Best Deadbolt Mystery Society Box (2023 Updated)

I needed to either re-key or replace my six exterior locksets (25 years old) after moving to my new home. Fortunately, the doors were still in good shape and all access holes were present. I chose to go with these items in lifetime bright brass finish.

Schlage has evolved their design to work well and be simple and straightforward to install. Compared to the old locksets which generally disintegrated into a number of small pieces parts when disassembled, these Schlage remained in three stable puzzle pieces that fit neatly together while I assembled them.

The finish is holding up well. The lever action allows me to open the latch with an armload of groceries vs the old knob style.

This deadbolt appears to be of good quality, and has a reassuring feel when operated. It was easy to rekey using pins and tools for Schlage locks, and was easy to install. An optional lock plate reinforcement is included with the lock, and my impression is that using it makes the locked door very difficult to kick open.

A friend who picks locks as a hobby. tells me that Schlage locks are a challenge to pick because they use multiple spool pins. Instructions for changing the length of the bolt assembly to suit the door preparation are included in the instruction sheet; you just have to look for them.

I plan to revisit this review in a year to comment on how well the black finish is holding up.

New home, new locks. Looking at what is out there, residential grade 1 is the best security you can get. This is a grade 1 lock. As a lock by itself, it is a great lock. The nice thing about Schlage is their warranty.

If it ever breaks, you send them some pictures, and they fix it. Only once did I have to take them up on it, and their service was great. Another nice thing is that you can rekey their locks yourself.

Installation was easy. Instructions could have been better. If you use the metal frame provided then you dont have to drill the holes in the door. The instructions dont tell you how to install the lock in this way.

If you mock up (put the lock together before installing) you will figure it out. If you want the lock to it’s fullest strength drill the holes. The other issue I have with the lock is that the numbers that you put in can open the lock in any combination.

With a 4 digit combination it can be inputted in 29 different ways. Such as input 1234 and you can open the lock with 4321,1324, 3124, ect. I had a little trouble with how to make the lock work on a left and right sided door.

It’s a pin that you have to adjust. The lock is built solid and being mechanical it doesnt need batteries and is more reliable. So far working great.

This is a great product. This unit is all mechanical – no batteries. Other battery powered door locks are sort of a hassle since they need battery replacement every now and then and you can get locked out when the battery gets low.

This one is all mechanical so no battery issues. It is a bit fiddly to set up with some teeny weeny parts, but once it is set up and installed, it works really well. We have several of the marine grade units outside for several years now and they show no signs of corrosion or deterioration.

I highly recommend.

I choose and bought this lock because I wanted it in the rental unit so that I am able to change the code when a new tenant comes in. It is also nice not to need a battery and priced right. The back side of this lock is also a turn toggle like the front which there is no image on the website.

Since I had intended to install them on patio doors with glass panels around this lock, it is less than ideal. Thiefs can easily break one of the panes and stick their hand in to turn the toggle to unlock doors.

The website also states that it does not require drilling, but it DOES!! you need to drill one hole on the top to stabilize the vertical lock panel. You can see the small hole on the top rubber piece.

I prefer Schlage locks and handlesets. Recently discovered I can order them from Build keyed to my liking, which is great. For this recent order, one of the reasons I chose this lock was for its Grade 1 features.

Unfortunately, the deadbolt I received lacks the “Snap & Stay Design,” as described in the text. I also expected the “Anti-Pick Shield” that is found on single-cylinder deadbolts, but I see this shield is not included in the product description.

Still a good lock, but I was a little disappointed. I talked up the Schlage name and quality up to my customer, even showing them the anti-pick shield on a different deadbolt I had on hand. This is definitely a B62 series deadbolt, but not Schlage’s current design.

I did not buy from home essentials direct but I installed Schlage entry knobs and deadbolts on all my exterior doors some years back. The doors had a locking knob but no deadbolt. I replaced the old stuff with a knob/deadbolt sets all keyed alike so I had to cut new holes for the deadbolts in two doors.

Scary? Yeah, but the included template was spot-on with getting all the holes in the right places. My regret is that I placed the locks at 4″ centers rather than 5-1/2″, and I really don’t remember if the templates allowed for this adjustment.

Careful measuring would have had I thought about it at the time. Overall, I am totally satisfied with my Schlage lock sets. My next upgrade is to install the double hole strike plate in the jamb with the long screws to strengthen the security.

I ordered the double bolt cylinder deadbolt and I hired a man to install it. He tried and tried, but, the screws were a little bit off and wouldn’t let the two sides line up. No, he didn’t strip them.

I bought Schlage because I always wanted the best quality for my money, but, I’m doubting their quality control and design. When Build. com was gracious and replaced it, he still had some trouble with the screws and thought it might not work either.

But, after a long time of working with it, it finally came together. I will think twice before I order another Schlage product. I bought a Schlage front door handle, deadbolt and interior lever door handle.

I had to call Build. com and tell them within a month or two, the deadbolt had loosened and could not be tightened. They sent me a new one that works. I have no problem with Build. com and their customer service.

Nice, simple design and good quality. It was an easy install for a woman with no deadbolt lock experience. I had an old Arrow double keyed deadbolt with no keys. You can’t access to remove screws without the key to turn the lock & plate which exposes the screws.

I ended up using a pair of wire cutters to cut through the outer cap on the inside of the door that has the screws. Once I could peel the metal back, the screw plate fell out and I could pull the screws.

Took just a few minutes in all. Was not paying a locksmith to remove what I wanted to throw away. I just wanted a simple thumb operated deadbolt and this one is perfect, good size for easy operation.

I would have preferred antique copper but this is fine.

Exactly what we needed. Matches other nickel hardware. And, as pictured, the screws we received actually match the nickel of the lock. (I was concerned the screws would be chrome, as pictured in the product image.

) It a bit of a pain to install; we had to change the length of the lock and the instructions weren’t as intuitive as you might like, but managed to eventually figure it out.

What is aggravating here is that I was replacing this locking mechanism simply because of color— currently Chrome, my honey wanted Bronze. The box looked like it was a new item. So started to install same with everything going along okay until I looked for them long bronze screws to go from the turn knob through to the front plate but missing, missing , missing.

The same with the key way throw going from knob to the locking mechanism which engages the throw bolt but also missing! I am not a happy home handyman who expected to complete this project in minutes.

PLEASE respond PROMPTLY with either sending a new Unit with all parts Or the TWO missing parts. This is annoying.

Fit and finish is quite good. Product comes with everything to fit both standard and wide doors. Read instructions carefully to make sure to set code sequence correctly. After you do it once, it becomes easy to reprogram next time around.

Best thing about product is no batteries required.

This is a great lock. My locksmith commented on how well made it is and how he never has problems with these locks- unlike some other battery operated ones. I have purchased three of them, had them outside in the elements and never have a problem.

Looks and fit perfect. This lock was put on a 1946 door which has been converted to a bathroom door in our remodel of a 1946 house. We had to cover where the dead bolt was and this was the perfect solution.

This is great. I only knock it a star because on the inside it doesn’t have any sort of indication of whether it is locked or not. You just have to remember that you turned the lever (as opposed to, say, an arrow indicating when it is locked on the inside).

Love the quality of this product, and it sure makes it easier to tell if the restroom is occupied before you try the door. Quality is very good, installation is as easy as any other deadbolt. Item arrived before promised, complete and ready to go.

Took about an hour to install. If you are installing on a door with a metal jamb that doesn’t already have a hole for a deadbolt in the right spot, order a “thimble” for the jamb to dress it up. I ordered mine from my door supplier.

This is the third of this product I purchased for my home. I had one on my front and back door. Now that I have my tools in my garage, I put one there also. My son has a habit of losing keys so this is the perfect solution.

If there is ever a compromise you can always change the combination rather having to buy another lock. It is a quality product and you have easy access to the battery if it requires a change. You also have a key that can be used if your battery would go out and you had no other access to get in.

I am very pleased with my purchase. It is a high quality item and has a nice appearance. You can also use it’s illumination at night by pressing the keys.

Most keyless entry locks use the battery to activate (slide) the deadbolt. This one uses the battery to engage/disengage the smaller interior mechanism; you slide the deadbolt on this one. Guess which type battery lasts the longest: Surprise, the one that does the LEAST amount of mechanical work.

Most keyless entry locks run out of battery in about 3 months. This one last for two years. Thats a 8x difference. Don’t use the standard keyless deadbolt. Waste of time installing batteries and irritating since you have to bring your keys as a backup making them you not very “keyless”.

On the other hand, I never bring my keys so I am keyless. I change the single 9V battery every 22 months. Only use this type of keyless entry. Check for the rotating handle. The single negative aspect of this “semi-automatic” is the lack of designs.

Its either this one from the era of King Arthur or a slick modern one. This one is the closest match to the century old architecture “look” of North America houses. Good job architects keeping up with the times.

All keyless should go this way.

I ordered the Surprise 4th Edition package. 3 exclusive styles valued at 100. 00 for 19. 97. I was so excited waiting to receive my bracelets because the bracelets on the website looked so pretty. I just got my order.

Very disappointed. There is nothing exclusive about these styles. 3 bracelets were all the same just different beads. Nothing special. 1 was gold beads, 1 was white with gold and clear beads and 1 white all white with a few clear beads.

Definitely not a 100. 00 value. Would not order from a mystery sale.

I’ve become a huge fan of Baldwin door hardware since becoming familiar with the company and its products nearly 20 years ago. The very first lockset I purchased still functions perfectly and looks just as good as it did when I initially installed it! 3 years ago I remodeled a condominium that had builder grade (cheap) polished brass door hardware throughout.

The previous owner maintained the hardware, so it all functioned perfectly. The polished brass was nice and shiny, but I’ve never been a fan of that look. After a couple of hours of searching through hundreds of products available on build.

com, I discovered the Baldwin Prestige Collection and shortly thereafter I saw the satin nickel Spyglass door hardware. My initial thought was that it looked great online, but I figured it would disappoint once actually seeing it up close because it wasn’t priced ridiculously high.

I am thrilled to report that it looked even better in real life than it did online and it felt quite substantial. Fast forward 3 years and it still looks brand new and mechanically functions perfectly! I wholeheartedly recommend the Prestige Collection from Baldwin, and I can’t say enough good things about the Spyglass locksets.

I took the time to write this review because hardly any product reviews have been written about this fantastic line of products, which is unfortunate. Full disclosure: I paid full price for my purchases and I received no incentives for choosing these products or writing this review.

I’m just a normal consumer wanting to share my satisfaction with these great products. One other thing–I was a little bit concerned that the square Spyglass locksets might not look right if they were installed on doors that previously had more traditional, round locksets.

Again, I was very pleasantly surprised. Indoor and outdoor Spyglass locksets and deadbolts occupy more area on the door than the previous round hardware, so you can’t see a single trace of the old hardware.

This Baldwin 93800-013 Spyglass Single Cylinder Square Deadbolt for Front Door and Garage Door looks sharp & sleek but lacks the weight and precision of older Baldwin door hardware. I have been a huge fan of Baldwin since it offers durability and high quality locking mechanisms and door hardware.

I am guessing This Spyglass deadbolt is Baldwin’s economy line due to the retail pricing. I needed a new doorknob and deadbolt for the door that leads from my garage into my house and was happy to find a Baldwin brand with a sleek look.

This lock hasn’t been used on a daily basis since we enter the house via the front door, but it has held up well and if I should encounter issues, I can always enter via the front door security keypad.

This lock feels sturdy and appears to be very well constructed with well fitted parts. It features a lot of cast metal parts where cheaper units have a lot of stamped metal parts. The difference is very noticeable.

Installation is a bit more complicated than what is typical of cheap locks, so I recommending reading the instructions. The square shape adds one issue in that if the fitting is miss-aligned in relation to the edge of the door even a little bit it is noticeable.

I held a 12 inch ruler along the side so that it was easier to align the base with the edge of the door. That worked well. It is really easy to use their Smart Key system. Once you understand the process, it takes seconds to re-key these units.

I suggest that you keep the old keys so if you want to re-key for some reason you can do so. Overall I am very impressed with this item.

This was an easy install and looks great. The only thing I don’t like is the strike plate but that is probably unique to my house. The strike plate is a heavy duty plate with 4 screws which would be ok in most cases.

Our house was built with a piece of heavy galvanized metal in the locking area of the door jamb predrilled for a 2 hole strike plate. This provides extra security for the deadbolt. In order to use the Kwikset strike plate I had to drill 4 new holes through the galvanized sometimes along the extreme edge (caused drill to slip, etc).

In 2 out of three cases I just used the original 2 hole strike plate which lined up with the galvanized holes. The galvanized backing provides plenty of locking strength that the Kwikset strike plate would have provided otherwise.

My 10 year old Kwikset lock decided it didn’t want to accept my key anymore one day. I looked on Home Essentials Direct here and found this one. I didn’t want to replace the whole thing since my old one is fancier and has the handle, too, so I used the barrel of this one and put it into the old outer piece.

I changed out the part that goes on the door, too. It took 6 screws and literally 10 minutes for this non-handy first timer. Apparently a locksmith would have charged $150 to do the same thing. If you have a screwdriver, you can do this! There are also videos on Youtube that show you how step by step.

I’m grateful to have saved $135 and to know how to change a lock if I ever need to again!.

This may not be the strongest dead bolt available, but it will outlast the door frame and the door should someone decide to kick in the door. The self keying feature helps immensely when trying to single key the garage man door, the back door and the front door.

Unless you are a bank or Fort Knox, this is all that is required to protect your house and the bad guys will break and come in through a window as it is much easier and usually quieter.

I purchased this lock when I still have not even bought my house yet, because I knew I wanted a lock that I did not need a key for, had it stored for a year till I got the house, I’ve installed it then and so far, it has served me greatly, it has not rust, scratched or lost function, still working great, then again, it is under my front porch and not really much exposed to the elements, I just love it.

“BUT” I have to admit that it was not very easy to get the combination changed, the directions do not explain very clear how to do it, so I went to YouTube and found a video that explains it, and that’s how I managed.

Anyways, I recommend it and I am looking to buy a second one for my side door!.

The latch mechanism for one knob barely lasted over one month. Yesterday I woke up and could not open my door because the latch would not unlock. I am attempted to return it, but three away packaging, since I’ve never had a door knob latch that ever failed in 30 years of putting them in.

This was a potential fire safety issue and I had to in good conscience post about this issue because this may happen again for others.

The only, and i mean only, problem is the key is pretty bulky, but you won’t lose it so often like that

I only installed this at my customer’s insistence. If a key is not returned by a former employee or is lost, it cannot be rekeyed to a new key, rendering it insecure. Changing the combo requires removal, partly dismantling, using tweezers (supplied) while holding a spring loaded part in place.

Not user friendly for that! Handy to operate though.

This is a replacement for my first one which only lasted twenty years!! I will mention this one was double the price and is identical to the original. But i think I can say the same thing about nearly everything i purchased 20 years ago.

This lock is exactly what we needed. It is being used on our carport gate. It has already been through rain and works perfectly.

SnapSafe XX-Large with 1. 26 90Lbs magnets. These magnets are Strong. Here are pictures of magnets mounted in an XX-Large SnapSafe. These were mounted inside a SnapSafe inside the back door of my 2014 RAM Travato G59.

Safe is mounted between the back side of the shower unit and the back door of RV. The clearance is 3 inches so these lock boxes cannot be opened from inside of RV without opening the rear door. I was looking for a way that could meet the standards for carrying a firearm in a trunk, for a vehicle that has no trunk or other outside compartment.

These safes cannot be opened from inside the vehicle without opening the rear door and the door will not shut if the key is left in the slot. So it should meet the requirement that it cannot be accessed from inside vehicle, like a Trunk, and is locked in a box.

A firearm could also have a standard trigger lock as a way to provide a second lock, inside a locked box and not be accessible from inside a vehicle. This should pass “Most” Inter-State Federal regulations for transporting unloaded firearms.

Ammunition can be in a separate SnapSafe. These magnets hold the firearm through the foam padding that comes with the safe. Note: Because I mounted these on a wall; I mounted a piece of wood at the bottom of the lock boxes tokeep them from opening past a level point to form a sort of shelf when boxes are opened.

I wanted to avoid the possibility of anything falling out when opened.

Solid box, strong and safe for its size. Includes cable to attach to solid object. Two keys, strong lock mechanism. I have no fear of access by anyone in the house. Of course, the box is portable and could be stolen intact.

Does not provide the security of a gun safe. Arrived promptly well packed. Price in line with similar boxes.

I bought this case last week to store my pistol in my luggage and it didn’t even make one trip without the lock jamming with the weapon inside. Then, putting pressure on the zinc-mush key to try and open the box, it broke off in the lock …so i drilled out the lock to retrieve my weapon (no biggie).

The reason for this review is because the warranty is bogus. I called Snapcase and instead of asking for receipts and pictures of the case or free return of the defective product, Snapcase Harnedy’s sales and “technical” folk passed me around consistently demanding that the defective product had to be returned, at my expense, to begin to consider replacing it.

Spend a bit more for a better case. The Snapcase I purchased was junk and support was off-putting (poor customer service).

This was a really fun game. Why the three stars then, you ask? Well, on the original Clue game the ending would be different everytime. I can’t figure out how. The ending on this version is going to change.

I really liked the co-op that happens in this one and I loved the puzzle solving. My daughter and I played the game straight through for over an hour and enjoyed ourselves immensely. However, once we were done I couldn’t see a way to have a different ending.

Maybe I’m just missing something. If the game could be played with different endings I would rate this game as five stars.

I didn’t really know what to expect but this game was totally fun! It wasn’t complicated to figure out how to play. It takes you step by step. Understand though, this is a one and done game. I wouldn’t even call it a game.

It’s more like a puzzle to solve and then you can’t play it again because you solved it. But you can pass it on to a friend to play! There are lots of little things to figure out as you solve the mystery at the end.

I’d love to buy more for more game nights in the future. You can actually play this alone or with friends or family. My husband and I played with our 10 year old son and we all were equally engaged. I love that there’s no “winner” either.

We worked as a group. So fun!.

This game is bizarre. Once you figure it out (probably the kids will have already moved on to electronics), you will notice strange things like typos and the board not lining up and random numbering on the cards, but the worst part is that the outcome is always the SAME! Every time you play it, it will always eventually turn over the same clues with the same result.

How stupid! Lol. Who buys a board game to only be able to play it once?? The only nice thing I can say is that the one time you do play it, it is actually kinda fun.

I received my ring mystery box today, and I like the rings I received. There were five, each in its own little dust bag. All of them were special in their own way, all had sparkly stones, and as Melinda promises, none were “boring”! One seems to be a size larger than the size I ordered, but that’s OK because it fits another finger just fine.

Two are color-coordinated and look good stacked. I don’t think any of the ones I received are currently for sale on the site. Only one isn’t my style, but it’s pretty and good quality and will make a nice gift.

This box is a good value for the price, and I love a good surprise. :).

MM nailed it with these mystery ring boxes!!! I have ordered a few mystery boxes in the past but the ring boxes I’m in love with. I mainly wear silver jewelry and was so happy she added the choice to choose silver or gold.

I ordered 2 boxes and was blown away at how amazing they were. All the rings were different and I would absolutely wear everyone. They were so good that I just ordered a 3rd box in a different size. Each box had over 5 rings because I got a stack of 3 in each box that’s counted as 1 ring.

And you could totally wear them separate. Gorgeouse quality rings that last! Obsessed! MM girl for life ❤️.

I was excited to try a mystery box. I ended up with two butterfly rings, different colors… I was hoping for a more subtle styles in the box with possibly one bling ring, instead they we all very flashy pieces.

It would have been nice to receive at least one Heiress ring – these are so classic and could be worn with anything. I will probably only end up wearing one of the five rings. That said- I still love Melinda Marie jewelry, I will probably lean away from mystery boxes and put my money where I truly love the item.
