20 Best Eyeliner For Smokey Eyes (2023 Updated)

This was for me a big step, could I use it & can I pull it off? Surprisingly after my second attempt I realised this is simple & quick to use. Although, take your time first go round. Gently use this pen exactly as you would your eye liner on your top eye lid, then tilt the ball of the pen backwards onto the eye lid & gently run it along the entire eye, from left to right.

Now just get your blending brush or whatever small size brush you have, even your finger will work & gently blend upwards working all along the eye where you have applied the pen – your trying to create an affect of darker on the bottom of your eye lid & gradually getting lighter as you blend out.

You can go back & layer more colour as you like & keep building it up or leave as is & apply enough to get the affect your comfortable with. Obviously the darker you go the more dramatic the result. So there you have it! You can add other colours from your powder pallet if you wish.

As this pen is powder based you have the versatility to really mix things around which, usually other gel based pens make it difficult to add colours from your powder palette & achieve the flawless look this pen allows you to achieve.

After all your hard work don’t forget to use a setting spray to keep your eyes looking fab the entire day & or night. Right on price great on ease & quality. Enjoy.

This pen has a sponge-tipped applicator and powder contained within the cap. L’oreal describes the powder as gel-like and they claim up to 14 hours of wear. This is supposed to be a smoky-eye-in-a-pen, no smudging or other brushes needed.

The pen itself is chubbier than I thought it would be. it’s somewhere in between a regular eyeliner and a mascara tube. It has a matte black finish with gold lettering and looks high-end and modern. Overall, this is an amazing product for helping to create a smoky eye- it makes it so easy! I still wanted to blend with a brush a bit afterward because the sponge applicator kind of skipped and dragged on my eyelids.

So the claim that this is all you need is somewhat of a stretch for me, but in a pinch, it would definitely get the job done by itself. Also, I like that the applicator doesn’t pick up too much powder at one time so there’s no fear of over-applying.

I was really impressed that the powder didn’t get all over the place or end up a smeary mess. it has major staying power!.

I bought this because I once owned a powder stylo applicator like this it was my favorite fast natural looking way to line eyes. Using powder as liner gives a softer look I like much more than a sharp hard edge liners! You have to practice a delicate touch to just apply with the center tip to draw a thin line.

There were tricks I read about they work well! Like brushing the powder tip on an eyeliner brush to create a nice thin line under eye. Once you get good at the techniques-you wont want to use anything else! This powder stays put all day! I got it on sale.

I hope they don’t discontinue it! I’m hooked on it now! The taupe brown is beautiful shade. 13 minutes ago.

I gave this eyeliner 4 stars because it’s a great color, stays all day without smudging, is a great price, and is considered “clean”. The only reason I couldn’t give it 5 stars is because it doesn’t apply as creamy or smooth as a higher end eyeliner.

Even though it’s a “gel” it feels like a pencil eyeliner being applied and I wish it was a smoother application. I have had no issues of breaking or it being gone in a few weeks like some of the other reviewers did.

One of my favorite things about this eyeliner is that it is very easy to apply! I love that it has a thin tip, which makes it easy to make as big, as little, as thick, or as thin of a line or wing as I would like! I also like the fact that when first applied, the eyeliner is very black and pigmented.

However, I run into some issues when smudging it out. I am very much into a smokey eyeliner and cat-eye look, and I find that I am able to achieve that look which this product, but not with the sponge applicator provided.

I find that the sponge does not smudge out the product as nicely in comparison to using a brush, as it comes out quite patchy. I also found that after I smudged it out with the sponge, the eyeliner seemed to have crumbled a little bit, as I had little black flakes on my face.

It may have to do with the sponge, or I may have applied too much product, but it was a little messy to clean up. I also find that the longevity of this eyeliner wasn’t the best, as it came off when I was curling my eyelashes.

I was lucky enough to be apart of Maybelline Day this year. I choose the Tattoo Studio Smokey Gel Pencil Eyeliner. I’m so glad I did because it’s everything it says it is. I live in Louisiana and our humidity is a make-up killer especially eyeliner.

I hate walking around looking like I went for a double eyeliner look. it absolutely drives me insane! This eyeliner goes on so smoothly with little effort it flows perfectly. I got black and it’s a deep dark black.

I hate getting black and it ends up looking dark grey. If you’re going for a smokey look you need this one in your life. it smokes so easily. It’s so hard to find a eyeliner that’s truly waterproof. This liner is absolutely positively waterproof! You don’t have to worry about smudging unless you want it to smudge.

I can tell you one thing this eyeliner is bringing you 💯 facts! It does everything it says it is going to do. I also sleep in it to see if it stays on for 36 hrs. I don’t know about 36hrs but I can say it’s all good for 26 hrs.

If you’re looking for a eyeliner that’s waterproof, no smudging and can last up to 36hrs this eyeliner is for you! I won’t be buying a different eyeliner anymore. This is now my favorite eyeliner I highly suggest giving it a try.

As I got older, probably from 35 and up, it was harder and harder, now near impossible, to find an eyeliner that worked on my waterline. i remember, as a teenager actually lighting the tip of my eyeliner with a lighter to soften it so it would be darker.

what can I say I grew up in the 80’s. Anyway, as we get older, for some reason I’d like to know the answer to, we cant get liner to stick on that damn waterline. So I picked up Cover Girl Tattoo Studios gel eyeliner in Smokey Brown, took it to my car.

couldn’t wait to try it, 🤫 and guess what???? It WORKED!!! yay! It went on smoothly, perfectly even coverage and no more Nekkid waterline!! I LOVE Cover Girl Tattoo Studios gel Liner! But dont swear by me, I know all skin is different and it may not help some like it did me.

Good colour, easy to apply. Colour stays in well through the day with minimal smudging. Only criticism is the colour dries really quickly on application making blending for a more smoky eye look impossible.

Oh how I adore the eye pencil. Definitely deserves 5 stars! My first time using and I fell in love. Glides on so smoothly and is super long lasting! I haven’t used the other end yet, but I would love to buy other colors.

My previous review has been removed – do you only keep the positive ones?! I absolutely loved the precision eye pencil that twists rather than sharpens but for some reason is only available in Blackberry.

I bought this one instead, lovely pencil and quality that sits perfectly on the eye but the EA assistance in Boots in Brighton had no idea about sharpening it, didn’t sell sharpeners, doesn’t come with one!! A £17 pencil and no sharpener.

Luckily the kind man on the Chanel counter gave me one. Very disappointing that the EA assistant was unhelpful and they don’t appear to sell quality sharpeners that protect the pencil!.

This product actually hurts to use on the upper eyelid. It has so much wax in it !!! You have to use to much pressure, trying over and over again to get results. It drags and tugs on the skin instead of gliding.

Its obvious Elizabeth Arden does not read these reviews, more cons than pros on this particular product, otherwise they would correct the problem. I much prefer the old eyeliner pencil that required a sharpener.

Glides on, and soooo much easier to blend. I will continue to check out eBay, for the older pencil.

I normally wear black or dark brown eyeliner. The cosmetician at Shoppers Drug Mart recommended ‘Midnight’ for my green eyes. I always thought navy blue wouldn’t look good with my eye coloring. However I was wrong.

The blue seems to make my eyes look brighter and whiter. Especially good when I have allergies, look tired etc. I figured the color would scream blue. However it’s quite deep and only upon looking closely can you see the blue tinge.

At least in my opinion. I pair this with colors such as MAC Jest. Cool or neutral tones. I starting wearing this when the weather turned colder, so I can’t say how it would hold up in high heat. The pencil glides on easily and I like their is a rubber smudge brush on the opposite end.

I did have minimal transfer on my upper lid but nothing horrible compared to other brands I’ve tried. Overall I’m happy with this liner and would repurchase. It costs around $22-23. 00 Canadian before taxes.

Lancome has informed me this item is being DISCONTINUED and I am heartsick about it. I have used and worn Lancome’s Le Crayon Khol eye pencil every day for over 30 years. I can say unequivocally it is the best pencil out there.

The consistency is perfect. It is not too soft or too hard. It glides beautifully around delicate eye skin, and smudges excellently. It sharpens well and lasts a very long time. My favorite color is Black Coffee, as it’s a perfect very deep brown with no hint of red.

It’s as good as black, but not as harsh. I also have Black Ebony and it is jet black. I’m in my late 50s now and don’t wear the jet black as often. The only caveat in my love for this pencil is that all colors don’t seem to be as perfect as Black Coffee or Black Ebony.

I also have this is Purple Dusk and its consistency is awful. No color payoff and it drags on my skin. I don’t recommend that one. If this is truly being discontinued, get it while you can. I’m sure they’ll probably replace it with some terrible twist-up garbage pencil that seems to be all the rage now.

Please Lancôme, never discontinue this timeless product: The Black Kohl pencil eye liner (and the other shades). I’ve been using since my teens! Of course as technology advances, add new options, but keep the classics in the repertoire! I have always absolutely love your “Black Coffee” kohl pencil, it glides so easily though its not too soft that it breaks. I have used this produce for over 40 years, please never removed these classic pencils or change their quality.

Lancome has always been the best in quality makeup. I am ordering a new Black Coffee, and as to from the reviews I am going to try the Black Lapis (Navy Blue). I appreciate so much that Lancome has not changed nor discontinued this product line.

Just once I tried this pencil because the store did not have the Powerpoint Stubborn Brown I’ve used for years. This was such a disappointment that it’s still in a drawer fairly new. This pencil does not stay on, it smears and is hardly visible only after a short time; a waste of money.

Another disappointment moment was today when I went to buy the best MAC eyeliner I ever used, Powerpoint in colors Engraved and Stubborn Brown, only to find it has been discontinued. Now, why would a company discontinue a great product I really don’t know but I’ll have to rethink my choices.

I don’t know if the “new” eyeliner they tried to sell me at the store is any good. However, I always prefer a pencil that can be sharpened instead of one you twist. The reason is quite simple; you never know how much product you’re buying or how much product you have left.

This presents a challenge, specially while traveling, as you run the risk to run out while on the road. Another reason is that many times they break during application if you happen to put a little bit of pressure.

I absolutely love the jane iredale Mysikol Powdered Eyeliner! I started using this product many yrs ago, before it was changed to the way the eyeliner and brush are set up now, and I’ve always loved the product!!! The liner goes on so very easily and smoothly! The brush is so very easy to use and get a perfect line under and over the eye.

It’s so easy to have the line go on very thin or thicker if you prefer. I always plan on using this product. And I love the colors available. All are very flattering to one’s eye colors and skin tone!!!! Thank you so much jane iredale for such a great product!.

An absolute disappointment. I had very high hopes I have been using powder khôl for my nearly my whole life, Guerlain stopped their production, I am left an orphan and thought this could replace it. You cannot apply this product round your eyes unless the skin is absolutely dry which never happens round your eyes right? So you are left with irregular traces of irregular sizes.

I don’t even understand how this product came out of testing and has been marketed. Could make an eye shadow eventually but this is certainly no eye liner. No no no no no.

This is an ingenious product! It applies so much better than the pencils I’ve been using. No messy sharpening of the pencils, no messy edges of the line. I did have trouble finding the applicator! At first, I thought you had made a mistake and forgotten to include it in the package.

Imagine my annoyance! I reread the materials and couldn’t find any help. Finally, I figured it out. Ah! I love the product! I bought it for eyebrows to replace the previous powder I got from you, I don’t think it will work to go on lightly.

Any suggestions of what might work instead?.

I’ve been a loyal L’Oreal customer for many years, and the abysmal quality of this product was a total shock! I only got to use it a few times, because it was impossible to sharpen when the time came.

It kept breaking off until there was nothing left! Very disappointed and frustrated with this. Don’t waste your money on this product!.

I bought this pencil thinking that L’Oreal is a make we’ve all heard of, so it must be good. It was soo hard I couldn’t use it on my water line, which is what I bought it for. It was like sticking a stick in my eye.

Very disppointed. L’Oreal should stick to making shampoo. I’m really worth better than this.

Given I was very stuck on my Jemma Kidd liner and smudger pencil, which I had been using for years, and only bought this as you can no longer get Jemma Kidd products. I am very surprised as to how good a product it is.

The pencil glides on effortlessly and the smudger works perfectly, giving you a great Cleopatra, smoky eyed look. The only slight downside to this product is the pencil is very black. So if you want an even smokier look, you may want to go for a dark grey, although I am unsure as to whether or not they do that colour?! However, a great product at a great price.

Very pleased and definitely worth purchasing.

If you haven’t tried this brand, you need to, like now! It is not too expensive, it lasts for quite sometime. A little goes a long way. The smudge at the end is awesome have. You can get at any grocery/drug store on a trip to buy groceries or getting your prescription so need to go out of your way to sephora or ulta.

Let me preface this review with the fact that I’m slightly biased in the type of eyeliner I like to personally use – I’ve stuck to liquid eyeliner for the past 7 years. So I wasn’t quite sure how I was gonna feel about this product when it arrived on my doorstep.

I have to admit though, when I first tested this eyeliner, I was impressed. The color was true black that brought attention to my eyes and it glided on smoothly. The smudged tool on the other end was also nice and allowed me to play with my look each time I used this makeup.

What let me down was the quality of the eyeliner and packaging. The more I used this eyeliner, the less smooth the application became and then I was using the smudged to make the liner look more consistent on my lid.

Additionally, the liner stick broke after 3 uses and now I can’t push the liner up until I absolutely need to because it won’t go down. I wish the first impression could’ve stuck – I was initially really excited about this eyeliner option.

I love, love, love, this product. It works really well for tight-lining and glides like a dream on the lid. It will stay put if left to dry for about a minute, and lasts for hours. The lead is soft and there is absolutely no tug to the delicate skin of the eyes when applied.

I use it alone or as the first later and may add The Ella is deep muted chocolate brown; Hoda, a deep dark grey with a hint of blue that accentuates my blue eyes. These matte colors give the eyes a very smoky sultry look.

The Lizzie is a moss green, is lighter and perfect when I want a more natural “no make-up look” before going to the gym or something like that. The pencils have an angled applicator at the opposite end to smudge the line right after application if desired, but these have only frustrated me as they keep popping off so I gave up on it.

I use these alone or as a base with additional liner that has shimmer to mix it up. Highly recommended.

I bought this gel liner the first time I had my lashes done and needed an oil-free liner, and I haven’t worn anything else since. For well over 5 years+ of daily wear, I’ve had many other more expensive liners but none have come close to this.

It’s a little pot and though i try to replace mine at least once a year, I have never been close to running out. The brush is perfect so it only takes a couple of mins to use. I suffer from dry eyes which means my eyes waters soon as i step out of the house, but they never smudge.

I’ve had so many compliments over the years about how flawless it looks on and many of my friends and even colleagues have gone to buy it for themselves. Fantastic also if you like individual lashes like me and need a gel-free liner.

I can’t tell you how brilliant this gel eyeliner is! So easy to use and has a wonderful depth to the colour. It’s a soft kohl like blend and applies beautifully. I have used liquid eyeliner for over 30 years and I will never go back to it! Gel all the way.

It’s also easy to remove but has staying power through the day. My only advice would be to use a different eyeliner brush (I use real techniques) as the longer brush helps to control the gel better and.

I apply the gel to the back of my hand as a palette to work from. Definitely a game changer. Brilliant!.

Ever since Clinique discontinued their gel eyeliner a Boots assistant advised I tried this and to be honest it pretty much is the same but cheaper. It is long lasting, good thick colour, the brush that comes with it is slightly angled to help application, a little does go a long way so you’ll find only needing to purchase this every few months.

If your using gel for the first time don’t be disheartened if it doesn’t look good straightaway, it does take a little practice but alot better than pencil eyeliner. The only con would be that it takes a little longer than I’d like to dry.

This has always been my favorite eyeliner-eyebrow pencil for over a decade! It is a soft pencil (as oppose to a hard pencil that one would have to burn with a lighter to make it soft!) It’s hard to find eyeliner pencils in general, especially the soft ones! But luckily, this Covergirl eyeliner with a blend-tip has always been one of their best selling make-up products! I just hope they never discontinue their “Brownish Black” color pencil!.

Bought this specifically because the shade seemed similar to the black honey eyeliner by clinique which i’ve always liked for my brown eyes. This is a similar idea, different execution. On me this leans warmer, more berry and less plummy purple where the BH eyeliner to me is a bit more purple than it is berry.

Still figuring out how to use this best as I’ve only had it a day so far but it does complement the other Pillow Talk shades tonally and is worth getting if you like and own the other pillow talk offerings to kind of pull it all together.

This morning I used this liner and used black honey the eyeshadow single to kind of smoke out my eye and i think this color really compliments that one well that’s different than the pillow talk eye quad.

Black honey is darker than the darkest color in that quad so it let me create a little more depth in my outer corner. Also, these pencils are meant to be sharpened. You get a lot of product! If you don’t already own one, buy a sharpener just for your makeup pencils.

It’s worth having and the investment is usually just a few dollars.

I love these pencils. I have various colours and they are well pigmented for a pencil. The pencil is easy to blend, if you’re quick or always apply face oils before make up, like me! More importantly for me, they never irritate my eyes, even when applied to the waterline which I cannot say for any other eye-liner I’ve tried.

It lasts most of the day but I’d prefer it if it lasted longer and as the pencil is so soft I’m always sharpening it and feel like I lose a lot of product doing this. It’s fairly water resistant so takes some effort to get it off at end of day.

I have oily eyelids and although I love wearing pencil liners, they just wear off so quickly on me. But not this! Like all the other EOH pencils, this is long-lasting and stays the day. My only complaint is that this is not what I would call a sapphire colour but dark blue, almost navy with a bit of glimmer.

I find almost all the EOH pencils the same: blackened colours when I would prefer them a little lighter – too dark and they all look the same – but the longevity trumps shade choice for me.

I have been using this product for years. Way before online shopping when it was available at a chemist in Mornington, VIC. Anyhow it has always been the ONE and only pencil that does NOT smear. I’ve tried all the colors and have preferred the bronze.

Do you think you could add a different bronze to the range. one more similar to the Victoria Beckham range. I love that color but the reviews are terrible for the pencil itself. Hence why I always stick with Eyes of Horus.
