20 Best Fattening Feed For Horses (2023 Updated)

I’ve used this product serveral times on several different times. My family rescues abused and neglected horses. We tried this product to try and increase the amoung of weight gain on them. Every time we add it to the feed for the next little while the horse looks amazing.

But as soon as we would try to pull them off (slowly or immediately) they would loose everything they had gained on the weight gainer. So if you need a little bit of weight to look good for a while go ahead and use it.

However if you want to actually have the horse gain weight don’t bother. I’ll just stick with what actually works, good quality hay, excercise, and 1 qt of rolled oats a day. Palatability: 1.

I have used Well Solve low starch food for a few years for several of my senior horses. While it definitely helps get the weight off, after a few weeks, my horses stop eatting it because it tastes bad.

I have to mix it with something else. I feel like I need to feed something just a little higher in starch so that my horses will keep eatting without me having to mix up a batch of something!.

I bought WellSolve for my 17 year old Percheron mix gelding. He is prone to laminitis and I suspect he is Insulin Resistant. He’s not at all overweight, in fact he’s a bit on the thin side so I was looking for a feed that would give him nutrients/energy without the sugar/starch.

He’s only been on it a week, getting one pound in the morning and one pound at night but I can already see a difference- not as lethargic. Other grains/ration balancers we’ve tried seemed to do more harm than good but this one fits the bill and glad I found it!! Thank you Purina!!! He also loves the taste and it smells good- like a good, clean, natural feed.

I bought a 2yr Thoroughbred he was very under weight and poor coat and hooves. I started feeding him Wellsolve L/S because of the low sugar and strach. I knew I had feed him large amount of feed and didn’t want make him hot from bunch sugar and starches.

I tried this, fed him 3 times a day without having to feed alot of expensive supplements. His coat and hooves look great because of the ingredients and biotin. His all over muscle tone and idea weight are amazing now.

I started using this about 5 months ago. During breeding season. One of my stallions lost weight. Used this and after 2 weeks he started gaining. His coat is shiny and he now looks the best he ever has.

I now have all of my horses on this along with there regular grain. This has worked better than weight builder or any other product I have ever used. Highly recommended. Now that my stallion is back to normal I’m still using it.

I was thrilled to find Ultimate Finish now available at Chewy. com. I don’t have a local Buckeye Feeds supplier so I had been special ordering this product through a local feed store. It was a big hassle each time I had to do it.

Now I can order from Chewy and have the product delivered, it arrived within 2 days. Buying 2 bags qualifies for free shipping so it even ended up a little bit cheaper for me to buy from Chewy. I couldn’t be happier! For anyone curious about the product itself, I was first introduced to Ultimate Finish when I adopted my thoroughbred through New Vocations Racehorse Adoption in 2009.

This is the product they used to help put weight on the horses coming off the track. I used it for weight gain at first, but now my horse holds his weight well so I use it just as a top dressing for healthy fats and vitamins.

I increase it a little if he begins to look tucked up, and I have good results using this instead of an increase in grain to add a little weight. I have no issues with a hot horse from using this product, and my horse gobbles it up.

I have looked at other products to add omegas or for weight gain because special ordering this product was always such a hassle for me, but I believe this one is the best out there. Thank you Chewy. com for adding this to your product line!.

I have been using this product for about 4 years on a Shetland pony mini cross and a mini horse they have been overweight and now they are at a perfect weight. Both my boys have ended up with laminitis in their senior years.

One is 29 and the other is 28. I also give them a few handfuls of equine senior so they will take their medication (just a sweet bite) lol. I highly recommend this product I believe its the best one on the market! I just wish there were more coupons available for these products ! My horse is on a thyroid medicine, but otherwise sound and healthy. I don’t ride very often and thus he battles weight gain. Basically, he needs NO DAILY GRAIN. I am concerned for his overall health, longevity and his hoof health.

So, at the boarding stable, I requested that he only be fed a cup of the feed they use to provide him something when the other horses were being fed. Again, he doesn’t NEED to be grained at all, but I understand feeding time woes if one horse doesn’t get fed.

Plus, he needed something to mix the powdered thyroid meds with and water down. Switching to a low-fat food meant that I had to provide the product to the barn. I went one step further, and provide containers of this product for each day of the week.

I also provide a vitamin supplement. My horse still battle weight, but has slimmed down quite a bit. Plus, he eats all the food (wet with his meds), and therefore I know he’s getting his meds.

I recently found out My horse has navicular , he had gained weight. I had to find a feed to help him lose some weight. He loves Wellsolve W/C and he is starting to lose some weight. With his new shoes with wedges and losing weight he is starting to be more active.

The price is great and it has a smell of real nutritious ingredients.

I bought this for a 22 year old stallion who is very picky about everything (hay, water, feed). His coat was dull and he was thin coming out of winter. Added 2 oz (smelled a bit like apples when I opened the bag) to feed and mixed it around.

He sniffed his food, gave it a taste, and then proceeded to eat it all. Within a week his coat went from dull to shiny and he appeared less gaunt. He also appears to have a better appetite (consumes his hay) and drinks more water.

I highly recommend this product!.

My senior had lost weight before I noticed (dental issues) and the accelerator (mixed into alfalfa mush) helped put it back on relatively quickly. It’s not overnight but definitely works if you stick with it.

Also helped slick up his coat. He’s all filled in now and is a gorgeous old man.

I have been giving this to one of my horses who seemed to have been losing weight. I’m not exactly sure if it really has been helping her or not but at least she doesn’t seem to be losing anymore weight.

Perhaps it she is on it a few more months, I might see a difference. She does however take it when I shake it into her regular feed so I am happy for that.

I have an older horse that has been a hard keeper all his life, but lately his appetite has been lessening. I had the vet look at him and he said he was fine. I had to do something! So I ordered Hard Keeper.

I am normally skeptical about supplements but decided to give this a try. My baby is a 19 year old quarter/paint gelding. He is a big boy and has always been an easy keeper and very healthy. This winter he spiked a fever of 104.

3 and became lethargic with no know cause. He came out of it OK but dropped a lot of weight and started looking his age. His blood work is all normal and he won’t eat grain with oil on it so I tried this.

Bought this product based on great reviews. I was hopeful that my 33 year old mare would pick up some weight using this product, but unfortunately, she turned her nose up at the product. It does have a strong smell.

I tried not using full strength, mixing it with some water, and also with some molasses. No dice. Wouldn’t even try a bit of it. One of my other horses is notorious for eating anything, but he also wouldn’t touch it.

A sales rep kindly guided me through the return, which was nice, still very disappointed since I really need this mare to gain some weight prior to winter.

I have been feeding Omolene 500 for over 2 years now to all my horses. I have noticed less stomach issues. Better overall condition. Their hooves are stronger. Their temperament has changed. I highly recommend 500 to anyone.

You will not regret it. My vet always compliments us on the condition of our horses.

I love every Purina Omolene. Best Feed in my opinion. We give this to our most Active Horses. The ones with the most high intensity work. They Love it! Keeps them very strong, healthy and energized. Hooves look great! Hair and Fur is soft and Shiny.

No Complaints, We Feed this Winter through Summer!.

Excellent grain! We switched to this from the Triple Crown Senior, and this is just what my 21 year old mare needed! My mare is very active and in excellent condition,but we quickly recognized being on a high fat grain wasn’t what she needed.

Our TS manager strongly encouraged me to switch it up to go with this to give her more protein amongst other things. My mare really enjoys the flavor, too. She is always begging for more.

I’ve always intended to write to Purina about how impressed I am with Purina Senior feed, but never got around to it. A recent e-mail asking for feedback prompted me to act. About 2. 5 years ago, after using another brand of horse feed for many years, I noticed our horses were just not looking as robust as I’d hope they would.

They were receiving all the proper nutrients via grain and forage. Some took supplements and some were on maintenance medications. They were all regularly vetted and had yearly dental work and farrier work every 5 weeks.

I did some research and after many weeks decided to switch our herd to Purina Senior and Enrich Plus. I like that Purina Senior has a fat pellet called Amplify and also sold Amplify separately in the event a horse needed additional fat (due to increased work, age-related changes, need for additional calories or other considerations).

I also like that Purina Senior is a complete feed which is a consideration with an aging herd. While I didn’t have high expectations I was truly impressed with our results. After only 30 days I noticed increased energy, body condition improvement, shiny coats, dappling, and a brightness in our seniors that was great to see again.

Our herd continues to thrive on Purina Senior and Enrich Plus. We will be a customer for many years to come. Thank you!.

I was worried about the weight loss on our Very Special older Broodmare Momma Faye. Started her on your Product Purina Senior and she is filling in through her topline and hips so much better than before.

She lets me know that she Loves the taste of it by nickering like crazy for it. I think the extra fiber in it helps since her teeth are getting much shorter and she is starting to ball up her hay. With the colder weather up our way in SD no grazing is available which she can still do, so I needed to be ahead of the cold and get weight on her to head into the colder months.

Purina Sr has made her really fill in I could start to see the difference in the first 2 weeks which is making me happy. She has a great personality, great bloodlines, and has produced some great babies for us so it is time for us to return the favor and take the best care of her as possible even though her Momma days are over.

My horse is 25 y. o. , and doing great on the senior feed. He gets more in the winter, and able to cut back in the summer when he’s on pasture. I’m fortunate that he self regulates on pasture, and has great conformation.

I continue to exercise him regularly with riding, mostly walking and trotting, but he will go into a lope on his own, once I get him conditioned for the summer. I used Strategy, until a couple of years ago and switched to the senior feed on my vet’s recommendation.

I used to Feed 12/12 sweet feed with oats, but this feed has both so has made feeding time alot easier! My overactive horse is unable to eat alot of grains bc he loses weight, but he has not lost 1 lb since switching over! He’s a big fence-walker, especially when he isn’tbeing rode much so im always needing a feed that is able to keep up with his calorie demands.

This definitely past the test. A++.

I have used this product for 3 years on my cremello gelding. Ultium competition works phenomenally!! My gelding has never looked better! Covered in dapples, thick, healthy mane and tail. His weight and muscle tone are balanced, we LOVE this product! The product is high quality, consistent with consistent results- I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who want their horse to look and feel it’s best!.

I had great success with this feed for a gelding in his 30’s when combined with Equine Senior and Amplify. He bloomed on this combination as his teeth were failing over time as he “ran out of tooth”, so to speak.

Now I am adding Ultium feed for my 23 year old TB who is a very picky eater. She loves it! She is also fed Enrich Plus and Amplify. Recently she is not consuming enough Amplify but is finding the Ultium more to her liking.

I will likely phase out the Amplify as I increase the Ultium.

We tried my horse on multiple Purina feeds but he wasn’t putting on weight. 40 pounds of hay/day plus 9 pounds of Omelene 200, then Strategy, then switched to Triple Crown Senior before giving up and coming back to Purina Senior at my vet’s advice.

Wowza! Not only did he put on 150 pounds in 3 1/2 weeks, but we were able to drop his hay intake to 20 pounds/day. Purina Senior is a game changer. He’s now on Senior Active and loves it. Thanks Purina!.

My mare has been on this for about 5 months now and I can’t say enough good things. She has trouble keeping weight on due to slower digestion from colic surgery; she also isn’t a big eater and often picky.

Than supplement has worked really well for her. I noticed a small difference within the first month and still more the second. I did up her to 3 scoops and the results have been amazing. Best part is she loves to eat it! We have tried giving her oil in the past with no luck- so grateful to have found this product.

I have had my 30 yoa mare on this for two months. Not really enough tome to really see results but it’s the only weight gain supplement that she will eat. I tried many others but she is an extremely selective eater and this is the only one she will have anything to do with.

I’ve been trying to get weight on my 25 year old gelding with no luck. This product did smell lovely, but I didn’t see any results. He had no problem eating it, but he’s also not a picky eater.

I have a retired horse who is near impossible to keep weight on. We tried this oil, and could see a change within a week. After a month, it was like we had a different horse. He is filling in so nicely, his coat looks great, and he has a new lease on life.

I tried this after using a dry high-fat weight gain for several years on the advice of an aquaintance. It has only been 2 weeks and my old horse has not lost any weight but neither has he gained any.

I find the product messy to use, but it must be highly palatable as neither of my horses hesitated to eat it. I will likely be going back to Manna Pro Senior Weight Management.

I have not been using this product long enough to judge if it works. My complaint is trying to measure out the dose without spilling the contents which is oily and messy. Not sure if I will purchase it again.

After moving cross country and experincing an environment my 3 yr old horse has never seen before she became severly under weight regardless of how much forage, beet pulp, rice bran, grain supplements or additives she was given.

For the first time in 25 years i was at a loss for putting good weight on my horse and attributed the difficulty to the stress of moving and all that comes with it. I began my search for a quality product that would be afordable and get the job done.

I have used DAC OIL in the past and was satisfied but found it was a bit expensive. What i liked about this product first is its price After using my entire first gal. Of equine mega gain i have found it to be extremely affordable long term as it lasted one horse nearly 3 months.

That being said the second thing i loved about this product was that in the first 10 days i could see a visible difference for the better in my horse and now after 3 months she looks like her normal quarter horse self.

She didn’t develop a hay belly but actualy put meat on her bones in all the right places. Also it helped her skin and coat return to its normal silky shine and no more flakey skin. This is a fantastic supplement and i will continue to use it for my horse.

Love it! I’ve had this mare for 12 years. For the past several years she’s alway had puffy back legs and stiffness since she has been on this all the puffiness had gone and the stiffness has lessened! Her hair coat is soft and shiny.

Has help with her feet too. She is my hard keeper! With a very large foal at her side she kept good weight!.

I needed an easy to chew/digest high fat, low starch feed for my senior horse who was recently diagnosed with PPID. The medication reduced his appetite and he wasn’t finishing the feed he was on. I ordered this and he has happily cleaned his bowl since.

The feed texture is really great and easy for him to chew. He has put weight back on since starting Fibrenergy and seems really happy. Really glad Chewy carries this as I couldn’t otherwise get it in my area.

I recently lost my heart horse who was part of a bonded pair. As devastating as it was my other guy was mourning and over a week’s time lost a considerable amount of weight. He’d only eat and drink if I stayed with him, but even still it wasn’t much.

Aged Stallion is thriving after converting from Purina Equine Senior to Triple Crown Senior. Noticeably shifted his muscle mass in top line to firm & lifted along with gut reduced and stools are fewer/less waste more of what he eats is actually becoming fuel, bioavailable vs massive amounts of stools on the PAN product.

Would prefer to use the Lite version w/o molasses and that would have been at 5 stars as I’m not a fan of any added “stuff” not normally in Natural diet if dental was not compromised primarily forage diet with some amino acids in a balancer.

I have had to capitulate to an 89year old who rules the roost and can’t comprehend what is problematic about sugars in the diet/metabolic syndrome which thankfully, this stallion doesn’t seem to show any current signs of this but did prior to converting feed & dramatically shifting away from sweet feed to pelleted & cubes Forage softened with hot water and soaked.

Super happy also with the Standlee forage selection, has made this Horse much happier and dramatic improvement in body condition, stools, digestive and happier mood even as he’s not fussy anymore !.

While we have tried many different sr feeds including purina, estrella fortified, Thrive to name a few, Rice bran, etc. nothing has helped our 18 and 24 yr old gelding the way this has. It has the right amounts of everything.

Beet pulp shreds, rice bran, alfalfa vitamins etc. Our sanctuary seniors have navicular and are hard keepers. This is the first time the 24 yr old appendix quarter has had a topline. For the most part he leads a life of leisure and still has gotten a topline! lol And he is acting like a younger man playing with the 3 yr old.

We have and still are using this feed for our rescues also. The buckskin in the pics was only a 2 month process of grass and sr feed. When someone trys to talk us into another feed compare what it would run us to use the other brand and match the added supplementation and only once would it cost my 10 a month less.

Not a good reason for us to change. And in 2020 they have offered a 25$ card for sending in 12 proofs of purchase. If you don’t use enough to keep them we are happy to get them from you, lol. As for being a pellet and soaking.

They soak up the water so fast that I don’t worry about the boys choking at all. I dump the 3qt scoop maintenance amount for them, into their feed buckets and add the same amount in water or a little more and it is Adios tiny 5/32 pellets.

NO CHOKE WORRIES. We are also ecstatic about Tractor Supply carrying your feed. When we do our fundraiser tables at our 2 area locations we put 2 bags of Triple Crown at the corners of our table and all of the funds we take in those days pays for just that.

I feed Triple Crown Sr. to my rescue horses. It is different from the other ‘Senior’ feeds on the market in that Triple Crown uses a consistent formula. Most ‘Senior’ feeds switch out various grains and sources of grain depending upon what is cheapest at that time of year.

Triple Crown sticks with a consistent formula. Just look, they actually list the ingredients in the grain, rather than just listing the percentages of protein, carbs, etc. Try finding out just what kinds of grains actually make up the other feeds, and you’ll soon realize that they don’t offer details as to how much of it is corn, soy, etc.

I have elderly rescue horses that have serious health issues. I need a Senior formula that is consistently high quality, so my horses don’t react to the change in the formula, or to particular elements in the feed.

I have used Triple Crown Sr. for my rescues for a few years now, and feel confident that I know what I am actually feeding my ‘special needs’ equines. It is a bit higher in price, but I have found that the higher quality of the feed acts as a preventative.

Just one vet visit is expensive enough to wipe out the savings that horse owners think they are gaining by using cheaper feeds. I think of Triple Crown Senior as ‘preventative medicine’. It has been consistently high quality, and pays for itself in reduced vet visits.

All my horses love it! Tasty enough that even my picky eaters will take their meds that are mixed with it. Highly recommended!.

I have a very picky gelding, who also is high anxiety and an in general nervous horse. I’m always worried about if he’s retaining the proper nutrients as horses with anxiety tend to not. I love the added kelp in this to help the absorption so I don’t have to worry so much about what he’s getting.

I originally had him on just hay pellets and supplements but he wasn’t finishing his meals and he LOVES this Blue Bonnet feed. Once I started him on this, he’s eaten every last drop! Thanks Chewy for adding this to your site since I’m in a state where it’s not sold in stores.

I haven’t used this feed long enough to share results on how it works – but because the bag seems poorly made I won’t purchase more. I ordered two bags to test on my Miniature Horses. Because the “pull string” system is weak, one bag was already opened and spilled when it arrived and the other opened as soon as I lifted it out of the Chewy box.

It sounds like an awesome feed but without more secure packaging I won’t be ordering again.

Excellent soft dust free feed for all stages. Low feed rate. Makes horses perform well and look amazing. Love Bluebonnet feeds, their feed mills are SAFE from any possible cattle medication cross contamination.

Not many feed companies can say the same! Horses love this feed and it keeps them eating on the road when things can get a little stressful. Happy healthy horses!.
