20 Best Fly Masks For Horses (2023 Updated)

I love these crusader fly masks, started buying two for my draft , liked them So much I bought warmblood size for my Tb/ perch mare and horse size for my Arab/ Fresians. All with the full nose and full ears.

The forelock sticks out the center hole which is a good feature to secure the mask and keeps the forelock out of their eyes. The nose covering is excellent even if a bit long, no problem grazing, eating hay or drinking with it, and the flys which normally congregate on their exposed nose are now on the fly mask.

It’s stays put for overnights. Im a big fan now of the Crusader brand flymask after having numerous brands in my collection! It’s my favorite by far for all my horses, not just the Percheron draft, which was my initial introduction.

Owning a bald faced horse, I take great care to find fly masks that will not only keep him comfortable from the bugs, but prevent the horrible sunburn that he is prone to. Ever since I found the Crusader Mask, I have continued to reorder countless times because I really do love it.

I keep two on hand at all times so that when one gets dirty I can just switch it out with a clean one. My gelding is 15hh and on the smaller side so I do now order a Cob size instead of Horse and it’s the perfect fit.

The Velcro piece keeps the mask super secure so I no longer spend time roaming the fields looking for fly masks lost during roll sessions and the material is heavy duty yet breathable. I’ve also had great success with washing these when they get muddy and they come out looking great.

This is a wonderful lightweight, cool mask, albeit not too sturdy. I like that the eye darts are far enough apart for my horse’s widely-spaced eyes. But the other day, I nearly smothered him! I had not noticed how bad those little circles of dirt that accumulate opposite the nostrils on the nosepiece from my horse breathing in and out had gotten.

We were trotting along, and suddenly my horse began to grunt and slow down. I let him stop and he madly rubbed his nose on his leg. I realized to my horror that the soft mesh fabric, blocked with dirt exactly where his nostrils are, was being sucked over his nostrils with every inhale he took, effectively not letting him breathe! Don’t be a dummy like me! Keep the mask clean.

I’ve been using this fly mask (with ears) on both of my horses for lunging and riding. So far I’m very impressed. It is effective at keeping flies and gnats away from their eyes and ears so they are less inclined to toss their heads when I’m trying to have a productive training session.

There seems to be no impairment of their vision and, in fact, I think they can see better through this fly mask than the masks that I use for turnout. The material is durable and easy to rinse clean but I would not use this fly mask for turnout as my 2 horses would certainly rub it on something harsh and tear it.

I only bought 1 since I wasn’t sure of the size. The horse size adjusts to fit both my draft cross gelding (large head) and my smaller Lusitano mare. If I splurge and get a second one for next summer, I’ll buy the horse size again.

Last year I bought the plain cashel masks and they held up the best out of all the brands I tried. My mare gets very itchy in the summer and really takes hers through the ringer but, it lasted so this year I decided to get more cashel masks and I went for the patterned ones.

They are lovely patterns and colors with the same great build and durability as the originals. My mare has a horse size mask that fits really well (shes a Mustang and shes got lovely longer ears-fits perfect in HORSE size) My gelding has a more refined head as hes a small quarterhorse so he gets the cob/arab size and it fits him well! Again, I am happy with this purchase! Thanks for carrying the wonderful variety of masks, Smartpak! The only other mask I like as much so far has been the Noble mask its a little more breezy than these and held up almost as well.

If Smartpak carried these again, I’d get those in a heartbeat too!.

In my rural ranching community in northern Arizona, there are not many Arabs so local feed store selection limited. My Arab is the King of the pasture with his fashion Stars and Stripes fly mask. I ordered the leopard (no ears) mask, too.

At 25 years old, Noble Renegade is a veteran of mask-disposal-off-head antics during his daytime romp in the pasture. He has cataracts so we take it off at night for better vision. Of course it doesn’t stay on as long you want it to.

He makes me get my daily walking steps in as I tour the pasture looking for the missing. Easy to spot the fancy colored mask hanging neatly on the fence snagged on the wire. No harm done to this mask because of the sturdy quality construction of the Cashel Crusader (no ears) mask.

Love this Cashel fly mask. I usually order the light blue ears to support Wounded Warriors, and I did get another of those, but decided to stick with a patriotic theme. My gelding was the talk of the barn on July 4th.

Everyone at our barn LOVES this fly mask. I hope Cashel makes more like this! And most importantly – keeps flys out of his ears and eyes, it’s not black so doesn’t attract the sun and get hot, stays on well and cleans easily.

Our wounded warrior masks are on year 3. The colored ears are also easier to find in the field than the all grey.

I had two of the older style masks which I loved. However, I needed two more masks so I could upgrade the masks for the other two horses. This new style is roomier for the eyes, their eyebrow hairs and the forelock.

No mask touching the eyebrows which will bother them. The mask has more mesh allowing for a cooler head. They fit amazingly well and my horses just chill out. No rubbing trying to get it off. No head shaking because it is ill fitting.

The quality is outstanding. None of my horses resist the mask being put on. They know it works, it gives them peace and one horse just puts her head down to let me slide it over her ears. I was impressed with the ones I got many years ago.

these newer designs I just got are even better. Little changes make a big difference. Spend the money. you will love these masks. I love them and my horses love them too!.

I personally love the comfortable construction and appearance of this mask, but my 11. 1 pony can only wear it on cloudy days. I’ve put it over my own face to see what he is seeing, and there is a noticeable shiny glare from sun on the black netting.

He probably sees those lines of reflecting sun also. He tried to immediately rub the mask off, and tossed his head while wearing it in sunshine. On a cloudy day he was fine with it. It’s well made and looks very nice on his head, but the plastic net/mesh unfortunately causes that sun glare on the inside.

I wish the pony liked it, and if the net/mesh eye covering was made of a non-glare material, it would be great. Fits him very well.

I bought 3 varieties – 2 new AND improved and 1 of my old stand by. The regular fine mesh continues to be the BEST overall mask for my big headed Irish Sport. The black fine mesh keeps his eyes from watering (dust or sun I don’t know).

It Oversized is plenty wide enough in the eyes to leave his lashes alone and it doesn’t irritate his forehead too much (cashel crusader is a great product but it sits on his forehead and makes him scratch).

The 2 new this year and 1 last year were all supposed to stay off his face better. None of them did. My only recommendation for ALL fly masks is to put the ear stitching on the OUTSIDE. I know we want our beautiful kids to look beautiful BUT that stitching day after day irritates their sensitive ears!.

Life of luxury for my 26 year old Pure bred Arabian gelding is this fly mask. His “forever” home is my 2 acre hilltop pasture in Chino Valley Arizona. Found out he doesn’t like the ears version when I found it hanging the fence.

Cut them off and stays on now. This meshed mask perfect for him to wear overnight in fly season. He has cataracts so this mesh is easier for him to see at night. Leaving it on all day/ night 3 days then then off 2 nights for one-on-one bonding him and I.

PTSD rehab for both of us. He’s a retired 50+ mile Endurance champion and I’m a retired 23 year USAF officer. Excellent quality durable mask. No more rubbing it off on fence but there are strategically placed rips on nose and eyes – not a game changer.

Have a 2nd mask waiting in the tack room. This is the most durable of all the other masks He’s destroyed.

Where we live we are surrounded by forests, and we ride in our round pen, which is in our pasture. We have a wide variety of insects, from tiny gnats to large horse flies, and it is hard on the horses to keep getting bitten by insects while we are riding.

This Cashel Quiet Ride Fly Mask takes the horse’s mind off the insect torture, and helps him focus on giving us an enjoyable ride. They really work, and we can have fun with our horses instead of constantly slapping at the insects.

In addition, some insects carry disease, so these fly masks help prevent infections as well. This is an all-around useful product.

It’s okay, does the trick. What annoys me is that there isn’t much eye room. My horse’s head isn’t THAT big. the nose guard is best feature. Also WHY IS IT BLACK??? Seems that regular netting color, clear, would give better vision on the trail.

No distributor seems to know. It’s lightweight, and does keep her from constantly tossing her head.

I like these fly masks because they are more see through with the finer mesh. It did a great job of getting the flys out of the horses eyes and was simple to brush off. However, it did not make it a whole summer.

barely a few months. My horse had had his pervious fly mask for years and is now wearing a back up one I’ve had for awhile so he’s not particularly hard on them. When I found this one in his stall it was ripped to shreds.

For over $30 I excepted it to last a few summers.

I really like this fly mask for our horses. We have several horses out in pasture where we leave the mask on 24/7 and this mask allows great visibility for them especially at night. Last summer they kept their masks on the entire time–even when one of the straps broke, the other one was enough to keep the mask in place.

I highly recommend it! The size can be a challenge but we purchased the Warmblood and Horse so that we could try them on each horse before purchasing. The Warmblood is huge but it is somewhat adjustable and allows plenty of room between the netting and the eyes.

The Horse size fits our quarter horses but the Warmblood fits every larger horse.

I bought 4 of this product in different colors because I had just gotten a blue eyed mare who needs the UV protection. Of the 4 masks I bought, only one of them has made it almost 4 months without having holes/tears at the mask’s point of the eye.

This is the first time in decades I haven’t bought SuperMask brand and those have lasted me at least 1-2 seasons. The Kensington didn’t make it 2 months on 2 horses. Isn’t cutting it at 3 1/2 months on 1.

And, now approaching 4 months, has a hole appearing in the same place on the blue eyed mare. If the hole develops at the mask’s “point of the eye”, exactly what UV protection am I getting for the eyes? With the exception of the new horse, I’ve had the others for years.

They have not ever worn their other masks out like this. They all have solo turnout. So, they aren’t doing it to each other. I love the idea of this mask. But, the quality is lacking in the construction to reinforce that point of the eye.

My one mare used to destroy fly masks when I first got her. She went through 2 different fly masks in a week before I tried this. She has been wearing this fly mask for 2 years now and it’s held up phenomenally.

She even got it caught in a fence gate and tore the nose off and there was hardly a blemish in the nose. I just got another one of these for my other horse who is In a pasture with friends who love to chew and I am not worried what so ever about it getting ruined.

They are very breathable and the colors are easy to see through and they stay off the eyes super well. I have never had a problem with these masks and have no complaints.

Pattern has changed and is longer than expected. I have used the same size in the past, and it fit my donkeys really well. It is now too long for the donkey faces.

I really like Farnam’s SuperMask fly mask and have used them for years. This version (SuperMaskII) is sturdy and well designed. I miss the bronze and black color and the option for Arabian size- but this fly mask has the same and even better protection.

I got this mask to see if it would “take the edge off” for my cribbing ottb. Unfortunately, it didn’t do too much there. BUT to my surprise, it DID make him a lot more focused under saddle. He’s pretty cool in general, no funny business, but it’s pretty cool to see him at another level.

It’s a nice tool to have if I need it.

I accidently chose click and collect instead of delivery, which is a problem for me since I am in Victoria. However, Southern Sport Horses immeadiately saw the issue and texted me not long after the purchase, asking me if I’d like it to be delivered.

They are super on top of customer satisfaction, would 100% recommend, especially to those who love LeMiuex products at a better price then everywhere else I’ve shopped! Shops like these give everyday riders (and uni students with not a lot of money) access to quality brands that would otherwise be outside of their price range.

I really only use this in the jumper ring, but it’s held up well in the 3 years I’ve had it. It sits in my locker a lot, and the wire in the black part bends a bit and it’s hard to put back, but it’s not noticeable.

The ears are a bit large on my 14’2hh Quarter Horse/Welsh. wouldn’t recommend for people with ponies or horses with small ears. Other than that it’s fantastic!! Easy to clean, and looks amazing!.

LeMieux bonnets are the best fit I’ve found for both my boys. They don’t have exceptionally small or large ears. And the full size fits their ears perfectly! As we’ve had issues of full/large being too big in the past despite it being their correct size.

These bonnets hold up really well, I have six of them! And one of the newer design ones (Blackcurrant) which is actually even better! I use one of these bonnets every time I ride and that even includes just riding around the paddock bareback.

These are wonderfully made and so beautiful. They are a great piece but run a little small, they would be fine for a thoroughbred, but a bit small on my 17hh warmblood.

The best mask I have ever brought, Medium size fits my 13. 2 cob and 15,2 Connie really well. Purchasing the mask with the nose piece is great but don’t bother purchasing the fringe as it easy breaks and I don’t think its worth the money.

My connie suffers from sweet itch so the padding around the poll and nose did rub some of her hair off but it didn’t cause any more irritation and certainly no broken skin.

I bought this eye mask after my horse got a small cancer in his eye where the third eyelid was removed completely. I wish I had known about the damage of UV prior and I would have purchased one years ago.

However not wanting to have the same problem with the other eye I bought one anyway and it has given brilliant protection against dirt and flies while the eye has been healing and my horse is wearing it all the time except at night now.

we had to buy a large cos his head is big but we did have to cut the ears as they were too big and on one occasion the mask was pulled off because the floppy ears got caught on some brambles. The face part is strong and holds away from the face and eyes which is great and we did detach the nose part because it was too long and not needed.

i love the product but i’ve bought two now and both colors are much more bright and not pastel at all. i got the lime green and lavender and got more of a neon green and periwinkle blue. i still enjoy them just a little confused.
