20 Best Ford Diesel Scan Tool (2023 Updated)

This code reader is for older (pre-1996) fords that use OBD1 ECMs. It works great and it is a great deal for the price. I actually bought this for a friend, I have older professional OBD1 scan tools that have a more detailed display, but once you read the manual on this code reader it has all of the important functionality of the more expensive code readers.

Anyone working on older Ford vehicles should have one in their tool box.

It wasn’t real clear that it needed two AA batteries so I thought it didn’t work. Gotta read the instructions sometimes. If you don’t push in the clutch you’ll get a fault code that directs you towards the AC clutch.

This device is much easier than shorting the ecc to read the flashing codes. New to Ford obdI, so this was a must have for me.

not like OBD2, this OBD1 is a pain in the hinnies to use. Need to follow the instructions very carefully or else you would get bogus results. Even with the code that I received sometime I wonder, if it is accurate.

Again it is, computer in its infancy and Ford? need I say more?.

The check engine light on our 2003 VW Beetle (74,000 miles) was coming on every so often. The light was diagnosed at several car parts stores as caused by the “Emissions System. ” One time the gas cap wasn’t on right.

The catalytic converter was the likely culprit, but for its age and infrequency of driving we decided it was better to let the “problem” stay and have the store erase the check engine light. Vehicle performance has been great.

The last time I went to a store (Not Auto Zone) to have the light erased I was told it was “illegal” to do so. That drove me to purchase my own anaylzer and do it myself. That has worked out just fine with no hassle.

I’d always have to run to the local autozone to have a check engine light checked which is great to have that service but say if my car wasn’t able to make it to a store I’d be stuck not knowing what I’d need to fix.

This device has made my life a lot easier and has saved me time and gas money by just being able to click it in and see what’s going on. I especially like the blue tooth option which sends the diagnostic readings straight to my phone and translates the code right then and there.

This may not have all the bells and whistles but for someone just starting out fixing cars this is a game changer!.

It told me exactly where the problem was. Unfortunately the cars computer doesn’t know when there’s no compression on a cylinder so my engine was toast. Only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars was because I bought the middle of the line product and not the best one I could.

But I was able to clear the code in my girlfriend’s car. I would definitely recommend.

got the privilege of trying this awesome unit, and for free at that can you imagine ?! I’ve been playing with this for a couple of days now, and the good outweighs the bad (or disappointing). I’ll give it four stars for now; most of the disappointing things can be easily fixed.

First the negative: 1) I really wanted to read fuel rail pressure in real time on my Dodge 2004 Ram 2500 and when I called tech support before I bought the unit I was told it would read this; unfortunately this reader WILL NOT read fuel rail pressure on that truck.

This is the second one that wouldn’t read FRP (Blue Driver won’t read it either). 2) Nice reports – they are sent to my cell phone but there is no way to print them. Should be an easy fix; I spoke with Tech Support and they said they’ll add it as a feature request.

3) Live data can be viewed as numbers or a graph, but it will only show two graphs at a time. i suggested they either enable Bluetooth direct to something like Torque or make their own app. It’d be nice to be able to show live data in gauge format.

Now the positive: 1) It cleared faults AND logged preliminary faults, meaning everything. None of the Bluetooth/app scanners do this as far as I can determine, meaning they don’t do it for my Dodge diesel.

2) Decodes OBD2 fault codes. Yeah I know I can look them up but seeing it in real time is easier. 3) The reports are nice; I can always read them on my cell phone. 4) Tech support is knowledgeable and except for one glitch about fuel rail pressure they have responded to my calls.

5) Unlike the 2004 Dodge it reads all sensors from my 2009 Dodge 1500 Hemi. Lotta useful information from these. I recommend this reader as a good entry level OBD2 reader. It should be adequate for the needs of most home mechanics.

I decided to try the Fix Assist to see if it could diagnose the same issues similar, more expensive devices do. Not a bulky unit, fitting nicely in my hand, and it provided all the information I needed.

The Bluetooth connected without issue, and the longer cord is great for moving about while hooked up. I was impressed not just with the detailed information given, but also how easy it was to read on the screen – clear and a decent size! Very user friendly, and I had no issues connecting to a number of vehicles.

Free updates are a huge bonus as well for keeping this device current. Plan to recommend to friends, but not let them borrow mine! Turned out to be more useful than I expected!.

WoW! Was stranded in a remote area for weeks , truck didn’t enough power to go up hill in my drive way. Roads were glare ice couldn’t get a tow truck in. The VSC light & engine light were on causing throttle to be restricted.

My wife picked up the reader and ten minutes later found the problem( burnt fuse ) and drove out like there was never a problem. I am guessing it almost paid for it self first time around. Bravo !.

This product has been great. It syncs up to the onboard computer. I used it on a few cars, mostly American and Japanese cars. No issues in determining the error and clearing any codes. Reads the computer spot on and able to see the status of all the different sensors.

The screen is nice and big and bright so when working in the car can get dark under the dash and in a garage. So having a bright screen and seeing everything is great. Would recommend this to all my mechanic friends if they don’t just borrow mine.

Great for all sorts of vehicles. If you are fixing a lot of vehicles like me. It’s well worth the extra money. Need one that’s versatile and tough for daily use.

I’ve had different code readers and scanners over there years. This one is very feature pack for the price. It was easy to setup and connect to my vehicle. I was able to use it to service brakes on my vehicle and I was able to look at information that I was only able to see with very expensive scanners I’ve used in the past when I was a mechanic.

I love the fact that you have access to the phone app that you can use along with the scanner to look up common fixes for your issue and you can even shop for parts right from the app. I would highly recommend this for the do-it-yourselfer.

It’s also easily updated over wifi. It is a great unit. It gives all you need to do it yourself.

I purchased this item, thinking. hoping, that if I watched enough you tube videos and enough comments and reviews here, that I could use my engineering education to make it work. It is assembled well, the poles are straight and without warp.

The dies of each size are cast well and fit into their respective rubber bands. BUT. Turns out, it ruined two sets of Sealed Power 1404M cam bearings for my Mark IV BBC. After damaging the first bearing, I used the second package of cam bearings to start over.

No matter what, the die segments spread out and make an imprint that damages the face of the bearing whether I installed it tight, or loose onto the die. I went for broke, kept trying to at least install a few for the experience.

We were able to get in 3 out of the 10 bearings that were a usable success. I don’t know if I can return the tool. But now I know to tell others to maybe choose another.

The previous reviews are 1 star because they tried it for one vehicle that didn’t work. If you have TRADITIONAL calipers with brackets that separate from the caliper AND the piston is press-in, this tool is great.

Not all brakes are created equally – just like every other vehicle. There’s a correct tool for the correct job. Any professional will have 3 variations of this tool and DIY’ers should figure out what will work for you 1 single vehicle.

Remember, oil changes aren’t the same on every vehicle and neither is brakes. (Yes, oil changes really require different procedures, tools, and parts on different makes and models, if you were questioning that).

This can be of great assistance when removing or installing a serpentine belt by relieving the spring tension on the belt tensioner. The long piece has a 3/8″ square fitting on the end to use with the included sockets, crows feet, or attaching the segment with the 1/2″ square adapter.

This long piece has the potential for a lot of leverage IF you have the space to take advantage of it. My Dad’s vehicle does not due to various hoses and pipes getting in the way from both the top and the bottom of the engine compartment.

My suggestions to the manufacturer is: First make the long handle shorter (with an add-on extension) for tighter spaces. Second, include shallower sockets. It is a nice tool for the price and may work well for many different vehicles (I believe the 1/2″ square would work on the belt tensioner of my Grand Caravan).

Unfortunately, it did not work on my Dad’s vehicle. I think a long-handled 13mm wrench would have worked better in this instance. Again, this is a nice tool at a good price. However, first check your belt tensioner to see if you have the clearance to actually use this.

Omg omg. I have a Nissan Pathfinder 2008 piece of crap must been built on a Monday after everyone went out partying on Sunday night watching a football game when this series of vehicles went through the inspection line.

Needless to say this product helps you in so many different ways I don’t know if I can say it here or not I’ll just put it to you this way I just passed my second admissions test being able to turn off my engine light.

And other codes I don’t want to say but it’s on your machine. For the investment I made. I say several thousand dollars that mechanics wanted to fix on my truck. It’s still running just fine periodically I just have to turn off the codes when I fill up the tank.

I was sick and tired of bringing it back to Nissan after the warranty wore out and getting charged three hundred bucks a pop on computer boards Etc. This product is a game changer if you need for the purposes I’ve listed above.

But it’s very useful as well to let you know if your gas cap is bad it does give you codes to tell you where to look first instead of having a mechanic try to screw you. At least you’ll go in with some knowledge of knowing what’s wrong with the vehicle it’s kind of cool when you’re talking to someone here who knew absolutely nothing about engines lights ignitions codes and what it all meant.

I was very lucky mine is nothing serious it was just a bad board that’s computer board that no one’s been able to fixed in all these years. This product save me like I said before several thousand dollars at least would I configure so far.

There are approx. 11 emission diagnostics the auto computer monitors each time you turn the car on and while it’s in use. Some are monitored, now and then, and some are monitored each time you use the car.

When these 11 diagnostics are all good the auto computer codes them as “complete” in which case you will pass your emission test. If you have a check engine light (when taking the car in for the test) the emissions people will not test your car; this holds up the process of registering your auto.

SO, NOW WHAT DO YOU DO! In my case, I disconnected the battery for 5 minutes & this reset the ck. engine light BUT also erased the history of all the codes that set the “completed” diagnostics to “not completed”.

So, now you take your car to the test station and the test comes back as rejected, not failed but rejected. WHY! Because you erased all the data stored in the computer when you disconnected the battery.

If I would have owned the Pocketscan Plus in the beginning I could have read the code that caused the ck. engine light in the first place and fixed it. By the way, the problem was a loose gas cap. Also, because I erased the codes along with the computer history, a new history had to be built within the computer so that the diagnostics would reset the 11 items to “complete” so that I would pass emissions.

This history building can only be done by driving the car in what is known as a “DRIVE CYCLE” (Drive cycles for various autos can be found on Utube). The Pocketscan Plus was connected and in real time I was able to read each test result until they all read complete, then I drove right to the test station and passed the test.

Without the Pocketscan Plus I wouldn’t have known which items were complete. In the beginning of all this, the guy at the emission station said just drive it and keep coming back until you pass or we can drive it for you for $350.

As a mechanic, I always recommend people buy one of these because EVERY make and EVERY model of vehicle can have a malfunction. With this reader you’re not spending hundreds of dollars on a tool you will rarely use, but you have peace of mind that if a light comes on you can see what the problem is and what it needs BEFORE going to a shop.

You can simply plug in the device and see what it needs, go to Advance and buy the part and then take it to a shop. Then you can tell them EXACTLY what you want done. which will save you HUNDREDS. This reader is so simple.

just put your car in ACC mode (between start and off), plug it in, and then when a code pops up pull out your phone and google the code. Thats it. And probably 50-60% of the time a code pops you don’t actually need to replace a part, sometimes it’s as simple as cleaning a filter or tightening your gas cap.

Most readers this price don’t read ABS codes, but this one does which is a big plus. I keep this reader in the glove box of my truck for if I have a light come on, and it’s come in handy. We have a reader at the shop that cost over $2,000; and while this reader can’t do all it can do it will tell you what the issue is which is all you really need.

So whether you have a small shop you fix a few cars a week in or you’re just a DIY car owner this reader will save you time and money. The one and only thing I don’t like about this reader is the display doesn’t illuminate so in the dark you’ll need a light to see.

Which again is no big deal, who doesn’t have a flashlight?.

Walmart is showing an out of date model 3160. I received the latest model 3160d, it has the latest software installed, USB cable to use with computer and a couple more menu keys. There is no CD included nor is it needed with this model.

It will record 100 frames of data, about 13 minutes worth. You can download their program and when you plug into your computer you can read your data 4 sensors at a time with a colorful graph chart, the downside is that it only shows 8 seconds of data, the rest of the data can be displayed 4 sensors of your choice at a time with columns of numeric values.

When viewing a sensor fault it will show you 4 seconds before and 4 seconds after the MIL was triggered on the colored chart. I was under the impression it would show all the data on that colored easier to read chart and disappointed that it didn’t.

On the screen of the tool you can access all of the data in a list or on a graph but only one graph at a time. Overall the tool works great and is easy to use. On their website you can also send the data to them and pay them a fee to interpret it if needed.

Calling their tech support was helpful and didn’t have to wait more than a few minutes. Walmart was easy to order from and it arrived 4 days before it was promised.

Bought this to diagnosis “reduced engine power” and check engine light on my 07 Chevy. A little pricey but overall results made it easier to accept. True plug-n-play product. Installed batteries (included), plugged into vehicle port, turn on ignition and let it read.

Not only did it list my vehicle type and waited for confirmation, but gave possible problems that caused code making it easier to isolate potential problem and repair. Screen and text is also a little larger than other scan tools I have used making it easier for these old eyes to read.

This easy to use OBDII computer has helped me save time and money, thanks to its precise and detailed diagnostic. Last time I used it, my wife’s car had the ABS light on and I was not looking forward to troubleshooting each sensor and the module.

Instead, I simply plugged in the computer and it provided me the code and which sensor ABS sensor was OOS. Ex. Speed Sensor Rear LH side. So I called the store ordered the part, picked it up and fixed the car in no time.

It honestly pays for itself in time, money and effort if you are a DYI kind of person.

During our first trip towing a travel trailer our car suddenly flashed the warning “Transmission Fluid Too Hot”. We had no idea what to do and had no indication that there was a problem prior to the warning light coming on.

We let it cool down and everything turned out fine, but we didn’t want to be in the same situation on the return trip. Enter this monitor. It’s super easy to install and immediately you have a readout of the things that matter most to you.

For us, it was the transmission fluid temperature, and though we were s not obsessed with it throughout the trip, we had the peace of mind of knowing what the exact temperature was and when we might need to pull over and cool down.

I would recommend this to anyone who is towing and needs to be sure they don’t overheat (yes, even with a cooler installed)!.

I’ve had one of these in in my sports car to supplement the dash gauges in 2009. It has worked perfectly for 12 years now and gives lots of information not available through idiot lights. When I bought a new Ford diesel truck I realized that the dashboard display would not show such things as oil life percentage (it only tells you “change oil soon” and “change oil now” with no information on what that means), soot load of the exhaust and more importantly when the regeneration cycle was running.

Since those items are must know for me (the diesel will apparently not run properly when it calculates 0% oil life and the engine efficiency drops when it is regenerating). The x-gauge feature allowed me to set up those gauges as well as a numerical output for the turbo boost rather than the vague dash output.

Also, 4 gauge outputs on the screen at the same time prevents a lot of scrolling. Installation is a snap, one cable pugs into the OBD plug, the other end into a jack on either the side or back of the unit depending on how you want to mount it.

After a fair bit of research, finally went for the Scangauge 2 as a bit more compact than others on the market which made it easier to fit in the console of my 2019 Isuzu D Max, plus had the provision for Auto Transmission temperature as i tow a caravan and want to watch temps.

My purchase arrived very quickly even though was free postage, connection instructions are very easy to understand and having dual position to plug in the lead adds to the adaptability. Setting up the parameters for the AT temperature was really straight forward and easy.

Setting up the fuel usage etc. , was okay, except when filling tank for the first time, it doesn’t allow input of litres just the tank is full, then has a % input which i can’t relate to anything, given it can be + or – %, i have left this at 0%.

Other than that aspect i haven’t found out about yet, i would highly recommend this product especially if you want to get AT temps.

I’m not easily impressed but this product is amazing! It has surpassed my expectations by a long shot. I’ve bought expensive scan tools before that do about the same read/erase codes, show live data and so on but especially for the price on this ELM 327 I wasn’t expecting much out of it and to my surprise this Bluetooth OBDII scanner is just as great as “better” higher end scanners in the $100+ range actually I believe even better for it performs same if not better plus it’s Bluetooth so no more dangerous maneuvers trying to read scanner while driving plus I especially loved how you could customize and add gauges, dials and graphs to monitor or read live sensor data! Thank you I absolutely love it and received faster than expected too even with holidays! Thanks again very happy!.

I have 2 bmws. This device does not connect to my 2004. It does connect to my 2014 but the data is indicates as n/a or is bogus. For instance, the coolant temp is negative 47 Celsius. I live in Florida!!!! Thats impossible! I had such high hopes that this device would provide useful diagnostics.

Perhaps on other vehicles but not on my bmws.

I bought a ds708 several years ago and upgraded to a maxisyselite but I needed an extra scanner for my guys and seen some reviews on the 808 being better than the 708 but I quess it is the ds808 so don’t think this is an upgrade because it has no special functions for hardly anything.

It is a good computer for reading information , reading graphs on engine data , but hardly anything on abs , air bags , etc. ,and for the price I give it 3 stars.

it’s a week before i schedule a DMV inspection for my 06 Cayman S and figure it is a good time to fit my race seat. the seat fits but now the airbag light is on because i removed the seat. i went with iCarsoft because it does everything i need without having to use a laptop.

the device came pre-loaded with the latest software and recognized my car right away. after manually going through the device menu and looking for errors, i found the airbag warning and reset it. turn the car off and on again, the airbag light lit a few times and then turned off.

success. i look forward to using the device after changing the oil and such. great product and FAST shipping :).

Purchased this to allow DIY on Oil Change and Oil service reset as well as SRS, ABS, Brake Caliper Release and Reset. Excellent product with the right software installed. Oil Service Reset allows for Date of reset for accurate countdown to next service.

Comes with instructions however, the tool is easy to figure out and to access the reset functions. This is also a high quality OBD II scanner with live data function and Fault code interpretation to plain language.

Purchased through quickshipautoparts with the latest software already loaded. used the tool for 2012 Porsche Cayenne Base Model V6 oil change and the reset was quick and worked perfectly.

I purchased one for a Porsche Cayenne S and had my friend who is a mechanic to purchase one for a GM truck. They are made of good quality and will read several vehicles. I would recommend this tool to anyone and would not hesitate.

I talked to a guy named Matt who sold me this unit and it did exactly what he said. These units have free upgrade support and are user friendly. Don’t buy the other expensive units because they are over priced.

This tool has saved me 700. 00 in the last two weeks of ownership. And yes it will rest an “Oil Light” on a Porsche Cayenne S.

Being new to me, this device is helpful. There is so much more that this device is capable of than are my mechanical talents. It will take time for me to understand and implement the features of this unit, but in the meantime, it is useful for pointing to specific components that are likely the issue causing the problem.

I bought it mainly to determine why my check engine light would illuminate and to repair or replace the issue causing the problem. After reading the owner’s manual, I can see that this tool has much greater capacity to delve deeper into the mechanical issues of my older, high mileage vehicles.

I’m not under the illusion that this is a magical device that will save me big bucks without much thought and effort going in to the diagnosis, but it does offer great clues and information that at least gives me a starting point from which to search.

It does reset the check engine light and it did help me to get my daughter’s 2006 Chrysler T&C through the emissions requirement in Arizona. I tend to buy and keep my cars and trucks for a very long time.

Lots of things eventually go wrong with these vehicles and without my efforts in my own garage, these cars would have to be scrapped. Between YouTube videos and this device, I can keep my cars moving well beyond the 300,000 mile range without a dealer’s input or a $120+/hour professional mechanic.

With the aforementioned tools, you’ll be amazed at what you can do.

I reviewed this a few days ago and gave it two stars but it never showed up, all of my 5 star reviews however showed up nearly instantly. That’s certainly a hmmmm moment and knocks another star off, maybe I’ll have to post on facebook instead.

Despite this saying it supports TPMS it told me that it didn’t support it for my vehicle when I used it, not exactly helpful since that was my main reason for purchasing. Then it promptly locked up requiring getting that jewelers screwdriver to remove the battery cover and remove the batteries.

I explained this to the clerk when returning and his first response was did I use it, not exactly a good listener apparently. When I replied yes he said I could upgrade to the next model or pay a restocking fee.

I understand the idea behind a restock fee to deter people from buying to use for the moment and returning but apparently doesn’t take into account any negatives experiences you may incur. The next model is way more money than I want to spend for my limited use and no guarantee that it will support my vehicle either.

I took the restock and will buy another model elsewhere. That infamous online retailer has many models to choose from with comparable prices that don’t have a restock fee and has free returns.

I have two vehicles, a 2017 and a 2018 that are getting into the mileage range where things start to go wrong. At my last visit to the dealership I saw them charge a lady $135 labor to scan and clear a trouble code and tell her she needed a new gas cap.

I had a Cent-Tech scanner for about five years and from time to time I’d hook it up just to see that everything was in good order. It saved two friends a service call, one for a leaking gas cap that wouldn’t pass smog which he replaced for about $10 and a neighbor who needed a new exhaust sensor.

Last year when I needed it was out of date for my truck and I discovered they no longer updated it. I threw it out. If you’re old enough to remember this, Sears used to do the same thing with some of their plumbing products and when the customer needed a part that forced them to replace it.

I suspected the worst, but I needed a scanner and this one fit the bill. I’ve only used two brands, Bosch in the industry and Harbor Freight’s at home. I bought this one, but it’s not as user friendly as the one I had and if you buy it I suggest you buy the two year extended warranty that makes it good, if it’s updatable, for 2 years and 90 days.

I was an early adopter to the x431 scanners back in the mid/late 2000s and was thoroughly displeased with the product back then. In addition to over promising access/function, it was bulky, slow, error prone, and just generally a terrible way to spend $3000+ (let alone twice, I had bought a later gen one around 2010 or so as well).

Suffice to say I was extremely hesitant to give them another chance, but given how fast everything-tech has improved over the past 10-15 years, the new lower price point as well as portability of this unit pressured me into trying again.

I must say this is a very different animal than the early units. Obviously the color touchscreen is a huge improvement as is the smaller size, but also the speed is great. If you leave it off when not in use, it takes only about thirty seconds to be ready to work.

Moving between menus is very snappy, with only substantial delays when selecting a different manufacturer (the Bluetooth modules has to reconfigure) or when accessing inherently slow systems of course.

Functionality is better than before, though they still do over-promise things. Don’t expect to program keys on most vehicles even though they claim to. Most will use external (vci based) encryption which makes anything the scan tool clones irrelevant sincethe encryption isn’t there.

A plus side however is that while in the older systems it would just say it was successful regardless (as it just completed the cloned action anyway with no regard for output), ones I have tried out of curiosity have all given some error of sorts indicating it would not be possible to complete our is not fully supported etc.

While a minor thing on its face, this is actually a huge plus in that you don’t spend a ton of time trying to figure out if the problem was the key, an ecu/module, the scan tool or just user error. You know right out of the gate it isn’t going to work so no need trying to over-diagnose the situation.

So far access has been exceptionally thorough, being able to customize bcm/etacs functions on 2020 infiniti models for example with no problem. Even though there are a massive amount of manufacturers from foreign markets, there are still holes in the north american market support.

One would have to go brand by brand, but right off the bat I noticed the is no Nissan Rogue at all it seems, and the entire Hummer brand is also missing (including no listing for those models under Chevrolet or GMC, nor compatible vehicle access like Yukon etc).

So while still very far from ideal or perfection, at the current price point this is reallya no brainier. Very thorough access to many many vehicles at a sub-1k price tag. Even if as a secondary unit, it’s a great addition to the tool box and doesn’t take up much space.

This has all but replaced my 12k Verus if it weren’t for the lack of a lab scope.

I have downloaded all the vehicles updates. You don’t have to do all, but they do stay highlighted in the Update menu. That would be my one gripe is to enable selecting and deselecting what you want to have on the device and have it remain hidden until you select that you want it on from a separate menu.

Also would have been nice to have the ability to add memory from a SD card. But for me the 32 Gig is plenty as even with all the downloading and updating I have plenty of memory. I have used on 5 vehicles so far and it has done well.

I bought to be able to write Vin and reset an immobilizer if needed after a ECM change in a 2004 Toyota, but it turned out to be not needed. I then ran tests on my sons 2016 Toyota Sienna Van and it came up with 3 unknown issues.

So already I like this items ability to see deeper than a standard scanner. The issues shown to us were history items that were no longer an issue, but nice to know about as van was bought used. I like all this item is capable of doing for its price.

The touch screen is large enough even for me at 70 years old and is responsive once you figure out where its sweet spots are for the upper left back arrow. I am getting a screen protector to put on it as I know how dirty us mechanics hands get and figure I better protect it.

Most of the add in connector adapters I will probably never use, but I am glad to have them just in case. It is a little hard getting the Android software to allow you to hook up to a printer other than the one from this company which it wants you to buy.

but I figured out how to download files like I do from my phone or just simply email it to me and print it out on my home printer. If you can afford a bit more money for an item (usually about $150) I would buy the larger scanner X431 V Pro 4.

0 as it is easier to do all the above items I find bad on this one. But for me this is good as I am on a limited budget for my home use.

These things are really awesome. I bought two of these, one for me and one for my brother in law who works on a lot of cars for family and friends. Finally, a tool that includes true bi-directional testing! I will update this review as I get some more experience with this scanner but so far I am very impressed! I am just getting into automotive diagnostics (so keep that in mind when you read my review) and didn’t want to spend $800 – $3600 on a pro scanner.

I am very happy with the capabilities of this scanner. I used it on my 2019 Equinox to test the bidirectional testing and was able to control the console lights and a few other simple and low-risk tests.

It really is incredible to have that capability for such a low price. I would buy this again if I lost it or broke it. Pros: 1. Price (For everything it does it really cant be beat. ) 2. I was able to see data that my cheaper scanner couldn’t do.

3. True bi-directional testing! 4. Downloading the app and setup was very easy. 5. Connecting to the device from Android or IOS was easy too. 6. You get two free software downloads for one year then you have to subscribe.

(For example, I chose GM and that lets me scan my Equinox and Silverado. The same GM software also works with Pontiacs in my extended family so I haven’t needed to use my second download yet). All in all a great tool for anyone that wants more information from their vehicles.

I borrowed an OBD reader from a neigbour to see if any codes were showing on a friend’s car and it could read the codes, but didn’t have live data, nor was it able to reset the change oil light. A week earlier, a lower model of the Innova reader went on sale and I was about to go buy it, but decided not to when I noticed that it also was not able to reset the change oil light.

The 3100 RS model is the lowest version that can reset the oil light, so when it went on sale the following week, I was very happy and rushed to Canadian Tire to buy one. I didn’t really have anything to test, so decided to test my car battery with it.

The test showed I had a bad battery, so I tested my alternator. It tested fine, so I replaced the battery on my car. Not long after that, I watched a YouTube video of a car mechanic that mentioned this very same tester and said it did just as good a job of testing batteries as his $800 battery tester.

That made me feel very good about my purchase because the Innova tester does so much more than just testing the battery, and it cost a lot less too! The mechanic also mentioned that newer cars don’t warn you with slow engine starts (like older cars do) that your battery is about to die.

One day, your car just won’t start! That can leave you stranded and costing you more than this tester. I now think that every car should come with one of these as standard equipment. Since they don’t.

better go and buy one for yourself.

I purchased this tool to help me diagnose both of my vehicles when the check engine light turned on. The tool itself is fantastic and is very intuitive to use. However the associated app for the iPhone/Android is as good as useless, slow, clunky has no real use case and attempts to make recommendations of what will fail in the future for your vehicle.

Another thing to take into account when purchasing this product is the updates on the internet – this tool has a USB on the bottom that can be connected to a windows computer and using Innova’s desktop application can be updated anytime to get the latest vehicle support software.

This is leaps and bounds ahead of other similar products. Outside of the App related issues, this tool is absolutely my go-to.

Looked for OBD2 tester online at CTC site web. Found 3100RS on sale. I read all reviews. They stated nicely connected to Android phone. Went to store. Asked clerk about unit since it showed 3100J on pacjage and same store product code.

Kid says same as advertised since store product codes matched. Tried unit out. Would not pickup my car’s Vin number (Lexus 2003) as well would not connect with phone. Called help desk in Cali. Guy tells me the J model will not connect to phone as is not the RS model.

I tell him CTC sold it to me as RS model. He says I know your not the first! Brought back the unit told CTC about false ad and got my refund.

I just bought this scanner, but I have reviewed its capability with my mechanic. He suggested I purchase a scanner for my high mileage 1999 Suburban, so that I could call him with Diagnostic Code information if I ran into problems on the road.

Just. FYI, the first one I bought would black out the screen when I tried it in the “Live Data Mode”. This mode involves starting the car and reading Real Time information about engine performance. My mechanic had the needed experience to declare something was faulty with the code reader.

Harbor Freight exchanged it without question, since it was only four days old. Testing the replacement in the parking lot confirmed the first code reader had issues. Although initially reluctant to become a Preferred Member, I quickly found it paid for itself in two purchases.

I got $12 off the code reader alone. Thus far, I’m pleased with my purchase; it will provide me valuable information if trouble occurs away from home.

Having been a mechanic for many years (retired now), it was quite a surprise to find this analyzer with so many higher-level features such as real-time run data and snapshots – AND at this price! I was able to accurately diagnose my daughter’s vehicle, which had several codes being presented.

With the ZR8s, I was able to narrow down the true cause of the multiple codes to two of the O2 sensors and an intermittent Throttle Position Sensor. Could not have accomplished this with a basic Code Scanner.

Only reason I didn’t give it a 5-Star Rating is due to the navigation menu not being very intuitive to dig into the different levels for advanced analysis – but with a bit of patience you’ll get there.

If you’re a DIY weekend mechanic, initial level access and code resets is straight forward. Great for both the DIY’s & trained mechanics!!.

My wife’s car threw an ABS DTC code, and the traction control and cross traffic alert warning lights came on. While I already owned the Cen-Tech scan tool, it doesn’t read ABS codes. I’m not a professional mechanic so I didn’t need an expensive tool.

This scan tool fit all the needs I had. It easily identified The left rear abs was the problem, and all I had to do was Figure out if it was the cable or the hub. The thing I really like about this scanner is the Repair Sol2 app.

It links my phone to the scanner and I’m able to download a report with all the info related to the DTC and possible repair solutions. For me at least, this is a really good deal, well worth the cost.

I really don’t think you can go wrong with this purchase.

Ive had this scanner a over year now, great entry level scanner for beginners, however I do highly recommend Autel MS906BT as It has more special functions and its bi-directional. This makes diagnosis much easier because you can test a lot of modules straight from the scanner.

The MX808 is great for an entry level G2 or anyone who has a car that requires a scanner to reset maintenance lights. The mx808 is not bidirectional, however reading the live date is not hard at f you know what youre looking for, as Ive said, Ive had this scanner for over a year, and have used this same Autel scanner for multiple years.

It may be difficult to use for someone who doesnt understand live data, or just not very car savvy. Although it doesnt have bi direction. It does have a lot of special functions I use most every day.

Such as epb, sas, and maintenance resets on Mercedes BMW, and Audi. Never had a problem connecting to any cars, im talking late 90s jaguars, to 2020 toyotas. Scanner is very good and easy to use. Extremely user friendly, I definitely prefer this over my snap on scanner I paid almost $2000 usd for.

Interface is much better on autel. Snap on scanners do come with a diagnostic help guide for most every car. But if youre not a mechanic, or someone who truly understands whattheyre looking at from personal experience this really isnt needed in fact some G2s who dont have enough experience, [or just plain dont care] will use this to diagnose every car they get.

This however does not make you the MAN as Im fixing A techs mistakes with my $500 dollar scanner, while they use their $4-5 thousand dollar scanners just to get the diagnostic wrong because theyre too lazy to check live data and freeze frames, let alone understand the parameters.

All in all the mx808 is a fantastic scanner for the price, and it will definitely make you a better technician, so long as you take the time to truly understand what youre using, and how to use it. This scanner has taken me a long way, I will continue to recommend it to anyone who recently got their 2G, or anyone who works on their own vehicle regularly.

This scanner will save you big bucks if you dont have a personal mechanic who has a quality scanner. Ive used this to reset and relearn immobilizers on Hyundais after replacing the BCM. Supper easy and quick.

Definitely a money maker, why are you still reading this? Buy yourself one right now, you wont regret it. Youll also be the coolest guy in your shop rocking AUTEL. Im telling you ones you use an AUTEL scanner there is no going back.

Best interface And bang for the buck. I would highly recommend the new MS906BT if you want a great quality bi directional scanner without breaking the bank, wish I had bought it off the rip. But the Mx808 has done me so well for so long, I dont think Ill be upgrading anytime soon.

Great product, great price, and great service. Autel for life, dont wast your money on the tool trucks. This is the scanner for you, hurry up and order this bad Mama Jamba, youll be glad you did.

I absolutely love this tool. It was money well spent! It works on both of my German made vehicles with no issues. There is so much you can do to avoid a trip to the “stealership”. You buy this and have a problem, the first time you use it, not only will it save you money, but your precious time.

No waiting for the dealer to call you back and tell you what’s wrong with your car, the answer is literally in the palm of your hand. I’ve programmed a new battery and cleared codes so far. I try to update it every week on Sunday just to keep up with the updates that frequently come out.

First year of updates are free from Autel from the day you register the product. It does majority of the cars sold here in the US and some foreign models as well. The price has gone up since I purchased mine.

You know you need it. Get you one!!!.

First off, you guys had the best price by far. It takes a little while to get used to navigating through the menus but once you use it a few times, things become familiar and easier. It’s a great tool to have if you work on cars a lot.

I would say the only drawback to this tablet is that when it’s hooked up to a vehicle for a long period of time, it will drain the cars battery if the vehicle is not running or if the battery in the vehicle is marginal at best so keep that in mind and have a charger on the vehicle if your gonna have this tablet hooked up for an extended amount of time.

Also, on older vehicles, there are some functions like reprogramming the TPMS that are not available. Other than that it’s a great tool!.

My S. O. ~2004 Ford Focus was getting a ‘check engine’ light turning on. She had taken it to a stealership and they told her it wasn’t worth repairing. Took it to a repair shop and they just reset the error light and said to bring it back if the light came back on, it did but the shop was 300 miles away from my current home.

The car only has 55k on it. So Harbor Freight to the rescue. Ordered the reader online, delivered to my door. Instructions are a little involved and the error codes have a look up table in the instructions to find out what they mean.

My error code came back ‘misfire on cylinder #3’. Popped hood, removed sparkplug, corrosion on the exterior looked like it had gone swimming. Just cleaned up the plug and put it back in, no more problems.

A bit of an editorial comment here. I’ve brought a car into Midas Muffler a while back and was sent away with ‘I won’t put any car on the rack that doesn’t get me at least $600’, prevalent attitude at a lot of shops.

Stealerships just want you to buy a new car.

I tried this on a 2004 Scion xA. (Eng light was on for a misfire. I had fixed the misfire by replacing the ignition coils and needed turn the Eng Light off. ) After connecting it went through its process to find the right protocol.

It cycled through the protocols twice and then signaled a LINK ERROR. I followed the procedures on what to do in this case. No joy. I tried on my 2015 Sonata and 2019 RAM 1500 pickup with the same LINK ERROR results.

My neighbor noticed my struggles and brought over his OBD reader. Worked on the Scion xA right away. I should have guessed that he had one before I went out and got this one. HFT promptly refunded my purchase.

This code reader is a very entry level code reader but for many of the codes that your computer will put out it is adequate most of the time. I read once that somebody said the scan codes are not a magic genie in a bottle and I wholeheartedly agree with that comment.

I have the same scanner in each of my cars because you never know when the computer will put out a flukey code and you can at least see what the code is on the road and maybe even reset it because sometimes just resetting a code will make it never to return.

I highly recommend it for beginners who have interest in the OBD2 scan codes. The OBD2 scan codes are almost 100% universal from around the year 2000. With this product, you need not fear the check engine light coming on on your dashboard, and having to go and spend sometimes $100 or more on getting a diagnostic.

If you’re resourceful on the internet or perhaps have subscribed to a FaceBook forum that is based around the model car that you have using this tool along with the internet and along with YouTube will get you very far in diagnosing a problem if you have the time, the patience, and the interest in doing so.

This product has no batteries, it powers itself from your car’s 12 volt system when you plug it into the OBD2 connector. To me, it is a great item to have for basic OBD2 scan codes.

I needed to find out what my brake codes were so I could get my ABS light turned off. This tester shows on the startup screen that it’s programmed for Mazda/Mitsubishi. I was so happy since it’s the 3rd tester I purchased and none of the others would read the brake codes.

I found 3 other codes that my other testers didn’t pick up on either. And the one I bought at Autozone wouldn’t read actual LIve Data. This one was good for Live Data. ABS. Engine codes, and I think it reads transmission codes also.

Very much worth the money.

This is amazing. I tried a cheap version which came up with a general issue with my car but did not pin point it. This device took me straight to the problem which I fixed in 2 minutes for $0 and saved $900 in quoted repair bill.

Great product\. Was able to read all systems on my Mazda that other scanners couldn’t. Has a color screen that is easy to read. Very good product foe the price.

This was purchased for a 22 year old diesel pusher RV. The stock gauges are sketchy at best. “Install” took two minutes. I selected the four readings I am most interested in while traveling. Really nice to have accurate information.

It did start shutting off sporadically while traveling. I THINK I got that problem worked out by selecting the right settings in “Sleep Event” and “Wake Event” in the advances settings. Just finished a 10 day road trip and was happy I added this.

If the random shutoff is fixed, this is a five star product.

Very simple set up, plug it in and you’re set. There’s a few very simple set up steps, and there’s plenty of options on how you want to see your rig’s performance. I’m using my scan gauge D in our Super C motorhome (freightliner chassis with Cummins 330) after set up and imputing some basic info I quickly knew my instant and average mileage, how many gallons per hour, cost per mile and more.

The display is easy to read with different color options. If I had one complaint, it’s that there are so many options of what info to monitor its hard to decide. Very happy.

We bought this upon recommendation from another motorhome owner for our motorhome. It is what we needed to keep an eye on temperature, gas mileage and other info. The set up was SUPER EASY! It’s small, and we put it on the dash with 2 sided tape.

(included) The only negative thing would be that it’s a little confusing to toggle through to get what you’re looking for. Maybe after we use it a while I’ll get used to it. Overall, happy with the purchase! :).

simple reader, if you need codes (esp while on a road trip some place) this thing will do the trick, but you need to translate the codes which is easily done for the most part via the good ol internet.

I only paid 50 bucks for this thing which is worth the money. As I just got one code fixed (transmission sensor) and before that catalytic converter sensor both which cost me 75bucks to get diagnosed.

This time, I’m using the reader then repairing what I need. I’m not paying 75 bucks just to get a code read. That’s ridiculous.

I made the mistake of spraying an upper engine cleaner spray into my intake manifold and ended up setting multiple trouble codes and having the MIL light (check engine light) permanently turned on along with 3 other dash lights.

The electric power steering light, the low tire pressure light and the traction control light! All on and wouldn’t go off. Yikes! I got this nifty scan tool on sale. Reading some comparison charts etc I knew this would turn off the MIL light but I wasn’t sure if it was advanced enough to turn off the rest of the lights.

It turns out it did turn them all off. After driving my vehicle on the highway and burning up all that engine cleaner my engine began to run normally and the lights never came back on. Problem solved.

The code reader certainly works as intended, but boy, it is not user friendly. You pretty much have to have the detailed user manual handy if you want to make any sense out of all the codes it spits out.

It’s ALL code and no English. Sadly, most non-tech people who buy this gadget will be frustrated and will simply cancel the codes without looking up what they mean. It would be helpful if there was at least a decipherable English language clue as to which part of the system was sending the code.
