20 Best Flooring For Leopard Gecko (2023 Updated)

Not a reptile at all, I know! I use this on the bottom floor of my chinchilla’s cage to sop up his urine. It’s perfect because it’s very light and small shavings, not big chunks like I would probably use for an adult snake.

It keeps the cage from needing to be cleaned every single day- instead, around 2 weeks is a good time to change it all out, and you can spot clean by grabbing up the wet spots and then replacing with more aspen shavings.

I also dump all the used bedding into my compost pile! Which is perfect since both urine and herbivore droppings are great for compost hahaha.

I love Zoo Med’s Aspen Snake Bedding! My four corn snakes seem to love it as well. They enjoy burrowing and hiding in it. I love that people are surprised that I have reptiles and they don’t notice a smell.

Clean up is so easy with this snake aspen. I recently had three 24qt bags and still bought three more, of the same size, while they are on sale. I now have a good back up supply for my two 40g, one 20g and the 10g enclosures.

I have tried other brands in the past but this last year found this and Chewy’s deals and am happy to benefit, as well as my snakes 🙂 For those wondering about the amount to use for your enclosure. It is up to you and your individual snakes.

I personally like to provide at least two inches thick layers of substrate. I also provide two water dishes per enclosure, several hides and a lot of fake greens, but their very favorite seems to be the hammocks and bridges.

Although a ball python should have reasonably high humidity about 60% consistently, this product doesnt allow for it to really be wet without issues its not made for humid settings. With that said ive found away ar in und this as my ball python was used to this and will go off feed on anything else which ive tried it all.

Anyway providing either a humid hide or doing what i do will suffice. I use aspen on his hot side (since putting the moist substrate on his hot side would dry out to quick anyway this method works great).

I put forest floor on his cool side, which holds a good humidity throughout his enclosure about 55% which is good but i think hed rather higher as i occasionally get stuck sheds. I just soak him now a few times during his shed which has been working well for him.

I never had an issue with mold. I also dont leave it in there for too long about a month n obv spot clean in between full cleanouts. This has kept my snake happy. My other snake n is very happy on just coco husk which is way easier to keep moist n doesnt seem to mold or smell mildewy is any way in between clean outs usually i get a solid 6 weeks before i feel the need to clean out n can prob go longer, but like a clean environment for my animal.

He sheds perfectly each time. If ur ball python is good on forest floor or coco husk or u have a new animal put him on one of those 2 n u will be gtg, they r the prefered substrate imo. The picture is a display of his tub with the 2 diff substrates.

DO NOT USE REPTILE CARPET FOR ANY REPTILE!! It is a breeding ground for bacteria and parasites and their claws can get snagged and rip off if feisty enough ans not trimmed correctly just before the quick.

If you love your reptile and want them to live a happy healthy life without the stress of getting sick you will not use this awful reptile bacteria and parasite breeding plastic fibrous carpet. Why it is still sold is beyond me but my guess is to fill the vets pockets.

Coccidia is also a nightmare to get rid of once it starts to multiply and that is the main parasite that comes to mind with bearded dragons. It’s just not worth the risk unless your reptile is trained not to poop in their enclosure and their nails are trimmed right.

My guess is not quite so be safe rather than sorry. use newspaper, tile or industrial paper towels. Anything that can be swapped out for new and washed ASAP.

Our pup wore these boots a total of three times. In which the seams split and the tread separated from the bottom in two boots. My finger can completely go through the boot side to side. We went for about a total of 12 miles.

Very disappointed in that aspect. Easy to put on and take off. Love the reflective quality just upset they broke so quick. If the seam didn’t fail the rating would have been much higher.

I love that the coir is pre sorted, I hate how long the bricks take to sort out for leopard geckos! Brilliant enrichment for my little Lemon.

Bought this to decorate a Tangerine Honduran Milk snake terrarium with. Looks great, helps with humidity and the terrarium looks like a slice of the honduran rainforest now, snake seems to enjoy the new accents.

I’ve used this with my leopard gecko for over a year now and it looks fantastic! There is some sand that falls off initially, but it does not leave the mat bare like some reviews say. It looks really good and doesn’t run any risk of impaction like loose substrates can or any risk of toes or chins snagging like on a regular carpet.

The main drawback is definitely that it is nearly impossible to clean! My gecko is nice enough to poop all in one corner so it wasn’t too difficult to chip off once it dried, but it is a pain! So other than having to replace it after a while when it gets too dirty, I have no complaints with this product!.

I absolutely would recommend this stuff. It gives a nice aesthetic value to any setup, and really helps complete the look for those looking to bring the desert into their homes. Has an added side benefit of serving as a natural file for your reptile’s claws.

Comes in several very useable sizes, and it is reusable. It can even be lightly washed under low water pressure to keep it clean. 5 star product and Chewy has very competitive prices. Only thing I would say is shipping can take a few days so order a week ahead if you know you’ll need it.

The sand on this mat was really loose and the chunks coming off just from opening the box were large pebble sized. If your dragon were to eat that they could get an awful impaction. I don’t recommend this product for bearded dragons even though it appears in the bearded dragon search listings.

I don’t know if it’d be beneficial to any other reptiles, I only own and am educated on bearded dragons. Newspaper or a mat is much better and safer for your dragon as long as you are a good pet owner and keep the tank cleaned regularly.

This substrate held too much humidity. I was afraid the snakes would end up with respiratory problems. St substrate looked a lot like potting soil to me. It was very fine. It stayed all over the snakes because the humidity and substrate being so fine didn’t mix well at all.

BUT I tried to fill part of the way with Aspen and the other part coconut husk and the humidity was better.

So the bedding is very good, but I would not use it for animals who require very damp environments. It holds the water it seems to never evaporate. Well I learned from that decided its best for dry climate animals! Otherwise it’s a great product.

(This tank has been since changed out).

It’s a pain in the butt to decompress. It did save me from a huge cage flood though from a rouge dripper. I put the brick in my soil and it soaked up all the water. I’d recommend this for a basic substrate that gets regular cleanings.

1000% improvement on my small 2nd story wood deck. High quality, made in Sweden, lovely colors. Barefoot feels good but when the sun is on it, you’ll need flip-flops, as it does get hot, cools quickly.

For clean cut edges my son cut mine with a PVC blade on a circular table saw. I have graphite gray. Sand color was sold out. But the graphite shows no dirt or dust.

A little bit thinner than I thought it would be. I did look at dimensions before purchasing. but you can feel every little seam underneath them when installed. Our covered patio area is made up of large concrete squares.

We installed the tiles on top of them. You can feel where each concrete square connects to one another under the tiles.

Good looking plastic. Extremely easy to click together and take apart if a mistake is made, but also sturdy and solid- it doesn’t make noise against concrete floors when walked on. The pattern can give a bit of a dizzy vibe in large areas- I plan on adding a rug.

Overall great quality and purchase.

I bought this based off of the review of the others here. Since I have many reptiles and most of them are snakes, I buy in bulk. Especially when I haven’t been able to find my usual Eco Earth ANYWHERE.

not even online. I love my Eco Earth and was excited at the prospect of this being even better! And with the problem I had been having finding coconut substrate, I didn’t want this one to be the next one targeted.

I ordered enough to do each tank 2 times. And wouldn’t you know. I hate it. It is dryer than Eco Earth. I expected it to be dry as stated and was prepared to put water in it. but you have to put SO. MUCH.

WATER. It is UNREAL how much you have to saturate this stuff for it to hold moisture any amount of time. And I disagree that its less dusty than Eco Earth. I don’t understand that one in the slightest.

Maybe its just me. I am picky when it comes to my reptiles. After I finish this up I will be sticking with my Eco Earth.

First time buying. It seems to have plastic pieces in it. Like small plastic chunks and small strips of plastic bag. I typically use EcoEarth but that has been extremely hard to find in 24quart bags.

Bought this instead for my tortoise. It is really dry. There is no moisture. It is not fine like EcoEarth; it is more like dry, clumpy, long cut grass.

I have used and loved Eco Earth for so long, but I didn’t like how dusty it was. It would get all over the tracks of the doors and floor when I would open the tank, too. I figured I’d try something different this time.

I’m SO glad I got Reptile Prime. This stuff is amazing! It’s soft and fluffy, doesn’t get compacted and super easy for her to dig around. Easy to clean, absorbent, stays together, man this is the stuff! This is 100% worth every penny! OH, I used to use 4x 24qt bags of Eco Earth in my terrarium, now I only need to use 2 because of how filling and “fluffy” this stuff is.

I think my snake loves her new bedding, too.

I bought this as a cheaper replacement for sand, and it’s a wonderful product. In fact, for my purposes, it works out much better than sand. I could buy sand at a home improvement shop and get much more for less money, but I just don’t need 50 pounds of sand, especially considering that sand probably would be damp, need drying out before use, be too large to keep in my home, and when dry, it would probably produce considerable dust as well.

This product, intended for use with small reptilian pets, is already clean, dry and dust free, so that’s a major plus over a large quantity of sand. The amount of product is perfect as well — any hobbyist (I bought mine to use as ‘earth’ on bases for wargaming miniatures and other diorama and terrain projects) can keep this amount near their work area (unlike a 50+ pound bag of sand), and unless I’m mistaken, it’s the same thing some companies sell as ‘railroad ballast,’ although this was cheaper by far.

It’s sold as five dry quarts and I’d guess its weight at about ten pounds, and it comes in a plastic bag about 1 foot tall, 7 inches wide and 4 or 5 inches thick (depending on how it’s settled). It’s pretty much an exact match for the Woodland Scenics medium ballast product (maybe right in between their fine and medium sizes), but the WS 32oz shaker jars at Home Essentials Direct sell for ablout twice the price of this, and this bag contains as much product as four or five of those.

Five times as much for half the price, and the same thing to boot? I am definitely a happy customer! I’m sure it’s perfect for our little wriggling and burrowing pets too, since that’s its intended purpose, but it’s also perfect for my hobbying.

After all, it’s the same thing I’ve used for years with great success, and I couldn’t be happier to get so much at such a great price (six bucks and change, which is about the same as the price as the quite small bags of brown ballast from WS, much less the large shaker bottles).

For wargaming hobbyists needing something like sand for basing miniatures, this is a huge bargain. This one bag probably would cover an entire 4′ x 8′ sheet of plywood (the size of the wargaming tabletops on which I enter battle) with considerable leftovers, or if used just for bases, almost certainly last me the rest of my hobbying life.

😉 As is the case with the normal brown ballast from WS, white glue and acrylic paints (as well as washes from Vallejo, Citadel and Army Painter) work great, although some may like the color exactly as is.

I’m really glad to have discovered this, and I highly recommend it for tabletop wargaming and military miniatures hobbyists.

I use about half a bag for a 20g long tank. I was concerned that walnut shells would be too rough and hurt my leopard gecko’s belly, but the grains aren’t cut sharp and it’s actually quite soft. My leopard gecko loves to lie in this stuff.

Before when he was on aspen, he slept mostly in his cave, but since I’ve started using this stuff he sleeps out in the open more often than in the cave. He also loves digging in it. He makes an absolute mess.

As with all loose substrate, I don’t feed him on it directly to avoid impaction. I put his worms and roaches in a shallow dish, and feed him crickets mostly by hand. Occasionally he gets some in his mouth, but I keep an eye on him and he poops it right out.

You have to make sure your lizard is getting enough water and heat, otherwise they can even become impacted from too many mealworms. Don’t put unhealthy or juvenile lizards on loose substrate. My other leopard gecko, who can’t see very well and always misses at least two times before she manages to get a worm in her mouth, is on reptile carpet, otherwise she’d be eating more substrate than her actual food.

I feel that this is much better than aspen, because the grains are much smaller and can’t hurt their insides if they ingest it. The only problem I have with this is that my leopard gecko kicks it into his water bowl and it stains it red.

Other than that, this substrate is great.

So the price is great. Less expensive than the local Petco. I don’t have a lizard. I use it as media to tumble once fired brass from the range. It cleans faster and better than corn cob media. It cleans the inside of cases where the corn cob doesn’t seem to.

It does create more dust than the corn cob. (not a big thing though) I do still use the corn cob media however to polish the brass since this walnut cleans but doesn’t polish as well as the corn cob media.

I can use this first then later the corn cob media with brass polish added. I’ve even mixed the two which works well and saves a step. Don’t deprime the cases beforehand, just leave them in and tumble first.

I can use this stuff over and over again. The best thing is that I don’t wear out the corn cob media very fast at all since most of the tumbling is done with walnut. Just my experience. I found this tip on some reloading sites.

I use this for my orchids. It’s nice and chunky, way better than some other brands. I like that it’s loose substrate. I tried the brick from this brand and the quality is the same but it’s such a pain to use.

(It doesn’t magically come apart when soaked in water. ) I love how coconut husk doesn’t stink when wet like bark does. It also isn’t as attractive to gnats and fruit flies. I also like how there is a clear color difference between wet and dry coconut husk.

I imagine this would be beneficial for detecting pet urine if that’s what I was using it for. Nice size bags and a reasonable price. Also, it’s nice and soft and fluffy. I have doves trying to nest in one of my orchid baskets.

My daughter and I prepared for weeks before purchasing her Pacman frog. The terrarium was set-up, succulents were planted, temperature and humidity were spot on, even the mealworms were alive and waiting.

My daughter told me that a Pacman frog is about as big as my palm, and to make sure that I purchase substate large enough so that he/she can borrow. Which I did, and substrate was soaked, spread and misted each day until our new friend arrived.

Turns out that a Pacman will grow to be the size of the palm of my hand!! Lol! Our gal or guy was only about 3/4” cube! New substrate ordered!! We’ll save the remaining bricks for when our frog is much bigger!.

I use this for my leopard geckos humid hide. He seems to really like it and it holds the moisture in really well. It’s not much to look at but it works well with a naturalistic terrarium. I keep it in between the warm and cool side of the setup and it seems to stay a comfortable temperature for my little dude.

I like these hides a lot. I have a few smalls and they are great, sturdy and easy to clean. I just got my first medium for my ball python that’s outgrown the small and it’s overall as good EXCEPT I think that the size of the opening should have been made larger also?.

my bp fits fantastic in the hide itself but just does get through the opening almost the same as with the small and it’s more narrow in way. meaning I’m going to have to get him a new one before he even actually outgrows this one.

Absolutely fantastic substrate! I didn’t think it’d do many vivs but it’s comfortably filled 6 with enough substrate for the snakes to be nice and happy. It’s completely dust free which is fantastic since the dust bothers my nose, and the snakes love burrowing in it.

Definitely buying this again, very happy.

My corn snake does quite well with this ! No heating pad needed. The day nite lights are perfect .

48x24x16 (2) 4×2 Mediterranean (1) spacer) So set up was pretty easy since we had ordered it pretty much assembled which I highly recommend because so many parts and pieces. (Note) my only complaint is that comes with zero instructions which was a little intimidating) however recommended videos very helpful in the steps to properly.

We are adding a additional habit to the top picture doesn’t include) I do recommend if you are stacking to get the 4×2 spacer just makes it so much more accessible for the lights and the heating lamp so they do not have to go inside the cage and to worry about your friend getting caught up in that it took a lot of stress off of us just to go ahead and get another spacer for the middle.

(on to the review)Our one-year-old leopard gecko since moving in about two weeks ago is so much more active super happy it’s literally like night and day, what a new habitat can do for a friend. He’s like a different reptile all together!! I love the fact that the door slides and we are able to stick our hand in,he can just go ahead and climb up on you and walk right out.

I did my floors in April of 2019 I couldn’t have asked for a better flooring system. I have a large dog who plays hard and not one scratch! Water from the drinking bowl everywhere and no problem. I also sell this at the store I work in and I can now tell everyone with confidence how beautiful and wear resistance this flooring is.
