20 Best Feed For Growing Horses (2023 Updated)

I bought this for my OTTB gelding to get some weight back on him after a bout of ulcers. Within a few weeks he visibly had packed on some pounds and I was really pleased! However, I also found out the best bonus quality of this product.

It makes all powdered supplements or meds palatable! I was surprised to find this product itself is a pretty fine powder. I expected it to be a pellet. When I was making his supplement packs his ground up meds easily mixed in with it.

Usually putting his sucralfate in his grain would result in him leaving it behind. The weight gain must mask the taste because he’d always end up licking the bottom of his bucket to get every last bit.

Even though I don’t need to use it daily anymore I always have some on hand because this is my go-to product to add when he needs powdered bute. I do a 50/50 mix and it never fails to get him to eat whatever I put with it.

I’ve been using this product along with Red Cell for years. I have a 37 yr old gelding and he has maintained his weight until this winter when I had to switch to a better senior feed and increase his feedings to 3 times a day.

His coat is good and he’s healthy. He’s gained all of his weight back and then some. I do suggest you research your horse’s nutritional needs but this has worked for me. It smells so good too!.

Tried this at the suggestion of a friend. This past summer, we took on care of an older horse, 20+ years old, who was downright emaciated. We didn’t know much about his history, we could just tell that he had been through some hard times.

Regular feed perked him up just a bit, but he really didn’t start filling out until we started using Farnam Weight Builder. The stuff smells so good, I’m tempted to eat it! After finishing his first bucket, Ollie looks like a different horse! He may never completely fill out like a younger horse, but at least he looks healthy now.

Every horse loved it and even the chickens would try to steal it! My ONLY issue with this feed is that is has too much added sugars (molasses, which causes the bag to “brick” up). I try very hard to avoid any added sugars to my horses diets, looking for feed with higher fat first, then protein, then carbs, as I compete in Endurance Racing.

The last thing my horses need is sugar! I have never fed this one before, and though the horses loved it, I won’t purchase it again because of the molasses. But if you have a finicky horse, they will chow it right down.

This is such a Great Horse Feed, for Brood Mares to Older Horses! It even has mixed in Forage, for My Older Brood Mare, who may soon have difficulties, with Hay Bale consumption & during recent Hay Shortages! She Loves this Feed & has become a Real Easier Keeper; just Fabulously Beautiful & Healthy, for a 15 year old Reining Champion.

It has also helped my 8 year old; Aztec/Andalusian Brood Mare, keep her Shapely Body! Very Impressed; with All of the Purina Omolene Feeds!! I use the 300 & 500 Omolene’s mixed, for all of My Younger Brood Mares & Stallions! Gorgeous Bunch of Happy Equines❣️❣️.

I highly recommend this product I purchased a colt that was born on June 9, 2015 and he had gotten bit by a rattle snake at 3 months old and then was weaned at 6 months. Grow colt has done miracles for my little man.

I’m on my second 7lb tub and I’ve seen this guy go from an ugly duckling into a Prince Charming!!! What I saw was that grow colt had more and better vitamins and minerals than the calf manna had so I ordered a 7lb tub.

Within 30 days I was seeing a drastic change in Leggs his long course straggly coat was being replaced by a soft healthy coat as I brushed him daily. His muscle tone was increasing his little thin legs were not as thin as his bones were growing.

His chest looked like both of his front legs came out of the same hole and now he has some width and muscle tone to his chest. So, if you are contemplating on whether to purchase this product or not all I can say is quit contemplating and order it cuz you won’t be sorry that ya did!!!.

By far the best and most economical way to supplement growing colts/fillies. It has the necessary vitamins, not fillers, like some of the more expensive hyped up brands. And its pelleted instead of powder, which my babies prefer.

I like this product. I give it to my yearling and two year old filly. Their coats are always very shiny, and they seem very healthy.

Started gradually switching him to this full time and by next week he will be getting about 10 pounds daily with an additional mixture of more supplements. He had a traumatic winter caused by a few moves and leaving his besties.

He is gaining back and will keep all informed in his progress.

I bought this feed because of the reviews & I wanted to put my colt on a feed that was healthy for him but I also want him to eat his feed. My yearling wouldn’t eat it. And it smelled weird like vitamins not like any feed I ever used.

He paced the stall and refused to eat it. I swapped it out with his old feed and he started eating. I’m going to try the other Tribute growth Textured but this time only going to order one bag till I see if he will eat it.

I was a bit skeptical at first but in just a few short weeks it was easy to see how all of the mares and foals were improving. All had shiny coats and many were even showing dapples for the first time.

We have 2 horses,,,a mother(19) and her daughter (15). With the extreme drought in Oklahoma there is not green grass for them to eat. The drought has also caused a shortage of hay. I feel badly for the farmers that are struggling.

So we decided we would give the ladies grain. We are hoping the Equine Senior will help the ladies make it through the horrible heat we’re having.

I bought this for my 31 year old Arab-Saddlebred that has tooth issues and is no longer able to chew hay or grass. He also has Cushings. A bag lasts me about a week and I also supplement him with alfalfa pellets.

It is more expensive than some other brands, but it works the best. When you consider the current price of hay, it’s not that bad. I feed him 3x/day with a feed bag and he is doing great. He gained weight and even shed out completely.

I order online and use the In-store pickup. The store staff is great and load my car for me; very convenient.

this stuff is literally a life saver. My horse wasn’t being properly fed by his caretaker in my absence & became severely malnourished. My vet told me he wouldn’t make it through that winter if I didn’t get his health up.

60 days of this feed & some vitamins/oils/forage he was healthy & beautiful. I’ve had him an additional 5 years since then.

I am very impressed with the results from Primeglo I have a very old Arabian that has trouble keeping weight on. He is actually putting on weight and increased activity with this product. The feed is actually soft enough for him to chew well and digest.

It seems very palatable because he gobbles it right up. I was also very impressed with the ease and speed of ordering and receiving my feed!.

Compared to what they were on before while living in California, I found this product on Chewy and the ingredients seem comparable. Don’t care for pellets because I have to soak for my older horse. After shipment a lot of the product was crushed to powder.

The horses like it though. Satisfactory.

I rescued a horse that was in his upper 20’s and was a body score 1 or 2. Feeding a combination of Senior Glo and the Stay Strong Metabolic Mineral Pellets, we put 200 lbs on him in about 8 weeks and was able to get him to a healthy weight and maintain his weight with this feeding program.

I feed this to my Arabian and quarter horse who are both around 15 years old. they’re thriving on it!

I have race horses (quarter horses) running all over the country and I have used every new “best feed gimmick” on the market. This being one of them, however, I opened my first bag of race ready, and the texture, the color, the smell was absolutely different than any I’ve used.

After two weeks of this feed, I have seen faster times, more wins and overall tightening, muscle stamina and even better attitudes and willingness to perform. I have found my diamond in the rough! I love this feed! And so do my horses! Thank you purina!.

I love this feed and would not change back to anything I have used in the past – and I have tried them all. I see the best results for my race horses on this feed. Their coats are shiny and they feel good.

I did not give this feed a 5 because it is not always consistent in texture and oil/molasses and they have started using chopped corn in the grain portion which I do not believe should be in any race feed.

I bought this for my OTTB. Switched him from Kalm Ulta because he needed to put on weight and top line. He looks great and has definitely put on weight. He looks overall, better-shiny coat, and he has filled out without getting “hot”.

I love this feed however I order 2 bags from chewy at $60 a bag. (Mind Blowing)…. What a received was 2 bags of old outdated feed. They have to be at least a year old. The bags I received have the old label/bag with a bay/brown horse on them.

Blue seal changed bags to what chewy has displayed with a white horse over a year ago. I have been feeding my horses this feed for over 5 years so I know the difference. Not to mention I can smell the rancid feed without even opening the bags.

Now I’m stuck with 100lbs of bad feed. I will be call Chewy Monday morning.

Thankful for this feed! I have a picky 17 y/o Thoroughbred who is a very hard keeper. She refuses to eat oil, powders or anything that is a mash. She hates beet pulp, hates hay pellets, and will pick through her soaked hay cubes.

I have tried every other high fat feed out there that she would just turn her nose up to or not finish her food. Started using the Blue Seal Sentinel LS and she gobbles up her food! She gets a powder joint supplement and before she would leave the powder behind.

Now she licks her bowl clean.

My four year old has always been on Purina’s Equine Junior, but I just felt that it wasn’t doing it’s job. So I switched to Omolene 300, (since he’s still growing like crazy!) and he’s never looked better! He weighs about 1000 and he’s getting 10lbs a day, and he no longer looks like a lanky young horse.

His muscle mass has improved, and his overall health looks amazing. Even though the two grains I’ve tried are the same company, the 300 is what truly worked best for my boy. It probably took only a few weeks to see a change! The step up in fat is just what he needed, so if you’re grocery shopping for a new grain for your young horse/brood mare, please give this a try.

I bought this product from my local feed and pet supply store. I love the new look of the bag too. My nursing mare is doing amazing with this product and her foal looks awesome. This is a better product than some that I have used.

Have used this quality Purina feed on my 20 yr. old broodmare that needed some help getting back into prime condition after nursing her foal. It worked perfectly, brought back muscle & shine to her coat again.

FABULOUS. Manna Pro is one of the best feed companies out there. I am over 65 and had broken my arm. The fact this was part of their shipping program is a HUGE blessing. I highly recommend. This feed smells like heaven.

My 28 year old horse has no teeth left, this food in it’s pelleted form, softens excellent when mixed with hot water. I am so glad it became available again as we were not sure what to do as it is the only thing she can eat.

Our calves and goats loves this feed, it’s also much less expensive than local feed store and it’s delivered for free. Manna pro has always been a name I trusted so when I saw this I was happy to be able to purchase it, I do wish it was in stock consistently but I understand with the price it is and the great quality it must sell out quickly.

I check the walmart. com site daily for 4 to 5 days before I know I need it to allow for delivery and have always been able to get it but I do order enough for 2 weeks at a time so I don’t have to worry about running out for 2 weeks then I have a week to start checking for it to be in stock and sometimes it is a day or even 3 before I can order it but I’ve never run out because it was out of stock, I just plan ahead.

This is a great feed for my old overweight PPID mare. It checks all of the boxes I need for her including low NSC, vitamins, minerals, and probiotics. It’s not super palatable on its own – she finishes her hay before she’ll touch this feed – but with no added sweeteners, that’s not surprising.

My major criticism is how much this feed has gone up in price during the last 2 years. I’ve stopped buying it entirely and switched to cheaper hay pellets and shredded beet pulp to carry the mineral mix from my local vet.

TL;DR: good feed; bad pricing.

After much debate, I decided to switch my entire barn over to Triple Crown Complete. I must say it was not a wise choice! Due to the size of our barn we order a lot of feed. Regretfully, I am sorry to report that I found whole corn in every single bag.

It wasn’t a lot of whole kernels but if I purchase a grain that prides itself on “No Added Corn” I expect my feed to not have corn in it. More specifically, they advertise, “Corn Free”. I contacted the company and was asked to provide lot numbers, etc.

, because it could have been a milling issue. Well, I purchased a few bags that came from a different lot and distributor to rule out the milling issue and they ALSO had corn in it. For me, this was a big concern, not about a handful of scattered kernels, but more specifically on the deceptive advertising.

It makes me wonder what else is hiding in the feed. We have since switched our feeds to Purina Enrich Balance and couldn’t be happier!.

I switched to this feed because of the way its processed. No grain. My other feed claimed to have NO CORN and I kept finding corn in several bags. Mistakes happen but this was an on going problem for me.

My horse can gain weight by smelling water. I have no problem using this feed with her weight. Switched to Triple Crown chopped forage because she developed heaves. This has helped with that issue a lot.

I do mist each feeding with a little water to just slow down her eating. She is like a Hoover vacuum cleaner sucking it up. Great products. So thankful TS starting selling this product.

I found this feed when I couldn’t get THRIVE in my area. This is a great second and have been using it for 5 + years. Extrusion is a process in which feed is cooked under high pressure with high temperatures for a short time.

The steam process breaks down the feed structures to make the nutrients more available. This pre-digestion process can make feeds up to 30% to 40% more digestible than standard pellets or whole grains.

This is how TOTAL EQUINE processes their feed. This is more soluliable and better than pellets IMHO.

This is the best feed. I have been feeding it for almost 2 years. It has helped with coats, feet and even a horse that had severe sweet itch. It is good for my old horse who has teeth issues ( I soak it) and pre Cushing’s.

Can’t say enough good about this feed. The regular feed (non low starch) is excellent too and I can switch between the two with no gastric issues. Thrilled that chewy has it. Makes it super easy to get.

Both farrier,trainer and vets told me to get this food for my older horses. They want me to give them the senior variety and chewy doesn’t carry it so far. Why is this coming from Florida and Kansas when it is made in Weatherford Texas and coming in 2 different deliveries.

The freight costs make this very expensive for us here in Oklahoma. It makes us turn to Tractor supply because of the cost. Stillwater has it there but not in OKC area.

Our 20 year old mare was exhibiting some signs of Cushings and we had her tested. One test was pre-Cushings positive but two others were negative. Even so, we decided to be proactive about her condition and start her on a regiment of feed and hay containing less sugars.

Triple Crown Lite fits the bill. She did not seem to mind the switch from her other feed, and eats it fine. Plus her weight had evened out, her neck is much less crested, and she appears to be feeling her boss mare self.

Highly satisfied.

We purchased a weanling from his breeder In January & started transitioning him to Purina Ultium Growth. Now 8 months later, he is gorgeous & healthy. He looks amazing & he loves his food. His picture was recently posted on FB & comments were basically “this is not a normal, awkward looking yearling.

he is beautiful”. When the pictures were taken, he had not been brushed for 4 days & he just glistens. His skin & coat are amazing & he has not had a bath. He is radiant, & I think much credit goes to his diet.

We started this when our Colt was 14 months. His overall physique has improved greatly. His coat has improved as well as his muscular structure. We will continue with this feed for some time.

I have two 2018 foals, now yearlings and they look fabulous. We’ve been using this product since the kiddos were weaned at 6 months. On Ultium growth I’m not seeing fatty deposits and as they grow no ribbyness, just very well rounded.

Both horses are growing wonderfully. My farrier is happy, my neighbors are happy. Shiny coats on the kiddos. Any scratches from rough play or goofing off heal nicely. I look forward to continue using Ultium Growth into the future.

I was introduced to GroNWin when I had my old horse at a boarding barn in Ohio. After leaving that barn I kept him on it since he was a super easy keeper and didn’t require any concentrate with his forage availability.

Unfortunately my old guy has since passed, but I have made a move to South Carolina and gotten a new horse. The new horse does require some concentrated feed to maintain weight, but he still doesn’t receive the “recommended” amount so I feed this as a top dress and the vet always compliments how shiny and healthy his hair coat looks! I am also feeding this by weight recommendation to a mini horse who I have to be very careful about how much forage he even gets so I am happy to know he is getting his nutritional needs met through this balancer.

I will always recommend GroNWin to anyone who has an easier keeper that still needs nutritional requirements met!.

While we are still in the “change over mode” introducing this product to horses, so far there have been no problems. Horses seemed to like it and did not turn up their noses at first introduction. We are still on the half & half while we use up former feed and it will be awhile until are on it 100%.

They don’t require a lot of grain. However, in comparing ingredients to former feed, Buckeye Gro ‘n Win seems to cover everything we need and not an excess of other ingredients that are unnecessary in their case, and it should work out fine.

(Note: My horses are on 24-hr free range pasture and hay (orchard grass/fescue) as needed when weather is bad and pasture is thin or covered with snow, and only get a heaping cup of grain once a day so they can get their regular supplements.

It works for us. ).

I am super satisfied with Buckeyes Gro ‘N’ Win pellets. I’m feeding 4 horses on it ranging in sizes and age. *Merlin Pendragon is a orphan foal raised on a bucket from 7 days old. He is now 5 months and has completely weaned himself off the ultra 24 milk replacer for the Gro ‘N’ Win pellets.

*Flying Pegasus is pushing 30 years old and missing teeth. He is getting the Gro ‘N’ Win and Ultimate finish 25 and in 1 week we saw a huge change in his weight. *Jewelers Man is 22 and he’s on it to help his coat stay smooth and shiny as well as help grow his mane and tail and he’s looking amazing.

*Belle is a 22 registered Clydesdale. Her tail is docked but since adding the Gro ‘N’ Win to her feeding she tail has gotten much longer and her mane is amazing. All my horses love the pellets and I’d recommend them to anyone.

However I do wish they would come in a larger bag. Feeding 4 horses lile mine the 30 lb bags don’t last long.

A good feed when I compared it to the other brands in TSC. If only it would stay in stock. I have to go to great lengths to have it on hand. Lot of out of stocks and I am told it’s a seasonal item. Like, duh, this is the time now, foals are being born and mare and foals are needing this special nutrition for months to come and foals will need into Spring.

My girl loves it. The quality is not what is was even 3 weeks ago. Lots of powder. I have seen the same thing with sweet feed. Doesn’t slow her down though. She is doing great on this feed.

I have had my four easy keepers on Empower Topline Balance for over a year and they are thriving. My 27 year old appy has pretty much been a lifelong pasture puff due to back issues. He had developed a ridiculously bad sway back since going totally blind over 8 years ago.

He is looking much better. My 27 year old dun buckskin QH has been hauling me around for most of the past 21 years and looks amazing. His hooves, mane and tail look better than they ever have. My 22 year old black QH, who is retired with a bad knee, is keeping her topline AND her color.

This is the first time my 13 year old sooty buckskin Percheron/QH has ever been able to lose weight and get the ‘recommended’ amount of anything because she is an air fern, and just blows up with any grain.

Her dapples are amazing!.

Let me begin by stating that this product may actually be wonderful if your horse likes the taste. I don’t feed my horse the recommended amount of grain, but wanted to be sure he was still getting all the protein, macro and micro nutrients he needs as an aging horse and losing topline.

I knew to gradually increase the amount of balancer into his current feed until he was getting 1lb of the balancer by day 7-10. However, my horse disliked the pellets so much he completely went off his feed, and I should have known better than to be persistent thinking he would give in, because my horse lost at least 50lbs in a week time with amble, free choice hay and pasture.

I’m at a loss and will be returning the bag. Disappointed, I wish they had a bit more flavor to be more enticing, but I understand this is made for horses that don’t need the extra calories. Just not for my horse!.

I like this because it’s a balancer, so I can feed less volume and get the same nutrients as in a regular feed. My 23 year old mare can no longer have alfalfa and was losing her topline. I chose this because it contains no alfalfa and has the topline nutrients she needs.

After one month, I saw a difference and now, after two months, she’s almost back to normal. She has a tendency to get plump, so I may need to reduce the amount she gets. This is a good value.

My colt has refused alfalfa pellets before rice bran and even Triumph feeds heck his refused 5 different Purina feeds. I was at my wits end since he’s still growing and needed his platinum performance once a day at least.

I’m very happy to repeat that he eats 2lbs of this feed once a day and has been for the past 2 months! I’m a little disappointed that this feed doesn’t have low sugar/starch but I love that it’s a fixed formula.

So I say this is a clean fresh feed that is picky eater approved. So I say the feed is clean Bible.

Product arrived packaged well, in good condition. The pellets were fresh. And my horses really liked it. Would order it again if it was in stock.
