought 5 DHY this looking for an alternative to hybrid in the summer. Ball is carrying and rolling farther now then in spring/early summer. Don’t need as much carry in summer as ball rolls on hard fairway and sometimes pull my hybrid off the T.

Have Sim 5 Hybird. Luv it. So tried this as alternative to hybrid. Jackpot!! Zero pulls off the T. 2 good T shots on Par 4’s and a great one also. Shot of the summer from light rough 185 yard to 14 feet of pin.

It’s slightyl shorter in length to Hybrid which gives me adder confidence. Great T shot option when going way out there not smart and great from rough as rescue!!.

I was lucky enough to get the new stealth udi in store. I have had one range session and 18 hole round. Let me start off by saying this is definitely a club for consistent ball strikers. I’m not saying I’m the most consistent but I feel it’s geared towards the single digit handicappers.

When you hit it on the center of the face it’s really hot. On the track man it had very high ball speeds. Surprisingly for the 2 iron it got more height than I was expecting which I like but also had the penetrating ball flights too.

Great fairway finder club to put in the bag.

I have had the Stealth DHY for couple weeks now and am happy with it. When you hit it correctly the ball will fly as advertised. If you hit the short grass of the tee it will roll and roll. I advise taking to driving range directly out of box and hitting 50 – 100 balls to get “your feel” for the club.

Also, do your research. The UDI may be better for you (after researching both clubs I believed the DHY was a better fit for me strictly for the forgiveness factor). The sound it makes (SNAP!) when you hit cleanly is contagious! NOTE: I purchased the Stealth DHY 2 Iron.

I’ve long held the belief that golf equipment upgrades is 99% marketing. I’m not a great player, but I had a few good summers with driver and my irons, and have struggled the past year. I realize it’s due to my swing, but I just got the wild hair to go test some new equipment.

I was hitting a Nike Vapor, regular shaft drive & the original RBZ regular irons and hybrids. The club fitter had me try several models and then moved me to a stiff shaft +10g, Sim2 Max-D. The increase in distance was at least 20 yards, now that I’ve had it in play, it’s more like 40-50 yards.

But better than that, was that it’s incredibly forgiving – I can pop this thing up and still hit it 240 middle of the fairway. Of course it’s capable of bad strikes like any other driver, when the swing gets urky jerky, bad things happen with any club.

But on average this thing is a massive improvement. I then got to trying irons, I used to hit my RBZ 7i about 160-165. I tried the Sim2 Max 7i (stiff) and was hitting it 185 on the launch monitor, with the same high ball flight.

I thought this can’t be real, but I was convinced enough to purchase the entire set (5-AW) and the 3 and 4 hybrids. I had to get the AW, because my wedges are 52, 56, 60 – there would be too large of a gap without it.

I am launching the ball the same distances as I was getting on the monitor in the shop. My friends are regularly in disbelief at just how long and high I’m hitting these clubs. I’m right there with them.

Who knows, if I ever learn to chip and putt better, I might actually get a decent handicap. I started as about a 17, but it’s coming down just off the strength of my iron and driver play as I type this.

All in all, believe the hype. These things are lethal and worth every penny.

I went into a golf shop with my Cobra Amps last weekend and compared the head shapes to all the clubs they had, and surprisingly the Cleveland Launcher XL irons seemed to match. So I decided to finally try to replace the Cobra Amps after a decade of use and repeated unsuccessful tries to replace them.

So I bought Cleveland Launcher XL irons with Catalyst 60 stiff shafts. The Cleveland Launcher XL irons are incredible. They legitimately go at least 10 yards further than the Cobra Amps. They also just go straight.

Shot an 80 on a really hard track today, primarily because of the irons. And the 5 iron seems to go about as far as my 19 degree hybrid but doesn’t snap hook like that club sometimes does. A straight hitting 195-yard 5 iron was totally unexpected (especially since my Amp 5 iron only goes like 180 max) and is just really a great thing for tight tee shots.

I hit a 7 iron almost 170 today; normal length is 155. That’s insane.

I am a current female tournament gopher so I decided upgrade my irons this year, I had heard a lot about these club but never tested them. They took me by surprise from the first hit due to the soft feel off the face, med- high ball flight and accuracy with the 4 through 7 irons.

The shorts irons played like game improvement irons but with a little more spin than normal. The extra-long/over size heads have never been my favorite but these club are so forgiving and the V Soul allows me to have great Turf contact just about anywhere on the course.

The distance was not the longest in my fitting but the overall ease to hit these clubs forced me to bag them. EASY EASY EASY with accuracy!!!!!!!! Down 3 strokes in 6 weeks.

Cobra will not let you down. Everything that I wanted in a club. You can feel the head and the shafts are light. Would recommend these to all senior golfers.

First I’m a lefty. Always difficult to find clubs, until I found Callaway Pre Owned. Originally bought Apex pro eight years ago. I’m a “0” handicap. Won many tournaments & Sr club Championships with them.

Then my distance started to go, so I wanted an upgrade to get more distance. In Nov I won a Winter Championship tournament & had $1000 in pro shop money so decided to Purchased Apex 21 irons, new in Nov & Got a bit more distance, but wasn’t the same feel.

So after 3 months, traded them for Apex 21 pro at Pre Owned. Better feel, but lost distance. I wasn’t happy with them so Decided to try Apex 19, True temper steel 95 shafts. Unfortunately there weren’t many LH sets available on PRE Owned, but finally found a set with “average “ quality.

Got them the other day, and were like a set you played with a couple seasons, but overall good shape. I traded up, so nothing out of pocket. Had to replace the grips, which I do myself. Hit them on the range & got back the lost distance & like them better than the Apex 21.

Decent feel, better than 21’s in my opinion. I’m over 65, so I went from hitting a 5 iron 205 15 yrs ago to 175-180 now. So the Indian and not the arrow was the problem, but I had to find a set that still gives me lost distance but still has the accuracy.

Apex 19 helped. I don’t hit the 5 iron 200…that’s long gone, but over 180. Highly recommend. I had gone to Golf Galaxy hitting clubs, different shafts etc, but until you hit them on the course you really don’t know.

Moral of story, is amazing what we will do to find the right clubs.

This club is the very best driving iron on the market with one overwhelming flaw. They put a recoil 95gr shaft in it that can’t handle repeated use with swing speeds over 100mph. I had the head fly off of mine on impact.

Don’t get me wrong it was spectacular. Ball flying down the middle of the fairway with the club head in close pursuit. When I took it into the shop they had 6 yes SIX other SRIXON driving Irons with the same issue sitting on the repair table.

The Recoil shaft they installed breaks down after repeated use causing a complete catastrophic failure. After talking with Srixon customer service they said that this was a fluke and if I sent it in they might repair it under warranty.

The club is less than a year old and they “Might” be able to help me out. Luckily my local shop took care of me and got a new shaft put in although it was at my expense. Srixon Customer service is the laughing stock of the golf world!.

Having never been a fan of hybrid golf clubs, I wasn’t sure what to expect when purchasing this club. As an avid iron player, I hoped this would compliment my long game. My hope was this club would bridge the gap between my 3 iron and my driver.

It was a perfect fit! The shaft fits my swing perfectly, the head has a pleasant sound on impact. I was amazed at the ability of this club to get the ball in the air, which is usually what a hybrid is known for.

If you like hitting irons, then I would highly recommend this club. The only drawback to the driving iron, is the ability to get out of the rough. I knew that going in, so it didn’t bother me.

I now have the 4 ZX utility now in the bag after success with the 3. The clubs have a high ball flight, similar to a hybrid, but with more control. The clubs are easy to knock off a little distance by gripping down and this keeps the flight high.

They are great tee shot and fairway clubs and are way more consistent than long irons. They retain the feel of a well struck iron from anywhere on the face. They look like a traditional iron, which is nice, and are a great blend with my ZX7 irons.

The shaft is great and the perfect weight for these clubs, slightly lighter than a traditional steel shaft.
