20 Best Double Din Head Unit For Sound Quality (2023 Updated)

This is just about the best purchase I feel that a car owner could make. especially if they are upgrading from their factory in-dash CD player. This deck is loaded with features and has plenty of power for most people.

The radio reception is great. the CD player sounds incredible. and the Bluetooth and all wireless features work just fine. If I have one minor quibble to make it would be that the panel display just isn’t very bright and it’s very hard to read in the daytime in your car.

Even with the brightness all the way up you can’t read the radio station, CD track, or even the clock. I’ve seen the same problem listed in other reviews and it would be nice if JVC would fix that issue.

That minor quibble aside, I can’t imagine anyone not being happy with this deck. It works just great and is a tremendous value.

At 66 years old my audiophile days are over. When the factory deck in my Ram truck bit the dust I was looking for a reasonably priced unit that was functional and simply did what I needed it to do. Play music, have a reliable Bluetooth function and (extremely important) something that I could see and understand while driving.

I did not need a bunch of bells and whistles and after searching I decided on the JVC. I am extremely glad I did. Everything works perfectly, the display is obviously large and easy to read. The sound is very good, the Bluetooth is great and works every time.

I am an outside sales rep and I’m on my phone alot while traveling, I wish I had done this a long time ago. It was easy enough to set up and after two or three months I couldn’t be more satisfied. When I bought mine Best Buy had free installation and the tech was excellent, every thing went smoothly and as promised.

Only one problem and it was totally my fault. I often prefer cd’s instead of fooling with music on my phone or Pandaora or whatever. I bought this on Best Buy’s website and when I did I bought the receiver with no c.

d. player. They look identical (except for the cd slot) and I just clicked the wrong thing, not realizing it until after it was installed I know, stupid and careless. I like this unit so much I may rebuy it with the cd and install it myself since it’s already got the hardware, not sure.

Regardless this is an excellent , dependable product at a great price, very satisfied but wish I had the cd player.

This fit well in my 05 Colorado. Easy to install. Way better than I thought it would be. Music sounds great. With usb your music is limitless. I hooked up rear camera in my truck. Stereo works well with camera.

Pros- when off, looks amazing Decent picture in not so bright areas Rear view camera hook up Easy to use interface Bluetooth actually works with all phones but it’s tricky Can upload all contacts from phone to stereo Cons- Avoid trying to watch the screen when it’s bright out, the glare is terrible.

Absolutely no picture DVD sound is extremely low. Overall sound is terrible out this system. It distorts at a low volume and I have Kenwood speakers The system puts out more bass than it can handle clear Speakers lines stop working in different settings after 3 months.

Tricky to get music playing from phone. Sometimes automatic / other times you have to start it from phone. Microphone hook up is terrible. People can not hear you clearly. They say it’s too much static in the microphone Overall, I’ll say avoid unless you can get this for $50 bucks.

If so, buy then resell!.

For ~$150, this was the best touch screen car stereo on the market. I strongly recommend it. I carefully looked at about 10 other options ranging from $100 – $200. Some touch screen, some not. It shipped free and fast and was here within a week.

Installation was not hard (I had a friend install it and we had no issues). Pros: * Sound is great * Phone mic is crisp and clear for bluetooth calling. * USB and 3. 5 Aux works for most devices. * Controls are mostly intuitive and simple * Lots of color schemes and orange matched my lighting well.

* Graphic equalizer has many options and can be customized. Cons: * Volume icon hidden when pressing volume button No opinion: I did not install a backup camera or spend the $50 for a kit for steering wheel controls.

But this has ports for those.

Excellent stereo! I really love the fact that I can do hands-free calling! I wish the volume was a little bit louder when it comes to voice calling, Only because I’m a little hard of hearing… The power and sound is amazing! But I’m pretty sure that this powerful stereo blew one of my speakers, but oh well, they were only stock speakers… Time to upgrade those LOL! I’m so glad that it works with my iPhone! It didn’t mention that it works with an iPhone 11, but I took the risk anyway and it works! They might want to add iPhone 11 to the description LOL!.

This is a great stereo, I was skeptical about it working with my new iPhone XR, but it works great! Just make sure you get the correct wiring harness specific to your vehicle! This stereo has improved my entire sound system in my Dodge Charger 2006 r/t.

The equalizer options are nearly limitless!!! Totally recommend!.

The product is good so far, But my review will focus more on the service and initial ordering of the products for the two cars that I had radios installed in. 2016 Honda HRV install for radio: When we went to order the parts, we were asked lots of questions, about the what radio and camera we wanted and they told us all the extra parts that we would need based on the model/make of the car.

We don’t know anything about radio installs, so we agreed to paying extra for the parts we needed. However, the day of the install, we got a call about all the additional parts that we would need, including a different radio ($300) that would allow the rear camera and side mirror camera to work with the unit.

We also paid extra for a new controller ($$) that would allow the steering wheel controls to work with the radio. Oh and by the way, we don’t have those items, so we will have to reschedule your appointment.

VERY FRUSTRATING! Best Buy should know what parts are needed based off of the car they are installing in. Customers SHOULD NOT have to get a call and pay extra for items that Best Buy did not think about when pricing the install.

So far on this car, the radio seems to work fine. 2012 Honda Civic radio and back-up camera install: This car install was pretty much the same. With increased cost on parts that they did not originally quote us on.

The other disappointing thing about this install, is that the tech installed the usb connector in the glove box instead of where the original usb connector is in the middle console. UGH!! In addition, the rear camera has a feature that has lines that show up that aid in parking the vehicle.

However, the feature was turned off, because they said that it’s too hard to get the camera lined up to get it to work. Why would you sell/install a product that you can’t install correctly??? Lastly, we noticed that a microphone was installed on the steering wheel console for the phone??? Why was that not placed near the rear view mirror where it cannot be broken or where it would be less intrusive? BTW the mic for the HRV was placed in the right location.

In short, very disappointed in the install.

I had a tape deck. I had a smart phone without an earphone jack. I have no tapes. (“Abba’s greatest hits”- which was under the back seat for 17+ years didn’t count) I had no access from my phone to tape deck.

I could see highways on my phone, but not on the tape deck. My wife’s car stereo does everything I wanted my car to do. Bluetooth envy is a hard thing in the 21st century. I chose this model because it could do what I wanted, but not come with a car payment.

Back in the day, Kenwood, JVC, Alpine, etc. , were at the top of the pile. Supply chain issues (I was told) meant the installer had to try 3 different units before finding one that would fire up. Anyway, it makes the dash of my Pontiac Montana look like there is something not quite right, but.

Trying to compete with the new tech in new cars is hard, and this is a good attempt.

I wish I had left the stock radio in. This unit has been a big disappointment so far. Right off the bat the steering wheel controls would only work intermittently, then not at all. This, after spending $100 for the gadget that would ensure the steering controls would work.

Brought it back and the tech “reset” something then all was fine. sort of. Android Auto is unusable as it freezes the head unit either after connecting for a minute or maybe after 30 minutes. The only way to fix it is to park, turn off the car then turn it back on.

A total pain and there is no fix in site from Google. Different usb cables have been tried, caches emptied and updates performed. AA is unusable in its present condition most days (some days it works great).

I pretty much wasted hundreds of dollars for something that only works sometimes. Not BB’s or Kenwood’s fault, I think this is totally on Google putting out a garbage app. The internet is full of this same problem from lots of other users.

I should have just left well enough alone. As for the unit itself, it’s complicated to use, some icons overlap each other and the touchscreen buttons on the left side are small and impossible to read.

Installed in 2003 Ford Excursion. Very pleased thus far (1 month of Bluetooth use so far). Sound is good, my phone calls nor music ever cut out – connects easily and quickly to my phone every time I hop in.

The touchscreen is bright and works well. If I would have known how affordable a new audio / video system was before hand then I would have purchased this when I got my ole Excursion. Also purchased a finish trim and power connection from American International – so $98 total for the system.

Then a $75 install because I am too lazy to do it myself. For $173 total – I couldn’t be happier. Thanks for the solid unit! FYI on comparisons, my local shop that installed it had units I could have bought too.

I am sure they are a little nicer. but they started at $500 (!) and up. I paid $85 for this unit. what a steal.

I thought this was a decent purchase several years ago. Now, no response from the touchscreen. I will purchase another Planet Audio radio ever again

The stereo in my car when I bought it was missing its face plate. Since I had no idea if it worked, I decided to buy a new one rather than spend on a face plate for a stereo that might not even work.

This one had everything I wanted at a price that I could afford. It sounds great! I have trouble hearing the lower registers and the bass is plenty loud enough for me to hear it well. It’s easy to use (once I got used to it), easy to pair to my Bluetooth and gives a lot of bang for the buck.

I haven’t tried all of the features, yet. I’m looking forward to playing with it more! If I had to be picky, when the sun’s shining in the car, the display is a little hard to read. That having been said, I don’t need to be reading it when I’m driving, anyway.

Over all, it’s a great unit at a good price. It’s great to have tunes in my car again!.

OK, planning simple because when it comes to car stereos everybody’s different, everybody likes this or they like that or this one’s nicer, looking or blah blah blah ,,,, so to be completely honest, this is very nice stereo.

It’s really cool because it has a nap that you can hook up to your phone and you can literally control it from the phone. It allows you to really get in there and set your levels to whatever you want do your whole custom EQ you can set the speakers at whatever volume or base or trouble level that you like and it’s pretty simple to use to be honest.

Is it worth the money? Yes definitely are you getting a quality product? Yeah, you are just remember to get the warranty that extra Greek squad protection and me personally, I’ve always liked pioneers.

This radio sounds great and connects to Bluetooth with no problem. The only problem for me is that it doesn’t play my iPod classic when it’s connected thru USB. It will charge my iPod but won’t play any music.

I took my iPod to the installer at Best Buy n the Geek squad to see if I was doing something wrong. The iPod still wouldn’t play. We tried hooking the iPod classic to several other pioneers that was on display but either would play my iPod.

I am returning it and going with an Alpine from another store.

This is incredibly easy to operate, has excellent source selection options with amazing sound control flexibility (including ALL of Loudness, Bass Boost and even Range options, while the Equalizer can be also be tailored for each input).

I really like the capability to still use CDs/DVDs but really love the upfront USB input. The Aux jack is in the rear, but I simply added an extension cable to get Aux upfront. Audio is flawless and clear, zero-distortion I could find.

I would highly recommend this (and discount any other’s negative comments I’ve seen regarding the display interface). Perfect.

This unit is amazing for it’s price everything is clean and sleek looking. There are a lot of apps that come preinstalled, iHeartRadio, Spotify, Pandora, etc. It also has a lot of great features such as an easy to adjust EQ with several features within it.

I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a reasonably priced unit with great quality.

decent for the price. some of the described features ARE NOT accurate, as in it does not have a rear usb, it does not have a 8 gig card reader slot and it is very picky on what video files it will play it says it will play right on the box that it will play mpeg-1 and mpeg-2 but so far only original dvds will work with it.

all and all the interface for me was messy and a little confusing even after going over the manual a few times.

I love everything about except for one thing only. It might sound dumb but it annoys me. It’s the reason I got rid of my old dual head unit I used to have a long time ago. I do not like that the buttons are blue.

Every back light In my car is red except for my dual head unit. I had a pioneer that you could change the button color to anything you want which is the reason I got the pioneer one in the first place.

Surprisingly though the dual sounds better than the pioneer. If the radio backlights were either red or could be changed to red it would be perfect.

biggest pro is the quality turn knob for volume, but I’d rather use the remote or steering wheel anyway. can’t change word color, only blue. remote is very cheap and preforms poorly. if you are adjusting volume you can’t do so easily with remote it constantly hangs between adjustments.

stereo channels can’t seem to search with a long press like most. it does a scan and you have to go thru one by one and add them to presets. it also gets way more channels than previous unit. is it he radio? idk.

doesn’t play video from usb or microsd. there is a way to make it work with the A/V input and mirroring your phone, but it’s tons of work. instructions could be more thorough especially with the reverse camera.

was not able to get that to wotk still. these should be plug and play annoying. the screen is pretty big because how much of a border it has. seems to push kicker DS speakers ok. not any worse than most average stereos.

overall the screen is slow to respond, have to push pretty firmly. or I end up tapping twice. annoying.

Works well for the price I paid, it has some issues Turing on tho I have to continue to pull the fuse to turn it on since it doesn’t come on with the car. I’ve had this same issue it different cars so I know it’s something about the stereo itself.

It goes in and out a lot as well.

Does not do what is says it will do. The ad clearly states this will “retain steering wheel controls and onstarâ€. It does not. The stereo itself is nice but the installation kit/witing harness foes not include the additional modules needed for these functions.

I had to go out and spend another $40 just for the steering wheel controls to work. Also, the wiring harness they sent would need to be repinned in order to line up with my vehicles factory wiring. (The listing clearly shows my year/make and model vehicle in thei compatibility list.

I will be contacting the seller for reimbursement. Beware of these issues if you decide to buy.

I bought this stereo a couple months ago for my 2012 F150 and its been a pretty good unit so far. Sound is good! Hooked up 2 polk audio amps and 2 polk audio 8” subs off it and its puts out some good sound and bass.

My only issue is it takes abit for the bluetooth to connect to my iphone for music playback, other then that I’m pretty happy with it.

I installed in a 1st gen Sequoia easily. The system works flawless. I had just bought a Blaupunkt of the same model year but it was junk compared. This one does everything you want a head unit in 2020 to do.

Apps, HD radio, CD, DVD, USB, Aux, Bluetooth. The power off is hidden (2 steps to get there) but works easily and has somewhat modifiable buttons (not power).

Got this unit at a discount and it was brand new in the box. Sounds good in my 1990 4runner. Bluetooth handsfree for phone is great. That is the main reason I bought it. New law in affect.

This unit has a lot to offer at a reasonable price, I am very happy with the unit overall and JVC is a reliable well known brand. It offers a lot of bang for your buck, I would highly recommend.

I just had to dremel out about 1/8 in. around the border to fit flush.

I was able to stuff this head unit into my 99 GMC suburban to replace my 1 year old kenwood CD player and update my dash into this decade. I love the bright touch screen that seems unaffected by glare/sunlight.

Excellent radio! Radio was easy to install in my 03 superduty with a slight dash adjustment. The interface is super easy to use as well. I also bought a $20 back up camera and installed at the same time.

Nice features, all bell and whistles , but bad sound quality you will get complete features, but sound quality is much worse than GM factory radio, very disappointed. It should NOT for an upgrade, Kenwood did very bad job in sound quality.

Kenwood ddx396 does not Support Sirius XM tuner I replace the tuner 3 times already and nothing

Has lots of power , connects easily & fast ( android user) the 4 volt pre amp outputs make for super clean sound. It is hard to get the hang of as far as controls but I think its because there is so much packed into the unit.

Touchscreen works very well. Tons of sound quality adjustments. Tons! Very happy & worth every penny.

It is a nice aftermarket radio. It has allot of extra features.

Allways count on pioner quality. Sound quality is good! Hands free works very well. Looks cool and is easy to use. Price is also good for budget minded puyers! Installation may take time if you install this player on ford mondeo mk2 or similar car for factory player replacement.

Favors iPhones over Android phones. My wife has an iPhone 6s and I have a Pixel 3XL. My phone does not connect to the radio when both my phone and wife’s are connected. Only works when only a single phone is connected.

That is my only complaint.

If you are looking for a deck to last for a year it did that. Bluetooth lasted 5 months. Now after 13 months the aux is skipping non stop. Was happy until the radio hit it’s expiry date.

For the price, in my opinion, you cant go wrong with this stereo. Ive had a few others that were a little more expensive and this one beats those by a long shot. The features and exactly what I was looking for.

Had the Kenwood DMX7706S installed in my Shelby GT500 in July 2019. This unit greatly surpasses the quality of sound that I’ve had in my car. The look is flawless and the ease of navigating with CarPlay makes using this unit while on the go a breeze.

I also replaced the old subwoofers with JL Audio 10″, 300 watt subwoofers, but left the other speakers alone. What I love about it is the custom setup. So many options to set the music just as you like it.

The highs are extremely clear and the lows are robust. Highly recommend this unit.

Impressive in every category. Very fast and responsive to the touch. Only complaint is I wish the apple car play feature was wireless. Other than that its great. Installation was a breeze.

I’m older so I’ve had many radio over the years. This is by far the most frustrating one yet. It’s almost to complicated. The basic functionality is easy to use and it looks good. The major flaw is in the sound settings.

They have so many settings it makes for an extremely long setup. I’ve tried so many options and can’t seem to get good quality. I can’t find the bass that I had just a month ago and I hate it. If you like to play at compositions maybe this is for you.

If you want something easy that sounds good, save yourself from this!.

Junk. cannot connect to bluetooth whatsoever. Tried different devices. nothing. Touch the screen (change radio station, change song, etc. ) pretty much massive delay. Definitely not immediate response.

The screen is so dim. this was a huge mistake. Unfortunately cannot return due to being over the 30 day return policy.

Known issue with installation using wire harness with speakers makes this unit Turn itself off and back on (retaining all settings). The brightness for the display is NOT great and if it’s bright outside it can make seeing what station and other information almost impossible (even on the high setting).

The fact that 2 phones can be connected at the same time was nice till it would change who’s phone was streaming music, even after you told it never to use Phone #2 for media. No way to tell it a preferred phone (favorite).

Thus leaving this feature USELESS. Since getting the harness issue “fixed” it has blinked off one time. SiriusXM would work if the radio came with the XM receiver portion to utilize that feature. As such this feature is also USELESS.

I have NOT tried the CD/DVD part of the radio as of this review.

I like this thing. It’s built solid and it sounds. The only thing I can complain about is them not having a micro sd slot or another usb port. I like running a microsd or a usb with all my music on it.

The file system is easy to navigate, blue tooth works great as well. It rembers me and connects automatically when I start the car. I tried a atoto unit and the screen on this unit is way better and you can actually dim it alot which is the main reason I bought this.

The DMX7704S has some issues. The display layer is very reflective and fades out the picture in any direct sunlight. The lag time it takes for the unit to come to life when the vehicle is turned on is to long.

The ‘nag’ screen is SUPER annoying, I understand Kenwwod is C. Y. A. -ing but good god shorten the time to 5 seconds or less. Although this is not Kenwood’s issue, Android Auto is worthless and splash screen on my phone every time I connect it to one of the USB connections sucks too.

I would love to see a ‘mute’ option. The ATT button is great but make it so that when pressed a second time it mutes or put a soft button on the screen. Have the title of the song/video scroll, it is currently cut off if it is too long.

how about having the font size and color changeable. The A. D. A. S. system on the DRV-N520 needs some work. It sounds off all the time even when nothing is in front of the vehicle. This happens with the collision and late departure.

I finally turned it off. The video was grainy on the unit (DMX7704S) but super clear on the laptop. The connections for this unit are: An RCA video output, a three-pin connector to the back of the head unit and three wires, Yellow (Battery), Red (Accessory) and Black (Ground) These issues are not bad enough for me to rip this combo out of my vehicle since I do like what else they have to offer.

I am sure nothing will be done about the issues above but I thought a good rant will inform others before making their decision.

It took a couple frustrating weeks to get Android phone connectivity working the way I expected. The ABT installer and the Kenwood manual were no help. And Kenwood’s Weblink app kept getting in the way of Android Auto whenever I connected the phone to the unit via USB.

Recommendations 1. If you already have Android Auto on your phone, delete and reinstall prior to attempting to connect to this unit 2. Do not install the Kenwood Weblink app on your phone 3. Connect your phone to this unit via Bluetooth FIRST.

Then configure Android Auto and Bluetooth details for your phone on the Kenwood unit. 4. After that’s done you can plug the phone into the unit via USB for charging.

This 7704 has replaced my soundstream head unit with a malfunctioning touchscreen, So there is no comparison in quality. The cheap unit was just that, cheap, and I knew it wouldnt last it only lasted a year before the touchscreen went bad.

You do get what you pay for. Ive been a Kenwood fan since I was a boy and this one is impressive! All I care about is Bluetooth, HD radio, and backup camera. This 7704 does those thing very well. Resistive or capacitive touchscreen? I would prefer the capacitive, but the price jumps way up.

I bought it at $350. And I still think I got a good deal.
