Best Flashlight For Self Defense (2026 Updated)

I have several SF lights and the EDCL2-T (and EDCL1-T) has the most useful switch mechanism. It’s similar to the older L1 models. No need to cycle through different brightness levels – just soft press for low, and hard press for high.

Twist the tail cap to reach either mode. Note that the EDCL tail caps are not compatible with other E-series lights from SF. This light is great for running in the evening. Keep it on low for visibility to others, then hard press for the occasional coyote you may run into (not uncommon in my area).

Or for the more nefarious predators that roam the night.

I have over purchased Surefire products. 2 suppressors 6 x300 pistol lights, 4 scout 600, 2 scouts with IR capability and 1 scout 300. Also all kinds of accessories tailcaps etc. Surefire is never pleasant to contact it’s always someone else’s problem.

Had a issue with a modlite mod button flickering due to a ue tailcap contacted Surefire it’s modlites fault. What’s modlite do sends me a Surefire ue cap problem solved the cap was malfunctioning not the mod button.

Now I’ve contacted them about a scout 600 vampire failing we’ll see how this goes. I’ll only purchase modlites from now on customer service is 100x better.

I much prefer the tail button and tail twist controls on this SureFire EDCL2-T flashlight to the controls on of so many other brands of flashlights. I also like using ShureFire A123 batteries instead of rechargeable batteries.

This flashlight is worth the price. It’s rugged and dependable. It’s easy to use. No fussing. It just works.

For what it was designed for, it is an awesome light; small, lightweight, versatile, & durable. Was originally disappointed in the strength of the beam. (I’m used to lights with 350-500 lumens). But for discreet light that keeps you from “stumbling in the dark” it’s just right.

And it runs on readily available AA size batteries. The blue and red LEDs each have minimal night-vision disruption.

For anyone with a clue about what light you will need in the event of a SHTF light source this is the one to have. You won’t need or want a 1000 lume light you’ll need and want a 10 or 20 light just enough to light the trail in front of you.

This is the best bang for the buck light I have and love it. Strong clip to hold it on your tach belt or leg holster can aim it down to light the trail each of the 4 colors have 4 brightness settings that are easy and fast to set it’s water tight and even has the cool cable to hold the case bottom so you won’t lose it.

Def worth the money!.

Great hands free admin light, can see maps without lighting up half the county to do it. Red light cover is a nice bonus built in, engages with a quick slide.

As a retired police officer, I wish I’d had this little light decades ago. This is better than any three or four cell rechargeable flashlight I ever used in my professional life. I now live in a rural area, and this little gadget can cover my entire acre at night with ease, as well areas further out.

And they put out a good beam for a long time on the 3-AAA battery setup. Haven’t used the rechargeable system. Don’t need it.

I would definitely recommend this flashlight for anyone that needs to feel secure in their surroundings. I live in the woods, and when things go bump in the night, you need to see what is going on. This is a compact light, so it’s easy to carry in a purse or pocket.

I will be buying another to have in the car with me. When I got it, I realized that I didn’t have good batteries, but found some generic ones in the drawer. When I put them in, the light was strong, so I can imagine what I will have when I get the good batteries.

I have used this to look at the tree line at night, and you can really see things that I couldn’t see with my spotlight. I love that you can change the light settings to high, medium and low and can also focus or zoom in to a certain area.

There is also a strobe light and sos light for emergencies. It is made from a very heavy metal, which says that it can be run over or boiled or frozen without any damage. Naturally I didn’t try this, but it’s good to know that cold weather or an accidental drop shouldn’t damage it.

This is the brightest flashlight I have ever had and I have bought numerous lights and spotlights. This is by far the best! Pros: Bright, heavy duty, multiple features Cons: none.

Tough and compact with a sharp bright multi-function beam that explodes from grapefruit to wall size in a flash. Bottom rubber push-on button is sluggish and awkwardly located. Bad news. this was my second Taclight and used only a few hours.

Despite new batteries, It wouldn’t light up next day. Bought this one with the refund. It’s fine!.

I already owned the Bell and Howell Tactical flashlight as described in this sales wright up. The flashlights I received are not Bell and Howell! The only marking is the number 002. The LED used in this light is about 1/2 the diameter of the LED in the real Bell and Howell and the beam from this knock off is of course about half as bright.

Very disappointing! They did not even put a white reflector around the LED. There is no “O” ring on the lens cap but it does have a “O” ring installed on the battery/switch end of the light. NOT good for wet weather! The Ultrafire brand batteries shown in the add are not what it came with.

They brag about how heavy their batteries are. The weight of the supplied battery is 20 grams as compared to my Sanyo 3350 mAh battery that weights 40 grams. The battery supplied says 5800mAh. with flashlight on high power, the supplied battery went from 4.

2 volts full charge down to 3. 1 volts in only 35 minutes, the true capacity of this battery is probably less than 1000mAh! This is not a protected cell so the average user will destroy this cell very quickly.

The charger supplied works fine, full charge cut off at 4. 2 volts. Bottom line. buyer beware of _____!.

Beast! I replaced my 15 year-old incandescent 60 lumen E2D and this has been worth it. Before I sing the praises, the only problem is the longer profile (~1. 5 cm), though this doesn’t impact the balance in your hand.

If you hadn’t owned the shorter incandescent, you wouldn’t know. (The biggest downside is that the new E2D won’t fit in pants with a special flashlight/spare mag, thin Velcro pocket). The construction is solid, the gaskets feel solid and everything feels just perfect.

I was unsure how I would like the “2-way” clip (I feared it would be flimsy) but it appears to be working very well thus far for attaching to pants pockets in either head up or head down configuration.

Now, onto why you are reading. the light! I like the balance achieved between intense spotlight and broad coverage at 1000 lumens. The ability to have a 5 lumen “all purpose light” is fantastic and the 5 lumes seems much brighter than I thought it would be and is perfectly suitable for everyday use.

The on/off button features solid construction and works as well as the 15 year old antecedent. While I haven’t tested the 1000 lumen output with any scientific gear, I did do side-by-side comparisons of Chinese-made 300 lumen $30 flashlights, as well as a solid American-made replacement LED for my old 6P madeby Malkoff (~$50).

No question Surefire was #1 in brightness, clarity and uniformity. Malkoff was solid, but not as bright, but head and shoulders above the Chinese-made Pelican. Though pricey, the Surefire is true to its pedigree and is the last flashlight I’ll need to buy.

Now if only they would make better options for single-AAA LEDs.

Great light. I have a handful of them going back to the original defender LED from 2008. The older generation of this light from around 2018, is a little different even though sometimes it’s hard to “spot” the differences.

Get it?!?! “Spot”?!? The earlier generation (if I recall) was around 600 lumens. A similar difference can be seen with the X300 weapon lights (600 vs 1000). The older design of this light focused the beam into a tighter spot pattern to make use of the lower output of the LED (which I actually prefer for this lights purpose).

The new pattern is also fantastic. Plenty of light and more broadly focused. With either light, you can’t go wrong. Surefire quality is unbeatable. One light I lost in the Minnesota elements in the winter, found months later after the snow and salt melted, had been bashed around by snow shovels, knocked against concrete and steel.

When it was found it still worked like it had been babied in a safe. Couldn’t even tell anything had happened to it. Buy this light once; cry once over the price, and move on. 🙂 It’ll last a lifetime.

The price is indeed expensive, but quality is wonderful. I bought former model of SureFire flash light at NC 10 years ago. This old one is still have durability , so I have used old one without any problem.

I did not remember old one’s price. Maybe old model was expensive as same as this new model. If i say one tiny problem of this SureFire light , this light should be needed that battery is “CR123A”. But i think the reason that this flash light is awesome bright is by using “CR123A”.

Now i’m using both old model and New this model usually.

Everything about this torch is quality from the build to the actual brightnes. It is light, sturdy and a well made torch and waterproof for British weather. I use it for dog walking and it fits in my back or coat pocket comfortably.

Lights up unlit paths to check for other dogs etc and the beam has a nice long throw on the dark rurul paths I use. Easy to charge and easy to use the four basic modes. Comes with the usual buckle attachments etc but it has no strobe and the battery is Olight specific.

However I think it is still worth the 75 I paid and the cost of a new battery is reasonable. This torch is the best handheld torch I have ever owned.

Extremely bright and useful piece of equipment. I hope it is durable for the price. I wish the dim function was a hard switch maybe a double click. Most uses for self defense will need the bright light.

Easier selection of the dim portion would be a great addition.

This device is great, I was very surprised at the throw because I am used to high line flood style lights. It is built like a tank and am comfortable carrying in my truck, maybe not an EDC carry. Longhorn Tactical is a local business to Austin that accommodates it’s customers well.

Looks like a freight train light. Extremely bright. 3200 lumens but seems even brighter with the way olight makes their lenses now. Holds charge well. Must have. I also have the old SRMini Intimidator II which is 3200 lumens but 2x it’s size and this light probably has better optics.

Excellent torch. Well constructed and tough in all weathers. Very good light output and extremely bright. 5*

One of my favorites. I have One for my own use, and gifted 3 other Seeker 2 Pro Olights. Pretty much a great all around light to make your backyard look like day! And it is perfect size too. This is mostly a big flood like area light but I am talking a big area!!!!!.

This new TK22UE is as awesome as expected. I’ve carried the older version daily since 2013, It’s been through some abuse over the last 8 years and has only needed a few new batteries over the years. The newest version blows the output of the other out of the water.

I thought the old one was bright until I fired this one up. I love them both and expect the same performance and longevity out of the new one.

I am a big Fenix fan and I am in the process of switching all my tourches to use the new ARB-L 21-5000 , 21700 series battery and acquired the TK22V2 to go along with my E35V3. 0 & PD36R. The TK22V2 is a great little thrower, nice tight beam with a nice bright white light, very little spill, fits great in your hands & has a easy UI to operate.

Battery has unbelievable runtimes and will last, even on high. With the above tourches in my inventory, I’m set for anything. You will not go wrong on purchasing the TK22 V2. 0, or any of the other 2 tourches I mentioned.

This flashlight from pelican is a very well-built and solid instrument. It has great brightness, and I love the fact that it can run on either one 18650 battery or on two CR 123’s. It is programmable, which makes it useful for different types of users.

The only gripe I have is that the programming feature is a little difficult to work with. Programming takes a series of half presses to switch to different program modes, and that feature can be a little touchy.

This flashlight is extremely bright, but in my limited time using it so far, it seems to burn through batteries rather quickly. I was using 2x CR123 batteries and most usage was on medium power. According to the product information that combination should last for about 2hrs of usage.

I don’t know exactly how much usage I got out of it, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t 2hrs. It doesn’t help that the battery indicator LED is only accurate when using 2x Alkaline AAs or an 18650 (per the manual).

I travel a LOT, and use the flashlight for work. I use the AA so I do not worry about Lithium batteries getting taken at the airport. The bright setting is great for spotlighting a work area from a distance, and the low setting is great for working with reflective metals up close.

the batteries have lasted longer than expected, and the flashlight fits in my pocket so it is always ready to use.

Super good quality and well made like all Surefire flashlights, made in the USA! No metal spring clip which makes it easy to carry in your pocket. Like the low lumens for general use and then it has 600 lumens of bright light for when you need it.

Expensive but not made in China.

Bought this flashlight and love it ! Great size and puts out a great amount of light. Easy to use a great product. Highly suggest. Order and delivery was great as well.

Been using this LED flashlight for 2 years now on the docks of Puget Sound. Its been great during the squid season. It been in rain, snow, and even dropped into saltwater. It always works.

This light is super bright, use it for camping. Only thing I would change is having to to hold the button down for the brightest setting.

Great, clear centre beam with enough splash on the side to see any incoming. Only two negative I can see is proprietary battery and no design on the butt to smash glass or heads without impacting charge point.

Solid torch otherwise and feels like quality that will last decades. All attachments are very well built as well and can stand up to hunting, camping or you being air dropped into Ukraine or Afghanistan behind enemy lines hunting bunnies or picking up a nice looking goat.

Great light to carry around. The value of what you get given the price is unmatched. This is my second one of this model. The first one took quite a beating and never ceased to work. I let my little cousin play with it in the pool and she was diving for it at the bottom of the 12 ft end.

She threw the light 20 feet into the air and it landed on concrete, squarely on its front bezel which dented it and popped the front lense loose and allowed water in. I gave it to her expecting it to be a lost cause but it still works weeks later after more diving and rough handling.

I decided to get another to assume its EDC. Its slim profile is why I bought it the first time. Its hat clip and the durability is why I bought it the second time over the Lumintop Tool which I like quite well.

OLIGHT makes a fantastic product. I’m still carrying one of their other flashlights (M20 X-Warrior) in a duty capacity for 10 years now. It has been dropped, kicked, submerged, washed, and abused thoroughly.

Used regularly since I work at night and always can be counted on to be ready to go. Go with Olight and it will never fail you when you need it. I’ll add some photos if I can later on.

Small, light and powerfull flood light with a range of light settings to suit, well made and durable, i have other olight torches, they’re not cheap, but they are well worth the money.

Very nice body, heavy duty, don’t like the switch activation, could be brighter. Would take a Fenix light over OL anytime.

Had a lot of torches over the years and this one would have to be the best very easy to charge would recommend it
