20 Best Fly Traps For Outside (2023 Updated)

These really work. without fail. The only downside is the odor that they produce. If you can place it where the smell won’t bother you, then you will be in business. We have an outdoor smoke pit where we trim meats for cooking.

Last summer the fly situation was horrible. this year with these traps, the fly issue was insignificant; to the point that we never picked up a flyswatter this summer. I buy these in bulk now. I swap them out once a week.

If you have fly problems, this is definately worth a try.

Just add water as directed and hang. These do have an odor (gotta attract the flies!) so I put them as far away from the patio as practical, and downwind. But they do catch the flies! When full, I slip a plastic bag up from the bottom while the trap is still hanging, snap down the yellow opening, tie the bag off, and carefully place it in the trash.

Supposedly non-toxic, but you sure don’t want it to leak! I used this produce a couple years ago, then accidently bought another brand in similar packaging. That brand smells better, but is does not catch the flies like this product.

feed neighbor cats outside my front door, have never seen so many flies before. just put outside and looked 10 mins later, have about a dozen flies so far. needed something safe, this is really neat, you can set it or it has a hook for hanging.

says its waterproof, nice hard plastic case, not cardboard or sticky tape, round so they stick to all sides. price was pretty good for 2. will be buying again. I bought 4 boxes with 2 inside, will be putting one inside my recycle trash can, where I put the cat cans in, has a lid but they still get in.

When I took this out of the box and put it out, it was useless. Nothing happened, no matter where I placed it. I decided that since dog poop was the attraction, I would try something. I placed dog pool in the bottom of the individual compartments, and placed it in the yard.

Worked like a charm!! Now there were so many flies attached to it, it was no longer yellow, but black. Works great. Pick it up when full and toss it. That’s it.

This stuff is maybe too good. We had a lot of flys on back porch and hung two of them. The smell is awful. It took maybe an hour to trap the first fly, and then things went nuts. Within a day, there were hundreds of flys in one.

But then the smell was bad and attracted an incredible amount of flys so the entire city was probably clear of flys except for our back porch. After about 4 days there were a couple of inches of dead flys in one and hundreds more waiting for entry.

I moved the traps to the vacant house next door (city lots): incredible number of flys. But I could still smell them at my house. Now, I have hung them over a six-foot wooden fence on the other side of the alley where it is a big vacant lot.

If you have a barn of house, make sure you can hang the trap about 50 to 75 feet away from where you don’t want any flys.

Very surprised that this fly trap really works. We had first seen them on clearance for $1. 00 each at a local store and thought what we loose. Oh my goodness, the amount of flies this thing caught in the first three days.

We went back to get more but all gone. Search on eBay was my thought; quickly found them and ordered two. if you dislike the pesky flies try one of these; it really works.

We live in South Carolina, with a large swampy body of water right behind our house. Mosquitos were relentless for our little dogs in the Spring especially. We had a bug zapper and occasionally used spray on the grass because they liked to hide there.

The bug zapper kept killing our beloved anole lizards and we don’t want pesticides getting drained into the water behind us. There are thousands of birds here, including moorehens, pelicans, egrets, wood ducks, cardinals, hawks, herons, etc.

pesticides are just not practical or safe for them or our dogs. We hung this in a wet area of our backyard, just plugged it in, and away it went. It began collecting no-see-ems, mosquitos, moths, and other annoying creatures within hours.

It’s been plugged in for about a month, and it’s interesting to watch this thing collect hundreds of mosquitos in January we had no idea we’re here! Every single time it rains, a new mess of bugs is added.

This thing is amazing, and I know my little dogs will be very grateful. We haven’t seen one mosquito bother us yet, and the no-see-ems are greatly decreased in our yard and house. I used to have them biting me while working on my computer.

Obnoxious! Note: Order it early because we couldn’t find one in stock for over a year. (Also order an extra set of bulbs because I’ve read they last about 4 months) I’m leaving this thing on year-round! Finally a great product, and it doesn’t kill the lizards I love.

I’m going to deposit the dead bugs on the ground so the lizards will have lots of crispy treats without the threat of getting zapped! Also love the ultraviolet light on it. Makes a nice, backyard light.

It takes less than 5 minutes to set this up. It’s very quiet – unlike traditional bug zappers. You leave it on 24/7 and boy does this work! It traps all kinds of bugs, and took only a few days for us to notice a real difference.

We live on the edge of wetlands and 16+ acres of dense woods, but were able to eat dinner on our deck last night with minimal disruption from any bugs – mosquitoes, gnats, flies, etc. This has only been on for about 4 days! Last time we tried to sit outside (before using this product) we were eaten alive by mosquitoes almost immediately.

Such an incredibly noticeable improvement! Cleaning is a little tricky, as the trapped bugs don’t die immediately, so newcomers will likely fly back out at you. And it’s a bit gross to see a vessel of bug carcasses.

But so worth it!.

Here is my short-hand review of this trap; I use this product at my beekeeping farm where flies, wax moths and especially mosquitoes are. Unit has damper that shuts when the thing loses power or is turned off.

It doesn’t attract bees, It attracts most biting bugs, moths that destroy stuff and nasty biting flies. It works equally well at all times during the day. I never shut it off. I have no clue why people say it doesn’t work, because it does.

It frequently fills full of bugs. Mosquitoes are hard to find in the mess of bugs because they generally get shredded up by the fan and mixed in nicely with the bugs. The removal design is lacking though, as sometimes the damper will accidentally open on the cage and allow all the bugs out during cleaning.

I have learned that I need to take a dish pan out with soapy water and set the trap (unplugged of course!) In the pan for 1/2 an hour while the bugs get a soapy “bath”. Then I can remove the trap and hose it out on the ground.

The con to this units is, 1. it does NOT destroy all bugs, most of the time they stay in their living for a very long time. 2. The dampers can have some issues, 3. The grid isn’t quite wide enough, we get some very big beetles that do not get sucked in.

Did this unit work? Yes it really does. My neighbors andI both bought one of these traps and we did not need to spray for mosquitoes this year. It is a Safer alternative honestly to have this trap. Addressing the #1 complaint on this product, people complained that this product spent most of the time luring biting bugs to their property, A; Of course it does! It takes a long time to clean out an area full of biting bugs, but that is what it is designed to do.

This is not as “REUSABLE” as they want you to believe. The only way you can truely “Reuse” this is if you buy TWO and rotate them. If you only buy one and think you’re just going to “Empty out the dead flys” and start over, THINK AGAIN.

if you keep water in the container and do not let it dry out, you will continue to attract flies for about 30 days before the jar is too full and will not hold any more flies. At this point you’ll have about half a jar of dead flies, some still live flies and about half a jar of maggot larvae ready to become more pesky flies.

So if you just dump it out, you’ve defeated your entire purpose and have only created a fly breeding farm. The trick is to close it up for another 30 days and let the container dry out and all the larvae die inside the container while you use your 2nd jar to continue catching more flies.

Then repeat for the remainder of the fly season. The real shame is that THIS SAME COMPANY (Starbar) makes a MILK JUGG TOP for use on regular milk jugs but Tractor Supply doesn’t see fit to carry it. With the MILK JUGG TOPs we just save the old jug lid and screw it on quickly after removing the fly catcher top.

Then we can just throw the jug full of flies and maggots away. WARNING; GET A NEW MILK JUG TO CONTINUE. DO NOT TRY TO REUSE THE SAME MILK JUG ONCE YOU’VE FILLED IT WITH FLIES. THE PLASTIC DOESN’T HAVE THE INTEGRITY NECESSARY TO STAY OUT IN THE ELIMENTS THAT LONG.

About half way through your second month, the jug will become brittle and disinegrate right before your eyes. Then you’ll watch all the flies come out madder than hell and set for revenge. and you’ll never make that mistake again.

As far as this jug is concerned, it might be adequate for a small appartment where flies are not too active. But it doesn’t do much on acerage with 2 horses even with feed-through fly control. The other thing to consider is when it’s time to buy more attractant.

The cost of the attractant is almost as much as the jar and lid.

This is it! The Captivator is the one item that has made the difference between being able to be in the backyard or being run indoors by flies. Within hours the Captivator starts to fill up. By the end of the week it’s full, goes into the trash can and out to the road for garbage man to pick up and haul away.

I will not be without this product working at my South Alabama home as long as they keep making and distributing it! AND it’s a reasonable price. I can’t think of anything better to spend my hard earned money on if I want peace from buzzing, biting flies in my yard.

These are the best hanging traps. Buy many and spread them around your property near your livestock in trees or bushes or buildings with a fly problem. Bait them with calf feces, dog feces or some raw hamburger and fill them part way with water.

You can use the bait that came with them and catch some flies but add milky white calf feces, sour milk or decaying meat and you will draw them to the traps in much larger numbers. Natural bates seem to work much better than the commercial stink bait they come with.

Flood them and wait 10 minutes to kill the living flies before you open the traps then bury the contents and then reset the empty traps. You’ll be catching large numbers of flies in no time and I think these work better than cheap fly strip glue traps.

I caught at least 4 quarts of flies in two traps the first few days I had them out. The flies were doing a conga line to get into the poo baited traps and just a few were bothering the calves below which were washed and bedded in clean straw.

As the summer has gone on the number of adult flies in the area have decreased and I’m catching fewer flies now than a month ago. If you keep your calves washed down and their pens cleaned the flies will naturally choose the bait in the traps.

I have @50 head of horses at my stable. The fly control includes predators, feed through fly pellets, fly bait and fly traps. Of the ‘stinky’ traps the Terminator pro is by far the best on the market.

This trap can fill in days with enormous numbers of flies. Re-bating it with the bait bags refills makes it work even better. When the flies are so hard to control with extra warm late fall weather, these traps drop the fly levels fast.

These traps will also lure the flies away from the horses and people areas if they are placed correctly.

We fly spray and pick up manure but still have lots of flies. I bought two of these and attracted so many flies right away I bought four more. Seem to work best about 3 to 4 feet off the ground so I hang them under trees in the shade as recommended for the Summer months.

Don’t hang them where the horse will play with them or indoors where it’s too dark. I keep the water about half way up the bottle. Really has helped reduce the flys.

I would have given 5 stars as one of the 3 i bought worked amazingly well. Another caught a lot of flies but not as much as the other and the 3rd one didn’t seem to work. Maybe the attractant was old? I have had similar experience with the bag fly traps as well — out of 10 bags on the property, inevitably, 3 or 4 are duds and don’t work at all.

This item arrived in a long cardboard box. Unfortunately the Fly Stik was not covered with a non-stick protector. So. the Fly Stik was stuck to the inside of the cardboard box. Had to tear the box apart, getting the “sticky goo” all over my fingers and then was not able to get all the cardboard off the Fly Stik.

Not sure if it will even catch flies. Of course, I couldn’t return the item because there was no indication that there was a “sticky” problem until I had torn the box open. Can’t returned it as unopened.

Valley Vet’s price on these Fly Stix beats my local feed store supplier by a long shot. ( I can’t blame the feed store. They just don’t have the volume of VV. The drawbacks to these fly stix are only 2 that I can think of: they cannot be re-cycled and you will occasionally catch a hungry bird.

That said they are very effective in cutting down a fly population and I use them in addition to fly predators & fly swatters.

I r first spring in our new house was awful. Came home to find a bay window in the kitchen was filled with flies. There is no way I would be able to kill them by swatting. I didn’t want to use the chemical spray.

I went to our local a equine store and found the big flystick. There it cost 10 dollars. On Stateline I could purchase four for 24 dollars. Plus these sticks sell out rather quickly. I love them so much I get them through Stateline Tack on auto~ship.

I can survive spring and summer without them.

These little pots are wonders if you have fruit flies. We keep a compost bucket in our kitchen, and have been overrun by the little buggers for months now. I have been creating my own catchers with wine glasses, plastic sandwich bags and rubber bands, and they were ugly, and I risked breaking the catchers.

These, on the other hand, are unobtrusive, sit firmly on the shelf, hide the caught bugs, and seem to attract them better than my hack. If you have fruit flies, buy a couple. You won’t regret it.

To use you put apple cider vinegar and a drop of dish soap. I often use this mixture in a little bowl by my sink in the summer. We always get little fruit flies but don’t really have any now. This little container looks much nicer and can’t be knocked over as easily as the bowl.

Within 24 hours of placing this trap on the kitchen counter with the apple cider vinegar and a drop of liquid detergent, there were over 40 fruit flies inside. I had tried a regular dish with saran wrap over it with holes punched in it and got 3-4 in 2 days.

I had been using the Starbar Captivator fly trap and it was working well. When it was finished I would push the top back down and tape over it with duct tape to seal it up and put it in a trash bag by itself to seal up the smell of death.

I thought I’d give this Rescue brand a try since it was a bit cheaper and it also had great reviews. I hang them from a fence, about 3 feet from the ground (wire hook through the hole in the plastic top).

It captured lots of flies just like the Starbar, but not any more than, and not any quicker. The Rescue has a stronger smell that was way more annoying than the Starbar. Then when I went to remove it and tape over the top with tape, I noticed one of the plastic seams at the top pleat was open! I carefully tried to tape over it to seal that spot up.

Then I noticed it was leaking from the bottom as well. The seam at the bottom was opening up! Before I knew it I had a total mess dripping out on the ground. I covered it with dirt to keep the smell down.

It’s like the plastic bag was just falling apart from a little handling. Maybe it can’t handle the Texas heat and sun. I’ve got two more of these Rescue traps, but I’m not taking the risk of it opening up on me again.

I handle these things very gently because I don’t want any liquid sloshing out. I’ll stick with the Captivator since it is a rigid plastic pail with no seams to come apart.

These things work like a charm. We hang ours on a twig of our ficus tree in the middle of the heat of the Arizona summer. We have a problem with flies near our garbage cans and then they come inside the garage and eventually into our home.

Within 2 days of hanging a new bag there can be up to 40 live flies trapped inside. These little bags have been a game changer. Instead of getting 20 flies a day in the kitchen, we get 2. I spray the house flies with Zevo, (which I also buy/order from Walmart.

) Zevo is another complete and total game changer. I do not care for the smell of Zevo but it is not offensive to everyone in our family, only me, so I use spray Microban (which I also order/buy from Walmart) to wipe up the Zevo oily residue and dead fly.

I really want this product to work because it’s organic. It sounds nice and it works a bit but I wouldn’t say it works 100%. I still see the flies flying around but it’s less. The first shipment came with broken handle so my husband lifted and water spilled everywhere.

We got a replacement and now it works about 70%. Just be careful to check the blue water often. Because it’s non-toxic, we see tons of baby insects (what do you call? Pupa? ) in the first blue water so we threw away.

Now, we are on the watch on the current one. Well, it’s organic. harmless. We hope it works better.

Where I live is notorious for having little flies all over in the summertime, especially at sunset and can be rather annoying. I bought this item and after mixing the solution with water I placed it outside and before the lid was open, I came back outside to a fly already on the lid trying to get inside.

Fast forward a few days later (last night) where I spent some time outside in the back yard, nearby where I placed the FlyBuster and no flies were bothering me, it was great! When I looked in the FlyBuster I saw those little flies trapped within.

I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a great solution to annoying flies.

This trapped worked horrifically well. It stunk up the place so I had to eventually get rid of it but it caught hundreds of flies when it was up and running. It was disgusting seeing all those dead flies.

So I didn’t buy this from the official rescue website I got it at either hoem depot or lowes. I usually use the fly trap ribbons you hang because my garage gets kidna bad with Flys especially around July August here.

Anyways both me and my dad bought one each, and the results. Are scary. Haha. He had probably a couple hundred in his bag because of dogs next door and that’s no joke, hundreds. Mine at home as a lottt too.

I will always buy these and recommend em if people have trouble with Flys. PSA these will start to stankkkkkkkk bad after awhile but hey that’s why they work so GREAT!! So little trade off can’t keep it for a long long period of time unless you can deal with the smell but from the instructions I don’t believe it’s meant to sit that long anyways.

10/10 product and works better then any other ive tried. That smell had me gagging though when I pulled it down. Haha.

I live in Florida and the flies have been ridiculous the last month or so. Every time I open the back door one or two fly in. I saw this product on TicTok and figured I would give it a try. I purchased mine at Lowes for around 10 bucks.

It comes with a packet of what I can only describe as powdered horse manure. You pour this in the container and add water to the fill line. I had originally placed it on the back porch but have moved it to the back of the property.

It started working immediately. Besides the smell it seems to attract every fly in the neighborhood to it, hence why I moved it. It’s been out less than 4 days and we have about 3 inches of dead flies floating.

Not sure I will have the stomach to empty it and buy the refill. Definitely worth the purchase price.

I was in Hone Depot when this product was being features. I bought one and I went beck and bought 3 more. This product works!! In just a matter of hours I saw results. The flies were inside and could not exit.

In just 1 month there was so many flies tou could not count. I am so glad I bought it. You can enjoy eating outside and not be bothered with pesky flies!! Thank You. is not enough to say.

We keep horses, donkeys, and cattle (12-14 total) in a pasture next to our house. Needless to say, flies are a problem during the warm months. I’ve tried many versions of fly traps and this one seems to trap the most flies.

The attractant that comes with it works better than other brands or any homemade bait I’ve concocted. The one thing I DON’T like is that the traps are intended to be single use. That just seems so wasteful.

So, when the traps get full, I flush the dead flies out with a garden hose and reuse the traps until the plastic cracks – usually after one season. (If you do this, be forewarned that rinsing is a gross job and the dead flies stink!) I refill using Starbar attractant sold separately for their reusable traps (1 packet can be split between 2 of these traps).

I do wish Starbar would make a truly reusable trap that has the same efficient bell-shaped design! If you try these and aren’t having much success, be sure to try moving them around (higher vs lower, sun vs shade, etc.

).

I placed 4 traps within 3 to 10 feet of our stable’s manure pile. Two were in the shade and 2 in the sun. All the traps were hanging approximately 2-3 ft off the ground. After 24 hrs, 3 flies were in one trap and 2 flies in another.

After 6 days, each trap had about 10 dead flies inside. Our barn has 10 horses and the manure pile is 14ft x 20ft with alot of flies on it! These fly traps are useless for our barn and I will not buy again.

I purchased 4 of these fly traps because they claimed to be so effective and also safe to use around animals. I have a fly problem in my barn, where I am brooding some ducklings. I put one of these traps in there(hanging) 4 days ago.

It caught exactly 3 flies and I had a duckling dead this morning that died of fly strike, the poor thing. So, no, I would definitely NOT recommend it because I think this product is USELESS.

We had gnats in the 1000’s an hour. We live on a lake. I sprayed constantly to kill them. My windows and door step were covered. A “losing battle”. My dog wouldn’t go out my door because he did not want to step on them.

Then we got this thing. NO MORE SPRAY. This kills them and they are attracted to the light inside the Zapper and not the light at my entry door. I used to have to wipe off the door step EVERY morning before we could walk in and out to the patio.

We hardly see any gnats at our doorstep. To clean the Zapper, I push open the slide box on the Zapper and dump the gnats out. They don’t stick to it so it is clean. I throw the dead gnats in the lake and the ducks love it.

I guess fried gnats is on their menu.

There is nothing sweeter than the sound of zip zap mosquito genocide. I got two of these things for out back and I haven’t had a mosquito mess with me since. Every time it zaps I smile knowing some evil mosquito is frying to a crisp instead of snacking on my blood.

Take the outside back from those little buggers. Also doesn’t seem to worth that great on moths they don’t fit through the bars maybe I just have giant backwoods hill billy moths but I find a few little ones in there everyday.

All and all I love them have yet to see what happens in the rain. Also is a cool nightlight.

We bought this because we have always issues with mosquitoes, as we live by the water. I wanted to buy one for a while, but was concerned a about the efficiency of a lamp like this. As Memorial bbq was terrible, due to many bites I thought I give this a chance, as it is a name brand product.

It works great and you can hear it zizzle sometimes. We cleaned it and found quite a few victims. Great product for parents of small kids if you don’t want to use spray on their delicate skin.

I have had mine for for about two weeks. At first it did not seem to be working I was only seeing about 5 flies in the trap. Then the weekend happened and I looked in the bag and there were 10 just flying around inside the bag.

Looking at the bag last night and it seems as though it has caught about 60 or so flies.

This works absolutely great, haven’t been bothered by flies while on my porch this year. With the hot weather, there seem to be more flies than in previous years, but this trap has caught so many flies that I haven’t needed to use any chemical bug spray.

My wife and I love to sit outdoors. Flies make this less enjoyable. We bought a disposable trap, and we’re floored at how effective it was. We bought the reusable one next with the same results. It takes a couple of days for the attractant to reach full strength, but when it does, the trap fills quickly! Love and am amazed with this product! Beware though, it smells to high heaven.

Make sure to wear gloves!.

I placed one trap in my small office/bird room where the fruit flies were becoming a bit of a growing nuisance around the parrot cages and lidded garbage can. It took about 2 weeks to notice a difference in the reduction of flies.

Now after a couple of months, there aren’t any! The soapstone box is functional, attractive and discrete. There is no smell or fear of chemicals around my parrots. I’ve placed it on my desk near the garbage but well away from the birdcages just in case.

I highly recommend for those with fruit fly problems. I will get one for the kitchen as well.

I read the reviews and decided it was about 50/50 on whether this product worked so I thought I would chance it. Well here in the Midwest we’ve had horrible fruit flies this fall and this has done nothing to help.

So good luck if you decide to try this item. One star says item is really cute but it does nothing for reducing the number of fruit flies this fall.

The Soapstone box is beautifully made and looks like it might contain potpourri, rather than the anonymous insect trap! This is my second one because I keep a lot of fruit all the time in more than one place in my home.

The trap attracts with no problem in an adequate space but with fruit in other rooms I have found two is more efficient. Hint: Place the trap in the holder before pushing the holes open with the little stick to insure not spilling the contents.

It did seem to help draw the bugs away from the house and toward the barn where we had it hanging. However it seemed to attract mostly moths and small non-biting bugs. It often seemed to not kill them, just trap them in the tray.

The bulbs only lasted about four months and then burned out. We didn’t feel like it was worth replacing the bulbs no better than it worked to begin with. I miss the good old days when a bug zapper had an audible “pop” when a bug landed on it and it killed bugs readily.

We are plagued by mosquitos. I am afraid of getting West Nile Virus which was prevalent in our area last year. We have two doggy doors and our three dogs must bring them in with them when they go outside.

We also have a pool and plants that do not help. We have one of these zappers near the kitchen island and one over in the TV room. When we sit down at night to watch TV, there is always zapping activity.

At least it keeps us from getting bitten. I keep them on all night as they are attracted to the light of the zapper and it helps keep them at bay. We also have one upstairs in our bedroom. We do not turn on the the lights until we go to sleep and again, I think the light from the zapper keeps the mosquitos from biting us all night long.

I will also say that we use the Honeywell Quiet Set fans to keep the air moving. I move the fans around wherever I am working. I love that there are no odors from the zappers. This set-up has been a game changer this summer!.

I tried this device for three weeks. We have a cloud of mosquitos and flies outside our back door, but this device caught only three mosquitos the whole time. I had to take it down and recharge it every 24 hours, but other than that, it was running non-stop.

It’s a good thing it didn’t fill up with bugs, because it is difficult to clean. The three little mosquitos were stuck inside and it was almost impossible to peel them off using the tiny brush. The tiny little flap that covers the port for the charger is floppy and keeps popping open.

I realized the port would soon get clogged with dust and the charger would stop working. I found this device to be useless and poorly designed, so I returned it.

Brilliant, expensive, smells absolutely disgusting, but effective, mine was an inch thick withing a couple of hours, completely full in 3 to 4 days, and despite a zip lock bag, and 3 thick black bin bags, it still smells like I’ve buries a body! Yes have used bleach, smells still in bin! Using because I’ve not found a better alternative.

Cheap plastic bottle, 1 of the 3 I purchased didn’t have a sachet it, and the handle broke as I picked it up, it should be a whole lot cheaper, the almost £8 price is extortionate, however it does work.

I live near a river so flies are inevitable but they seem to be swarming this year. Bought this product, put it in my garden and within 20 mins its working. There are flies being caught as I type. This makes me very happy because Im sick of the bug ers 😉 Well done, great product, highly recommended.

These are amazingly effective. They only lure flies, blue bottles, wasps and mossies inside. My asummer kitchen was fly free for the first time ever and then wasps were lured away from my fruit trees.
