20 Best Freshwater Fish For Eating (2023 Updated)

I bought this jar of treats for my two painted turtles. They love them and take them right from my hand. But the best part is that this jar came in good condition. In other words , not a lot of wasted dust in the bottom to pick through.

These are fairly large shrimp so maybe not perfect for a tiny turtle. But of course is suppose they could be broken in to pieces if need be.

My two adult red eared sliders go ballistic when they see the container! They rush over to beg, fighting to be nearest and splashing so much water that I’ve started transferring whatever I’m feeding them to a plain plastic container to avoid some of the frenzy.

I know, I’m a spoilsport. This stuff is messy. It’s difficult to feed without getting shrimp powder and debris in the tank, and, in each of the several times I’ve purchased it, there’s been lots of powder at the bottom of the container (about a quarter cup, once).

I’m not taking away a star because I don’t see how it can be avoided. The shrimp are dry, the bottle moves around, bits are going to break or rub off. They’re the potato chips of the aquatic world. I keep a strainer with my supplies, and use it to separate out most of the debris before feeding.

So far, I’ve just been adding it to my compost pile, but I’d love to hear about a better use. Even with the waste, these shrimp are a very good deal.

This is a subjective review. I have Convict cichlids and usually feed them Tetra Min Plus Tropical Flakes (Regular or Color Enhancing) and Marineland Color Enhancing Tropical Flakes. Lately I have been unable to find the latter so I decided to try the Aqueon Flakes.

They are nearly dust. No flake was larger than 2 X 3 mm and those were only 1% of the “flakes”. 90% of the food is dust. I’m sure this is fine for fry, but it simply clouds the water and ends up in the filters.

I will not purchase this brand and type in the future.

I was looking for a food that would sink and this is labelled “slow sinking. ” What they meant to say is “floating – will not sink at all ever. ” As an aquarium supply company, Aqueon knows that some fish only feed at the top, some only in the middle, and some only on the bottom.

They know how important it is for the food to be at the right level for the fish. They just don’t label their products so that we can make educated consumer decisions. If your fish eat from the top of the tank, this food will work for them.

My middle and bottom feeders won’t eat it because it won’t sink.

Ok, so when I bought this and fed it to my fish there were a few problems. First off, the “slow-sinking” part of the granules is just not that great. It takes probably about 2 hours for the granules to sink unless you squish them for a minute underwater but I’m not gonna do that for all of my fish.

Second, my fish can’t eat them, the granules are just kind of too big. They’re about 2 mm in diameter and my fish try to eat them, but they just spit them out after a failed attempt. I will list my fish in a few minutes now just hold on :3.

It seems like a genuinely nice type of food, but my fish just don’t eat them, so just consider this before buying. Finally, the fish I have in my 20 gallon is 2 female bettas, 2 glofish tetras, 2 rummynose tetras, 1 Julli Cory Catfish, 1 Panda Cory Catfish, 1 Platy, and 1 Rubberlip Pleco.

None of my fish can eat these Granules but if it is a problem with my fish, then I think they may just be too small of fish. So if you have maybe larger fish than these, this food may work for you. And it wouldn’t hurt to try them yourself, they are not terrible granules and the brand is a good brand in general anyways.

Purchased Ocean Nutrition Cichlid Vegi Flakes 5kg as i needed some food and my usual flakes were out of stock. I am a breeder of African cichlids with over 50 tanks. After ordering i then read the previous review and thought i made a mistake.

I have been using these flakes for a few weeks now and find them excellent they don’t cloud the water the fish love it are breeding good with great colour worth a try and i will be ordering more as the price is good compared to other brands.

these flakes are great. nice and thick, easy to crumble. my cpds, neons, guppies and harlequin rasboras love em. they go nuts for this stuff. havent seen any color benefits but ive never seen this happen from any food so i dont know.

overall, better then the usual paper thin ones i usually get.

These are great! i like the way they come in small blister packs of 8 gumdrops per sheet. makes it easy to grab a sheet and throw away the empty. my fish love these. they smell it as soon as it hits the water.

especially my clown loaches and demon eartheaters. also, a great price for what you get. just keep them frozen! i feed them every monday. after the long lonely weekend in the office alone, they love some blood worms!.

I’ve been buying this for 4 years now. Recently there’s been a shortage of bloodworms so I always try to stick up when ever I can. This is a great product, the quality has remained consistent all throughout the years.

They float while frozen but will sink once thawed. Color is always bright red when they do, which tells me they’re fresh. I feed this to my fish as well as axolotl.

I bought this recently to feed to my Axolotls. I have 5 at the moment and 1 is a very picky eater. The bloodworms are packaged in blister packs and if you hold it between your hands for a moment or 2 its easier to pop out of the packaging.

My lotls just devour them and have been looking great since I added these to their diet. I definitely recommend for any axolot owner.

Im happy with the product other than the price. It is substantially more expensive than the other products that I was buying. I haven’t seen a significant difference in growth, but i have only been using the AquaMax for a few months.

The Sport Fish 500 is smaller size pellets that are a consistent size that are good for the smaller fish. I bought it to feed mainly bream in my pond.

Absolutely the BEST fish food I have ever used for my pond fish. The 41% protein from fish meal even gets the bass excited to eat! They never showed any interest in the feed with 32% protein derived from plant sources that I have used for years, including that sold by TSC.

The bluegills and channel catfish would eat that food, but they devour the Aquamax 500 with gusto. This is the only feed I will buy from now on. It is well worth the added cost as I know the fish are healthier and will grow larger faster.

If you want to grow big blue gill, hybrid striped bass, or any other carnivorous pond fish that will accept pellets then this feed is hard to beat. You simply cannot grow gamefish as large or as fast on a grain based feed.

Grain based feed is fine for catfish, tilapia, koi/carp. Fish meal is what gamefish need.

My Oscar is a very picky eater but loves these! Great supplement for his pellet diet.

Freeze dried is handier than frozen. Fish love it, and if you leave it out all night, it’s still good

Purchased this to give my fish an occasional change of pace. They love it!

Most of my fish love it. I have 25 fish total, 5 Common Goldfish, 2 Comet Goldfish, 1 Shubunkin Goldfish, 1 Bristlenose Plecostomus, 2 Guppies, 2 Betta Fish, 1 Baby Betta, 3 Guppy Fry, 6 Fathead Minnows, and 2 Feeder Goldfish (not all together).

The Goldfish love it, the Guppies like it for the most part, the Minnows love it, but the Betta Fish are very picky. My Blue Veiltail Female, named Bluestar, seems to like it. However, my Red Veiltail Male used to ignore it.

I was forced to keep him in the evil Petco cup for a week until I could get him a bigger tank. I got him a 4 gallon, and he was very stressed and depressed. I then was forced to stick him in a 1 gallon, and he’s opened up quite a bit! I think he is one of the rare personalities of Betta who prefer small spaces.

Anyway, this product is great overall. They are a perfect size for small fish, since big fish may lose it. If you have fish fry, this is perfect for them! They are so easy to crush (the bloodworms, not the fry) into a fine powder for my Guppy and Betta fry.

Overall, I highly recommend this product, especially for such a great price!.

I bought this for my betta and guppy fish. They both love it. Great as a treat or to add some variety to their diet. The store employee said they didn’t have any freeze dried blood worms, but I happened to check and they had more than two brands on the shelves! A little weird.

I’m glad I found these though because its a great price, and my fish love it.

My betta fish went nuts every time I fed him these! He loved them. Best treat around! Diffenitally recommend it for your betta fish!

I wrote a review previously on ND puppy food and the longest time it was the only food we got for our pup. My pup has a sensitive stomach and he had diarrhea from almost everything so we couldn’t give him treats or snacks.

About a month or so ago he stopped eating his ND kibble. We had to mix it with wet food in order for him to eat it and when we finished the bag I bought him a small bag of taste of wild hoping he would start eating again but he didn’t.

So we decided to try this brand. The kibbles are squishy and not as hard as the ND or taste of wild kibbles. To my surprise he started eating this food immediately after a month of barely eating. And the even though months leading up to this food he had diarreah almost every single poop after we started feeding him this food his poops immediately became normal!!! I’m so grateful that he got better and I’m happy this food works for him!!.

A very reliable product from Tetra, I have used this a few years now, it stays in its stick shape all the time and doesnt break up or dissolve in the water.

Kept my fish fed for 7 days with no water quality issues or furry remains when I returned. Only use the bare minimum though.

My pond fish like Tetra Sticks better than any other fish food I’ve tried. And I’ve tried several. They like that it floats on the top and they can swim up and get it. The stuff that floats down immediately gets lost in the pond and they can’t find it.

And of the foods that float on top, they come for this as soon as we toss it. They spit out the other stuff and get very angry when we tried it. Chewy has the best price for Tetra Sticks.

This has been a big help in my battle with ich courtesy of my local fish shop. My loaches that I’ve had for years were very stressed and looked awful and really weren’t eating. So I’ve been soaking their food in this and putting the drops directly into the tank and I feel we’ve crossed the road into recovery.

They may not have started eating without this plus I believe it helped heal the spots the ich caused to their tender scale-less bodies.

I bought this hoping it would do the same as fresh garlic without the hard work of crushing and squeezing the garlic cloves but so far, I do not see it working. For the price they asking I thought it was pure garlic juice but it is more of a purée.

This is something you can do with a blender and a strainer at a fraction of the cost. Even in the supermarket they sell garlic paste that only contains citric acid as a preservative as this Kent product does.

The tabs I have been using for a long time always clouded the water for several hours after feeding. API wafers don’t do that and the fish love them. The two Plecos I have are several years old now and they are thriving on these wafers.

My long-fin chocolate plecos spawned and the fry were having trouble finding food, but not with these wafers. The moment I drop them in the tank the young plecos are on them. Same is true of the adult plecos and my Chinese algae eaters.

I use this to feed my ropefish, goldfish (5 in), and koi (8 in). The worms are usually decent length and I rarely ever find any imperfections/non worms in the container. Usually there’s a decent mix of whole pieces and partial, which is good if you’re feeding smaller fish.

Pros: – Quality control – Fish seem to enjoy them – Pieces are usually decent length – Can get a large container and save money Cons: – Worms don’t soak water so they’ll never sink (not recommended for bottom feeders) – They can get stuck up above the waterline and mold because they’re light.

This product is My Betta’s ABSOLUTE FAVORITE!! When I first brought Him home from the store , The worker at Petco Recommended me the Pellets. But My Betta fish willl not eat those what’s so ever !! He tries them (Pellets) but just spits them Back out, Leaving them to Pollute the water.

I was worried about him not eating at first but I then went Back to Petco and Discovered The Betta Buffet FLAKES !! I Brought them home and was actually Delighted too see how My Betta fish could not get enough of them !! Not to mention The Positive effects it has on His color.

One more thing I learned while Reading online and Researching Betta fish is the Flakes are Way healthier than Pellet food / products because the Pellets expand in their very little bellies causing them to be bloated and sometimes Horrible Constipation problems.

I also dont notice it causing any pollution/ Nasty algae and Dirtiness on the water.

This is the only fish food that works well for both my betta and guppies. and I’ve tried a variety of them. They love it. My betta isn’t a surface feeder. She likes to bottom feed, and these are perfect.

The guppies eat it on the way down while she eats it off the bottom. And because they are little pellets, they get cleaned up instead of landing in the filter.

My goldies can’t get enough! It’s super easy and convenient feeding. I just rotate through the varieties and give them a cube each day to supplement their regular pellets. The result is fat, happy, healthy goldfish!.

Several of the bloodworm cubes contained white fuzzy substance and about 30% actual bloodworms. The white substance appears to have held the cubes together and broke apart in the tank. The fish had to pick at it in order to get to the bloodworms, but could not actually eat the substance.

This is my first and last time trying this brand.

I have a mixed tank of tangs, pygmy angels, a sweetlips, clowns, cardinal, damsels and fire fish along with LPS corals. Several months ago, My LFS guy said I should give this and the Calanus a try as he was very pleased with the results.

So I did and I am very happy with the product. I feed a cube of this in the morning and then one at night with the Calanus. I love the fact that the shrimp looks very fresh and the fish absolutely devour it.

I believe there color is brighter, and have noticed a slight increase in their size as well, especially the sweetlips. There is no cloudiness associated and there is less waste because the pieces are whole.

The LPS also become very active with the Calanus and there color and grow rate has improved since I stopped using cyclops. I docked one star because it is expensive. I buy the twin pack for $27. Highly recommend.

For some reason, they now write nutritional analysis for the dry product (mysis without ice) when all other manufacturers write it for the product as it is – mysis in ice. There is no way of knowing how much dry weight is there in the cube, so the analysis results make no sense.

Even though the food is good, I think they deserve a 3 star review for the practice of hiding data.

My LARGE seahorses will eat only PE Piscine Mysis Shrimp. They are large shrimp.

Package clearly states that filets are “individually wrapped”. That’s not true. “Individual” means 1, but there are multiple filets frozen together in a single shrink wrap. That makes it difficult to the and separate the “individual” filets.

I guess that a money saving thing but it degrades the value of the overall product. IMO.

We’re a family of 4 with two young boys. My kids LOVE this fish. I’m not a huge fan of fish in general (I know – Florida’s fresh fish is wasted in me), but I almost always finish off my portion, too.

I was surprised to read reviews about it being both “tasteless” and “too fishy”. We toss a little Old Bay on ours, put some butter in with it and either broil it or pan fry it quickly, so we have dinner ready from freezer to plate in the same amount of time it takes to make some rice.

Sometimes we go crazy and put a couple of thin slices of lemon on top while it is cooking. The portions are very thin, but I see that as a good thing – we don’t waste food because we’re eating all of it, and I don’t have to worry about the middle being raw when the edges are cooked.

We have this fish for dinner at least once a week and even my super picky three year old is excited about it, no matter how often I put this on the table. I’d absolutely recommend it! (Regarding reviewers concerned about Chinese processing of Alaskan fish: China is closer to Alaska than Florida is! I don’t love that part, but it certainly makes sense that some of the mega processing ships would come from there.

Complete waste of money. The package has 2 pieces per wrapping and when they defrost, they are complete mush. The only thing it is good for now is pet food. So frustrated. And now the website won’t allow me to upload the 3 pictures to confirm my purchase and results.

I got sent a box of 12 of these to trial & review. I have 16 cats who’re mostly on dry food, but Sunday morning is wet food treat time, so everyone was in the kitchen this morning. The pouches are easy enough to open but an absolute pain to get the product out! You end up wasting quite a lot which is stuck inside the pouch, shaking violently to try to get the food out & flicking it pretty much everywhere, or getting your hands messy if you squash the pouches to get as much out as possible.

The food itself looked & smelled quite tasty, similar to the filling of a Greggs steak bake, & obviously there was much feline shouting as I dished up. They were quite happy to tuck in when I put their dishes down on the floor.

Considering that the box of 12 pouches was shared between 16 cats, not all of it was eaten straight away – most of the bowls were mostly empty but there was little / no interest in clearing every trace away.

The pole cat will probably finish any scraps if she comes in today if the cats haven’t already (she’s wild, comes & goes as she pleases via the cat flap). The Furry Collective are generally not fussy eaters, and I tend to feed pouches with jelly as they slide out cleanly & there is little / no waste or mess.

I’d be more inclined to buy the tasty shreds if they were in jelly rather than gravy. Was unable to upload any photos as the facility seems to be faulty.

I received this product for free to test in exchange for my honest review. My cat, Cocoa, is a fussy cat who is full of personality and is usually such a picky eater who is resistant to any change in her routine.

Saying this, I was shocked to see how well she responded to this wet food. She seems to really have enjoyed the taste of all of the varieties, especially the tuna and salmon varieties which I expected as she loves seafood flavours in her food.

Even the beef, which we usually don’t buy for her as a flavour, she enjoyed and finished off. I definitely would recommend this for the excellent variety meaning your cat won’t ever get bored and for the delicious taste which my fussy cat has thoroughly enjoyed.

I will definitely continue to buy this wet food selection for Cocoa due to the high quality of the product and the excellent health benefits it brings.

My 9 month old kitten Wednesday is a fussy eater and will often leave food she doesn’t like. She will also “go off” brands and varieties that she previously enjoyed at the drop of a hat! However she seems to be enjoying Felix.

She always licks the jelly off first, but will then go back and eat the meaty pieces afterwards. Empty bowls all round. The only slight negatives for me (her) is that she tends to prefer meat to the fish varieties and my local supermarkets tend to only sell the mixed meat and fish selections, and the plastic and foil pouches the food comes in isn’t recycled around here at least.

That said the cardboard box can be recycled so at least one part of it is more sustainable. This food is also much better value than some other brands, and usually there is an offer on somewhere so I can save a few pennies which is great during these times of rising prices.
