20 Best Filament For 3D Printing (2023 Updated)

This filament looks great when it works, but the roll I got clogged constantly. When I cleaned out the clogs, there was always a piece of something stuck in the nozzle that looks like metal shavings (see photos).

It was not one of the black plastic flecks, it was harder and larger and darker and completely clogged the nozzle. The nozzle clogs happened so frequently, I was never able to print a single object completely.

I’m leaving two stars because maybe my roll was just a dud, and the filament does look nice when it works.

I bought this because the ad said it was 30% carbon fiber and 70% PLA. Well, it’s definitely not. However, it prints very well at 230C and is pretty strong. Not bad for the price. I might buy more rolls in the future.

Incredible quality. With a flashforge creator pro I dialed in my settings and getting great quality prints. With minor finishing excellent effect.

This is my go-to filament in many colors. I print hundreds of rolls of this each year. The filament prints well and can’t be beat for the price. I’ve always rated 5 stars in the past, but… For some reason that I can’t even guess at, someone has decided to make a couple of annoying changes to the packaging of this product.

First, they started putting in a separate piece of paper in the box with specs and marketing on it. I can’t really tell you what it says, and that’s the point, at a time when many companies are looking to be more environmentally conscious, someone decided to waste paper to say things that could be on the box, now I have to toss out a separate sheet for every box I order.

This was mildly annoying, but easy enough to ignore. NOW…. They’ve added another label on the side of the spool. More wasted paper, but that’s not the most annoying part, these new labels seem to applied to the spools AFTER the filament has been put on them, including the 2 pieces of tape that hold the free end of the filament in place until use.

Now I can’t peel the tape back easily because it’s covered by the stupid label. I have to take a knife and cut the tape every time I start a new roll. Seriously annoying. I really love this filament and can’t say enough things about the filament, but the changes to the packaging make no sense and I wish they would stop with the labels.

I picked up a spool of this stuff locally on a whim, then after going home and reading up on the stuff a bit came up with a plan to print it. Firstly, glow filaments are THE most abrasive filament you can put through your printer, even more so than carbon filled filaments! A hardened nozzle is an absolute must or you’ll be replacing your nozzle before you can even run 200g of this stuff through your printer! Secondly, I would advise ignoring the reccomended printing temperature on the label, I wasnt able to get anything even vaguel resembling layer adhesion until about 220C, and it printed far better at 235-240, though at those temps stringing was amplified and the performance with overhangs and bridges was somewhat poor.

I would reccomend starting out at 230C. Do note that printing above 250C will cause PLA to burn and release noxious fumes, so keep the temp under 245. Also it is important to note that printing above 235 will reduce the strength of it’s glow effect, so spend some time tuning your printer to this filament to find the right balance of layer adhesion and glow.

Also, like every other filament I’ve purchased from Microcenter, it was wet out of the box and needed to be dried prior to use. As far as mechanical properties go, once you get the right print settings for this filament it produces parts that are far tougher than you would expect from PLA, rivaling the impact resistance of polyamide but with the stiffness of PLA, and only slightly denser to boot! I’ve printed stuff with this that I expected to fail in short order but had managed to survive.

Overall, I am very happy with this filament and Inland’s PLA+ is one of the few lines of filament from Microcenter that I will purchase again.

It prints OK. For whatever reason it requires a nozzle temperature of 230 and a bed temperature of 70 on my tenlog tld3 pro, which is higher than the 210, 60 that works for hatchbox pla. The glass transition temperature is also lower than the hatchbox.

But the main problem with this filament is that it warps almost like abs. It also almost always required glue on my textured glass print bed before I switched to PEI. I printed a benchy with this filament and the hull is mangled because of the warping.

The PEI bed, however held on really well to the model, and the bottom is flat and smooth. The black benchies are made of inland pla. The white ones are made of hatchbox glow pla.

This filament is cheap – and it is cheaply made. I have printed with a couple rolls – both were very tangled – repeatedly jamming from tangles on the roll that were so bad that they would stop feeding.

Once you used a third of the roll the tangling was less – but then the crumbly spots started. Each roll had spots that were so dry and crumbly that the filament would break as it tried to feed. You could just crumble it for a foot or two, it would break to bits when gently squeezed, it didn’t feel like any normal filament – and then the filament would return to normal flexibility.

Someone told me that it was rumored to be mislabeled PLA and not ABS – a plastics expert told me to burn a little and if it smoked it was probably ABS while if it smelled sweet it was likely PLA, and it both smoked and smelled sweet.

It prints at ABS temperatures – warps and shrinks like ABS, and I got a couple great prints out of it. I printed a T-Rex head and it didn’t break during the print and looked great – then I couldn’t print the mounting stick without warping.

I printed a twisted star vase using a vase slice, and it came out waterproof. But I had prints fail because of crumbling and others failed because of tangling. If I had to guess I would guess that it was a blend of plastics, maybe poorly sorted recycled plastic.

Not worth it unless you don’t care that some prints fail.

4/5 PROS: I wrote an earlier review of this product and said that I could not get it to feed through the Monoprice extruder. After looking around the internet I found that what is needed to make this work with the Monoprice 3d printer is to make new frame around the stepper motor of the extruder.

You have to design a new part, (I used ABS) with your printer so that the flexible filment is supported right at the exit point of the extruder gear. If there is no support the filament it just bends and then goes around the extruder gear and not down the nylon tube to the heated portion of the extruder.

After making this change to the 3D printer I was able to product a nice qualtiy part using the setting below. It’s slow gong but it will work, it’s also hard to get the “raft” off by pulling, use a razor blade and cut it off works the best.

If it didn’t have some of these growing pains I would have given it a better rating. More colors in the future would be nice. CONS: I order to made a part with the flexible filament you must change out the support piece and the setting to used to make a part would, Layer: High, other wise it becomes stringy, Temp: 230C and Speed has to be 30mm/sec.

otherwise it doesn’t stay together. Unless you are willing to make changes to the exturder don’t buy any type of flexible filament from any source, also, with out this change PET type of filament has the same problem.

This is the semi flexible type of filament which is available. I’m sure that the next generation of 3D printers from Monoprice will have the change, because the many different types of filament coming to the world of 3D printing making this a must have product to the home.

So over the last few days I have played with multiple parameters using the flexible 1. 75mm filament with my Monoprice Dual extrusion printer. I have to say this is the first real problem I’ve had with any filament or the printer since I bought it almost a year ago.

The Monoprice printer is excellent and better than any other FDM printer I’ve ever used. I’ve used dozens of different filaments with this printer and all have worked very well. This filament is the first that has not worked though.

If I had to guess, I think it is a problem with the material being too soft. I have ninjaflex which seems to be moderately stiffer. It pulls into the extruder fine compared to the Monoprice material.

I have cleaned out the extruder head multiple times but still it fails to load properly most of the time. If I do get to load it draws very slowly, and once I’ll start a print its as if nothing will even come out.

I’ve tried multiple speeds, temperatures, etc with no luck. I’ll keep trying to find any parameters that work, but until then I’d avoid this filament. PROS: Good price for 1Kg spool CONS: Won’t get a consistent print.

Won’t load properly compared to ABS or PLA.

I have been searching for a filament that is easy to use and provides consistent results. After my first purchase with Atomic I was hooked. Within the first couple of weeks I have now placed multiple orders with them and will continue to do so.

Their quality is great, shipment is fast, and best of all, the print quality is reliable. We have gone through multiple rolls now with 0 issues. Running a small business, it is absolutely critical that we are up and running as much as possible and Atomic filament has made that possible.

Would absolutely recommend to others looking for consistency.

In the beginning ive always looking at budget/cheaper filaments. Over time of printing about 12-15 brands Ive found there is the good, the bad, and the ****. I finally was suggested Atomic from another printing friend and Im happy to say that I now get some of the most reliable prints ever.

I did some tuning with this ABS also and now it comes out as good as I need it be. I print a lot of parts for Voron builds so I need those to not only look fantastic but also have the best layer adhesion I can go to make those parts rock solid.

Black is great but check out some of the colors also! They look amazing!.

I got this PETG right while needing to print a new hot-end adapter/ carriage and in spite of some slop in the temporary setup this stuff got the job done. At first I just temp. adjusted my PLA settings and surprisingly that only really produced an error in short layer times (~15s).

Ive switched to a 4020 blower for part cooling and slicing with conditional slow down and a “jerky” retraction avoids most stringing. I’ve mostly printed functional parts and the performance under heat and strain make it worth figuring out the settings.

Glue stick seems to be a must with a ****** build plate but with the glue it works like a charm. Finally some humid months left it sputtering at the hotend but throwing it in the oven at lowest temp (160F for 45min) brought it back to day 1 performance.

The filament arrived with damaged package. The filament is unusable after being exposed to the elements for who knows how long. It is rough and oxidized. Also, the color was NOT True Red but was True White.

I am returning all 5 rolls of filament that arrived in 3 shipments. The only good thing about this is that Walmart makes it easy to return in the first 30 days. I will NEVER buy 3D filament from them again!!!!.

I was confused when then package arrive, because I wasn’t expecting an order from “a certain well-known bookseller that will not be named” and the spool that arrived was a little different than the picture (wide around and thin at the sides instead of being fat at the sides).

That said, I got the amount and type of filament that I wanted so I think it worked out in the end. I already started a job with the new filament and it came out better than expected. Be aware natural PLA is more translucent than you might expect, so it is harder to see on the build plate or if you drop a piece.

Exactly what was advertised…. Always a plus!!! Exactly what I needed!!! The only problem was Fed-Ex couldn’t find us!!

Filament was very brittle for pla filament upon arrival. It frequently breaks unnecessarily do to the filament being expired upon arrival. I would not recommend this for this filament is of poor quality, overly priced for the quality, and will frequently cause problems inside your 3D printer.

With that said the only reason I gave this a star above 1 star is because the prints don’t come out too bad with it. It could have layer adhesion issues but it does not to the extend I would have thought it would have had.

But retraction issues are still pretty bad though with this filament. I also give them credit for the filament was extremely nicely wound. I wouldn’t have thought that to have been the case for the price of the filament.

Prints ok in my modified Ender 3. It works best at around 235c nozzle and 60c glass bed. I’m using a Titan Aero extruder so I’m not fighting with the filament slipping on the hob gear while being forced through a foot of boden tube.

The only complaint I have with this is that even though it was sealed and with the dessicant in place the material pops and crackles as if it’s been sitting in a sauna before it was sealed up. I’m not getting failed prints but they’re not very smooth at all.

Honestly I just wanted to prove to myself that my machine could print this material and it does. Are the parts smooth and useable? Not so much. One good thing is that layer adhesion is amazing. Once the parts are printed I cannot tear it apart by hand.

Pretty amazing. If I dried this stuff out in the oven and printed with it I’m sure it would look and feel awesome.

Over the past tree years, I’ve used almost every brand of filament out there (including some unbranded ones). So far, Hatchbox is one of the best (if not THE best) brands I’ve used. I was pleasantly surprised to see how neatly wound each layer of filament is as it comes off the spool and enters the machine.

Best of all, I got the filament at a sensible price. Great deal!.

I’m new at 3D printing, and (perhaps predictably) gummed the extruder head up. several times. Running a few inches of cleaning filament through fixed it easily. The instructions called for 12″ per clean I just ran it until it was no longer discolored and that seems to be working fine.

Perhaps long-term it will prove problematic, but I don’t know yet or if the 12″ measurement was just to be absolutely sure. PROS: Easy, fast CONS: Instructions maybe call for too much filament use.

The mini printer is PHENOMENAL. and all the filaments I have purchased from Monoprice have printed Great. WORD to the WISE: I did purchase a cheap industrial grade filament and it completely gooked my first printer.

This was my first filament ever and it has been the best so far. Prints stick to the bed very easily (I’m using 60C temp for bed) and prints come out outstanding at 0. 12mm layer height. Very easy to use, recommended for beginners and experts alike! My favorite filament so far!.

FlashForge 1. 75mm Creator Series PLA Filament does not work as good as some filament I have used but there are always issues with 3d printing you have to over come. I have to print using 235c and no cooling fan on my ender 3 pro.

And still have layer adhesion problems. Will continue trying to solve until it is gone.

It has printed great for me so far. PETG is as easy to print with as PLA, except it needs to be printed about 40 C higher temperature. It will hold up to being bent better, and is not prone to bending or warping if it gets a little hot.

This particular PETG is a brilliant glossy yellow. It’s also worth noting that the transparent spool is bolted together, if companies were to start selling filament without the spool, you could reuse these spools.

eSun is providing many innovative filaments and also supplying resin for that kind of 3D printer, one of the top brands.

I have used E-sun pla+ countless times in other colors but this is the first time printing with white. I found this filament to be very brittle more so than regular pla and it should have been a lot stonger imo.

I found broken filament in my PTFE tube after my second print about 80 percent full spool and repeated snapping between prints when the printer is idle. this cause the filament o rewind back into the spool wich in turn cause the filament to binded while printing.

i do not know what the difference in compution white PLA + but i will not purchase it again.

The black ABS I bought is as good as I’ve seen, although I admittedly am a novice. I’m just getting into printing with it, but small parts are good quality and strong. I need to get my process down for larger pieces to stay out of warping.

I wouldn’t stay in the room while the printer is running due to the volatiles in ABS, but the few times I stick my head in to check on progress this stuff never has an overpowering smell to it. Bag came tightly vacuum sealed w/dessicant packet in the bag.

Spool sides are slotted, so they work well in my dehydrator. I’ve paid 3-4 times the amount for other more popular brands (and material) of filament in the 1kg spool size and received much less impressive packaging jobs.

I ended up buying a lot more filament from Zyltech once I saw the quality of their packaging and the print quality. Highly recommend these guys for the value on any filament, but this ABS I bought from them is very workable for some usable prints.

I purchased this because I wanted to make sure I was getting a light gray filament and I’m very happy with the color. This is the most temperature sensitive filament I’ve used but once you get it tuned it works well.

For large flat items prone to curling I print a 4mm brim with the head at 200 and the bed at 70. I also squish the PLA down on that first layer by printing a. 3mm layer with the head. 2mm off the bed.

Let it slowly cool before removing items. I get almost no curling even when printing a full bed (220×220) of RPG game tiles. For taller, thinner items that aren’t prone to curling I run the head at 195 and disable the heated bed after the first layer.

For unsupported overhangs (like 45 degrees at the tops of pillars) this filament liked to cool quickly and I haven’t found the ideal setting for it yet so I use different filament when i have overhangs that this can’t handle.

Be aware that the diameter may vary so pull out a couple meters and measure for an average. Make sure you take measurements at 90 degree offsets at each spot you measure. I got an average of 1. 73mm and yours may be different so be sure to update your slicer to avoid any over or under extrusion.

Overall I am please and will be buying another roll as soon as I finish this review. This isn’t a perfect filament but the price is great and it really works well with how I’m using it. I like that I can be certain of the color, too.

It’s as strong as my other PLA filaments and the prints are just as nice once you get your slicer tuned for it. I’d give it 5 stars if it were a little more forgiving with overhangs.

This has been really good filament. The one buyer who said it was “wound wrong” obviously is a newbie who let go of the end of the filament, let it get tangled, and didn’t know how to recover. In over 1,000 rolls of filament that I’ve used, I’ve had this happen once early on, learned my lesson, and never had it happen again.

The ABS prints best at around 95C bed temp and 230C nozzle temp. Use hairspray on glass bed, and it sticks like crazy when hot, lets loose when cold. This will also minimize the warping that sometimes occurs with ABS.

Used this for a Tesla Model 3 sunglasses tray insert. The only complaint I have with this filament is that batch to batch sometimes has a color variation, but I believe it has gotten better.

I tend to use the Ultimaker variety as it is absolutely rock solid in terms of its performance. Also, the UM3 neatly detects each material automatically which is a nice little bonus. I’ll continue to use this material.

I love the clarity and texture on the images I have printed so far. My projects lately are about light and wearable tech and this product works really well for this maker application.

Ultimaker Filament us super easy to use and provides really good results! it may be expensive but the results are always good

I purchased my first 3D printer (Lulzbot Taz 5) a while back but held off on buying filament until I could do more research on the subject. 3DOM and Ingeo came highly recommended for PLA, so I gave it a shot.

I had the normal issues that first-time printer operators go through; hardware config, software setup, learning general concepts, etc. Setting out to print your first object can be troublesome if you start with a cheap, possibly inconsistent filament.

My first print, the standard “rocktopus,” did okay. Then, I went to built something a bit larger. and it failed miserably. Bad layer adhesion, missing/scattered layers, deformed shapes and a clogged extruder.

Had I used a cheap filament, I could have easily blamed the plastic instead of the operator (me). Knowing the filament was verified consistent and tightly quality controlled, helped me troubleshoot my setup/printing issues.

Applying a bit of cooking oil (you can use canola or olive oil) to about 2-3 inches to the end of the filament prior to loading helped to lubricate the nozzle and made for some extremely smooth prints.

I now do this before all large prints as a preventative measure. Also, I upped the temperature to 218 degrees Celsius from the typically recommended 210 Celsius max (someone also recommended 220 C, but that was too hot to yield uniform build lines).

This was due to the nature of the heatsink on the hexagon hotend. The heatsink prevents heat from traveling up to the filament and melting the plastic in the gears. This cooling also tends to cool the feed chamber a bit.

So a bit more heat was required to make sure the hotend stayed hot enough to extrude without jamming. Keep in mind, your results may vary depending on your filament color, environment and printer, but this worked out great for me.

3DOM has really impressed me with a great quality product and their support of renewable materials and environmentally responsible manufacturing. I’ll be back for more.

I’ve printed in numerous brown filaments before, and most print out in a washed-out almost-pastel brown, but this is by far the best, deepest, richest chocolate brown I’ve ever used! It prints smoothly, adheres to the bed nicely, and the finished product has a beautiful, lustrous sheen! Highly recommended!!!.

I bought this after finishing a roll of eSun gold PLA+ filament. Both filaments look very similar, the 3DFuel filament is just a tiny bit darker and less glossy. The 3DFuel filament’s material properties, however, are superior in every way.

Layer adhesion, print quality of small details, flexibility, and durability are vastly better using the Pro PLA.
