20 Best Golf Irons For Senior High Handicapper (2023 Updated)

Played these for almost a year now , about 40 rounds. Try to ignore reviews where they state right out of the box or played once and love them. Let’s hit them for awhile and really know the results. I love these irons.

Knew because of loft would be hitting one club less , 8 has replaced 7 and so on , but man these things fly. The 5 iron , nicknamed rocket , is now my driving iron. Being a senior golfer and play form the senior tees do play some par 4s that are less than 340 yards.

Well hello Rocket , so far has maxed out at 231 , averaged off tee 215-220. They are so solid , much easier to hold solid through contact. Slice is now a rarity , wish I could say non existent. Sound off impact is clear solid and refreshing.

Have read some reviews about holding their finish , mine have held up great. I play public courses so terrain not always the best , but mine have held up very well. Made such an impact on me and results one of my golf partners now owns a set and loves them.

They are beautiful irons that fly true straight and long and really help this old body when it doesn’t fell like helping.

For the past 10 years I have been playing with hand me down 1970’s clubs but recently started to rent newer clubs when I go out on golfing trips. On my last trip I was fortunate enough to try last year’s Sim’s as my rental and I shot the best round of my life.

Fast forward to the start of this season and I’m ready to update my bag. I attended a TaylorMade fitting event at my local pro shop and was fitted into the Sim2 Max OS as I was looking for the most forgivable club with the best distance and control.

During the fitting only the 7 iron was testing and I was averaging an additional 33% of distance on the shot tracker when compared to my prior set of club. While this addition in distance appears to be great it comes at a hidden cost.

The loft of the Sim2 Max OS was 10 degrees greater than what was currently in my bag and I didn’t realize this until my purchase and delivery of the clubs. The lofts on the Sim2 Max OS clubs are strong and the loft steps between irons are great.

It wasn’t until I had all my clubs at the range did I notice that gap between irons was much bigger than expected and too big for me to manage on the course leaving me in a lot of situation where I didn’t have the right club to hit a small green.

The other issue I had was with the club bounce. These clubs have a much higher than normal bounce which varies by club and if not properly managed by your grip and stance will lead you to skulling the ball.

The bounce is very high on the lower irons and this was problematic for me on par 3s. Due to the loft and the bounce I was unable to get the 4 or 5 irons to hit a ball off the ground and also had trouble getting my balls up in the air with the other irons.

When I was able to get them in the air the flight path was shallow and the ball had limited stopping power due to the flight path and roll. The only other thing to note was the club faces scratched and dinged easily and it was very noticeable after one bucket at the range and two rounds of golf.

While these clubs may be great for most people they were not great for me. The strong loft, high bounce, low flight, and limited stopping power were enough for me to try and return them. Before buying this set of clubs I would highly recommend that you get a proper fitting and conduct a gap test with the clubs prior to buying them.

Make sure you purchase them from an authorized dealer who has a reasonable return policy. If I’m unable to return these clubs I will be playing with buyers remorse the rest of the season.

I got a bonus from work and decided I would treat myself to my first iron fitting at the PGA Tour Superstore. What a great decision for me! I knew the irons I wanted to get based on reading about them and, as it turns out, I couldn’t hit them to save my life! Of course, I have known about TaylorMade forever but I’ve never owned any of their equipment.

After almost an hour and a half hitting four different brands of irons, these were the clear winner. As a 61-year-old, I ended up with graphite shafts +1 inch. I am 6’5″ tall but I’ve always use standard off the rack clubs.

They feel so much more comfortable. When I bought these irons, I got the set including 5-AW. After four rounds, I ordered the 4 iron (a club I could never hit with my previous set). The trajectory and yards I have gained with the set of irons is nothing less than amazing for me.

I am going to retire on May 31 and will be out on the golf course often with these bad boys!.

Recently cracked the face on my gamer, Adams black super hybrid and was looking for a similar more rounded shaped hybrid which is rare. I tried out the Apex, Apex Pro, Sim2, Sim2 Max, G425, Tour Edge C721, and TSi2 hybrids.

Out of the bunch, I liked the G425 and the regular Apex because they are extremely forgiving but was not a fan of their iron-like looks. I was close to purchasing a regular Apex but randomly came across this club and was convinced by all the great reviews.

They weren’t lying! The biggest reason to buy this club is that it sits flat and a touch open making it much harder to hook than any other hybrid I have tried. Even adjustable hybrids often have more weight in the heel or a lot of offset making them hook monsters.

Also for a “pro” hybrid this club is extremely forgiving and has a large enough sweet spot for all handicaps. This club launches high and straight, with a true flight (no ballooning) and has a great muted sound/feel.

The stock KBS shaft is also perfect for this club. It feels very stable and is so well balanced that is it hard to overswing. It should be noted that the shaft lengths are a bit shorter compared to other models out there so you may see a slight decrease in distance compared to your current hybrid.

The Mavrik Pro 3 hybrid is 40″ compared to the Sim2 Max 3 hybrid which is 40. 75″. I prefer the shorter shaft because it fits in better with my iron distances and is a bit easier to control but some people may prefer more distance oriented hybrids.

The Mavrik Pro is like a combination of the regular Apex and the Apex UW but half the price since it is a year older. I purchased my mine with the current 25% discount for $115 in “like-new” condition which is an absolute steal for the performance.

Not sure how this club flew under the radar but I guarantee, you will not be disappointed!.

Received the club by post as expected, within timetable stated. Fully boxed and in perfect condition. Have been using another brand driver for the past 5/6 years and due to ageing have lot some metres.

This Mavrik (great name by the way) came with a seniors shaft as ordered. As soon as I held the club it had great feel, comfortable and felt great in the swing. No practice but was out competing against my mates the very next day.

First drive was out of the centre, straight and directly to my target. In fact as I was aiming fairway left I found the ball had gone through the fairway by about 10 metres. Unusual I thought. During that first 18 holes I missed (mishit as was over did the swing speed) only 2 fairways.

I have now used the club in 3 rounds and without doubt I have added between 30/40 metres onto my normal driving distance with the old competitors club. I am nearly overwhelmed with the accuracy and definitely overjoyed with the distance I have gained.

Helped break my handicap in 2 out of the 3 round. A fabulous possession right there. Recommend to all ageing golfers, if using a regular shaft, go grab a Mavrik.

Being a little older now I was looking for a driver with R flex shaft to replace my 909-D2 stiff shafted driver. I read reviews on some of the items on sale. When I saw the review of the shaft in the Mavrik it sounded like a good fit.

I purchased the club – 10. 5 degrees, and left it set at standard loft, etc. The club looks great at address. I have hit stiff shafts in the past because R flex shafts felt too whippy, and the club face too hard to control.

This club has none of that for me. I hit 5 or 6 drives at the range before teeing off the day I bought it, and was amazed at how light it feels, but never feels like the club head is out of sync. During the round I hit drives longer than the 909-D2 with much less effort, which was one thing I hoped for at my age.

The biggest issue I had was remembering to slow down so I could keep a consistent swing path through the shot. I could tell where the ball was going to go easily by the way it felt off the club. Love the sound on flush hits, but mostly it feels like a club I can make a great drive with and not have to muscle it through the swing.

Exactly what I was looking for.

Like many middling to poor golfers, I’ve struggled for 35 years to hit standard irons, especially long irons, with any consistency. I would stand frozen over my old 5 iron with a 1000 swing thoughts about getting the ball airborne.

My first day with my Cleveland irons eliminated that. The balls just. launch! I’m sure these clubs will be regarded as senior golfer clubs but I wish I had these when I was 30. The goal is to get the ball up and moving straight.

These irons do that. I got fitted at Club Champion several years ago and the “fitted” clubs didn’t improve my game. I’ve never had results with irons as I’ve had with the off-the-shelf Cleveland Launcher set.

I’m so excited for league to start! Looking forward to increasing my greens in regulation and decreasing my greens in par!.

I’m shopping for Jew set if irons and hit the launcher XL during session. They performed comparable to Apex DCB but were straighter and about the same distance wise. 6 iron total avg 181. What stood out was top line view over the ball and smash factor.

Extremely easy to hit and performed great with Off center hits. The head is larger than Apex 21 but smooth through hitting zone. Pricing is 75$ less per club wow. Love the feel and height I hit these clubs on the trackman.

Cleveland made wonderful golf club!!! Should have given 5 star but haven’t made purchase or play on course.

I’m 65 years old and have arthritis in my hands, and I don’t have the flexibility I had when I was younger. Golf was getting frustrating because I could no longer hit the ball with any distance or being accurate.

I read about these clubs being more forgiving so I went to the golf shop and asked if I could demo them. To my surprise they are everything they that was said in the advertisement and reviews. I’ve had them about a month and have played 8 rounds and I very pleased with them.

I had to have different grips put on that were larger due to the arthritis in my hands. I’m no pro golfer, but my game is more enjoyable and my distance improved a little and I’m back to having fun on the coarse.

I first hit this club great while in the PGA store looking to purchase either Titleist T300 or Ping G425. I then took it to the range (twice) and felt I made a mistake. So I thought try a round first and then see, after all, I have been playing with my Ping Eye 2 for the past 30 years.

I played decent but felt I lost some accuracy and so I went back to exchange them and hit it against the Titleist and Ping. I walked away with the Mizuno in hand and thought I have to play another round.

Long story short. I have kept these irons and gained about 10 to 15 yards on each club and maintained my accuracy. These are forgiving and the feel is about tied with Titleist T300. I’m in my 50’s and have 11 handicap.

I have now played 5 rounds with these irons and broken 80 twice and haven’t shot above 84. I saved about $300 over the other sets and Im happy about that too. Great irons. Never thought I’d buy a non USA club, but now very glad I did.

One last thing. This iron is the heaviest I hit and some people might not like that, I lost about 2 MPH in swing speed yet increased distance while comparing similar lofted clubs.

I’ve been a fan of Mizuno since I bought a set of JPX800 irons with 115 gram True Temper steel shafts 10 years ago. I really loved the look and playability of those clubs, but with increasing age I lost speed/distance and my ball flight was getting lower to the point I was using my 7 iron to play 130-140 yard holes.

(I used to routinely hitting pitching wedges 130, including my last hole-in-one). A couple of years ago, Club Champion fitted me with the JPX900 hot metal irons. I was impressed with how straight the ball flight was, but the distances (also steel shafts) were about the same as I was hitting and I balked at the steep price and waited.

Recently I went into my local PGA Superstore and hit the JPX921 hot metals with the 75 gram Mamiya EXC shafts, A flex (regular) and was astounded by not only how great they look and how straight the ball flies, but each club hits my shots considerably higher and longer.

What a pleasant surprise to see my 7 iron carry 150 again (really straight) with total distances up to 162. I also had previous success when I replaced my 4 iron with a hybrid and thought it made sense at this point to go ahead and get the combo set with the 5 and 6 hybrids.

All I can say is Wow! I can swing the hybrids just like they are irons, and the distances are dependable with much higher trajectories than my previous 5- and 6-irons. I actually replaced my previous 4-hybrid with my new 5-hybrid because it hits straighter, higher and longer, which makes room in my bag for an additional fairway wood.

The lofts and gaps on the shorter irons allowed me to eliminate one of my gap wedges, so now I’ve got a lot more flexibility in my bag. I’ve spent a couple of hours inside on a launch monitor to develop some trust in yardages but haven’t hit them enough to see if they are workable right or left.

If they continue to hit this straight, I’m looking forward to firing at pins again! I really like the look and feel of the stock gray Golfpride grips.

Purchased a TW sand wedge with a few custom modifications, I ordered with an alternate shaft and bent strong one degree to be 55*. Club was shipped directly from Taylormade quickly which I was happy about.

Unfortunately after having the club checked by a reputable club builder, basically every spec was off. The length which was supposed to be standard was over half an inch short, the loft was 56, and the swingweight was significantly lighter than what’s listed as standard partially due to the shortened length.

I am extremely disappointed with the build quality from TM and expected more from such a big/reputable brand in this industry. Now I’m stuck with a club that is too short and would have to use a shaft extension to play at standard length.

Subpar quality control from the build shop at TM which unfortunately seems to be a relatively common issue. Side note the club head and grind are great. I’m just disappointed with my experience ordering a club with custom specs.

Acquired the SIM Max #7 Rescue club about six months ago to replace my (Callaway Strata Ultimate 7 iron with a 34degree loft), which has proven very difficult for me to hit, as a beginner, of two years.

The SIM Max Rescue club allows me to hit 130 yards, or so, with way more ease and accuracy than the evil 7 iron. Yesterday, the recently ordered SIM 2 Max #3 hybrid arrived. Tomorrow, a regulation 18-hole course with this new club is highly anticipated.

The Callaway Strata Plus #3 fairway wood that I’ve been using has worked well for me. However, due to the good success with the #7 SIM Max Rescue club, it will be nice to see how well the #3 works for me.

The SIM2 Max #3 has 19 degrees versus 15 degrees with the Callaway Strata Plus 3 fairway wood. Hoping for straighter shotsy from the fairway with a little more loft and more success, with longer shots form the rough, with this new club.

Recently married, and a wedding gift from my wife was to go get fitted for new irons (beyond grateful). Went thinking I wanted some ping g425s, ended up going with the sim2 max irons. A lot more accurate/consistent during the fitting with the sims… Eventually they arrive and can’t hit these things to save my life!! Forgiveness my butt, I play a set of mizuno mp14s/Ben hogan 99 apex’s currently and will continue to do so.

Muscle back/blade, and Forged all the way! To make matters worse, I had a heavy top at the range and the speed pocket rubber insert on my 5 iron is now pushed inside the club. What the heck man! Beautiful clubs, but jeez, don’t make things like they used to I guess.

Wish I would’ve known what I know now and went with something different.

I’ve played golf on and off for a while, but started playing on a regular basis this year with shots becoming increasingly consistent. Decided it was time to trade out the old clubs for a full set of SIM 2.

(Drivers, Hybrids, and Irons) What a huge difference in these irons. Easily gained 15+ yards, and they seem effortless. Off center shots still seemed to find the straight line and didn’t affect distance much.

This was proven the first few times I used the club, because you could easily see the dimple marks on the club face. Feedback and sound on the irons is very subtle. Extremely happy with the purchase and look forward to many rounds ahead.

I’d definitely recommend and a few have tried them out now.

I accidentally left my DW on the course on afternoon/evening while playing. As soon as I noticed it missing I turned back and asked all the groups behind me if they found it. No luck. Back at the clubhouse, I notified the cart attendants and called the golf pro, asking them to keep an eye out for the club.

In the meantime, I went ahead and ordered another, identical club, because that club is so sweet I knew it wasn’t coming back. I use it for chipping around the green and for shots in the 100-105 yd. range.

The loft allows the ball to land softly without me having to swing extra hard. It’s my favorite club. Highly recommend Cleveland HB Turbo Irons overall, but that club quickly became my favorite arrow in the quiver.

Purchased online from GolfDiscount. com, June 2022, received Irons 3-days later, worked out just fine. The CLHBT Irons are Impressive. I purchased the Irons with the Miyazeki Graphite shafts, WOW. I just played the clubs recently and enjoyed their confidence building performance.

I can even hit the 5-iron with ease, with my previous clubs I never pulled the 5-iron out the bag. The old metal shaft clubs felt uncontrollable, making them unusable for me. Glad I convinced myself to spend the money, Cheers!.

I also got 2 Cleveland wedges and a 3 hybrid. I’ve used the set for 5 rounds. They are at least 10 yds / one club longer than my old TaylorMade irons. Much more accurate and forgiving. My scores are consistent, and 10-12 strokes lower than the last two seasons.

My confidence has really improved leading to a better swing. I play with a friend with a 10-11 handicap and he liked the irons – so don’t think these are only for high handicap players. Anyone will enjoy equipment that makes the game demonstratively easier.

I’m simply having more fun on the course. Unless you are a low handicap and want very workable clubs, consider the Cleveland Launcher HB turbo clubs.

Previous Driver: Titelist 907 D2 10. 5* Stiff Flex Avg Yardage off tee: 260-280yds Accuracy: Would only hit 4 to 5 fairways per round. New Driver: Callaway Mavrik Sub Zero 9. 0* Stiff Flex (Low Spin Weight Setup) Avg Yardage off Tee from first round played with it: 320-350yds Accuracy: Hit every fairway except one.

(mishit off the heel that still went fairly straight and around 200 yds just off the left edge of the fairway). Prelim statement: Hit the Rogue Irons back in 2016 when I was iron shopping and loved the feel and playability of the irons.

When I heard the Mavrik was the revisitation of the Rogue series I had to try it. Luckily, they had a demo Sub Zero at my local club and I had used it previously before purchasing. After the first round of playing with the demo club I knew I had to get it for my bag.

I purchased a “Like New” condition Sub Zero Driver and 3W from here and upon receiving the clubs they had no imperfections on the club at all. Overall Review: Definitely helped my game off the tee even after the first round played with the Driver.

I hit the ball farther, and straighter (the main reason I “took the plunge”) If you currently own a older driver that is difficult to control off the tee I suggest Taking the Plunge yourself and purchasing this club for your bag.

Haven’t used it enough to see if it will lower my scores any, but with the performance of the first round in the bag and leaving me with yardages into Par 5’s that I had never experienced before with my old Driver, this is certainly going to help me shoot lower scores.

This was my first purchased driver as my previous driver was gifted to me as a set packaged with the 904F 3W, and I have no regrets and feel I made the perfect choice for my game.

I been eyeing these irons for a while now, cobra is one of my favorite golf brands but I never felt like spending the bread to upgrade my irons until I found out that my irons I currently use are way to short for me.

So I went to galaxy golf got fitted and hit some balls with these clubs I’m not joking it out atleast 30-40 more yards onto my 7 iron. I like these clubs a lot and would recommend them but most importantly I would recommend going to galaxy golf and get iron fitted and take shots with other irons and get a good feel for them!.

The 5, 6, and 7 Iron all broke within the first 4 months of purchase. The 5 Iron was coming out of the rough and snapped the head off. The 6 and 7 were completely clean shots from the fairway and both times the head just flew off the shaft.

Cobra did fix them for free but it took 3 weeks each time. Maybe mine was just a bad batch though, other than durability I loved them.

Wanted to do an update on the clubs, I have had them for a little over a month now. I still love these clubs, It did take some time to get used too and Im glad i took my time with these clubs because i wasnt playing good at all but i went into the lab and got my swing back these clubs are very very good, i plan on getting the driver from cobra and wedges as well mine as well complete the set.

I’m stoked. At my level of game, it makes sense to save the $$ and buy used. It’s also better for the environment.
