20 Best Game Ears For Hunting (2023 Updated)

Use these headphones for working with loud garden equipment. The active sound protection means I can still hear ambient noises around me when using equipment. Very comfortable & well built. Only frustrating thing with these headphones is the batteries removal & insertion.

Passive noise attenuation is great for my use. I expected way more from the active noise attenuation, there is quite a lot of white noise. I haven’t tried them outdoors in the open yet but indoors, the active mode can be really annoying.

The volume selection in active mode is also far from refined. There should be like at least five to ten more settings in between every setting as they are. Also the volume of the external input (mini jack) is way to low.

With the volume on your external device on max output, the volume in the headset remains way too quiet. I expected a lot more considering the price level.

Very good ear protection for gun shooter.

This is my second game ear. I purchased the original walker ear about 15 years ago and it just died. It was very loud but had a rolling volume/on off knob that you could adjust to just right. I was very happy with it.

This one has to be at maximum volume to realize any benefit at all. I’d say it’s useable at best. Wish they still made the original. It rocked. This one,not so much. I’ll be turkey hunting next week and will update if I feel any different, but I don’t expect to.

UPDATE: Jus got back from Turkey hunt. This thing was TERRIBLE! It picked up high pitch sounds like small birds ok, although not much volume. Lower pitches like turkey gobbles, no way. I heard them better without it.

Also, using a slate or box call was impossible without removing it from ear first. After a few strokes, I got a piercing and painful high pitched squeal in my ear no matter what the volume was set at.

About 3 seconds after I stopped calling, it went away. So, remove earpiece, use box call, put earpiece in. That got old real quick. Oh and the volume button. Every time you touch it, you get an annoying loud tone, to tell you, you just used the volume button, right.

All in all I’d say this doesn’t hold a candle to Walkers original product, and for me is simply annoying and painful to use, junk. Walker, you have gone way down hill. I expected this to at least be usable at $130.

My hearing loss was caused by wartime service back in the 60’s, probably not the most common cause for most people, but it is what it is. It has become progressively worse over time, since then. Thought I’d try one of these, just to see if it would help.

I’m hearing sounds that I had forgotten. I’m able to watch TV at normal volume again. Those things alone are worth far more to me than the $122 dollar cost of the device. It’s not exactly like the picture, as it has normal earpieces, not the padded earpiece as shown.

But, it does come with earplugs for the other ear, in case you are hunting and need one. The instructions could be better, but they are adequate. The carrying pouch is a nice bonus. I may upgrade this review to 5 stars if the device holds up well, it’s just too early to know that yet.

I rate this item as “okay” because it does work and seems so far to be of good quality. My complaint is that it was stated to be good for use on the shooting range. Not entirely so. High powered rifles or handguns fired often or in rapid succession is too much for these hearing protectors.

I was looking for a protection system I could use with rifle that wasn’t as bulky as headphones. I work on a range for 4 hours at a time each week and haven’t found a headphone I can leave on for a sustained period of time without experiencing a fair amount of discomfort.

Guess I just have to keep looking.

I’ve had these muffs for about 3 years now. I wear them anytime there’s a firearm in my hands and even if I’m working around loud power tools on home projects. I’ve taken several whitetail, countless waterfowl and tons of paper targets wearing them.

They do a good job of amplifying sounds until the shot and I’ve even heard whitetail sneaking up on me before seeing them because of these muffs. Being able to have a normal conversation at a whispering volume with someone seconds before the rapport of a 22-250 in the dead of the Canadian prairie winter without having to choose between hearing damage or spooking your quarry fumbling with hearing protection is absolutely invaluable for me.

I’m a musician so protecting my hearing is of utmost importance to me and now I don’t have to choose. Battery life for my use so far has been incredible. One set of good AAAs for the last 2+ years. A lot of people look at me funny for wearing muffs while hunting but I gave an extra set to a friend of mine last goose hunt and now he’s hooked as well.

They are surprisingly warm even in -20C (if you wear something UNDER the ear cups which I don’t, you’re not getting full protection) and the ONLY downsides to them so far are: – there’s not really anything to combat wind noise -you can’t hear your shot connecting with it’s target, or at least I can’t Long story short, they’re great quality and I’m very happy with them.

Wouldn’t go out without em now and hopefully will never have to. All of my guns except my 22LR have a ridiculously loud shot due to accessories, features or calibre and I’ve only ever bumped them slightly loose once (at the range) and I noticed it afterward.

Practice with them and it won’t be a problem.

I don’t know why the specs listed here for the Razor Slim earmuffs say “individual volume controls”, there is only one on/off/volume control. These muffs utilize a single volume control which controls left and right volume simultaneously.

I just tested the Quad Razor Slim earmuffs, and they appear to be stereophonic. (If you softly rub your finger on the outer case of the right muff, sound is amplified primarily on the right, and the same action with left side produces the same results on the left) That being said, it is difficult to discern from which direction noises are emanating with these muffs.

Same as the other Walker’s electronic earmuffs with only dual microphones. My Howard Leight Impact Sport electronics muffs do a much better job as far as directional noise locating abilities. But they are less comfortable and the on/off/volume knob feels a little bit sketchy and does not operate as smoothly or conveniently as the Walker’s.

I got these to hopefully failproof my earplugs that I got recently to combat my neighbors fan war tactics. The earplugs were too big for my ears so they’d eventually pop out especially during sleep and I’d even end up losing one until I’d make my bed.

I was able to find noise cancelling earmuffs and settled for this pair because of the price. They arrived about a day early and came well packaged. I tried them on and could still hear some noise but WITH my earplugs in – these muffs are just right for surviving fan wars and I look forward to using them together for future loud parties under my bed at 3 am, as well.

The muffs are snug but that’s totally what you want, trust me. They must stay on, right? They survived my tossing and turning in bed but I did have to try not to sleep on my sides because it can become uncomfortable to your ears with pressure over time.

Plus, if I ever go target shooting, I will be prepared! For now, they have a spot reserved on my lamp by my bed just waiting for the opportunity to be used again.

I bought these, the day of a local parade. They fit my 8 month daugthers head perfectly. She didn’t cry once. There was at least 3 high school bands and 2 motorcycle clubs that pass us and she didnt even flinch.

LIFESAVER. I have read the other views about it being too tight. I didn’t have any issues. This is for SIX MONTHS and up, not a new born not a four month old. I wish people would read the directions before they purchase or complain about something.

I’ve had muffs that reduced noise a little more than these do, but that’s because of profile of these Walkers. The comb height of any rifle doesn’t matter with these. The thinness of the lower half allows you to bring the stock in nice and tight without lifting the ear muffs off your ear.

If you’re at an indoor range with a. 30-06,. 308, or 6. 5 CM, and it’s still too loud, put a pair of foam earplugs under them, all will be perfectly quiet then. Well worth the price. Highly recommend.

Pros: Always ready to use while on the range. You can leave the buds in all day and adjust the sound feature to fit the need. Unlike orange foam plugs that you might need to take out, find a pocket, and hope you lose them.

NNR of 31 which is highest I’ve seen in a sleek package like this. Battery life is great. Cool and comfortable, unlike hot sweaty ear muffs. Great for pistols but they seem to get in the way of rifle stocks.

Easy to compress and insert foam buds. Easy to reset them if they are jarred loose. Cons: Rifle stock tends to hit the cord retract button. Very subtle difference between “Universal” “Clear voice” “Boost” and “High frequency boost.

I have been using these as a replacement for my original VXs. I love them, save for the one minute shut off warning. It seems to happen intermittently, with no pattern. I have turned on my podcast just after the warning and had it STILL shut off.

There is no way to adjust this with the useless “app”. I won’t be getting rid of them! They’re great! But that one issue is extraordinarily irritating.

I purchase this product for use at an outdoors public range where I volunteer as a RSO. I was impressed with the specifications, Listing the NRR of 31 !! But when I first tried them at the range, I quickly had to put on my ear muffs over them.

I would rate the NRR closer to 21. The instruction were printed in a #6 font, not very informative. Instruction indicated 4 ‘Listening Modes’ by name only, failed to indicate what they should be used for! Appears to be more of a bluetooth listening device than hearing protection!.

I use these Pro Ears Gold II earmuffs while on the sporting clays course and in the field. While on the clays course they allow me to hear the swing of the trap arm often seconds before the clay is within view.

I can also easily have conversations with my customers without having to pull out an earplug. While in the duck blind these earmuffs allow me to hear the “whoosh” of incoming birds seconds before I could either see or hear them otherwise with just normal hearing.

The sound quality on these are amazing compared to cheaper electronic earmuffs. I will forever shoot with these earmuffs.

Comfortable headphones that allow you to hear conversations, muffle shotgun reports, and keep your ears warm all at the same time! The shape allows use while not interfering with the shotgun mount. They are a bit pricey, but in my opinion worth it.

I guide disabled veteran’s in deer hunts. Over the last week I watched 25 rifles being verified that they were sighted in and sat with 2 Hunter’s while they harvested deer. The ear protection worked perfectly while still allowing me to whisper to the hunters in the blind.

Orvis should offer a optional protective case.

I just got this thing going and I can already see (hear) an improvement. With all of the settings to adjust, I’m sure it’ll take me awhile to adjust it optimally, so I’ll update later. On other websites, some have said that the slotted screw for the AFT adjustment easily strips, and I think that is probably true, it appears to be made of plastic.

Just remember this, it turns very easily, so if you are at the end of adjustment one way or the other, and you keep trying to turn it in the wrong direction, you could strip it. Turn it very gently one way and then the other, and you will see that it turns so easily that there is no need to strip it.

Just trying to help you not have a problem. Other than that everything is very straightforward. I have moderate to severe hearing loss in both ears and this thing is already making a big difference. Hopefully this unit will be good enough that I’ll want to get another.

Have purchasd game ears in the past, (3) drowned one and stepped on another. my bad. For the most part, they are a great item. I’m not fond of the new ear plugs, they don’t fit well. the older style was much better.

Having problem setting the proper tone level as it’s extremely close to match. After spending thousands on a famous brand with questionable results, these are fantastic products. My primary use is for every day hearing aids and also for in the firld use.

They are a great product for the price.

I am still getting used to the Game Ear. Having lost a lot of hearing due to working in a very noisy environment my entire life, I was amazed at what I can hear with one of these. I plan to buy another in the future.

One of the best features is that i blocks ear damaging sounds as well as amplifying the pitches I don’t hear well. The only thing lacking is better instruction on adjusting, fitting and wearing the Game Ear.

I am pleased with my purchase. I purchesed mine after a friend with worse hearing than mine purchsed one and was pleased with the results.

Nice set of glasses, comfortable fit, nice clear yellow lenses. However, the ear muffs are not expandable and barely fit my big head. Not cancellation ability is superb, great for hearing protection, even in an indoor handgun range.

I bought this combo on sale, and they were a good price. The glasses are good as well. The ear muffs, however, apart from their protective capabilities, are not very good at all. Like other reviews state, they are hard to adjust and keep adjusted; also, the plastic is brittle.

If you look carefully at the hinge design, the force of pulling the ear muffs apart to place them on your head naturally puts strain on the part of the hinge that is made of very thin plastic. These broke during their first time out on the range.

With an improved hinge design, this would be a great affordable set.

These are great headphones for the casual shooter (of which I am) as well as doing yard work. They fit snugly on my head and work quite well even while wearing glasses. I bought two pairs of these for when I and friends go out and do some shooting.

Honestly for cheap simple hearing protection these cannot be beat. The earplugs when used with the earmuffs are great for anything in the intermediate cartridge to rifle cartridge range. The safety glasses are the only thing that I have a problem with, they are not very comfortable and at least one pair I got has sharp edges on the news piece (that’s why only four-star).

Altogether for the casual user this is a fantastic buy.

Love the around the neck design. Great fit, less bulky, doesn’t get in the way when wearing a hat and glasses on the range. I’ve even used them to workout in a pinch. Bluetooth is a great addition!

My partner absolutely loves these – he can listen to his music whilst using heavy machinery. the sound quality is excellent and they block external noise very well. the bluetooth telephone optins has been really great – his customers sometimes moan at him using his phone to speak to other clients while he’s working at their property, Now he can do both, and the customers don’t even realise! These arrived quickly and were simple to set up.

Heavier than normal muffs but still comfortable, good battery life and a decent bluetooth range. The sound quality is ok, not the best for bass, and they are no where near loud enough. They work well with strimmers and mowers or workshop tools like drills and bench saws etc, they do cut out a lot of the tool noise but they just aren’t loud enough for use with stump grinders, chippers or cabless machines like dumpers which is a shame.

Good quality. Tiny criticism is the volume. Could do with being a bit louder but really not a problem

Bought for our four month old baby. Recommended age was minimum six months so we expected these to be loose. They are super tight. I have a fair bit of experience with ear protection and I didn’t even want to put these on the baby.

I don’t think he would be at all comfortable. Although I’m sure they wouldn’t have fallen off. We took the foam out and put them in an older pair that my kid ripped the foam Out of. If I wasn’t in a bind I would have returned them instead.

Worth every penny and some. I was sceptical of the performance of these active noise cancelling headphones, due to their (comparatively) low price. But was hugely impressed after my first outing. They were still comfortable after 5 hours of continuous use, all of which I was able to hear my father talking at normal volumes some 30-40 yards away.

They had some interference from wind, but considering the 30mph steady breeze, and 40-50mph gusts, that is to be expected and was by no means a hindrance or even annoyance. With the ambient amplification up a few notches, I was able to hear a woodcock get up some 50 yards behind me, a blackbird land on a fence no less than 75 yards to my left, and every misstep the old man took through the heather.

The neckband is more flexible than I had thought it would be, making it very comfortable to the point of not feeling it there after long. But the whole assembly feel very sturdy and well made. Couldn’t recommend them highly enough, will be buying for my partner shortly.

As a sufferer of Meniers Disease, any help in hearing during a hobby I will never give up. Hunting is a great honor and pastime all over the US. The ability to hear details can make or break a great hunting experiance.

These are a wonderful technical enhancement for my situation. They worked flawlessly for ove five hours on my first trip. Great features, lightweight and not cumbersome at all. They worked wonderfully when a shot was fired and dropped the DB level down perfectly.

I wore them several days, charging them at night and had great results. Work great if your a shooter, and even during the rap session after the hunt back at camp. I would not hesitate to offer them to anyone!.

I have tinnitus, this makes speech hard to hear. I got this because it looked like a perfect device for the range and while doing activities. The good: it works very well. After becoming adapted to the backround noises, the ability to hear voices, even spoken softly, is quite remarkable.

The good: Bluetooth works perfectly. The bad: I have not yet found how to shut off the “connection lost” beep. The bad: As expected, the earpieces suck! Every review complains about them, and they are right.

I will be getting custom earmolds which should fix this. The bad: As expected, battery life at high gain with bluetooth is 8-9 hours. I may buy a second set and swap in the evening. If the USB connector were on the outside of the shell and the unit would operate while charging, the issue would be resolved.

All in all, not a bad desin, maybe the next version will be all good. Dae 8{).

I searched for earmuffs for days before deciding on this pair. These were more expensive than most I looked at, but I thought the comfort would be well worth it. Leather cups etc. but I was wrong. They look very nice, but inside earmuff is light foam and that’s it.

Then you have the very very tight seal from the cups to provide noise reduction. They hurt, first of all. I don’t have a large head, I am female. Second, I could still hear my dog crunching her food in the next room! For studying in an apartment these were not good.

there great you are protected with these muffs you cannot hardly here the rifle or shotgun. I take to the range quit a bit. besides i like the skulls on it. oh yes it works good with my pistols. next week iam trap and skeet shooting.

I needed new earmuffs so decided to give these a try. Have not had a chance to use them on the range yet, but am happy with the look and feel of these new earmuffs. I like having the camo pattern blended with some pink to give it just a bit of the feminine touch.

And the padded headband provides comfort. Earmuffs go firmly over my ears for a snug fit.

I bought these for my son for hunting. I love that he can still hear me while protecting his hearing. They work great, amplify quiet sounds so he can hear better, but silence the gun shots. The only downside is that when it’s super windy the wind overrides all other sounds.

If they cut out wind they’d be 5 stars. I definitely recommend buying them, especially considered the great price!.

I bought these on sale and tested them at the range the other day and I must say I really like them. I was reading some reviews online about the fact the sound is not directional or that you can ear your feet and all other sounds and although the fact its not directional is true, this didn’t detract from the product in the environment I was using it (shooting range with friends).

It was great to have them and be able to ear them talk while I was setting up or reloading or even when I was shooting and they were behind me explaining to a new guy. On the fact you can hear yourself walk etc, you can adjust the volume of the headphones with the nob, so yes you CAN ear your footsteps or leaves on the ground if you want and put them really loud, but turning it down a bit makes its totally good and don’t see why people were complaining about this at all as its easy to adjust.

I liked the fact that even with these on, I could be reloading and doing prep while the shooting range person in the other range beside me (we were on close proximity pistol ranges with separator walls) was shooting and I wasn’t startled all the time if someone was starting a high caliber round shot etc even if my red was not “live” itself and his range was.

if you enjoy shooting or hunting and being able to ear anything while still cutting out the high power sounds, those are excellent. if you can get them on sale, you won’t regret your purchase but I will admit at full price, then you start to look at similar priced competitors and then I’m not sure my decision would have been the same, but I don’t regret buying them at all and would recommend them to anyone.

I ordered these primarily for the hearing protection while hunting and not for any enhancement capabilities. I took them out on a muzzleloader hunt yesterday and they definitely reduce the sound from a shot.

So they do what I need them to do, but why I bought them is because of the advertised feature of sound enhancement and that is why I rated them the way I did. The sound enhancement feature works well; when they were working correctly.

I could hear a lot that normally I would not have been able to hear. A deer walking 50 – 60 yards away is easily heard, the same with a bird rustling in the leaves at 30 yards, etc. The problem I found was that the enhancement was frequently interrupted with various types of interference.

I would not call it “white noise”, it is not something that sat in the background that you eventually get used to because it is all the same frequency. These sounds are high and low frequency, loud and soft, and random so they are very distracting.

The only way I found to correct this was to turn the volume very low, which then took away the sound enhancement feature. The other issue I had was that it seemed much more difficult to determine where a sound was coming from than normal.

I am going to keep these. To me, they are more comfortable to wear than earplugs. I normally hunt with a bow, but when I do hunt with a firearm, I always wear hearing protection so I am not losing anything by using these, but I am not gaining anything either.

I did not shoot with these ear muffs, so I can’t attest to their sound reduction quality. The microphones do not provide any ability to tell where sounds are coming from. It’s comparable to listening to the television with headphones on.

The sound is digitally reproduced in a way that give it a “tinny” sound. I gave the muffs a 2 star rating on the assumption that the sound reduction is good. They are slim, well fitting, & appear to be well made.

I bought these Quad muffs and the attachable walkie as a combo. My fault that I missed this item DOES NOT have the audio input jack. This feature would have enabled me to give a 5 star rating. Now to make sure I get the correct one since the outside packaging on the walkie talkie states “designed to integrate onto the Razor muff”.

But inside it specifically mentions the Razor Slim.

The Walker Razor Quad Slim Profile electronic muffs are comfortable to wear and have great audio sound. Upon firing, the muffs perfectly block out the loud bang! I would recommend this product to anyone that wants awesome hearing protection.

On a motorbike, these are what I was looking for. For the EP5 plugs, I forget they’re there. They do a great job hushing the wind noise. Below 100km/h, wind is barely a whisper. Higher than that, the wind can be heard, but it’s not loud.

I can hear music from the helmet’s speakers far better too by turning up the volume a bit. For the geeks, it’s hugely improved signal to noise. All with volume that doesn’t hurt the ears. The way the EP5 sit in the ears, once they’re in, they stay put.

Very comfy. Do the job. When these wear out, I’ll be getting them again and again. Tried the cheap roll up foam plugs. After a couple of hours they get very uncomfortable. I have small ears, and with the foam always wanting to expand, the pressure can get distracting over time, almost painful.

Tried the silicon plugs from a chemist. They also did a great job, but they only come in 1 size, I have small ears, so again, uncomfortable. Then there’s taking off a helmet, the plugs get pressed further into the ear by the movement.

Awful.

This is my second set – my first lasted around 4 months of weekly use before they fell apart but for that use over time I felt was acceptable. They do a great job at blocking noise – can be used on their own if other range users are shooting rimfire – I use them in conjunction with quality electronic ear muffs for center fire.

I don’t need to remove them on cease fires – just pop out the small insert to converse with other shooters – when shooting commences just pop the insert back in & away you go. Don’t make the mistake of removing them fully with the insert in as the vacuum will really make it painful- overall they are a good improvement on foam inserts & are a good companion piece with electronic ear mufffs.

A definite must if you are older like me & trying to preserve what hearing I have left. A good habit to get into whilst young – yes I fully recommend these.

SureFire EP3 Sonic Defenders are super comfortable and very easy to use. I use these when I ride on my motorcycle. I keep the filters open for ambient sound while blocking out the harmful sounds. Works like a magic.

These are also my primary hearing protection at the shooting range. I absolutely love these American made earplugs!.

On the tractor supply website these are described as Bluetooth. They are not. I double checked the website, these are still advertising these as Bluetooth. Walker’s website shows that these aren’t Bluetooth.

These earplugs are pretty good at noise reduction and if you sleep on your back. I bought these to rest peacefully in my home that has a recording studio so things get pretty loud. The earplugs stick way too far out of your ear canals making it impossible to lay on your sides.

Unless you have super deep ear canals, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend these. Decent product but not at all useful for what I need them for.

I have tried too many different earplugs without finding the ones that will fit my ear AND work. Im done with my search. These are the best and they are amazing. They block out the noise extremely well.

I love the small carrying case with the keychain so I can always find them without digging through my bag! Thank you!.

These in ear plugs seal really well, and offer a considerable amount of dB protection. They deaden sound more that the disposable foam in ear plugs. Perfect for going under your over the ear, or use them by themselves.

I have used them during a bullseye shoot at an indoor range and they did great. I was really impressed with these.

I’m a Walker fan when it comes to protective headset, so purchasing this product was a no brainer for me when it came out. I have 4 other pairs of walker headset and this was my 5th purchase. The sound is excellent and can come close to high end headset such as Ops Score AMP (which I owned a pair).

The fitting is perfect on my ear and it’s felt comfortable with the gel cup. The headband doesn’t head up and keep your head relative cool in hot weather condition. Overall, it’s a brilliant product, however, there a few things that can be tweak.

The active dynamic sound suppression system work~ish. The reason for that is while it’s great reducing the sound when a loud decibel is detected, at the same time it’s make it impossible to have a conversation with someone if the active dynamic sound suppression system suppressor the sound during a conversation.

I can’t say it rugged enough around high producing decibel such as M777A2 155mm medium towed howitzer because one round from the howitzer made the left ear cup full of static and it remain that way. There are time where I turn the device on and it’s gone but for the most part the static is still there.

Today when I was using the Bluetooth, I noticed the button has retracted into the device. My guess is being around high producing decibel long enough and it will shake this headphone apart resulting in the recessed Bluetooth button.

Although the device doesn’t work anymore, I still wear it because it’s comfortable. I just wish it was more durable.

Excellent ear protection at the range! Slim design, Comfortable to wear all day with the gel pads, also has a cooling headband for hot weather. Worth the few extra dollars compared to the standard version.

You will enjoy your day at the gun range, with this on. Especially if you upgrading from ear plugs.

Found these muffs to be superior to my old Caldwell’s and Peltor’s, both had electronic noise reduction as well. These are as comfortable as any I have used, much nicer materials for the headband as well.

These are of a proper professional use quality.

Perfect for any loud workshop environment. I purchased these as I was sick of the foam plugs constantly falling out. They do a fantastic job of reducing noise and are such a comfortable fit. With foam plugs, on the past i have had to wear ear defenders, but now these plugs do the job completely.

Bought these for clay shooting using a 12 gauge shotgun. Even with the stoppers pushed in they don’t reduce the report enough for my liking. I did buy medium and large sizes not knowing how they would fit and the medium are o.

k for my largish ears. Conversation is audible, so they maybe more suited to a noisy workplace.

Great ear defenders , I used to use the headphone protectors but I found they got in the way of resting my cheek on the gun. These small defenders are great they fit themselves perfectly the ear. When they are fitted they block out all sound.

A must have for a clay shooter.
