Beaufort is one of the most iconic Barbour jackets and for a good reason. It’s stylish (in a timeless, non fashion-forward way) and very useful during transition seasons. The look and feel of the waxed cotton is not for everyone but these jackets tend to age very well, loosing the slightly shiny and crinkly appearance and developing a unique patina.

The Beaufort shouldn’t look out of place in a wide variety of situations, equally appropriate for commuting to work, running errands around the city or going for a non-technical relaxing hike in cooler weather.

The sizing could be tricky – most online advice recommends sizing down from your usual dress jacket size, but I found that for me that results in a slightly restrictive fit, fine with a shirt and a very light sweater but definitely lacking extra room for any serious insulating layers.

The other aspect some may find to be a negative is the waxed cotton material itself. It makes the jacket quite a bit heavier and stiffer than any modern technical outdoor jacket (an unfair comparison, I know).

The wax finish tends to wear out over time and if used frequently, the jacket needs to be rewaxed which can be done at home or by either Barbour or Orvis in the US. The breathability is also not stellar, any modern membrane jacket will run circles around Barbour in that department.

But then again, Barbour is not in the same niche as an Arc’teryx hardshell, and both can coexist in the same closet and be useful in different circumstances. I have no issues with the construction, stitching and overall quality, the Barbours are known to be very well-constructed and lasting for years and decades.

I will be returning mine but not because I am unsatisfied but only to rebuy it in a larger size. If you manage to get these on sale and your lifestyle has a place for a heritage piece like this, it’s well worth adding it to your wardrobe.

This is my second Barbour jacket; my first purchase was a used Border jacket which I absolutely love. I’ve never bought a new one before, but I can tell you it’s worth buying new. The reason for this is, of course, pride of first ownership.

One gets to make new memories with a brand new jacket that YOU get to break in. I chose Barbour as an outer jacket again because it is simply hands down the most reliable, rugged, stylish, and functional jacket I’ve ever worn.

I had a Beaufort in the past, just in brown. I really liked being able to stuff things in the back of the jacket when I was out and about in town. Great hiding place for snacks! Lol. If you are into hunting, the rear of the jacket is designed to stuff your spoils in.

Very handy. I’ve worn my Barbour jacket at an outdoor concert at the Malkin Bowl in Vancouver. It was a three hour concert out of doors and it rained and misted rain the whole evening. When we returned home, my sister was soaked through.

She couldn’t believe that from my head down to my knees I was dry as a bone (my jacket had the hood – also worth the extra money). I, myself, was thoroughly impressed that I was able to experience how robust these jackets are under trying conditions.

Highly, highly recommended for purchase. And you cannot beat Orvis customer care and after sales attention.

I’ve wanted one of these for a long time, but in all honesty I thought the price too steep for a casual field coat. I ended up buying something similar at half the price from a well-known outfitter. The first time I wore it in a light rain I was soaked.

Fortunately, they took it back and I ponied up the difference for the real thing from T-Nuck. Regarding the Bedale, it’s a really handsome jacket. I did a lot of research on sizing and although I usually wear a 42 coat, I bought the Bedale in a 40.

That was a good decision. It fits well while still leaving some room for a light fleece or sweater. Unless wearing a sport coat or a very heavy sweater beneath it, a 42 would probably hang like a tent.

By itself it is not a winter weather coat, having no insulation other than what the shell and thin liner provide. But it’s not really advertised as one and there are liners available if desired. The other thing is that zipper.

For U. S. guys, the pull ring is on the “wrong” side, so that takes some getting used to. Not a big deal though. All in all, it’s a legendary jacket with great attention to detail.

I used to think Carhartt was overpriced. Oh how naive. I’ve been through a lot of brands with a lot of pros and cons but this jacket is a whole new experience standing far above the others. The quality and apparent durability are the first things I noticed.

The outer layer feels very tough, something I won’t worry about ripping on stuff. The sherpa lining is soft and warm, but not that cheap fuzz other guys use, the stuff is dense and durable feeling, super comfortable and warm (though oddly not overly warm but I’ll get to that).

There’s plenty of pockets (2 buttoning chest, 1 zipping inner left, 1 velcro inner right, 2 open down in the usual jacket spot) the waist has a nice stretchy cinch system to keep in the heat and the sleeves have an inner portion at the end that sits snug to the wrist for the same reason.

The hood sits nicely forward providing good rain and wind protection to the face and is lined with the same nice sherpa material that keeps the ears toasty. After putting it on indoors I was surprised I did not quickly overheat as I personally run very hot.

The jacket felt very comfortable and looked great. I couldn’t imagine it keeping me all that warm considering I was not bursting into flames yet wearing it in my warm house as I kept it on for about half an hour but then stepping outside into the snowy rain I immediately felt my legs begin to get cold in the wind, but where the jacket covered remained unchanged.

Sorcery. I stood there a while disbelieving while I remained very comfortable, and then with a smile and a nod I took my magical enchanted jacket back inside. You Get what you pay for, and carhartt doesn’t appear to charge for its legendary name.

Every penny went into quality it seems and that’s what is going to have me coming back.

Excellent quality coat, lightweight yet warm. Nice front pockets, angled correctly so cell phone doesn’t fall out when seated. Best thing was purchasing this through Tractor Supply. I had looked at the usual larger stores but they did not have the color I wanted, but Tractor Supply did.

I got a good sale price on it, too. Unfortunately, the coat was too big and I had to return it. By the time I returned it, the price went up. But a quick call to customer service got me the right size jacket for the original sale price.

I ordered the light blue over dark blue (Dark Mountain, Collegiate Navy). Attractive colors. Light- to mid-weight fleece. Suitable for cool temperatures but need to layer with vest or sweater for cold weather along with windproof jacket.

I bought XXL with the idea that it would be roomy enough for layering. Looks like that will work as it fits over a bulky vest and arm movement isn’t restricted. Elasticized cuffs are not adjustable. Open, large (can easily hold a tablet) pockets inside, behind zippered handwarmer pockets.

Great for casual wear.

I have purchased these exact jackets (color Navy and Black size XL) twice in the past, from Macy’s in Annapolis, MD. Absolutely no issues with store bought jackets. I purchase these jackets because they can be worn over a sweater or sweatshirt comfortably and look great.

I purchased these jackets on-line feeling confident they would be exactly the same (color and size) as the store bought jackets. I was extremely disappointed to say the least. Color was fine, but both jackets fit like medium/large and can only be worn over a tee shirt.

This was my first experience ordering on-line from Columbia and most likely my last. Where is the quality control???.

For as minimal as the insulation is the wax and oil soaked cloth is rather heavy. Not anywhere near the degree of my husband’s winter jacket that actually gives him shoulder pain sometimes but much more than something that thin looks like it should weigh.

I also started getting hot wearing it in the house despite having been sitting with 2 blankets over me to keep warm. The wolf hybrid we mostly call the spastic brained moron helped unpack boxes in her usual over enthusiastic way and says it smells somewhat like the leather stuff she likes to destroy.

She proved it’s durable to investigation by giant hooked claws and jaws like a bear trap but it would likely still be found in pieces if she managed to steal it for long enough. Numerous wallets and a few horse reins have literally been eaten.

There are a ton of snaps on this jacket and several ways to adjust it. The sleeves were coming down to the tips of my fingers but then I found a second snap on the sleeve so now it goes just past my wrist.

I went a size larger with a medium because my measurements were exactly the larger end given for the small. I’m glad I did. I’ve never seen that jackets really have a standardized size since every one with a size chart varies some so it’s true to size in that it will be within the range of inches the size chart lists for the parts measured.

Unfortunately that is not enough parts to completely size it accurately. The waist ended up being the issue when like many jackets there was only chest/bust to go by. I do not have a flat stomach with a slight outline of a six pack like when I was 15 years younger.

Far from it these days. There is also no sleeve length listed so I just took the risk of having to roll the sleeves up if the length needed for my torso ended up too long for my relatively short arms.

It does have a ton of snaps but you can always skip some. You wouldn’t need to do both the inside snaps and the flap over them if there is no blowing rain/snow or you don’t care for the extra protection.

Snaps also tend to get easier to push together with time and use. True for most types of metal connectors or buckles. Zippers break more often and if the jacket gets caught on something the only way for the item to give is to rip (unlikely with this material) or break the difficult to fix zipper.

Then all your money is wasted on a single weak part you can’t easily replace. A snap will simply unsnap with no damage and if installed well will still work many years after a zipper has failed in some way.

Fabric also doesn’t get caught in snaps and cause them to get stuck. The downside I see on this product is the extra long strap that hangs down under your arm off the storm flap. It’s oddly long so if wind does blow it’s just going to lift the flap up plenty high enough to let rain underneath and spook many peoples’ horses.

Putting on and taking off a raincoat around your horse was often one of the challenges in our youth fun shows since so many would try to bolt away from loose, flapping material. If you aren’t actually on a farm/ranch or doing other physical work then you’d likely never encounter the issue of the loose strap except maybe to find it annoying hanging so far down your side under your arm.

If you are doing physical activity it’s far too likely to get caught on things. Since we have western saddles and not Aussie saddles the odds of finding yourself hanging from the saddle horn until the snap gives is quite high.

An overly friendly horse could even partially fit it’s head in the gap and panic. The strap could get caught on tree branches or bushes while hiking with the dogs. While it comes loose when the snaps give that doesn’t mean it won’t cause issues and plenty of wasted time and frustration fixing the result and reattaching the flap.

Considering it doesn’t appear to give a single benefit with that much slack I really wish It just had a second snap to take it completely off instead of being sewn on one end. I might forgo the whole storm flap in order to avoid what seem like guaranteed risks from that one strap.

I’m hoping I can find a way to shorten it instead. It’s the only part of the design that seems completely flawed to me and given it’s part of what makes this particular product unique compared to others it really should have had more attention paid to the possible issues and sized better or given adjustment options.

Pros: Keeps me dry. Pretty unique look. Feels durable. Made of cotton! I am so over wearing plastic. Made in America! I am so over everything coming from China, Indonesia, etc. Cons: The snaps are very tedious to use to close and open the jacket.

A heavy duty zipper for the inner layer would be a significantly quicker and easier way to get the jacket “going. ” They also feel like something is going to eventually be torn if you don’t carefully unsnap them.

I am not a fan of having to smash my finger and the snap into my chest to get it closed up. I would very nearly take the jacket in to have a zipper installed. Buttons/snaps on the outside for looks would be fine.

To pay this much for a jacket and then to have to pay more money to have an easier in/out process seems a little absurd. It doesn’t keep me from recommending it, but that is a design flaw in my opinion.

Wish the sleeves liner was less “sticky. ” Some sort of natural fabric in the sleeves might have made a difference. If you’re at all warm already (working, warmer weather, etc. ) the sensation of that poly lining against the skin will be that much worse.

I was sweating so much inside the jacket on the first use (and not even doing super strenuous work and it was maybe 65 degrees outside), I thought the jacket’s waterproofing was compromised when I took it off and saw how wet my shirt was.

Whatever they claim about it being breathable, I don’t think is possible with any truly waterproof clothing. Just try to wear cotton or wool under it, I guess. Minor complaint: I wish the brown LOOKED brown.

My husband actually thought it was black. It still looks nice, but it would be a lot nicer if it was definitely brown like it looks on the female model in the picture. As an aside: Be careful to measure yourself really carefully before you choose a size.

OTC kindly sent me the comprehensive measurement chart and since I’m 5’3″ with a 38″ chest, I bought an XS, which generally fits me pretty well. However, when I reach forward (which I do a lot as a gardener/landscaper), the sleeves are about.

5-1″ short (hanging down, the length is fine). My sister is similar in size and bought a size S Duster and the sleeves are far too long on her, which is why I didn’t select a small to begin with. It’s not the end of the world, I’m still happy with the jacket, just make sure you get accurate measurements before choosing your size.

I’m glad I didn’t go with the next size up. :).

I don’t normally write a review of a product but this jacket and the Bootlegger Hat have me beyond impressed. I live in Kodiak, AK where it rains, snows, and has high winds. I’m workin outdoors everyday and this jacket and hat have done their job.

I’m someone who puts off a lot of heat but I’ve had to wear several layers to try to stay dry and warm till now with this jacket I can wear a fleece jacket with this jacket and not need an excessive amount of layers.

The customer service was amazin and the jacket and hat shipped out within 24 hrs. It arrived here in less than a week. I’ll be writin a review for the hat as well, Thank you Outback Trading Company!.

Great parka and would recommend. I wanted another one to replace my old one, with similar features such as waist draw string, multiple large pockets, warm and a hood. This one is much better quality than my old one with much better bonuses.

This one has snap button on the hood so it stays out of your face so you can see in the rain without it falling down. The two cuff sleeves are nice so the cold breeze doesn’t go up your arms. The length of the parka is great and the main zip has two zips from the top and bottom so you can loosen it.

Love it to bits. This jacket is designed to be close to body. Im on size 12 but getting size 10. Having said that, i only need a thin shirt to match with this jacket and it would keep me super warm even on 7deg rainy day.

The hoods design when you can take off the faux fur or even the hood completely. I wish it has more pockets inside the clothes. If the inert comes with duck down would be perfectttttt. I simply love it! Oh yea, by the way, this jacket is heavy =).

It’s the second of these that I bought. They are so useful and love that they can be folded up into a bum bag so you can easily pack on a trip without taking up much space. I use a bike to go to the gym early in the morning and the fact this is wind and rain proof makes it super practical and keeps me warm.

This review is for this particular item only. I bought this jacket for my husband a few years ago. He really likes it and planned to wear it on special occasions. However, his old jacket was not usable anymore this winter so he started wearing this Columbia.

He likes how warm and comfortable it is. Unfortunately, the zipper has broken yesterday. It is basically not wearable anymore since it cannot be zipped up. We have owned so many of columbia products for the past ten years, from clothings, footwear to pillows.

Nothing has ever let us down interms of quality except for this jacket.

Excellent product, but the description is misleading. I was searching for a jacket with an “Inside Security Pocket,” thinking it would be the zippered pocket other selections have. There is no zippered pocket inside the jacket.

There is only a cloth liner at the base of the jacket with a sewn compartment that could possibly be considered a pocket. Not necessarily a secure way of holding your phone when engaging in outdoor activities though.

The jacket is quite warm enough for cold weather activities though.

I’m 5’6″ with a long torso, 110 lbs. , 32″ bust, 26″ waist, 36″ hip and I bought size XS and that is the correct size for me. The material is very breathable, dries quick, stretches so there is some give if you’re between sizes, you could err on the small side.

I like the way the seams on the back curve – I think it is more flattering than the Y seams on the cheaper mesh coats. There is one narrow pocket inside, but it’s too narrow for a phone. Maybe a good size for a hair net or a key or a carrot.

The slit “pockets” are fake. Fake pockets should be illegal. But overall it’s pretty comfy and I like being able to wear a coat when a lot of other riders have ditched theirs due to the heat. However, I am extremely disappointed by the buttons, specifically the matte ones for the hunter ring.

I have used this for 3 shows and the matte plastic pieces popped out of 2 of the 3 buttons, leaving only the silver back/edge portion. I cannot find one of the pieces to glue back in, had to color it in with sharpie and hope no one noticed in the ring! I think one may have come out in the wash, even though I followed the washing instructions.

Maybe I should have removed the buttons to wash it, but that seems like pretty big design flaw. The buttons should be a single piece that doesn’t come apart. I would ask for replacement buttons, but I don’t think that would prevent this from happening again.

This is the kind of thing I might not be surprised by in a coat that costs half as much, but for a coat at this price point. yikes. So I will be purchasing shank-back buttons elsewhere.

I returned the the show ring after 17 years away. I could not believe the advances in show clothes fabrics – I was thrilled. This jacket not only looks nice on but its flexibility allows me to move with the horse, is super comfortable as well as light and cool.

Truly unbelievable. I did order a size large to start but it was way too big. I returned for a medium, which is maybe every so slightly snug in an ideal world but totally fine in reality because the fabric stretches and it does look good on me.

I would buy second one in another color in a heart beat and probably will at some point! Anyway, you might think about sizing down, especially if you’re someone who is close between sizes like I am.

I bought this jacket in February for the upcoming show season and wore it today for the first time. It is very stretchy and comfortable. I don’t feel restricted at all, which I normally do in the arm and shoulder areas of most jackets.

It was mid 80’s today and I was still pretty comfortable in it, the fabric is very breathable. It fits me really well, I will probably buy a second one at some point! I also love that they are machine washable, no more taking it to the dry cleaners and not getting it back in time for the next show! Absolutely worth buying.

I got this jacket for Christmas and in less than one month the zipper stopped working and a random hole appeared on the sleeve, causing feathers to seep out. I think there are two major issues with this jacket (especially compared to the Patagonia Down Jacket, which I’ve had for 8 years): 1.

The fabric is so thin that it’s not durable. I don’t see this jacket lasting long for anyone due to the thinness of the material. 2. The zipper is small and feels low quality. I found the zipper to be challenging to zip at times, and didn’t have the durable feel that the Patagonia one has.

I will be returning this and purchasing a new Patagonia Down Jacket instead. Definitely not high enough quality or durable enough for the high price point. This is a miss from Arc’teryx. Also it runs super small.

The Patagonia fits me well in a size small with room to layer. I had to size up to a Medium in the Arc’teryx and still limited room for layers.

So far this jacket has not disappointed, even though I just started wearing it. It runs a bit small. I am usually a women’s medium and there’s a tiny bit of room. The M fits well with just enough room for a couple decent base layers.

But that means it also fits well under my size M shells. The arms are long enough, which is usually a huge issue with midlayer down jackets. This is especially nice since I am using it for bike commuting in the winter.

It was -15C this morning while I was cycling and under my shell, I did not feel any cold leaking through in any spots. The hood is nice and roomy – supposed to be helmet compatible, which I think might be generous, though I haven’t tried yet.

However, it fits over my ponytail/bun very nicely, so I can’t complain. It’s pretty lightweight for the amount of warmth it provides, which means it will be perfect for packing on trips, as well as hunting in cold weather.

The durability remains to be seen, since I only started wearing it. But so far I’m pretty impressed!.

I wanted to love this jacket because it is such a beautiful color (Timelapse). But there are too many design flaws for such an expensive jacket. The fit is off. I am always a size small/XS so I got this in size small so I could layer it but it fit tight around my waist and hips (I’m slim).

This made the pockets, when unzipped, flare out in an unflattering way. The pockets are also placed much too high. The tops of the pockets fell just below my breastbone, so having my hands in the pockets was not comfortable at all.

Perhaps the fit would work better for a short waisted person (I’m average, 5’6” 115lbs). The zipper also feels cheap for such an expensive brand. Got this jacket to compare with the Patagonia down sweater hoody, and although I prefer the color of this one, the Patagonia is the one I’m keeping because it has a stronger zipper, better fit, and better pocket placement.

From the moment I tried the coat on I was transformed into a new world of style, class and sophistication. Venturing out into what has become the Sydney Arctic wasteland of today I had no fear of developing hypothermia or frostbite on my extremities as the warmth generated by this coat was equivalent to that of being snuggled up on the lounge under a doona in front of a fireplace drinking hot chocolate.

I am a married man and totally dedicated to my wife. However the plethora of beautiful women and stunning gay men that threw themselves at me when wearing this coat makes me question my faithfulness to my wife and even my own sexual orientation.

Gentlemen do yourself a favour and buy this coat.

Pretty great overcoat. Well made and warm and sits nicely. My only complaint is that it has the common fault of most items of clothing that gets up-sized – the designers/manufacturers scaled up things excessively that didn’t need it.

In this case the arm length is too long, and I’m a 6ft tall gent so I imagine it’s worse on plenty of others. Having arms on coats taken in is expensive, but it’ll be worth it on this one.

The second I walked into Johnny Bigg, I saw this coat and knew I wasn’t going home without it… not only did it bring me comfort but I instantly lost the way I saw myself… It’s true when they say “look good, FEEL GOOD”.

I wasn’t much of a shopper for clothes kinda guy but the way I see myself now, I would’ve been dressing like this years ago. The best part is that now in Australia, the days and nights are gettin colder so don’t be surprised if you see me wearing this everywhere… pls get these in more colours tho.
