20 Best Espresso Grinder Under 100 (2023 Updated)

We usually only want one good coffee a day, strongish but milky (double shot latte) and usually go to a local cafe for it. The cost adds up over time. So very recently we bought a small de Longhi home espresso machine with good reviews – middling price range, but supposedly very good value.

Then we spent some time researching a reasonably good middle price range small grinder, once again basing choice on user reviews. But this particular grinder only seems to provide a fairly coarse outcome, even on finest grind setting, and even putting the grounds through repeatedly – for a minor improvement.

Probably okay for a percolator, but not for espresso, or even plunger. Extremely disappointed, and we have now reverted to buying pre-ground espresso (we mostly use Lavazza as it’s easy to obtain) for use in the coffee maker.

Will source some different beans to try but can’t see it making much difference to the grind quality.

I love my new grinder! I managed to muck it up in the first two weeks and it stopped working and I freaked out, but I did a google search online and found some amazing helpful videos done by the company which explained how to unblock my grinder and also explained what I had done wrong to cause the problem in the first place (wasn’t paying attention to the fill line and stuffed too much in the ground bin).

Cleared the blockage by following the video’s great advice and am running again. Works great for my preferences – french press coffee, pour overs and the occasional espresso. I have been using a hand burr grinder for the last few years and it will now be a permanent fixture in my campervan while the new Baratza Encore does its job in my kitchen.

I have avoided an electric burr grinder because I have a small kitchen and don’t like to use up counter space and most of the really decent grinders are too big for my space. This one is the right size with the right features and excellent quality.

Also, dealing with Eight Ounce Coffee is always a pleasure. Thank you for keeping me caffeinated with quality coffee.

I had an earlier version of the Baratza Encore and it was magic for ten years! I used it daily, with no maintenance and it was a workhorse. Tragically, it stopped working. I immediately bought this newer version, and it jammed immediately.

I cleared it, and it jammed again. To be honest, I returned it for a replacement. It jammed. I returned it. Third time is the charm! yes, I also jammed this one, but learned the quirks! First of all, pay attention to the warning not to grind above the white line! This is essential! Secondly, I tap and tilt after each grind to clear any grounds from the small and horizontal chute so they cannot compact in there to create a plug.

Following these two strategies, I have been successfully grinding for a few months now with no issues! So yes, the newer version is a little more finicky, yet also does a much better job and the coffee is far more delicious, so worth the effort.

This coffee grinder is efficient and attractive, a good match for the DeLonghi cappuccino coffee maker. The instructions should be clearer about securing the top on the ground coffee container to activate the grinding.

I could not get the machine to grind directly into the portafilter. The portafilter light was flashing to indicate there was no connection. Instructions were not adequate.

Even on the finest grind setting it’s still too coarse in my opinion. It’s a shame because I like it otherwise. I have an inexpensive Capresso EC Pro that comes with a pressurized double shot portafilter and an unpressurized single shot.

I’ve only been able to get it to work if I do a double grind-double tamp. The only way I can get it to work with the pressurized basket is to grind about 2/3 full (around 7g), tamp firmly, grind again to fill it the rest of the way and tamp firmly again.

If I just grind directly into the portafilter filling it all the way and then tamp, it runs out way too fast. I tried the unpressurized portafilter, and it was a complete failure. Feature wise it’s attractive, seems easy to clean, and has the portafilter adapter/holder (although, I have to hold the portafilter in place or it falls out of the track) which is why I chose it over the Capresso Infinity.

The display is unnecessary for espresso grinding, but I do like the ability to program the grind cycle. I programmed it to grind out 7g with each press of the button. It grinds consistently for drip, but not for French press.

It probably works better with the matching DeLonghi Dedica machine. I’ll probably sell it and get a Breville as I don’t want to spend over $200 on a grinder, but I want the ability to achieve a finer grind.

Live and learn.

I bought this grinder after our second Cuisinart burr grinder died; I (mostly) like it a lot. Good: – Fairly consistent grind quality and amount; set it and forget it. – Tough. There was a pebble (yup, an actual rock) in a recent bag of beans; naturally, it stopped the grinder completely dead.

I opened up the machine and lifted out the burr to clear the rock, and it’s been working ever since like nothing happened. Not great: – Noisy. It’s not jet-engine loud, but it IS “wake the house” loud.

Grrr: – Messy. There’s a small gap between the top of the collection box and the bottom of the output, so there’s a bit of spillage every time you grind. This gets on the counter and makes a mess, and also piles up inside the grinder so eventually the collection box won’t slide in.

Not a huge deal, but a little irritating. – Static – there’s always a static charge on the collection box, so coffee grounds stick to it and it’s hard to dump them all into your coffeemaker. This is common to all grinders with plastic collection boxes, though; I’ve never had a glass one to compare.

Daughter’s boyfriend bought his burr grinder. A few weeks later, i bought my own. Static issue persists though I do the recommended ‘tapping’ on the receptacle as noted in instructions. Receptacle not conducive for easy pour out as others have noted.

It is messy but I continued to use it as volume at one time, quality, and automation seemed working well as designed. Had about 2 months (not daily use) and went for deeper cleaning. Easily pulled out the ring.

Hand washed and let dry overnight. I placed the ring back in and set the hopper on top but the hopper will not turn from the ‘off’ position. Tried re-sitting everything. Called 1-866-832-4843 and chose ‘Brim’ option.

Unintelligible support (muffled and such). Thought I was trying to buy the product. After clarification on cleaning effort, the support said they had no access to the product support. I had more Brim website info than the support person did! Stuck.

Was interested in getting other line of Brim coffee hardware but not sure if this is the support available. No Brim videos. Other brands have maintenance detailed vids. This may be an 30 second easy maintenance item or user error on what seems a well constructed item but lack of support has me baffled.

This design is riddled with issues. The coffee gets everywhere, the small coffee tray lid hinge broke in less than a month. The top of the lid depresses a button that lets the motor function so the lid is required.

There’s all a small undercut square hole in the top of the lid the coffee is supposed to fall through – it doesn’t form a clean seal and the grounds get everywhere; every time you pull it out, then flip the lid all the way open to the get the grounds out.

I’m outside of the return window and there weren’t many options I was seeing <100$ with an electric burr grinder. We're just going to name this thing "Brimly" and try to come up with a way to keep that button held down so I can find a new tray.

Also – there’s issues with feeding beans, like it’ll be filled to the line and during grinding just give up like it doesn’t care anymore and make a dry whining noise until you smack ole Brimly like he’s in a diabetic coma.

This is my first coffee grinder and as soon as I unpacked it I was impressed. The quality is top shelf. Since I have never had a coffee with fresh ground beans I had to try it. Set it up and started grinding.

Made my first cup with the coffee press I bought with it. I’m hooked. No shortage of settings for the type of grind you want and grinds quickly. The carabiner is a nice touch. The one and only thing that I can find fault with is the wing nut that sets the grind stands proud of the grinder and prevents it from standing on its own while dumping the coffee into my press.

I live on a boat so the compactness of the grinder is nice. I use it up to three times a day so hopefully it will last. If you are looking for a quality coffee grinder this is it.

I’m not coffee aficionado, but I love to drink it. This lets me drink that coffee at home, on the go: pretty much everywhere I can find hot water. Plus it looks and feels super great. I’ve used it quite a few times now and absolutely love it every single time.

I’d recommend anyone in a similar boat to buy it in a heartbeat. You like coffee brewed from beans? Might be time to get this product. I really think this. I have no clue who will read this, but I’m sure if you read it you probably have lots of questions about this product.

Does it feel like a work out? Does it grind the size we need? How’s the sound, is it too loud? What about the quality of the grind? Quality of the grinder itself? Is it easy to clean? Too heavy? The list goes on.

I don’t know. I think it’s close to perfect. Just buy it and try. Don’t know where I’m going with this review. Thanks for making this. It’s great.

I’ve longed for this grinder for months and showed ads for it to my wife more times than I can count. But I just couldn’t bring myself to spend that much money on it! Well I guess my wife got tired of hearing me carry on about it and finally broke down and bought it for me as a gift! And wow am I impressed! As soon as you unbox it and begin handling it you immediately realize the quality of construction! It is indeed constructed like a precision instrument! This proves the old adage that you get what you pay for! And after using it you will know it functions every bit as well as it looks and feels!.

And I couldn’t be happier!.

Would be 5 stars but I’m on my second warranty return in 11 months. First time it just lost its mind. Second time the scale stopped working. Could still be 4 stars because they seem to honor their 2 year warranty well.

But they lose a star because of the warranty game they play. If it didn’t happen twice I wouldn’t be calling it a game and wouldn’t have a problem. The game: you call customer support and talk to a very nice person who will ask some questions and maybe ask you to do some debugging.

The will ask you to send an email with your receipt, serial number and address. After a couple of days when you don’t hear anything you may send an email out 2 that they won’t respond to. Finally you’ll call and they explain the person you sent it to is probably busy helping other customers but they will take care of it right now for you.

So it seems the game is to see if you call back, it you don’t you’ll never see your replacement. Good for the company but a waste of time and aggravating for the customer. It sounds like they even have a script for the call back since it was almost word for word.

The lesson is after you send the information call within the next day or 2, don’t wait a week expecting they are working on it. The unit itself is fantastic (while working). The weight it measures to is pretty consistent.

Don’t expect scientific scale accuracy, it’s just coffee. You have a reasonable amount of adjustments you can make to the measure. The grind is fairly consistent with an incredibly wide range of choices.

One issue, there’s a fairly large gap between the ground coffee outlet and the cup. When humidity is low the coffee will build up some static and not all make it to the cup. You have to wipe up around the grinder after each use.

It’s not allot, mostly some rust, but it’s enough, and somewhat more than I’ve had with other grinders. Overall I’m happy with the purchase. I would recommend it with the caveat that you will likely need to invoke the warranty, which costs nothing since they pay shipping both ways.

With a 2 year warranty and an approximate working life of 5 months I think I’ll have a brand new grinder 4 times for the price of one.

I bought this OXO because there were no better grinder in the local store. It was a waste of money. The OXO simply IS NOT capable of producing fine, espresso quality coffee. The water runs through it like in a sieve.

I am using Barrington’s Gold. The same coffee, that I have been buying for years, is perfect when ground in any Baratza. Two stars because the OXO us ok for filter coffee. Nothing else.

I research many items I purchase very thoroughly. I don’t know if I ever shopped longer for anything before than I did for a coffee grinder! I believe I looked for 2 years. There is such a price variety.

I was on a mission for the best cup of coffee I could make, which included studying all about coffee and researching all the various ways of brewing it. Finally I found a review of various grinders that sounded very authentic, and it helped me decide on the OXO, even though I had been considering grinders three times the price.

I’d decided on my favorite brewing method and my favorite coffee seed and roast. I experimented with grind size and weight with the OXO and I now have a perfectly delicious balanced cup of coffee every single day without fail – no bitterness and no sourness.

Some of the problems I’d read about concerning grinders included static creating a mess, noise and grinders that needed constant cleaning. I have none of those problems with the OXO and I’ve used it daily for 8 months now.

All I do maintenance-wise is to use the heavy duty plastic jar to tap hard on the side of the grinder where the coffee comes out about once every 2-3 weeks. About a teaspoon of old grinds will fall out.

This tool is heavy duty and easy to use. My only complaint is that I have to select the weight desired every morning as it does not retain this information between brewings. This means I have to turn a knob moving a digital display from 0 to 26.

Having had some disappointments with various brewing methods that were greatly bragged about, I was not too sure that grind was that important. IT IS. Before this, I had used a blade grinder all my life, pulsing it to try and get an even grind.

I was usually successful about 1 time out of 15. The OXO gets my vote for my best purchase of 2018. and I buy a lot of stuff!.

I originally picked this grinder because it was the least expensive out of multiple high-end manual grinders, but also how versatile it was. No burr-switching for espresso grinds vs pour-over. I’ve had it for about 1 year now and still love how versatile it is.

I love that you can super-fine tune the grind. I also love how durable the grinder is – I even accidentally dropped it on the hard floor and it just got a little dent in the stainless steel grind holder.

Also, contrary to other reviews, my grinder has never locked-up and it has never lost position when using it. Just lightly nudge it into place at whatever setting you want and it will stay. There are however two issues that almost make me regret my purchase that aren’t super clear in other reviews.

First, the lid just rests in place when grinding and will just come off when grinding – even when trying to be gentle during grinding. This is annoying, but I just end of leaving the cap off when grinding then putting it back on to store it.

The second, and worse issue, is that the folding handle consistently folds when grinding. I typically grind 16 grams at +7 for my aeropress and it takes about 60 seconds to grind. Without fail, the folding handle will collapse mid-grind 2-4 times.

Super annoying, especially considering the price of the grinder. I put an o-ring where the puny spring is and it helped for a few weeks but got works. I wish they would have picked a stronger spring or developed a fix for this issue.

Would I buy it again? I don’t know – probably? If the spring issue is fixed then dfinitely yes.

I like the quality of the grind I get from this grinder. The grind seems uniform with minimal clumping. I did find that the grind setting came loose easily when I first started using the grinder. Even thought the manufacturers instructions caution against tightening the locking ring too firmly, I found that I needed to cinch it down pretty firmly to prevent it from coming loose and allowing the grind setting to change while grinding.

This is really my only complaint. Overall I find it to be a competent grinder that will be a good addition to my pour over setup in the RV.

I like to grind my coffee beans for freshness, and thought I might take the next step in trying to perfect my coffee making experience by investing in the Oxo Conical Burr Coffee Grinder. At first use it ground my coffee beans evenly and consistently, and I was impressed with its performance.

However, be aware that the grinder produces static electricity that is passed to the coffee grounds and causes them to jump out of the grounds container or stick stubbornly to the container, sides of the grounds chute, and grind chamber.

My first experience was quite shocking as coffee grounds immediately scattered all over my countertop when I removed the grounds container. The stainless steel container did not really prevent this as OXO described in it’s manual.

Also, I’ve read many articles about “old beans and bean dust” fowling the taste of coffee, and how cleaning the grinder of old coffee is very important. The steps for cleaning as outlined by Oxo were simple, but the actuality of getting all the coffee grounds out of the grinder was difficult.

The upper portion of the burr grinder cleaned quickly, but a small brush is necessary and is not included with the grinder. My problem is with the grind chamber and grounds chute where the ground coffee exits.

They seem to trap coffee and are very difficult to clean. After cleaning the top of the grinder I tipped it over and cleaned the chute and chamber as best I could with a small brush. I found it difficult to clean the chamber adequately, and after tipping the grinder right side up more coffee grounds would spill out.

I would also find more grounds in the burrs themselves. I had to tip the grinder over several times, tap the grinder to loosen grounds, and clean both the burrs, and the grounds chamber and chute several times to get it “adequately” cleaned.

This process was difficult and time consuming, and I was surprised at the amount of coffee that was wasted in the cleaning process. It seems that some of the cleaning difficulty could be eliminated by making the plastic grind chamber cover removable so that cleaning the chamber would be easier.

I’m surprised OXO hasn’t incorporated this in the design. So mixed reviews from me. I like the grind consistency, but hate the cleaning. Because of the cleaning difficulty I’ve decided not to grind daily and instead grind enough coffee for several days use at a time to limit the cleaning process to maybe every five or so days defeating the concept of fresh ground coffee.

I’ve been living with this grinder for about two years after being sick of dealing with the messes my kitchenaid made. It’s really a great grinder. It’s been completely reliable, and I like being able to set a timer and have the grinder do it’s thing while I get the rest of the coffee maker ready.

There are some things you should know though: if you only like dark, oily roasts, the grinder will start to clog on you if you don’t clean it regularly. I’ve never had a clogging problem, but I switch up my roasts constantly.

The oily roasts also will produce more mess because the oil electrical insulates the ground coffee from the container, so the static cannot find a path to ground through the grounding tab that touches the metal container.

There’s very little mess with less oily roasts due to the grounded container. My only gripe is that the hopper doesn’t quite hold a full bag of beans.

This review will be short. I gave it to my wife, a big coffee lover, as a birthday present. After mastering the various settings, which took a while, she began to enjoy coffee (I liked the aroma). But she also began to complain about it spewing coffee grounds all over the kitchen counter (which I can verify).

And by the end of two weeks, she was complaining even more about how difficult/impossible it is to clean; the freshness of the grinding is negated by old grounds remaining in the grinder indefinitely.

After another week, she carefully packed it up, and put it away in our kitchen closet, where it’s been ever since (months ago). She went back to grinding coffee beans in our old, very reliable Oskar which she claims produces an excellent coarse grind of just the right size that experts recommend as ideal.

And fast and simple to clean. So you can’t win ’em all, and that’s why I gave it 3 stars.

Why do I like it? * It has a nice look with the majority being shiny stainless steel housing. * The hopper on the top holds a half pound of beans. * You have a choice of many settings for every type of grind you choose.

* It does great on coarse grind for our French Press coffee, very uniform. * You hit the button and it stops when it is done grinding. * Once you figure out what grind you like, how much you want and what setting you prefer it is a simple process and then you just have to decide what kind of bean you want in there.

It does the rest. * It is fairly easy to clean up, doesn’t take up too much space and best of all it works great and does it all quite fast. If either of us had anything negative to say about it, we’d have to say it is loud, but then if you aren’t hand grinding, what isn’t loud when it comes to grinding coffee via electricity? We’re happy with the product.

I ordered this coffee grinder when my old one finally burned out. I knew I wanted a burr grinder and I had heard of this brand before so I thought I would take a chance on it. This grinder is actually amazing! It has 20 grind settings so I can grind for any style and any coffee maker I plan on using that day.

( I have a drip, Keurig, French press and espresso machine). The grinding is smooth and relatively quiet compared to other grinders I’ve owned. I really like the 12 cup capacity- I can grind coffee for an entire pot at one time.

The ground coffee is automatically dispensed into the container so it also keeps messes to a minimum. Best of all, it’s a push button operation and is compact and easy to store right on my countertop.

Definitely a good buy for the money. I’d recommend to all coffee lovers.

I have enjoyed this machine more than expected because of the adjustable grinding levels (coarse to fine). Set it for the number of cups, dial in the coarseness of your grind, push the button, and you are ready to brew in seconds! I use it every day; all burr grinders make some noise.

But this one is actually pretty quiet compared to my previous grinder. The adjustment is precise, and for a daily pot of coffee, it makes the coffee go farther and tastes better over my old blade grinder.

For the current price and functions, I am delighted. Would highly recommend this product to anyone!.

I bought this to replace an aging “Mr Coffee” burr grinder that I had felt was starting to lose its abilities. The first few grinds with the Cuisinart grinder seemed fine. The grinds were the right size and the timing and amount of coffee ground seemed right at first.

Mind you, I only grind coffee once a day – in the morning. Shortly after about two weeks of using this machine, the amounts provided by the timing device became less and less. I had to manually add time and wonder if I was grinding too much – My previous grinder never had this problem and it was over 8 years old.

I should mention, the previous grinder and the Cuisinart have the exact same mechanism – so why the drastic difference in performance? The grind size consistency started going out of control as well.

I use a Bunn standard coffee machine which has very short brew times and requires a finer grind to get the coffee just right. Even with the dial set all the way to the left (fine) the grinds were much larger than they needed to be for this brewer.

I begrudgingly brought the old grinder back onto the counter and it performed just as I expected and gave the grind required. Consistently. I expected much more out of the Cuisinart name and was, sadly, let down.

I realized it’s just a name in a time when a name doesn’t mean higher quality, just a higher price. I foolishly tossed the receipt because I was emboldened by the fact that I had just purchased “cuisianart” and I “wouldn’t have any problems with such a fine machine,” boy was that an incorrect statement.

Now, I’m stuck with a kitchen appliance which will do little more than collect dust until I finally feel I can dispose of it properly.

Had a blade grinder and a neighbor who used to have a coffee business until he retired suggested we get a burr grinder. After doing some research on the web, I had three prospects to consider for purchase.

One was double the price of my Cuisinart and one was $8. 00 less. After checking with my neighbor friend, he said for performance versus value, I couldn’t go wrong with the Cuisinart. After my purchase and reading directions for operation, all seemed to go as predicted except halfway through the grind with a full hopper, it stopped.

This was on medium setting for a Cuisinart coffee brewer. After waiting a minute, I turned back on and all was right. The grind was good and the coffee we made from it was excellent. The only thing I’ve noticed different than all the comments made was that mine stops at about half way through a full hopper, but after the minute of shutdown, I turn back on and complete the grind.

This is a very neat product with many different grind options from espresso to French roast grind with cup size options. It does a great job grinding properly in all settings. The only thing I would tell people is you have to adjust the cup setting for the type of coffee brewed or grinding.

It even recommends this in the Instructions. For instance, if you’re grinding espresso you may need less cups ground because it’s finer ground to brew a cup of espresso. Conversely, you may need to grind additional cups of coffee for French press as it is coarser ground.

I currently grind 6 cups at course ground to make 4 cups of French press coffee. I like my coffee Rich and dark but not super dark to where it’s bitter. This formula works perfect for me. You have to experiment a little for your personal taste.

I had been using a manual burr grinder and bought this to automate my morning routine a little. I would say that for what I was using it for-Chemex and Kalita pour overs, it was fine. But I noticed right away that my little manual burr grinder gave a more consistent grind than this one.

Still, I could work with it and was able to make great coffee in the medium course range for a year and a half. I like the glass container. And I liked that I didn’t have to be overwhelmed with a zillion settings (more on that later).

My disenchantment started when I began making cold brew-this would apply to any immersion methods in the course range. The find becomes very inconsistent at the high end, which is strange because Bodum specializes in immersion brewing.

But it wasn’t just the consistency-I really noticed how flimsy this thing is when you turn all the way to the most coarse setting. Sometimes the hopper actually fell off during the grind. Like it was shaken loose or something.

And then it stopped working. I believe I was following the instructions, limiting to grinding to 20 seconds (usually less because most days I was grinding less than 30gm, which takes about 10-15 sec).

I would grind my cold brew in 2-3 batches, resting between. But really doing course grinding is what seems to have done the damage. The motor was running, the burrs were turning if there was nothing in them, but as soon as a coffee bean hit the burrs, they jammed.

A coffee bean-you know, what it is supposed to grind. A lot of reviews call this an “entry level” burr grinder, good for the price. Yes, it is significantly less expensive than most burrs. And if you are going to grind the same coffee the same way, somewhere in the drip/pour over range, day after day, then it is probably fine to save the money and get this.

I have since bought a more expensive, higher quality, more versatile grinder and honestly wish I had just shelled out the bucks back when I bought this. We’ll see if the new one lasts significantly longer, but It sure is sturdier, and I get a more consistent grind across the whole range (excluding espresso but that’s a whole different thing).

I am also appreciating the multiple settings because I drink a wide variety of coffees to get a wide range of taste experiences, and being able to optimize the grind for the roast/process/origin and brew method is a lot of fun.

So if I could turn back the clock I would have saved the $100 and stuck with my manual burr grinder until I was ready to shell out $300 for something better.

I bought this grinder in December 2020 and it is still going strong, grinding evenly and making far better coffee than any blade grinder ever could. For the $$ it is a super value. It can be a bit messy after some time, but if you lean the grinder one way or another before pulling the carafe that holds the grounds out, the last residual bits will fall out and it will remain much cleaner.

Can’t say that I remember to do that, though. It’s before I’ve had my coffee, after all. Still, for the money this is a fabulous grinder. For espresso I will probably need to upgrade to an espresso grinder, but with drip, French press, or Aeropress etc (we use ours mostly with Aeropress) it makes a huge difference.

The Aeropress already makes great coffee and we use quality beans like Stumptown or a local roaster, but after buying this grinder we did notice a marked improvement in the quality of the coffee. This is superb with the Areopress – I use it close to, but not quite at, the finest setting.

The grind is quite quick, even, and the machine is super simple to set up, refill, and operate. I don’t find it too loud, personally. Bottom line: if you’re making due with a blade grinder, this will be a huge, affordable improvement.

And this is a coffee grinder, not an espresso grinder – though it does do much better on the fine grind side of things and will get you reasonably close – especially if you’re just working with a cheaper, pressurized portafilter machine.

If you’re upgrading to a prosumer espresso machine, you will probably want a grinder capable of going a bit finer than this one. Paired with an Aeropress, correct temp water, and good beans, well, that’s truly a hard set up to beat for how delicious the coffee is for the $$.

Definitely recommend.

I bought the Bodum 11750 a year ago. Within a few months it stopped grinding on the fine grind setting, ie it became so clogged the coffee did not empty into the catch basin. I read on line that the problem is with the oils in the coffee.

Oily coffee, recognizable in most brands by a shiny brown bean surface, simply will not pass through the Buono 11750 system. That’s because the freshly ground coffee is caught first in a small slot, about 1.

25x. 5x. 5”, first. If the ground coffee is oily it packs rather than passes through, the grinder heats up and stops. Once this happens you must empty out the bean bin on top ( do this over an appropriately sized bowl), tap the coffee grinder gently to dislodge the major amount of clogged ground coffee, turn the grinder upside down and use a small brush and a clean chop stick to scrape out the remaining ground coffee caught in the nooks and cranny’s of the grinder and that small part of the ground coffee Shute.

Needless to say this is a time consuming process. I also discovered the oily Shute, even when cleaned, is still sticky enough to impede new coffee I purchased that was not oily textured. The result is I have a $100 grinder that grinds only course and medium course coffee beans that are bone dry.

Anything else refuses to go through. On top of that, the grinder does NOT, as advertised, produce a consistent grind diameter product. The coffee always has large and small diameter coffee pieces.

I’ve been using the Sette 270Wi for a couple of weeks now. Firstly, the grind quality and particle size consistency for espresso specifically is far superior to the Breville Smart Grinder Pro I was previously using.

There is plenty of range to play with and the secondary stepless adjustment ring provides plenty of further control. Grind by weight is also a fabulous workflow once you get the hang of it. It’s really easy to adjust one variable at a time and let the grinder take care of the rest.

In my experience so far, once calibrated, the grinder is usually accurate to within 0. 1-0. 2g on nearly all occasions. When it isn’t, it makes the adjustment for next time, and what I’ve found particularly useful if the grinder slightly underdoses is the short burst function you can use by a quick press of the start/stop button which ejects an additional ~0.

1g at a time. Retention seems very low, very little static, a FAST grind for a home machine, and a very clean and intuitive workflow. The build quality is good, though not excellent – stainless steel where there needs to be, plastic everywhere else – but there is reassuring weight to the grinder.

I would add that I give this 5 stars as an espresso grinder, which is what I bought it for. I installed one of the provided shims, which dials it in to being finer and this would make pour-over or immersion style grinds practically unfeasible.

It is quite loud, as a lot of reviews will mention, but in my opinion not excessively so. If noise is an issue for you, perhaps look elsewhere. It’s certainly not a grinder for everything or everyone, but if you’re looking for a primarily espresso grinder with very intuitive workflow and consistency at an affordable price, I would totally recommend it.

I did a lot of research before I bought this to pair with my Rancilio Silvia (which I have used pretty much everyday since I bought it in 2017 with only regular maintenance). The Baratza Sette was a relatively new and exciting product when I bought it in 2020 and I was super excited when I first got it.

Positives include- grinds quickly. Has a decent sized hopper, timer function works great, easy to dial in your espresso shots, grinds fine and course. No retention through grind design! Easy to take apart and clean etc.

Overall a great design. Negatives- THIS GRINDER IS VERY LOUD! I’ve used plenty of grinders (home/commercial use) and this is by far the most abrasive sounding grinder right out of the box. In my experience (and plenty others online) it only gets louder the longer you use it.

Its not just that its loud, it is the frequency and vibration of the noise that is super abrasive early in the morning before you’ve even had any coffee! Not enjoyable at all for anyone in earshot. Simple google search reveal that the increasing noise is now a know issue with the Sette motor and gearbox assembly 🙁 – Yes impacts all models.

Unfortunately for my long suffering housemates and neighbours mine is still working, some give out a fatal bang and then stop grinding all together- see youtube. Now outside of the 12 month warranty you are looking at $220 AUD for a new motor (220V) and gearbox assembly which is apparently very easy to replace yourself.

just as Baratza! However I am going to look at a quality product that actually performs the designed function for longer than the warranty period without waking the neighbours and keeps GARBAGE OUT OF LANDFILL.

Bottom line: Good quality, stylish, versatile, sustainable, zero retention grinder with amazing customer service. First, the cardinal rule for espresso and ‘all things coffee’ is to put your money towards a good quality burr grinder first.

I have four of these. I have a 270 for me, and then I’ve gotten three more for each of my three kids as they went off to college as graduation gifts, per the cardinal rule. Here are some thoughts:1. If you want zero retention, single dose grinding across various brew methods, with espresso being one of them, this is the grinder.

I have a rancilio Silvia Machine and I also like pour over. So I have the standard burr set and metal 270 adjustment ring so I can dial in espresso. The fine tuning makes a difference if you have a Gaggia Classic/Rancilio Silvia or better Espresso machine.

BUT for my pour over, I bought from their website their s2 course burr set, nozzle, and plastic Sette 30 adjustment ring (less than $50 for everything that set) so I can quick switch out my burr sets for pourover.

So in the AM, I grind and pull espresso for the kids drinks with the 270 burr set, and switch out the s2/30 burr set to grind beans for my pourover, and this way I don’t get the fines from the espresso in my pourover grind.

Zero retention means I don’t waste a gram of coffee. which adds up. 2. Refurbished models are great. I’ve gotten their refurbished models at least twice from Baratza’s website WHEN they have them. I think you save $50? They work like a charm.

I did have problems on one of them, but Baratza serviced the heck out it which takes me to point 3, the most important. 3. Things break. The ability to repair these, have them repaired, get parts direct from Baratza WITH amazing customer service is worth the cost.

I’ve had less expensive grinders (Capresso) which worked great, but once they broke, they were landfill fodder, while Baratza’s are made to be serviced or repaired. Sustainability is important to me, and I’m kind of a DIY guy that does my own Rancilio/Baratza repairs, but Baratza does have a mail in option.

And even if you are not a DIY person, they do have repair videos, etc, as the electronics and mechanics of a grinder isn’t too intense. I will say that to get into the grinder, you need a torx bit set.

Most recently I found a used 270 for WAY under market value from a private seller, and when it came, it had some issues that if you don’t know how to fix things, might have made the grinder useless. However, I was able to open it up, get replacement parts, and service it so it’s as good as ‘refurbished.

‘ Fixability is key. 4. Finally, their customer service is amazing. I can’t stand emailing companies, but Baratza is quite fast with their response time (usually within a day) and they have always advised, and sent out parts as needed in a timely manner.

They have aways exceeded expectations!.

Got this grinder as a gift, and it worked beautifully as described. Perfect, except the mess it makes on the counter when emptying the gounds in the glass collector to my coffee jar. Then I realized this was due to the static electricity generated from the high speed grinder.

After trying a couple of methods of splashing fine drops of water to the insides of the glass collector I hit upon a compeletly simple method. I just take a big breath and gently blow air into the glass collector a couple of times.

Then after putting the rubber lid on, I blow air again through the hole in lid before I started the grinding. The small of moisture from the breathed out air is enough to just moisten the glass and neutralize the static electricity.

After the grinding, I blow another breath through the hole before I take off the lid. This may sound a bit crude and unsanitary, but the coffee is for my own personal use, and the grinds are used up within days.

You can’t believe how this reduces the mess to nearly zero. Now I completely love this grinder.

Changed from my blade grinder to burr becuase of recommendations of friends. This Capresso Grinder is compact and does not take up much kitchen space. It was rated pretty good. It has a small bean holder on top for about 8-10 oz of beans.

There is a grind selection on the side which sets the burr, the cup selector on the front is like a timer on how much to grind. There is a 1 touch button on top to start the grind. Both the top and bottom cups are darkened plastic to prevent bright light exposure to the beans.

The ground coffee flows into the bottom cup and you will need to tap it, per the instructions and my experience, to get any loose grounds to fall into the cup before you remove it. The grind can stick to the sides like static electricity.

I then remove and tap the lid and base into my filter to the loose grind and dust. It does include a little brush to clean out, which I mainly use to clean out the area behind the cup where the grinds come from.

You can pull out some peices in the top section to clean. No issues so far.

Been using for about 6 months now and have gone through almost 100 ounces of coffee beans. The whole device is very compact, has darkened bean storage for a little more than half a pound of beans. It is ONE BUTTON automatic activation.

Adjusts for TIME of grind and SIZE of grind. Grind cup pops out and holds more than enough for a 12 cup coffee maker. It will leave some coffee dust in the back when you pop it out, but easy to clean with the small included brush.

I usually tap the lid into the filter and after pouring the grind cup, I will tap the cup to get most of the dust out. Not a big deal, as every grinder will leave some dust. It will lightly coat the sides of the grind cup, and mostly comes out with a tap.

Overall a great burr grinder that does not take up room, adjustable and automatic.

We needed a second coffee grinder for our seasonal camp. We wanted a burr grinder but didn’t want to spend a lot for something we would not be using all the time. Capresso has a good name, so we went this this one and have been very disappointed.

It’s very loud. If the plastic top is not seated firmly, it won’t grind. The grinds come out of the side of the grinder, so some always spill out when you remove the cup. The grounds are difficult to get out of the cup due to a tremendous build up of static.

Finally, the rectangular cup is an odd shape to try and pour into a round coffee filter and frequently some of the grounds end up falling onto the counter or into the coffee maker. I regret my purchase and would discourage anyone from purchasing this particular model.

Overall, and considering the price, I’ll give this grinder a 4-star rating. I needed to upgrade from an older burr grinder with one that will be primarily for my drip and pour-overs, but can serve as a back up for my espresso machine if my current espresso grinder (Eureka Silencio) should ever fail, and the Breville Smart Grinder Pro checked all the minimum boxes, including a budget limit of $200.

The user interface is good once you understand the programming/operational interface. It gives me a fairly consistent grind, and does so in a reasonable amount of time and at a lower noise level than my previous grinder.

The magnetic latches are a nice touch, and I appreciate the bottom catch tray that is easily removable. On to some areas that could use improvements: – During the grinding process, the pitch of the motor changes frequently -> a more powerful motor would be beneficial.

– Static. As others have mentioned, there is a fair amount of static generated and especially on the bottom side of the grinds container cover. TIP: put a few drops of water in the beans before grinding and the static will be greatly reduced.

Engineering with different materials and flow design can improve the static generated (my Eureka is outstanding at not generating static – no water drops needed!) – Grinds retention -> there is a lot in the chamber and chute.

This will cause staleness and bitterness over time, and as others have pointed could cause premature damage to the impeller (secondary upgrade opportunity Breville -> use a metal impeller). Frequent cleanings are necessary.

– Appreciate there is an adjustable finer/coarser setting on the removable burr. Some have indicated that it still can be a challenge to get really coarse grinds for French Press like applications and at the coarsest settings more grind size variability occurs -> likely could be addressed with upgraded burr design?.

As I am new to brewing espresso, I opted for the Smart Grinder Pro (SGP) to go with a new Breville Bambino Plus. The SGP does an adequate job of grinding beans fine enough for espresso. It is easy to use and maintain and has some nice design features.

It is not particularly large, is well styled, and looks nice on the counter top. its has a large hopper that holds a pound of beans and is well designed for taking on and off. There is also a safety switch that prevents using the grinder with the hopper removed.

The portafilter cradle is held in place with a magnet and is easily removed if desired. The grind start switch behind the portafilter cradle is handy allowing one hand operation. Micro adjustments of the upper burr is helpful to achieve extra fineness if needed.

The grinder does produce static and does retain some grind, although after about three doses the retention becomes less. I would prefer a little more power from the motor and the plastic drive gears worry me as they are easily stripped with a hard bean or small rock caught in the burrs.

There are work arounds to maximize the performance of the SGP. I prefer to single dose and weigh the beans. I modified the grinder with a third party single dose kit that has a bellows to help minimize retention.

That with a small water spritz of the beans has almost eliminated the retention problem. An important thing to know is that the burr adjustment is continuous and can be set to a position between the digital readings.

Overall it is a very good grinder for the price and one would have to spend 2-3 times as much to see an appreciable improvement in performance. At this point I am happy with the grinder, recognizing that to go beyond entry level will cost a whole lot more, both in grinder and machine.

Great entry level machine. would be fantastic to have it come with bellows or a separate single dosing hopper. psst breville, im not the only one that would like this. all round great for home use with reliable and straightforward adjustability.

it is well built and breville customer support has always been quick and reliable in helping out if something goes wrong. The one feature i can no longer live without is its grind size range being quick and easy to adjust and fine tune even with a large range.

will do anything from espresso to plunger. at first u might be able to do turkish coffee too but over time the burrs wear and it is not designed for that. I also had the dose control grinder as well from breville and the main advantage i have found is the dose control’s grind setting sometimes changes under the impact of the beans getting ground.

I havent had any problems with static and the retention is very minimal. dark roasts are a little violent but it will handle it like a champ. light roasts are usually okay but very light roasts can cause a bit of a struggle like trying to crack a rubber band but I have never stalled the motor or have any bad grinds.

it can be a bit finicky to try and fit a dosing funnel or shot collar with the portafilter holder not having enough vertical space. but this also means that grounds rarely miss the basket.

I upgraded to this grinder after the ceramic burr on my Hario cracked inside of a year. (The ceramic burr on my last Hario lasted many years of nearly daily use). Prima rep recommended it and it gets very high reviews.

Here’s a contrary view: The grinder is very tall and very narrow. I have to stash it in the corner of my counter or I’m afraid that this expensive hand grinder will fall. Seriously – what a poor design.

The height also makes it impossible to grind unless I’m seated. I’ve spent the last 10 years moving around my kitchen grinding my coffee. Now I have to sit in a chair and position the grinder between my legs.

Yes, the steel burr sharply cuts through the beans, but it’s very awkward. In addition, making adjustments to the grind is a pain in the neck. There are three parts that move in a variety of directions.

The various rings have a tendency to all move while making adjustments, which means that you can easily lose track of what setting you’re aiming for. Finally, maybe because it’s a steel burr, ground coffee (even at a relatively course grind for pour over coffee) gets attached to and stuck up in the burr and on the rings, which means that I have to use the brush almost every time, lest coffee grinds end up everywhere or the collection bin not screw on properly.

Having now laid all of this out, I’m thinking I’m going to reach out about returning this and replacing it with another Hario. Yes, it’s had its problems, but for almost $200, a hand grinder should have more positives than this.

Everything you hear about the LIDO series grinders is true – those with far more experience and expertise than I have gone over it’s functionality in detail – there’s no need for me to do that. This is a fine grinder.

However, one thing that I think is often underestimated is just how fast this thing grinds. For a grind in the medium range, like most people would use for a pourover, it will grind extremely fast if you are willing to put in a little effort.

Like, 1 gram per second. I routinely grind medium-fine for Aeropress (8 clicks in from the “blue line” center) and a relaxed pace, I can get through 15 grams in 45 seconds or so. If you are not averse to the “exercise”, don’t be afraid of this hand grinder.

I can comfortably grind 2 batches of 40 grams for 2 separate pourovers and not feel like it’s taking any longer than the normal process with an electric grinder. There’s just a little more effort involved, but not an appreciable amount of extra time.

It’s also no very hard to grind – even with “firmer” beans, both my wife and my 60 year old mother had no issues using it. Again, the only “downside” is the extra effort. However, in an age when we increasingly “sit and click” in our jobs and personal lives, I don’t see it as a downside whatsoever.

Get a bit of blood flowing while you make your coffee with this outstanding grinder.

I love coffee, but honestly, the fresher it is, the more I enjoy it. I like to buy whole coffee beans at the store and then use this coffee grinder to grind them up. The grinder comes with a handle that you just pop on and you can remove the top to insert any coffee beans of choice.

Simply twist the handle and grind those beans. The taste of the coffee is so much fresher and delicious. I also like that this comes with a storage pouch so I can travel with it. I can make myself some amazing coffee while on vacation too.

I love coffee but I only drink my brand. So, when I’m on the go it’s hard to get coffee I can drink. This portable grinder makes it so easy for me to grind my own beans and take them with me so I always have my own brand of coffee on hand.

Very sturdy built and works great. Easy to use even with arthritis in my hands. I would definitely recommend this product.

What a wonderful cup of coffee. Starting with fresh beans ground in this grinder, I made the best coffee ever! I love the design and ease of use, but the best thing is the flavor and smell of the fresh coffee.

This is a great, economical grinder!.

First of all, the grinder is beautiful. It has a simple design and is a good size. The grind is sufficiently fine for a bottomless portafilter, I dialed mine in at around a level 9 (these grinders go to eleven).

* This being a stepless grinder means you have a lot of control, which is great for fine tuning. The grinds are consistent and is great for espresso. The only downsides are the clumping, which a WDT tool helps, and the mess.

But I’m considering getting a dosing cup to help catch more grinds. Overall, a great grinder for the price. Highly recommend. *Yes this was a Spinal Tap reference.

This grinder looks amazing and seems well built, but…coffee exits the chute all clumped up. It blocks the chute and ground coffee has to force it’s way out instead of leaving gravity do it’s job. Just as an exemple, I cleaned the grinder, and grind 18grams to my portafilter, can you imagine there is 15 grams stuck in the chute!!! What a mess.

So I sent an email 6 days after having bought this machine, but no can do, it’s a final sale. I would have exchanged it for an Eureka, but I was offered about 175$ as a trade in ;-( I now have used this machine for about 6 coffees and it now sits in my basement collecting dust.

Do I recommend it? Not for espresso, maybe for filter coffee only. I can’t believe something so we’ll made having an issue like this coffee retention.

I chose Ascaso I-mini because it matches with the Dream PID. The look with the wooden accent is amazing! However, after 8 months of usage, I must say that I’m disappointed. The adjustement is very difficult and retention is ridiculously high.

When freshly cleaned, the grinder will keep around 3g at the first shot! After some days of usage, when I clean it, I can easily extract 7g of coffee from the nozzle. Basically, the freshly grinded beans just push the old coffee from the last usage.

When the coffee goes out the nozzle, there are a lot of coffee clumps and the grinder jam very often. The flow is not constant, it falls by chunk. At the end, it’s barely impossible to dial-in a new coffee.

I ended by finding the setting for my most favorite coffee bean and never touching it even if I change the coffee beans. Which is quite disappointing for a 400$ grinder. After IDC team confirmed that my observations were all normal for this grinder, I bought a Eureka Mignon Silenzio (love it!).

I was in the market for a new grinder, upgrading from the Rancilio Rocky doserless, in need of a grinder that I could use for BOTH drip coffee and espresso that is quick and quiet and not TOO large for our small kitchen.

I run a home-based coffee roasting business so I also wanted a grinder that I could occasionally use to grind my customer’s beans, hence upgrading from the Rocky. I did quite a bit of research prior to purchasing the Mazzer SJ and understood that the SJ is primarily used for espresso due to the fact that it’s difficult to make adjustments on the stepless adjustment.

Nevertheless, I took the plunge and ordered the SJ in white (to satisfy my wife’s color preference) and haven’t been happier! It took some time to dial in the grind for espresso and drip but once dialed in, the results are extremely rewarding! I also used a wax Sharpie peel off marker to make notches on the adjustment dial to mark for espresso and drip coffee for quick reference.

I’ve set the single dose auto adjustment for espresso dosing and the double dose adjustment for drip which works great for my purposes. The grinding speed is double that of my Rocky which is a plus and the sound is no louder than that of my previous grinders! I had the guys at iDrinkCoffee replace the stock larger hopper with the mini hopper which works pretty good for my small kitchen and perfect for my low dosing needs at home.

I’m amazed at how the results in my espresso shots improved over my previous grinders. The grinds are fluffy and result in thick, sweet home-roasted crema-filled espresso from my La Pavoni lever espresso machine.

This grinder is beautiful, built like a tank, and has been a positive upgrade from the Rocky! Anyone thinking that you cannot use this grinder for both espresso and drip at home is wrong. It works great for my needs and I look forward to using this grinder at home for years to come!.

Having had a Vario for about 10 years, this was a wonderful upgrade. The build is super solid, the polished look is incredible, and being able to control the dosing by 1/10 of a second is pretty awesome! The machine itself is a good size even for under the kitchen cabinet.

The shots have been fantastic! So far, very consistent! Hoping the track record of the machine and how well but it is will give us consistent shots for years to come!.

This is my third grinder, so I have quite a few years of experience with espresso, drip, and press grinds. The adjustability of this grinder is excellent. The grinder comes “calibrated”, but the recommended setting for espresso is much too fine for my Silvia; it just can’t force the water through the puck.

This is a desirable thing because I replaced my last grinder because it had trouble grinding fine enough for good espresso extraction. It took a few tries to ballpark the espresso setting but the fine adjustments were fairly quick.

The drip setting was pretty much what is suggested in the Quick Start Guide. One of the reasons I chose this model is that it has a ground coffee container, in addition to the portafilter holder. The hopper is tinted, but clear, plastic and an LED illuminates the hopper while the grinder is operating.

That is a very nice feature. The portafilter holder is more than a wire support; it is an entire assembly that slides in place of the ground coffee container and it is very heavy (sturdy). The bean hopper and lid are also tinted clear plastic.

The bean hopper has a shutoff control so that it can be removed and emptied with minimal mess.

Received 1st Vario from Clive Coffee early March 2021. It arrived dirty so had to clean it. Called Clive and was told they did dial in service but it should have been cleaned prior to shipping. Ultimately returned it to Baratza as defective.

Grinds were getting into interior of grinder and after a few grinding attempts it stopped grinding altogether. Received new grinder promptly from Baratza of March 26, 2021. Have had better luck with this grinder but it is very, very difficult getting dialed in for espresso.

Believe what Clive Coffee says about being ready to use a full 16oz bag of coffee to get dialed in. I used 2× more than that! Grinds good for pour-over which as you know is not a critical grind. As summer arrived, I live in Indiana, switched to cold-brew buying it pre-ground from roaster.

This last batch of cold-brew decided to try using Vario to grind it for course for cold-brew instead of buying pre-ground. Vario is not very good at grinding course! Talked to a Baratza representative and was told the Vario-886 with ceramic burrs is NOT good for cold-brew grind, that burrs just don’t far enough apart.

Wish I had known this before purchasing. On another note, the two little prongs that hold the macro ajustment lever (handle) broke off on 9/22. Called Baratza to their credit they shipped replacement right away.

Today is just 9/25 so haven’t yet received the estimated delivery date is 9/27. I gotta say as an AP grinder I am not impressed. I probably should have stuck with my conical burr grinder. Unfortunately I gave away my conical grinder when I got Vario because I don’t have space for 2 grinders.

In future when going to cold-brew will buy pre-ground from roaster. Will only use Vario for espresso, pour-over and maybe French press. Although, since it (Vario) doesn’t do course welll it may not be cause enough for FP either.

Another issue I have with Vario ceramic is that according to the manual on page 12 it says to calibrate with macro lever on 1 and to listen for change in sound of burrs at M on micro lever. The Clive video suggest 2Q as adjustment is factory adjustment.

Which is it?.

I bought the Baratza vario-w because it does weight based dosing and apparently there are reliability issues with the sette 270 which I was not willing to take a chance on. I believe the thing should just work, especially if you’re paying almost $1k for it.

The good: It grinds pretty consistent and I get great espresso shots from this grinder, so for that it works really great. 5 stars! The bad: Since I bought it online I couldn’t get a feel for it, see it or see how it operates.

I bought it based in what I see on online videos etc. 1. It ONLY does weight, you cannot have a timer function. It is something so simple to implement. Big missed opportunity. 2. No portafilter holder for grinding directly into.

This is what I saw online and got mixed up with the different models. I was 100% sure it came with a portafilter holder to grind directly into. No it doesn’t. Another big missed opportunity right there especially for something that costs almost $1k.

Only the timed version i. e. the cheaper Vario has a portafilter holder. This one grinds into a bin and then you need to pour the bin contents into the portafilter, so messy! 3. No manual?! It doesn’t come with a manual just a piece of paper showing you how everything fits together.

When I switched the grinder on I had blades touching, it would’ve been nice if there was a piece of paper just to give some basic guidance that for example the factory calibration is that at the blades should just touch at 2Q setting so obviously set your grinder for something larger than 2Q?! 4.

I had to adjust the grinding coarseness setting with the same batch of beans i. e. I had to jump from 4S 5S (I know that 4 or 5 seems to rough but I was not going to meddle with the factory calibration, I did pay almost $1k for this grinder, it should be right from the factory), to get my espresso pressure back up to 9 Bar.

Maybe it’s just the machine’s parts settling in. If I had to buy again would I buy this? Maybe, I don’t know. I’ll try to get something with a portafilter holder like the sette 270. But will the sette 270 last?.
