Best Daw For Recording Guitar (2026 Updated)

I replaced my 2nd generation Scarlett 2i2 with the 3rd generation 4i4. I was a bit skeptical of the software application required to set the inputs to line/instrument, but it turned out to be fairly intuitive.

The unit comes with a pad and air feature. Pad is self explanatory (gain reduction for loud recordings), the air setting is supposed to model some classic microphone preamp or something to that effect.

I’m not totally sure what the difference is, but I’ve left the Air feature on anyways while recording and I’ve been pleased with the results, how much of that satisfaction is a result of the Air setting is hard to say since I haven’t actually done any objective testing but it certainly doesn’t seem to hurt anything by having it on.

Initially, when I got the hardware going on my iMac I experienced significant lag while using Logic at various times, particularly when I was trying to copy logic drum tracks or expand the timeline but also while trying to do basic functions as well.

I was concerned that I would have to get more RAM for my Mac which is problematic because the model I have makes it both difficult and expensive to increase RAM. However, after a few repeated uses the issue seems to have subsided, so I don’t really know what that was about or whether the change in hardware even had anything to do with it, however it definitely was not an issue while I used my 2i2 so it’s something to consider.

I mainly upgraded because I wanted to start using midi with my electronic drum kit and that was basically as easy as plug and play (aside from a couple added steps in Logic which didn’t have anything to do with the 4i4).

However, for some reason the midi tracks seem to cause Logic to experience errors during playback when I close and then reopen a project. Again, can’t say that this is a result of the 4i4 but I’ve been able to resolve the issue by simply quitting Logic entirely before reopening a project which isn’t much of an inconvenience at all.

A great high quality product! Design- I love the sleek and compact design. The red matte metal contrasts well with the glossy black front and back panels. It has more than enough Jack inputs and contains two ports that function as both XLR and Jack inputs- awesome! It has LED’s on the panels which indicate the selected inputs (INST, AIR, PAD) which can be changed via the focusrite interface.

Sound and preformance- Amazing sound quality covering a full range of frequencies! There is also pretty much zero latency so it sounds great and is very much a joy to record with. Handling- For the past couple weeks of use, this audio interface has been very intuitive to use, I’m a novice producer yet I’ve barely had to touch the manual! It also comes with its own interface which allows you to change the inputs and their volumes.

The box has a light around the volume knobs which advises you on the correct volume to have the instrument at (green, orange or red). This interface is also great for troubleshooting when you don’t know whether there’s an issue with the setup or the DAW.

The interface is great. As a first time user there was a bit of a learning curve so a few things I had to find out for myself. First off. If you previously used “ASIO4ALL” for everything, DON’T USE THAT.

use “focusriteASIO” Using ASIO4ALL my recordings were off beat and I had crazy latency. After hours of changing sample rates I found out to just change the setting. I found the direct monitor function to do me no good at all because you can’t adjust the volume of the mic to hear yourself properly when you record.

You can only adjust the gain which then will distort your recording if you turn it up too high. so. useless. Better to just use your DAW. Also I got running noise from my computer going through my monitors from the interface.

Using ground loop isolators degraded the quality of the playback audio. So I found the only options to be deal with it, or pay a crazy amount for a power conditioner. So. I deal. I also didn’t hear much difference in my vocals using the AiR filter.

I have a decent mic, so maybe it helps lower end ones idk. Outside of those things, it works great! No latency, once it’s set up it’s easy to use. It seems solid, and I hear it’s reliable. I hope I can save someone a headache or two.

Thankfully they have changed the rear power input to USBC, which is great news. My last one never got used because the input was broken, it ran a similar cable to a printer. Warranty runs out after one year and I never even got to use it.

It costs the same amount to post out and repair as to buy another new one. Definitely make sure you’re getting USBC. Don’t wrap the cable around when storing and transporting. Unplugging is absolute must.

Take care of your gear. Quality wise, it does the job. If recording directly you will need to have a DAW with VST3I, VST, VST3 files to augment the sound virtually. It basically turns your computer into an amp.

Only for those who wish to record at home and avoid studio costs. Don’t waste your time if you don’t have a computer. Check for Mac compatibility.

This his EQ/DI is the perfect device for my acoustic guitars. I’d originally purchased one for a D35 Martin with a FRAP pickup and it was great for getting the sound zeroed in and zapping pesky feedback.

A very short time later my Fishman Platnum DI/preamp I was using for my Collings D decided to just die. I purchased another LRBaggs and it works really well for the Collings (with LRBaggs pickup system).

It also has a much smaller footprint than the bulky Fishman. One other small thing: The LRBaggs comes with a nice, concise set of very helpful instructions with interesting tips. It’s also powered by Phantom power or battery.

No 9V DC input. I can definitely live without that.

I Love this box! I bought used one here on GC as i needed preamp/DI to plug straight into the board of a singer/guitarist I started playing with. I had read a lot of reviews and watched a lot of videos of all the acoustic preamps available and decided on this one for my Martin GPC-15ME.

The Martin has a built in Fishman preamp, but the LR Baggs allows me to get a strong clear sound without distortion and without having to max the Martin preamp. The Para acoustic can be powered off battery or phantom.

If phantom power is lost, battery automatically kicks in. Unit automatically turns on when jack plugged into input when on battery power. Fits nicely sideways on a pedaltrain Nano+ along with a Harmonist PS-6 and BBE mini sonic stomp with room to spare.

First let me explain that I am a 12 string connoisseur. I own and have owned all the major players. (Guild F512, Martin D12-28 and D12-35, Taylor LKSM, and 655ce, Ovation Adamas I and II models, Ovation Glen Campbell etc.

) I am reviewing this guitar through the lens of accumulated experience playing all of these great guitars. Experience playing this guitar: This guitar has a very stiff top coupled with a heavy neck and neck block.

Add to this the mahogany back and sides, and you have the final ingredient for a naturally compressed guitar. The volume is somewhat low, but the compressed jangle this thing puts out hits the sweet spot.

Since the top IS so stiff, the strings feel very buoyant and springy (almost spongy) which makes playing this thing a blast. The tone is very classic rock 70’s (think Zep’s Over the Hills and Far Away, KISS’ Hard Luck Woman, or Rush’s Closer to the Heart) Single note runs are ok, but heavy strumming and arpeggiating is where it’s at.

Not the best guitar I have ever played, but the best in this price range especially for this kind of tone. This guitar really responds to a thin pick (Dunlop USA Nylon. 38mm is shear heaven on this model) It has a permanent home amongst all of it’s peers as it has a very unique tone and is fun/easy to play.

It looks great too. For the price I would recommend it to anyone. Fit and Finish: Overall very good quality. My only findings are that the tuners despite being labeled as Grover, seem to be cheap knock offs.

They just have a cheap look and are a little rough overall. I will be replacing them soon with mini rotomatics (gold plated) Likewise with the strap button. The spray on the top is very heavy and you can see a little bit of pooling where the fingerboard extension terminates at the sound hole.

Very insignificant, but something you do not see on higher end guitars. I don’t mind the over spraying of the top as it adds to the compression I talked about before.

I was looking for a preamp that would give my guitar and vocals a transparent sound as well as add some color when I needed it. ISA one does that. I have a basement project studio and no one else but me uses it but me (maybe a friend or two).

My point is I’m not in the Music business and I just want to record my stuff. When I cut my teeth in recording I worked in real recording studio with lots of excellent mics, analog outboard gear and 2′ tape.

This was back when digital was thought as noise reduction not the beginning the middle and end of the process. Back to the review, I can’t afford to buy the gear my ears are use to for that matter who can? This Focusrite ISA One is great analog to the gear I was able listen to back in the day and at a price I can afford.

That said the ability to have separate outputs for the DI and mic/line make this preamp a twofer. Well worth the price. Quality in and quality out the ISA is just that.

ESS converters usually have the reputation of sounding thin and lifeless. But these new ES9026PRO’s that are used in 2026 M4 are breathtaking. I would have never imagined they sounded even more clear and crisp than my older interface with cirrus logic CS4398 converter.

I opened my M4 up to check the parts; indeed they use ESS for ADC as well, and it sounds extraordinary. They use very good quality opamps and a superb Burr Brown amplifier (OPA1688) for headphone output.

Though I would have preferred larger coupling capacitors (they only used 22uF), so that will result in a small roll-off in the low frequencies for the ADC, maybe a dB or two below 30Hz, which isn’t really noticeable.

The thing I love about it the most is the fact that its so Linux friendly. Runs on Ubuntu with no drivers needed. All the levels and monitoring and mixing controls are right there on the interface with no need for software headache.

Just fantastic. They really have a winner product here. Compared to the run-of-the-mill Scarletts and other mediocre interfaces on the market, it stands a head and shoulder above, with state-of-the-art digital conversion resulting in extremely low noise and distortion, and some meticulous analog engineering that in my opinion, pushes the limits of budget audio interfaces today.

Highly recommended.

I use the M4 with Cubase and WaveLab on a Win10 PC, (the MOTU ASIO driver was found quickly by my all various software, Steinberg, Izotope, Waves standalone VSTis, and Windows). The DAC and ADC is performed by the ESS Sabre32 Ultra DAC chip, the same chip used in interfaces costing much more, the same chip currently used by RME, the more expensive MOTU 8 channel units and more.

The clock jitter is quite good here, a benefit of the ESS chip, and the fidelity of the recordings are beautiful on an honest set of monitors; the playback is quite good (excellent with a well engineered and produced record!), and with good stage imaging.

I will add that there seems to be a slight midrange bump to adjust to here so take note. This took maybe a day and a half of listening to sort things, but I’ve adjusted easily enough. Worth hanging in there IMO.

The payoff (fidelity and detail) is definitely there. In fact, although it was not my reason for buying the M4, listening back to various tracks in a large music library has been a good experience. Almost as if I am hearing things for the first time.

It doesn’t come with a USBC to USBC cable so I had to pick one up (my PC has USBC), but in fairness the cable they do supply is USBC to USBB and the unit is rated at USBB transfer rates. Overall I think this is a great bargain on so many levels.

I am a local producer. I have gone through many audio interfaces from the low end that Behringer produces to the lower end MOTU M4. In the midrange, I have used UAD and others. I wanted something with lower latency (I use a LOT of Vst’s) and great audio quality.

I tried the Apollo Symphony Desktop, but had a great deal of issues with it. The sound was great when it worked, but those times were few. I came across the Antelope Audio line. I initially purchased the Antelope Audio Zen Go and loved it.

I wanted more inputs and even lower latency so I purchased the Antelope Audio Zen Q, a Thunderbolt, bus powered unit. This was exactly what I was looking for. The sound was pristine, it has onboard effect and the latency was incredible.

As an added bonus, I have had to reach out to support a couple of times and they were fast and knowledgeable. One of my issues actually had nothing to do with the Zen Q itself, but a piece of software I was using that twas causing issues.

The technician got back to me with information on how to modify the software I was using. In the end, the Zen Q was working flawlessly and so was the software. This was terrific! The bundle I purchased came with a Solo modeling mic (which sounds great) and also the BitWig studio full version.

I am a Steinberg Cubase user, but there are some very nice features in the Bitwig that I use. All in all, I am very happy with my purchase and would both recommend the uint as well as purchase it again if needed.

Overall: I recently purchased the Antelope Audio Zen tour Synergy Pro from zZounds and am extremely pleased with the sonic quality after using it for 3 days so far. The included plugins in addition to the promotional bundle provide me with all the tools I need to track and mix with a signal quality on par with top studios.

Adding the Zen Pro Synergy Core has resolved my audio io (quality) issues for the majority of my setups in my home studio – used for songwriting, production, sound design and video/cinematic editorial.

I have only done mic (dynamic and condenser) and instrument tests with electric guitar so far but am inspired. I’ve been using NI, Arturia, Izotope plug ins for years and feel a difference already just using Antelope’s Darkface Amplifier, Green 2×12 Cab simulator with only the cali 121 mic and some rear mic, BAE1073MP mic pre, VEQ-4K Orange eq, – it really is the studio/console workflow and I tend to visualize it like being in the studio with the gear.

I don’t get that same mental image routing in my DAW. The difference I’m feeling is that I have much more processing headroom, I don’t have to back off when my computer processors cannot handle anymore computational load (The NI, Arturia, and Izotope plug ins are fantastic – I’ll just be using them in tandem after the antelope chain – and probably less of their eq, comps etc.

) But that also opens the computer up for the software synths etc. The Antelope signal chain adds up sonically like the real world hardware. So you do have to take care and use common sense managing the signal.

The sonic grit is tangible if you want it to be. You can feel the personality of each effect and for most of the eq’s, mic pres and compressors, understand their parameters – gamut/ranges quickly and intuitively.

I feel like I’m going to like working with this toolset and will also be able to experiment a lot. The Zen Tour Synergy Core is packed with 2 fpga and 4 dsp chips and they in turn generate much heat.

The unit is well designed mechanically and vents well but you’ll want to provide room for air to flow so give it space. It is a small box, but using 1/4 inch TRS, xlr and db25 connectors will require additional clear space in front and behind the unit as well.

So draw some maps before you determine where you’ll be placing it. Also, the unit does not ship with a Thunderbolt 3 cable – A usb 3 cable is provided. Be aware that thunderbolt 3 cable length has the potential to reduce the effective bandwidth of the thunderbolt connection, but the reduction is from TB 3 – (40 Gbps) to TB 2 – (20 Gbps).

i’m using a 1 meter cable and all is well. I haven’t found any Antelope documentation on this factor yet, so it would be a good thing to ask on the forums. The Zen Tour Synergy Core is a portable unit, but I’ll not be dropping it into my backpack without proper padding.

I’m considering a pelican case for it if it is to go on the road. It would be cool if there were a Porta Brace case for it. In short, I’m inspired. Inspired to track, which makes me inspired to write, which makes me inspired to mix, but not on the same day.

Yamaha produce some great products at a favourable price point and the THR 5 is no exception to this. A portable and aesthetically pleasing solution for practicing or recording in a small room environment.

An array of useable tones and effects are possible with the added ability to plug in your external audio device enabling you to play along to your favourite tracks and have some fun along the way! A USB provides connection to an external recording set up you may have or are considering in the future.

Nothing is perfect in this world of ours, so if I’m being super critical I feel this would benefit from longer battery life and a volume and tone control on the aux in. Sound and tone are subjective and everybody has there own ideas on this.

I personally think this is hard to be beat for the positive reasons that I have mentioned. I originally purchased one when they first appeared and sold it on in my search for perfection. Here I am approximately ten years later buying exactly the same item again.

The pros far outweigh the cons for me.

Ok, I am a noob. So I had to watch a lot of videos to figure out how to work this thing. But I couldn’t be happier. The MG12XU does everything I need, and a lot of things I didn’t even know I about. The MG12XU is the lowest level Yamaha to have faders and on/off buttons for each input.

The beauty of glancing at the mixer and seeing not only which inputs are active, but what level each one is at – sold me on this model. Having different color knobs also helps a lot, but it still took me a while to figure out which ones I needed to too twiddle to get the sound I was looking for.

I like the PFL buttons, so I can hear and modify one or more inputs in my headphones. I love that it comes with a USB input so I can use my MacBook or iPad to play recorded music, or to record what’s coming out of the mixer.

Three issues with that, though: 1) it doesn’t come with a cable. Fortunately, my printer has one that I don’t need any more because I print wirelessly. 2) Why is it USB-B? I’d have much preferred USB-C, so it could plug into my devices without dongles.

3) the output from the mixer is a single stereo channel, not 12 individual channels. I realize that’s difficult if not impossible to accomplish, but it would have been nice. My other gripe is the Cubabsis software.

It hung up trying to connect and validate. Now t crashed on startup every time. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled, but my ability to use Cubasis is, well. stalled. In the end, though, I love this mixer.

It works for recording. It works for practicing. I works for the small gigs we do. It is powerful, versatile, and it can do everything I need it to do. The effects are great, and it is a joy to use. I definitely recommend the Yamaha MG12XU.

One tip: Look for a package deal from Sam Ash. I got the mixer, a mic stand, two mics, two cables and a set of headphones for ten dollars less that the mixer alone. You have to work a little to find that deal, though.

It took me years trying to square the circle of the new age of NATVIE systems. With my purchase of the Octo, I was not only able to shed most of the worst sounding plugins from the competition (still love the LinMB which UAD doesnt even come close to with their Precisiom Multiband Comp [it just sounds whack]).

This lets my computer and HD system keep all of its voices/tracks runs my 96kHz fine and the Octo does the heavy heavy number crunching, which great chambers, excellent Manley and LA2A type comps as well as the unbelievable MDWEQ.

Totally lets me load up my plate and keep the CPU nice and chilled. Only two things would be: 1. When chaining some high maintenance plugins together it sometimes overshoots of what pro tools delay compensation is capable of compensating, so Ive been freezing some of all instances of the plugins on that channel to make sure the track plays in time.

2. You wont be able to track through the plugins [it seems to be built into their Apollo architecture] or input monitor (didnt seem to be a thing when I gave it 2 minutes – I could be wrong about the input monitoring).

Any Im not mega fussed because I love outboard and its gotta be said – Im a fan of their blue tripe HOWEVER – my Urei REV D and Hairball Bluestripe do sound better when it comesto handling lowend. INTERESTINGLY the UAD Bluestripe sounds pretty much like the STAM AUDIO REV A.

But I can get down with their 1176 and they do have the chewyness on drums (but the hardware was just much more confident when handling bass). Anyway. Im happy Im able to free up my Mac Pro and Mac Book Pro CPU and have consistency across the platforms as well having a lot of resources to run a lot of verbs and high intensity plugins, because the Octo has got me covered.

I was caught between getting the S3 and the S4, but I’m glad I made the right choice as the effects and LCD screen really made a difference for me when Deejaying knowing the timing at a quick glance.

The haptic feedback was especially helpful when finding points in tracks quickly without having to put my headphones on to search for it all the time. I’ve been using it now for 3 weeks solid now without disappointment.

The variety of inputs/outputs and scope of additional features when mixing was essential for me when pared with other equipment without needing any other adaptors/connectors or devices. The sound card is powerful yet clear in clarity that can deliver, yet adapt to mix changes and effects without compromising the sound quality.

It’s actually taken quite afew sets out my usual mixing style which im now able to spend more time searching for the next song whilst having that extra bit of time to enjoy mixing once again without feeling rushed.

Other than my laptop, this is the heart of my operation and I’m glad it beats strong A very capable yet compact box of tricks that any Deejay can appreciate and utilise. Great addition to my set up as well as looks and feels great to use too.

Definitely protect this baby with the associating flight case too. Well worth the money and tones of additional room to cram in other essentials in too. Big thanks to PMT (Nottingham) team for a warm welcoming vibe as its my first and definitely not the last purchase from them.

The Kontrol S4 is great. Gives me everything I need to mix in the way I like to. Prior to this I used CDJs, Xone92 and X1 controller for loops, cues, FX etc. The S4 wraps up all the features I used from that setup into a much neater package.

Very well built and feels high quality. Screens could be bigger though to cut down on laptop reliance. The best aspect of my purchase was PMT themselves. My first S4 arrived with damage to the box and unit.

I got in touch with customer service and they arranged a replacement, no questions asked, allowing me to drop the old unit into store and arranging a replacement around my working times. The people in store said it was likely a courier issue, however I found a box cutter (yes, a knife) within my package, so clearly someone at the PMT warehouse wasn’t paying attention, leading me to believe it was PMT not courier.

Either way, everything sorted now and I have a spotless S4 and free box cutter.

For years I searched for a decent mixing controller that lets you do volume rides on multiple tracks simultaneously. I’ve owned or looked at literally everything; from iPad apps to analog mixers, finally settling on the Faderport 16.

The “16” part is important, because the 8 channels offered on other controllers will fill up faster than you’d expect. After using this for a while it has completely changed my workflow. Things that were a major headache before, like recording automation on 3 tracks while also balancing some aux groups, are amazingly simple now.

I set this up in Reaper via MCU (there is also apparently a CSI script that offers tighter integration), and it works well for all the main functions, with the exception of a few utility keys (which I don’t use anyway).

The faders are very nice and responsive, the only issue being that they have a small 50ms or so sensor lag, so very fast jumps might not register. For normal mixing/automation work though, this isn’t an issue.

I do not use this for controlling plugins, so cannot comment on that. But If you are the kind of person who has one hand permanently resting on a fader while you’re working, I can’t recommend this enough.

Just wish the design was a little more minimal and less swooshy.

Pros: Hands-on fader control, ergonomic layout of transport is excellent. It sped up my workflow considerably, and I’m only in the composition stage. When i start mixing it will be even better. I am also using it in conjunction with my Push 2, excellent pairing, really.

Cons: Although the integration with Ableton is pretty good, it could be even better. Would like to see a magnetic ‘template’ overlay, such as Arturia provides for their controllers, that matches the different DAWs.

Ha! I really did not expect this unit to be this good. Im a Yamaha man, been so for years. I picked this up primarily because of the price. holy $#!%, I did not expect it to sound this good! Somewhere I read someone mention weak sounding organs, not the case at all.

One thing that had to be done from the start, VELOCITY SENSITIVITY has to be adjusted immediately. That and slippery keys are my only gripe. Oh wait, also the Sfx per tone. come on Roland, people want to set their own custom effects paths.

the DM12 is great for that. So, Ive got this unit running through midi to a Yamaha FM expander, and a DM12 with a master JDXi for doubling up the drums. Oh the drums are magnificent! Better that my $800 drum set, way better sounding.

This unit is insanely light weight. Not sure what else to say, Im kinda bouncing around here. Cool feature, I can run a quick sequence (drums) through midi from the jdxi and record it into the sequencer on the FA.

Same with the other 3 midi channels. This is cool because Ive got a bunch of songs Ive made on the Jdxi that can be tweaked on a far more powerful Daw style system. Oh yea, the sequencer is simple and intuitive.

If youre used to a daw with a mouse you can do this its just more button chicks than mouse drags. Overall, way morebad ass of a studio synth/work station than I expected. Oh, and I do industrial with it, the car crash tone is fanpunch you in the facetactic! Great for industrial 90s sound.

I’ve been a fan of focusrite products for years now and just recently upgraded to the 3rd generation package. The mic is solid and very clear especially for someone just beginning to record music. The interface is powerful and small enough to move around too.

It’s a great setup especially if you’re mobile with your setup. It’s easy to set up, you just plug it in and go. I cant say much about the headphones since I haven’t acquired them yet but it’s a really solid setup.

The microphone and the interface are ideal for my songwriting and my composing. I have recorded a few demos with them, that I’m already so excited to master. These are the best headphones I’ve ever heard.

The quality of sound is ideal for the stereo output into other speakers and audio sources. This helps me clean and polish tracks! Also, very useful DAW bundle. I love that I can try out Ableton without having to buy the standard ver.

This is a great little starter kit. I’m doing some audiobook recording and my old mic and set up was not up to the task. While I don’t have a lot of money to spend on high-end equipment right now, the Focusrite Scarlett Solo Studio has everything I currently need.

It is a simple USB plug in unit with some wonderful features which help reduce sibilance (the Air button). I have noticed that I have to do very little post-production on the sound so I am very pleased with that.

There is also a second socket for a guitar or other instrument (which I don’t need), but I reckon it would work well for a travelling musician. The condenser mic is very good and, provided you use it correctly (just speak into the logo, I find), you get a minimum off room noise, which is amazing as my laptop fans can get quite noisy! Definitely recommend this as a great starter.

How many powerful amp heads have you ever seem with a built in small speaker for home practice use? This is the best combination of powerful performance amp head and practice home amp that I’ve ever found.

When used as a traditional amp head, it’s 100 watts with tons of output jacks for external speaker cabinets, effects loops, Stereo in/out jacks, midi jack, foot switch jack, expression pedal jack, usb out, etc.

It also has a power switch to go between 100 watts, 50 watts, 0. 5 watts, or standby mode. When used at home with the internal speaker, it has a great quality speaker built in, and automatically lowers the output to 30 watts max.

More than loud enough to annoy your neighbors, or keep the volume low for personal practice enjoyment. And if you really need it quiet, you can even go down to a half a watt. Additionally, it has a upper simple control panel, buttons of options such as 10 different amp styles (acoustic, clean, crunch, lead, and brown and a variation option for each), 3 different cabinet emulations (vintage, modern, deep), and controls for presence, gain, volume, master, EQ, and three pedal variation options for each of the Boost, modulation, FX, delay, and reverb knobs, and 8 quick preset profile buttons.

And if that’s not enough options for you, you can also plug it in to a computer and customize all of the pedal settings for a seemingly limitless amount of options. That is insane value for only $350.

Oh, and it sounds fantastic as well! Honestly, the only thing I can think of that it doesn’t have is Bluetooth built in so you can use it with the Tone Studio app wirelessly, with an iphone/iPad, rather than having to plug into a computer with a cable.

Short of that one drawback, it’s nearly perfect.
