20 Best Flies For Winter Trout (2023 Updated)

Fascinating spinner with a continuous slow spin that is not heavy, but slowly sinks. The pulsing revolution of the blade is seemingly better than most spinners since you can vary this quite slow or fast, whereas most spinners must be retrieved quickly for the revolving blade to prove successful.

Be prepared that the small treble hook can be time consuming to unhook fish. And use only pliers not your fingers. It is a bit on the small side but anything that goes for this will definitely be hooked.

If you dont catch fish on Joe’s, theyre not biting!!! I took a 21 inch large mouth on a Joe’s first cast after hitting the waters with the standard bass lures. In fact wife and I both started using them with great results.

These are our goto lures on new water bodies with unknown specimens. Nailed a 14. 5 inch black crappie on them the following week. Be warned, withthe two hook combo you might want to use some tools to retrieve your fly cause theyre sharp and wont let go!!.

These things catch trout and panfish. They mKe bigger ones for bass also. They have stinger trebble hooks that act like a grappler hook locking your fish in place with the single hook. This is great for short striking fish esp timid panfish or cold weather trout.

I have been using them for about two or three years now. They are hard to find on the shelves, the Cricket color is best, all other colors are IFFY. Twitch the pole tip, and they go sideways and in a circle at the same time.

too bad the teeth of the fish you catch eats up the covering. I still used them until too much metal was showing. I even put Berkley power scent on them. Big fast action or slow, both work well.

These little things are quite amazing. I don’t know what kind of fish crack is used in these, but its high quality stuff. Big blues even suck these down. works on almost all types of fish. MY ONLY COMPLAINT.

wheres the 50 PACK!!! I can rig them myself.

The Atomic tube in grasshopper color is the best lure I have used for multi-species catches, period ! A real crappie killer that also works great for smallmouth bass and walleyes !

I fish for winter trout in a public stocked city lake, which has muck and filamentous algae (green slime) on the bottom; this bait floats well on a light hook, very visible no mess or bad smell. I used a split shot on 4# line to keep it floating about a foot off the bottom out of the ‘slime’.

If it doesn’t float add a little more bait or use a lighter Aberdeen hook. I still use crawlers, as they seem to catch slightly bigger fish, but for action you can’t beat this. Stores easily, eliminates the need for marsh mellows, cheese, corn, liver and other stuff that goes bad and stinks.

This bait doesn’t smell as strong as other Berkley products I’ve used, worms, minnows and shrimp. I’ve actually re-used if from fish I’ve cleaned and still caught fish, LOL!.

Bought this after seeing people using it online with good luck. I dont know if I was given a bottle that has been in the warehouse for a long time or what, but no matter how I work it, it will not stay on the hook after going into the water.

I have not caught a thing on this. I’m contemplating buying a bottle from Walmart and seeing if I have the same issues or not.

I’ve used this for so long I can’t remember when I started. I’ve caught trout up to 8 or so pounds. I always use Rainbow at the beginning and it always produces fish. Over the years I’ve caught more than 1000 trout on this bait.

Most recently a 2 pound and a 3 pound 10 ounce Rainbow on Rainbow Power Bait.

I bought this to replace the $5. 99 Chinese line I got on eBay, thinking it would be an upgrade. Long story short, the less than half price Chinese stuff flow thru the guide much easier and cast further.

I am pretty disenchanted with Scientific Angler.

Nice sinking fly line for stripping streamers when hunting fall trout in stillwaters on the tube. Stays soft in freezing temps, but coils alot.

This line is great! It is your basic pvc coated fly line. Good for small streams and medium creeks.

This review is just until I get an update/message from the seller. I got my order today, but it only included the first box of the two box set. Not much of a value of you only get half the flies you were expecting.

I’m very happy with the quality and assortment of flies–it’s approximately half dry and half nymphs, with a little bit of streamers and terrestrials thrown in. I’m a beginner fly fisherman, and it certainly gives you a lot of usable flies fast.

A great, cheaper way to bolster your collection, and they’re made in the USA! Also, the personal attention and concern from Ventures was much appreciated. I’m trying to get my dad and brother into it, so I’ll definitely be buying more sets of these in the future! For the price, quality, and service, these can’t be beat.

Last spring, I decided to try out fly fishing. I started to like it so I ordered this product, so I’d have many types of flies to try out as I wasn’t sure what flies I needed. With this assortment, I’ve caught many panfish and bass in southeast Texas and some trout in the up in the Rockies.

The quality of the flies is surprising, however, they do break down after a few good fighting fish get hooked on them, though I believe this is the case with most flies anyway. In conclusion, these are great flies for the price and excellent for getting into fly fishing.

Do the math. 122 flies for $84 is $. 68 a piece. THAT’S CHEAP! Being a fly fishermen for over 50 years I was quite skeptical. Been down this road before and was NOT happy. So far, Ventures has gained an extremely satisfied customer! The quality of the Ventures flies are very good.

At least the patterns. I will come back and update after I fish them some? See how they stand up and if the materials are good? THANKS VENTURES!.

I’ve been fishing these rogues most of my life. I live in north Louisiana and back in the late 80’s I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Jack Smithwick. He used to have his shop in Shreveport. Best year round bait, but really shows off in spring and early summer.

I bought a few of these and also bought some of the shallow divers (see my review). I had the same issue with these that I did with the shallow divers. The spoons/bills were loose and I was unable to adjust them and keep them snug.

The lures tracked way off to the left and/or right on retrieve. I’ve been fishing for a long time, I know how to adjust the bill/spoon on the front of lipped cranks/stickbaits to make it track right or to make it do “funny” stuff on purpose.

I REALLY liked the colors and variety. Too bad for me. Perhaps the newer lures have some defects or maybe I just ran into a whole bunch of lemons. Reading all the other reviews seems nobody is having any major issues.

Just know if you try these and they don’t work, BPS will refund your money. I had no issues at the C. S. Counter and never do. BPS Cincy has a great staff, I am always treated well there.

I went to a local lake here in Colorado pretty much just to get out of the house. Most of the lake was unfishable due to a thin layer of ice covering most of the lake. I cast out the suspending model blue/silver with orange belly.

Pulled it down to depth and gave it a twitch, waited 15 seconds, then two twitches, 15 second pause, one twitch, and repeat. Painfully slow to do but the results were awesome. 4 16″-21″ bass in 2 hours.

I have lucky craft and megabass jerkbaits. This half priced jerkbait does a much better job triggering strikes in extremely cold water. Not that luke warm 48-50 degree water. Very durable and stock hooks have held up well.

If you don’t catch any fish on this, then they’re not biting. I caught 10 fish; 9 rainbow and 1 yellow perch today within 90 minutes. A fisherman introduced it to me several weeks ago and he was catching trout like it was no tomorrow.

I’ve been catching more fish by using Joe’s flies.

Would rate these over 5 stars if i could, BUY SOME!!.

Been fishing Pistol Petes for 20 plus years. They are dynamite. Have caught fish everywhere I’ve used them. Here’s the tip; tie a small swivel at the end of the leader and your tippet to that. Keeps your tippet from ‘spinning up’ when retrieving and will not effect your casting.

Can easily cast with a fly rod or a spinning rod with a bubble or sinker. I purchased a whole range of colors for different water conditions.

These are very effective for trout in lakes or slow streams. I prefer the ones with a feathery tail, as you can impart a realistic swimming motion by stripping the fly in. That combined with the flash from the blade makes for an enticing presentation.

Think of it as an improved wooly bugger. It works fine on fly rods and spinning gear.

Between the jointed and regular 2-3/4 flicker shad i may have all the colors. A few doubles as well, one is none and two is one. We have been using them for trolling trout. Work pretty good. A few different people have said replace the hooks.

I will get around to it. That is my only gripe, have lost a few fish so I will blame the lure not the angler. Good deal at $3-4.

I’ve used these side by side with the original flicker shad, and I think the original just works better. This works, it catches fish, it has the same reliable qualities of the original flicker shad, but I don’t think it works as well.

I keep a few in my box for the ‘just in case’ moment, but these are not my go to flicker shads. I feel like these catch more fishermen than fish. The action looks so good, and seeing your trolling rod pulse when this thing is in the water is so much fun, but it still never catches as many as an original flicker.

Was a the bait shop just lookin saw the purple fire tiger. said to myself as always if we’re a fish I’d hit that. next time out with my buddy started throwin it 2nd. Cast caught a smalll mouth. probably got 10 a missed few all day my buddy said get him 1 next out only lure we used all day crushed the smallies.

It is at a great price for the serious fly tier like me. See because I am a “professional” fly tier which basically means that the only thing that I do is tying flies for a living. The Loon Outdoors UV Fly Finish had came to me last month and now I have to order another bottle of hot green.

I rate it 9 out of 10 for the price, size and mailing service. Like what I had said since I will be needing another bottle I better get back to work.

I purchased the Loon thin resin and the Togens UV light. The resin works great. It says thin but it’s not runny so you can be quite precise with it. Great for chironomids. The Togens light works well for setting the resin.

Good quality with a strong output. Can’t beat the price either.

This product is easy to use and the applicator tips blow clear easily so that they will not be plugged the next time they are used. this is a big plus. This is the first time I have used a UV finish so my review should betaken as such.

I spoke with Gabe at Stillwater about a TFO Mangrove Coast 9wt, as I was looking for an easier casting 9 wt as compared to a couple of stiff-as-a-board 9wts that I currently use. I mentioned that I wanted a rod that I could feel load on the backcast, and be an easier casting rod overall.

We discussed the SA Amplitude Smooth Grand Slam vs a competitor’s standard saltwater WF9F line that I currently use on an Echo Boost Blue, and he suggested that I try the SA line. A few days after I received the rod I received the line.

After a short lawn casting session with the standard line, I changed reels to the SA Grand Slam. Immediately you could feel a difference in line speed. I was casting 40-60 ft without any effort, and could single haul in excess of 78′ (the limit of my lawn).

Accuracy was very good at all distances, plus it was much less effort to cast (translated as more fun). Then I put the SA line on my Echo Boost Blue. To keep the line speed up on the standard line on the BB I had to give a “punch” at the end of my false cast.

Once I loaded the SA, no such punch was needed. While the standard line was accurate as far as hitting my targets, the SA was just as accurate, and easier to cast longer. The most noticeable improvement was shooting line with a single haul, which again exceeded the length of my lawn.

While the change to the SA wasn’t as dramatic on the Boost Blue as the Mangrove Coast, it was still a significant improvement. I realize that lawn casting leaves something to be desired in comparison to on the water.

I plan to be redfishing over the next few weeks, and will update the review. In the meantime, I’ll be ordering SA Amplitude Smooth Grand Slam for the Echo Boost Blue as well.

Son and I both have Amplitude Infinity. Great line. Handles beautifully and we never feel like the line is letting us down at all. Handles a bit of power for distance and people often comment on what a nice line it is to use.

Top notch and definitely fishes better than I do! Definitely trust anything SA & Tom’s. Another great tip from Chris.

I’m brand new to fly fishing and I don’t know much about flies, but here’s my opinion. All of these are small dry flies, which is ok with me as a beginner. Some of them come apart a little too easily I think, but I’m not sure how much abuse a fly is supposed to take.

You get 50 of them, which is a good value considering that I’m losing quite a few of them due to improper casting and perhaps losing some in tall weeds behind me. Not keeping my cast high enough. Small fish have hit or pecked at all dozen of the flies I have used so far.

Mostly small bluegill and a couple small bass. 6 or 7 inches. So far, I’ve lost more flies than fish that I have caught.

This is a really good deal for $5. The flies themselves are nice, and at 20 cents apiece you can’t go wrong. And the case they come in is worth something all by itself. You don’t have to take the flies out and put them in some fly box, just grab them and go! The case is the perfect size for your vest pocket.

And when the flies are gone (hopefully after many catches!) you can use the case for other tiny tackle. Sure beats flies at $2 apiece!.

Has a nice variety of fly’s that will catch many species of fish.

This soft lure a proper killer for trout. Ive managed to catch this trout on my second cast. That was so cool and I didnt expected for anything like it. However, would be nice to have a least 3 lures in the pack instead of one.

Haven’t used it much but the times I have seemed to generate no interest. It could be other factors other than the lure but so far it just adds a nice option in the tackle box

I have caught fish on this lure every time I have used it. It is well-made, durable, wonderfully realistic and 1/10 ounce is just right for casting long distances on 4 lb or 6 lb line. I highly recommend it.

This Powerbait is so good that it might should be outlawed. I’m a firm believer in “catch and release,” so I catch trout with this bait, clean them, and then release them (after sprinkling them with salt, pepper, and corn meal) into 350 degree peanut oil.

These are mostly “stocked” trout, meaning that the majority of American fisherpersons pay for their (the trout) via fishing license/trout stamp fees. I ran into a flyfisherperson a few months ago at a nearby restaurant (he was wearing hip waders) and asked him how many trout he had caught that morning.

He got all upset and nastily replied that he was a strictly “catch and release” type. I replied, “I didn’t ask how many trout you kept, I just wanted to know how many you caught and released. ” This bait is really good stuff.

I promise you!.

Never review products, but this was wayyyyy too good to not give 5/5. Have caught salmon, steelhead, trout, bass, and panfish on these. If you’re fishing in a hole for 10 minutes and not getting anything, there’s probably nothing here.

If you can dead drift them properly (let them drift in the current naturally), you’re going to get a ton of fish if they’re there. I just wacky rig them and don’t use a bobber with one split shot about a foot up from the hook.

Might just be my personal experience, but found that the rainbow trout were more aggressive for the bait than brown trout, can catch 4″ rainbows with them but not that size browns. Doesn’t matter what size fish they are, again, caught a 5 lb coho with one and lost a 4 pound steelhead.

Sooooo good so if you’re not catching anything with them, you might not be using them properly or there’s no fish there. If going for trout. sometimes you have to drift them right to the edge of the log even though there’s a risk you could lose your rig, but it’s worth it.

They’ll dart out, take it, and dart back under. Definitely worth the price.

My friends near me on the same stream fished a different artificial worm and were crushing the trout. I couldn’t catch a cold. I know it’s not always the bait – there are lots of factors like where on the stream you’re fishing, weight, pool depth, conditions, etc.

but for me, they didn’t work like I hoped.

I went to Hagg lake in Oregon and fished near Boat Ramp A. There were 5 other fisherman fishing close to where I was fishing. I used half a crawler with a pink shrimp marsh mallow and caught my limit of trout (5) before noon.

The other 5 fisherman caught 1 fish. One fisherman caught 5 trout. Five fisherman caught 1 trout. You do the math!.

Used this bait a couple of times for about 12 hours total in a stocked pond and no trout yet. It looks and smells great but just not as good as Power Bait and mouse tails.

Cheaper replacement of the powerbait, and it works good for trout fishing.

First of all, I will not recommend these to my friends. if i did i would not out catch them every outing. Picked about 30 of these from a bargin bin for under a buck. many were the discontinued colors which are/were fish catching machines.

These things catch fish, in the spring and summer i placed these under a slip float next to a minnow with a float and the teaser won at a 5 to 1 ratio. both got a dab of the Berkley crappie attractant and the occasional bump.

The quality on these can be from one extreme to the other. Some can take hits from a days worth of good sized fish and then you have that brand new one that is destroyed after a tiny little gill hit.

Some have the tails that stay attached for those long casts and some fall off when the wind blows on them. which means a 3 for quality. the 4 for value is that these are expensive for just 3 soft bait lures.

If Berkley brought back the colors that catch fish, I would happily pay the current price point and give a 5 star overall. but until that happens I will be forced to search and scrounge for the good colors in bait shop bargin bins.

I’ve been using the atomic teaser jig for over 15 years now. I cast an retrieve them mostly but will straight line fish them even under a cork. just hope Berkley never stop selling them. I probably have 40 packs on hand with 30 of one color just incase.

Be nice if they were scented.

I tried these “Atomic Teaser” jigs out recently on a Crappie fishing trip and I was amazed at their effectiveness. I caught 5) large Crappies before my friend who was using a different jig even got a bite.

I get a lot of fish on the Pearl White 2 inch. Caught largemouth and white bass. Recently I got into some white bass and about the 8th one broke the back treble hook off. Since it was my last one I switched lures and didn’t have anymore luck.

So I ordered 3 more so I have some backups. I also have caught walleye and drum on it. Not so interested in the drum. lol. I have fished on a rod with up to 15 lb flourocarbon line on a 6′ 10″ rod. Works better on lighter line.

I get an excellent hookup ratio with this lure.

I bought these because my local stores were out of my go to lure. These looked similar to the other brand and were slightly cheaper. They out performed my favorite lure. I took them to a new lake far from home to fish for several species of fish I have never fished for.

I tied one on and that was the ticket. We caught three bass species and walleye on them. I shared one with another fisherman. These lures are hot!.

So I went shopping at cabelas and was looking at fishing stuff and my little brother was looking at the fish when I saw this lure and knew this was the one. That was two years ago in 2020 it’s 2022 now and yesterday I was looking through my garage and saw a cabrlas bag looked inside and saw the lure along with my little brothers glow bobber and my sick fish rubber lures but I grabbed the flicker shad and went inside to the news of the fact we were going to the lake so I packed up my fishing stuff and went as soon as I used that lure I knew I loved it it swam through the water Nicely and made the nice flicker sound.

So that’s why I recommend this lure to anyone looking for a bass lure, Thank you Berkley for the lure.

Great fly. A thatcher I was working with who does not fish recommended this fly and gave me one as his friend tied it. I was skeptical but sure enough it produced fish when other flies failed. It goes to show you can always learn no matter how unlikely the source!.

Not tried yet. The flies are well made and I expect good things after using the damsel kk01.
