17 Best Enamel Paint For Metal (2023 Updated)

I’ve used Testors paints since I was a kid for models. The paint was always high quality and long lasting without fading over time. Now my use for the paint is more for touch up work on statues and other things around the home.

The various color paints I ordered arrived quickly, and well packaged in bubble wrap since they are in glass bottles. (about a dozen different colors and a large bottle of thinner) All the colors looked new and fresh.

Ready to mix or use as I need. There was only one small jar of (rubber) colored paint that would not open with a reasonable twist, and I will have to get something grippy to try and get the lid off. So I couldnt tell from the outside if the paint was still good inside yet.

Testors paints are very well known for their caps to be a real pain to remove once opened, IF you dont clean off the edge of the bottle well before closing them up again. (recommended anyway, to keep the seal and your paints from drying out during storage sooner.

) Other than a single troublesome jar (in a color not used very often) I am happy with the paints. None were drying out or looked (chunky) as they might after sitting too long on a shelf with poor climate control.

Though adding a few drops of paint thinned to the paint, and stirring it a bit will often restore the paint to usable form. Just don’t add a lot, If you do you might have to apply more coats to get the colors looking best, or leave the mixed paint in an open bowl for a few to allow it to thicken back up a bit before applying.

This paint is Best applied with an air brush. But you must have patience and let the paint dry before handling. You can stretch a small bottle a long ways, with thinner. Don’t use Home Depot’s brand.

Use the Testors brand for thinning your paints. It meant to work their paint. If you have to brush on a coat of paint, warn up you paint, just Holding it in you hand will work, plus you can shake up your paint at the same time.

Paint straight out of the bottle, way to thick, you need to thin down this paint. I use the eye dropper rule. Here’s where your old testor paint bottle come in, in a clean glass bottle I add my paint, 1/4 new paint then its starts at 5 drops of thinner.

Make sure you have the right thinner for you paint: acrylic paint acrylic thinner,. Enamel uses enamel thinner. Very important. Thin you paint 5 drops first mix and test. Test paint and see if paint goes on smoothly and spreads out without high spots, you want it to lay flat on you part.

Add 2 additional drops until your happy with the consistency. Till next review.

I absolutely love all of the colors of this brand of paint, Testors. It’s like a little bottle of gold and with every brush stroke, it goes on beautifully. It dries fast, doesn’t run, and the colors that are available would make a rainbow jealous.

It’s a small bottle, but the quality is mighty.

This was the closest to the paint that was on my personal alter for my family. The pigment is amazing and it glides nicely. I’ve even used it in paintings and giving my figurines life! I would recommend to anyone looking for gold or other metallics! A little bit went a long way.

I used this to simulate the metal frame around a simulated rubber floor mat made of PVC plastic. I masked the piece and applied the enamel with one stroke. The metallic sheen spread out evenly and looks realistic.

Be sure to stir frequently so it doesn’t separate.

I didn’t know how to rate this, because I received the wrong product. They did not send the satin black even though that is the only reason I ordered online instead of picking up the regular black at Home Depot.

I’ve used it in the past and it works great, but this order was wrong. I didn’t realize it until I painted all of the pieces of my baseboard heaters with it. so I can’t even return them.

I used this paint to cover the non-contact parts of my new brake rotors so they wouldn’t rust. I previously used regular Rustoleum on my propr brakes, and when they would heat up you could smell the paint burning.

So far I have not had this issues with this type of paint. The only reason I knocked off a star, is because this compared to normal paint is VERY thin. It’s hard to get full coverage on a single coat, so instead of putting on two coats like I did prior, I had to put on 4 coats.

It easily scratched off too during installation, so I had to touch it up. I probably should have put on additional coats, but it’s good enough for now.

We used 3 of these to paint the fire box of our brick fireplace. The paint is thinner than latex paint, but it was easy to apply with a small 3/8” nap paint roller. I used a 1” brush for the tight spots and crevices.

The flat paint looks really nice.

I have been using 1 Shot paint for over 20 years and always got it through my local auto paint shop. Lately it has been hard for them to get-there are new people working there so it may be due to inexperience.

Very impressed with this company. I handpaint pinstripes, signs and lettering and I have almost every 1 Shot color. Ehwn I don’t have the color I can almost figure that I can get it here and have it quickly.

I found that many stores that formerly carried this product nolonger carry it. I was happily surprised that Dick Block not only carried it but the price point is terrific. I love the quality of this paint.

Nothing beats the one stroke creamy coverage. The color saturation is fantastic! I’m beyond pleased with the continued quality of this paint. Once dried the surface is very smooth and durable. I have displays painted with this product that were painted over twenty years ago that look like they were painted yesterday.

You do need to work in a very well ventilated area. The smell is very strong but a small price to pay for the beautiful results!!!.

As near to perfect opaque non-streaky coverage as you can get, in a good enough range of colors. It’s the classic for a reason, nothing else quite like it. Extremely glossy (as it should be), but there are additives to make it matte it if needed.

The consistency is for pinstripe and sign making applications but even those one might need the “reducer” One-Shot makes to get the brush to flow. For covering large areas it is a little sticky, though it does work undiluted.

I may try the product that thins it out and see if I can make it spread a little easier without losing any opacity. Since it is so glossy it is great as a contrast element when the rest of an art piece is very matte.

As it is oil based and very opaque it can be layered over just about anything for multi media works. The only downside is cleanup since it is oil based. Not crazy about using solvents so I use either Gamsol odorless mineral spirits or an “orange oil” type product for clean up, or use disposable brushes.

I am writing this review to be entered in #sweepstakes contest. However, I want to say Testors is always my go to paint for 56 years. Great quality and the price is very low. In this age of covid and closing hobby stores, I can always be sure Blick will have me covered.

I typically buy this item because it usually covers in one coat; depending on the surface you are painting. Rather than three or four coats of acrylic paint, only one coat of this usually does the trick.

The colors are great as well!.

I prepped and sanded degreased and cleaned the surface of an old refrigerator like I have many times before. Thought this paint would give a beautiful high gloss finish. All this paint did was peel up crinkle up and orange peel.

Had to re- prep the refrigerator. Bought a $2 can of fast dry gloss white no name brand Spray paint and what a beautiful finish the paint made. you get what you pay for.

I love the Rust-oleum brands of assorted paints! The brand has copy cats but for all of our outdoor painting needs we always stick with the brand that works much better than the rest. There are cheaper alternatives but none that will work as well and cover as evenly.

If you have things outside that are metal and exposed to the elements, Rust-oleum can protect them from rust and corrosion. I use the products on any and everything that we store outside. From wheelbarrows, to lawn furniture anyone can easily apply and get great results.

I have tried the paint and spray in a can and always have had great results. I like that it only needs to be done once and the metals are protected fully from rain water and snow. We dont have a lot of storage available so we always try to give our metals a coating so they last a long time even if they are left outside without cover.

We also painted our ladder racks on our work truck and some metal on our mud jeeps and its been years since they were treated with Rust-oleum and they are still holding up great. No rust has come through and they still look like they are freshly painted.

If you go to any hardware store its almost guaranteed that you will see a store brand with a claim that the product is comparable to Rust-oleum and I reccomend skipping the other brands and paying a little extra for the real deal.

I tried the store brands in the past and it never did work as well. I highly reccomend people use this if they have metals outside exposed to the elements and Im sure nobody will be dissapointed with the results they get.

It is a bit more expensive then other brands that promise the same results but I know for sure its worth spending the few dollars more to get the better product. A little goes a long way and you dont need to be a professional painter to use it.

Its easy to apply and will last for a very long time. Its highly available in hardware stores and home improvement stores. It is somewhat expensive but worth the cost.

We needed to update mom’s dishwasher to look like stainless steel prior to selling her home and this product worked great. Other product reviews weren’t as good as the results customers found for this specific item and they were correct.

This really looks like stainless steel (matched the new fridge and stove) but take care to use the product correctly and you’ll love the results. Make sure you buy this specific item because others we found were not rated as highly as this one if you are looking to match or want the look of a stainless steel appliance.

Why it is practicly impossible to find Testor enamel paint in tiny glass jar at my Michaels store ? Since long time ago ,the shelves are practicly empty ? So, Do i have to purchase my testor paint on ebay now ? My michael store is the one at 110 boul omer-marcil in st-jean-sur-richelieu Qc J2W-2X2.

I restore vintage enameled jewelry. I would like to see a true pink and army green in gloss. I don’t trust my mixing skills, which are zero. I also agree that each purchased bottle seems old from being around a long time on the shelf.

Perhaps you should add an expiration date to your paint line. Currently, I stir mine with a toothpick, as shaking doesn’t mix it. Consider putting a metal bead in there to mix it better? Otherwise, very happy with results.

I put a clear coat over painted areas to ensure longevity.

The shipping cost more than twice the price of the product that is my only negative. But I used it on a guitar body that was chipped. I had to buy white Testors paint to lighten the blue I bought here.

It was surprising how much I had to mix to get a close match. But Testors is a product I have used for about 60 years. we are old friends. The guitar looks really nice now.

This color is perfect to paint any Easter Decoration and make it look like the best dark chocolate pc ever. Looks so good you swear it’s real chocolate. Applies easy dries fast.

1-Shot Lettering Enamel is the tried and true paint of the former Sign Painting Industry, which is almost defunct due to the rise of computers. I am still painting signs for businesses and other uses; it is my livelihood.

I appreciate TCP Global for stocking as many colors as possible, and preferably in quarts. I will not use any other brand or type of paint for professional reasons.

First time using this line of paint because one of my customers insisted on buying the paint. Doesn’t cover well, doesn’t apply well. its ok on a roller but brushing it sucks even with the best brushes on the planet.

The eggshell is worse than the flat. I personally don’t care for it at all.

The paint was excellent. There was a plastic lid on the can of paint when I opened up the delivery box. I could not remove it. A local paint dealer removed the lid for me.

Looks great on my square steel tubing handrail. But as we all know it’s all in the preparation, so I wire brushed, cleaned with mineral spirits, and primed with Rust-Oleum Primer before the color coat.

The color will fade some over the years but it is not going to peel or flake. This is the finest paint of it’s kind on the market today. I have used this product for years and the quality is unsurpassed.

It’s worth the extra money because it will last; you get what you pay for – – “buy cheap and that is exactly what you’ll get” said a wise man.

Paint was a bit thick upon arrival. I added in some Acetone, stirred and after coming back the next morning, it was perfect. I re-did this bench that my deceased husband and I had made (hardware was from an original horse buggy, dated 100 years older), 15 years ago.

This paint, in particular, served a vital purpose as it was applied to the metal hardware. Now, it’ll last forever! It was hard to find, especially out here in California, due to environmental regulations.

This color is amazing! I ordered it online, couldn’t find it anywhere local! The price was about double what a normal quart is ($22)! It was delivered UPS and the box was crushed at one end! Naturally it was the end the paint was in the elongated box, with airbag packing in the other end! I opened it in front of the UPS lady and it only had minimal leakage with a small amount of paint! The shipper had placed 4 spring clips on the lid to prevent opening! Otherwise the lid would have came conpletely off! The can was slightly dented! So I deceided to keep it anyway! The color is very bright and pleasing! The UPS Lady commented on that is a very nice color, it really pops! I planned to use this on a handicap curb and sign posts! Most blue paint they use for handicap is dull and boring! Now seeing the great color, I plan on useing this on the top endge color for my jon boat about 8″, then 1″ White, then Gray to the bottom! I have been searching for a color for the boat for sometime and this is it! This is very nice paint & color except for the higher price!.

Every machine in the shop that needs painting or restoring winds up with a coat of Rust-Oleum Machine Tool Grey because the Blue / Grey hides dirt & grease well, is tough, & cleans up easily. Thins & sprays well using mid rate evaporating common paint thinner.

I have restored old cars as a hobby for 40 years. Ive used all the rust prevention products, corroless, por 15, red oxide, acid, vinegar, etc. probably the best encapsulation I found before was corroless but, Eastwood doesnt sell it anymore.

I started using epoxy mastic and boy am I happy with it. The thing about epoxy mastic that you have to remember is that it doesnt dry, it cures. Also, unless you want to wear a breather, dont spray it, brush it on.

I have found the best results with a little more than 50% activator mixed with the tint.

With a one to one mixture, it’s easy to mix. Application by roller is not so good for uniformity but I put this on a new, properly prepared concrete surface and it’s holding up extremely well.
