20 Best Enrichment Toys For Dogs (2023 Updated)

It is nearly impossible to find toys my heavy chewer dogs do not chew through, and Kongs like this are really the only things that last. My tiny dachshund mix used to chew on these years ago and would chew off tiny specks of the edges (which I have no idea how she did that) But she’s not interested in these types for a very long time.

My two previous big dogs always had these on hand, and I didn’t even put any treats inside. My newest big dog has destroyed every single thing I have gotten him except this. At first he was only interested in stuffed types, but I stopped ordering them for him and only left my two Kong’s and now he only chews on these.

There are other types that worked for my heavy chewers years back But they eventually chipped quite a few teeth. But I’ve had a talk with my vet where we agreed it was worth it to us for them to have some dental work every now and then instead of destroying the house.

Anyway, these are a lifesaver if your dogs are into them. If they are not into them maybe do what I did and take away every other toy where they eventually have no choice and realize they are just fine.

I’ve noticed our husky/Kelpie mix intensely watch us do things like put stuff in drawers, open & close things, so I figured I’d try one of these puzzles. Right now she’s 6 mos old and getting into everything so I felt like she’d guess the Level 1 puzzle pretty quickly so I bought the Level 2-3 one.

I didn’t fill all of the pockets at first, just the “bones” to see if she would be smart enough to move them. She only used her nose and teeth to move them, and it took her some encouragement from us but she found all 4 but she also wanted to run off and chew the bones.

I didn’t think she’d open the flip lids so I left the bones out and put treats under them. She sniffed and pushed them around, of course trying to chew on it too. But now with her third time, I filled all 20 spots (used Blue Buffalo Bites Salmon flavor – really fishy smell!) – she “solved” it in under 3 minutes.

Filled it again, solved it in about a minute. (So much for keeping her occupied for 10-15 minutes!) I really didn’t think this would work but I’m so surprised at how much it allows her to focus her otherwise crazy attention to doing this even if it’s for a brief time.

I’m probably going to have to graduate her up to the Level 4 expert level by the end of summer. I’m sure other dogs may just plop themselves down and take their time sniffing out the treats. Watch them and encourage them to find it (they will get frustrated and try to chew it & the lids do pop off so this is NOT SOMETHING YOU CAN LEAVE THEM UNSUPERVISED with – it’s a chance for you to praise them and encourage them to find the treats to keep them focused on the task).

Mix up treat flavors so they can focus on the ones they really like to smell & eat. I wouldn’t recommend putting peanut butter in it because the puzzle is not meant to be chewed on. Definitely put the puzzle out of the dogs reach when done.

This is our first puzzle toy, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I have an 8 month old cavalier king charles spaniel who was recently spayed. Our trainer suggested some enrichment activities to keep her out of trouble.

Here’s what I think. PROS: * It’s fairly sturdy, though my pup isn’t rough with it. Common sense dictates that if your dog is more destructive, you should closely supervise and take it away once all the treats are found.

* Though it doesn’t state so on the box, this can be set for 3 levels of difficulty. First, you can hide treats in the holes and slide the fins over to cover them. To add a layer of difficulty, slide the pegs to lock the fins in place.

This will require the dog to slide the peg before they move the fin. Finally, add some treats to the bonus holes in the pegs. Those can only be found after the dog slides the peg away from the fin, then moves the fin, and finally slides the peg back and forth over the hole to drop and reveal the hidden treasure.

Whew! Got that? CON: * This is a level 2 puzzle. I didn’t start with a level 1 because they seemed too easy. Nonetheless, my pup quickly figured this out, even at the highest level of difficulty. She likes it, and it’s still fun for her, but I was hoping to keep her engaged for more than a few minutes.

Just received a box from Chewie today and my dog knew right away that there was some good stuff inside of it. There were treats in there but I also had the puzzles in there so she was very interested in opening the box.

Once we took the puzzle out and started filling it with kibble, she was super interested and it kept her attention while we filled it for about a full seven minutes which is how long it took her to get all of the treats out.

Then she was still interested in it for a while to make sure that she actually did get all of them. Several times she picked it up and dropped it on the ground so the treats would fall out. I was hoping that the puzzle pieces would snap in a little more sturdily into the base so that if she did pick it up she couldn’t knock the treats out.

I was very pleased at how well it held her attention. I think whenever we do it again, she might resort to just dropping it on the floor again. I’ll repost if that happens. But she’s almost 10 years old and has been pretty lethargic/bored lately.

This activity perked her right up which was very nice to see!.

My 8. 5 pound chihuahua terrier mix looks so excited when I set this puzzle down for her. This level two puzzle is a fun challenge. I think she’d be able to solve it faster if she removed the white bone shaped treat covers completely.

However, she often just nudges them out of the way just enough to eat her kibble. As a result, she has trouble sliding the red squares into the center which means she can get frustrated when she can’t easily reach the treat compartment underneath.

Sometimes she’ll chew on the lid of the red square because she can smell the treats in the compartment below. I’ve been intervening at this point to show her how moving the white bone shaped treat covers over to the floor will allow her to slide the red squares inward so that she can then reach the treat compartment below.

I think she’s starting to catch on— we’ve only had this puzzle for a week. I was pleased that she was able to flip open the lids of the red squares and slide them inward with her nose without too much difficultly.

I was worried that this might be too hard for her but it has provided the right amount of challenge. If your dog is already doing level one puzzle toys, treat balls, and slow feeders with ease I would encourage you to try this puzzle out.

I love that I can look at my pup and see her wheels turning while she’s working this puzzle. My only gripe is that one of the lids has popped off with what I consider gentle use. I was able to re-attach easily but I’d recommend keeping a close eye on your doggo while they use this since it isn’t intended to be a super durable, free access chew toy.

My dogs love to eat meals or treats out of this toy. I had to get a second so they wouldn’t fight over the one. I’ve never had any issues with the blue pieces coming out or not sliding well on either like some people have said, and I purchased two of these with several months in-between from two different stores and they both work great.

I love the there’s a tray you can pull out to load it. At first, I had to show my dogs that the pieces could slide and they took it from there. Within a matter of days they were experts. It’s amazing to sit there and watch they slide each piece with purpose, one after another, as opposed to just pawing at it until something moves like they did in the beginning.

They can solve it pretty fast now, so it’s often better to feed a whole meal in them instead of individual treats. My boys are little so I cut up treats into tiny pieces so they aren’t eating too many calories in treats considering there’s 24 spots to put them.

But then they solve it so quick because they don’t take long to eat. The only downside is the cleaning. My dogs eat moistened kibble so it can get messy; even with dry kibble and treats you need to wash it because of the saliva will grow bacteria.

I use my kitchen sprayer and slide the pieces as I got to make sure to clean in between. Despite this, I still love this product. I will put it away for awhile so they have more interest when I get it out, but when I do leave it out they will go sit and paw at it when they want a meal.

This toy is great for burning off nervous energy when bad weather restricts your walks. It’s made of smooth plastic with no sharp edges. It’s rated Level 3 which is the most challenging. The sliding motion required didn’t come naturally to my dog.

I Found it best to start by teaching him to slide the doors with just one door at at time until he got the hang of it. He likes this best when I sit with him and fill a few cups at a time. He gets so excited that after a 20- 30 minute session he’s ready for a nap.

Tip: Baby carrot slices make a great (non-messy) treat to use with this puzzle.

If you’re looking for a puzzle that will keep your pup busy, this is a good one! Have had this puzzle for several months now and it never fails to keep my pup entertained. He hasn’t quite figured out how the pieces slide but he does scratch at the puzzle until he’s able to get all the treats out of it.

I was worried when I first got it that he would break it because he’s 40 lbs and he steps on the puzzle to get the treats out but it has held up great! It used to take him about 20 minutes to get the treats out but he’s much quicker now.

Once he got the hang of the puzzle, I started using it as a slow feeder for his kibble, and it works great! Overall, I highly recommend!.

Have the dimensions on these toys changed significantly? I ordered two of these balls earlier this year and my pittie mix destroyed the smaller one in days, so we were more careful with the larger one, and it is only recently that she’s taken this one apart.

I ordered a new one — large. My bad for not drilling down into more of the description, because “large” is about the size of a softball. Worthless. I’ll be sending it back. What I was replacing was about the size of a smallish pumpkin.

Dimensions, photos with relevant dog sizes would be super helpful. That said, I also ordered a holee roller extreme, which is about the same size as this pseudo-large, but much thicker in construction.

This might keep her occupied for a while.

Great size for a medium dog that is around 30-50lbs. The inside is a bit tougher which hopefully will hold up. It also has a squeaker in it too and is not loud either. Though the squeaker died from being played with in about 10 minutes.

I just received this in the mail today and I’m in LOVE! It’s so cute and I love that my boy, Jack, can get multiple little toys out of it as he inevitably tears through the layers. The one thing I will say is that the little black spikes are foam and easily are ripped off, which Jack immediately did of course.

I caught him quickly but he definitely ate a couple, whoops. But just rip all of those off first and it’s the perfect toy!.

We bought this for our Great Dane she’s had it for 3 months and our English bulldog has now claimed it as his. He destroys EVERYTHING he has yet to get through the first layer and plays with it daily 10/10 HOGJLYRECOMMEND!!!.

These products are high quality very functional. I was amazed how easy it is to set up the crate, open the box, take it out and pull it up. The quality is unbeatable and I have spent hours researching dog crates.

It will last many years. You know the old saying ” you get what you pay for”, well in this case it is true! You will not be disappointed. The Snooze crate pad is also another quality item. Well made and sturdy.

I also love the Groove Training Aid, is is thick and solid One of the smartest training tools I have seen in years. Diggs certainly impressed me with the quality of the products they offer.

I have put different spreads in yogurt I have made popsicles and the product holds up. I still have a young puppy so I don’t know how this will hold up with a strong chewer. It does promote licking because that’s how your dog can reach his snack and it does calm them and it’s great that it goes in the crate but eventually when the spread or popsicle or whatever it is getting low a dog will chew because dogs are chewers.

It’s not really that big of a deal you just have to supervise your pup and remove it. The really big issue with it is cleaning. I literally have to run boiling hot water over it and use a teeny little wire brush to get all the food off and then I run it through the dishwasher.

That’s why it gets four stars.

This toy was delivered today and I have already thrown it out. It is awful, terrible, and I will never, ever be stupidly suckered into buying something recommended by Wirecutter again. (That’s why this toy is sold out.

Many people are obviously as stupid as I was. ) The toy kept falling apart when my dog rolled it (she got the point of it immediately), the plastic is cheap and junky, the top part is in two pieces that fall apart repeatedly, and even though the price has been reduced, it’s still overpriced for what it is.

I am so sorry I bought it. I have a much better treat-dispensing toy made of thick, quality rubber that I bought several years ago, and if i could read the name on it, I would recommend it in a hearbeat, if they still make it.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS.

This treat ball is great!! My dog will push it around for a long time. He looks so cute hitting the ball with his paw. And he’s always really happy when a treat comes out. We have a large one at home and a small one at work to keep him busy while we’re working.

It’s really durable too. He’ll bat it across the hardwood floor and inevitably it’ll bounce down the stairs and is still totally fine. You can adjust the inside divider to make the opening smaller making it harder to get the treats out.

Highly recommend.

This was a random add-on to push an order into the “free shipping” range. When we got it, I didn’t think it would last. We’ve used it once or twice a day for six weeks now! Our mini-Aussie loves, loves, loves this ball.

It has a slider piece inside, so you can adjust the difficulty/size of treat. At first we left it open wide, but she got so good at it, we keep it at the smallest setting. Initially I didn’t close it tightly enough, and she figured out if she bounced it around enough – still didn’t break! – that she could eventually open up the whole thing, so I am a bit more careful now.

When she was teething, and kibble was painful, I cut up small cubes of cheddar, dusted them very lightly with cornstarch so they wouldn’t stick together, and she was in heaven. Well, well worth it. I will immediately replace it when it meets its inevitable demise.

Dangerous choking hazard my neighbors dog ingested the rubber grommet and is now in the hospital do not buy this toy. Clearly there is a choking hazard as many reviews are about choking. Take this off the market immediately.

My 10 month old 70 lb super chewer needed something to slow down his eating. When we first put his food in there, he tried to just lift it up and bite it, so we had to take it away. After a few days of showing him to push it he finally got it, but would pick it up to bite it when only a few treats left and it was harder to get out.

It is beneficial to slow down his eating and is good for his foraging and hunting instinct.

I gave this to friends for a dog who had never had food puzzles. They found their dog was just confused and didn’t want to do it. So they gave it back to my dog who loves food puzzles including rolling a kibble ball and looking and digging for kibble in folded towels.

My dog is confused and uninterested in this one. The kibble does not fall out the holes readily- the openings to these holes should slope down so it comes right out. Instead the kibble stays inside and she thinks she has to fish it out with her tongue- but that pushes it back in.

The bowl is also a little heavy- maybe a larger dog who paws vigorously at it would do better. My dog is 36 lbs. She rocks it by tipping her nose underneath and seems a little intimidated by the motion of it.

I bought this hoping that I could use it for my food-obsessed cat’s daily kibble, as left out in an open bowl he will eat the entire day’s food in under 2 minutes. Sadly it’s a bit too big and heavy for him to rock more than a few times before putting the whole experience in the too-hard-basket, but he will happily stick his paws in the dispensing holes to grab the kibble within reaching distance.

Another bonus is that it appears to be ant-proof. I’ll be holding onto this for a while longer while he grows (he’s still only 4 months old) to see whether it becomes more usable as he gets bigger, but if it doesn’t it’ll make a great gift for one of my friends’ dogs.

My golden doodle absolutely loves this feeder. I started feeding her with this right away when she came home at 2 mos and she’s 10mos old now and still loves it. Occasionally she can pop the lid in the middle but that might just be from me not securing it.

She is a terror that breaks/chews everything and she hasn’t broken this one. Yeah it’s pretty easy but it slows her down enough that she doesn’t inhale her food. I’ve got some harder ones that we use sometimes but this one is the go to.

If your dog has enjoyed other puzzle toys, this is a good addition. Our dog was slamming through Level 3 toys pretty fast so we wanted to try Level 4, of which there don’t seem to be many to choose from.

This toy is a good mix of difficulty. The square tiles are pretty mindless honestly, your dog can just slap away at them and they’ll find all the food. Even the little orange “roadblock” pieces aren’t that tough; random flailing with the paws will knock those out of the way.

So the outside track is a nice easy warm-up “appetizer”. The circle part is quite hard though. The thing that makes it harder than the Level 3 toys is that they dog needs to move *empty* pieces in order to get the full pieces.

That’s hard since their nose draws them to the full pieces, not the empty ones. When the uncover some food, the green wheel is jammed by an empty orange piece, and they have to understand to move that one before they can get to another full orange piece.

So the wheel part is quite challenging. Even though it looks virtually the same as the Level 3 wheel, it’s not. The other nice thing is that this toy is massive, so you can fit a TON of food in it. Even for a big dog you could put their whole meal in here.

Our only complaint is that this toy has tons of nooks and crannies for food particles and slobber to hide in, and it’s really hard to clean it all. Then once you do have it clean, it takes forever to dry because it’s so enclosed, so there’s no air circulation through all those little pockets.

Some drain holes here and there would help it dry faster.

My 40 lb Border Collie Lab mix used her nose to push the orange pieces underneath the green disc in the middle, exposing the treats underneath and lodging the orange bit under the disc. That’s not how it’s supposed to work.

It was a pain to get them back out. The sliding squares around the edge function fine, but I think most dogs could figure that “puzzle” out very quickly. Unfortunately we only used it a few times before it became pointless — when your dog only takes 45 seconds to get all the treats out of a puzzle, you might as well just hand them the treats.

Despite the design flaw with the orange parts, the materials are pretty durable and withstood a lot of scratching the first 1-2 times she played with it. Cricket also is a highly curious problem solver with a lot of paw dexterity; other dogs might take longer to paw the squares and circles around.

I bought this puzzle for our cur-pointer mix. She is very smart and can usually finish these puzzles in less than 5 minutes. Finally, a puzzle that lasts longer! It took my dog almost 20 minutes just to work through the outside edge.

The puzzle is sturdy, but as my dog became frustrated with how long it was taking, she figured out how to pop the outside sliding pieces off to get the treats. I did not try the inside circle yet. Moving pieces in and out of the circle with her foot will be challenging for my dog.

She prefers to use her mouth when opening puzzles, so it will take some coaching before she can advance to the circle level. Overall a this is a good product. To make it better, I would add little handles to the center pieces for dogs to move with their mouths.

My dog loves wood-tasting chew bones. These contain wood and are enticing and keeps the dog entertained. They don’t wear down quickly. They’re not as hard/tough on dog’s teeth as antler bones. They don’t splinter like some bones and don’t come apart like rawhide.

My dog chews only tiny pieces at a time; she basically gnaws on it rather than chews. She can take a rawhide apart in a few minutes, but these wood bones last a long time since she only gnaws on them.

I like that they come in several sizes. The XS or S may be too small for small breeds, but my 9-lb. minpin chews the S or M size ones on her own. I hold the XS for her to chew once the size gets too small and safety might become an issue.

First of all, they are super affordable. Second, we have two weimaraners. Our youngest one is a chewer/destroyer. I used to get him meat flavored hard chew toys from HomeGoods and he’d eventually start pulling off and eating plastic bits which really scared me.

He and my girl, who isn’t even a big chewer, LOVE these and I feel better about his ingestion of little bits. He’s always supervised while he chews, but we haven’t had any issues. Highly recommend!.

My younger Aussie who will be 2 in March likes this, but then again she is more of a chewer than my older Aussie. She will chew this night, really haven’t seen her pick this up during the day. Doesn’t smell and doesn’t make a mess.

I bought the medium size for each of them. My two dogs are so different. The younger Aussie rips up every toy she has ever had. I wish that some dog toy company would make more toys that don’t have any stuffing in them, as she loves to get to the squeaker and the insides of every toy.

My GSD loves chewing snacks like bully sticks and bones and antlers. However most of the time even things that are supposed to be able to handle strong chewing he absolutely destroys within minutes, and things that he can’t, like bones filled with marrow or such treats, after he eats the filling down he’ll get frustrated and give up.

So far, this has been a hit with him! It’s chewy enough on its own that it gives him that give reminiscent of his balls, it’s durable enough that he hasn’t ripped it to shreds yet. And it’s easy enough that he can figure out how to get all the snacks out.

And most importantly, it gives me a break from having to play fetch with him every 15 minutes! The only issue is, it might be a little too easy. If I put just kibble or simple treats in there, he’d have them finished in seconds.

I feel a better design would have a silicone flap over the fill hole, allowing it to be filled easily, but still take a little bit of thought to figure out how to dump it.

This is hands down my dogs favorite toy and the one he spends the most time playing with. I fill it up with some treats or kibble cover it with peanut butter. He spends a few minutes licking off the peanut butter, a few minutes getting the treats out and throwing the toy around and a few minutes chewing it afterwards.

He gets anywhere from 5-20 minutes playing time with it. And it’s fun to watch him think while trying to get them out.

My Miniature Fox Terrier loves this toy. It’s the perfect size for his tiny mouth. It keeps him entertained for quite some time. He finds it much easier to get bits of frankfurt out as they’re smooth, but some small chunks of salami with a rougher surface last for ages.

A definite winner.

My large (65-70 lb. ) Husky loves his Kong and, some days, it’s the only thing that gives him any solo entertainment. I assumed he’d like this, too, but you just never know. I gave it to him first without a treat to see what he thought, and he played with it – by himself – for a long time.

If I hadn’t taken it away to put a treat in, he’d have continued most of the night. When I DID give him a goody, he thought it was the most amazing thing. He entertained himself which, in turn, entertained us.

It was a win all around. I wanted to take a picture of him using it but he fell asleep on top of it before I got a chance. 🙂 I’ll say that this is actually superior to Kong in one way: it’s much less spastic when bouncing/ricocheting off things.

Kongs, because of their shape, tend to run and roll away from you when they bounce; this shape, while still unique, is more uniform and acts more like a ball so you can recover it faster/more efficiently.

With these kinds of toys, my dog likes you to tug on it while it’s in his mouth so he can be a tough guy and “kill it,” so I’d say to size up if your dog is on the higher end of the recommended weight because it’s a smidge hard to grab onto while in a large mouth.

The moment I pulled the toy out of the bag, both of our Cocker Spaniels came running. As soon as I tossed it on the floor, it went bouncing away with both dogs in hot pursuit. One would gnaw on the Busy Bounce toy for a bit and then 5he other would get a turn.

Being that I have some fairly active dogs in my life right now, I was excited to try out the new larger sized Titan Busy Bounce Dog Toy when WalMart offered it through their Spark Review program. Since both dogs have very different personalities when it comes to toys and how they play with them, I was curious to see how they would respond to this toy.

First I tried it empty without treats and just let it bounce around, which made the pitbull very happy and then later I stuffed it with some goodies in peanut butter and left it in the freezer for an hour or two.

The contest was on to see who could steal it from the other faster and run with it. It is just heavy enough to make it suitable for chucking it around outside. Once it gets played with and dirty, it is an easy cleanup in the dishwasher and it’s ready to go again.

It seems to be reasonably tough as the pitty did little damage to it. I was curious about the manufacturing of the Busy Bounce and visited their website and found out that the toy is made of 100% FDA safe rubber.

It is made in the USA in Burlington Wisconsin by a family run pet-friendly company.

I have a Presa Canario dog breed and he loves to play and can destroy any toy down the dog isle. I bought this for him and he loved it right away wouldn’t even let my 2 other dogs touch it. He grabs it when he goes out to play or retrieves it when tossed out in the yard.

I would recommend this dog toy as one of the better ones that don’t end up in pieces or down your dogs throat.

We call our black Labrador “El Destructo” when it comes to toys. This one is in its second week of good play with no damage. Great product at a good price.

My little ‘rescue’ terrier loves balls but totally destroyed every treat ball I gave him, tossing them around and barking like a loonie, and chewing them until he totally destroyed them. I thought I’d try this one, without any great hopes of it being any better.

Amazing! He plays with it quietly, and now uses his nose as well as his paws and really enjoys playing with it, the treats come out quickly enough so he doesn’t get frustrated, but I try to make sure the treat are just big enough to not come out too easily, and he really enjoys it.

He doesn’t seem to bother chewing this one like he did the others, but if he did, it’s so robust I’m confident he wouldn’t damage it. I thought it seemed a bit pricey but the quality, and the fun it gives my dog are well worth the price.

My dog absolutely loves this ball! He picked up the method pretty quick but doesn’t ever get bored of it. Easy to use and very sturdy. My dog has tried to chew it but I’ve stopped him. Might not be great for a serial chewer, nothing can stop them! Well worth the money and definitely recommend.
