20 Best Futon Mattress For Sleeping (2023 Updated)

It got a little smooshed in shipping but works just fine! I can lay it on the floor and yes it’s pretty firm, your hips and back might not thank you in the morning. I’m 180 pounds, and I don’t sink straight down to the floor.

I could sleep on this pretty comfortably for a weekend. Warning to tall/big people, it’s plenty long and wide enough for my short body, but I imagine 6 foot tall sleepers or folks who are heavier than me might find this uncomfortably small and not supportive enough.

Was perfect for what we needed! Had a friend move in with me unexpectedly and he was sleeping on the floor for a while. I saw an ad for this bed and it was honestly a steal. He finds it very comfortable and it’s much better than sleeping on sleeping bags.

I did think it was going to be wider but that ended up not being a problem ).

This mattress is definitely not 4 inches! It’s more like 2 and the thickness is uneven throughout. It’s convenient that It folds and has handles. but overall this mattress is not what it claims to be, it’s not very dense either.

I wouldn’t recommend for the price.

Finding a cheaper alternative for a spare room bed, this was the perfect choice! I absolutely love this futon because of the color and the frame, and it also fits nicely in the room which includes exercise equipment.

The frame was easy to put together. The mattress is a great fit and sleeps comfortably too. There is a half recline position that is excellent for napping!!

Very nice futon for sure but assembly required. Disappointed mattress firm did not disclose that.

BEWARE OF FALSE ADVERTISING!! We thought this would be a great purchase, however, are extremely disappointed in this futon mattress. First of all, we don’t see the point in the zipper which would enable you to remove the very thin fabric for cleaning purposes because what is inside – what they call a mattress – is just some sort of filler that would literally fall apart if you took it out of the cover.

We were shocked at what we saw. Unfortunately for us, we did not get into our new home until after the return period was over so never unpacked it until now. With that, we decided we would just keep it and spend another $100 plus for a true zippered futon mattress cover to protect this thing from falling apart.

After finding a cover we liked on-line, we needed to enter the the futon mattress thickness in inches for the proper fit – they range from 6,8,10,12 + inches. As we prepared to place our order for a cover that would fit a 10″ mattress, we thought we better measure the Blazing Needles product to be certain it is indeed 10 inches as the ad states.

We were not surprised to find it MEASURES ONLY EIGHT INCHES!! Complete deception and utter disappointment. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT AND ARE VERY DISPLEASED WE ARE NOW STUCK WITH IT NOT TO MENTION OUT $130 PLUS THE COST OF ANOTHER COVER.

I love the color. It is truly a beautiful color, like a bright pink azalea flower. However, I didn’t realize the futon mattress would be as thin as it is. I am going to try to figure out a way to make it plusher.

The shipping and packaging were excellent, arrived early and packed well. I would recommend this only for a very slim adult.

The futon material smells like pot and has no bulk to it. It slides off when in the upright position. This particular product is nasty. I had to make my own way to keep it in place. I’ve had futons before and this one does not measure up.

Easy to move upstairs because it was vacuum packed but not as Nice as my last one. Cover this rally thing and there is a lot of fluff inside making it appear more comfortable than it is but it will due.

There were also two apple-size soil marks on it but thankfully they came out after scrubbing them with soap and water. I was not happy it came soiled!.

I thought 8 inches would be thick enough but it is quite flimsy and uncomfortable. There are ugly white threads throughout, not shown in photo, so even though I love the color I have to keep a cover on it.

The material is very scratchy. Not happy with this product.

We bought this futon mattress to use as a couch in October , 2. 5 months later we had to buy a new mattress to replace this one. This mattress says it is 8 in thick, it is not comfortable. We slept on it for 1-2 nights and both did not sleep well.

As a futon mattress it’s fine it served its function for a month or 2 but for the price we paid for it, it was a rip off. Very disappointed. Highly recommend for a dog bed. Do not recommend this be bought to be used to for a couch futon if you do not want to have to replace it acouple months later.

The portion of the order that has arrived, the mattresses, look fine, or so the recipient has told me. BEWARE. The items were ordered on 1/3, the mattresses delivered on 1/9, however, the frames are nowhere to be seen.

A shipping label has been created for fed-ex on 1/6, 11 days ago, but that is as far as it has gotten. Horribly disappointed. Walmart tells me to contact the manufacturer, the manufacturer tells me to contact Walmart.

Which is it?? What is the recipient supposed to do with just the mattresses. I suppose the kids sleeping on the mattresses on a concrete floor is better than them sleeping actually on the concrete floor.

Walmart does a pretty good job of getting the little item purchases where they belong, however i am highly skeptical at this point of ordering ever again a big ticket item like these futons were from walmart again.

I will update IF they ever arrive, or what walmart does to make it right.

Great! Easy to put together! Wal*Mart has sales on these, mine was under $300 and that’s a steal for this! Matress itself is better than a few $200 mattresses I’ve seen and looked for elsewhere. This futon comes with a nice, firm but comfortable mattress! It’s a spring mattress so should hold up and not go flat like a lot of the foam futon mattresses out there Frame seems durable and looks like it would last a very long time.

The majority of the frame is metal aside from the sides. As others have said, it’s hard, but not impossible to turn from bed to couch with the mattress on and only one person. This has nothing to do with the futon mechanism, as it is actually very durable and smooth! It’s just the nature of how heavy the mattress is.

Something to keep in mind if you live alone, in a small studio and expect to convert this everyday. It might not be the futon for you. For my use, our two bedroom apartment, the second bedroom is my office/family room.

When we don’t want to hangout in our nice living room and dirty it up, we are in the spare bedroom. This futon allows this bedroom to be our family room but also allows us to convert it to a bedroom if needed.

We have had this mattress for almost 2 months now. It has already compressed quite a bit and it feels like you’re sleeping on the equivalent of a camping pad. We bought the straw Tatami mats that are supposed to go under the futon as well.

The Tatami mat comes in four separate sections, so immediately there is a ridge in the middle of your mattress, due to the Tatami mat seams underneath. The ridge in the middle is the ENTIRE REASON we were getting a new bed to begin with (our old mattress had developed a ridge, and we wanted to get rid of that).

The Futon itself is made of nice materials, but it compresses a huge amount and you feel like you’re sleeping on about a 1 1/2 inch mattress on top of rock hard straw pads that have a ridge in the middle.

Needless to say, we are highly disappointed and shopping for another new mattress. This was a big investment for us ($1,100 for the mattress, tatami pads and shipping costs), and we are unable to return any of the product.

I am a side sleeper and my husband sleeps on his back and neither of us have been able to wake up without back pain. We have even tried a 2 inch foam mattress pad to place on top, but the ridge remains and it is still quite hard/uncomfortable.

Do not invest.

When we received the bed we were so excited! And half the bed is lovely! BUT, only half! I dont understand how they could make such a huge mistake! The bed is apparently hand made, I expected better quality! And for the price.

! So extremely disappointed! We thought the lump might be from having the bed rolled up in the box it came in. so we gave it a couple months but it never went down. Its about a foot away from the edge of the bed and about a foot wide and runs the entire length of the bed, head to toe! So basically 2 feet of the bed is unusable! It is terribly uncomfortable to sleep on this lump and you wake up with back pains! I tried contacting the company about this issue as well and nobody got back to me! Horrible customer service! I thought about getting more of these beds but after this experience, Im scared to get a bad bed and bad service! Hope I can find another Japanese futon company that delivers in the USA.

Absolutely terrible. I don’t leave reviews for products, but I feel the need to tell people to not buy this mattress. I’ve never slept on such an uncomfortable mattress before. If I could, I’d return this thing in a heartbeat.

Ive tried sleeping on it twice, and I’m never had such severe back pain the following morning. Sleeping in the woods in more comfortable than this. Absolutely zero back support and a complete waste of money.

I’m very dissatisfied and tossing this thing in a dumpster for a new bed.

This is very nice. We put this in a nightly rental unit we own, so it may get heavy usage. I’m hoping for durability and easy cleaning. It looks good, high quality. I can’t speak to the comfort of sleeping on the futon, but as a couch it’s decent.

This mattress is comfortable and heavy. Like people stated in other reviews it’s more of a peacock blue not navy not mad about it though. Though I haven’t measured and not sure if it’s just not fully poofed up (been open at least 3 days) but doesn’t seem like it’s 8 inches deep.

Every time I sleep on this mattress, I feel the sleep quality is better than on my bed. The soft cushion makes me very comfortable and gives good support to my back. As the cushion for the couch, this mattress is gentle on my back and I spend many refreshing hours sitting on it.

The fabric upholstery is top-class and I find it easy to spot-clean. My cat approves of this mattress as I always find him on this and we have a competition for our favorite spot on it.

I grew up sleeping on your typical spring mattress, and for some reason have always found futons more comfortable. You know, the ones that are just stuffed with, well whatever regular futon mattresses are stuffed with, no springs or anything, just stuffed.

When it came time to buy my own bed/mattress, I figured it would be expensive. I’m the type of person to do my internet research and find exactly what I want based on end-user reviews, price and the like.

I found this mattress and decided to take a chance on it, it had decent reviews, was a good price, and I figured the “independently-encased coils” would have that futon comfort I loved but with a bit more sturdiness to it.

I paired it with a wooden frame I found on that other giant online retailer. Best life decision ever. To be fair, I lined the top of this mattress with a blanket I wasn’t using that fit the size almost exactly (full size mattress and the blanket overlaps it by about 6 inches on all sides) and then put the sheet over that so it makes for additional comfort.

But over the course of the last 4 years that I’ve had this setup, I’ve had numerous compliments on how I have the most comfortable bed ever (just friends over and such, stop thinking dirty). Technically I’ve owned two of these mattresses, but I only purchased a second one because I was moving to a different state and could only bring what I could fit into my car.

This being a mattress, it was easier to just sell the old one and buy a new one, having it delivered to the store nearest my new residence. So with the chance to start fresh and buy a different mattress, the fact that I specifically went back and repurchased the exact same one should say something.

tl;dr: good price, very comfortable, great buy.

I bought this and had it delivered to my son’s apartment before we arrived. He just moved in and doesn’t have a bed yet. It worked great as a topper to an air mattress but it is definitely pricy. I expected it to be much thicker for the price I paid.

To me it was worth no more than $80. It was more of a topper to me. My son used it after we left as his bed and he said it worked fine for him. He’s still young and is only 23 years old. Maybe more appropriate for younger folks.

This has been perfect for our RV dinette converted bed. We put this over the foam cushion. It is the right size for the odd space. Comes with washable cover, no issues. Left it out a week in the RV to decompress and air out.

Husband loves it. Also purchased Full XL size sheets we found elsewhere to fit.

Firm and soft at the same time. Feels like the thickness will not flatten out too much over time. The larger size doubles up easily for smaller children. I have placed this in my 5 year old’s tent because he insists on sleeping in his tent.

It was nice and clean. Opened the package and leave the mattress unused for two days. There is minor smell but it was expected and not too bad. After that, put it to use and everything is good so far.

This arrived very fast (under 1 week) and is a dream living room mattress come true. I was searching for *months* for a unique, stylish, modern 2nd guest bed that I could put into my living room. We cosleep with our 8mo and needed a former mattress for when we visit my mom’s house. I found this masters online and after reading the reviews ordered it. When it arrived my mom was shocked by how thin it was and swore it was stuffed with paper.

When I arrived, I was surprised it had buttons (the ones I had tried in the store did not). I was nervous the first night using it. However, all of sleep surprisingly well and deep. Despite the erratic nature of baby sleep, I woke up feeling rested after finding I was sleeping way more deeply than I did at home.

I also have RA and often wake up stiff and sore, but haven’t had any issues the last two weeks. You have to make sure to rotate it regularly, but otherwise this is probably the best mattress I’ve slept on.

We plan on buying another one to replace the one we have at home.

This is my second purchase from the Futon Shop. My son has an all wool mattress that he refers to as his “cloud bed”. I agree- it’s pretty comfortable. It was time to replace our 15 year old individual pocketed coil mattress.

I wanted something eco-friendly and ordered this. If you’re used to a standard mattress, this will feel *very* firm. I sleep on camp cots and mats, so it’s not like I’ve never slept on a non-standard surface.

Also, I wonder if it’s because of the 2inches of latex, but the wool is not very well distributed in this mattress and it has high and low spots. (I get it, it’s a handmade product) We’ve flipped and patted it, but it’s so heavy that we haven’t quite gotten it worked out so that the surface is consistent.

So far we’ve had some bad nights sleep. We’re hoping that we’ll get used to it eventually. Long story short: if you’re transitioning from a standard mattress to a futon mattress, get a soft one. Three stars because it’s well sewn and natural materials, but minus two for the lumps and sloping side.

I’ve got allergies and mild asthma, and I have been suffering with morning chest congestion for years. And after many trials and tribulations this past year I’ve finally figured out that it was because of my mattresses.

Bought this for my daughter’s room. I purchased the full size as a decorative topper for her full size bed. When she has friends stay over, it’s a nice hack for a spare bed on the floor, then back up on the bed to store in plain sight.

The colors are soft, yet vibrant, and it’s thicker than I expected. Very happy with my purchase!.

Very pleased with this product. Although the matress seems thin, it is very firm. As mentioned in one of the reviews that prompted me to give it a try, the storage bag that it came in ripped as I was pulling the matress out for the first time.

I haven’t tryed folding it away into the “carrying” bag yet. All in all, I’m pleased with this item, given the price.

We are going to use this pretty thing for tent camping. It doesn’t seem like it’s really going to be 4” thick, but that’s (probably) okay for us. It’s very conveniently packaged; ours doesn’t have any kind of smell.

Took delivery on an Eastern King Size mattress about a month or so ago. It’s been pretty comfortable and is just as good as we hoped it would be. We waited a couple of years to get it. my wife has a low tolerance to voc’s.

What are these good reviews? It doesn’t sit well on our futon at all, which makes me think it’s going to end up being really flimsy. I can’t tell how comfortable it is yet because we can’t sit on it because of THE SMELL.

Where was this stored? It smells like dirty feet, armpit, and mildew. There’s a zipper, so I thought oh thank God, I can wash the cover, but NOPE, because you unzip it and it’s just foam chunks ready to spill out.

What’s the purpose of the zipper then? This is a piece of garbage. I don’t think there’s any way this smell is ever going to air out. It’s currently in my basement and I can smell it from the top of the stairs in our kitchen.

I expected this to be great because it’s a Serta, but it’s a literal piece of garbage. Don’t waste your money.

CONS: 1. 48 hours later still not 8″ as described. I have measured it’s still 6″. I continue to lift and drop to fluff i also stood up on its side to fluff. Then i flipped it over as well. 2. Previous review said firm and great for those who have back problems.

Since this is my full time bed It is not as firm as I expected but perhaps is because my weight. I am 180lbs. I believe it would fill firmer to someone who weighed less. 3. Priced as a 8″ but not worth $169.

4. Had to remove mattress to fold up my old slide and lock wooden futon frame with mattress on it. I believe its because of the weight of mattress. PROS: 1. An excellent buy at the rollback price $80.

The best deal ever. So im keeping it. 2. Firmer than the 8-Independently-Encased-Coil-Premium-Futon-Mattress which i bought first at $128. (That mattress was perfect with its plush soft feel as a sofa, but too soft for me as a full time mattress) 3.

Once folded frame and matress into sitting position, a great a firm comfortable feel. (If you want a plush soft sofa feel buy the one mentioned in #3). 4. Once the mattress fluffs out it slightly hides the white stitching and is not as dominant as it first looked.

I would recommend this as a great guest room mattress and for kids playroom and naps. This is great in the role of full time sofa. I would not recommend this as an everynight mattress unless you dont have back problems and you weigh less that 160lbs My daughter thinks it feels fine however She loved the one mentioned in #3 but shes also weighs 100lbs.

This is a Great futon! I think it may even be over 8 inches. I bought it for my sons bunk bed thinking it would probably only expand to 5-6 inches but no, it is THICK. Makes it a little tricky for our use as we don’t want to break the mechanism in his bed but otherwise we are extremely satisfied.

I’ve considered sleeping on it it’s super comfortable. Great purchase well worth what we paid.
