20 Best Food To Trap Squirrels (2023 Updated)

We live in an area where people are not as vigilante as we are. If only one of you in an area is ‘taking care of’ ground squirrels, this stays a never ending situation. You get rid of them with this bait for a summer, but they are back in full force the next summer.

We used this last summer and got rid of them. We also got rid of rats, which was a bonus. We lived rodent free for a year, then both the rats and the ground squirrels came back in full force this year.

I want to order another 25 pound bucket, but they are out and the 5 pounder is way too expensive. Will purchase again as soon as it comes back in stock.

I was inundated with ground squirrel rodents this spring/summer 2019 that were tearing up my house apart underneath the main floor. These rodents were digging tunnels under the cement foundation of my home.

This type of squirrel dug holes in most of my potted plants, dug up my newly planted flowers in my backyard to hide filbert shells that were used in potted plants and flowers I had purchased at the nursery.

I have never seen anything like it. They did a whole lot of damage. I now have to have a contractor do an inspection and repair work under my house because of the squirrel damage. In three weeks and following the directions of Kaput Squirrel Bait, I am now squirrel rodent free.

You need to follow the directions and make sure that you place the bait where no child or dog/cat can get to it. Also, make sure to read about California Ground Squirrels so you have a good idea of how they live.

Used all the container of this product! applying daily to squirrels activity and barrows site. But still see a lots of squirrels running around! Not sure how effective it is? all the deposited bait disappeared/ consumed.

We have ordered these nuts for the many squirrels who feed at our bird feeders each day. The nuts are a favorite and we try to ration the amount we set out – otherwise, they would stay and munch all day! Pet Guys has the best price and ships promptly.

I would enthusiastically recommend that people order this product for their squirrel (and bird) visitors.

Los Angeles squirrels don’t like corn and seed mixes. They love mixes with nuts – lots of nuts, which makes Volkman’s mix a special favorite. It’s all we can do to keep the bags in stock for our little band of 4 or 5 daily visitors.

The only problem is availability. Volkman’s was out of stock all over for a while. Thanks to Pet Guys for getting some in.

I bought this for backyard squirrels hoping to keep them away from our bird feeder. This mix is more than half dried corn kernels by volume and our squirrels will not touch the corn. In addition, when I researched a little more I discovered that corn has no nutritional value for squirrels.

And that peanuts and sunflower seeds should only be fed to them very sparingly. So this entire mix is essentially a non-starter for squirrels. I have since ordered some tree nuts (all in the shell) to give the squirrels a purpose in life, and am looking forward to watching them gnaw and bury them.

I’ll give them the peanuts and sunflower seeds from this mix occasionally as a treat until it’s gone, but won’t buy it again. It’s possible that this mix is good for other critters, but probably not for any that I want in my small city backyard.

It’s difficult to review a food one doesn’t personally eat; it is like watching a reality cooking show and trying to judge the food based on look and how others react. But the squirrels I put this out for seem to love it.

As do the chipmunks and blue jays. They all concentrate on the peanuts and sunflower seeds first, then eventually get around to the corn if nothing else excites them. or sometimes the deer stop by and eat the leftover corn.

Best I can say is everything I put out for the critters gets eaten, everyday, even if it is a communal clean-plate effort. The squirrels would probably appreciate some more seeds and nuts, a little less corn, but no complaints have been lodged.

Wagner’s Songbird Supreme Premium Wild Bird Food was a success with the birds. However, I noticed some odd “castings” around the bowl that this food was placed in. The best I can figure is the birds eat so much of Supreme product that they regurgitate a moist wad of this product.

All the “castings” had a similar shape and size. They looked somewhat like a pouch, maybe like a bird stomach? I haven’t spent time researching this but I’ve watched and run a feeding area for a few years so take this for what it is.

I won’t be buying any more but will scatter what I’ve got mixed in with other whole seed just so any bird cannot over indulge. Sweeping up before each scattering is kind of pleasant since I’m retired.

I have Western Grey squirrel species in my area and they are rather particular about what they eat. Some of the contents of your product they turn town, but they do eat most of it. Ground squirrels I feed with your product, however, love it and eat every bit of it.

I’ll be purchasing more of it.

I mix this in with the “nut delight” mix for a little variety, but a lot of this mix is just corn and peanut shells, so I don’t use it as the primary mix. Squirrels don’t even eat the corn, usually. Not when better stuff is available (particularly the nuts in the other mix).

They love the peanuts, though.

Love keeping my kitty entertained as she watches the squirrels and chipmunks feast from the terrace door. Does not leave the residue that other foods with corn leave.

I have tried all the top quality bird seed and Coles is the best. I have a stunning array of birds at my feeders when I feed Coles Suet Nutberry Blend, fewer with other top brands. There is no mess or hulls, so easy to clean the feeder.

I also use the red pepper coated, and my many squirrels do not bother the feeder. The Nutberry feeder must be squirrel proof! It is worth the extra cost if you love wild birds.

This is such great birdseed. The best part is the squirrels don’t like it but the birds love it. We get quite a variety of birds from finches, wrens, cardinals, blue jays, bluebirds, Baltimore Orioles, doves.

they all love It! When I first started using this birdseed it took the birds about a week before they started to warm up to it. Now they can’t get enough of this spicy deliciousness. Another good thing about this birdseed is there are no shells.

No shells, no mess!.

No peanuts! If you have a child in your house or garden that has a peanut allergy, this is the bird seed to use for your feeder. It is high quality , large variety of seeds, but no peanuts. My grandson is highly allergic to peanuts, so even one stray peanut on the ground could put him into anaphylactic shock and probably kill him.

So it is important that even when he plays outside, there are no peanuts anywhere. And besides all of this – the birds here in SW Wisconsin just love the mixture! The price here is about twice what my local garden center sells this 5-pound bag for.

So shop around. (There is a peanut warning on the bag, as the mixture is processed in a facility that processes peanuts, so I don’t let my grandson fill the feeder or handle the mixture).

This thing works! I had a troupe of Arizona ground squirrels making a royal mess of my yard — nibbling plants, taking a single bite out of each tomato and zucchini, and digging, digging, digging holes large and small everywhere.

Anyway, the first morning I put it out, baited with a couple of peanuts and sunflower seeds, I’d caught two before finishing my first cup of coffee. I had intended to drown them in the basin, then chickened out and drove them a couple of miles away.

Second morning, same thing: two caught within an hour, then relocated. Third morning, I caught one, steeled myself, and sent it to a watery grave. It took no more than 15 seconds to succumb. I put the sodden carcass out where scavengers could find it.

Fourth day, identical to Day 3. This thing is fabulous. Whether you intend to drown or relocate, be sure to spend a couple 3xtra bucks for the optional basin. You’ll want it to keep your prey from soiling the car as you drive them to their new home.

And of course you’ll need it for underwater demolitions too.

Have had this trap for two weeks. Haven’t set it every day. Yet every day I set it, one squirrel gets caught in it. We are overwhelmed by an infestation of squirrels in my quiet suburb. The Best I have found is taking a small cardboard Square and putting a dab of peanut butter on it.

But the key is to offset the bait away from the two doors. Slightly out of reach. I watched two squirrels sneakily whisk away bait that was in the center. Fascinating to watch them with this trap. They are smart enough to know not to go in, yet greedy enough that they commit to entering when all else has failed.

Desposing of them can be humane or lethal. The basin is very flimsy when filled with water and I can see dumping the water to be an issue with integrity. I would like to drill a hole on the bottom and add a drain plug for future use, since it’s not an if but when this plastic basin breaks on me.

The cage has already withstood a excited Golden retriever who caused the trapped squirrel to die of a heart attack, when I didnt realize one was in there until it was too late. Very solid design. All around its well worth the price and results.

So far we have caught several of the non-native tree squirrels, one at a time. I didn’t expect to catch multiple squirrels at once so that’s fine. The tub is deep enough to drown them quickly, but there is so little room that it’s kind of creepy knowing that the squirrels are trying to get out with only about 1/2 inch water between their noses and the air above.

Fortunately they quickly go into torpor. You also have to fill the tub on completely level ground or it will be too shallow on one side, even on a slight incline. I had it shipped to store so it wouldn’t be damaged but the box was still really beat up, obviously smashed, torn, and opened on one end.

I might as well have had it shipped to home and saved a long drive to the store. When we fill it with water there is a fast leak at the corner where the box was most severely damaged and the water draws down pretty quickly.

So far no response from Tractor Supply on my reported damage. If it hadn’t been damaged I would give it a higher rating. The store should never give a customer a product in such a badly damaged box. They didn’t give me a receipt either.

So good rating on the product, bad rating on the store.

Not only is it a great value, my backyard critters are very healthy looking! My squirrels are ready for winter months with plenty of stored fat, and the stellar jays pack in the food as well. I feed them every day, but in colder months they get an extra amount.

This is really nice food and lot’s of it. Not just peanuts like some brands. This has some but lots of other nuts and seeds that the squirrels enjoy. This feed is also good for the birds. I recommend this feed for anyone who likes to feed their critters.

Ive had 2 squirrel buster feeders for a few years and they have been successful until recently when a flock of parakeets moved in. They are able to grip onto the sides of the feeders wire mesh and help themselves to the seeds.

They also split a lot and so attracted pigeons to the ground below the feeder. We were at a loss at how to stop the parakeets. This new feeder has smooth clear sides so the parakeets have nothing to grip.

However they can still manage to balance on the perches and the sides of the opening if they can fly into position. Thankfully they need a clear flight path to do that. We have positioned the new feeder under a Wisteria bush so there is no way the parakeets can fly into the necessary position.

I cannot express how wonderful it is to foil them at last.

I purchased this basically to keep squirrels from stealing the seed and damaging my bird feeders. Was costing me a fortune. Although I think VERY EXPENSIVE,. It has worked, done the job it was bought for and will pay for itself in the long run.

NO MORE squirrels, quite funny to watch them try and get on it but they not been back. No bigger birds either, I have mostly robins and blue tits. It is very solid and quite heavy, only difficulty I had was getting top off to fill but practice.

Mine has been out over a week now and not had to refill as yet. That is a big plus for me. I have tried many others and found this the best. I would reccommend it apart rom the cost but it is well made.

excellent design and quality manufacturing ,Works perfectly We now have puzzled pidgeons !! rattled rodents !! stymied squirrels !! And a very pleasant and interesting view from the patio window. The feeder is very robust and therefore quite heavy compared to wire cages.

I had to reinforce the free standing feeder pole [Ten minutes with cable ties and a bit of pipe] Job Done!!.

The burrow is located under my neighbor’s shed right next to the property line. They told me that had exterminated them but as soon as the neighbors left for the summer, the littles buggers started up again.

I place the bait station up against the wrought iron fence on the property line. No bait was consumed. I moved the station a few inches from burrow entrance and I think some bait was consumed but very little.

Then I dipped the bait in Jif peanut butter and then I had to replenish the bait daily. All the bait disappeared, both the dipped and undipped pellets. It has been 3 or 4 days since PB was introduced so I do not have an absolute answer yet, but I am optimistic we are rid of the monsters.

It’s labeled “Ground Squirrel Bait. ” One would think it’d be the perfect product to get rid of these disease-infested vermin. The problem is, they won’t eat it. I even tried coating the bait with peanut butter, and even that hasn’t gotten them to consume the bait.

I’m not sure of the efficacy of the 1st-generation blood-thinner chemical used. I’ve heard squirrels have developed a tolerance to it, but there’s been no chance to validate that, as they won’t eat it.

I’ve had to resort to tedious mechanical methods of eradication.

I set up 3 bait stations on an acre & half property and only one 4 lb. application. I have not seen any evidence of ground squirrels. I had an area infested by their tunneling compromising my foundation.

I have since bought more and will do another application for safe measure. Thanks, this is great stuff!.

I love this deluxe squirrel food for “my” squirrels in my yard. They eat the little extras before the pellets but I know when they eat the pellets, and they do, they are getting a fully nutritious food.

My reason for ordering this food was concern for the squirrels not getting enough calcium from the foods available to them in the environment. Lack of calcium causes MBD (metabolic bone disease) and now I know they will get the calcium they need to live longer and healthier lives.

I would like to see their numbers increase here. It will be wonderful and nutritious for the chipmunks too, once they come out of hibernation. -Kathleen J. E.

Late bunch of babies (4) were born last month in the rafters of the porch. They were kind of small and not very energetic. I’ve had squirrels all my life off and on. They looked like munchkins. adorable!!!! It wasn’t long before 2 passed away, they fell off the porch.

They were very thin, I knew they looked like they needed calcium. I bought that and some squirrel food. 2 weeks later and what a difference has been made! They are so cute running all over. Thank you for helping me save the 2 kids.

We feed Squirrel Diet to our 2, 8 month old, female grays. This is a good feed to have in the bowl at all times. The kibble isn’t real popular at first but as they get older more of it disappears. You can add extra nuts to make the bag go further.

We also feed a variety of treats at playtime. Fresh water is always available. Our pet birds, outdoor bird and squirrel feeders enjoy it added to their mix too! No waste either. The 10lb bag and the additional bag of nuts lasts quite awhile.

It is mostly just corn. There are a few peanuts and sunflower seeds that the wildlife pick out quickly, but it is mostly corn. There are deer, foxes, raccoons etc. around my house, and nothing is eating the corn.

Note that the picture of the mix is inaccurate compared to what I received. Mine has much less of the other ingredients and more corn.

Sadly, I live in the city and the squirrels and sparrows did not like this mix at all. I even tried to break up the corn kernels so the sparrows could eat them, but they were not interested. I now have this whole 20lb bag of pet food which I don’t know what to do with.

I’m sure other people who live in the country perhaps get better results.

Like everything price has gone up and a lot fewer peanuts and sunflowers in the mix. Trying to stock up some for our little critters as our nut trees didn’t produce due to very hot weather. I’m making some homemade critter food to supplement.

There are lots of squirrels and a number of chipmunks in the yard. My fur babies (both kitties and dogs) watch them bouncing around all the time. For some strange reason it never occurred to me that I could have helped them.

After all, bird food has been an item in my auto ship so it’s only fair to add one for squirrels too. This brand is a big hit in the squirrel society! They detected the goodie as soon as it’s placed outside and had been helping themselves since.

I am here to order the second bag by adding it to my auto ship and want to give credit where it’s due. Feels good to know that the squirrels can save some time searching for food to fend off the cold New York winter weather.

I live downtown & walk to work every day. I was surprised to find so many Squirrels along the way in such an urban area. They all seem to act & think I should be providing treats. They made me feel guilty that I didn’t.

So I saw the critters food while shopping on Chewy. Thought I’d give it a try & see if my furry friends would like it. Needless to say it was a huge hit. Being downtown I can’t imagine they have much of a food source.

Other than handouts from pedestrians. Will be able to continue feeding my little buddies since Chewy prices are so reasonable.

Well, I’m not a squirrel so I don’t know if I’m qualified to review this item, but being unqualified never stopped me from doing anything before so here goes. The squirrels fiend for this stuff. Every time I get a bag from UPS I see them, hiding in the trees, drooling and plotting how to wrest the bag from my hands.

I know they’re watching me because I can hear their hungry chatter, or are they trying to figure out how to get ahold of my credit card, amazon login and an internet capable squirrel phone? Guessing it’s just chatter, but who knows, these squirrels know what they want, and what they want is inside this bag of critter chow.

I have a couple of feeders that I try and keep full of this stuff, but it’s hard, they really love it and after a day or two they work through it all. They start with the peanuts, then move on to the corn kernels and finally I see them sifting through the sunflower seeds with their cute little hands.

This stuff really works in Southern California (coastal to be exact). I had 2 full grown squirrels tearing up my plants and grass a year ago and then dug a tunnel going under a block wall to the hillside where they lived.

Then came the babies. 5 or 6 of them. They did what the parents did in damage so I bought a bag of this stuff which they devoured in record time. So I bought another bag thinking that would be enough.

No. Bought a 3rd bag, with $11 shipping each time, and no more squirrels half way through the third bag. Now I have another family doing the same damage one year later so this time I’ll buy the 2 bags and hope that plus the half bag from last year will take care of them.

I hate doing this but either they move in or I move out.

It worked well. I think Mr. Squirrel is dead. I am happy that squirrel is not coming to eat my nice vegetables! Super good. It works so well. No squirrels coming here. People who are worried about squirrels should buy this.

Squirrel is dead in like one week. We bought many thing to protect our vegetables but only THIS worked. NO SQUIRRELS COMING HERE.

Works great! Our property was being over run with ground squirrels. The squirrels feast on your fruit and your flowers. I’ve seen them even dig up our flower bulbs. After about a week no more squirrels! It’s well worth the money! Give it time to work.

Used to be better. Lots of large pieces. Now, it is 90% pumpkin seeds. Between the fact that it costs $2 more every time I go on this site, and the $7. 99 shipping and handling, the cost is outrageous.

The little wild squirrels that eat out of my hand (most of them) must be spoiled from the walnuts, pecans, almonds, apple slices, and occasionally the Henry’s Healthy Blocks that I feed them. I’m sure your product is very nutritious, but they didn’t accept it, except for some of the nuts, and they did eat the pumpkin seeds and tried the corn.

They didn’t recognize the rest of it (like the insect protein) as food- and mostly just looked at me like WTF? I think they tried to eat the Blocks, then dropped them. The mix doesn’t really smell very good either, so probably not very appealing or appetizing to them.

This is a great product for squirrels. The only failure is the rodent blocks. As with another review, the squirrels do not eat the rodent blocks. It’s almost as if they can tell it’s human processed junk.

However, I think there is a rabbit that comes around to eat them, and I have seen crows peck at them. The squirrels usually need to see 1 brave squirrel eat the pumpkin seeds before they start digging in, but completely eat those.

As with any seed shells, it’s a bit messy to clean up, but it’s nutritious and that is the important part. The dried worms appear to be eaten. They take the peanuts. However, they don’t seem to like the corn.

I have tried other bags and corn is just not something squirrels will eat. I think my neighbors mouse is eating it though. Overall, 80% of the feed is eaten by the end of the day, so that’s great. – Derrick G.

We had a major squirrel problem with about 16 of them getting into our vegetable garden and were damaging everything, they were constantly trying to get into my wife’s bird feeders. I bought 2 traps and maybe the squirrels here in Maryland are just larger in size so after catching one no squirrels would go near the filled trap.

Needless to say 1 at a time per trap worked fine. I would put the traps out in the early morning, loaded with peanuts in areas where they could not use their hands to grab them out of the trap and a few peanuts where they could reach them through the wire mesh and would have a trapped squirrel in as quick as 20 minutes.

Two squirrels per morning so in 5 days I was able to remove 10 of them and transport them 14 miles to the property behind my business complex which has tall trees and a stream. They seem to be doing well in their new setting and have access to the dumpsters for the pizza shop and Vietnamese restaurant.

I have since loaned the traps to neighbors and we have really thinned the squirrel population in my area. Thanks.

I have created a mini nature preserve and dog path in my back yard for the neighborhood to enjoy(our house sits between two roads, so people can walk their dogs more safely) and everyone’s favorite part has to be our community of squirrels.

I rescued one and once she transitioned to outdoors, she quickly made a family and now we have 8-9 daily residents in houses who play all day for the enjoyment of everyone. They get about half of their food from me and the rest I force them to forage.

Even with my food(Squirrel complete) I place it all around the yard in different places so they still have to go through the foraging effort and retain their skills. I supplement this food with avocado and fruit in the winter and everyone is happy and healthy.

I don’t particular like it. The bag is mainly pumpkin seeds and rodent blocks. The squirrels won’t touch the rodent blocks at all. We took a hand full of this product and put it out on the fence for the wild squirrels and they won’t eat it either.

I have been fighting Ground Squirrels for a long time. Tried trapping and was not that successful. I was told about this product and it is so effective. Takes a week or more and you will see a lot less squirrels and then almost none.

Expensive buy super effective.

I really wanted this to work for feeding the squirrels, but there’s just way too much corn, which the squirrels refuse to eat. The doves won’t eat the corn. Apparently not even the occasional possum who strolls through our suburban backyard at night will eat the corn.

I’m mixing it with peanuts and sunflower seeds until I get through the bag and then will have to try something else. Since the squirrels and I have a deal that I feed them and they leave the bird feeder alone, I have to keep them happy.

I buy this critter mix regularly and the raccoons, squirrels and rabbits like it but I have one complaint. The bag says it contains peanuts in the shell but I can tell you I’ve never had a bag with more than 12 peanuts in it.

I buy additional and add them. Kind of misleading label.

Critters love it. Squirrels stay out of the bird feeders when given this option on the ground.

I’ll start by saying that this trap is good value, well made out of strong materials, functions well (after some experimentation and use of common sense) and works. ONCE! I caught one rat in it after only an hour of setting it.

I watched as it mustered the courage to enter it. Unfortunately i wasn’t able to release the rat immediately (well away from home in woodland 2 miles away) and consequently it will have relayed its distress to other rats.

MISTAKE. Even after power washing it and wearing gloves there haven’t been any further captures (1 week later and the bait is still there). So, the product gets 5* but in reality it’s not the way forward for long term use.

The trap does not work. The closing/trapping mechanism does not work as it is not sensitive enough to trigger when a pest enters. ( A common problem having tried other similar products and very few work as intended).

I have used the product for 3 weeks, baiting every day, and pests can enter, take the bait and leave without the cage closing. I am returning the product as it is not fit for purpose. Tim.

I found it absolutely useless – have set it seven times and five times the bait has gone without the trap springing shut. The other times the bait has gone and the trap shut with nothing inside it! In my opinion the cage is not long enough and the plate is nowhere near long enough as squirrels, rats etc.

can lean forward to get the bait without treading on the plate! A real waste of money.
