20 Best Fly Sheet For Horses (2023 Updated)

This is the best economy fly sheet I’ve had so far. It features a double buckle front closure to ensure proper fit and has a front Velcro closure (between the top and bottom buckles) to ensure the sheet stays on.

The two strap surcingle closure is standard and has plenty of adjustability. This sheet comes with leg straps, which I love!! Although I will say they seem short as I had to adjust them to full length to fit.

I purchased the teal color which is gorgeous on my palomino and the 78″ is true to size. The material is light weight, but I cannot comment on breathability during the summer as I’ve only used it during the winter.

(My boy must have one on 24/7 right not due to an abscess on his back. ) Seeing as he has worn it 24/7 for over a month and I wash it every other day, the material has held up well. The only thing I have to say is save the extra Velcro piece that comes with the new product and put it over the “teeth” part of the Velcro on the front when washing/drying.

I forgot to do this the last time I washed the blanket and the Velcro caught the fabric and caused fraying across the material. Before this, the blanket looked brand new after wearing and washing. The fraying has not affected it’s use though, so no big deal.

I will purchase this same blanket again.

For the price this is a pretty good fly sheet. Especially if your horse isn?t too hard on blankets. My horse is a roller and the sheet has one small hole after a week of rolling. All of the hardware is in good order and it hoses off pretty well.

My Arabian is highly allergic to fly bites and this sheet works very well against the flies in our area. He is also used to hot and humid weather and this sheet is fine for him in temperatures up to the mid-80?s.

Anything hotter and I use his other fly sheet which is more breathable (and four times the price). If you?re on a budget and live in a milder (but not very hot and humid) climate this sheet my work for you.

I could not be more unhappy with this product, or more disappointed in Dover for even selling such garbage. The sizing is weird but I could have gotten past that. The material is so cheap and both of the fly sheets I bought ripped on the first day.

Do yourself and your horse a favor and buy from a different brand. Smartpak has some good ones I would recommend over this product. I don’t even trust Dover anymore to buy my products from since they clearly don’t do quality control.

So angry that I wasted my money.

The front clasp broke 1 month into owning this fly sheet. The clasp is permanently “open” and so there isn’t a way to “close” it and safely secure the front of the blanket in both areas (as only one of the clasps works).

Therefore the blanket becomes looser/more open in the front / less secure so it’s unsafe for him to wear when he’s out in his paddock and where he needs it most. If fits him so well and is in perfect condition just sitting in a container in my garage which is so frustrating!!! I had so much hope for this fly sheet.

Since the clasp is stitched to the fabric, there isn’t a way to replace it. I would love it if there was a way to get this repaired or if there was a warranty. It’s so aggravating that it only lasted a month.

He’s an easy keeper too!.

I’ve been buying fly sheets for many decades now and I was skeptical about this one bc the belly was a little weird. Well this is by far the best fly sheet I’ve ever bought. Durable, light weight and washes beautifully.

The other fly sheets shredded at the inside shoulders of my big Irish Sport horse. This one held up. It also doesn’t slide back like some others. I tried those other super light weight nylon/ plastic feeling sheets.

The horses get filthy with them. May as well not have a sheet in at all. I’ll stick with this sheet. Hopefully WeatherBeeter continues making it.

I love how well-made this fly sheet is as well as the way the belly and chest fasteners work. The velcro is so helpful, and the snaps are easy to connect. The sheet is generously cut, which means it’s not tight in the shoulders of my Percheron/TB mare, the way many fly sheets are.

And it has nice touches to prevent rubbing. My mare also appreciates the longer side pieces for more protection. My only complaint is that the snap for the tail strap is in the unfortunate position of always getting covered in poop.

So I recommend having handy wipes available when removing the sheet!.

I’ve alternated between the Rambo and the Horseware Ireland Amigo Evolution (looks like my horse belongs at Ye Olde Renaissance Faire). While I love the lightweight nature of the Amigo, those things don’t hold up for.

well, you know what. The mesh is simply too light and tears on branches or if he scratches. The Rambo is sturdier, but also heavier. I bought this in a 72 because my boy wears a 72 in the Amigo. He needs a 69 in the Rambo, which fits much better.

He was swimming in the 72 Rambo – loose everywhere, belly, withers to tail. In a 69 his belly is protected with no chance of getting a hoof stuck. The neck protector must be one size fits all because it’s super loose on my short, sturdy boy, but you can’t have everything.

TL;DR – Amigo Evolutions don’t last even a single season, the Rambo is heavier but sturdier, and size down if you’re transitioning from Amigo to Rambo.

I have been purchasing the Rambo flysheet for years, but this one is new and improved and I like it better than its predecessors. The flysheet is durable, doesn’t slip, and efficiently keeps the flies off, especially the belly.

They have added a Velcro strip to the front most belly strap and have lengthened the belly cover so there is no way a fly can get at my horse’s belly. Love the new trim color (navy rather than brown).

My horses live outside so they wear these flysheets 24/7. I wash them in my washing machine on warm, then air dry, and they last for several seasons. I can’t say enough good things about this new, improved Rambo sheet.

After buying a new horse that bucked and spun when horse flies landed on his rump, I bought this rump cover. I was SOLD after the first ride with it!!! It has taken care of the buck, spin or crow-hope issue and helped the horse to enjoy his work again.

Both of our trail horses wear them now and love them! No issues with them getting hung-up in the brush or woods. Stays in place well and is easy to use. I bought two small nylon dog collars to attach the dee rings of the rump sheet to my saddle.

The velcro tabs are well placed and work well for the attachment towards the top of my western saddle.

As a member of a Mounted Search and Rescue Unit, I don’t get to choose when to avoid riding when the big horse flies are out. On our last search, the wooded area we were assigned to search was loaded with those biting flies as well as the horse flies.

This product kept the bugs from being able to bite my horse’s rump while we were searching. Fit was very good with my western saddle. After seeing how well this sheet worked, I ordered 2 more when I saw they were on sale.

I can now have one for use on my granddaughter’s horse when we are trail riding as well as one put aside for the future!.

This rump sheet has been one of the best accessories I have ever purchased for my horses! It really works to keep the big horse flies from biting them! We have used them for a whole season and not had one horse crow-hop or buck! It was a constant problem before we purchased the fly sheets.

It’s reduced the problem 100% and now I don’t ride without one. I recommend them to everyone who has a crow-hopping/ bucking horse when those big black horse flies land on their horse’s hind quarters.

Ok listen, I’ve had this fly sheet for two years and it is just now starting to get fringe. Idk where in the heck everyone else is shopping but this is the best fly sheet I’ve ever owned. I have never found one that’s lighter weight than this, had a better belly band design, or more durable.

Let me tell you what, my flysheet has seen some shtuff. I put it a size 78 on our 17. 2 hand thoroughbred X Belgian draft and then I put the same sheet on my 16 hand thick paint horse. Its so adjustable and stretchy and covers a lot of places that other fly sheets don’t.

Additionally, it’s super light weight. Yes they sweat but sure as heck not because of a see through fly sheet like this. They were sweating before I put it on them too because thats what happens at one hundred flippin degrees.

So is it worth it? Heck yeah. Buy this. Yeah, I wish the tail flap was removable too, but what the heck I can take it off myself (which haven’t by the way). And no my men have never peed in their own fly sheet.

If you have a problem with that happening, maybe your horse should not wear belly bands all together because- by the way- that part is removable and can be replaced with regular straps.

I have tried quite a few fly sheets over the years. This particular fly sheet does not make my horses sweat as much as other fly sheets have. Most importantly, this fly sheet has held up very well. My horses roll a lot when outside and this sheet has not torn at all.

I’m impressed.

I bought this fly sheet and after only 2 wearings one of the belly straps broke away from the material. I like the way this fly sheet is made and how light it is. My horse likes it to. I was disappointed when I walked out to the pasture only to find the flap half way hanging.

He still wears it but the flies can now get underneath on him. If it wasn?t for that I would have given it 5 stars.

Great product! Looks just like the picture and it fits great! I bought a 40 inch for my mini/pony mix who is about 38 inches tall. This product is great quality and I would definitely recommend it.

Bought 5 of these for 4 of our mini horses. They have lasted all summer in the CA heat and sun. No sweating underneath and allow for breathing. Held up well and ordered 4 more!

It runs small. I ordered a 44 and it was really small. this is the size that my mini has taken for years. I was desperate to keep the flies off of him, so I just kept it. small. Good product though. Durability: 4.

Fits well, durable, and lots of eye appeal. Obviously designed by horse people for horses. I have never liked the sort of snap used on the belly and leg straps, but once you get used to them, they work well.

This fly sheet does help to keep irritating insects from swarming your horse and will help pay for the sheet with the savings in fly repellent. A little costlier than some other blankets, but so far the durability and reason for buying it has given me reason enough to continue using this style of blanket by this manufacturer.

The quality of this is good, although I’m always amused that they ask for these reviews to include “durability” for something new. The thing to be aware of is the very fitted area over the hindquarters.

This pulls the sheet back until it sits the way it wants in the back. That would be okay if you order one which is long enough. I ordered the usual size for my gelding and the shape pulled it back so it was tight across the front.

I exchanged for a size 2″ larger but it is still tight in front once it settles. Someone asked earlier about absence of a tail flap but on my gelding it sits far enough back to almost close over his tail so the coverage there is good.

This is my second Professional Choice Fly Sheet. The first sheet I bought was for my late horse and although it fit my new horse, I felt a slightly larger size would be more comfortable. This sheet has had many comments on how nice it looks and about the durability of the weave.

Many of the other horses at our barn have knit sheets that become torn and have to be repaired often. My first sheet as well as this new sheet have never needed repairs. When they get muddy, I put them in the wash on warm and low in the dryer.

They look brand new and I like that my horse always looks good and is fly and sun protected in his pasture. My horse may sweat a little with this sheet, but when it is in the high 80-90’s they sweat anyway.

He seems comfortable and never tries to remove his sheet. Comfort: 4 Durability: 5.

I got this rug as it came recommended on FB. Good points: well made, fits standing pony (Connemara) well; I repeat that the pony needs to stand still for this rug to fit. Now negatives: as soon as the pony moves, the rug slides backwards so much so that the front pushes badly on the animal treat.

Note that the sizing is good and I have tried to adjust the fitting in every possible way – no difference to the rung sliding backwards! Even so, I have decided to put the run on the pony and let her our to graze.

big mistake! She was close to choking when she put her head down as the rug was pressing badly on her throat. So I cannot use this rug! All the monies to the drain as I cannot return it! One of the costliest mistakes I ever made.

Th company must be away of this issue! Surly they should advise the customers that this rung is not suitable for horses that are moving. Perhaps one can use this rung on a a horse that is tied to a fence or post but NOT on an animal that is moving or grazing.

I am extremely disappointed!.

My review is based off of just under 3 weeks of use. My only comparison is with ShooFly (and similar designed products). I tried these because my 3yr AQHA small framed mare suffered a recent head trauma & is very neurological at the moment (it is improving).

Increased fly spray use caused her to break out in dermititis. So I was scrambling to try to find something to help with the flies that wouldn’t trip her up. The ShooFly type boots have never fit her right.

She manages to walk out of them within 24 hours. And I couldn’t risk her tripping more than she already is. Pros: -soft materials, especially at the base & top -has not fallen down or off (stays in place) -zero rubbing -keeps flies off of lower legs Cons: -Regular Price (but I bought 3 sets at the end of the season) -unsure of longevity.

Coming up on 3 weeks of constant use & I see some tearing. But my mare’s legs rub when she walks. She trips frequently. Housed in indoor arena or dry lot. So I feel like she wears on them more than normal use.

Never have I ever been so disappointed in a blanket. I bought this for my 14 yr old warmblood who is turned out in a muddy field all day in a place where it rains a lot. His old rain sheet needed re-waterproofing, so I bought this for him to wear while that one was out getting repaired for a few weeks.

My horse rolls and plays a lot so leg straps are a must for him: After 2 weeks, one of the leg straps had completely ripped off the blanket (the fabric part where it attaches completely ripped off). I crossed my fingers hoping it would stay on for the next few days with just the belly straps until I could get my other blanket back, but came out to the barn the following day to find the back end of the blanket flipped over top, exposing him to the rain, and the whole blanket bunched up around his neck while he was grazing.

My initial fear was for safety, that he could have gotten caught up in the blanket, but then I realize this blanket rips so easily that likely it would easily tear in that case! It is now held together by a tail strap I cobbled together from the un damaged leg strap, and am hoping that holds it long enough for me to figure out a better blanket situation.

So extremely disappointed. For over a $100 I would expect it to last for more than 2 weeks.

This comment refers only to the Zebra patterned fly sheet. This is the only solution I have found to relieve sweet itch in my pony. I could use fly spray, but the cost of daily sprayings far outweighed the price of the sheet.

Plus I did not like my pony being covered in chemicals. My pony lives on 160 acres of bush/grass pasture, and she is in a 30-horse herd. I thought I would be lucky if this sheet lasted more than a couple of days; it lasted 4 months! We had horrendous hot weather in 2021 and this sheet kept her cool and comfortable.

I expected pulls at the neck because it is all one piece, but it never pulled on her, or rubbed. For anyone with sweet itch (alergies to no-seeums or midges), this sheet fixes that problem. No more rubbing raw for this pony.

The sheet also keeps the flies away, and will also keep the flies away from the horse standing next to it. Apparently Zebras evolved to fix their fly problem!.

This is the first time I’ve bought a fly sheet for a horse. I lived in California until a few months ago, and flies weren’t the big problem they are in NC. This fly sheet seems really sturdy, my mare likes it, seems to understand that the sheet means fewer flies.

The sheet is her normal size, a 75. The loose fit in the belly area seems like it will fit her tummy throughout her pregnancy, but looks like it will fit her slim self next summer as well. I love this fly sheet!.

This is a nice fly sheet but …. it runs large. I ordered a 78 (my mare’s normal size) and she was swimming in it. The belly band surcingles are not long enough to get it even close to being snug.

Also, I would not recommend it for Florida summers. It’d be too hot. Order down at least one size, and take your horse north for the summer! I’d give it five stars otherwise.

Thanks to SmartPak’s excellent return policy I was finally able to find a lightweight sheet that works for my large gelding. The fine mesh provides good airflow and the neck piece stays up very well.

The sheet stays in place too! Four stars instead of five only because the drop is a little short and belly band barely fit even after being let out completely. This was a recurrent problem with the sheets I tried with some of them not even going halfway around his stomach! Yes, he has an ample girth, but a few more inches of adjustment is in order.

This is the best coverage flysheet for my mare and I have tried many. It does not work for my geldings as the bellyband is too long and they pee in it/on it and it becomes a mess. One of the only sheets that has a very generous neck piece which doesn’t rub out the mane.

I live in the north and the mosquitoes can be horrendous and it works great to keep her covered. I also therefore don’t have the problem of it being too hot. As others have said they run large by at least a size.

Thanks to all the other reviewers who helped me choose a size. Rosie is a stocky 15. 2 Warmblood/TB cross. She normally wears a 75/76″ blanket but I purchased a 72″ and a smaller size would have been even better.

The seam above the tail flap hangs down on her tail. The neck piece fits great, long enough without being too long. The stretchy part over the ears fits well and she can graze comfortably. She needed this because the bugs torment her especially on the midline of her belly and the top of her neck.

The extra long belly panel covers her very well. I had to shorten the straps as far as possible to get the panel to fit close to her belly and keep out the insects. The front closure hangs down below her neck too far and she developed rub marks on her chest on both sides where the straps are sewn on.

I believe I have solved this by sewing straps and buckles along the neckline side of the shoulder. I was able to cinch up that area and lift the front chest part of the sheet. Again, a smaller size most likely would have better but I was in a hurry to get her covered.

She is much less itchy now. The sheet is sturdy and shows no damage although it is brown from her rolling in the dirt. Why does anyone make white horse blankets? A well-made product, good sturdy fabric.

I love this sheet! But like any other product, its not perfect. This sheet does run big! My gelding is a 75, i got a 72. I probably could’ve went another size down. The sheet doesnt rub him in anyway, its very breathable.

No sweat in the low 90s. My boy is very hard on sheets and its held up well. I would recommend, only issue is the sheet runs big, bellyband doesnt go up any higher. great for mares. a problem for geldings.

I put this on my pony, who loves destroying flysheets and rubbing out her mane. It held up surprisingly well. A few holes but small enough to patch and it saved her mane when she wore it. The reflectors are AMAZING, they glowed on the security camera.

The horses decided to get out and Im so glad one was wearing the sheet it let us know without a doubt they got out. I plan on getting another for my baby horse next year. I was a bit disappointed it did not have a belly band option for the pony sizes.

That’s why it’s not 5 stars. But I do love it.

purchased this blanket for my quarter horse built like a good qtr mare, however blanket hangs, had to cut the slits open to help the blanket stay in place on the horse and get air flow on hot days. Lucky had a lengthy saddle bred type horse, works much better for horses with no widthers.

Dissapointed. But was able to use on other horse. Not recommended for temps over 95 degrees to hot. Keeps bugs off horse great.

Love this fly sheet. I have a black Friesian that is turned out in the Texas sun. It definitely helps to keep her coat from getting bleached out. It is just the right weight and very breathable for a UV sheet.

This sheet lasts for years! Had to buy a new one as her pasture buddy groomed a couple of holes in hers. Summer Temperatures are up to 100 degrees, but she does not sweat excessively in it as it reflects a lot of the sunlight.

Keeps her clean and the flys at bay!.

This sheet looks great, is made with excellent materials, looks to be sewn together really well. But there is a big drawback that make me give it only an average rating. The fleecy liner which is part of their “Smartex” design (which is supposed to wick away moisture so that you can put it on a wet / sweaty horse) makes it not at all slippery along their body.

In fact it really fights against the back and side coat; imagine a fabric with a heavy nap working against the nap of another fabric opposing it. The problem with this is that when the horse puts his head down to eat off the ground, for example, there is no forward give at all of the sheet.

It looks very uncomfortable to wear in that posture, with the chest and withers straining against the blanket in a way I’ve never observed in another sheet / blanket. I wouldn’t say it actually stopped my horse from eating (that would be impressive!), but I think it would make for a really long day, and a much longer winter.

Unfortunately I did not notice this drawback until after we’d used the sheet for a couple of nights and so I can’t return it. Off to the consignment shop it will go. And it was really expensive so I’m pretty bummed.

Because we only used it for a couple of days I can’t actually say how waterproof, rip-resistant, or effective the advertised wicking is.

I purchased this sheet second hand to replace a Bucas Buzz Off from 5 years ago. I loved my old sheet! This seems to have replaced that version and it’s terrible. and pricey considering the quality. The neck piece is attached, so rubs the withers until there’s no hair, the clips are plastic?? So I guess if you keep your horse indoors where he won’t move they shouldn’t break, there’s no adjustability to chest; the worst though is the belly piece, it’s got elastic bands that run under the girth area and literally under the flanks (I’m not sure there’s a horse alive that likes straps tightened there) they are also NOT adjustable.

I own a thoroughbred and I had to use bale twine to add more than 4 inches of length! The next day he had two large rub marks created by the bundled elastic. It wasn’t tight, but apparently not loose enough since the elastic just pulls in the slack.

The length though was appropriate, ehich is the kicker since to make the belly fit as it is I’d need at least 3 sizes up. So, in conclusion, if you own an anorexic horse with no wither and who likes elastics strapped to their flanks then you might like this sheet.

Otherwise save your money and buy two that fit MUCH nicer. So disappointed!!.

I bought this sheet because of my poor gelding’s sweet itch. It covers him from “stem to stern” and very securely. The belly band can be snug at first but it does “give” as it is worn. Turn snaps to the smooth side to decrease discomfort.

The sheet stays in place and doesn’t rub or shift. The fabric is really very durable as is the Velcro – no messing around there. It has really kept out the bugs and seems quite breathable. There is an ear strap but it seemed to rub on my man.

I discontinued its use but the neck still stays up in position. It also washes up like a dream. My only complaint is that the O rings through which the Velcro attaches at the neck have broken. after less then 60 days of use.
