20 Best Fat Separator Cooks Illustrated (2023 Updated)

I have used this for several years after replacing several cheaper versions. This is a MUCH better option. I make broth by boiling the bones and skin from Costco chickens. There is quite a bit of fat and this pitcher is the best way to skim that off to discard.

What is terrific about this product is that it is made of a better quality, or higher temperature rated plastic than the cheap versions. You can put hot liquid in it without worrying that it will develop cracks.

I have even given it as a gift to friends and family who cook.

I thought this fat separator worked really well. It was the first time I’ve ever used it before. What I used before was a Ziploc bag inside of a container and it was always a mess every time I had to cook.

This thing was really easy it separated the fat and all you had to do was tilt out the juice from underneath and if you needed some fat to use as a base for your gravy you could just spoon it off the top.

Overall I give it five stars thanks.

I bought this before the “big gravy” holidays of Thanksgiving & Christmas, and it made making gravy so much easier. The spout stopper prevents any leaks up the spout. The opening is large enough to manage pouring drippings/gravy from a larger pan.

I had been meaning to buy one of these for years and I am sorry I waited so long. I use it all the time for now for soups and stews and whatever else could use a little less fat!.

I gave this product only four stars but NOT because of the product–it’s great! The reason for the rating is that delivery was promised by a given date but the product didn’t arrive until a week later.

That’s shoddy customer service from what I thought was a reputable company. But the separator: well-designed; sturdy; ergonomic; and large enough to handle any juices from your favorite meats. I’m glad I bought it!.

I thought this was the neatest fat separator ever made, a MUST have for every cook, until the red valve on the bottom came apart. I only realized this defect while pouring hot turkey pan drippings from a roasting pan into it and liquid began pouring out the bottom, all over my counter, my kitchen and my blouse! What a messy and embarrassing disaster with a house full of hungry guests.

And once this red rubber valve comes apart there is no fixing it and it must be thrown away. I usually love OXO products but not in this case, really disappointed.

Finally got a chance to use it and it didn’t disappoint. Use to try and spoon fat from pots only to leave a lot. Worth every penny. in the center of the bottom, there’s actually a piece of a silicone tube that is pinched closed.

When you depress the trigger in the handle, it opens up the tube. thus draining the liquid below the fat. Once the fat gets near to the bottom release the trigger,.

Love the size of this separator. I would have liked an attachment or something to protect the spout while being moved and pushed around in the cupboard. Not all family and friends appreciate it’s user value.

Liked the idea of having a separator made of glass. I was a bit taken aback by the light weight, almost fragile feel of it when it was un-boxed. Even the wife mentioned how apprehensive that she was when washing it, but it’s been adequate, so far.

Give it a try. you really can’t go *too* wrong at the price point.

The OXO Good Grips 4 Cup Fat Separator is a BIG help in the kitchen! I used it on Thanksgiving and I really appreciated not only having it, but all the work that went into designing it. You install the spout stopper and pour the drippings through the strainer.

The strainer catches the solid pieces that you don’t really want in your gravy and the spout stopper keeps the liquid from going into the spout until you’re ready for it. Let the drippings sit and the fat will rise to the top.

Once it separates, take the stopper out of the spout and pour the liquid that you want to keep into your pot or container. Pour until the fat gets close to going into the spout and discard what’s left.

With the built in lip, it keeps the solids left in the strainer from falling out while pouring.

I don’t use this for gravy, but it’s perfect for pouring laundry liquids into the tiny, hard-to-get-to reservoir in my front-loading HE washer. It’s indispensable. Also perfect for pouring water into my steam iron.

I did not see the capacity of this, it’s only 8 ounces. Way too small for anything. Not worth the time or effort to return though, so I’ll chalk it up to another purchase that was a waste of money.

I bought this about a month ago, just after Thanksgiving when the need for it really arose. It’s not the cheapest one they carry, but I wanted glass because I’m using it with hot liquids. I am glad I paid a little extra for a better product.

This one works great, and the stainless steel sieve at the top filters out the solid bits from the meat drippings very well. It’s dishwasher safe and big enough to handle drippings from even the biggest roast.

I wanted a glass fat separator because I knew the liquid I poured into it would be hot. The quality of this separator is well worth the price. Easy to use, easy to handle, and easy to clean.

The gadget works well. Made of light glass. Must be handled with care. Suggest must come with flexible handle brush to clean the spout

Very well made. Easy to use. Works great. Runs through dishwasher and looks like new. Much larger than I imagined. Holds 4 cups. Drains out the bottom like magic. I am sure it will last along time. Great price also.

I used to always skim off the fat from soups with wads of paper towels, or set the stock pot in the fridge overnight to remove it. This product saves time, is super easy to use and a breeze to clean! I have several Amco products and some are over 40 years old and still going strong! Get this item, you won’t regret it!.

I used to use the old style separator. The kind where you pour it. This is such a step up from those. This is well made and makes it so easy to separate the good stuff from the grease to make healthier and full flavored sauces and gravy.

This worked perfectly this Thanksgiving! It was nice to see all the fat float to the top and to know that I wasn’t putting that in to my dressing, but just broth.

Have used the separator for chicken broth and gotten the fat separated off the broth without any problems. Really like the comfortable grips on the handle to hold the cup. I would recommend this product.

2-Cups is great size for a smaller amount of gravy or broth to separate the fat.

This is expensive for a fat separator but it is so worth it. I have had it for 2 years now and it just doesn’t compare to any of the pour out of the top separators. It works by releasing the broth, gravy, or whatever you’re making out of the bottom.

The strainer and top portion unlock from the base for easy cleaning. Not sure about the other reveiw-it is very durable and has gone through several Thanksgivings and Christmases and through the dishwasher without issue.

I use it year round when making chicken or ham stock and during the holidays for gravy. Everyone that uses it also comments on how great it is. Would make a good gift for the home cook.

While it is too bad that you have to spend $35 for a gadget to accomplish what looks like a simple task, this item works superbly well. It is easy to use and very effective. I took it in its maiden voyage recently by preparing a notoriously greasy dish: braised short ribs of beef.

The results were amazing as I was left with a practically grease-free broth which was delicious. It is nice to find a kitchen gadget that actually does what it says it will do. I strongly recommend this item.

I highly do not recommend this product. I bought this to use for a gravy I was making on Christmas Day last year. I used it once, cleaned it and put it away until next use. I just recently had my parents over for a pot roast dinner and pulled it out of the cabinet to use for the second time.

Apparently the bottom piece broke off from only 1 use! Half of the gravy for my roast went all over the kitchen counter! Don’t know how it broke or why?? I only used it once. It says dishwasher safe.

So it couldn’t have been that. I am online looking for a better model and decided I should warn other consumers about this particular model. Hope this helps.

I got this product right before thanksgiving in anticipation of using it to make a delicious gravy sauce for my bird. The design is very nice and the handle is comfortable for holding and pouring. The measurements up and down the sides are helpful as well and let’s this serve as a dual measuring cup.

The only flaw is that the directions are not clear enough on the packaging to truly understand how to use this product. If you don’t understand the science behind separating fat then it is not easy to identify where the put the stopper when the product is in use.

This arrived just before Thanksgiving and I was excited. My gravy was always good but had that touch of greasiness to it. It was amazing not to pull out separate tools. Just poured into the cup, sieve prevented lumps going through for a smooth gravy.

This separated the grease and everyone raved at how great the gravy tasted. The only con was that the spout should be shaped differently and wit would be nice to have a lid replace the sieve to store in fridge.

This is the second similar one that I have bought. Excellent for fat free gravy. Must remember not to put fat in straight from the oven..- cracked it- That is why I have had to buy another.

Smaller than I thought but nevertheless very useful. Have used it only once, so far. Hopefully the plastic will stand hot temperatures.

My son in law is a chef (in his own kitchen, but he’s very good!) We were chatting about getting the “fat” out of the meat juices after roasting. I saw this little gem and thought what a fabulous idea–to have the liquid pour out of the spout but from the BOTTOM-so the fat (on top) is left floating and you get all the good stuff for gravy! I get it.

It’s not rocket science. BUT every holiday we rave about this little item. I think every home should have one. and if you know someone who loves to cook, they’ll appreciate this!.

I had one of these before years ago. Yes, it is plastic and will crack eventually and I suspect the heat from the dishwasher is a little too hot, may have had something to do with it cracking so this one I’m washing by hand.

If you make gravies weather it’s a small amout or a lot at one time this gravy fat seperator works great.

I had never had one of these and ordered it after making chicken stock to can and having to dip a hundred times trying to get the fat off the top. This would have worked so much better but you have to have enough liquid in it to get the pour spout above the level of the fat.

it holds about 4 cups. Great idea, but not sure if it is worth $10.

I have had a glass gravy separator like this before, and just as before, this works really well. They are a bit delicate, but with care they can last for years (as my last one did). Most gravy separators on the market are plastic.

I first bought one of these six years ago and used it to separate the fat from the juices of my meat but then I stupidly dropped it. I was very annoyed with myself – and I know that this will sound silly over a kitchen object but I cried.

I had to find another, the food just didn’t taste the same as it removes so much of the fat and just leaves behind so much flavour. It’s such a tactile little thing it looks and feels great. Goes in the dishwasher so it cleans thoroughly.

If you don’t believe me, try it I’m sure you’ll love it too!.

Very fragile so returned as would easily break. Also the spout somehow seemed wonky.

My first separator accidentally fell and broke irreparably. I was pleased to find this exact, replacement product. In fact, the deeper top strainer lid’s design is much better. So relieved to find a replacement because the release mechanism is easiest design from other grease separators.

I use this year after year. It’s so so so useful. Best version I’ve ever seen.

Holds a good amount of liquid. The liquid drains out of the bottom with a squeeze of the handle,leaving the fat in the let it sit a few minutes before releasing fluid. or if you havehaver time, refrigerate 15 minutes.

Ordered this to make Thanksgiving gravy and it arrived just in time for Turkey Day. Easy to use and handle, separates the fat from the yummy part of the drippings. Simply squeeze the handle to release the good drippings without the fat to make delicious gravy.

Several years ago I purchased a plastic fat separator and loved the ease of removing the broth from the fat. However, after a few uses, it cracked and started leaking. So when I saw the glass version I thought my problems were solved.

I do love the size (1 quart) but have reservations about using it for 2 reasons: 1. The glass is thinner than I envisioned and I am afraid that when I put it in my sink to clean it, the spout and/or top may nick and break; and 2.

the spout is curved at the bottom and it will be difficult to clean that area. I suggest you look for a spout that has a strait, rather than curved entry to the container.

I got this seperator so I could make homemade chicken and beef stocks for soups, stews, sauces, paella, gumbos, jambalayas and gravies and I am not disappointed! I purchased the Power Pressure XL previously from this website and can have stock ready to use in about an hour and a half.

Otherwise you have to cook the stock for hours on the stove, then let the stock cool for hours, then refridgerate overnight to remove the fat before being able to use it. Well not anymore! Leftover stock freezes well.

This is a good priced product. It works very well and does what it says by separating out the meat juices from the fat to quite a low level. This makes it possible to produce great gravy with the fewest calories! The bad side.

the product is NOT dishwasher safe and I was very disappointed with this. I understand about 75% of households have dishwashers nowadays, so I think this is a major negative for this gravy separator.

People do not like washing up greasy things!.

Partly my fault. I think this is just like a sieve for gravy, just to separate any bits so gravy is smooth. I thought it was to separate juices from fat of cooked meat. If it was meant for that, then it’s quite poor as spout is very hard to clean once used.

This is 400ml which I would say is minimum size considering some will be fat, I filled this to the brim with juices from a 1. 5kg silverside joint. It’s made of hard plastic apart from the lid which is softer.
