I’m not one to sugarcoat reviews, I tell it as it is, the good and the bad. Overall, this product is okay. It is a pretty basic facial cleanser in my opinion, nothing special. For more mature skin it definitely strips away any natural moisture and leaves the face feeling very dry and tight.
It doesn’t help with acne breakouts either in my experience. This product might be good for teens or pre-teens who are starting to experience acne and need an introduction to facial hygiene and skin care.

Smells great, easy to use but DO NOT PURCHASE along with the grapefruit face scrub and even the grapefruit moisturizer. I’ve been using the oil free acne wash from neutropenia (the orange one) for over a decade, and it’s the only thing that worked at preventing and drying up my acne. When the acne proofing gel came out I was intrigued because it also contains 2% salicylic acid, and I really wanted to know what the difference was between both products.
I found it on sale at target and bought it. I used it for about a month and a half before I finally stopped. Since being on this product, I experienced the worst acne of my life. I’m 25 now and never had serious acne issues.
I’d get an occasional zit and blackheads but never anything that lead to cystic acne and scarring. I woke up almost every day with a new cystic pimple. They were deep, painful, and resistant to healing.
I bought different face serums and moisturizers thinking that maybe those were the culprits then I finally figured out that my acne problem started when I started using this face wash. Nothing else changed in my regimen.
As soon as I stopped it and restarted the oil free acne wash, my acne has been clearing up and I haven’t been experiencing those persistent and painful cystic pimples that I had while using the acne proofing gel.
I didn’t think this product would break me out like that because it contains 2% salicylic acid. I guess there’s something else in the formulation that wasn’t working for me. I thought I’d share my experience for anyone interested.
I wanted to post a review because when I researched this before purchasing I noticed most reviewers had been provided the product in exchange for a review which could skew their opinion. As stated, I purchased this with my own money.
That said, here are the “pros”: 1. This product has a fairly high percentage of salicylic acid compared to some other products (2%). 2. I had a pimple developing when I purchased the product and using it may have helped heal it (within 2 days) and prevent new ones from forming, but I must disclose that I have been using Neutrogena Naturals Acne Spot Treatment daily for the last year and so I was using the wash along with it (I bought this wash to give my the spot treatment an extra “boost” of salicylic acid).
3. It has not been irritating. In fact, when I am done washing my face I was shocked to notice that my skin is not red at all but instead more calm that before I washed it. 4. I didn’t feel that it stripped my skin or made it feel tight.
(I do recommend using a moistuizer afterward though as with any products that contain salicylic acid). There is a con, and a large one at that: 1. The smell. This scent is strong and smells is like men’s aftershave or body wash.
Not only does the fragrance smell strongly when you use it but I can actually smell this masculine scent on my face during the day after rinsing it off thoroughly. The bigger issue than the scent here is that I am sure Neutrogena is well aware that adding fragrance such as this only increases the potential for the product to be irritating to the skin, so why do it??? There is zero reason to add fragrance.
So if I will have to see if the benefits of this product outweigh having to go around smelling a strong masculine scent on my face throughout the day. Neutrogena, please reformulate this product and merely remove the unnecessary scent and it will be fantastic!.

I started reading about the benefits of sulfur for acne prone skin and wish I’d had known about it so much sooner! I’ve been using this cleanser for over a month now and still get the occasional pimple around that time of the month but it’s a night and day difference from before.
I can actually leave the house without foundation and feel comfortable in my skin. If you’ve tried salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide cleansers and they haven’t worked for you pleeeaaase give this a shot.
The only downside is that it has a very mild scent (to be expected with any product containing sulfur), but it’s not at all overbearing and dissipates once you wash it off. But if you’re super sensitive to scents, maybe get it when it’s on sale or buy a mini first.

After narrowing my acne down to a fungal acne caused by varying hormone levels, I searched high and low for sulfur containing products to accompany a topical anti fungal prescribed from my physician.
This face wash is one of the few suggested for fungal acne, and the only one you need. My skin has not looked this good in over a year and a half (even with just the topical anti fungal ). You can definitely smell the sulfur, but my skin has never felt dried out or over exfoliated.
Highly recommend a try if all other paths have been unsuccessful.
