20 Best Fertilizer For Root Vegetables (2023 Updated)

I have used dozens of fertilizers over the years with varying results, some very good, others not so much. About four years ago I went fully organic and started looking for natural organic solutions for my nutrients.

I’ve been using the basic line of Roots Organics products and am very happy with the results. There’s no need to go with chemical based nutrients that invariably break down into a salt in your media, when you have outstanding products like these to use instead.

Finishing a grow, first time with roots fert,potting soil is roots, organic and i toss in two handfuls of organic dry bloom food. this seems to correct any imbalances that others talk about. plants eat a lot and no issues besides heavy plants.

I also toss in some molasses. I feed once a 3-5 days from week three on.

Great nutrients. My plants love these nutrients. Roots organics is a great brand and I definately recommend this product. Very thick and dark and a little stinky. It’s not watered down or anything either.

I’ve had good luck using this product on transplants as well as established plants. I used it on some alumroot growing out between two rocks because a liquid fertilizer was the only type I could get in the soil where that plant was growing.

The result was the lushest, most beautiful plant I’ve ever grown. This stuff has been great on transplants, too. Not a surprise because it has much more phosphorous than nitrogen or potash. Also the root stimulant.

I didn’t have good luck with cardinal flower I used it on after transplanting late in the season — not sure why, maybe nothing would have worked. I’ve come to consider this stuff a vital part of gardening products to have on hand along with more traditional fertilizers.

Recently got this because I saw it on a video on plant propagation and transplanting. It is supposed to reduce transplant shock and also help plants root faster and develop a strong root system. So far so good.

I mean, none have died since I started using this.

Arrived on time, well package, no leaks. This was a better price from other e- stores. Set the product aside that was until wind broke off a part of my tomato vine. I followed the directions and it started growing little roots.

Will it produce, wait see kind of thing, it seems to be thriving. I really bought it for my herbs to take my cuttings and grow more plants, like basil.

My cannabis garden loves this bloom fertilizer. We use every year. Only issue I have is the tax rate.

I use this in flower to help put on weight of buds. I use 1 tbs per gallon of water and half as much cal mag when used. Plants are doing well.

I love all my roots organic products will be getting more

I had my lawn soil tested, and the recommendation was for 1 pound of potash per year per thousand square feet. This is the perfect product, easy to put down with a small hand-cranked applicator, and the price from Ace is half what it costs anywhere else.

Potash is a mineral containing 60% potassium, the “K” in the N-P-K rating on every bag of fertilizer. This bag is rated 0-0-60, indicating it’s 60% potassium. I use organic lawn fertilizer that’s lacking in potassium, which is why I add potash separately.

If your lawn fertilizer already includes potassium, you may not need to add any separately, check the bag for potassium, the third number indicates percentage of potassium. Adding soluble potash (K2O) to the soil helps grass withstand stress, drought, and disease.

Potassium helps maintain turgor pressure in the cells of the plant, resulting in a positive influence on drought tolerance, cold hardiness, and disease resistance.

I had not had my clematis vines bloom since I first planted them five years ago. After doing a little research on the internet I came to the conclusion they needed potassium. I added this product to the soil (I just poured some on) during the winter.

I saw flowers as soon as spring arrived. Periodic doses of the potash seem to keep the flowers lasting.

Loving this fertilizer so far for my fiddle leaf fig tree! Has helped with new leaf growth! Highly recommended.

This is a really good way to boost blooms! I have found it easy to use and the plants are going great.

This product has simple instructions and is very easy to apply to soil. I find it much easier to apply when seeds are first planted. Once the vegetable grows it is harder because of the numerous stalks (green beans, sweet peas, etc).

Instead of spikes, I will be using a water soluble fertilizer at this stage of growth. The spike fertilizer has worked well for all of my vegetables. The stalks grow strong and very green. The vegetables reached picking size quickly.

Will continue to use spikes at the planting stage.

I really like how easy it is to use spikes, but if you have a larger garden (consisting of more than 3 plants), it would be more cost effective the use the granules or water soluble version of this product.

The biozome package is a nice plus, but N-P-K seems rather low at 2-7-4 compared to what the leading national brand is offering in their products.

I have been using Grow more all-purpose fertilizer for my vegetables. I have had amazing results so far. I start all my vegetables in a small hydroponics seeding set up and then move them to buckets in a small greenhouse until they are big enough to transplant to the ground.

I always experience transplant shock and have lost some and since using Grow More I have experience zero loss. All of my plants are thriving and growing at a much faster and more vibrant pace. The instructions are very easy to understand and it takes a minimum amount of product to achieve maximum results.

I know that this will be used for all my future garden needs not just vegetables. I have been telling everyone how much Grow More has improved the growth and outcome of my vegetable garden. We have just a few more weeks until the first batch of tomatoes and peppers are ready to pick and we can not wait.

This seems like a fine product, attractive, sturdy packaging and directions written very clearly on the package. However, this is not at all what I expected when I ordered this product. I thought a water soluble, general fertilizer is would be something like miracle grow pellets I sprinkle on my house plants and in my very small vegetable garden, and water the plants and be done.

That is NOT what this is. This requires careful measuring and mixing in a proper container to use on acres of land. So this bad will likely take me a lifetime to use if I can get the mixture amounts right for such a small garden.

If you are a seasoned gardener or farmer I would definitely recommend this product. But if you are someone like me that’s just trying to keep my house plants, this is probably not what you are looking for.

I used Root Crops Alive for my beets this year, and they grew faster than usual and produced better and larger beets. I also used it for some sprouted potato chunks that I was going to throw way, but decided instead to plant as an experiment.

My six little potato chunks produced beautiful potatoes! Some were six inches long!.

I love this fertiliser, for It is all organic and made with clean organic matter. It contains all the nutrients growing vegetable plants need. It also contains elects improving the health of the soil.

My plants are happy, and growing fast and healthy. I have been using Dr Earth fertilisers for all my vegetables, blueberries, and flowering shrubs for many years. You cannot go wrong with this brand.

I’m actually using this Jobe’s Organics Bursting Blooms in my vegetable garden this summer. It got up in the 90’s here in North Carolina nearly every day since late May, which caused a lot of my pepper, tomato, and cucumber plants to either stop making flowers, or if they DID make them, they’d fall off.

So I am using shade cloth on the tomato plants, using this fertilizer on all the plants, and hand-pollinating whenever new blooms open. To demonstrate; here is a photo of my Big Rainbow heirloom tomato plant.

You can count 9 tomatoes here on this plant just from this angle shot (throughout the plant though, there are FOURTEEN, yes, 14 new tomatoes on a plant thats been subjected to 90+ degree heat for over a month)! So definitely try it out on vegetable plants as well.

Especially when gardening in high heat. Also, it smells delicious! This fertilizer smells like top grade coffee mixed with nag champa incense. I love it and it doesn’t attract lots of flies like some other fertilizers that stink.

Addition of their “Biozome” made this product stink really bad. The smell is like if you took toe cheese from an entire nation of people and stuck it all in a plastic bag. Yes, the smell is this bad.

The product worked fine before already without the “Biozome” addition. Now it just works the same, but with some stink added in. Please change it back to how it was before.

I’ve trusted Jobe’s for years, I really like these fertilizer pellets, so easy to use and great for all my plants and trees, too! Recently fed my slow growing watermelons and they are flourishing and producing rapidly, just within the last 2 weeks! Great fertilizers smell because they’re full of what plants need and want.

I have been using Espoma products for the last several years and have been very pleased with the results. I use Gardentone at the beginning of the year when I top off my raised beds-just mix the recommended amount into the top few inches of soil.

The result is an abundance of vegetables! Being able to pick up the larger bag, right around the corner at Do It Best for an amazing price (and they load it for you)-What more could a gardener ask for?.

I love garden tone! I try to use bio-tone starter when I first start my plants, then Ill come back a month or two later and fertilize with garden tone. However, last year I could only get my hands on garden tone.

I had a huge, beautiful, delicious crop all season long. I love that its a slow release, so you only have to fertilize once or twice in the season. I would 110% recommend garden tone!.

Do not put it around your own house if you don’t want it to smell terrible. Dogs love to eat it even though it makes them throw up. Since it has poultry manure there are other things of concern like microbial pathogens.

I use a starter fertilizer when I plant anything. It gives the roots an extra jump to grow into the soil and anchor the plant. Then let the party begin.

I have had 2 Root & Veg boxes for 1 year. I now wish I had gotten a regular earthbox instead because I have had much more success with them. I plant according to the EarthBox Planting Charts. I add water every day (twice in summer) until drainage hole overflows.

The root & veg boxes almost immediately overflow (this is very different from the standard earthbox). Like many others, I was sorely disappointed that this heavy box does not come with wheels. Last summer I planted a squash and zucchini in each of them.

The plants did well, looked healthy and grew to flowering size. Over the fall and winter (yes, it’s warm enough that I can grow in wither), I planted beets, radishes and carrots in one box. These plants never became more than greens.

The carrots barely grew beyond the tiniest seedlings. We harvested 1 radish from the box and ate all of the greens at the end of the season. In the other box we planted cilantro, chard and a collard plant.

The healthy beautiful cilantro died a few weeks after being transplanted to the root & veg box, the chard never grew and 1 plant died, but the collard did well giving us both greens and inflorescences that we ate like broccoli.

I transplanted several lettuce and cilantro plants to the box in the spring. The cilantro rapidly died, the red lettuce flattened out and the romaine remained upright. I planted one of each of these plants in a self-watering hanging basket (bowl), and the plants in the basket are thriving and doubling in size as compared with their siblings banished to the root & veg box.

I highly recommend checking the grates between seasons. I neglected to do this and now that my spring plants are failing, I wish I had. Something about this box is killing my plants. I’m just not sure what it is yet.

I have been using Earthboxes for more than 20 years and would not use anything else at this point. I live in North Carolina and the soil is just too hard to amend for residential gardening. Also, let’s not forget the snakes and other things that hide between the plants.

The Earthbox is pretty much set it and forget it as far as fertilizer and weeding. All you have to do is water and pick your produce when ready. I used to have a greenhouse and this produces more with much less effort and expense.

I promise you you will never get the yield from any other method of growing. I get literally hundreds of tomatoes from my four boxes. As I’m getting older, I invested in the raised frame with casters, just excellent.

Start off with one and I guarantee if you have the space, you’ll keep buying more. This is an incredible product.

I wish there was white in other box sizes. I bought 5 white Root and Veg boxes because of the color, have only plated one so far. The original boxes I started with absorb the summer heat here in Southern New Mexico.

I’m hoping the white color will help keep them cooler. The deepness of the boxes is wasted on what I want to grow but there are no white original or junior boxes. But I love the Earthboxes so I’ll take oversized in order to not have to water everyday in our heat.

I live in Western WA. cold rainy springs, cool summers with occasional rain and the odd hot day(s). The 1st year (2020) I used these Tomato Accelerators was a learning curve for me, resulting in unproductive and stunted tomato plants; likely due to stress.

I expected too much with too little work on my part. With this year’s spring once again being exceptionally long, cold and rainy; I placed the Accelerators over my tomato plants the 1st week in May when I set them out (April’s too cold in my micro climate).

This time however, I very carefully watched the weather daily; unzipping the top when it got nice and warm. or hot (all of 2 days, lol). and zipping them shut at night or when it cooled back down. Today is July 5th and it was warm earlier, so I finally removed the Accelerators as the weather should HOPEFULLY be nice and warmish from here on out (update: looks like rain tonight, lol).

My tomato plants are finally large and healthy. unlike 2 years ago. and have a couple of tomatoes. unlike 2 years ago. Just hoping I haven’t removed the Accelerators too soon, considering the change in weather we’ve been experiencing here the last few years.

To make the best use of these Accelerators, I recommend watching your weather very carefully and zipping and unzipping the top as needed; esp at night. My night temps got down into the low 30’s a few times in May, so I unzipped them during the day and then zipped them back up around 5pm.

It SEEMED to worked. or at least helped. since I didn’t lose any plants; though they DID seem to stagnate for most of May. Next year I plan on stepping up my game by using the Wall Of Water in tangdom with (inside) the Tomato Accerators.

I live a VERY windy area. Spring can have all 4 seasons in one day here. These offer a way to help get veggies (and any any new plant) established more quickly in a difficult climate. They keep veggies warm when the temps drop and offer great wind protection.

The tops open easily on warm days. My tomatoes have a great head start with these! I learned the hard way not to use these when temps dip below 30. I would use walls of water or some sort of extra protection next time.

Also, in our high winds, I put a brick on top of the earth staples and they held up fine. The loops tear off pretty easily. That could definitely be improved.

I have one this size and 4 that are 24in. in diameter and about 42in. tall. This is my 3rd year and will need to put some wax on the zippers but otherwise working well. I live in zone7 so hard freezes aren’t a problem.

Having lived in a hard core area before and employing something like this I would throw a sheet over these if a freeze was expected. My problem is that the large size apparently is no longer available.

This size is too small. I keep these on until the nights are warmer then take them off. makes a big difference in growth and fruit set. OR I wrap my cages in plastic(clothespin in place) and clothespin a top on that I can remove on warm days.

works well. that is what I will be doing now that the large size isn’t available. When I lived in the colder area of MT I made PVC hoops over a raised bed made of cinderblock. covered plastic over the hoops.

Put an incandescent bulb in there for early & late season. worked great. used it well into OCT.

This is exactly what I had expected from the product. It is an effective feed for hedges and fruits. The tub was more full than I thought it might be – no complaints – it will do the job I wanted it for and some.

I would definitely come back to purchase more/.

This comes in a Large bucket and for the amount it is a good price. I only gave it 3 stars as I bought it to try save a plant and I don’t think it’s made a big difference but not enough time as gone by to be certain.

I bought this yesterday because I was transplanting some Madagascar plants that a neighbor pulled out for me two days ago. So they started to look sad and down, When I planted them with Miracle grow potting soil they did good but right after I added the quick start and they all stood right up the next morning.

I must say I am completely satisfied. If you invest in plants, please invest in plant food as well. It is well worth it. And cheaper than buying plants every time they die. I have my own landscaping company and I always add miracle grow products to anything we plants for a good boost and happy clients.

I’ve used this product for years to help transplant seedlings root well. Use at half the recommended strength twice – one week apart – when potting up or transplanting out into the garden seedlings. Great stuff.

This product works well for getting good root formation on bedding plants. I would consider it a must have for starting and transplanting bedding plants. My only criticism is the label instructions call for “1/2 cap full per gallon”.

However there is no discernible marks on the cap indicating “1/2”. So I chatted with Kimber online and was told that it is 1 ounce or 2 tbls per gallon. This is good information since I mix 5 – 10 gallons at a time for my small greenhouse, so no more counting out 1/2 caps.

Thanks Kimber. Might be good to amend the label to indicate the alternate measurements mentioned.

This Root-it first feed is good stuff, it cuts a good few weeks out of your seedling/veg period. Gives them a brilliant boost. 10/10

Excellent product started using last year and I wouldn’t be without it

l use it on all my seeds when just starting to show and l have very strong plants my tomato plants seem to love it and crop very well
