There are many different types of flooring that can be used for a whole house. Some of the most popular options include hardwood, laminate, tile, and carpet. Each type of flooring has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it is important to choose the right one for your home.
Hardwood floors are classic and elegant, but they require regular maintenance and can be scratched or dented easily. Laminate floors are more durable and easy to care for, but they may not have the same look and feel as hardwood.
Tile floors are easy to clean and maintain, but they can be cold and hard on the feet. Carpet is cozy and comfortable, but it can be stained easily and is not as durable as other options.

For longer than I care to admit I’ve had a second floor bathroom that needed some serious updating. Bit by bit I’ve worked on it but the flooring has kind of eluded me, until now. The décor in my bathroom is fishing themed and I’ve struggled to find something that would match and be easy enough to install without a professional.
The Harvest Moon Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring in the color Mineral Chestnut from Shaw Flooring was exactly what I had been looking for. Package Contents: 12 vinyl planks that measure 48-1/4” long by 7-3/8” wide.
Note, the box is HEAVY! Color/Style: I love the Mineral Chestnut color! It’s grayish with hints of brown and was completely perfect for the room I was working on and its décor. The wood grain pattern is really nice but it does take time to match things up side/side and end/end.
Instructions: No printed instructions. A QR code on the box takes you to the maker’s website where it has a list of instructions for various flooring models. Those instructions were fairly straightforward and even give you a list of tools needed.
Due to the difficulty of the room I was working in I did have to find some Youtube type videos to help solve some problem spots. Installation: It’s pretty much as easy as stated. Just place the planks and snap each one into place.
But. if you have an awkward shaped room, an unlevel floor, uneven walls, have to work around existing large furniture, or like me you have all of that, it can get a little complicated. Some things to note: Check each plank for damage.
Measure, measure, measure! Pay very close attention to orientation of both plank and furniture when trimming the planks. Keep the lines you intend to trim off STRAIGHT and don’t trim the planks too narrowly.
Going around corners and through door frames can be tricky but it can be done with a little ingenuity and a lot of patience. Be careful with the rubber lip that clicks the planks into place as it is designed to be trimmed off as needed and can break off accidentally.
Don’t put too much pressure on short plank ends when tapping them into place. Wear/Use: When you look at the planks they seem a little thin but they are surprisingly strong and comfortable to walk on.
They are not exactly the warmest on bare feet in the middle of the night but I fixed that with a couple of bathmats. I have accidentally dropped a couple of things and it has been scratch/dent resistant with smaller/lighter items, only one tool caused a problem.
As time goes by we will see how the wood grain ‘sticker’ layer holds up to repeated foot traffic. Cleaning: It’s super easy to clean the waterproof flooring once it is in place, just a dust mop for the most part.
In fact, the pencil lines I drew on while measuring took just a quick rub of my thumb and they were gone. Overall: I am really happy with how the Harvest Moon Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring looks and how much of a difference it made in my bathroom.
It’s like a whole new room in there! With some tools and a few skills it’s a fairly easy DIY project that nearly anyone can do themselves. When all was said and done I used close to 2-1/2 boxes to transform a room and I am proud to say that, with some help from my dad I did the work myself.
This Shaw Harvest Moon Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring was definitely love at first sight! I chose the color Mineral Chestnut because of the absolutely gorgeous color and grain pattern on the planks! The color looks very close to how it does online and I’d call it a greige color for sure! I really love the color a lot! Each plank also has a slight texture to it, so it really has a real wood look and feel compared to other vinyl flooring I’ve seen before.
The pieces have a sort of matte look as well, which I also like because it makes these seem non slippery, making them even more perfect for wet areas like bathrooms or kitchens. We installed these in our master bathroom and it really gave the room a whole new look! The flooring was easy to snap together and they fit together really well without any overly obvious seams in between each plank.
I love that these are 100% waterproof and have a built in attached acoustical pad on the back, however, we still installed an extra piece of underflooring underneath for extra padding (this is not necessary, just personal preference.
) This flooring looks so good and feels amazing! All our family and friends compliment us on how great it looks and we’d definitely use this brand again!.
I installed this flooring in our camper living room area. It was fairly easy to install and looks great. The built-in pad makes it nice to walk on without having to have an underlayment. The only issue you might run into, is that it has to be perfectly flat, or there will be some issues with getting it to match up correctly.
I noticed that in a unlevel spot in our camper. The board kept wanting to pop out of place. I used a industrial glue on that part to keep it in place and it worked well. It looks just like wood, and is waterproof which is great for our camper.
It was easy to cut and work with for the most part. I would recommend this for any solid level flooring surface that you want to add a great look to. It seems like it will be durable and last for a long time.
In my pictures I hadn’t installed quarter round yet but it’s still looks great.

I had this flooring installed last summer and was looking for additional material to extend it into the kitchen. Unfortunately, our local supplier was no longer carrying the brand. I had never used build.
com previously, but I decided to take a chance due to the great price. It arrived in a couple days as promised! All of the boxes were in excellent condition. I highly recommend the flooring as it is durable and easy to clean.
I would definitely use build. com in the future as well!.
The floor looks and feels great. Gives the room slightly extra height compared to the laminate floor we had there before. It is a glue down floor, however, which we didn’t realize when we first purchased it (not a floating / click floor).
Select Surfaces Auburn Oak Rigid Core Vinyl Plank flooring offers the beauty of real hardwood with the simplicity of click installation. Auburn Oak is characterized by its intricate detail and warm, dark brown hues.
This flooring will make any space feel modern, yet cozy. This item comes with an attached foam backer and requires no additional underlayment, making this an ideal DIY product. This flooring is waterproof and does not require much maintenance, which is why it is perfect for any room in the house including kitchens, bathrooms, and basements.
It is also Floor – Score certified for low VOC emissions and healthier indoor air quality. – What’s Vinyl Flooring? Vinyl flooring is a synthetic material that comes in tile, sheet, and plank forms. Its bottom layer is typically calcium carbonate which is then covered with PVC along with a plasticizer.
The material is then printed, embossed, and coated with a wear layer. Vinyl flooring is economical, water-resistant, and versatile. It’s popular for placing in bathrooms and kitchens. – What’s the Difference Between Vinyl Flooring and Laminate Flooring? With advancements in technology, the appearance of vinyl and laminate flooring greatly resemble that of real wood, stone, and tile, but there are still differences.
The laminate core board is typically made with high-density fiberboard (HDF). HDF is made from wood fiber extracted from chips and pulped wood, whereas vinyl flooring is 100% synthetic. The thickness of vinyl may range between 1.
2mm to 12mm while laminate can be from 6mm to 15mm. When it comes to water resistance, vinyl flooring is completely waterproof. Traditionally, laminate has been known to absorb water and swell easily.
But special construction technology has improved the laminate’s core layer substantially, making some products waterproof for 24 hours. – Types of Vinyl Flooring – Sheet: Comes in a single roll that’s typically 6′ to 12′ wide.
Since it limits the number of seams during installation, this type of flooring is ideal for bathrooms and kitchens. It can be laid loosely over subflooring or glued down. – Plank: Vinyl plank flooring resembles hardwood floors.
They’re economical and provide stain- and water-resistance – Tile: Vinyl tile typically comes in individual squares and in various sizes. When assembled, they take on the appearance of stone flooring.
These tiles can be arranged to make unique patterns and are also easier to replace when damaged – Vinyl Floor Surface Coatings – Vinyl flooring is constructed with different wear layer surfaces. A no-wax surface is ideal for light traffic areas and offers resistance to stains.
Flooring layered with urethane is more durable, easy to maintain, and resistant to scratches along with scuffs. Enhanced urethane vinyl flooring offers the highest protection and can hold up to heavy traffic.
– Why Choose Select Surfaces Auburn Oak Vinyl Plank Flooring? Besides giving a space warmth and rich color, Select Surfaces Auburn Oak Vinyl Plank Flooring is completely waterproof. It offers the look of real hardwood and is simple to install due to its click locking system.
This flooring doesn’t require an underlayment and will hide small subfloor imperfections. It’s resistant to stains, making maintenance a breeze. Terrific for bathrooms, kitchens, and basements in the home, this luxury vinyl flooring can also be installed in commercial settings.
InstallationWhen installing your vinyl flooring, it should be placed on a solid, flat surface. It’s recommended that you purchase extra materials to compensate for waste. Before the installation of the vinyl flooring, the subfloor needs to be properly prepared.
An expansion gap should be left around the perimeter of a room to compensate for the natural contraction of the planks due to seasonal temperatures. The flooring should also be mixed and matched from different packages to reduce shade variations.
This collection offers unique and innovative visuals on a vinyl that enhances durability. The rigid core features special top/bottom layers for stability and is made from a high-density composition for extra rigidity, providing superior impact and dent resistance.
This series is recommended for both commercial and residential use, and can be installed in high-moisture and high-traffic areas. All decors in the COREtec Pro Plus Collection feature the patented COREtec technology.
Since COREtec is 100% waterproof, COREtec Pro Plus floors can be installed in wet areas and will never swell when exposed to water. COREtec is inert and dimensionally stable; it will not expand or contract under normal conditions.
Further, COREtec never needs expansion strips in large rooms. Each COREtec Pro Plus plank or tile has an attached cork underlayment for a quieter, warmer vinyl floor that is naturally resistant to odor causing mold and mildew.
Modern and spacious. A light grey wire-brush serves as the perfect canvas for almost any contemporary space. Samples are 12 inch cut pieces from planks. Good for inspecting the wear layer, texture, and color.
I’d pick 5 stars and say the color was what I expected on all of the samples. We really like the samples. It helps a lot to have larger pieces to consider structure and color – we looked at 5 colors and both sizes – I’ll address all of them.
The structure is more substantial than many we’ve looked at. The embossing matching the grain is very well done and looks realistic from many angles and in various lighting. We originally thought we might prefer Arbor but we’ve lightened up this house after moving in about 2 years ago.
My husband liked the color of Arbor but really didn’t like the high contrast of the darker floor. We also had a sample of Madiera which looks nice but was even darker. He doesn’t often have strong opinions on such things so when he does it carries some weight.
After looking at pictures of other installations and moving the samples all over our house to check with lighting, existing fixed decor and specific furniture pieces we settled on Sutton. We were both surprised how much we liked the two gray tones (Ashford and Arlo) and how good they looked in our house.
In the end, I preferred the warmer tones of Sutton and how well it worked with some of the other materials I like. We’ve enjoyed both light and dark floors in the past so it was a toss up going in. We are still working on plans for finishing our basement.
We may choose Arbor down there since the current plan is to have that part of the house use darker colors and be more of a man cave. We got samples in Arbor of both the signature and base sizes. We’re considering using the larger planks on our fairly open main floor and the base planks upstairs where there are bedrooms and more distinct spaces.
I was originally thinking of it more so that the scale worked better upstairs and reduced overall cost a bit. We found the difference in thickness could really work to our advantage. On the main floor we have heavier trimwork and more of a variety of flooring to remove so trim adjustments, leveling subfloor etc are expected and thicker planks help.
Upstairs we have a catwalk that is open on both sides. That one area makes any flooring that needs expansion a bit tricky (its carpet right now). The slightly thinner base planks will fit in the existing gap so that the floor level trim that connects to moldings on the outsides won’t have to be adjusted.
Not sure if that makes sense but it solved a weird issue we had run into. Still unsure which size might suit our eventual basement layout. Our reasons for considering LVP: We have big dogs, cats and kids.
Our existing hardwood gets a workout and the color isn’t really a favorite. We initially considered wood-look tile and hardwood (reg and engineered) but both have drawbacks. We didn’t want site-finishing – we moved out to do that before and it was a real pain.
It would be more difficult now. We also wanted to be able to work area by area so we could relocate furniture as we go. Since we’re planning to do the whole house, even closets, that’s an issue, it won’t all fit in the garage at one time to have a crew come in and just having people in these days is tricky.
We had various samples of prefinished wood floors and my husband absentmindedly used one as a coaster. After 1/2 hour the finish was ruined. So we checked a bunch of others. Even some really pricey floors didn’t perform well or they scratched really easily.
The ones that passed the coaster test weren’t really our favorites because their finish left them looking sort of fake. That led us to start over and consider more options. I didn’t want to transition to tile in the kitchen because of where the transition would be.
He wanted something more durable in the kitchen. We were at a bit of a stalemate. We had never liked laminate but we had put in a fairly inexpensive wood look vinyl plank in a windowless basement about 7 years back.
It was a good choice for the space, looked really good, performed pretty well and was surprisingly warmer underfoot than the carpet that had been there before. With all the advances in the past few years we though the newer LVP might be an option for the main living spaces.
That may be more than you requested as far as a review of color and features but those concerns are some of the factors that even led us to consider LVP. The base plank is a good size with really good features compared to others and was the initial size we were looking at overall in most types of flooring.
The larger plank sizes and thicker wear layer are compelling features for the signature planks. Having the option of the matching larger plank in the more open, heavier traffic, presents a really good option to fit the various spaces we have and still have it all work together nicely.
Ordered 2 samples each of Craftsman Nakan and Soho. I was able to see how great a product it is and which one would be better in our home. We love the narrow planks as they fit in better with our other original flooring.
They have a different sheen than the wood floors but they’re separated visually by a kitchen and dining area so we feel it will be a great choice. Loved the “try this flooring in your own room” online feature as that helped us confirm which one would look best.
Judging from the one plank, it appears to be a very smooth, matte, and realistic looking plank. The embossed look on the plank is also very good compared to others I have seen. I can’t tell from this plank how often the pattern repeats, which is a big deal for me.
While I have not made my decision yet about which flooring to use, this one is definitely in the top two.

Built a new house, wanted to go Eco friendly and found this flooring to fit in perfectly for our needs. Sadly after 15 months I couldn’t be more disappointed and my wife and I just wish we went with carpet.
Put down 1000 sq feet and spent thousands. We are sick over the situation. It was installed professionally exactly as Cali recommended. Concrete was fully cured for over 3 months, sealed and glued down with Tightbond products just as Cali recommended.
Humidity in the home is a constant 45% +/-2%. The floor has been cared for exactly as Cali recommended in care and maintenance guide. Many planks for whatever reason are making cracking noises when walking on them and we are now discovering they are coming loose from the floor.
When the sun shines in casting a shadow you can see every single plank that joins together with another is slightly cupping. Tapping on the floor where the cupping is occurring sound hollow, because it is no longer glued down.
Then there are the numerous white streaks appearing all over. Almost looks like someone took a white marker to my floor. You can see its under the finish of the floor, very weird. Lay a flashlight on the floor and you can push down on the but end of any plank and see the plank move up and down.
We NEVER HAVE worn shoes in our home, and have no pets with claws or kids that have damaged the floor in any way shape or form. There are SEVERAL places where the finish has Popped Off, for no reason leaving an unsightly mark as well.
Called Cali and was told NO touch up kit was available for our floor.

This was my sixth click type flooring installation and it was by far the most difficult. As in an order of magnitude harder. I had three helpers, each of whom has done at least 2 or 3 other floors and they all agreed with me.
The stuff looks great once it is down and I love that it is waterproof, but it is an uphill battle to get it down correctly. It has zero forgiveness, and I mean none. Everything must be lined up to the nearest millimeter.
Hints for install. The first row must be straight, as in you need a laser to make sure it is straight. We ended up screwing it down temporarily to hold it in place because you need a fair amount of force to connect the pieces and the first row would always move, especially if it was ripped row (so that you would not end up with a sliver at the other end of the room).
We removed the screws once done. The edges are fragile. We had two boxes where the edges were all bent upon delivery. Do not rest it on end when using. We had to do a bunch of thinking to make sure we used the ones up that had bent edges where they would not be seen or were being cut off.
You need way more than 5 percent extra, we had 10 and seriously just made it (no whole boards left) even though we were very careful to reuse pieces. You need at least three people. The boards are heavy and getting a full board clicked into place means one person at the butt end to line it up (again to the nearest half millimeter) and two more to hold the heavy board to angle it in.
There is no solid “click” like some boards. You have to literally get down and inspect every single seam to make sure there is not even a hint of the grey underside along it. Do not do this and you will be fighting to install the later rows.
If you do not check the butt seams for alignment you also can easily damage the ends. If you get to where you have have a seam and you need to put a long board across it and it simply will not go in, cut the initial board so the seam from the previous row is NOT in the middle of the full board.
That way you have less of a pivot point. It does easily snap when scored. Get a triangle and use it to do the scoring, then put the triangle down on the floor with the scored part overhanging and push.
It snaps cleanly. You then have to cut through the backing but that is easy. I would not recommend this for someone installing flooring for the first time, although I am please with it now that it is down.
Amazing, durable, easy to clean! I love it! We had replaced our floors twice in the last 8 months because the products we were laying down, despite having great reviews, kept cutting our children’s feet.
We found Cali and immediately we’re impressed by the quality of their samples. We laid down golden hour oak in their longboard line and two months in, our children’s feet are cut free! Also, they clean so easily and don’t show dirt/spills as easily as other brands.
We have four young children who are constantly “battling” their toys, so this floor has taken a beating and stood up great. I am more than satisfied with the product and service of this company and will sing their praises for the years to come.
Our flooring was only installed a few days ago, but so far we love it! We installed it on the entire first floor. It is seamless without needing any transitions. It’s beautiful and matches our house.
We have been careful about moving furniture, etc. but we have not noticed any scratches or other problems. People have commented that it is more comfortable to walk on than hardwood and other flooring.

Marmoleum may be heat welded with either a matching solid color, a multi-color rod or a contrasting color welding rod. Marmoleum Floor Finish provides a beautiful, long-lasting, protective finish for all Forbo linoleum floors.
Suitable for use on linoleum or any traditional vinyl floor covering, Floor finish makes cleaning easier and less frequent. Marmoleum Floor Cleaner is environmentally friendly and manufactured from renewable, non-toxic ingredients containing no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
Marmoleum Floor Cleaner leaves behind a fresh, clean fragrance. First of all, it is a four syllable word that is slang for marbleized linoleum. Made from linseed or flaxseed oil, natural pigments, limestone dust, wood fibers and resins and then pressed onto a jute backing it is a great alternative to vinyl flooring.
People who are sensitive to plastics and their off-gassing like it because it is not pvc or rubber and contains no acrylics. It also doesn’t require the use of volatile adhesives or contact cements to install it.
I ordered samples of Marmoleum and I heard that the color will be very different when the product arrives to be installed? There is definitely some truth there since all natural linoleum flooring that was made with flaxseed oil has a natural amber hue to it when it is first made.
When exposed to sunlight it’s color changes and it loses much of its amber hue. For instance, many of the blue colors will look green initially and when the amber-yellow cast fades they become the true blue color of the samples.
A lot of folks get totally freaked out by this but it is not necessary to get crazy and the color will definitely change over time. Are Marmoleum Click Tiles and Planks easy to install? When the product comes out of its boxes and is allowed to acclimate for 24 to 48 hours, it has become stable in its final dimensions and is ready to install.
Starting with one row against the long wall is an easy way to start. Once that row is complete and blocked into place, you can start to add complete rows by tipping them into place. No tools are necessary except maybe some wedges to hold them up at an angle prior to snapping into place.
It is important that the products finished surfaces touch each other perfectly before it is pressed down into place. While the general practice is slightly different than the official Forbo Marmoleum Installation Guide, few people have trouble installing this flooring.
Generally, a jigsaw can make all the cuts but a tablesaw, chop saw or handsaw may come in handy in different situations. Undercutting door jambs and trim and using shoe moldings at the perimeter will make for the most professional installation.
